In a major breakthrough, scientists revealed the possible reason for the death of a lone giant dinosaur that lived almost 150 million years ago. MOR 7029, popularly known as Dolly, was part of the family of long-necked and plant-eating dinosaurs. Scientists claimed that Dolly used to live during the Late Jurassic period in the region which is now known as southwest Montana. The study suggests that it was a respiratory infection and must have been caused by a fungus which could have led to coughing and breathing issues.

At least 39 people, most of them undocumented US-bound migrants who had just survived a perilous jungle, died in a bus crash in Panama early Wednesday, officials said. Updating the toll from 33, Panama's National Migration Service said the injured were being treated at various hospitals and clinics, without saying how many there were. The latest toll, it added, was based on "preliminary information."

The bus had 66 passengers on board when it crashed with a minibus some 400 kilometres (250 miles) west of the capital Panama City, the press statement said.

The bus was transporting migrants who had crossed the Darien Gap -- an inhospitable jungle area bordering Colombia -- westward toward Costa Rica from where they aimed to continue their journey through Central America and Mexico, and ultimately to the United States.

The bus was on its way to a hostel in Gualaca near the Costa Rica border, where the passengers were to have rested before continuing their journey.

Local media said the crash happened as the driver was turning the bus around after missing the hostel. The nationalities of the occupants and the cause of the accident have not been revealed.

Great sadness

President Laurentino Cortizo tweeted his "great sadness" at learning of the accident at Gualaca. "This is regrettable news for Panama and the region," he said, extending his government's condolences to the next of kin.

"Government teams work hard on the ground, providing medical assistance to survivors of this tragedy," the president added.

The Central American country's health ministry said "more than five children" were among the injured.

Several people were taken by ambulance to a hospital in the Chiriqui provincial capital city David, according to authorities.

Thousands of migrants arriving via Colombia risk their lives every year beating a path through the thick, swampy Darien Gap, a jungle area replete with wild animals, dangerous rivers and criminal gangs.

According to Jose Vicente Pachar, director general of the Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences of Panama, at least 60 migrants died crossing the Darien Gap in 2022, up from 50 in 2021.

The impenetrable topography has meant that plans to build a missing stretch of the Pan-American Highway through the Darien Gap have never been realized.

Number of illegal migrants rising despite risk

Despite the dangers, the number of irregular migrants arriving in Panama en route to the United States nearly doubled in 2022 to a record 248,000, the immigration authority reported on January 1.

More than half were Venezuelan, the rest included Ecuadorians, Haitians and Cubans, as well as people from Africa and Asia.

The government of Panama, in collaboration with United Nations agencies and aid organisations, has set up camps to provide humanitarian assistance to the never-ending migrant arrivals.

In his tweet, Cortizo reiterated his government's "commitment to continue providing humanitarian aid and dignified conditions to face irregular migration."

Panamanian authorities help transfer migrants, hundreds every day, in private buses from the border with Colombia to Paso Canoas on the border with Costa Rica.

It is a journey of some 700 kilometres and about 10 hours for which the migrants buy a ticket.

"It is lamentable this traffic accident, these are people looking for better living conditions," Panama's national director of migration Samira Gozaine told the Telemetro broadcaster as she underlined "the risk" people take on this journey.

At least 39 dead in Panama migrant bus crash

The Yeti Airlines aircraft which crashed in Nepal last month killing 71 people, including five Indians, lost thrust and fell after the propellers of both engines went into a feathered position, according to a preliminary probe report which lead investigators to suspect human error behind the deadly crash.

Yeti Airlines flight 691, after taking off from Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport on January 15, crashed on the Seti River gorge between the old airport and the new airport in the resort city of Pokhara.

There were 72 people including four crew members onboard the ATR-72 aircraft when it crashed, but rescue officials have so far managed to recover only 71 bodies with the other missing passenger presumed dead.

It is rare for the propellers of both engines to come to a feathered position, said one of the members of the five-member probe committee, which is also mentioned in the 14-page preliminary report posted on the website of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Civil Aviation of Nepal.

"Human factor in the accident could not be disregarded. So it is an issue of investigation," said the member on condition of anonymity.

"When both propellers were feathered, the investigation team observed that both engines of 9N-ANC were running flight idle condition during the event flight to prevent over torque," states the preliminary report.

"As per the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) all the recorded parameters related to engines did not show any anomaly," adds the report.

"When Air Traffic Controller (ATC) gave the clearance for landing at 10:57:07, the Pilot Flying (PF) mentioned twice that there was no power coming from the engines," the report further says.

"During the time of the crash, the prevailing visibility was 6 km and the sky was almost clear with only a few clouds," points out the preliminary report.

According to experts, the pilots unintentionally pulled the condition levers causing the engine to shut down and feather the propellers. Each lever starts and stops the fuel supply, and controls the idle speed for its respective engine.

