Manchester, United Kingdom
Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has confirmed Marcus Rashford’s stand at the club as they prepare for a hectic festive season. Speaking to the press on Christmas Eve, Amorim spoke on Rashford who has been out of favour in recent weeks from United’s first team. According to the United boss, he is desperate to play but things will depend on how the players will train.
<h2>Amorim on Rashford’s situation</h2>
"Yeah, it's my decision," said Amorim. "He wants to play, he's trying, but it's my decision, only my decision.
"I spoke with a lot of players, individually and during training. I'm doing this my way and it's the only way I know. If I don't do that, I lose myself and I don't want to lose myself. I know what I'm doing."
Rashford has been out of favour for United’s last three matches including two high-profile games against Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City. While United were lucky to win the Man City clash after a late Amad Diallo cameo, it was not the case in the Tottenham match where they lost 3-4.

United were again embarrassed on the weekend when they lost 0-3 at Old Trafford which sees them in the bottom half of the Premier League standings. This is the first time since the 1988-89 season that United have been in the bottom half of the table in the Premier League era.
For Rashford, things could go from bad to worse as he fights for his future at the club having fallen down the pecking order. He is expected to leave the Old Trafford outfit, however, that move is likely to materialise in the summer rather than the upcoming winter transfer window which opens on January 1.
The Red Devils take on struggling Wolves on Boxing Day who like United have changed their manager to turn their fortunes.

United Kindom
Ruben Amorim has insisted he knows what he's doing as the Manchester United manager looks to revive the fallen English giants amid a row over the future of Marcus Rashford.
Amorim has had a rollercoaster ride since succeeding the sacked Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.

United enjoyed a late comeback win over local rivals Manchester City only to then slump to a 3-0 loss at home to Bournemouth last weekend following a midweek 4-3 League Cup quarter-final defeat by Tottenham.
Rashford was omitted from all three of those games, with the 27-year-old, a product of the United youth system, now looking increasingly likely to leave Old Trafford.
The struggling England international fuelled speculation about his own future by saying he was "ready for a new challenge" in a midweek interview.
But Amorim, speaking ahead of the Boxing Day match away to Wolves, said nothing had changed from his point of view.
"Normal situation," he said. "When I feel that it's the right moment I will change something. Until then I will continue to think what is the best for the team.
"I speak with him (Rashford) every day. Not about the interview, about the performance."
Amorim added Rashford "wants to play, he is trying" but "it's my decision, only my decision".
"I spoke with a lot of players -- individually, during training -- so I'm trying to do things... I am doing things my way," the Portuguese boss said. "And it's the only way I know.
"If I don't do that I will lose myself and I will not lose myself. I know what I'm doing."
Amorim questioned the "choices" of people surrounding Rashford after omitting him from the Bournemouth match, when Gary Neville said the forward leaving felt like an "inevitable ending".
The former United captain also called it a "distraction for the manager" -- something Amorim denied Tuesday.
"No, I don't think so," he said. "Not for me, not for the other players because everybody is there every day during training, so they understand and that is the key point.
"For the media and for the other people, I cannot control that.
"But I'm really focused and they know, I'm so clear in my message, everybody in Carrington know what I'm talking about and what I want from Marcus and everybody else.
"So, it's not a distraction for us. Maybe it's for the media but that is not my concern."
<h2>'Responsibility'</h2>
Amorim, asked what more he would like to see from Rashford, replied: "Like any other player, the best that they can be.
"If you have big talents, big performance, big responsibility, big engagement, like push forward everybody in this moment. And some guys have a big responsibility here because they are here for a long time."
United are a lowly 13th in the table ahead of Thursday's match against a team managed by Amorim's compatriot Vitor Pereira, who is taking charge of his first match at Molineux fresh from leading Wolves to a 3-0 win at Leicester.
"I understand that it's a tough moment, and it's on me," said Amorim.
"Since the first day that I arrived, it's on me because I'm responsible for the team...We just have to think about improving, to understand the context and not focus on what happened in the past."

'Doing things my way,' says Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim amid Rashford row

Manchester, United Kingdom
Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has questioned Marcus Rashford’s camp after a public comment on his future at the club. Amorim was not happy with the forward’s comments to journalist Henry Winter. Rashford said he was “ready for a new challenge” after being dropped for United’s last two Premier League matches including the Manchester derby last Sunday at the Etihad Stadium.

<h2>Amorim unhappy with Rashford’s camp</h2>
"It is a hard situation," Amorim told Sky Sports on Monday (Dec 23). "I understand that these players have a lot of people around them, making choices that are not the first idea from the player.
"I am always here to help Marcus as another player. I have to do what I have to do. They chose to do the interview as it is not just Marcus. I understand that.
"As a coach, I focus on performance and the way you train. The rest, it is better for me and the club to deal with that when the time comes.”
The Red Devils boss had dropped Rashford in the Manchester derby followed by their visit to Tottenham in the League Cup midweek. Interestingly, he was not even on the bench for any of those matches which was also the case for Sunday’s match at Old Trafford against Bournemouth as they lost 0-3.
Argentine Alejandro Garnacho was also dropped from the squad for the Etihad clash which United won 2-1, but he was instated put into the squad for the Bournemouth clash.

<h2>What is Rashford’s future at the club?</h2>
Rashford is likely to be out of the club with Amorim unlikely to fancy his future at Manchester United, as per reports.
However, he is unlikely to leave the club in the winter transfer window, which opens on January 1.
United will be weighing their options for the summer, with the academy product being given enough chances to either impress the new manager in the rest of the season or find a potential suitor in the summer.
Amorim’s side will head into Christmas sitting in the bottom half of the Premier League table for the first time since the 1988-89 season.
They will face Wolves in their next encounter on Boxing Day, who like United have hired a new manager in Vítor Pereira.

