The UN special envoy for Syria said on Sunday that it was "extremely critical" to end the fighting in Lebanon and Gaza to avoid the country being pulled into a regional war.

The UN special envoy for Syria said on Sunday that it was "extremely critical" to end the fighting in Lebanon and Gaza to avoid the country being pulled into a regional war. "We need now to make sure that we have immediately a ceasefire in Gaza, that we have a ceasefire in Lebanon, and that we avoid Syria being dragged even further into the conflict," said Geir Pedersen ahead of a meeting with the Syrian foreign minister in Damascus. "We agree that it is extremely critical that we de-escalate so that Syria is not further dragged into this," he said. At least five members of Iran's security forces were killed Sunday in a "terror attack" in the restive southeast, where authorities have been conducting operations against rebels, local media reported.

The Fars news agency reported that in a "terror attack in Saravan county, in the south of the Sistan-Baluchistan province, five members of the security forces were killed".

Sistan-Baluchistan borders both Afghanistan and Pakistan, and is one of Iran's most impoverished provinces. It is one of the few mainly Sunni Muslim provinces in Shiite-dominated Iran.

For years it has faced unrest involving drug-smuggling gangs, rebels from the Baluchi minority and Sunni extremists.

Fars said that after the attack in Saravan, "units stationed in the region were quickly deployed to pursue the criminals".

Local media reported that those behind the October attack have been killed in the current security operation.

Some 15 militants have been reported killed in Sistan-Baluchistan province since the October attack, including three on Sunday, state television said.

It also said more than 30 suspects have been arrested.

Five Iranian security forces killed in Sistan-Baluchistan terror attack

A lesser-known but escalating crisis is gripping the Middle East, unfolding along the Syrian-Jordanian border — captagon, an amphetamine that's become a multimillion-dollar industry.

This potent drug, as per the Wall Street Journal, is used by everyone, from students to fighters. The drug has entrenched itself in everyday life, cutting across social and economic classes.

A massive trade

According to the WSJ report, smugglers find creative methods to move the drug across borders, from drones and homing pigeons to catapults and child couriers.

The multi-billion dollar drug trade is reportedly fuelling a massive trade that has lined the pockets of Iran-backed militias, including the Hezbollah, which allegedly funnels drug profits into arms procurement to fuel the war against Israel.

Captagon isn't just a street-level problem; it has powerful patrons. Syria's Bashar al-Assad regime is accused of industrialising captagon production to offset the crushing toll of international sanctions.

Syrian and Lebanese operations, often linked with Iran-backed factions, allegedly control vast networks in production, trafficking, and profit, driving the drug's rapid proliferation in the region.

Syria, however, denies any role in the drug trade, despite reports that the Assad regime fetches billions annually from captagon.

According to the Observatory of Political and Economic Networks, a Syrian and Arab research organisation that tracks the captagon trade, the regime fetched an annual average of about $2.4 billion between 2020 to 2022 — roughly one-fourth of Syria's GDP.

US and Captagon

The US sees captagon as a looming threat to stability in allied nations like Jordan and Saudi Arabia.

In 2022, President Biden signed the Captagon Act, demanding a US strategy to disrupt smuggling and build law-enforcement partnerships in the Middle East against captagon networks.

Jordan, which has deployed a third of its army along the border to curb the flow of drugs across its border with Syria, is cracking down hard on smuggling.

The nation's soldiers have even adopted shoot-to-kill policy to deal with the smugglers.

US satellite-guided bombs and intelligence sharing have bolstered Jordan’s operations, yet the drug trade remains rampant.

According to the New Lines Institute, since the start of Gaza conflict, seizures of captagon in Jordan have spiked fourfold and are often accompanied by illicit arms shipment.

Jordan’s antidrug department last year arrested about 35,000 people on drug charges, a 24% increase from the year before. In June, Jordanian authorities foiled two smuggling operations involving nearly 10 million illicit pills, worth up to $200 million, destined for Saudi Arabia.

What is Captagon?

Originally developed in Germany in the 1960s to treat conditions like ADHD.

Its main ingredient as per the report is pseudoephedrine, commonly found in cold and flu medication. The drug itself is versatile and dangerous, often laced with sedatives, stimulants, and even heavy metals—enhancements that increase dependency but heighten health risks.

Captagon was outlawed in the 80s, but Syrian and Lebanese traffickers saw opportunity in its potency and high demand. Production exploded during the Syrian civil war, transforming Syria into a captagon powerhouse.

