Disney to debut its streaming platform called Disney+ in late 2019

<p>Netflix announced nine new original films from India, with eight being made by local filmmakers and the ninth, ‘Hotel Mumbai’, to be a Hollywood film set in India that has been acquired by the streaming service for the SAARC region. This announcement was made by Netflix in Singapore on Friday.&nbsp;<br />

‘15th August’, produced by Madhuri Dixit, is set in a Mumbai chawl, and follows the course of a single day as its residents prepare for the flag-hoisting ceremony. This Marathi film is about the struggles of middle-class India and in a soaring climax, it is about how love sets us free.<br />

‘Music Teacher’, directed by Sarthak Dasgupta, is a story about an emotionally troubled music teacher, essayed by Manav Kaul, who gets a chance to come to terms with his bitterness with an estranged student, now a renowned celebrity singer of Bollywood. The music teacher vows to get back everything he lost in the past risking all his achievements in the present day.<br />

‘Hotel Mumbai’ tells the true story of the victims and survivors of the devastating attacks on Mumbai in 2008. The film directed by Anthony Maras stars Dev Patel, Armie Hammer, Nazanin Boniadi, Anupam Kher, and Jason Isaacs.</p>

Mrunal Thakur who was last seen in critically acclaimed film ‘Love Sonia’ and Rahul Bose have been cast as leads for the prequel series.&nbsp;<br />

Netflix Inc said it would stick with the team behind Indian hit show 'Sacred Games' for a second season after an independent investigation into allegations of sexual harassment against two individuals involved with the show. In a statement emailed to Reuters, Netflix said it would continue to work with the show`s lead writer Varun Grover, one of two men called out in a wave of #MeToo allegations in India in recent weeks. Also read: Sacred Games review It said it would continue to work with directors Vikramaditya Motwane and Anurag Kashyap, whose production house Phantom Films was behind the Mumbai-set thriller and who have not been mentioned in the allegations. Netflix announced a second season of 'Sacred Games' in September but ran into trouble earlier this month when Phantom Films disbanded in a cloud of allegations against one of its partners, Vikas Bahl, and Grover. Both men have denied the allegations. Bahl was not listed as a producer on the first season. Netflix gave no details of the outcome of the investigation. "After an independent investigation, the results helped inform Netflix’s decision to continue with Vikramaditya Motwane and Anurag Kashyap on season 2 of Sacred Games," the company said. "We continue to collaborate with our production partners to ensure and maintain a safe and respectful working environment." Kashyap, who directed the first season, said in a statement this month on his Twitter account that he regretted not acting on allegations of sexual misconduct made against his partner and producer Bahl in 2015. <p>Back in February 2016, Netflix renewed the hit show for three seasons taking it through to season seven. "OITNB" returned for season six on July 27.</p>

<p>Premiere date of final season is yet to be announced.</p>

"There are survival issues. In a freelance industry, there is always a fear, there is a possibility that you will go down. When you are a freelancer you are always looking for a next job. There is always struggle. I am struggling to find out what I am going to do next," Radhika told PTI.<br />

She says there are days when she is bombarded with too many scripts but there are also times when nothing substantial is happening.<br />

"I want to be in this business. I like to perform, I hope I keep on getting good offers. I hope the fame is not going to be short-lived. I hope I keep on finding ways to be working," she says.<br />

The 33-year-old actor may not have signed on any project recently, she is looking forward to two Hindi releases - "Andhadhun" and "Baazaar".&nbsp;<br />

"It is easy to create fear in these names, given the valuations and this Facebook story, that is bleeding over to these other names."</p>

<p>The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 122.73 points, or 0.46 per cent, to 26,773.94, the S&amp;P 500 lost 1.16 points, or 0.04 per cent, to 2,923.43 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 37.76 points, or 0.47 per cent, to 7,999.55.</p>

<p>The NYSE FANG+TM index, an equal-weighted index of five core FANG stocks, was down 4.2 per cent for September.</p>

<p>The smallcap Russell 2000 index was off 1.01 per cent. Smaller names, which had been viewed as being more insulated to trade pressures, are losing their lustre following Sunday's late-night North American trade agreement.</p>