Amorim was not happy with the forward’s comments to journalist Henry Winter. Rashford said he was “ready for a new challenge” after being dropped for United’s last two Premier League matches including the Manchester derby last Sunday at the Etihad Stadium. What does the #PL festive schedule look like? 🎄 Find out below ℹ️#MUFC — Manchester United (@ManUtd) December 23, 2024 × Amorim unhappy with Rashford’s camp "It is a hard situation," Amorim told Sky Sports on Monday (Dec 23). "I understand that these players have a lot of people around them, making choices that are not the first idea from the player. "I am always here to help Marcus as another player. I have to do what I have to do. They chose to do the interview as it is not just Marcus. I understand that. "As a coach, I focus on performance and the way you train. The rest, it is better for me and the club to deal with that when the time comes.” The Red Devils boss had dropped Rashford in the Manchester derby followed by their visit to Tottenham in the League Cup midweek. (Inputs from agencies)

Manchester, UK
Manchester United crashed to a humiliating 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth, while Chelsea missed the chance to go top of the Premier League after a 0-0 draw at Everton on Sunday.
United boss Ruben Amorim, who once again left Marcus Rashford out of his squad, is set for a miserable Christmas following the worst result of his brief reign.
Languishing in 13th place, United have suffered four defeats in nine matches in all competitions since Amorim arrived from Sporting Lisbon in November to replace the sacked Erik ten Hag.
United's second successive loss after their League Cup exit at Tottenham on Thursday underlined Amorim's belief that their road back to the top will be long and arduous.
United, who have conceded first in their last six games, were booed off at half-time, while the final whistle was greeted by more jeers from the few fans who stayed until the bitter end.
While it is far too early to pass judge on Amorim, the Portuguese coach cannot afford many more results like this if he is to keep the players and fans on his side.
Amorim's decision to play without Rashford for the third consecutive game will face fresh scrutiny after United's wretched performance.
Amorim surprisingly omitted the 27-year-old England forward from the squad for United's win at Manchester City last weekend, prompting Rashford to hint he was willing to leave the club for a "new challenge".
Rashford was at Old Trafford wearing a United tracksuit amid his extended exile as Amorim made six changes from the line-up beaten 4-3 by Tottenham in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Again, United were exposed at set-pieces in the 29th minute when Bournemouth's teenage defender Dean Huijsen punished poor marking at a free-kick to glance a header past Andre Onana.
There was even worse to come for Amorim in the second half as Justin Kluivert doubled fifth-placed Bournemouth's advantage with a 61st minute penalty following Noussair Mazraoui's foul on the forward.
Antoine Semenyo compounded United's misery two minutes later with a cool finish from Dango Ouattara's pass.
With leaders Liverpool playing at Tottenham in Sunday's late game, second-placed Chelsea would have gone top, for at least a few hours, if they had won at Everton.
But Enzo Maresca's side had to settle for a goalless stalemate that ended their five-match winning run in the league.
Chelsea sit one point behind Liverpool who have two games in hand on the Blues, starting with their trip to Tottenham.
It was an encouraging start to a new era for Everton -- four points clear of the relegation zone -- under new owners the Friedkin Group, whose purchase brought an end to Farhad Moshiri's tumultuous tenure.
Everton's new executive chairman Marc Watts was in attendance at Goodison Park to see Chelsea come closest to winning when Nicolas Jackson's first-half header hit the post.
Wolves boss Vitor Pereira enjoyed a dream debut as his side won 3-0 at relegation rivals Leicester.
Replacing the sacked Gary O'Neil, former Porto boss Pereira left his role at Saudi Pro League side Al-Shabab to fulfil his dream of managing in England.
Goncalo Guedes started the Pereira era with a flourish as he met Nelson Semedo's cross with an agile finish in the 19th minute.
As if that welcome gift from his fellow Portuguese wasn't enough, Pereira received another present from a compatriot in the 36th minute when Rodrigo Gomes slid in to notch his first goal for Wolves.

Matheus Cunha's 44th minute strike from Guedes' pass ensured third-bottom Wolves would move within two points of fourth-bottom Leicester.
Bottom-of-the-table Southampton held on for a 0-0 draw at Fulham as new manager Ivan Juric watched from the stands.
Juric, axed by Roma in November after just 12 games, was not in charge on Sunday as he awaited a work permit to replace Russell Martin.
Southampton are eight points adrift of safety with only one win from 17 league games.

<h2>Son scores rare olimpico goal</h2>
With the score 3-2 in favour of the home side, Son took a corner at the famous North Stand with the crowd expecting him to deliver a neat ball in the six-yard penalty box. However, spectacularly, the South Korean’s neat delivery landed directly into the net and beat United goalkeeper Altay Bayındır, in the process of completing the Olimpico goal.
The goal is a rare event in football, adding another feather to Son’s impressive hat as he continues to flourish in North London.
Over the years, the Spurs captain has been renowned to score some spectacular goals with one of his goals also winning the Puskas Award for Best Goal of the Year in professional football. In December 2019, Son scored a solo goal while running almost 100 metres from his own penalty area against Burnley which saw him win the Puskas Award.

<h2>Spurs to take on Liverpool in the League Cup semis</h2>
With Spurs already scheduled to face Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday, the two teams have also been paired up for the semis of the League Cup. WATCH: Son Heung-min scores rare OLIMPICO goal in Tottenham's League Cup win over Manchester United

Tottenham survived two calamitous errors from stand-in goalkeeper Fraser Forster on Thursday to beat Manchester United 4-3 and set up a League Cup semi-final against Liverpool, staying on track for their first trophy since 2008.

The home side were cruising at 3-0 in the 54th minute of a captivating tie in London after two goals from Dominic Solanke and one from Dejan Kulusevski.

But Forster's mistakes allowed substitutes Joshua Zirkzee and Amad Diallo to pull the score back to 3-2 with 20 minutes to go.

It was one-way traffic after that, with United totally on top, but Spurs scored a fourth as Son Heung-min found the net from a corner and they held on despite a late Jonny Evans goal.

Tottenham will face Premier League leaders Liverpool in the two-legged semi-finals, with Arsenal taking on Newcastle.

Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou said his injury-hit team inflicted pain on themselves but gave a passionate defence of his gung-ho approach.