Potent drug 'captagon' fueling conflict, crime, and party scenes across the Middle East: Report

U.S. officials believe Israel has narrowed down targets in its potential response to Iran's attack this month to military and energy infrastructure, NBC reported on Saturday.

The Middle East remains on high alert for further escalation in a year of war as Israel battles Iran-backed groups Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza. Tehran, a major oil producer, has threatened Israel with severe consequences if the Islamic Republic is attacked.

Israel has repeatedly said it will respond to Iran's missile barrage on Oct. 1, which was launched in retaliation for Israel's military operations in Gaza and Lebanon and the killings of a string of Hamas and Hezbollah leaders.

There is no indication that Israel will target nuclear facilities or carry out assassinations, the NBC report said, citing unnamed U.S. officials and adding that Israel has not made final decisions about how and when to act.

U.S. and Israeli officials said a response could come during the current Yom Kippur holiday, according to the report.

Israeli officials have not publicly commented on the report.

The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah militants erupted a year ago when Hezbollah began launching rockets at northern Israel at the start of the Gaza war, and has sharply escalated in recent weeks.

Israel's military said it continues to operate in southern Lebanon to dismantle Hezbollah infrastructure.

"Over the past day, the IAF (air force) has struck approximately 200 Hezbollah targets deep in Lebanon and southern Lebanon, including terrorist cells, launchers, anti-tank missile posts, and terrorist infrastructure sites," it said.

Israel also said five launches that crossed from Lebanon were intercepted by the air force.

The Israeli military added in a statement on Sunday that one of its reservists and an officer were severely injured in two separate incidents during combat in southern Lebanon, with additional soldiers suffering light to moderate injuries.

The Israeli military also said that it captured a Hezbollah militant in southern Lebanon after discovering an underground tunnel leading to a hideout, where they found an area with weapons and supplies for extended use.

Hezbollah announced a rocket strike on the Tirat HaCarmel transport base in southern Haifa, in a statement on Sunday.

Israel has intensified its military operations in recent weeks, bombing southern Lebanon, Beirut's southern suburbs, and the Bekaa Valley, killing many of Hezbollah's top leaders, and sending ground troops across the border.

Hezbollah, for its part, has fired rockets deeper into Israel.

Israel's expanded operation has displaced more than 1.2 million people, according to Lebanon's government, which says more than 2,100 people have been killed and 10,000 wounded in over a year of fighting. The toll does not distinguish between civilians and combatants, but includes scores of women and children.

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, in a call with Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant on Saturday, expressed "deep concern" about reports that Israeli forces had fired on U.N. peacekeeping positions in Lebanon in recent days and urged Israel to ensure safety for them and the Lebanese military, the Pentagon said.

Five peacekeepers have been injured in three separate incidents since Thursday, the peacekeeping mission UNIFIL has said.

The fighting in the region, which includes all of Tehran's allied militant groups -- Hezbollah, Yemen's Houthis and armed groups in Iraq -- has raised fears that the United States and Iran will be sucked into a full-scale conflict in the oil-producing Middle East.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq said in a statement on Sunday it had targeted a military site in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights with drones as part of its support of the Palestinian people and Lebanon. It said it would continue escalating attacks against Israeli strongholds.

The war in Gaza began after a Hamas-led assault on Oct. 7, 2023, on southern Israeli communities in which 1,200 people were killed and about 250 were taken hostage, according to Israeli tallies.

Israel's military campaign in Gaza, aimed at eliminating Hamas, has killed more than 42,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza's health ministry, and has laid waste to the enclave.

Iran, in a statement issued on Monday (September 30), said that it will not deploy forces to Lebanon or Gaza to confront Israel. However, Iranian hardliners are dissatisfied with President Masoud Pezeshkian's government for its lenient approach following the death of Hezbollah chief Nasrallah, and they are demanding drastic measures from the government. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has the final say in all state matters, vowed that Nasrallah's death "will not be in vain" and urged “all Muslims to stand with the people of Lebanon and the honourable Hezbollah,” but he did not call for any direct retaliation. This has disappointed many in the hardline camp, who were expecting a stronger response. The United States is sending additional troops to the Middle East given escalating tensions between Israel and Lebanon's Hezbollah, the Pentagon said on Monday, declining to specify the precise number or mission of the deployed forces.

"Out of an abundance of caution, we are sending a small number of additional US military personnel forward to augment our forces that are already in the region," Air Force Major General Patrick Ryder, a Pentagon spokesperson, told reporters.

