Once a bastion of peace in Latin America, Ecuador has been plunged into crisis after years of unchecked, mushrooming influence of transnational Narco-gangs, who use its ports to ship cocaine to the United States and Europe. It suffered a recent surge in violence, triggered by the 7th January prison escape of one of the country's most powerful Narco bosses, Jose Adolfo Macias, better known by the alias "Fito".

Mexican-American actor Adnan Canto, best known for his work in series like Narcos and Designated Survivor, passed away on January 8 after a private struggle with appendiceal cancer. Born in Ciudad Acuna, Coahuila, Mexico in 1981 and raised in Texas, Canto started his career in music at the age of 16 and eventually became an actor.&nbsp; 
 
As an actor, he initially featured in several local commercials and TV shows in Mexico before starring in The Following. He had featured in notable series such as Designated Survivor, where he worked alongside Kiefer Sutherland for three seasons. His career also included roles in Mixology and Blood &amp; Oil. 
 
In the last two years, Canto took on the role of gangster Arman Morales on The Cleaning Lady. His debut US acting role was in Fox's The Following, and The Cleaning Lady, his final project, was also produced by Warner Bros. TV. Canto also played the part of Minister Lara in Netflix's Narcos. 
 
Adan Canto took on the lead role for the first two seasons of The Cleaning Lady but had to take a backseat in the third season owing to his health. Following his death, the series intends to honour its late star with a tribute card in the Season 3 premiere.

International Academy president and CEO Bruce Paisner recently announced this year's nominees for the International Emmy Awards. Talking about the diversity and quality of the nominees, Paisner said that great television knows no borders and is emerging around the globe.

"We look forward to recognising these outstanding programs and performances on our global stage with the International Emmy," Paisner added.

This year, we have 23 countries representing 15 categories and 60 nominees. Netflix's 'Narcos: Mexico' picked up two nominations, third season of another Netflix hit&nbsp;'Sex Education' is nominated for Best Comedy Series alongside HBO Latin America's 'Bunker',&nbsp;Canal+'s 'On The Verge', and BBC's 'Dreaming Whilst Black'. International Emmy 2022 nominations: 'Sex Education', 'Narcos: Mexico' and more

Brazilian actor Wagner Moura who is best known for playing the notorious drug lord Pablo Escobar in Netflix show ‘Narcos’ is now headed to India to attend the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in November.&nbsp;

IFFI will screen close to 250 films from various countries and will run through November 20-28. This will be the 50th edition of the festival.&nbsp;

Wagner will be a part of the festival as he visits India for the first time to bring his directorial debut film ‘Marighella’ under debut competition category.&nbsp;

'Narcos' star Warner Moura to attend International Film Festival of India in Goa

Director Patty Jenkins has hinted that the third part of Gal Gadot-fronted 'Wonder Woman' series will be set in the present era.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the 47-year-old director, who is currently working on 'Wonder Woman 1984', said she has an inkling of where the story could go after the sequel.

After the debacle of DC's 2017 superhero ensemble 'Justice League', fans have been petitioning the director to helm the next instalment, but Jenkins said it is an 'extremely challenging' task.

"The 'Justice League' movie, I find those movies to be extremely challenging. I think they are fantastic when they are well done," she said.

She believes before going forward with the next 'Justice League' film, the studio should focus on the individual stories of all the superheroes.

"Taking on all of those characters at the same time in the timeline... I sort of hope that we don't do a Justice League movie for a little while because I'm excited to see all of their movies. I want to see 'Aquaman 2', I want to see 'Flash'," the director said.

"Never say never, but I think everyone should have their moment to shine," she added.

'Wonder Woman 1984' will see Gadot's Wonder Woman face off against Kristen Wiig's Cheetah.

Accused Mexican drug lord Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman was interested in directing a movie about his life story as early as 2007, long before his well-known meeting with US actor Sean Penn and Mexican actress Kate Del Castillo in 2015, jurors in Guzman's US trial heard on Monday.

