U.S. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania were in the spotlight outside the White House on Sunday night (October 25) to host families for a Halloween event -- when suddenly their miniature lookalikes came along and stole the show.

Wilton Gregory, the first African American to be named as cardinal and known as a refined diplomat, made headlines when he blasted President Donald Trump’s photo opportunity hoisting a Bible at a Washington church after police used tear gas to clear demonstrators in June.

Gregory, who was among 13 new cardinals named by Pope Francis on Sunday, was installed as the first Black archbishop of Washington, D.C. in 2019. He turns 73 just days after the naming ceremony for new cardinals next month.

Pope Francis on Sunday said Gregory was picked with others from Rwanda, the Philippines and elsewhere to wear the revered red cap.

An outspoken civil rights advocate, Gregory has addressed the death of George Floyd, an unarmed Black man who died after a white Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes in May.

In June, he blasted Trump`s visit to a Washington shrine honoring Pope John Paul II, a day after police and armed soldiers used tear gas and rubber bullets to clear protesters so Trump could be photographed in front of a historic Washington church holding up a Bible.

"I find it baffling and reprehensible that any Catholic facility would allow itself to be so egregiously misused and manipulated in a fashion that violates our religious principles, which call us to defend the rights of all people, even those with whom we might disagree," Gregory said in a statement before Trump and first lady Melania Trump arrived at the Saint John Paul II National Shrine.

Gregory also has been a leader in aggressively addressing the Roman Catholic Church`s sexual abuse scandals and shoring up the church`s zero-tolerance policy.

Leading Catholic organizations cheered the choice and noted Pope Francis was sending a clear message "in the midst of our nation`s reckoning in systemic racism, as millions assert that Black Lives Matter," said Johnny Zokovitch, executive director of Pax Christi USA, a national Catholic peace and justice organization based in Washington, D.C.

"It`s validation of the archbishop`s opposition this past summer of President Trump using the St. John Paul II Shrine for a photo op when the president`s policies are so radically contrary to our faith and the teachings of the church," Zokovitch said in a statement.

The move was also praised by the head of the nation`s largest Catholic community, Archbishop Jose Gomez of Los Angeles, who is president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, a position once held by Gregory.

"Pope Francis is sending a powerful message of hope and inclusion to the Church in the United States. The naming of the first African American cardinal from the United States gives us an opportunity to pause and offer thanks for the many gifts African American Catholics have given the Church," Gomez said.

US Election 2020: FLOTUS Melania Trump and her recent controversies

US election 2020: Trump family finally wears facemasks at the last presidential debate

Since getting tested for the novel coronavirus, Melania Trump has maintained a low profile and had cancelled all her public appearances. However, she made her first appearance since recovery on Wednesday during the final presidential debate.

Melania Trump was spotted supporting her husband and the current US President Donald Trump as he debated his Democratic rival and former Vice President Joe Biden few days before the US elections.

The First Lady had stayed back in the White House after her diagnose, while the President had shifted to the army hospital. Her condition, reports claim, had been more stable than the President's — a reason for which could be her younger age, the President had joked in an address.

The debate hall also saw the presence of Donald Trump's children Ivanka, Tiffany and Eric who were, in a rare moment, spotted wearing face masks this time at the debate hall in the Belmont University in Nashville.

Jill Biden, Joe Biden's wife, was also spotted in the room who came out to support her husband. Jill, too, was wearing a face mask, like last time.

Many believe that the only reason the Trump family was wearing masks this time, unlike last time, was because the Belmont University had made it mandatory for all attendees to cover their mouths and noses. Anyone who was found without a mask would have been asked to leave the room, as per local media.

However, the Trump children, who had opted for surgical masks, were seen removing their masks as soon as they were seated in the hall. Melania Trump, who matched her mask with her black dress, also left her mask on her seat when she rose to join her husband on the stage after the debate ended. She did, however, take her mask along later. Jill Biden, however, flaunted her mask all through the debate, and also on the stage while she hugged and congratulated her husband for the last presidential debate.