After almost a year of war against Hamas in Gaza, Israel is shifting its focus to its northern frontier, where Hezbollah has been firing rockets into Israel in support of its ally Hamas.

Multiple passengers have been disembarked from flights by immigration staff at airports to curb the rising numbers of Pakistani nationals being involved in begging in Middle Eastern countries, according to a report by Dawn.

Multiple passengers have been disembarked from flights by immigration staff at airports to curb the rising numbers of Pakistani nationals being involved in begging in Middle Eastern countries, according to a report by Dawn. There's growing dissatisfaction in Middle Eastern countries about the increased number of Pakistani beggars, which has prompted authorities in Pakistan to use enhanced screening methods for passengers travelling to those countries, a senior Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) official told Dawn. As per the report, these people disguise themselves as tourists to reach countries like Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Iraq, Iran, Oman, and Turkiye. Also read: Statue depicting Pakistan Army’s 1971 surrender to India vandalised in Bangladesh Senate Standing Committee on Overseas Pakistanis was told that around 90 per cent of the beggars arrested abroad were Pakistani nationals. The increasing number of Pakistani beggars overseas is raising concerns among government officials. The Interior Ministry of Pakistan has allegedly disembarked 44,000 people over similar suspicions in less than three years, according to the report. Groups of individuals, often posing as religious tourists, primarily come from districts in South Punjab and use Multan airport for travel, FIA sources told Dawn. In addition to the strict actions by Pakistani authorities, UAE officials are also enforcing stringent measures. According to travel agents, they are denying visas to Pakistanis who cannot demonstrate sufficient funds in their accounts to prove they are “genuine visitors.” Also read: Afghanistan's Taliban rulers score diplomatic wins, consolidate power Multiple foreign embassies, particularly from Western and African countries, handle their visa services for Pakistan through the UAE. Travel agents are concerned that stricter scrutiny could impact travellers needing to visit these countries, as they must attend interviews in the UAE. Although the authorities have taken measures on their part, they have also requested that Middle Eastern and Gulf nations enforce stricter visa policies. A senior FIA officer said that these countries should review their visa processing systems instead of solely urging Pakistani authorities to prevent potential beggars, criminals, and illegal immigrants. The FIA official mentioned that these nations should ask for bank statements, property records, and tax documents with visa applications to confirm that travellers can financially support themselves during their stay like Western countries do. German court rejects motion to stop the federal government from supplying arms to Israel According to media reports, a Berlin court on Friday denied a plea to stop German military sales to Israel. This was the second legal attempt to stop the federal government from supplying arms to Israel, made by a father and son from the Gaza Strip. The first attempt was an urgent request to stop the export of German weapons to Israel by a number of Gazans which was also rejected by a Berlin administrative court. This time around the Palestinian request sought to halt arms shipments through what is known as interim legal protection. However, the higher court noted that it's impossible to definitively predict the future decisions of the federal government or the specific legal and factual circumstances under which these decisions will be made. The court also stated that it cannot be predicted if the German government would authorise arms deliveries that breach international law. Israel’s army chief promises to hunt down new Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar

The US is deploying additional military might in the Middle East as a defensive measure with a goal of de-escalating tensions in the region, a White House official said on Sunday.

The military claimed that an Israeli attack had hit Hamas command centres, but Gaza's civil defence service said that the strike had struck two schools in Gaza City on Sunday, killing at least 30 people. Based on a count of tolls previously provided by Hamas officials, these make up the total number of schools in Gaza that have been attacked since July 6 at least 11, killing around 150 people. "The number of martyrs in the massacre of the Hassan Salameh and Al-Nasr schools' bombing has risen to 30. Dozens were also wounded," civil defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal told AFP. According to a civil defence spokesman, women and children made up the majority of the wounded and deceased. He stated that the schools housed Palestinians who had been displaced as a result of the continuing conflict between Israel and Hamas terrorists. The two schools were the target of an attack that was verified by the Israeli military. Watch | Security chiefs accuse Israeli PM Netanyahu of sabotaging hostage talks, says report × The Israeli military said in a statement, "The schools were used by Hamas' Al-Furqan Battalion as a hiding place for its terrorist operatives and as command centres." According to the civil defence agency, a similar Israeli attack happened on Saturday in Gaza City, hitting another school compound and killing at least 17 people. Hamas has been accused by the Israeli military on many occasions of hiding its commanders and militants and utilising civilian buildings as command and control centres. Hamas refutes these accusations According to an AFP count based on official Israeli data, 1,197 people, mostly civilians, lost their lives in the October 7 attack by Hamas militants in Israel, which marked the start of the Gaza War. Militants also abducted 251 persons, 111 of whom are still hostages in Gaza, including 39 who the IDF claims are dead. The health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza, claims that Israel's retaliation has killed at least 39,583 people. Nations advise citizens to leave Lebanon as war fears surge On Sunday, the urgency for foreign nationals to leave Lebanon intensified, with France warning of a tense situation as Iran and its allies prepared to react to high-profile killings attributed to Israel. Saudi Arabia, along with France, Canada, and Jordan, urged their citizens to leave Lebanon. The United States and Britain issued similar warnings. France also advised its nationals in Iran to "temporarily leave," citing potential closures of Iranian airspace and airports. Israel Hamas war: Israeli strikes hit Gaza schools, hospital; nations advise citizens to leave Lebanon

