When it comes to the fight against greenhouse gas emissions, one particular aspect has been left unaccounted- the world's armed forces. As per a 2022 report, militaries account for 5.5 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions. Activists are pressuring the UN to force armies to disclose all their emissions and end a long-standing exemption.

As temperatures hit new highs, scientists & environmental groups are stepping up pressure on the UN. Experts want armies to disclose their emissions & end a long-standing exemption. Lebanon's Hezbollah on Friday denied that five men accused by a military tribunal of killing an Irish UN peacekeeper in 2022 were linked to the armed Shi'ite group.

A court document filed on Thursday had identified some of the five as members of Hezbollah and allied movement Amal, according to a senior Lebanese judicial source.

Hezbollah media official Mohammad Afif said the five accused were not members of the group, which controls the part of southern Lebanon where last year's attack took place, and also denied that the indictment had described them as Hezbollah members.

Private Sean Rooney, 23, was killed on Dec 15 in the first fatal attack on UN peacekeepers in Lebanon since 2015.

Afif said Hezbollah had played a big role after the killing in reducing tensions and in local people's cooperation with the army and judicial investigation.

His comments are the first by a Hezbollah official since Thursday's reported indictment. The Amal Movement, which is headed by Lebanon's parliament speaker, Nabih Berri, has so far declined to comment.

The judicial source had said evidence was drawn from camera recordings in which the accused refer to themselves as members of Hezbollah. A second judicial source confirmed that camera evidence was mentioned in the 30-page court document.

Hezbollah has previously denied involvement in the killing, calling it an "unintentional incident" that took place solely between the town's residents and the UNIFIL peacekeeping force.

The just-released Australia's Defense Strategic Review 2023 under the Albanese Government has highlighted the importance of expanding relationships and practical cooperation with key powers, including India and Japan, as part of its efforts to strengthen regional architecture. The review emphasises the need to grow the defense cooperation program, particularly in the Indian Ocean region, which is of significant strategic interest to Australia.

According to the review, the primary area of military interest for Australia's national defence is the immediate region encompassing the northeastern Indian Ocean through maritime Southeast Asia into the Pacific. This region includes Australia's northern approaches, making it essential for the country's security.

The review also acknowledges the need for Australia to engage with China, one of the key players in the Indo-Pacific region. "Australia will continue to cooperate with China where we can, disagree where we must, manage our differences wisely, and, above all else, engage in and vigorously pursue our own national interest," it says.

However, the review also highlights the growing concerns over China's military build-up and its strategic intentions. "China's military build-up is now the largest and most ambitious of any country since the end of the Second World War. This has occurred alongside significant economic development, benefiting many countries in the Indo-Pacific, including Australia," it notes.

The review goes on to caution that China's lack of transparency and reassurance of its strategic intent in the Indo-Pacific region is a cause for concern. "China's assertion of sovereignty over the South China Sea threatens the global rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific in a way that adversely impacts Australia's national interests. China is also engaged in strategic competition in Australia's near neighbourhood," it says.

Against this backdrop, the review highlights the need for Australia to continue to expand its relationships and practical cooperation with key powers, including India. Taiwan to send largest-ever military troops to US for training: Report

Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin has dropped another bombshell statement, for second day in a row. First, Prigozhin on Monday accused several unnamed officials of refusing to provide the group with key arms supplies out of personal animosity to him. Again on Tuesday he came down heavy on some of the Russian top brass, calling their acts, an act of "treason."

He accused Russia's Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and the nation's most senior soldier, Valery Gerasimov for trying to destroy the Wagner group by deliberately putting roadblocks in ammunition supplies. Wagner said with the ongoing opposition from the officials over the arms supply the group is suffering setbacks in its fight in the town of Bakhmut in Ukraine's Donetsk region.

"There is simply direct opposition going on," Prigozhin said in a voice message posted on his Telegram channel. "This can be equated to high treason". "The chief of the general staff and the defence minister are giving orders right and left not just not to give Wagner PMC ammunition, but not to help it with air transport," Prigozhin said.

This is not the only time when Wagner group chief has criticized senior Russian officials. It has been slamming senior commanders for their "competence." He also blamed the defence ministry is trying to take credit for Wagner successes around the Donetsk region town of Bakhmut.

