So we tagged their letters and wrote to the AFC, asking them to either reschedule the match or move the game to a neutral venue," a Mohun Bagan source told PTI on Monday from Kolkata.</p>

<p>"We have decided to not travel to Iran keeping our players' safety and security in mind, because that is paramount. We have also written to the Ministry of External Affairs as their advisory states that you can go to Iran or Israel on your own responsibility," the source added.</p>

<p>The Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 Media Day began in Kolkata on Wednesday (Sep 4) with representatives from seven clubs, i.e. Mohun Bagan Super Giant, East Bengal FC, Mohammedan SC, Odisha FC, Jamshedpur FC, and NorthEast United FC, previewing the upcoming season. The event saw a blend of new and familiar faces, with Mohun Bagan's Jose Molina and Punjab FC's Panagiotis Dilmperis making their ISL debuts as head coaches, while veterans like Sergio Lobera, Khalid Jamil, Juan Pedro Benali, and Carles Cuadrat discussed their strategies for the campaign.</p>

<p>The discussions began with the newly-promoted Mohammedan SC coach Andrey Chernyshov expressing his pleasure at joining the ISL, with his captain Samad Ali Mallick underlining their ambitions to challenge for the playoffs straightaway.</p>

<p>“It’s a nice feeling to be a part of the ISL family. We did a great job last year by winning the I-League. I am thrilled about our supporters. They had been expecting this for many years. I can’t wait to get started with the league,” Chernyshov said.</p>

<h2><strong>Mohun Bagan, East Bengal confident for the season ahead</strong></h2>

<p>The two other Kolkata heavyweights are on their desired track ahead of the coming ISL campaign. Whilst the Mariners embark on the coveted title defence, East Bengal FC are bolstered by solid reinforcements to their squad in the summer.</p>

<p>“It’s a process to prepare the team for the ISL. We have been working together for a month and there are still a few things to improve upon. We are confident in our players and the way we have trained until now,” Jose Molina said.</p>

<p>All India Football Federation (AIFF) chief Kalyan Chaubey, meanwhile, slammed the authorities for cancelling the Durand Cup match between the two teams.</p>

<p>“I believe that football is above religion and caste. I am fully confident that if you organise the match here, there will be no ruckus, no unrest in the football ground, I am fully confident that the people will support their teams peacefully but the match should not be shifted from here. The fans also want that the culprit should be caught as soon as possible and punished," said the former India goalkeeper.</p>

<p>The city has been reeling under protest ever since the brutal gangrape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar medical hospital on August 9. The clamour for justice has been growing throughout the country with medical professionals demanding swift action in the case.</p>

<p>Historic Indian football club Mohun Bagan on Wednesday went global as it became country’s first ever sports entity to feature on NASDAQ billboards in New York’s Times Square.</p>

<p>On July 29 every year, Mohun Bagan Day is celebrated to commemorate the team’s iconic IFA Shield triumph in 1911 when the club defeated East Yorkshire Regiment 2-1 while becoming the first Indian football club to end British dominance on the tournament.</p>

<p>The 131-year-old Kolkata-based club has millions of supporters across the globe but the American stock exchange paying tribute on its billboard holds special significance.</p>

<p>"It is a matter of great pride for all Mohun Bagan fans and supporters. It shows the kind of stature the club enjoys. No Indian sports club has ever featured on something like this, so it is significant, very different," Mohun Bagan's top official Debashis Dutta told PTI.</p>

<p>ATK is owned by the Sanjiv Goenka's RPSG group, whereas Mohun Bagan football team is looked after by Mohun Bagan Football Club (India) Private Limited.</p>

<p>In the deal struck by the two teams, ATK will hold 80 per cent of the team's shares whereas Mohun Bagan will have just 20 per cent.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Swapan Sadhan Bose, Chairman, Mohun Bagan Football Club (India) Pvt&nbsp;Ltd&nbsp;said in an official statement that "In this context, I am very thankful to India's one of the most well-known industrialists and our Kolkata's very own Dr Sanjiv Goenka for his investment through RPSG. <p>The 2017-18 league was down to the most dramatic final day in the competition&#39;s history with as many as four teams, including old guards Mohun Bagan and East Bengal, gunning for the title.</p>

<p>Debutants Neroca FC, surprisingly, were the other contenders.</p>

<p>For a club that is only in its second season in top-flight, the title triumph would easily qualify as some achievement.</p>

<p>In the process, they created history by becoming the first team from North India to win the Hero I-League.</p>

<p>William Asiedu Opoku&#39;s goal was enough to seal the title for Minerva Punjab, who beat Churchill Brothers by a solitary goal.</p>

<p>This is a landmark moment in Indian football where two relegation threatened teams have won back to back I-League titles. Last year it was Aizawl, this year it is Minerva Punjab from Chandigarh.</p>

<p>Churchill Brothers, on the other hand, got relegated as this defeat demotes them to second division.</p>

The 26-year-old, who picked up five wickets playing for Mohun Bagan in the day-night final, said South Asian conditions favoured swing with the pink ball, which was an exciting prospect. "With red or white balls, there was some visibility problem as it took (on) the colour of grass," he was quoted as saying by the Press Trust of India. "Definitely I will prefer this (pink) ball, this is much better. The biggest plus point is (the swing) under lights, what else does a bowler want? It's challenging for both batsmen and bowlers. "If we can maintain the dryness, I'm sure it will reverse. It did (reverse), I noticed." Wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha echoed Shami's sentiments but said pace would prove challenging for batsmen. "Every ball is swinging a bit either way which was never the case with the red (ball). The visibility is perfect," Saha told PTI. "But batsmen will have problem if a pacer consistently bowls at 140 km per hour." (Reuters)