"It should have been a lot more comfortable there, but having said that, I still can't get away from the fact that this group of players have done an unbelievable job at the moment to get us through this," he said.

The Australian added: "I know people will say, "Well, don't take any risks' and all that sort of stuff, but we wouldn't be scoring four goals and five goals.

"It's the hardest thing in the game to do, score goals, and we're doing it with bare bones."

Tottenham, 10th in the Premier League, have not won silverware for 16 years, when they lifted the League Cup under Juande Ramos.

But they are now just one stage away from a Wembley final in March, with Postecoglou still on track to deliver on his bold statement that he always wins a trophy in his second season at a club.

New United boss Ruben Amorim is back down to earth with a bump after his side's dramatic 2-1 Premier League win at Manchester City on Sunday.

Amorim made five changes from the team that beat City while Spurs had six academy players on their bench.

Marcus Rashford was left out of United's squad for the second consecutive game but Alejandro Garnacho, also absent on Sunday, was on the bench and came on as a second-half substitute.

<h2>Solanke double</h2>

Tottenham opened the scoring in the 15th minute when Solanke reacted quickest after United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, in for Andre Onana, parried a shot from distance into his path.

Kulusevski doubled Tottenham's lead moments after the restart, finishing unerringly when Lisandro Martinez failed to deal with a James Maddison&nbsp;cut-back, only succeeding in diverting the ball into the Sweden international's path.

Spurs were 3-0 up when Solanke&nbsp;ran onto a long ball over the top, drifting inside Martinez and Evans and finishing with confidence.

But control turned to chaos just after the hour mark following some incredible goalkeeping errors from Forster, deputising for the injured Guglielmo Vicario.

Forster, being closed down by Zirkzee, passed straight to Bruno Fernandes, whose ball found Zirkzee and the Dutchman slotted the ball into an empty net in the 63rd minute.

Minutes later United scored again when Forster dithered after receiving a back pass.

Diallo closed him down in a flash and slid in as Forster tried to clear, with the ball hitting Diallo and ending up in the net.

United had further chances but instead Son gave Tottenham a cushion in the 88th minute.

Even then United had time to find another, with Evans heading in from a corner, but they ran out of time.

"We were not the best team in all of the game, but most of the parts I think we were the best team," said Amorim.

"I think we disconnected for eight minutes. It was really hard to recover from that, but then the lads did a great job."

The home side were cruising at 3-0 in the 54th minute of a captivating tie in London after two goals from Dominic Solanke and one from Dejan Kulusevski.

London, United Kingdom Tottenham survived two calamitous errors from stand-in goalkeeper Fraser Forster on Thursday to beat Manchester United 4-3 and set up a League Cup semi-final against Liverpool, staying on track for their first trophy since 2008. "It's the hardest thing in the game to do, score goals, and we're doing it with bare bones." Tottenham, 10th in the Premier League, have not won silverware for 16 years, when they lifted the League Cup under Juande Ramos. Solanke double Tottenham opened the scoring in the 15th minute when Solanke reacted quickest after United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, in for Andre Onana, parried a shot from distance into his path. Kulusevski doubled Tottenham's lead moments after the restart, finishing unerringly when Lisandro Martinez failed to deal with a James Maddison cut-back, only succeeding in diverting the ball into the Sweden international's path. Spurs were 3-0 up when Solanke ran onto a long ball over the top, drifting inside Martinez and Evans and finishing with confidence.

Old Trafford, UK
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim said he wants to keep Marcus Rashford in his squad after the local hero suggested he could leave Old Trafford for a "new challenge".
The 27-year-old, who was left out of last weekend's derby against Manchester City, came through United's youth ranks and has chalked up 138 goals in 426 appearances for the club since making his debut in 2016.

However, he has struggled for form over the last 18 months, losing his place in England's squad for the Euros in the summer.
Amorim's bold decision to leave out the forward against City was followed by Rashford's interview with British journalist Henry Winter on social media on Tuesday in which the forward revealed he was ready to end his 20-year association with United.
Rashford's comments were put to Amorim at a Wednesday press conference scheduled to preview nominally the club's League Cup quarter-final at Tottenham.
"No (I've not spoken to him)," Amorim said. "Not yet. It was yesterday (when) I gave the day off to the lads, so he's our player and he's ready for the next game."
Asked if he would be happy to retain Rashford in his squad, the recently-arrived Amorim replied: "Of course, because this kind of club needs big talents and he's a big talent.
"So, he just needs to perform at the highest level and that is my focus. I just want to help Marcus."
Amorim added the "new challenge" Rashford spoke of could be found at Old Trafford in trying to revive the fortunes of United, once the dominant force in English football, but now a lowly 13th in the Premier League.
"We have here a new challenge, it's a tough one," he said. "For me, it's the biggest challenge in football because we are in a difficult situation and I already said that this is one of the biggest clubs in the world.
"So, this is a really new challenge and the biggest one. I hope all my players are ready for this new challenge."

Manchester City Manager Pep Guardiola says he's 'not good enough' after a chastening defeat to Manchester United. Is the Spaniard having a meltdown?

Why Does Guardiola Feel He's 'Not Good Enough'?

Manchester United scored two late goals on Sunday to deepen the pain for beleaguered Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola as Chelsea moved just two points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool. Elsewhere on a day of high drama in the English top flight, Wolves manager Gary O'Neil and Southampton boss Russell Martin were both sacked, paying the price for their teams' struggles.

In the marquee game of the day at the Etihad, City defender Josko Gvardiol opened the scoring but Bruno Fernandes levelled from the penalty spot in the 88th minute and Amad Diallo struck two minutes later to seal a 2-1 win. Defending champions City -- who have dominated English football over the past decade -- now have just one win in 11 games in all competitions and Guardiola is desperately searching for answers.

"I don't have a defence, I'm the boss, I'm the manager. I have to find a solution and I don't find a solution," said the Catalan after the low-quality encounter.&nbsp; "This is a big club, when you lose eight out of 11, something wrong is happening. What can I say? The schedule is tough, the injured players? No. "I'm the boss, I'm the manager and I'm not good enough. It's as simple as that."