The United States is leading a diplomatic dash to deter Israel from striking Lebanon's capital Beirut or major civil infrastructure in response to a deadly rocket attack on the Golan Heights, five people with knowledge of the drive said.

Washington is racing to avert a full-blown war between Israel and the Iranian-backed Lebanese movement Hezbollah after the attack on the Israeli-occupied Golan killed 12 youths at the weekend, according to the five people who include Lebanese and Iranian officials plus Middle Eastern and European diplomats.

Israel and the US have blamed Hezbollah for the rocket strike, though the group has denied responsibility.

The focus of the high-speed diplomacy has been to constrain Israel's response by urging it against targeting densely populated Beirut, the southern suburbs of the city that form Hezbollah's heartland, or key infrastructure like airports and bridges, said the sources who requested anonymity to discuss confidential details that haven't been previously reported.

Lebanon's deputy parliament speaker Elias Bou Saab, who said he had been in contact with US mediator Amos Hochstein since Saturday's Golan attack, told Reuters Israel could avert the threat of major escalation by sparing the capital and its environs.

"If they avoid civilians and they avoid Beirut and its suburbs, then their attack could be well calculated," he said.

Israeli officials have said that their country wants to hurt Hezbollah but not drag the region into all-out war. The two Middle Eastern and European diplomats said Israel hadn't made any commitment to avoiding strikes on Beirut, its suburbs or civil infrastructure.

The US State Department said it wouldn't comment on the specifics of diplomatic conversations, though it was seeking a "durable solution" to end all cross-border fire. "Our support for Israel's security is ironclad and unwavering against all Iran-backed threats, including Hezbollah," a spokesperson told Reuters.

White House spokesperson John Kirby told reporters that Israel had every right to respond to the Golan strike, but that nobody wanted a broader war. "As for conversations over the weekend, you bet we've had them and we had them at multiple levels," he added. "But I'm not going to detail the guts of those conversations."

The Israeli Prime Minister's office didn't respond to a request for comment, while Hezbollah declined to comment.

The five people with knowledge of the diplomatic push over the past two days have either been involved in the conversations or briefed on them. They said the efforts aimed to achieve a calibrated approach similar to that which contained April's exchange of missile and drone attacks between Israel and Iran, sparked by an Israeli strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus.

An Iranian official said the United States had also conveyed messages to Tehran at least three times since Saturday's attack on the Golan Heights, "warning that escalating the situation would be detrimental to all parties."

Hezbollah is the most powerful of Iran's "Axis of Resistance" network of regional proxy groups and is allied with the Palestinian group Hamas. It has been trading fire with the Israeli military across Lebanon's southern border since the Gaza war erupted last October.

During a 2006 war, the last time Israel and Hezbollah fought a major conflict, Israeli forces bombed Beirut's southern suburbs, known as the Dahiya, hitting Hezbollah-affiliated buildings as well as residential towers. The Israeli Homefront Command, a military unit responsible for protecting civilians, has not changed any of its instructions to citizens so far, an indication that the military is not expecting imminent danger from Hezbollah or any other group.

On Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's security cabinet, which comprises 10 ministers and has dictated policy on the Gaza war and Hezbollah, authorized the premier and the defence minister to "decide on the manner and timing of the response" against Hezbollah.

This decision, coupled with the abstention of Netanyahu's far-right coalition partners - Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir - suggests that Israel has opted for a response short of the all-out war that some politicians have advocated for.

US rushes to prevent Israel-Lebanon conflict after Golan Heights attack

Several rockets were launched on Thursday and Friday against bases hosting troops from the US-led anti-jihadist coalition in Iraq and Syria, security officials and a war monitor said.

