<p>The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that more than 300 drones and missiles were launched, but 99 per cent were intercepted.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The Iranian threat met the Israel Defense Force’s aerial and technological superiority together with a strong fighting coalition, that together intercepted most of the threats,” said IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Iran, Sunday, also warned Israel of a larger attack on its territory should it choose to retaliate. “Our response will be much larger than tonight’s military action if Israel retaliates against Iran,” armed forces chief of staff Major General Mohammad Bagheri told the state TV.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He also said that the United States has also been warned against any backing of Israeli retaliation as it would result in American bases being targeted.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The attack on Saturday is apparently a retaliation to what Iran called an Israeli strike on its consulate in Syria’s Damascus, on April 1 that killed seven IRGC officers. However, Israel has neither confirmed nor denied responsibility for the consulate attack.</p>

He was told that it will be a kitchen helper’s job. It's been three months since he was there. I request PM Modi to help us and get our child back. Our tears have dried up now,”' said Azad’s father. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Azad’s father has provided documents&nbsp;of the agreement in Russia, his number, pictures and the current location.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, another Kashmiri, Zahoor Ahmad Sheikh, a resident of the Hajinar Tangdar area of Kupwara in North Kashmir has been missing in Russia as well. He was taken to Russia in December 2023 and since then there has been no contact with him. A picture of him has gone viral on social media where he could be seen with other Indians wearing a combat uniform.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Jammu and Kashmir Students Association has met LG Manoj Sinha and&nbsp;written to the External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. The association has&nbsp;also spoken to the joint secretary of the Ministry of External Affairs regarding Azad’s case and his return to India.&nbsp;</p>

We have written to the Ministry of External Affairs, we have spoken to LG Manoj Sinha and Joint Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs. We have demanded that both of them are repatriated as soon as possible,” said Omar Jamal, National General Secretary of the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association.&nbsp;</p>

<p>All the Indians who are stranded at the Russia-Ukraine borders have appealed to the Government of India for assistance and their safe return. <p>Iraq's Prime Minister's Office confirmed the US attacks in the Iraqi territory and described it as violation of its sovereignty. It also summoned the US envoy in Baghdad.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"In this incident, multiple American aircraft bombed locations in the Akashat and Al-Qa'im regions, including areas where our security forces are stationed, alongside nearby civilian areas," Iraq's Prime Minister's Office said in an official statement.</p>

<p>The strikes “are in direct response to a series of escalatory attacks against US and coalition personnel in Iraq and Syria” by Iranian-backed militia groups, US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin said in a statement.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The US Central Command (CENTCOM) also released a statement saying that their forces “conducted unilateral airstrikes” targeting “KH headquarters, storage, and training locations for rocket, missile, and one-way attack UAV capabilities.”</p>

<p>The strikes, according to US defence officials, were carried out at two sites in western Iraq, Al-Qa’im near the Syrian border and Jurf al-Sakhar south of Baghdad.</p>

<p>AFP report citing Iraqi sources said that the US strikes targeted Ketaib Hezbollah, a militant faction affiliated with the former Hashed al-Shaabi paramilitaries.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Two people were killed and two wounded in the bombardments in the al-Qaim sector, said the Iraqi interior ministry and former member of the Hashed al-Shaabi, whose fighters have been integrated into the regular army.</p>

<p>However, a Reuters report citing a medical source and a militant source said four people were wounded.</p>

<p>A senior&nbsp;Iraqi official later took to X and criticised Washington's move saying that these strikes "do not help bring calm" and called them a "flagrant violation of Iraq's sovereignty".&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Biden under pressure</strong></h2>

<p>According to the Pentagon, US and allied forces in Iraq and Syria have been targeted in more than 150 attacks since mid-October.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The spike in attacks against American forces in the region and Washington’s response to them also comes amid the ongoing war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Therefore, US President Joe Biden has reportedly come under pressure to militarily respond to attacks on US forces despite political sensitivities in Baghdad. In his criticism of US' strikes in Iraq, the senior official also asked Washington to pressure Israel to stop its offensive in Gaza.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The US side should pile on pressure for a halt to the (Israeli) offensive in Gaza rather than targeting and bombing the bases of an Iraqi national body," National Security Adviser Qassem al-Aaraji said in a post on X.</p>