Guardiola's men trail leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand, by nine points and sit outside the Champions League places, in fifth spot. Injury-ravaged City were far from their best at the Etihad but appeared to be on course for a vital win as the clock ticked down against their neighbours before they self-imploded.

Diallo and the Portuguese midfielder cut out Matheus Nunes' sloppy back pass then chopped down the United winger in his attempt to make amends. Fernandes coolly converted from the penalty spot to equalise. Diallo then raced onto a simple long ball over the top of City's flat-footed defence, finishing neatly to complete a remarkable turnaround.

The win is a huge relief for new United boss Ruben Amorim, who had won just one of his first four Premier League matches. "I think for the fans it has a deep meaning, especially in this context, in this moment," the former Sporting Lisbon boss said after his first experience of a Manchester derby. "We had a difficult moment one week ago against Nottingham (Forest) at home with a storm. It was a really tough moment after the game. Today, we are more happy, but it's three points that we have to continue."

United finished the day 13th in the Premier League table -- where they started -- after Tottenham hammered bottom club Southampton 5-0.

<h2>- Chelsea charge -</h2>

Enzo Maresca's high-flying Chelsea beat Brentford 2-1 at Stamford Bridge to close to within two points of long-time leaders Liverpool, who have 36 points. The home team dominated the first half and got the reward they deserved shortly before the break when Marc Cucurella nodded home Noni Madueke's cross.

Nicolas Jackson&nbsp;doubled Chelsea's lead in the 80th minute and they held out for the win despite a late strike from prolific Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo. It is a fifth straight win for Chelsea, who look increasingly like being Liverpool's main challengers this season, with Arsenal and City faltering.

But Maresca is still being coy over his side's title chances. "It's not about how many games we win," he said. "It's about being realistic. There are things we have to do better. That's why I said for me we are not ready."

Tottenham's romp on the south coast was the latest chapter in a topsy-turvy season for Ange Postecoglou's men, who have now won seven and lost seven of their 16 top-flight matches. James Maddison opened the scoring in 36 seconds and further goals followed for Son Heung-min, Dejan Kulusevski and Pape Sarr in a staggering 25-minute spell.

England midfielder Maddison grabbed a second goal deep into first-half stoppage time to make it 5-0 but there were no additions in the second half.

Shortly after the match Southampton issued a statement saying they had made the "difficult decision to part ways" with Martin with the club rooted to the bottom of the Premier League, nine points from safety.

Wolves, also in the relegation zone, fired O'Neil after a fourth straight defeat. In the early kick-off, Ismaila Sarr scored twice as Crystal Palace moved four points clear of the relegation zone following a 3-1 victory at Brighton.

Nottingham Forest condemned Manchester United to their second straight Premier League defeat on Saturday, beating Ruben Amorim's men 3-2 at Old Trafford.

United forward Rasmus Hojlund cancelled out Nikola Milenkovic's early goal but Morgan Gibbs-White and Chris Wood put the visitors in charge and they kept United at bay after Bruno Fernandes pulled one back.

Forest's first win at Old Trafford since 1994 lifts them to fifth in the Premier League table but United are languishing in 13th spot.

Amorim made a positive start to his career in the United dugout after replacing the sacked Erik ten Hag last month, drawing one and winning two of his first three games.

But he warned the "storm will come" for the struggling club, who have endured a torrid start to the season.

Reality is now starting to bite hard after a 2-0 defeat at Arsenal in midweek followed by Saturday's reverse at home.

"Tough game in a tough moment but we have to continue the job," a disappointed Amorim told the BBC. "This is a long journey. We are improving in some aspects. We have to win games to help us improve the team.

"We are in the start of something so big that we pay attention to every detail. We already know it's a big job so we have to continue."

The former Sporting Lisbon boss will likely be as frustrated with the manner of the goals as the result.

<h2>Set-piece agony</h2>

Corners proved their undoing at Arsenal and Milenkovic headed home from an Elliot Anderson corner in the second minute after beating Lisandro Martinez to the ball.

United rallied and were level in the 18th minute with Hojlund turning home after Alejandro Garnacho's attempt from a Manuel Ugarte ball was smothered by Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels.

The home side failed to build on their goal and Forest's Jota Silva sent a header onto the crossbar after a free-kick was nodded on.

United captain Fernandes went close with a set-piece of his own as the first half wound down, hitting a 25-yard free-kick that Sels brilliantly got a fingertip to before it rattled the crossbar.

But Forest again made a lightning start to the second half.

Fernandes gave the ball away to Callum Hudson-Odoi and he found Gibbs-White, whose 20-yard strike swerved as Andre Onana was all too easily beaten.

New Zealand international Wood met a deep Gibbs-White cross in the 54th minute with a header back across goal that Matthijs de Ligt, Onana and Martinez all failed to deal with as it looped in.

United pulled one back just after the hour mark when Amad Diallo showed good skill and awareness after driving down the right to play back for Fernandes, who swept the ball past Sels from the edge of the box.

The goal injected new belief into the Old Trafford faithful, who roared with encouragement when Diallo went close soon afterwards.

But Forest saw out that surge and largely blunted the hosts. Diogo Dalot saw an effort saved and Diallo was denied by a block.

Substitute Marcus Rashford's volley deflected wide deep in stoppage time, with Martinez sending an acrobatic effort inches over before the final whistle.

Premier League: Manchester United drops points after home loss to Nottingham Forest for first time since 1994

Ruben Amorim has described Manchester United as a ‘massive club but not a massive team’ as the side goes through a period of transition. Speaking on Friday (Dec 6) ahead of Nottingham Forest’s visit to Old Trafford, Amorim said his side is in a difficult position and will need to regroup to win big trophies in the future. United will start the Premier League weekend in 13th place, having only mustered 19 points from 14 matches so far in the season.

<h2>Amorim describes Manchester United’s case</h2>

"We're a massive club but we're not a massive team and we know it so it is no problem to say it," Amorim told a news conference on Friday.

"Our players have to understand that it's a challenging position. We're not one of the best teams in the league and we have to say and think that clearly but our past, our club is maybe the best one in the league.”