Several rockets were launched on Thursday and Friday against bases hosting troops from the US-led anti-jihadist coalition in Iraq and Syria, security officials and a war monitor said. Such attacks were frequent early in the war between Israel and Hamas Palestinian militants in Gaza but since then have largely halted. "Four rockets fell in the vicinity" of Ain al-Assad base in Anbar province, an Iraqi security source said. Another security official said an attack occurred with "a drone and three rockets" that fell close to the base perimeter. A United States official said initial reports indicated that projectiles landed outside the base without causing injuries or damage to the base. All sources spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorised to speak to the media. At least one rocket also fell near a base of the coalition in the Conoco gas field in Deir Ezzor province of eastern Syria, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights war monitor. The Observatory said a blast was heard in the area but there were no immediate reports of casualties. The rocket was fired from "zones under the control of pro-Iranian militia" groups, said the monitor which relies on sources inside Syria. Watch | US urges Israel to think of a 'realistic truce plan', Hamas says 'Netanyahu stalling ceasefire deal' × There was no immediate claim of responsibility for either attack. Iran-backed armed groups in Iraq have largely halted similar attacks on US-backed troops in recent months. The latest attack come after a security meeting this week between Iraqi and US officials in Washington on the future of the international anti-jihadist coalition in Iraq. Iran-backed groups have demanded a withdrawal. The US Defense Department said Wednesday "the delegations reached an understanding on the concept for a new phase of the bilateral security relationship". This would include "cooperation through liaison officers, training, and traditional security cooperation programmes". On July 16, two drones were launched against Ain al-Assad base, with one exploding inside without causing injuries or damage. A senior security official in Baghdad said at the time he believed the attack was meant to "embarrass" the Iraqi government before the security meeting. For more than three months, as regional tensions soared over the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, United States troops were targeted by rockets and drones more than 175 times in the Middle East, mainly in Iraq and Syria. The Islamic Resistance of Iraq, a loose alliance of Iran-backed groups, claimed the majority of the attacks, saying they were in solidarity with Gaza Palestinians. In retaliation, US forces launched dozens of strikes against Tehran-backed fighters. Since then, attacks against US troops have largely halted. Baghdad has sought to defuse tensions, engaging in talks with Washington on the future of the US-led coalition's mission in Iraq. The US military has around 2,500 troops in Iraq and 900 in Syria with the international coalition. The coalition was deployed to Iraq at the government's request in 2014 to help combat the Islamic State group, which had taken over vast swathes of Iraq and neighbouring Syria. IS remnants still carry out attacks and ambushes in both countries. Disclaimer: This story has been published from a news agency feed with minimal edits to adhere to WION's style guide. Rockets target US-led coalition bases in Iraq and Syria

Yemen's Iranian-backed Houthi group claimed on Wednesday (Jun 26) to have used a domestically developed hypersonic missile in an attack on a cargo ship in the Arabian Sea earlier this week, Xinhua reported. This development came amid escalating tensions in West Asia and attacks on shipping in the Red Sea and surrounding waterways.

The rebel group released a video statement purporting to show the launch of the missile, which is dubbed "Hadim 2". They, however, didn't disclose the exact timing of the attack. The report stated that the long and yellow rocket with Roman numerals on its fins was seen in the video being launched from a mobile platform in an unidentified desert location.

Houthi claimed in the video that the statement described the Hadim 2 as a solid-fuel hypersonic ballistic missile manufactured by Houthi military facilities. It also added that this marked the first public revelation of the missile.

The news agency Reuters reported that Houthi said on Tuesday (Jun 25) that they used a new ballistic missile to hit the MSC Sarah V vessel in the Arabian Sea, claiming responsibility for an attack reported a day earlier.

The Red Sea and Gulf of Aden Joint Maritime Information Center on Monday (Jun 24) said the Liberian-flagged vessel was targeted by a missile in the Arabian Sea. They said it was not hit.

Yahya Sarea, the Yemeni group's spokesperson, claimed an "accurate and direct" hit on the ship, describing the vessel as "Israeli".

According to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), the crew were reported safe and that the vessel, which was sailing 246 nautical miles off Yemen's Nishtun when it was targeted, was heading to its next port of call.

Houthis say they used 'home-made hypersonic missile' to attack ship in Arabian Sea: Report

A gunman fired shots at the US embassy in Lebanon on Wednesday and was wounded in an exchange of fire with troops, the Lebanese army said.