Alex Cifuentes, Guzman's self-described one-time 'right-hand man,' said he learned about a planned movie project while living with Guzman in the mountains of his boss` home state of Sinaloa from 2007 to 2009.

Colombian-born Cifuentes is one of about a dozen witnesses who have so far testified against Guzman after striking deals with U.S. prosecutors, in a trial that has provided a window into the secretive world of the Sinaloa Cartel, one of the world's most powerful drug trafficking organization.

On trial in federal court in Brooklyn since November, Guzman, 61, was extradited to the United States in 2017 to face charges of trafficking cocaine, heroin and other drugs into the country as leader of the cartel.&nbsp;

The alleged kingpin's silver screen dreams first surfaced after Penn wrote a story for Rolling Stone magazine in 2016 about travelling with Del Castillo to meet Guzman at a forest hideout, not long after Guzman had escaped from a Mexican prison through a tunnel.

Del Castillo, who once played a drug trafficker in a well-known Mexican TV soap, revealed soon after the article was published that the meeting came about because Guzman's lawyers had reached out to her about a possible movie.

When Guzman was eventually recaptured in 2016, Mexico's then-Attorney General Arely Gomez said his contact with 'actresses and producers' was an 'important aspect that helped locate him.'

Cifuentes own wife first urged Guzman to make a biopic around 2007, Cifuentes said on Monday. Cifuentes said Guzman hired a Colombian producer and planned a book tie-in, and the project got as far as a draft that was shown to his lawyers.

In his testimony, Cifuentes also offered jurors a glimpse of Guzman's life as a fugitive in the mountains. On a typical day, Cifuentes said, Guzman got up at noon, received messages from his personal secretary and then made calls while strolling under the trees.

Cifuentes said that Guzman ordered him to kill the cartel's communications expert, Christian Rodriguez, after learning that he was cooperating with the FBI.&nbsp;

Cifuentes said he was unable to track down Rodriguez, who now lives in the United States and testified at the trial last week because he did not know his last name.&nbsp;

The story in first two seasons follows the story of drug kingpin Pablo Escobar,&nbsp;who became a billionaire through the production and distribution of cocaine, while also showing the struggle between Escobar and his various opposition entities. The second season, however, ended with the death of Pablo Escobar, leaving fans in a disarray.&nbsp;

The third season picks up the story from there and according to reviews is far better than its previous one.&nbsp;

Netflix &mdash; whose competitors include Amazon.com Inc`s streaming service and Hulu, besides cable channels such as HBO &mdash; plans to release over 1,000 hours of original programming this year, up from 600 hours last year.

The Los Gatos, California-based company said its revenue rose 35.9 per cent to $2.48 billion in the December quarter. Analysts on average had expected $2.47 billion, according to Thomson Reuters.

The company said it expects to add 1.50 million subscribers in the United States in the current quarter, below the FactSet estimate of 1.79 million.

In international markets, Netflix said it expects to add 3.70 million subscribers, above the average estimate of 3.05 million. Up to Wednesday`s close of $133.26, Netflix`s stock had risen 33.5 per cent since it reported third quarter results in October.

Netflix exceeds international subscriber estimates

Becoming the mayor of your city, the place where you grew up, is an honour. It is a victory, often coming after a fierce political battle. You finally have the chance to do your best to improve the daily lives of your fellow citizens.&nbsp; 
 
It is not an easy path though, it requires a lot of effort. Not everybody will be happy with your actions, and many will stand on your way ready to stop you every time they can. 
 
When Ambrosio Soto won the elections in the small Mexican town of Pungarabato, he knew all this. And he also knew that for him, as for many other mayors in the country, things were going to be more complicated. 
 