In October, the Red Devils sacked FA Cup-winning coach Erik ten Hag after a poor start to the season. He was replaced by Ruud van Nistelrooy on an interim basis before Amorim’s arrival as permanent head coach. The Portuguese gaffer suffered his first defeat of the season on Wednesday after a 2-0 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

It was also his first defeat of the season as manager, having gone unbeaten during his spell at Sporting Lisbon.

With Forest enjoying a stellar 2024-25 season, Saturday's late kick-off won’t be an easy ride for the Old Trafford outfit. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side is on 22 points in the seventh place, but a win for United will see them go level on points with the former European champions. Speaking on Friday (Dec 6) ahead of Nottingham Forest’s visit to Old Trafford, Amorim said his side is in a difficult position and will need to regroup to win big trophies in the future.

Amorim describes Manchester United’s case "We're a massive club but we're not a massive team and we know it so it is no problem to say it," Amorim told a news conference on Friday. "Our players have to understand that it's a challenging position. We're not one of the best teams in the league and we have to say and think that clearly but our past, our club is maybe the best one in the league.” ALSO READ | Lionel Messi named MLS Most Valuable Player after record-setting season In October, the Red Devils sacked FA Cup-winning coach Erik ten Hag after a poor start to the season. Premier League: Liverpool held in Newcastle thriller, Arsenal inflict first defeat on Ruben Amorim's team

Manchester United scrapped a plan to wear a rainbow jacket during their warm-up for the clash against Everton on Sunday. Reports in the UK suggest that Noussair Mazraoui refused to wear the jacket. Wion's Esha Hanspal gets you the details.

Manchester United marked Ruben Amorim's first game at Old Trafford with a 3-2 Europa League victory over Bodo/Glimt as Rasmus Hojlund netted a double, while Tottenham were held by Roma on Thursday. United trailed late in the first half against Norwegians Bodo/Glimt, but recovered to post a second straight Europa League win since sacking Erik ten Hag, having started the campaign with three consecutive draws.

"Half of the stadium doesn't know me, I came from Portugal and I did nothing for this club. Yet the way they make me feel at home is special," Amorim told TNT Sports. Manchester United scored in the second minute of former Sporting Lisbon boss Amorim's first match as manager at Ipswich on Sunday and it took under 60 seconds for them to break the deadlock against Bodo/Glimt.

Visiting goalkeeper Nikita Haikin was put under pressure by a poor back-pass and his clearance was blocked by Hojlund, allowing Alejandro Garnacho to tap into an empty net. But United's defensive frailties were laid bare as Hakon Evjen swept in a 19th-minute equaliser and Philip Zinckernagel put Bodo/Glimt in front four minutes later.

United looked short of ideas until the stroke of half-time when Noussair Mazraoui's cross found Hojlund, who flicked the ball up with a clever touch and calmly volleyed into the bottom corner.

The hosts reclaimed the lead less than five minutes after the restart, as Manuel Ugarte squared the ball across the face of goal for Hojlund to prod home.

United survived a real scare when the referee waved play on after goalkeeper Andre Onana handled outside his area in the second half. But Amorim's men held on to give their new boss a satisfactory home debut.

In London, Spurs failed to back up their stunning weekend win over Manchester City as Mats Hummels scored in injury time to snatch a 2-2 draw for Roma.

Tottenham also made a fast start as Son Heung-min slotted in a penalty in the fifth minute after Pape Matar Sarr was brought down by Hummels.

Evan Ndicka flicked in Paulo Dybala's free-kick to level for Roma a quarter of an hour later, before Brennan Johnson restored Spurs' advantage 11 minutes before the break.

Crisis-hit Roma piled the pressure on late at the Tottenham Stadium and former Germany centre-back Hummels pounced from close range in added time.

Ange Postecoglou's Spurs now sit outside the top eight, who qualify automatically for the last 16, on goal difference.

"We should have shown a bit more composure," said Postecoglou. "We had a couple of chances cleared off the line. We sort of kept them in the game."

<h2>- Bilbao, Eintracht join Lazio at top -</h2>

Earlier, Athletic Bilbao cruised to a 3-0 win over Elfsborg to move behind Lazio on goal difference at the top of the table. The Roman club were held to a goalless draw by Ludogorets but remain unbeaten with 13 points from five games.

Eintracht Frankfurt, also flying high in the Bundesliga, have the same number of points after Omar Marmoush netted a spot-kick in a 2-1 victory over Midtjylland in Denmark.

Victor Osimhen scored his seventh goal in as many matches for Galatasaray in all competitions, but the Turkish giants slipped two points behind the leading trio after a 1-1 draw at AZ Alkmaar.

Lyon climbed into seventh courtesy of a 4-1 thrashing of Qarabag in Baku, with Georgia striker Georges Mikautadze netting an excellent double.

The Ligue 1 club sit above eighth-placed Rangers on goal difference after the Scottish giants, struggling domestically, thumped Nice 4-1 on the French Riviera.

<h2>- Chelsea march on -</h2>

Chelsea remained top of the Conference League table with a fourth straight win by beating Heidenheim, who lost their 100-percent record, 2-0. A much-changed Chelsea had to wait until six minutes after the restart to break the deadlock as Christopher Nkunku took a brilliant touch to control Jadon Sancho's cross before firing into the top corner.

The German side improved after falling behind, though, and almost equalised in the 69th minute when Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen produced a wonderful double save to deny Paul Wanner and Leo Scienza.

The two-time European champions killed the game off with four minutes left as Sancho notched his second assist of the match, teeing up Mykhailo Mudryk to drive a shot into the roof of the net after playing a one-two with Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

Man United's Rasmus Hojlund gives Ruben Amorim winning Old Trafford bow, Roma hold Tottenham 2-2

Manchester United suffered a £14 million ($17.6 million) drop in total revenue to £143.1 million, taking a hit from their absence from the lucrative Champions League, first-quarter results showed Tuesday.

