Artificial intelligence (AI) has been the hot keyword in recent months.

Since its inception in the form of ChatGPT and various other Chatbot AI, the global race, which has just begun, is soon expected to get crowded.

Now, South Korea aims to take the baton of manufacturing chips for the booming AI industry.

Currently, the market is dominated by the US-based chip designer Nvidia, with a weighted share of about 86 per cent in the power supply for a few of the world's biggest cloud services.

Rebellion.AI's recent launch, called the atom chip, is fast emerging as a strong competitor as the firm aims for the tag of being the largest AI-supporting chip manufacturer.

What makes this competition so intense?

The growth in the number of users of AI technology is unprecedented.

The users of ChatGPT rose to around 100 million in just 2 months after its launch, setting a new record for the fastest user growth.

Even Google rushed to tap into this market through its very own chatbot called "Bard", hinting at an AI boom.

Airbus kicks off 2023 on a poor note; deliveries drop 33 per cent in January

The largest airline manufacturer Airbus finds itself in a tough situation after underwhelming delivery figures for its airplanes.

The company, which produced around 661 planes in 2022, was safely riding the 1.6 per cent rise in its shares.

Watch | Low output by Airbus causes concerns

But now, with just 20 deliveries in January, marking a significant drop of 33 per cent, the numbers have their telltale of a scary "wake-up call" for Airbus' executives.

The Chief Executive of the company Guillaume Faury riled up in anger looking at the abysmal output.

In his brief, he clarifies that "this does not happen twice".

But what has led to the situation, and what caused the slowdown?

The distortion to the global supply chain has affected many industries, including the airline manufacturing industry.

Airbus has strongly remained dependent on Russia's titanium resources, with the war on the edge of Europe disrupting supply chains.

Even the steel capacity has come under threat as restructuring remains underway in handling debt.

Amidst recession fears and rising costs, the trade and movement of raw materials remain a problem, along with several other structural and operation-related issues.

Apart from the supply chain-related delays, the Qatar-Airbus dispute remains in play, impeding Airbus' day-to-day operations.

The company's internal functioning has also come into question, with Faury directing his interest towards decarbonisation and modernising the industrial fabric at Airbus.

The focus remains on not dumping the blame on the supply chain but revamping the process by fixing the company's internal issues.

There needs to be higher employee engagement, as suggested by internal sources of the company.

The challenge is to fix external and internal affairs to streamline production.

The multifaceted layers of these issues have caused a pushback in producing new jets.

With a staggeringly low input, industry experts speculate a lower threshold of about 700 jets for the year, while some remain ambitiously confident about an output of nearly 750 planes.

As the production and tests of electronic chips stabilise, hopes remain high for manufacturing to return to normal in the company.

Still, the challenges make it clear the tasks will take a lot of work to manage.

Mauritius Minister Mahen Kumar Seeruttun has expressed his gratitude to India for its support on the issue of the Chagos Islands and reassured the American base on Diego Garcia. The Chagos archipelago, located in the Indian Ocean, is currently under British administration, despite calls from international courts for London to relinquish control. The Diego Garcia island, part of the archipelago, is home to an American military base.

In an interview with WION, Seeruttun, the Minister of Financial Services and Good Governance of Mauritius, stated, "the International Court of Justice has ruled that the occupation by the British is illegal, and they should return to Mauritius. On one of the Islands, Diego Garcia, you have an American military base. We have sought support from all friendly countries that please put pressure on the UK to at least respect that ruling of the international court of justice."

Seeruttun added, "We are a small island, and we don't have military muscle to fight the British and US. India has always been supportive of that, and other countries including China have been supportive in that particular discussion we are having with the UK. It is just cause we want our territory from the UK, we have also told the US that we are not asking them to move out because initially the whole idea of having that base was to ensure that this part of the world remains a peaceful place."

His visit is part of a series of visits expected from Mauritius to India this year, given that the country has been invited to be a guest country during India's G20 Presidency. Highlighting the close relationship between the two countries, he said, "In terms of support, ties with Mauritius are based on historic and diplomatic ties. It's a very special relationship we have. Over the years we have seen, on major development, infrastructure, it has the footprint of India."

He pointed out that, "India has been supportive of Mauritius's development. The latest major project is a new metro project. We got lots of support in implementing the project and it has already got operational. The new supreme court building has been funded by India."

Regarding allegations of black money, the minister said, "We must dispel that kind of allegation that Mauritius has allowed black money. We have a number of legislations, existing one we have amended to reinforce legal provision that our system is robust enough to eliminate risk associated with illicit funds. We are fully compliant with regard to the issue. We keep on reinforcing the system."

About the potential collaboration with GIFT city, Gujarat, the minister said, "we feel we can work together with GIFT city. Based on the experience and relationship we have; we can do a lot together. We are working on an MOU we would like to sign with GIFT city, we can collaborate and do things together and make both countries benefit from that."

Regarding the Adani-Hindenburg case, the minister stated, "What we usually have as a reputable jurisdiction is that we don't ignore those kinds of reports. An estimated 250,000 people protested in support of the ailing public health system, which is suffering shortages of staff and equipment. Protesters thronged the Plaza Cibeles Area in the city centre, where they chanted slogans and waved flags. They alleged that the conservative regional government is destroying this system. Protesters say that the government is dismantling public health services and favouring private health providers. The Madrid government has been criticised by the public health workers since past few years. The criticism rose further during the Covid-19 pandemic over poor staffing in hospitals and primary healthcare centres. However, the government has denied extending any favours to the private health sector.