One investigator said that they found the levers pulled down at the crash site.

"We are waiting for a detailed report. We cannot ascertain what happened before that," said a probe committee member.

"Yes, there is also the issue of flaps. There are questions about why the pilots delayed extending the flaps. The routine checklists were not followed. There are many factors to look at," Joint Secretary at the Tourism Ministry Buddhi Sagar Lamichhane - a senior member of the probe committee -- was quoted as saying by The Kathmandu Post newspaper.

As per International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), the state investigating an accident or incident must produce a preliminary report within 30 days of the accident.

The final report should be produced within 12 months of the accident. According to the preliminary report, the flight crew had made two flights between Kathmandu and Pokhara earlier in the morning. The flight that crashed was the third in a row by the same crew.

There were two captains on the plane. Captain Anju Khatiwada was in the process of obtaining aerodrome familiarisation for operating in Pokhara, and Captain Kamal KC was the instructor pilot on this training flight.

The take-off, climb, cruise, and descent to Pokhara were normal.

At 10:56:12, the pilots extended the flaps to the 15 degrees position and pushed the landing gear lever to the down position. Khatiwada then disengaged the autopilot system at an altitude of 721 feet above the ground. Khatiwada then called for 'FLAPS 30', and Captain KC replied, 'Flaps 30 and descending.' The flight data recorder (FDR) did not record any flap surface movement at that time.

Instead, the propeller rotation speed of both engines decreased simultaneously to less than 25 per cent and the torque, the force that causes an opposite rotation, started decreasing to zero per cent, which is consistent with both propellers going into the feathered condition, the report said.

When the propellers are feathered, they don't produce thrust that pushes the aircraft forward. As per the flight data recorder, no recorded parameters related to the engines showed any anomaly.

When the air traffic controller gave the clearance for landing, Captain Khatiwada twice mentioned that there was no power in the engines.

The report said that the aircraft's airworthiness certificate was valid till April 24, 2023.

Nepal's investigators have received analytical support from Singapore's Transport Safety Investigation Bureau.

The airport, built with China's assistance, was hastily inaugurated and operated without adequate preparations to meet the January 1 project deadline. Flight calibration, which tests all pieces of equipment at the new airport, has yet to recommend landing from the west. The calibration report is due to be published on February 26.

The flight procedure has not been published either. Airlines have very little information about airport procedures and data, according to experts. The AAIC has stated that further investigation will focus on the circumstances under which both propellers went into the feathered condition, human factors, and visual approach procedures, including simultaneous operation of both national and international airports, according to media reports.

Malaysian activists on Thursday criticised the government's decision of banning three books for allegedly promoting the "LGBTQ lifestyle," saying that this step would further damage gay and transgender rights. The Malaysian home ministry in its statement released on Tuesday said that "Jacob's Room to Choose," a children's book about gender expression was banned in January. Two other children's books, "The Tale of Steven," and the Malay-language title, "Aku" were also banned, AFP reported.

Justifying its measure, the ministry said that its objective was to "prevent the spread of elements that are harmful to morality in the community."

‘Done,’ says UK's First Lady Akshata Murthy after fisherman asks her to keep all ‘Goans’ safe

Amazon.com is taking more money from the almost 2 million small businesses that sell goods on its online marketplace as it struggles with slowing sales growth and growing costs, according to a Bloomberg report.

The report quoting research by Marketplace Pulse showed Amazon's average margin of each sale topped 50 per cent from its merchants for the first time in 2022. The study used seller transactions that date back to 2016 as a sample.

According to Marketplace Pulse, sellers have been paying Amazon more for each transaction for six years in a row. But they have been able to absorb the rise in Amazon's cut because of new clients and their revenues growing quickly.

Amazon controls how much cut it takes

As the pandemic lockdowns were lifted and people started travelling and dining out again, that dramatically altered, suffocating online commerce.

Last year, Amazon generated the slowest sales growth in its history.

Amazon's primary online retail operation faces a significant challenge in maintaining earnings as sales decline.

Without its lucrative cloud computing division, Amazon Web Services, the company would have experienced an operational loss of $10 billion in 2017.

Amazon commissions and other fees, such as those for packing and delivery, are outside the control of Amazon sellers.

They only have power over advertising, and there are indications that they are restraining themselves.

Amazon's advertising revenue in the holiday quarter grew 18.9 per cent, a still robust expansion but a big slow-down from the same period a year earlier when it increased by 32.2 per cent.

More sellers to hike prices

The Bloomberg report showed for Chuck Gregorich, who sells fire pits and patio furniture, turning a profit on Amazon is becoming more challenging. He charges $200 for one of his well-liked fire pits, of which Amazon keeps $112 for commission, storage in a warehouse, delivery, and advertising.

He now has $88 left over to pay the producer, ship the item from China, and take care of other expenses.