US Election 2020: Melania Trump makes first public appearance since COVID-19 recovery

President Donald Trump's wife Melania canceled a rare joint appearance with him at a campaign rally Tuesday due to a "lingering cough" following her infection with the coronavirus, a spokeswoman said.

"Mrs Trump continues to feel better every day following her recovery from COVID-19, but with a lingering cough, and out of an abundance of caution, she will not be traveling today," Stephanie Grisham said in a statement.

The first lady's appearance with Trump in Erie, Pennsylvania, was to have been her first at a campaign rally in more than a year.

Trump, the first lady and their teenage son Barron all tested positive for Covid-19 earlier this month.

The president was hospitalised for three nights and later said he'd risked death, but now appears to have recovered. The first lady's case was described as having been considerably milder.

However, last week she revealed details of the illness in an unusual statement entitled "My Personal Experience with Covid-19" in which she said the aftermath had been difficult.

"It seemed to be a roller coaster of symptoms in the days after. I experienced body aches, a cough and headaches, and felt extremely tired most of the time," she said.

Melania Trump cancels rare campaign appearance due to 'cough'

The First lady Melania Trump has penned a 'heartfelt' letter on the White House's official website asking the nation and the media to concentrate on more important things rather than books penned on her.

In her second letter ever, she started with talking about how she has recently taken the path of self-reflection. "Over the last couple of weeks, I have had time to reflect on many things personal to me. One of the most honorable and important roles I have ever undertaken has been serving you, the American people, as the First Lady of this country."

Melania Trump pens letter slamming Wolkoff for her 'pettiness' before US election

US President Donald Trump's 14-year-old son Barron contracted coronavirus but has since tested negative, First Lady Melania Trump revealed.

Melania Trump: Son Barron had coronavirus and is now negative

The US Justice Department has accused Melania Trump's former friend turned foe of breaking a nondisclosure agreement between the two friends for her personal benefits.

As per this accusation, Stephanie Winston Wolkoff — who wrote a tell-all book about the first lady — had violated the terms of a nondisclosure agreement, and the department has therefore asked the court to set aside profits from the book in a government trust.

In her book titled, "Melania and Me: The Rise and Fall of My Friendship with the First Lady", Wolkoff has discussed the relationships between the Trump family at lengths. The book has brought out a highly unflattering portrayal of the First Lady.

Also read| In profane rant, Melania Trump takes aim at migrant children and critics

The Justice Department claims that the writer failed to submit the first draft of the book for a review, which is against the agreement.

U.S. Election 2020 New York Direct EP6 | US President & First lady contract Novel Coronavirus

WASHINGTON — The first lady, Melania Trump, delivered a profanity-laced rant about Christmas decorations at the White House and mocked the plight of migrant children who were separated from their parents at the border in 2018 during a conversation secretly taped by a former aide and close confidante.

“I’m working like a — my a** off at Christmas stuff,” Trump laments to the former aide, Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, who has just published a tell-all book, in a recording that was first broadcast on CNN on Thursday night. Trump continued, “You know, who gives a f**k about Christmas stuff and decoration?”

Later in the conversation, which occurred in July 2018, the first lady complained about the criticism leveled at President Donald Trump and his administration that summer for separating families in a crackdown on immigration.

“I say that I’m working on Christmas planning for the Christmas, and they said, ‘Oh, what about the children?’ That they were separated.” She used another obscenity to express her exasperation, asking Winston Wolkoff, “Where they were saying anything when Obama did that?”

The audio recording puts the first lady’s frustrations on full display only weeks before Donald Trump faces voters in his bid for a second term.

In a statement, Stephanie Grisham, the first lady’s chief of staff, accused Winston Wolkoff of seeking to profit by releasing the recordings even as she tries to increase sales of her book, “Melania and Me.”

“Her only intent was to secretly tape the first lady in order to peddle herself and her salacious book,” Grisham said. “There is no way to know if these recordings have been edited, and it’s clear the clips were hand-picked and presented with no context. The first lady remains focused on her family and serving our country.”