The army said the attacker, a Syrian national, was detained and taken to hospital for treatment and soldiers were searching through the area for other gunmen.

The US embassy said small arms fire was reported near its entrance in the morning but that the facility and staff were safe. US ambassador Lisa Johnson is currently travelling outside Lebanon, according to diplomatic sources.

A Lebanese security source told Reuters on Wednesday morning that a member of the embassy's Lebanese security team was lightly wounded. White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan later confirmed to NBC News that a Lebanese guard was wounded and was receiving treatment.

The embassy said it would remain closed to the public for the rest of Wednesday but planned to be open for business as usual on Thursday, June 6.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, but another senior Lebanese security source told Reuters that the army was investigating possible links to the Islamic State group.

The source said the attacker had "ISIS" in English and "Islamic State" in Arabic written on clothes he was wearing. Lebanese security forces have detained two sheikhs as well as the attacker's family, the source added.

Reuters verified pictures of the suspected attacker circulating online and geolocated them to near the embassy. Reuters verified part of the Arabic writing on his vest, which read "Islamic."

A Reuters cameraman saw Lebanese security forces setting up checkpoints around the embassy as a U.S.-made helicopter provided to the Lebanese army circled above.

Lebanon's caretaker prime minister Najib Mikati said he was following up on the incident with the defence minister and security forces.

The US embassy lies north of Beirut in a highly secured zone with multiple checkpoints along the route to the entrance. It moved there from Beirut following a suicide attack in 1983 which killed more than 60 people.

In September, shots were fired near the embassy with no injuries reported.

In mid-October, in the early days of the Gaza war, scores of protesters gathered outside the embassy to demonstrate. Lebanese security forces used tear gas and water cannons to repel them.

Gunman wounds guard in attack on US Embassy in Lebanon, army investigates ISIS links

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Sunday (April 14) warned the international community against descending deeper into conflict as Israel called for "all possible sanctions" against Iran.

Guterres was addressing the Security Council meeting which was held to address the weekend attack by Iran on Israel in which Tehran fired more than 300 missiles and drones at Tel Aviv in response to the attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria.

"Neither the region nor the world can afford more war. The Middle East is on the brink," said Guterres, while speaking at the Security Council.

"The people of the region are confronting a real danger of a devastating full-scale conflict. Now is the time to defuse and de-escalate," he said and appealed for "maximum restraint."

In his speech, Guterres condemned the strikes launched by Iran on Israel and the attack allegedly carried out by the Israeli government at the Iranian consulate in Damascus.

"It's time to step back from the brink. It is vital to avoid any action that could lead to major military confrontations on multiple fronts in the Middle East," said Guterres.

He also further appealed for an "immediate humanitarian ceasefire" in Gaza, which as per the experts is on the brink of famine.

During the Security Council session, which was called by Israel to address the simmering crisis, Ambassador Gilad Erdan appealed to the council to "take action (and) condemn Iran for their terror."

The Security Council must "impose all possible sanctions on Iran before it's too late," he said.

He said that Iran had violated international law and played a video in which Israel was seen intercepting Iranian drones above the Al-Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem.

Erdan further appealed to the body to designate Iran's Revolutionary Guards as a terror organisation.

"The snooze button is no longer an option. The only option is to condemn Iran and utilise every means necessary to make them pay a heavy price for their horrible crimes," said Erdan, in the meeting.

Hence, Tehran "had no choice" but to respond, Iravani said, further stating that his country does "not seek escalation or war," but they will respond to any "threat or aggression".

"If the US initiates military operations against Iran, its citizens, or its security and interests, Iran will use its inherent right to respond proportionately," Iravani said.

Now is the time to defuse and de-escalate," he said and appealed for "maximum restraint." In his speech, Guterres condemned the strikes launched by Iran on Israel and the attack allegedly carried out by the Israeli government at the Iranian consulate in Damascus. It is vital to avoid any action that could lead to major military confrontations on multiple fronts in the Middle East," said Guterres. He also further appealed for an "immediate humanitarian ceasefire" in Gaza, which as per the experts is on the brink of famine. Israel and Iran face each other over attacks During the Security Council session, which was called by Israel to address the simmering crisis, Ambassador Gilad Erdan appealed to the council to "take action (and) condemn Iran for their terror." The Security Council must "impose all possible sanctions on Iran before it's too late," he said. He said that Iran had violated international law and played a video in which Israel was seen intercepting Iranian drones above the Al-Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem. Erdan further appealed to the body to designate Iran's Revolutionary Guards as a terror organisation.