So, Gregorich has had to take on more of the logistics work himself due to the increasing fees.

He said that other carriers could carry fire pits for around $28—roughly half of what he costs Amazon to deliver large products. That is likely to push Gregorich to hike the price of his product offering. But the improvements made by Amazon are advantageous to some merchants.

Indeed, the report showed one of Amazon's lowest delivery options for small, inexpensive items is used by Desert Cactus, a Chicago-based company that sells flags, license-plate frames, and other stuff on behalf of colleges and professional sports teams.

What is botulism? Popular vegan milk brand in Australia recalled after a reported case

After 10 long trauma-filled years, a young woman is suing online chatting app Omegle, where she was randomly paired with a paedophile, who forced her to become a digital sex slave. The woman, who BBC named Alice is now 21 and is in a loving relationship, described that despite moving on in life, the scars of the abuse she suffered still linger.

Alice first experienced Omegle when she was at a slumber party with her friends. Back then, the app was becoming a wild corner of the internet.

After her sleepover, she logged in alone and that's when she was matched with the Canadian paedophile Ryan Fordyce.

Struggling with early teenage anxieties, Alice began talking with Fordyce as he made her feel better. During their first video chat, he persuaded her to share her personal message details.

Alice said that she was only 11, but he wanted her to look as young as she could.

She said he was very particular about the way she looked in the video and forced her to send him images, and used to tell her to wear a ponytail to the left side of her head.

"He was able to manipulate me immediately. Very quickly, I was being forced to do things that a child should not have to do."

The man was able to coerce her to send intimate images and convinced Alice that she was complicit in making and sharing child abuse sexual material.

The fear of arrest kept Alice quiet.

"I spent a huge chunk of my childhood at his beck and call. Every day is at the will of someone else who had the worst of intentions for children."

This continued for three years until Fordyce lost his interest and the communication petered out.

Alice planned to carry this to her grave until one-day Canadian police noticed that someone is sharing child sexual abuse material online. They soon tracked the IP address to Fordyce with a search warrant.

When the police went, Ryan was out, but constable Pam Klassen logged in to his computer and found a horrific collection of child sexual abuse images and videos sent by several children under his orders.

His wife said that there must be a mistake. She was shocked.

The folders were categorised into seven different sections with names and age groups, among which there was Alice, 11-14.

Fordyce was sentenced to eight years in prison in 2021.

With Ryan behind the bars, Alice is going after Omegle to fight a case, and this would be the first tech case where a platform is put on trial for the way it is built.

The legal team for the platform argued in court that the website is not to be blamed for what happened to Alice and other girls, and denied that it is a haven for predators.

The case is still on, Alice's legal team said that she wants Omegle to close down.

After Shraddha Walker murder case, another brutal killing shocks the Indian capital Delhi

India's Supreme Court has agreed to hear a petition from the opposition leader asking for an investigation into Hindenburg's allegations of financial fraud by the Adani group.

The petition is now listed for hearing on February 17 by the top court.

That comes on the heels of the Indian government and the market regulator, the SEBI, agreeing to the top court's suggestion for a committee led by a retired judge to look into the market rout in the Adani group and suggest improvements to the current regulations.

However, the SEBI has informed the supreme court that it is already investigating the Adani group over Hindenburg's allegations.

Can the Adani Group refinance without any trouble?

In a credit report aimed at countering Hindenburg's critical allegations and calming investors, the Adani group said it has enough cash reserves and is fine with refinancing its debt or raising new capital.

In the credit report, the group said the gross debt of Billionaire Gautam Adani-led firms stood at $27.3 billion at the end of September and expected it to remain around that amount by the end of March.

Since the US research firm's probe became public, Adani group stocks have lost more than $120 billion.

Given that the borrowing costs have risen for the Indian empire following that scathing Hindenburg report, scrutiny of the cash condition of group firms has increased.

Picture this, the cost of borrowing for one of the Gautam Adani-led firms jumped as high as 36 per cent and settled around 25 per cent.

That clearly shows how expensive it is for Adani group companies to finance their debt.

Before the Adani group's credit report on Tuesday aimed at reassuring investors, rating agency Moody's Investors Service had expressed doubts regarding Adani's capacity to raise money or refinance its outstanding debt coming due in the years to come.

Adani Group repays its debt to soothe investors' nerves

The Adani group, for its part, has repaid some debt to boost investor confidence.

The founders of Adani and their companies have paid off debts totaling $1.11 billion to free pledged shares and committed to reducing leverage in the upcoming months.

The business empire also intends to prepay a $500 million bridge loan due next month, and the ports unit has revealed intentions to pay back some debt in April.

Indeed, a Reuters report showed India's troubled Adani Group is in talks with lenders to repay a $500 million bridge loan facility it had acquired to purchase a controlling stake from Holcim in cement businesses ACC Ltd and Ambuja Cements Ltd last year.
