The threat of a $1 trillion U.S. sanctions hit on the Chinese internet giants that have led emerging market stocks to their first record high since 2007 is overshadowing the rally, just as increased scrutiny from Beijing itself squeezes valuations.

US-Sino tensions ratcheted up in recent days as outgoing President Donald Trump`s administration pushed through a ban on Americans investing in 35 firms it considers to be linked to China`s military.

Sources in Washington last week said Trump was considering adding Alibaba and Tencent, worth a combined $1.3 trillion, the second and third biggest EM stocks in the world and held by almost every major U.S. investment fund, to the list of banned firms.

Targeting China`s two most valuable companies would be the most dramatic step yet against the country`s firms as Trump seeks to cement his hardline policy against Beijing during his final days in office.

Goldman Sachs estimates that U.S. investors hold roughly $1 trillion of Chinese internet and tech stocks, or have U.S. listings known as American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) that Washington has also been clamping down on.

"To unwind 1 trillion of investment (if Alibaba and Tencent were removed) is a lot!" said Vivian Lin Thurston, a portfolio manager and Chinese equity analyst at William Blair Investment Management.

"It would be unprecedented," she added. "It hasn`t happened before in any global market."

Swiss bank UBS calculates that just over a third of Alibaba`s $616 billion market cap is held by U.S. investors, while 12% of Tencent`s $35 billion value is.

The two firms also account for almost 11% of MSCI`s $7 trillion Emerging Market index which they respectively joined in 2015 and 2008. Chinese firms now make up 40% of the index, up from just 17% a decade ago.

THE BIG UNWIND

Global index providers such as MSCI, S&P Dow Jones and FTSE Russell as well as the New York Stock Exchange have been forced to eject high profile firms on Trump`s list like China Mobile, China Telecom and semiconductor giant SMIC from their top benchmarks.

William Blair`s Lin Thurston explained how those removals then trigger a wave of selling by investment funds that passively track the indexes.

"As soon as it is delisted - bang it`s gone," she said referring to the need to shed the stocks.

While incoming President Joe Biden could reverse the ban, analysts at UBS say the new administration may not want to appear "soft" on China.

Neither Biden nor his team have commented on the matter, but a reversal still wouldn`t undo the billions of dollars of disruption already caused.

Chinese investors have swooped in to buy up some of the offloaded shares but may struggle to absorb everything if things snowball.

Goldman Sachs estimates there would be a $28 billion selloff if every international fund tracking MSCI`s main global, emerging market or Asia indexes were to liquidate holdings of the 42 Chinese firms its views as at risk, not including Tencent or Alibaba.

It and fellow Wall Street banks JPMorgan and Morgan Stanley have also said they will withdraw as many as 500 Hong Kong-listed structured products they had issued linked to the Chinese firms.

ANT PROBLEMS

The Trump administration has had both Tencent and Alibaba`s financial technology affiliate Ant Group in its crosshairs for some time.

Just last week, Trump signed an executive order banning U.S. transactions with Alibaba`s Alipay mobile payment app and Tencent`s WeChat and QQ Wallet over concerns they could be used to "track the locations of federal employees" and "build dossiers of personal information".

China`s foreign ministry responded saying the U.S. was abusing its power and unreasonably suppressing foreign firms with the measures.

Tencent and Alibaba have declined to comment.

In early November, it was Beijing itself though that rattled investors after the surprise suspension of Ant Group’s $37 billion public listing, set to be the world’s largest stock market debut, with just days to go.

Alibaba, which owns about a third of Ant, has seen its market value shrink by more than a quarter since the IPO was shelved and regulators zeroed in on its business model, although it is still among the biggest 10 companies globally with a valuation of more than $600 billion.

Some fund managers considered Beijing`s move a sensible one as Ant, a major online lender, lacked adequate capital buffers. But others like Aviva Investors` Head of Global Emerging Market Equities Alistair Way are concerned.

"We have become rather more nervous about the regulatory climate in China and the seeming desire to reduce competitive dominance of big e-commerce players such as Alibaba," he said.

"In aggregate we have been reducing exposure to Chinese internet firms."

Standard Life Aberdeen senior investment director Nick Robinson is also unsure.

"It feels unlikely at the moment that they (Alibaba and Tencent) will be added to the blacklist, but so far it hasn`t been right to bet on a de-escalation."

"So could it happen? Absolutely. And if it does happen it could be quite significant."

A trio of young entrepreneurs has come up with the idea of adding a unique, and slightly weird, ingredient to their food startup's menu to bring in the flavour of healthy and environment-friendly food.

Labelled 'Chapi', the food company has added grasshoppers to their menu with the aim of promoting healthy food, as the insects are known to have high nutritional value, easy cultivation and processing. The demand for the insect has increased in the last few years with an increase in the use in various recipes and food products.

WATCH| × The founders have also claimed that their carbon footprint is way less than others as 100 grams of grasshopper meat generate almost 14 times less carbon footprint in comparison to 100 grams of beef. Their company's name stands for food items made out of 'Chapulin', which is a Nahuatl word for a grasshopper and has been a popular addition to the Mexican cuisine for long.
The number of journalists killed as a result of their work more than doubled in 2020, an international media watchdog group said Tuesday, with armed conflict and gang violence making Mexico and Afghanistan among the deadliest countries for reporters globally.