Additionally, the Wagner chief had said that one of those goals could be to firmly establish its presence in eastern Ukraine or push forward to capture more of the country and that Bakhmut was the key to those plans. “Bakhmut is needed so our troops can operate comfortably”, said Prigozhin. Russia-Ukraine War: Watch the Russian army's new weapons | Putin | Zelenskyy | Kyiv | Kharkiv | Lyiv

Russia, which has one of the largest military forces in the world, has got some harsh estimations thrown up at it by a new think tank report. International Institute of Strategic Studies (IISS) has made an estimation that in the first nine months of Russia's war on Ukraine there has been a substantial decrease in the Russian army's fleets of tanks. How much loss are we talking about? According to the think tank, Moscow may just have lost about 40 per cent of its prewar fleet of tanks.

The estimations were made mostly with the aid of images taken by drones, and satellites from the battlefield from February through November end. However, these are only estimations and cannot be relied upon completely. The think tank went on to say that because of this significant dearth of tanks which is estimated to have gone for up to 50 per cent for few key tanks, Russia is now forced to use its cold war-era weaponry.

In contrast, the think tank said that Ukraine’s tank numbers are estimated to have increased. The reason for this increase is Kyiv's capture of Soviet-era tanks as well as aid received from western allies. John Chipman, the chair of the think tank called the war “a political and military failure for Russia." He said that this is a leadership issue compounded by deficiencies in Moscow's munitions. Chipman also noted that all this transpired even after Kremlin's modernisation efforts.

While launching the think tank's annual Military Balance audit of the world’s armed forces, he said, “Russia’s actions over the past year have raised questions not only over the competence of its military and senior military leadership, but also over command cohesion."

As per the think tank, Russia’s number of tanks in its army may have reduced by 38 per cent from 2,927 to 1,800. Additionally, there may have been heavy losses of its workhorse T-72B3 which is an upgrade to the battle tanks which was in use in 2013.

Despite the losses, the think tank said that Russia still has about 5,000 old tanks in long-term storage and the country with the help of these tanks still has strategic advances. Ukraine, on the other hand, seems to have accentuated in its tank count. Ukraine's tanks have gone up to 953 from 858. Kyiv is estimated to have captured an estimated of 500 tanks from Russia.

Has North Korea restructured its military by adding a separate ICBM unit?

Sudan's ruling military on Saturday completed the final review of the agreement it signed with Russia, authorising the latter to establish a navy base on the Red Sea coast of the African nation.

Sudan's ruling military on Saturday completed the final review of the agreement it signed with Russia, authorising the latter to establish a navy base on the Red Sea coast of the African nation. The deal will now move ahead and be ratified, pending the formation of a civilian government and a legislative body. The African nation has been without a parliament since April 2019 when autocratic leader Omar al-Bashir was overthrown by the military. The completion of the review comes days after Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov arrived in the capital city of Khartoum and met acting Foreign Minister Ali al-Sadiq. Lavrov had said the deal still needed ratification by Sudan's soon-to-be-formed legislative. “They [Russians] cleared all our concerns. The deal has become OK from the military side,” a military official was quoted as saying by The Associated Press. The deal was first officially announced in December 2020, having been agreed upon in principle during al-Bashir's reign. The agreement allows Kremlin to set up a 300-troop-strong naval base. WATCH | Sudan: Protesters demand ouster of military rulers × Additionally, the deal stated that Russia will be able to keep four navy ships that may include a few nuclear-powered ones at strategic Port Sudan on the Red Sea. In exchange for Sudan's permission to set up the base, Russia will provide Sudan with weapons and military equipment. Read more: Russia to establish navy base in Sudan for at least 25 years The agreement lasts for 25 years and could be automatically extended for 10-year periods if none of the parties objects to it. The document states that the Russian navy base should help strengthen peace and stability in the region and isn't directed against any third parties. The western world, however, has been critical of the navy base. The analysts in their assessment have said that Russia is interested in developing its own power dynamic in the region rather than helping Sudan expand its economic power. The base and its strategic importance will allow Moscow to ensure its presence in the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. It will also help Russian ships avoid the long voyages to reach the area.