As first lady, Trump has been somewhat reclusive, holding few formal dinners or parties at the White House and keeping a mostly low profile. Critics have mocked her “Be Best” program, intended to encourage children to model good behavior, saying that the president hardly abides by that credo.

Winston Wolkoff’s book was published this year after a falling-out between the two women. Winston Wolkoff left the White House in early 2018 after it was revealed that her firm had received $26 million to help plan the president’s inauguration.

The recordings appear to present Trump as irritated that she does not receive the positive news coverage that she believes she deserves, in part because people say she is not speaking out enough about her husband’s actions as president.

“They say I’m complicit. I’m the same like him. I support him. I don’t say enough. I don’t do enough,” she tells Winston Wolkoff in a conversation that sounds as if she is confiding in a close friend.

The conversation took place only weeks after Trump made headlines when she traveled to an immigrant shelter for children in Texas along the Mexican border and wore a jacket that read, in white capital letters, “I really don’t care. Do U?”

At the time, the president and the first lady’s spokeswoman said that the message on the jacket was aimed at reporters, not at the children she was visiting.

Asked by Winston Wolkoff why she wore the jacket, Trump said she did it to annoy her husband’s critics.

“I’m driving liberals crazy, that’s for sure,” she said. “And that, you know, that’s — and they deserve it. And everybody’s like, ‘Oh, my God. this is the worst. This is the worst.’ After, I mean, come on. They are crazy, OK?”

In the recordings, she complains that the news media was not willing to write a positive article about her visit and her efforts to help reunite children with their parents. She says they do not understand the limits of what she can do because reuniting them “needs to go through the process and through the law.”

Of the news media, she says: “They will not do the story. We put it out. They would not do the story. You would not believe it. They would not do the story because they are not — they would not do the story because they are against us because they are liberal media. Yeah, if I go to Fox, they will do the story. I don’t want to go to Fox.”

The recordings also suggest that the president’s view of immigration — and in particular his support for the idea of separating children at the border to deter illegal crossings — influenced the way she saw the issue as well.

In one part of the conversation, according to CNN, Melania Trump questioned whether the mothers and children who claimed to have been subject to violence in their home countries were really lying to Border Patrol officials.

“A lot of, like, moms and kids they are teached how to do it,” Trump said. “They go over and they say like, ‘Oh, we will be killed by a gang member, we will be, you know, it’s so dangerous.’ So they are allowed to stay here.”

She said the families, most of whom come from Central America, could have chosen to stay in Mexico.

New book fuels gossip about Melania Trump's icy relationship with Ivanka

In the United States of America, it was a night like no other as the grand finale of the Republican National Convention was nothing short of a blockbuster.

The spectacle at the White House was unprecedented and unconventional. This four-day event was Trump's biggest opportunity to frame the presidential race on his terms and he may have exceeded the expectations of most people.

The Trump family put up a show that was made for television. It had emotions, fireworks, big promises, some acknowledgements, and in the words of Donald Trump himself, "a lot of greatness".

Big takeaways

First, Trump wanted a big party and he had it — pandemic or no pandemic. The President did not allow the coronavirus to deny him the crowd he craved for. The South Lawn of the White House was packed with over one thousand people. There were no masks or social distancing. America still remains the worst hit country, but the pandemic can wait. It's the land of the free afterall.

Second, Trump used the White House as the backdrop for an overtly political activity. Delivering a convention speech at the President's official address is unconventional, to put it mildly. The Democrats say he broke a few laws by doing so, but the President couldn't care less. He promised a show and he delivered it.

The show-stopper, except for Donald Trump, was his daughter, Ivanka Trump who got a starring role at this convention.

Much like she has throughout the Trump presidency, Ivanka introduced her father before his acceptance speech and she began by acknowledging that her father's style may not be to everyone's liking. "My father has a strong convictions. He knows what he believes and he says what he thinks. Whether you agree with him or not, you always know where he stands. I recognize that my dad's communication style is not to everyone's taste. And I know that his tweets can feel a bit unfiltered. But the results, the results speak for themselves."