It's okay that the film is not getting a theatrical release. I make films, that is my job. Now, it is up to people if they want to watch it or not- irrespective of the medium."<br />

The director feels that both digital and cinema halls can co-exist. "They will always co-exist. Digital won’t take over. Some films will stay in web format, some for cinema."&nbsp;<br />

Kashyap was in the capital city to launch the Delhi edition of MAMI year-round programme. The programme intends to showcase latest, talked-about- films from across the world to select audience each month. The Mumbai edition is already a hit and now the organisers have planned to take it outside Mumbai. Lauding the initiative to bring world and Indian cinema to Delhi, Kashyap rued that no such festival existed back when he was in Delhi studying at Delhi University.&nbsp;<br />

"We didn’t have anything like this back when I was in college. There used to be only IFFI and there was no awareness about the festivals. I discovered IFFI in '93 and I was in Delhi since 1989. Had I discovered IFFI back then instead of waiting in the canteen for that girl – I could have watched a lot of films," Kashyap admits with a grin.<br />

Calling MAMI an important platform for smaller films and indies, Kashayp said, "It is an important platform for opening up cinema to the world. Which is why it matters."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Apart from 'Lust Stories', Kashyap's upcoming projects include web series 'Sacred Games' which he is co-directing with Vikramaditya Motwane. It marks Saif Ali Khan's debut in web space and co-stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Radhika Apte. The series will be on Netflix in July. "We didn’t have anything like this back when I was in college. There used to be only IFFI and there was no awareness about the festivals. I discovered IFFI in '93 and I was in Delhi since 1989. Had I discovered IFFI back then instead of waiting in the canteen for that girl – I could have watched a lot of films," Kashyap admits with a grin. Calling MAMI an important platform for smaller films and indies, Kashayp said, "It is an important platform for opening up cinema to the world. Which is why it matters." Apart from 'Lust Stories', Kashyap's upcoming projects include web series 'Sacred Games' which he is co-directing with Vikramaditya Motwane. Some of the best-known film directors of Bollywood- Karan Johar, Dibakar Banerji, Zoya Akhtar and Anurag Kashyap-have come together to make an anthology film called Lust Stories. The film's trailer was shared by Johar on Twitter on Friday. The film will be streamed exclusively on Netflix. A sequel of sorts to 2013 anthology film Bombay Talkies, which the four directors were a part of, Lust Stories talks of love and desire but from the women's point of view. <p>Popular for&nbsp;series like, "House of Cards", "13 Reasons why", "Narcos", "Better call Soul", Netflix is planning to focus&nbsp;on original content this year as the video streaming giant has planned to produce over 500 original productions by the end of this year.</p>

<p>According to media reports, about 700 original content including movies and tv series will be produced this year with an investment of at least $8 billion.</p>

<p>The planned productions of this year will also include a lot of non-English content such as psychological thriller "Dark" from Germany and "Club de Cuervos" from Mexico. Ideas for 80 movies are also in the pipeline.</p>

<p>Media reports also quoted Ted Sarandos, the chief content officer for Netflix saying that Netflix spends 85% per cent of its spending on original content only. He was speaking at the "MoffettNathanson Media & Communications Summit 2018" in New York on Monday.</p>

<p>Netflix is also intending to focus further on original content more than adding content as original content will ensure secure a fanbase for the company a lot of other networks are also planning to launch their own streaming service.</p>

<p>Currently, in order to add content to Netflix, the company signs an agreement with the production company which eventually has an expiry date.</p>

<p>Disney is also planning to launch its own streaming service by 2019 which could shift the Disney fan base from Netflix to Disney's app.</p>

<p>Currently, the service has some 470 originals right now.</p>

<p>In their latest additions for May month, Netflix will add movies like "Amelie", "Hachi: A Dog's Tale", "Queens of Comedy: Season 1", "High School Musical 3" etc.</p>

<p>In original additions, "A Little Help with Carol Burnett", "Manhunt", "Busted", "Dear White People" are among other shows that viewers can stream.</p>

<p>Recently released Disney-Pixar movie Coco will also be added to Netflix this month.</p>

<p>Their popular thriller series "Stranger Things" has also been renewed for the third season this month and their "13 Reasons why"&nbsp;second season will&nbsp;premiere on May 18.</p>
