Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's cabinet on Wednesday (Sep 18) approved the proposal for a 'One Nation One Election', in a step towards holding simultaneous polls for Lok Sabha and state assemblies.

'One Nation, One Election' was one of the key promises made by PM Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in its manifesto for the Lok Sabha elections which were held earlier this year.

The approval was granted after a report prepared by a high-level panel headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind was presented in front of the cabinet.

The panel in March this year recommended simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies as the first step, followed by synchronised local body polls within 100 days.

The Ram Nath Kovind-led committee has not specified any period for rolling out simultaneous polls.

It has proposed the creation of an 'Implementation Group' to look into the execution of the panel's recommendations.

Previous instance

Elections (to the House of the People and Legislative Assemblies of States) were mostly held simultaneously from 1951-52 to 1967, after which this cycle was broken.

Currently, elections are held almost every year and within a year too at different times which keeps the politicians more focused on winning elections, instead of working for the welfare of the public.

The panel is of the view that holding simultaneous polls will help save resources, spur development and social cohesion. It will also deepen the "foundations of the democratic rubric" and help realise the aspirations of "India that is Bharat".

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's cabinet on Wednesday (Sep 18) approved the proposal for a 'One Nation One Election', in a step towards holding simultaneous polls for Lok Sabha and state assemblies.

Previous instance Elections (to the House of the People and Legislative Assemblies of States) were mostly held simultaneously from 1951-52 to 1967, after which this cycle was broken. Watch | 'One Nation, One Election' Explained; What is it and How it will work × BJP batting for ONOE The approval comes a day after Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, addressing a press conference to mark the 100 days of the third term of PM Modi said ONOE will be implemented within the current tenure. "We plan to implement 'One Nation, One Election' in the present tenure of this government." Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday (Sep 15) announced that he will resign as the Delhi Chief Minister in two days. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo was released from jail on Friday (Sep 13) and was addressing the party workers when he made the shock announcement. "Two days later, I will resign as Chief Minister. I will not sit on that chair till the people announce their verdict. Elections in Delhi are months away. I got justice from the legal court, now I will get justice from the people's court. I will sit on the chief minister's chair only after the order of the people," Kejriwal said. The AAP supremo said a member of the party will be named the CM after his resignation. He added that the party would go to the people and seek their support whilst demanding that elections in the national capital, scheduled for February 2025, be held in November along with the assembly election in Maharashtra. "The elections are supposed to be held in February. I demand elections be held in November with Maharashtra elections," he said. @ArvindKejriwal #केजरीवाल_ईमानदार_है pic.twitter.com/i59f5U9gVV — AAP (@AamAadmiParty) September 15, 2024 × Talking about why he didn't resign as the CM while being in jail, Kejriwal said he wanted to protect the democracy in the country. "I didn't resign because I wanted to protect the country's democracy. They have made a new formula -- wherever they lose, they send the CM to jail and form their government," said Kejriwal. "They have registered cases against (Karnataka CM) Siddaramaiah, (Kerala CM) Pinarayi Vijayan, (West Bengal CM) Mamata didi (Banerjee). I want to appeal to non-BJP, do not resign if they register cases against you. This is their new game," he said.
The poll found that eight per cent of voters were "somewhat" or "much more likely" to be convinced to vote for Harris after Swift's nod. However, 20 per cent of respondents said they were "somewhat" or "much less likely" to vote for Harris.

Immediately after the first presidential debate between Donald Trump and Harris concluded on Tuesday (Sep 10), Swift released a statement on her social media accounts, pledging her allegiance to the Democrat leader.

“Like many of you, I watched the debate tonight,” Swift wrote on Instagram to her 283 million followers.

“I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election. I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached the residence of Chief Justice of India, Justice DY Chandrachud on Wednesday (Sep 11) to partake in the Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations. Images and videos of PM Modi being greeted by the CJI and his wife and later conducting the 'pooja' (worship) have gone viral on social media. However, not everyone is seemingly impressed by the optics of the meet. Clad in his usual attire with a traditional Maharashtrian cap, PM Modi offered prayers to Lord Ganesha who is celebrated with fervour across the country during the 10-day festival. "Joined Ganesh Puja at the residence of CJI, Justice DY Chandrachud Ji. May Bhagwan Shri Ganesh bless us all with happiness, prosperity and wonderful health," PM Modi posted on X (formerly Twitter). As soon as the clips of PM Modi and the CJI together went viral, Opposition leaders as well as former judiciary members came out with their criticism. "Chief Justice of India has compromised the separation of powers between the Executive and Judiciary. Lost all confidence in the independence of the CJI. The SCBA must condemn this publicly displayed compromise of the Independence of the CJI from the Executive," wrote Jaising.
