The state government has declared a public holiday and advised people to avoid stepping out of their houses. Several subways and roads have been shut due to water logging and flooding.

Amidst the heavy rain, Thane Municipal Transport had arranged extra buses to ferry passengers up to Mulund check post. The arrangement has been directed by Thane Municipal commissioner after local services were stopped between Kurla and Thane.

The Chief Minister said that the government is prepared to deal with the situation.

"High tide is expected at 12 noon, we will monitor the situation. Last night Mumbai police received 1600-1700 tweets from people, they received immediate help. BMC Disaster Management worked entire night. Heavy rainfall is expected in next two&nbsp;days. We are prepared for it," Fadnavis said.

In Punjab and Haryana, rains remained elusive even as the maximum temperatures were recorded to be between two to five notches above normal. Bhiwani and Narnaul were the hottest places in the twin states with the mercury settling at a high of 42.8 degrees Celsius, three notches above normal.

While Amritsar braved a high of 42.4 degrees Celsius, five notches above normal, the maximum temperature at Ambala was 41.8 degrees Celsius, also five notches above normal.

Moderate rain and thunderstorm were witnessed at isolated places in Eastern Uttar Pradesh even Banda was recorded as the hottest place in the state, recording a temperature of 44.8 degrees Celsius, which is eight degrees above normal.

According to the IMD, rain and thundershowers were observed at many places over Assam, Meghalaya, Chhattisgarh, Kerala, North Interior Karnataka and at most places over Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Arunachal Pradesh and Goa.

The Met office has predicted moderate rainfall with a few spells of heavy showers in the financial capital in the next 24 hours.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said in the last five hours, its weather station has recorded an average rainfall of 43.23 mm in the island city, 64.14 mm in eastern suburbs and 78.21 mm in western suburbs.

The civic body said the flow of road traffic has been reported to be slow, while suburban services of the Central and Western Railways were running behind schedule.

"The city has recorded moderate rainfall in the last few hours. So far, no untoward incident or major water-logging has been reported at the Disaster Management Cell," a senior civic official said.

Meanwhile, heavy showers brought cheers to civic officials who said they will help in improving stock in reservoirs supplying water to the metropolis.

Since monsoon has been playing truant, the civic administration has been forced to use reserve stock of water from its lakes to fulfil the needs of Mumbaikars.

Suburban train services, considered Mumbai's lifeline, were running late by 10 to 15 minutes, said the officer.

According to a BMC spokesperson, due to the ongoing metro rail work and water-logging at some places, a few buses of civic transport undertaking BEST were diverted from their regular routes.

Heavy traffic jam affected the movement of vehicles on the Mulund-Sion stretch of the Eastern Express Highway, he said, adding the BMC had to close a busy subway in suburban Andheri due to water-logging.

The Thane railway station witnessed water-logging on tracks and the local civic administration has been alerted about it by the Central Railway (CR).

"Water entered on tracks from the city area. The TMC (Thane Municipal Corporation) has been informed. The TMC is sending officials to check and do the needful. Our officers are there to help," CR chief spokesperson Sunil Udasi said.

The Western Railway, in a statement, said, several teams of officials along with RPF jawans have been deployed at different locations to ensure the smooth operation of trains.

"Tracks and signals are working well without any failure. Train operation is normal. Today we received a few mail express trains late at Surat from Vadodara due to heavy rains in Vadodara division," said the statement.

Fisherman Steni Admani (66) was struck by lightning, and died on the spot when he was examining his fishing net at around 6 am today, said Shivaji Patil, chief of the District Disaster Control Cell.

Six others, who were out in the open at the time, were also injured due to the lightning and have been admitted to a local hospital, he added.

The incident took place at Patanbunder area of Uttan in Bhayander in the district, he informed.

In another incident, a woman who was riding pillion on a two-wheeler died after the vehicle rammed into a truck on GB Road and an official said that heavy rains probably caused the accident.

The woman has not been identified yet and the man riding the two-wheeler was severely injured and has been admitted to the city civil hospital, the official added.

Incidents of trees falling at several places and water-logging on some roads were also reported across the district, the official added.&nbsp

The government has put the National Disaster Relief Force(NDRF) on alert as several areas were inundated due to rains.

The monsoon arrived in&nbsp;Maharashtra on Friday bringing rains in the city. &nbsp;According to the Meteorological Department, in the next few hours, it may reach the surrounding areas around Mumbai.

At least two flight were cancelled due to flooding, reports said. Hindmata and Lower Parel were flooded on Saturday morning.

"Heavy to very heavy rainfall was recorded in the suburbs till 8.30 am today," IMD Deputy Director K S Hosalikar said.

Meanwhile, trains on the suburban section of the Central Railway (CR) were running late by 10-12 minutes due to the showers, an official said, adding that there were no cancellations.

"There was a case of wall debris falling on tracks this morning on Down slow line. The debris were removed immediately and for some time, trains on down slow line were diverted to the fast line," Sunil Udasi, Chief PRO of CR, said.

Heavy rains lash Mumbai again; flights cancelled

India's Meteorological&nbsp;Department(IMD) said today that there is very less possibility of a deficient monsoon in the country.

The IMD predicted that the&nbsp;monsoon will arrive in Kerela in end May or in the first week of June.

"In the middle of May, we will forecast when monsoon will touch Kerala," the IMD added.

India will experience third successful monsoon this year, it said.

"Last two year India had a good monsoon and this year also we are going to have an effective monsoon," K J Ramesh, Director general IMD said.

The IMD will assess the progress of monsoon once again in June.

"In FY 2017-18, record food production occurred due to successful monsoon," the IMD observed.

The Met said warm water in the surface is the main reason for the successful monsoon.