But the club announced a net profit of £1.4 million in the period from July to September, compared with a £25.8 million loss during the same period last year, which they attributed to favourable foreign exchange rates.

The Red Devils finished eighth in the Premier League under former manager Erik ten Hag last season -- their lowest-ever placing -- to miss out on Europe's top club competition.

That resulted in a 20.4 per cent drop in broadcasting revenue in the quarter ending September 30 to £31.3 million.

United's FA Cup win last season means they are competing in this season's Europa League instead.

Commercial revenue fell 5.6 per cent to £85.3 million, with matchday revenue decreasing by 3.3 per cent to £26.5 million.

The club recorded "exceptional" costs of £8.6 million. They said the figure "comprises costs incurred in relation to the restructuring of the group's operations, including the redundancy scheme implemented in the first quarter of financial year 2025".

British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe's INEOS group took over football operations earlier this year after purchasing a minority stake.

They instigated a number of cost-saving measures, including plans to cut about 250 jobs.

United chief executive Omar Berrada said cost and headcount reductions remained "on track", as did work to renovate the club's Carrington training ground.

He confirmed a taskforce weighing up the benefits of redeveloping Old Trafford or building a new stadium on adjacent land was continuing its work.

United ended their financial year in June with net losses of £113.2 million despite earning record revenues -- their fifth straight year of losses.

They are predicting total revenue for 2025 of between £650 million and £670 million.

Ruben Amorim, who replaced the sacked Ten Hag earlier this month, took charge of his first game at Ipswich on Sunday, which ended 1-1.

Manchester United revenue takes a dip amid Champions League absence

Ruben Amorim believes he is "where I am supposed to be" after his first week as Manchester United's new manager.

The Portuguese boss, who replaced the sacked Erik ten Hag, arrived at the club's Carrington training complex on Monday following a 4-2 win in his final match in charge of Sporting Lisbon.

On Friday, United released a short clip from Amorim's first interview with the club's in-house TV channel showing him looking around a floodlit Old Trafford.

"You watch on TV and you know that it's big and it's impressive, but when you are here you can feel it and I think you feel the history," Amorim said.

"I'm really, really proud to be a Manchester United coach, so it's amazing. It's a real honour to be here."

Told by the interviewer that there is a "weight to the place but it does lift you up", Amorim added: "That's really funny because I feel very relaxed.

"Maybe because it's not gameday. When we have a game I'm a different guy but I really don't feel the weight.

"I'm really excited and I'm quite relaxed you know. I think I am where I am supposed to be. That's the feeling."

Amorim's first match in charge will be away at struggling Ipswich on November 24, following the international break.

United are 13th in the Premier League table after a poor start to the season but are only four points off the top four.

Premier League: Ruben Amorim says Man Utd is 'where I'm supposed to be'

Bruno Fernandes hopes new manager Ruben Amorim can "change the energy" at struggling Manchester United after the Portuguese coach checked in at the Premier League club.

Amorim arrived at the Carrington training complex on Monday for meetings but cannot begin coaching until his work visa is confirmed.

The 39-year-old, who replaced the sacked Erik ten Hag, guided Sporting Lisbon to two titles in four seasons and left them with 11 wins in 11 league matches this season.

"Sometimes a person can change the energy of a space, if it's the right moment," Fernandes, who left Sporting for United just before Amorim took over, told MUTV.

"We hope that he can come and this is the right moment for him to come and bring his energy, bring his qualities and his knowledge of football, because he's done something really, really special at Sporting.

"If someone doubts that, it's about just looking at the past. Sporting was to be about 20 years without winning the league and he got back to win the league, and he won it two times in four years with a really youthful team, in a moment of change."

Captain Fernandes said managing United, who have not won the Premier League since 2013, would be a different challenge from the Sporting job.

"Obviously you can't bring or transform what he has done at Sporting into here, because you have different players, you have different ways of play and everything," he said.

"I'm pretty sure that the idea of football he has, independent of the way he wants to play, is going to be a good one and it's going to bring us success."

Amorim is United's sixth permanent managerial appointment since the end of Alex Ferguson's trophy-filled 27-year reign in 2013.

United are 13th in the Premier League table after a poor start to the season but are only four points off the top four.

Amorim's first match in charge will be away at struggling Ipswich on November 24, following the current international break.

Bruno Fernandes hopes for 'change in energy' as Ruben Amorim takes charge of Manchester United

Ruud van Nistelrooy has left Manchester United following the arrival of new manager Ruben Amorim, the club announced on Monday. The Dutchman, a former star striker at the club, was put in temporary charge after the sacking of Erik ten Hag late last month.

Van Nistelrooy ended his four-match spell in charge unbeaten with a 3-0 victory against Leicester on Sunday.

The former PSV Eindhoven boss, appointed as an assistant coach in July, had said he wanted to stay at Old Trafford to work with Amorim, who arrived at the club's Carrington training complex on Monday afternoon.

But United issued a brief statement on Twitter confirming Van Nistelrooy, 48, would not be part of the new coaching set-up.

"Ruud van Nistelrooy and three first-team coaches have departed the club with our best wishes for the future," it said. "Thank you for your unwavering commitment to United."

Ruud van Nistelrooy leaves Manchester United after Ruben Amorim joins as new manager

Victor Osimhen scored twice as Galatasaray inflicted a first Europa League defeat of the season on Tottenham with a 3-2 victory in Istanbul on Thursday, while Manchester United got their first win on the board by beating PAOK Thessaloniki.

The Turkish champions have 10 points from four games and have all but secured qualification for at least the knock-out play-off round, while Spurs sit in seventh place after losing their 100-percent record.

"We expected it to be a difficult match. We encountered a team as we expected. They have dangerous players," said Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou.

"We lost because we could not show what we wanted in the first half. Both teams are doing well in Europe."

Galatasaray took an early lead when Yunus Akgun smashed a sensational long-range volley into the top corner in the sixth minute.

But the visitors hit back just 12 minutes later as teenage striker Will Lankshear marked just his second first-team appearance with a goal by tapping in Brennan Johnson's pass across the six-yard box.