At least 30 journalists were killed worldwide this year, according to the watchdog group, the Committee to Protect Journalists, with 21 of those killings carried out as a direct response to the reporters’ work, compared to 10 in 2019.

“It’s appalling that the murders of journalists have more than doubled in the last year, and this escalation represents a failure of the international community to confront the scourge of impunity,” Joel Simon, the CPJ’s executive director, said in a statement.

While the total number of killings rose in 2020, the number of deaths related to conflict fell to its lowest level since 2000, according to the CPJ, with waning violence in the Middle East and fewer reporters traveling because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Still, while fewer journalists were caught in the crossfire of war in 2020, at least four were killed because of their work in Syria and Afghanistan, according to the CPJ. A fifth killing in Afghanistan on Monday is still being investigated, the group said.

Among those killed in Afghanistan was Malalai Maiwand, a television and radio reporter who was fatally shot while on her way to work this month.

In Iran, authorities executed journalist Ruhollah Zam this month because of his reporting on anti-government protests in 2017.

The Philippines had three targeted killings of journalists in 2020.

Mexico was the deadliest country in the Western Hemisphere, with four journalists assassinated and a fifth gunned down while reporting on a crime scene. The CPJ is still investigating the deaths of four more Mexican reporters.

“We still have the same situation of impunity, of violence, of collusion between authorities and criminal groups, and that makes us very concerned,” said Jan-Albert Hootsen, the CPJ’s Mexico representative.

Conflict between rival drug-trafficking groups has led to violence in almost every sector of Mexican society, with homicides nearly doubling in the past five years. Reporters have often been caught up in the conflict, which has claimed more than 31,000 lives this year alone.

But increasingly, Mexican journalists have also found themselves targeted by organized crime or corrupt politicians because of their work, while the killers go unpunished more often than not.

“The outlook is bleak,” said Leopoldo Maldonado, regional director for Mexico and Central America at Article 19, a British press freedom organization.

“There is a specific intention to censor through violence,” Maldonado said, “and the subsequent impunity guarantees that these attacks are not punished.”

While killings of journalists have rarely resulted in guilty verdicts in Mexico, two high-profile cases did bring convictions this year, including a 50-year prison sentence for the killer of investigative journalist Miroslava Breach Velducea in 2017, according to the CPJ.

But in both cases, it was the hired guns who were convicted while those suspected of orchestrating the killings remain unpunished.

“We haven’t advanced even a centimeter in creating a safer environment for journalism,” said Témoris Grecko, a Mexican reporter and author of “Killing the Story: Journalists Risking Their Lives to Uncover the Truth in Mexico.” He added, “Killing a journalist comes free of charge.”

Adding fuel to the fire, advocates said, is the steady disparagement of the press from those in power.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador of Mexico, who campaigned on a vow to tackle violence and corruption in Mexico, has insisted that his government would “never, ever limit freedom of expression.”

But the Mexican leader has frequently criticized negative coverage of his administration.

In September, López Obrador presented an analysis of opinion pieces published in the Mexican news media showing that two-thirds had taken a negative view of the government.

Not in more than 100 years, López Obrador said, “has a president been attacked so much.”

The Mexican leader has also called out the international news media, including The New York Times, saying in October that the news organization “doesn’t have professionalism and they lack ethics above all.”

Such comments from the nation’s highest office are only contributing to the problem, according to free-press advocates.

Mexican Senate approves bill to legalise Marijuana

The Mexican Senate on Thursday approved a comprehensive adult-use marijuana legalization bill, but the pending law still faces some hurdles before doors are fully open to business opportunities in Latin America’s second-largest consumer market.

Senators voted 82 to 18 to approve the measure, with seven abstentions.

Lawmakers are rushing to secure final approval before the end of the current congressional session in December. If enacted, the reform would mark a major shift in a country where drug cartel violence in recent years has claimed over 100,000 lives.

The Supreme Court ruled in 2018 that recreational marijuana should be permitted, just one year after lawmakers legalized it for medicinal use.

Socially conservative President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has shied away from publicly backing the legalization push, but neither has he opposed it, and senior cabinet members like Interior Minister Olga Sanchez have openly called for a shift to legalization and regulation.

Lopez Obrador’s left-of-centre Morena party, which backed the initiative, holds a majority in both chambers of Congress with its allies.

The bill aims to “improve living conditions” and “contribute to the reduction of crime linked to drug trafficking,” according to its text.

Weed companies have expressed interest in a future Mexican legal market, including Canada's Canopy Growth WEED.TO and The Green Organic Dutchman TGOD.TO, as well as a unit of California-based Medical Marijuana Inc MJNA.PK.

The legislation would let users carry up to 28 grams and grow as many as four plants at home.

Sales to adults in authorized businesses would be allowed, provided the product abides by maximum levels of psychoactive ingredients.

Children would be prohibited from using the drug or any involvement in its cultivation and sales, and driving while high would be illegal.