Being a good mayor in Mexico can get you killed in cold blood at any time. It is what happens to the ones who do not want to surrender their territory to the local powerful and brutal criminal organisations, the so-called drug cartels. There is no possible middle ground: if you are not for them, you are against them.&nbsp; 
 
Against them was where Ambrosio Soto decided to be. During his office, he firmly refused to give a share of the municipality public funding to the cartels. A choice he payed for with his life. On the night of July 23, a masked commando showered his car with bullets, killing him and his driver. 
 
He knew this could have happened. Indeed, he wrote it on Twitter two weeks before his assassination.

These two killings are only the last on a long list. Eighty three mayors and ex-mayors have been assassinated in Mexico since 2006. 
 
Mexico is, unfortunately, also this. A country where extremely wealthy, armed and influential criminal groups have built an unscrupulous parallel state where being a local politician is a dangerous job, even after retirment. &nbsp;

Their rule is one of fear and money. 
 
Assassinations and bribes are their control levers. 
 
Their cruelty is notorious around the world: if you make a mistake they do not just simply shoot you. They torture you, chop you into pieces, burn you alive, melt your limbs in acid and deliver what remains to your family.

Such brutality makes corruption very hard to uproot. It takes guts to refuse a bribe knowing what will happen after, and most citizens want to live. Corruption is a pervasive element in the Mexican society, from the streets up to the higest political offices. Many of the law enforcement agencies are also believed to be on the criminal&#39;s payroll.&nbsp; 
 
From a business perspective their location is their unique selling point. Being on the North American border provides access to a wide and wealthy market, where the appetite for drugs is insatiable. On top of that, there is no other land route to the United States than Mexico. Not surprisingly, currently, the most influential cartels are the ones located on border areas.

For these organisations, controlling the territory is fundamental. All Mexican cartels have well organised fire batteries, in all similar to regular army units. They carry last generation weapons of all sorts, from small pistols to anti-tank machine guns. The majority of those weapons, nearly seven out of 10, are legally purchased in the nearly 7,000 gun shops located just across the US border. The smuggling network then takes care of the delivery. 
 
Drug dealing is the cartels&#39; core business, and cocaine is, as always, the majour source of income. Cartels buy it from Colombia, Peru or Bolivia, then manage its sale and distribution in the United States. The price at source for a kilogram of powder is around $2,000, which can be sold to wholesalers for $30,000. The gross profit is 1,400 per cent, way more than any legal business on earth. 
 
Like any other corporation, the cartels diversify their investments.&nbsp; 
 
In the last decade, methamphetamine has proved to be an excellent substitute for cocaine: it is more addictive and cheaper to produce. Meth can be prepared in any chemical laboratory, it does not need a natural precursor. The entire process, beginning to end, takes place in Mexico and there is no need to pay foreign organisations for the raw material. 
 
Marijuana used to be a majour source of income, but things have slightly changed after the decision of several states in the US to depenalise both the recreational or the therapeutic use of cannabis. Recent figures show a decrease in US seizures of Mexican weed. 
 
Nevertheless, the Central American country still has thousands of hectares of well-guarded and hidden ganja plantations. Their harvest, with its intense perfume and typical orange shades, is commonly appreciated in many South American countries.

According to estimates, the whole Mexican drug trade is worth $30 billion a year. More than the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Nepal, at $21 billion, and Afghanistan, at $17 billion. 
 
Some of the top 500 companies of the world have smaller revenues. The Japan-based corporation Suzuki Motors, for instance, makes $26.5 billion a year. The French cosmetic company l&#39;Or?al has a yearly flow of $28 billion. 
 
The Sinaloa cartel, which rules over the Mexican west coast, is currently the most powerful. It controls roughly 50 per cent of the country&#39;s drug trade, and its turnover is higher than the GDP of Zimbabwe, at $14.6 billion, and Jamaica, at $14 billion.&nbsp; 
 
All these figures have to be considered carefully; by the nature of the business it is impossible to have exact data. Criminal organisations do not file tax papers nor regular balance sheets, and their transactions happen mostly in cash. The only way to estimate their assets is on the basis of seizures and investigations, so what we have is most likely a conservative figure.