Galatasaray took control before half-time, though, as Osimhen scored twice in the space of eight minutes.

The Nigerian star fired them back in front just after the half-hour mark, before cleverly volleying Dries Mertens' cross past Tottenham goalkeeper Fraser Forster.

Osimhen has now scored six goals in eight appearances for Galatasaray since joining on loan from Napoli.

The home side passed up several opportunities to put the game out of sight for their opponents, but Spurs' hopes of a comeback were hit when Lankshear was sent off for two yellow-card offences in quick succession in the second half.

Dominic Solanke pulled one back in the 69th minute, shortly after being brought on by Postecoglou, but Galatasaray held on with relative comfort.

<h2>United finally win in Europe</h2>

Amad Diallo, often overlooked by former boss Erik ten Hag, scored twice as Man United beat PAOK 2-0 at Old Trafford in their first Europa League game since sacking the Dutchman.

The Ivorian winger put United ahead early in the second half with a header across goal that bounced in at the far post.

Diallo secured the hosts a much-needed three points, after three previous draws, with 13 minutes remaining with a wonderful individual effort.

"He (Diallo) has been incredible in training, he always trains well and is asking me to do more," interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy told TNT Sports.

Van Nistelrooy's next and final game in charge will be the Premier League visit of Leicester this weekend, before Ruben Amorim takes over after the international break.

"Sunday is another one and I'm so focused on doing that so I'm not thinking of what is next."

Lazio are the only team with four wins from four games after Pedro scored an injury-time winner in a 2-1 success against Porto.

Alessio Romagnoli gave the Romans the lead on the stroke of half-time, before Stephen Eustaquio levelled for Porto.

Ajax sit in second place, two points behind Lazio, after romping to a 5-0 thrashing of Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Omar Marmoush's 13th goal of the season clinched Eintracht Frankfurt, who are fourth behind Galatasaray on goals scored, a 1-0 win against Slavia Prague.

The Egyptian clipped a superb free-kick in off the crossbar shortly after the break.

Athletic Bilbao came from behind to grab a 2-1 success at Ludogorets.

Inaki Williams and Nico Serrano both scored in a two-minute burst from the Basque club.

Roma's disappointing form this season continued as Kevin Mac Allister's goal 13 minutes from time secured Union Saint-Gilloise their second point of the competition with a 1-1 draw in Belgium.

Elsewhere, Rangers held Olympiakos to a 1-1 stalemate in Greece, while Hoffenheim and Lyon both scored deep into added time in a dramatic 2-2 draw.

In the Conference League, a much-changed Chelsea romped to an 8-0 thrashing of Armenians Noah at Stamford Bridge.

Joao Felix and Christopher Nkunku both netted doubles for the Blues, with Mykhailo Mudryk, Axel Disasi, Marc Guiu and Tosin Adarabioyo all also on the scoresheet.

Europa League: Galatasaray down Spurs, Man United end wait for win

Moises Caicedo's strike denied Manchester United victory in their first Premier League game since sacking Erik ten Hag as Chelsea claimed a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford on Sunday. Interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy, who will be replaced by Ruben Amorim later his month, sprinted down the touchline in celebration after Bruno Fernandes put United in front from the penalty spot 20 minutes from time.

Caicedo quickly replied for the Blues, who edge above Arsenal on goal difference into fourth place in the table. A point leaves United still down in 13th, six points off the top four.

The Red Devils' return of just 12 points from 10 games is United's worst start to a league campaign since 1986/87.

Amorim was not in attendance as he prepares to take charge of Sporting Lisbon for the one of the final times against Manchester City in the Champions League on Tuesday. United were far more competitive than in 3-0 demolitions by Liverpool and Tottenham at home this season, but showed many of the same flaws that cost Ten Hag his job.

Van Nistelrooy enjoyed a 5-2 demolition of an under-strength Leicester in his first match in charge to reach the League Cup quarter-finals in midweek. Still a hero among the United fans from his days as a prolific striker, the Dutchman's name was chanted in a buoyant pre-match atmosphere.

However, a Chelsea side that have lost once in nine Premier League games, provided a much stiffer test for a United side still short on confidence. Both sides hit the woodwork in a disappointing first 45 minutes as Noni Madueke hit the post from a corner before Marcus Rashford clipped the bar with a cushioned volley in the last action of the half.

Pedro Neto's burst of pace nearly gave Chelsea a dream start to the second period but the Portuguese winger's shot flew just past the far post. However, the Blues remain overly reliant on Cole Palmer for inspiration.

The boyhood United fan, who began his career at Manchester City before joining Chelsea last year, was kept quiet by Van Nistelrooy's pairing of Casemiro alongside Manuel Ugarte in midfield.

<h2>- 'Results will come' -</h2>

Before kick-off only Southampton had scored fewer than United's eight Premier League goals in nine games this season. The lack of efficiency in front of goal that Ten Hag often bemoaned was in evidence again.

"Over the last games we played we lost some points where we didn't convert our chances," said Van Nistelrooy, who is set to take charge of two more games. "When you create a lot, all through the season so far, I'm not too worried the players will get in a flow with results and confidence growing. Results will come."

Alejandro Garnacho wasted a glorious chance to open the scoring from Fernandes' cut-back with a tame effort that looped into the arms of Robert Sanchez.

United were gifted the chance to break the deadlock when Sanchez clipped Rasmus Hojlund inside the box. Fernandes kept his cool to send the Spanish international goalkeeper the wrong way and spark wild celebrations from Van Nistelrooy.

United's joy was short-lived as Chelsea hit back within four minutes. A corner was only cleared to the edge of the box, where Caicedo connected a sweet strike to fire into the bottom corner.

Caicedo cost a British transfer record £115 million ($149 million) when he joined Chelsea just over a year ago and is beginning to deliver on that investment after a difficult first season.

"Since we arrived Moi is doing fantastic," said Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca. "The problem with Moi is because the club paid big money, people expect them to be the best. It is normal to be a bit up and down. We are trying to improve him and he is showing how good he is."