<p>The CENTCOM said the Al Asad airbase which also hosts American troops came under attack by Iran-backed militia with ballistic missiles and rockets on Saturday (Jan 20) evening.&nbsp;</p>

Pakistan killed 10 of its own citizens in strike on Iranian territory: Reports

<p>Chinese duplicate products are nothing new, but this one takes the cake. A Chinese company reportedly knocked off an Iranian military drone, no less, and listed it for sale on Alibaba online marketplace, according to a report on the Vice news website.<br />
<br />
The drone is similar to the one from the Shahed series and was listed without the payload, before being yanked off the site, the report said.</p>

<p>Iran had sold Shahed 136, a so-called loitering munition to Russia. During the ongoing war on Ukraine, Russia reportedly used drones from the Shahed series.</p>

<p>Alibaba removed the listing from the website after the American publication Motherboard reached out for comment, Vice reported.</p>

<p>"Gaza is not an arena for words. It should be for action," Raisi said at Tehran airport before departing for the summit of Arab and Islamic nations in the Saudi Arabian capital Riyadh.</p>

<p>"Today, the unity of the Islamic countries is very important," he added.</p>

<p>This marks the first visit by an Iranian head of state to Saudi Arabia since both Tehran and Riyadh called off decades-long hostility under a China-brokered deal in March.</p>

<p>"The summit will send a strong message to warmongers in the region and result in the cessation of war crimes in Palestine," Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, who is accompanying Raisi, was quoted as saying by the Padolat government website.</p>

<p>Blinken spent the last four days talking and touring throughout the region, holding discussions with the leaders of Palestine, Israel, Iraq and Jordan. On Monday, in the last leg of his trip to West Asia, he landed in Ankara to talk to his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After this meeting, Blinken admitted that his efforts to secure a greater constraint in Israel’s assault on Gaza were still “a work in progress”.</p>

<h2><strong>Blinken walking a fine line</strong></h2>

<p>Blinken in his statement tried to strike a balance while talking about humanitarian pauses in the Gaza conflict.</p>

<p>“We know the deep concern here for the terrible toll on Palestinians – on men, women, and children in Gaza, innocent civilians – a concern that we share and that we’re working on every single day. We’ve engaged the Israelis on steps that they can take to minimise civilian casualties. We’re working very aggressively on getting more humanitarian assistance into Gaza,” Blinken said.</p>

<p>In the declassification of an old spy satellite imagery, which included regions of Iraq, Syria and nearby "fertile crescent" territories of the eastern Mediterranean, &nbsp;hundreds of Roman Empire forts reappeared.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The satellites were used in the 1960s and 1970s for reconnaissance, however, their data is now declassified. Some the the archived images, which were captured by those satellites, are now paving the way for fresh archaeology finds in the zones of the Earth which are generally difficult for researchers to visit.</p>

<p>In the images, the 396 Roman forts were spotted straight from space when the region's aerial survey was carried out in 1934. In this survey, 116 forts were recorded on the eastern frontier of the Roman Empire.</p>

<p>Archaeologists still agree with the conclusions drawn in the nearly century-old study, that Rome was trying to fortify its frontier. &nbsp;</p>

<p>"These forts are similar in form to many Roman forts from elsewhere in Europe and North Africa. There are many more forts in our study than elsewhere, but this may be because they are better preserved and easier to recognise," stated lead author Jesse Casana, who is a professor of anthropology focusing on the Middle East at New Hampshire's Dartmouth College, while speaking to Space.com.</p>

<p>"However, it could also have been a real product of intensive fort construction, especially during the second and third centuries AD," he added. &nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Satellites' clear, precise images - &nbsp;a unique resource for archaeological research&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>The clear and precise images taken specifically by these satellites are most important for the new study.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Because these images preserve a high-resolution, stereo perspective on a landscape that has been severely impacted by modern-day land-use changes, including urban expansion, agricultural intensification and reservoir construction, they constitute a unique resource for archaeological research," stated the authors in the work published in Antiquity on Thursday (Oct 25). &nbsp;</p>

<p>After the images were downloaded, they were processed for hours to spatially correct and georeference the images. &nbsp;</p>