The Mexican government response has, so far, been mainly military. In 2006 former President Felipe Calder?n declared his intention to destroy the cartels and deployed more than 6,500 soldiers in what has become a constant war. 
 
The military aspect is not the only one of this conflict. The cartel&#39;s solid power has much to do with the perception that part of society has about them. It is a also a cultural battle.&nbsp; 
 
Drug lords, and affiliates in general, are often perceived as examples of success, powerful people who fulfilled all their dreams. They have luxury cars, villas, money and everything one could possibly desire. Many young Mexicans look up to them, want to be them. This appeal is a very powerful tool in the criminals hands. They create and manipulate this mythology expertly. 
 
Cartels keep fuelling an underground narco-culture, ranging from tatoos to songs. Music plays a very important role in this game, there is a vast musical repertoire representing criminals as folk heroes fighting bravely against the police for the good of their land and their people. Hundreds of these songs, the so-called &ldquo;narco corrido&rdquo;, drug ballads, can be heard in the many small tavernas in the North of Mexico.

The control that cartels are able to excercise in many Mexican regions is also a matter of employment. It is believed that the organisations employ some five hundred thousand people, at least. It means that entire families are surviving &ldquo;thanks&rdquo; to the drug money, a fact that works heavily in the criminals favour, building a spirit of gratitude that passes on generation to generation.&nbsp; 
 
Many perceive the cartels as positive organisations, granting them salaries and thus a dignified life.&nbsp;Too many times a short one, though. Most of the people who join the cartels die very young. The cartels are involved in a constant war, both against their rivals and against the state. This spiral of violence has claimed more than 60,000 lives by now, suffocating Mexico&#39;s positive energies and depriving the country of peace. &nbsp;