Chelsea should have struck again moments later when substitute Enzo Fernandez spooned over with Andre Onana stranded. But it was United who came closest in a frantic finale when Garnacho's acrobatic effort flew just over.

Solanke produced a delicate dinked finish to put Spurs ahead in the 75th minute and scored another from close range before James Maddison added gloss with a sumptious free kick deep into stoppage time.

The result lifts Ange Postecoglou's men to seventh in the table on 16 points -- two behind Villa, who missed the chance to climb into third spot.

The Spurs boss, whose side lost 1-0 to Crystal Palace last week, said his men had shown they had "other gears" in the second half, praising Solanke for his performance. "His goals are unbelievable but his general play, his work-rate, I can't speak highly enough of him," he told Sky Sports.

Manchester United off to worst Premier League start following 1-1 draw vs Chelsea

Ruben Amorim was Friday named as the new manager of Manchester United, replacing the sacked Erik ten Hag. The 39-year-old Portuguese coach, who won two Primeira Liga titles with Sporting Lisbon, has signed a deal until 2027 and will join the club on November 11.

"Manchester United is delighted to announce the appointment of Ruben Amorim as head coach of the men's first team, subject to work visa requirements," the club said on its website. "He will join until June 2027 with a club option of an additional year, once he has fulfilled his obligations to his current club."

United described Amorim as "one of the most exciting and highly rated young coaches in European football".

"Highly decorated as both a player and coach, his titles include winning the Primeira Liga twice in Portugal with Sporting CP -- the first of which was the club's first title in 19 years," the club statement said.

Ruud van Nistelrooy will continue to take charge of the team until Amorim arrives at Old Trafford during the November international break.

His first game in charge will be away at struggling Ipswich on November 24.

United sacked Ten Hag on Monday after a 2-1 defeat by West Ham left them languishing 14th in the Premier League, with just three wins from nine matches.

<h2>Top target</h2>

Amorim quickly emerged as the club's top target and Sporting issued a statement to the Lisbon stock exchange earlier this week confirming United were willing to meet his release clause of 10 million euros ($11 million).

Amorim was peppered with questions about his prospective switch at his press conference ahead of Sporting's home league game against Estrela on Friday but he remained tight-lipped.

"It is a negotiation between two clubs," he said on Thursday. "It's never easy. Even with the clauses it's never easy, they have to talk."

Prior to Wednesday's 5-2 win against Leicester in the fourth round of the League Cup, United had won just one of their past eight games in all competitions.

Ten Hag won the League Cup and FA Cup during his spell at Old Trafford but the club have not won the Premier League since 2013, in Alex Ferguson's last season in charge.

Ferguson won the Premier League title 13 times but since his departure five permanent managers have come and gone without adding to the club's 20 top-flight titles.

Van Nistelrooy said Thursday he was "motivated" to help turn United's season around and wants to stay at the club as he prepares the players for a high-profile match against Chelsea on Sunday.

Asked if it is his expectation that he will remain as an assistant under the new United boss Van Nistelrooy, a former PSV Eindhoven manager, said: "We will see but it's a contract situation that I'm in, and my desire to help the club go forward.

"So, I can speak to you about my side of this story, and after that, when the new situation is occurring, when the new manager is signing and conversations take place, we have to see how things develop."

"He will join until June 2027 with a club option of an additional year, once he has fulfilled his obligations to his current club." United described Amorim as "one of the most exciting and highly rated young coaches in European football". Top target Amorim quickly emerged as the club's top target and Sporting issued a statement to the Lisbon stock exchange earlier this week confirming United were willing to meet his release clause of 10 million euros ($11 million). Amorim was peppered with questions about his prospective switch at his press conference ahead of Sporting's home league game against Estrela on Friday but he remained tight-lipped. "It is a negotiation between two clubs," he said on Thursday. "It's never easy. Even with the clauses it's never easy, they have to talk." Ruben Amorim replaces Erik Ten Hag as Manchester United’s new manager

Ruud van Nistelrooy enjoyed a winning start as interim Manchester United manager by beating Leicester 5-2 to reach the League Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday as Manchester City crashed out 2-1 to Tottenham.

Arsenal and Liverpool were among the other sides to book their place in the last eight, but Chelsea were beaten 2-0 at Newcastle.

A United legend as a player, Van Nistelrooy was thrust into the role of caretaker boss after the Red Devils sacked Erik ten Hag on Monday following a dreadful start to the season.

Sporting Lisbon coach Ruben Amorim is the man the English giants have targeted to take over but are still in negotiations with the Portuguese champions to agree compensation for the 39-year-old.

According to reports in Portugal, Amorim will remain at Sporting for the next three matches before completing his move during the November international break.

"I came here as an assistant to help the club. I'm helping as long as I'm needed and in the future, in any capacity, I'm here to help the club build towards the future," said Van Nistelrooy. "The reaction of the players was excellent. They deserve the credit for a good win and I'm happy the crowd goes home with a nice night of football."

The Dutchman said before the game that United "can be unstoppable" when "players, staff and supporters pull together" and they cut loose by scoring four times in a thrilling first 45 minutes.

Casemiro's stunning effort into the top corner opened the scoring before Alejandro Garnacho swept home Diogo Dalot's cross to please a jubilant Van Nistelrooy on the touchline.

Bilal El Khannouss quickly pulled a goal back for the much-changed Foxes.

Bruno Fernandes' deflected free-kick restored United's two-goal cushion before Casemiro slammed home his third goal in two games.

Conor Coady grabbed another consolation for Leicester but United were not to be denied just a second win in nine games.

Fernandes rounded off the scoring when he pounced on a short back-pass to round Danny Ward and fire home.

United's reward is a trip to Tottenham in the last eight after they eliminated a City side without Erling Haaland.

Timo Werner slotted home his first goal since March from Dejan Kulusevski's inviting cross to open the scoring.

Pape Sarr's long-range strike doubled Spurs' lead before Matheus Nunes got an injury-hit City back into the tie in first-half stoppage time.

But they could not find an equaliser and Pep Guardiola showed where his priorities lie as Haaland remained on the bench for the full 90 minutes.