Hundreds of Roman Empire forts in West Asia revealed in declassified spy satellite pics

<p>Around 900 more troops from the United States have arrived in the Middle East or are heading there to bolster air defences for the American military personnel amid a surge in attacks by Iran-affiliated groups, said the Pentagon on Thursday (Oct 26).&nbsp;</p>

<p>American and allied forces in Iraq and Syria have been attacked at least 16 times this month, said US officials. The update also comes a day after the Pentagon confirmed that a total of 21 US service members reported “minor injuries” following drone and rocket attacks on military bases in Iraq and Syria.</p>

<h2><strong>Rise in attacks</strong></h2>

<p>The latest attack, Pentagon spokesman Brigadier General Patrick Ryder told journalists, took place in the autonomous Kurdistan region in northern Iraq on Thursday. However, “no casualties” were reported and “some minor damage to infrastructure.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>Since October 17, “US and coalition forces have been attacked at least 12 separate times in Iraq (and) four separate times in Syria,” said Ryder, referring to the international coalition against the Islamic State.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This comes as tensions soar over the ongoing Israel-Hamas war in the region. The attacks have led US troops to be constantly on alert. During a false alarm at Al-Asad air base in Iraq on Thursday, a civilian contractor died after a cardiac arrest.</p>

<p>“Between Oct. 17-18, 21 US personnel received minor injuries due to drone attacks at Al Assad Airbase, Iraq, and Al-Tanf Garrison, Syria,” Ryder said on Wednesday (Oct 25). He added, “All members returned to duty.”</p>

<h2><strong>US to send troops, warships and fighter aircraft</strong></h2>

<p>Following the recent attacks, the US, in addition to sending troops – whose number is now in thousands – also deployed warships and fighter aircraft to the region since the conflict erupted on October 7 which includes two aircraft carriers in a bid to deter Iran and Iran-backed groups.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Since the beginning of the war, Washington has been one of the biggest supporters of Israel with multiple high-ranking US officials, including President Joe Biden visiting the country in a show of support.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Defence Minister Richard Marles reportedly said that the move was being taken in order to provide assistance to Australian citizens in the Middle East region "if this gets worse." However, the official refrained from giving an exact number of troops that will be sent to the war-hit region.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The deadly strike from Gaza's Hamas on October 7 led to a bloody onslaught on Israeli citizens and it in turn triggered Israeli air strikes on the terrorist group.&nbsp;The Hamas-run Health Ministry said at least 5,791 Palestinians have been killed and 16,297 are injured.</p>

<p>United States President Joe Biden and Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman, on Tuesday (Oct 24) held a phone call to discuss efforts to prevent the ongoing war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas from “expanding” to the rest of the region, said the White House in a statement.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The discussion comes days after Biden said that he believed Hamas’ attack on Israel was aimed at disrupting warming ties between the country and Saudi Arabia.</p>

<h2><strong>What did the two leaders discuss?</strong></h2>

<p>According to a statement released by the White House, both Biden and the Saudi crown prince agreed to pursue broader diplomatic efforts “to maintain stability across the region and prevent the conflict from expanding.”</p>

<p>This comes as several Gulf states, including Saudi Arabia, have expressed concerns about the conflict expanding and how it would affect their national security.&nbsp;</p>

<p>They also welcomed the delivery of humanitarian assistance from Egypt into Gaza and acknowledged that “much more is needed for civilians” to have sustained access to food, water and medical assistance, as per the White House.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This comes as the United Nations reported that no aid entered Gaza on Tuesday (Oct 24).</p>

<p>The UN aid spokesperson Eri Kaneko said around 20 trucks were unable to transport aid to Palestinian civilians without saying why the trucks had not been able to cross into Gaza via the Rafah border crossing.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the White House, the two leaders called for the “immediate release” of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza and welcomed efforts to secure their release.</p>

<p>This comes after Israel said more than 220 people were taken as hostages when the Palestinian militant group launched its surprise attack on the country on October 7.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“They also affirmed the importance of working towards a sustainable peace between Israelis and Palestinians as soon as the crisis subsides, building on the work that was already underway between Saudi Arabia and the United States over recent months,” said the White House.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It added the two leaders have “agreed to remain in close coordination” regarding the same.&nbsp;</p>