Corruption is a pervasive element in the Mexican society, from the streets up to the higest political offices. Many of the law enforcement agencies are also believed to be on the criminal's payroll. From a business perspective their location is their unique selling point. Being on the North American border provides access to a wide and wealthy market, where the appetite for drugs is insatiable. On top of that, there is no other land route to the United States than Mexico. Not surprisingly, currently, the most influential cartels are the ones located on border areas. For these organisations, controlling the territory is fundamental. All Mexican cartels have well organised fire batteries, in all similar to regular army units. They carry last generation weapons of all sorts, from small pistols to anti-tank machine guns. The majority of those weapons, nearly seven out of 10, are legally purchased in the nearly 7,000 gun shops located just across the US border. The smuggling network then takes care of the delivery. Drug dealing is the cartels' core business, and cocaine is, as always, the majour source of income. Cartels buy it from Colombia, Peru or Bolivia, then manage its sale and distribution in the United States. The price at source for a kilogram of powder is around $2,000, which can be sold to wholesalers for $30,000. The gross profit is 1,400 per cent, way more than any legal business on earth. Like any other corporation, the cartels diversify their investments. In the last decade, methamphetamine has proved to be an excellent substitute for cocaine: it is more addictive and cheaper to produce. Meth can be prepared in any chemical laboratory, it does not need a natural precursor. The entire process, beginning to end, takes place in Mexico and there is no need to pay foreign organisations for the raw material. Marijuana used to be a majour source of income, but things have slightly changed after the decision of several states in the US to depenalise both the recreational or the therapeutic use of cannabis. Recent figures show a decrease in US seizures of Mexican weed. Nevertheless, the Central American country still has thousands of hectares of well-guarded and hidden ganja plantations. Their harvest, with its intense perfume and typical orange shades, is commonly appreciated in many South American countries. According to estimates, the whole Mexican drug trade is worth $30 billion a year. More than the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Nepal, at $21 billion, and Afghanistan, at $17 billion. Some of the top 500 companies of the world have smaller revenues. The Japan-based corporation Suzuki Motors, for instance, makes $26.5 billion a year. The French cosmetic company l'Or?al has a yearly flow of $28 billion. The Sinaloa cartel, which rules over the Mexican west coast, is currently the most powerful. It controls roughly 50 per cent of the country's drug trade, and its turnover is higher than the GDP of Zimbabwe, at $14.6 billion, and Jamaica, at $14 billion. All these figures have to be considered carefully; by the nature of the business it is impossible to have exact data. Criminal organisations do not file tax papers nor regular balance sheets, and their transactions happen mostly in cash. The only way to estimate their assets is on the basis of seizures and investigations, so what we have is most likely a conservative figure. The Mexican government response has, so far, been mainly military. In 2006 former President Felipe Calder?n declared his intention to destroy the cartels and deployed more than 6,500 soldiers in what has become a constant war. The military aspect is not the only one of this conflict. The cartel's solid power has much to do with the perception that part of society has about them. It is a also a cultural battle. Drug lords, and affiliates in general, are often perceived as examples of success, powerful people who fulfilled all their dreams. They have luxury cars, villas, money and everything one could possibly desire. Many young Mexicans look up to them, want to be them. This appeal is a very powerful tool in the criminals hands. They create and manipulate this mythology expertly. Cartels keep fuelling an underground narco-culture, ranging from tatoos to songs. Music plays a very important role in this game, there is a vast musical repertoire representing criminals as folk heroes fighting bravely against the police for the good of their land and their people. Hundreds of these songs, the so-called “narco corrido”, drug ballads, can be heard in the many small tavernas in the North of Mexico. Here below just a sample. The control that cartels are able to excercise in many Mexican regions is also a matter of employment. It is believed that the organisations employ some five hundred thousand people, at least. It means that entire families are surviving “thanks” to the drug money, a fact that works heavily in the criminals favour, building a spirit of gratitude that passes on generation to generation. Many perceive the cartels as positive organisations, granting them salaries and thus a dignified life. Too many times a short one, though. Most of the people who join the cartels die very young. The cartels are involved in a constant war, both against their rivals and against the state. This spiral of violence has claimed more than 60,000 lives by now, suffocating Mexico's positive energies and depriving the country of peace. (With inputs from Vrinda Aggarwal)

The brother of the late Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar has asked Netflix to review the second season of the hit series Narcos before its release. 
 
Roberto Escobar said in a statement released on Tuesday by Escobar Inc. that he had sent Netflix a &quot;friendly request&quot; to review the material &quot;solely on an informational basis&quot;. 
 
&quot;It is depicting me, my life, my family and my brother,&quot; the statement said. &quot;I think nobody else in the world is alive to determine the validity of the materials, but me.&quot; 
 
Although Netflix has kept details of the second season of Narcos under wraps, it is understood that the shows will be available for the streaming service&#39;s 81 million subscribers in August, with the death of the feared Medellin Cartel&#39;s Don Pablo recreated in the finale. 
 
The Colombian farmer&#39;s son who became world&#39;s seventh-richest man with his ruthless dominance of the global cocaine trade was hunted for years before police killed him in his hometown of Medellin in 1993. 
 
His brother Roberto was the cartel&#39;s chief accountant and served a lengthy spell in prison. He wrote about the group&#39;s exploits in a book entitled The Accountant&#39;s Story: Inside the Violent World of the Medellin Cartel. 
 
During the height of its operations, the cartel brought in more than $60 million a day, providing 80 per cent of the cocaine smuggled into the United States. 
 
Olof Gustafsson, the CEO of Escobar Inc., said he had tried to reach Netflix about the new season but had gotten no response. 
 
&quot;I think it is important that they recognise Roberto Escobar&#39;s wishes to review the show they are putting out, ensuring the family and viewers of an accurate portrayal of Pablo and Roberto,&quot; he said in the statement.