Her statement of "the results speak for themselves"was a hint towards her father's apparent foreign policy victories.

"I heard foreign leaders beg him not to move the American embassy to Jerusalem. Yet he delivered on a promise also made and unfulfilled by past presidents because my father knew that it was the right thing to do. Defying all expectations, just weeks ago, he rewrote history again by making a peace agreement in the middle east. The biggest breakthrough in a quarter century," she said.

Finally came the big surprise - an acknowledgement of the coronavirus crisis in America. Much like Melania Trump, Ivanka addressed the invisible enemy America is fighting. "I've been with my father and I've seen the pain in his eyes when he receives updates on the lives that have been stolen by this plague. I have witnessed him make some of the most difficult decisions of his life. I sat with him in the oval office as he stopped travel to europe. I watched him take the strongest, most inclusive economy in a lifetime, the lowest unemployment in a half a century and the highest wage increase for working families in decades and close it down to save American lives. "

After this rather moving speech, the President made a grand entrace to the song "God bless the USA". However, after the grand entry, it was mainly Trump and his teleprompter.

"Thank you very much. Thank you very much. Thank you. Thank you very much. Friends, delegates and distinguished guests, please, I stand before you tonight, honored by your support, proud of the extraordinary progress we have made together over the last four incredible years and brimming with confidence in the bright future we will build for America over the next four years."

Trump proceeded to give a preview of what to expect in the next nine weeks, which was an absolute assault on Joe Biden. Trump said that Biden's agenda was made in China. He called Biden weak and a trojan horse for socialism. Trump thinks Biden is a man who takes his orders from liberal hypocrites who are driving cities to the ground and tearing down the country.

"Joe Biden is weak. He takes his marching orders from liberal hypocrites who drive their cities into the ground while fleeing from the scene of the wreckage to eliminate school choice, while they enroll their children in the finest schools in the land.

"At the democrat national convention, joe biden and his party repeatedly assailed America as a land of racial, economlic and social injustice. So tonight I ask you a simple question. How can the democrat party ask to lead our country when it spends so much time tearing down our country?," he said.

Then the US President concluded with a promise that doesn't get old: Make America strong, proud and great once again.

"Together we are unbeatable because together we are the proud citizens of the United States of America. And on november 3, we will make America safer. We will make America stronger. We will make America prouder. And we will make America greater than ever before. I am very, very proud to be the nominee of the republican party. I love you all. God bless you. And god bless America. Thank you."

This message did not resonate well outside the White House. As Trump delivered his acceptance speech, anti-Trump demonstrators had gathered by the thousands, armed with horns and whistle and Hoping that their cacophony would disrupt the President's speech.

They were successful, as the noise they made was occassionaly audible on the live broadcast. However, it wasn't long before their voice got lost in the sound of fireworks.

While there was nothing new said in the RNC, the claims and promises were wrapped in grand packages, designed to impress his supporters. Donald Trump has managed to blur the lines between political campaigning and the Presidential office.

"Washington has not changed donald trump. Donald trump has changed Washington," Trump claimed.

Unfortunately for team Trump, the moment that has really gone viral from the convention is first lady Melania Trump rolling her eyes at first daughter Ivanka Trump.

Defying all expectations, just weeks ago, he rewrote history again by making a peace agreement in the middle east. The biggest breakthrough in a quarter century," she said. " After this rather moving speech, the President made a grand entrace to the song "God bless the USA". However, after the grand entry, it was mainly Trump and his teleprompter. "Thank you very much. Thank you very much. Thank you. Thank you very much. Friends, delegates and distinguished guests, please, I stand before you tonight, honored by your support, proud of the extraordinary progress we have made together over the last four incredible years and brimming with confidence in the bright future we will build for America over the next four years." Trump proceeded to give a preview of what to expect in the next nine weeks, which was an absolute assault on Joe Biden. Thank you." This message did not resonate well outside the White House.
