It also treated 66 people for injuries, Lopes said Friday, adding that four of them were in a serious condition. The police did not immediately confirm this toll.

Burnt vehicles littered the streets on Friday and stone barricades were still in place in some areas, but markets and stores had reopened.

<h2>Rising toll</h2>

Human Rights Watch did not have a toll for Thursday's protests but said it had counted at least 30 dead between October 19 and November 6 across the country.

This includes two opposition figures shot dead on October 19.

Mozambique's Centre for Democracy and Human Rights (CDD) said at least 34 were killed, according to its tally.

"What began as a call for electoral justice has transformed into a brutal display of state repression, with the number of confirmed deaths now at 34," it said in a post on X.

A police officer has also been killed, Defence Minister Cristovao Chume told reporters Tuesday, warning that the army could intervene "to protect the interests of the state".

It appeared the protesters intended to "change the democratically established power", he said.

President Filipe Nyusi is expected to step down at the end of a two-term limit in January and hand over to the party's Daniel Chapo.&nbsp;

The Constitutional Council, which has to confirm the election results around two weeks before then, has asked for clarification about a possible discrepancy in voter numbers.&nbsp;

Election observers, including from the European Union, have noted irregularities in the poll.

<h2>'Protests to continue'</h2>

Mondlane, a 50-year-old former radio presenter, is in hiding and told AFP in an interview Wednesday that he could not reveal his whereabouts other than to say he was not in Africa.

"I feel that there is a revolutionary atmosphere... that shows that we are on the verge of a unique historical and political transition in the country," he said.

His Podemos party, which has demanded a recount, said Friday it would not let up the pressure.

Its calls for demonstrations are to demand "electoral truth", Podemos president Albino Forquilha told reporters.

"We will continue on the streets until we have an answer. We are putting fair pressure and we do not want violence," he said.

Forquilha said Podemos data showed "inconsistencies in the number of voters and the number of registered voters".

The unrest in&nbsp;Mozambique&nbsp;has been linked to disturbances at one of its busiest border posts with South Africa, Lebombo, where there were reports of vehicles being torched.

Miners in Montepuez discovered the remarkable ruby last year, which was transparent and stunningly vivid rough. It weighed a staggering 101 carats. It was dubbed "Estrela de FURA" (or Star of FURA in Portuguese).&nbsp;

The Estrela de FURA was unveiled in Dubai in September 2022 and grabbed worldwide attention as the largest gem-quality ruby ever discovered.&nbsp;

"It is one of the biggest and largest gem-quality ruby that we have ever seen. The colour and the saturation, the clarity together with you know everything that comes together with the ruby, it's just a very fantastic and beautiful piece (sic)," Kim said.&nbsp;

Previously, the world record for a ruby sold at auction was set in May 2015 by a 25.59-carat Burmese stone called "Sunrise Ruby". It had fetched $30.3 million at Sotheby's in Geneva.&nbsp;

Jaishankar is visiting the African nation to bolster ties between the nations. The Indian foreign minister also paid a visit to a Maputo temple where he held interaction with the Indian community.

"Offered my prayers at the Shree Vishvambhar Mahadev Mandir in Maputo this evening. So glad to interact with the Indian community there," Jaishankar tweeted.

Jaishankar highlighted the significance of the long-standing and historic connection that is growing between the two countries as he spoke with the&nbsp;Indian community at the event held by the high commissioner in Maputo on Thursday night.

Jaishankar earlier also met the President of the African country’s Parliament Esperanca Bias. He arrived in Maputo from Uganda.&nbsp;

Following the meet, Jaishankar said both the leaders "reviewed their political cooperation and economic cooperation. She urged me towards a greater expansion of our bilateral partnership. That is what I will be doing over the next two days."

The EAM was given a warm welcome upon his arrival in the African nation.&nbsp;

“Arrived in Maputo to an energetic Mozambican welcome. Thank Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Manuel Jose Goncalves for the warm reception. Look forward to productive discussions,” he tweeted. “As two democracies it’s very important for us to have regular parliamentary exchanges,” he said.

The death toll nearly doubled in the span of a day or so after the record-breaking storm triggered floods, and landslides, and brought heavy rains across various regions of the two nations.&nbsp;

Malawi’s Department of Disaster Management Affairs, in a statement on Tuesday, said that the death toll has risen from 99 to 190 while 584 people were injured and 37 others were reported missing. However, rescue teams working on the ground say they are expecting the death toll to rise in the upcoming days. So far, at least 219 people have been killed in Malawi and Mozambique since Saturday night.&nbsp;

“The situation is very dire…There are many casualties, either wounded, missing or dead, and the numbers will only increase in the coming days”, Guilherme Botelho, emergency project coordinator for Doctors Without Borders (MSF) told AFP. According to reports, rescue efforts in one of the hardest hit areas in Malawi is its commercial hub Blantyre and the surrounding districts witnessed severe flooding and rain damage roads and bridges have hampered rescue operations.&nbsp;

Additionally, mudslides triggered by heavy rains have also made it difficult to get relief while many people are said to have perished and their houses were washed away in Blantyre. “It’s a challenging operation in the sense that there’s been incidents of mudslides and so people are getting stuck in those mud accumulations,” said Estere Tsoka, an emergency specialist at the United Nations children’s agency (UNICEF) in Malawi, reported Reuters.&nbsp;

On Monday, Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera declared a “state of disaster” in the country’s southern region. Meanwhile, Mozambique’s disaster institute on Tuesday confirmed that more than 20 people have died in the country after Cyclone Freddy pummelled central Mozambique.&nbsp;

According to the UN’s meteorological centre on the island of Reunion, the storm will continue to bring extreme rainfall in central Mozambique and southern Malawi till late Wednesday before going back to the sea.