The monsoon is considered normal if the average rainfall is between 96 to 104 per cent of long period average.&nbsp;

Anything less than 90 per cent of LPA is termed a "deficient' monsoon", and 90-96 per cent of the same is considered "below normal".

The four-month monsoon season provides about 70 per cent of the country's annual rainfall.

Navy ships rescued at least 180 people in the region. The armed forces have also deployed P8I surveillance aircraft, Dornier aircraft&nbsp;and ALH helicopters for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief support.

Cyclone Ockhi: Mumbai gets highest December rainfall in 142 years

Three people, including a four-month-old child, were killed in <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/mumbai-rain-14-dead-as-city-limps-back-to-life-19681" target="_blank">Hyderabad after heavy rain lashed the city on Monday evening</a>.

The downpour has led to heavy water logging in several low-lying areas with traffic disrupted in several parts of the&nbsp;city.

According to a Metrological official, 67.6 mm of rainfall was recorded in the city mainly due to monsoon.&nbsp;

All schools and colleges have been shut in the city due to the continued rainfall.

A physically challenged man and his four-month-old child died in a wall collapse, while another man, 35, was electrocuted, media reports said.

According to Sheikhpet Mandal Revenue Officer S Ramulu, the child and his father, Yadulu were&nbsp;buried under the debris of a wall after&nbsp;their thatched house collapsed at Naidu Nagar due to heavy rains, PTI quoted.

The officials said that bodies were recovered after the rescue operation. The wife of deceased Yadulu and their two-year-old daughter survived the incident.

In an&nbsp;another incident, a person was&nbsp;electrocuted after he accidentally touched a trolley which came in contact with an electric wire.

ANI reported that the person died on the spot.&nbsp;

Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao&nbsp;has urged the state officials&nbsp;to be on alert.&nbsp;

The Hyderabad city police, including traffic police stations, armed reserve, home guards, special branch and other wings have been put on high alert.

They have been instructed to take an active part in flood-related emergencies and attend all emergencies in coordination with other government departments, PTI reported.&nbsp;

In August, Mumbai was lashed by heavy rains. Almost 14 people were killed in Mumbai after floods caused by heavy monsoon rains.

The&nbsp;Boleslawski family of five was travelling from&nbsp;Udaipur, Rajasthan to Aurangabad, Maharashtra when they found themselves stranded in Mumbai after their train to Aurangabad was cancelled. They tried to take shelter at three hotels in Dadar but were turned away due to the commotion caused by the floods.&nbsp;

French tourist family says 'thank you' to Mumbai gurudwara for sheltering them

A 30-year-old man was found dead in his car&nbsp;today morning in Mumbai.&nbsp;

His body was found lying unconscious in a&nbsp;car in <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/light-moderate-rainfall-expected-in-mumbai-today-indian-metrological-department-19653">Sion locality of Mumbai</a>.

Local passersby spotted his car and informed the police. Soon after, police came to take out his body and rushed to the nearby hospital. He was, however, announced brought dead.

It is being speculated that the man was in his car while Mumbai was flooded and owing to automatic locking system in new-age cars, he got locked and was not able to come out in time. It is most likely that he died of suffocation waiting for the water level to go down.&nbsp;

A 30-year-old man was found dead in his car today morning in Mumbai. His body was found lying unconscious in a car in Sion locality of Mumbai. Local passersby spotted his car and informed the police. Soon after, police came to take out his body and rushed to the nearby hospital. He was, however, announced brought dead. It is being speculated that the man was in his car while Mumbai was flooded and owing to automatic locking system in new-age cars, he got locked and was not able to come out in time. As the financial capital stopped in its tracks, no respite was in sight as the MeT department forecast &quot;extremely heavy rainfall&quot; in the next 24 to 48 hours in the western coast of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, and parts of Gujarat and Goa. 
 
Traffic jams were reported on all major arterial roads, including the Eastern and Western Express Highway, Sion-Panvel highway and LBS Marg as the rains continued since last night. 
 
Waterlogging was reported in low-lying areas of Parel and Sion. A tree fell on the busy Saat Rasta road, affecting road traffic. 
 
Suburban services were disrupted with trains on all the three lines--western, central and harbour--running late. 
 
Waterlogging on tracks was reported in Andheri and Bandra, civic officials said. 
 
The city airport saw flight disruptions since morning. 
 
Due to heavy winds and downpour since morning, six to seven flights had to do rounds while landing, while four to five flights were diverted to nearby airports. These included an IndiGo Guwahati-Mumbai flight which was diverted to Ahmadabad, airport officials said. 
 
The single runway of the airport was, however, functional. 
 
A Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport spokesperson said there is an average delay of 35 minutes. 
 
&quot;Heavy rains and strong winds have drastically reduced visibility leading to diversions and go arounds even though the main runway is open,&quot; a Mumbai airport source told PTI. 
 
Suburban rail services, the lifeline of the metropolis, were paralysed. 
 
The Central Railway-run harbour line, which connects CSMT to Panvel, remained suspended since 11:30 am, railways officials said. 
 
Traffic snarls were witnessed on the Eastern Freeway, Dr BR Ambedkar Road, Western Express highway, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Amitesh Kumar said. 
 
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said the situation was well under control and advised citizens to step out of their homes only if necessary.

Low-lying areas, particularly in Central Mumbai, witnessed water logging with people wading in deep waters in Parel.

Normal life was thrown out of gear in India's financial capital Mumbai, with the city being lashed by heavy rains for the last 48 hours, even as incessant showers continue to hit other cities like Pune and Nashik and other parts of Maharashtra. Low-lying areas, particularly in Central Mumbai, witnessed water logging with people wading in deep waters in Parel.
