The victims, who were boys aged between 12 to 14, were students studying in a school in Daw Si Ei village. The school had around 200 students and was run by former government teachers and local community members. 
 
Meanwhile, two other children were in critical condition after suffering injuries in the head and abdomen. One of the victim's mother reported seeing a plane as well as a fighter jet which flew over the village at 10 am local time on Monday (Feb 5).

“I didn’t even dare to go and look outside in the moments after the bomb dropped,” said Hay Blute Moo, while speaking to The Guardian. “My children were so scared that they hid under the bed and cried after they escaped from the airstrike, especially the youngest one. He hugged me and cried for a long time,” she added.

A 16-year-old boy, who reached the school shortly after the attack happened, said that he witnessed the bodies of three victims, which included his 14-year-old brother.

Myanmar junta extends state of emergency by six months

A court in military-run Myanmar has put up for auction the villa where ex-leader and democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi spent 15 years under house arrest, and set starting bids at 315 billion kyats ($90 million), a source said on Thursday.

Suu Kyi, back in detention since the military overthrew her government in 2021, has been embroiled in a decades-long legal dispute with her brother over ownership of the lakeside villa.

A person with knowledge of the proceedings said the court-ordered auction will be held at the house on March 20.

The court ruled the siblings must share the proceeds from any sale of the house. Aung San Oo, was not immediately available for the comment.

Suu Kyi remains in detention, though her whereabouts are unknown. She faces 27 years in prison convictions for crimes ranging from treason and bribery to violations of the telecommunications law, allegations she denies.

China's foreign ministry said on Friday peace talks were held in the Chinese city of Kunming on Jan 10-11, where "the two sides agreed to immediately cease fire and stop the war."

Both parties also pledged not to harm residents at the Chinese border, said foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning.

"China hopes that all parties concerned in&nbsp;Myanmar&nbsp;will earnestly implement the ceasefire agreement already reached and exercise maximum restraint," she said.

Beijing had also said last month the parties had agreed on a temporary ceasefire and to maintain dialogue.

Local media outlets put the death toll at 15 people, including children, with 20 wounded.

But two witnesses — a man and a woman who asked to remain anonymous for safety — told AFP the toll was higher.

"19 people were killed, including eight children," said the man, who said he saw a junta jet fighter overhead during the attack.

He said the first bombs targeted two churches in the village, and a second attack came as people fled the buildings.

"Most of them were killed outside the church area as they were running to escape," he said.

Women and children were among those killed in the attack, which was made more deadly because of the crowds, he said.

In total, the jet dropped six bombs, he said.

"They targeted the two churches, but bombs hit outside the two churches, and hit some houses," he said.

Another device landed near the community's school, he added.

State media said late Sunday that reports of the attack were "fake news", with MRTV saying there had been no aircraft operating in the area at the time.

The village is under the control of a People's Defence Force (PDF) group, one of many that have sprung up to fight the junta.

The military has designated the groups as "terrorists".

On Sunday, a planned graduation ceremony for new recruits had been relocated to a nearby jungle.

"If they came to bomb our graduation area, we cannot blame them," the man said, referencing the army.

"But they bombed the wrong place and bombed public churches and areas."

He and the woman told AFP that 30 people were wounded.

She warned that the casualty rate could rise, with some people seriously hurt.

They were being treated at a clinic, she said, without giving further details.
