The United board wants their latest target to join as early as this weekend when the Red Devils face Chelsea in the Premier League. A reported sum of $10mn could be paid in compensation to acquire the services of Amorim, whom the Premier League side looks to put behind a poor start to the season.

Ruben Amorim confirms Manchester United approach but says 'nothing decided yet'

It was the end of the Erik ten Hag managerial era at Manchester United on Monday (Oct 28) after the Dutch manager was sacked by the club owing to a poor start to the season. With 11 points from nine matches, Sunday’s defeat to West Ham United was the final nail in the coffin for Ten Hag as attention now turns to the next manager. While Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge temporarily, it is Sporting Lisbon manager Rúben Amorim who leads the race to be the next permanent man in charge of the side.

"Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men's first-team manager," said a club statement.

"Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024."

"We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future."

"Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, whilst a permanent head coach is recruited."

Ten Hag's job was under scrutiny since last season but a win in FA Cup last season kept him in his post. The ongoing season, however, turned out to be the worst start for the United ever since 1989/90 even before the West Ham loss on Sunday.

The 54-year-old Ten Hag's position had been repeatedly called into question in recent week after United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe kept him on board at Old Trafford following the club's FA Cup final win over Manchester City at Wembley in May.

Premier League: Manchester United sack Erik ten Hag as manager following dismal start of season

West Ham piled more pressure on beleaguered Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag with a dramatic 2-1 win on Sunday as Cole Palmer inspired Chelsea to a victory by the same scoreline over Newcastle.

Tottenham were beaten 1-0 at Crystal Palace, who picked up their first win of the season.

Liverpool can go back to the top of the table with victory away at Arsenal in the biggest clash of the Premier League weekend later on Sunday.

Ten Hag was left to rue a familiar lack of ruthlessness as United's fourth league defeat in nine games will spark further speculation on how long he will be given to turn the Red Devils' fortunes around.

The visitors should have been out of sight by half-time at the London Stadium.

Alejandro Garnacho hit the woodwork inside two minutes and Edson Alvarez also headed off his own crossbar.

But it was Diogo Dalot who missed the biggest chance when the Portuguese international somehow fired over with the goal gaping after rounding Lukasz Fabianski.

Under-fire West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui showed his disgust with the Hammers' first-half display by making three substitutions at the break.

Crysencio Summerville was one of those introduced and he slid in to open the scoring against the run of play on 74 minutes.

Casemiro brought United level nine minutes from time with a header from point-blank range.

But there was late drama when VAR intervened for a foul on Danny Ings by Matthijs de Ligt.

Jarrod Bowen smashed in the resulting spot-kick to take West Ham above United, who sink to 14th in the table.&nbsp;

Chelsea had been beaten in the Premier League for the first time since Enzo Maresca's first match in charge at Liverpool last weekend despite an impressive performance.

The Blues got back to winning ways with Palmer at the heart of their best work.

The England international had a goal marginally ruled out for offside inside the first five minutes.

Palmer was the creator for the opening goal, despite not being credited with the assist, as his sumptuous ball over the top freed Pedro Neto, who picked out Nicolas Jackson to slot in his sixth goal of the season.

Newcastle are now winless in five league games as the pressure mounts on Eddie Howe ahead of a rematch against Chelsea in the League Cup on Wednesday.

The Magpies did get back on level terms before half-time as Alexander Isak tapped in Lewis Hall's cross at the end of a well-worked move.

Palmer took just two minutes into the second period to make the decisive impact with a driving run forward and powerful finish that beat Nick Pope at his near post.

Newcastle should have left London with a point, though, as Isak botched a huge chance to level 15 minutes from time after rounding Robert Sanchez.

Palace began the day in the relegation zone but were good value for the three points at Selhurst Park as Tottenham's struggles on the road continue.

Eberechi Eze's deft flick teed up Jean-Philippe Mateta to fire home the only goal.

Eze had a second ruled out for offside in the second half, but Tottenham, without injured captain Son Heung-min, were toothless in attack.

Spurs have won just once in five away league games this season as they slip to eighth, four points off the top four.

Manchester City enter record books with 5-0 mauling of Sparta Prague in Champions League

Manchester United eased the pressure on beleaguered boss Erik ten Hag as they fought back to beat Brentford 2-1, while Tottenham got back on track with a 4-1 rout of West Ham on Saturday.

Ten Hag had defiantly slammed "fairy tales and lies" about his United future on Friday as the Dutchman insisted he was not in danger of the sack.

But the 54-year-old is widely believed to be fighting to save his job after presiding over United's worst start to a top-flight season since 1989-90.

Ten Hag was surely teetering on the brink of being dismissed after Brentford pounced to take the lead in first-half stoppage time when&nbsp;Ethan Pinnock&nbsp;met a corner with a powerful header.

The goal sparked a furious reaction from Ten Hag, who was booked for protesting about Matthijs de Ligt's enforced absence to have treatment on a bloodied head wound.

But Alejandro Garnacho started United's revival in the 47th minute as the Argentinian met Marcus Rashford's angled pass with a superb volley into the top corner.

And Rasmus Hojlund bagged the decisive second goal in the 62nd minute, taking Bruno Fernandes' clever flick and clipping a composed finish over Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken.

United's first win in six games in all competitions was only their third victory in eight Premier League matches this term.

They sit 10th in the table ahead of an intriguing week, featuring a Europa League trip to Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce and a visit to West Ham.

Tottenham scored three goals in eight second-half minutes against the Hammers to ease the pain of their recent collapse in a 3-2 loss at Brighton.&nbsp;

Mohammed Kudus' opener for West Ham was cancelled out before the break by Dejan Kulusevski.

Tottenham ran riot after the interval thanks to Yves Bissouma's strike, an own goal from West Ham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola and a fourth from Son Heung-min.

It was a third win in four league games for Ange Postecoglou's men, heaping pressure on new West Ham coach Julen Lopetegui after his side's spluttering start to the season.

"Second half was outstanding from the lads -- good energy, good goals, good football," Postecoglou said.

<h2>Leicester's great escape</h2>

Brighton moved up to fifth place with a 1-0 victory at Newcastle on a day of mixed emotions for Danny Welbeck, who scored the 35th-minute winner but was later stretchered off with a back injury that left him needing an oxygen mask.

Leicester staged a stirring fightback to snatch a dramatic 3-2 victory at winless Southampton.

Cameron Archer struck in the eighth minute before Joe Aribo's 28th-minute goal increased the lead for the bottom-of-the-table hosts.

But Leicester's Facundo Buonanotte bundled home in the 64th minute before Ryan Fraser was sent off for conceding a penalty with a foul on Jamie Vardy.

Vardy stroked in the 74th-minute leveller from the spot and Jordan Ayew drilled into the bottom corner in the eighth minute of stoppage-time.

Fourth-placed Aston Villa extended their unbeaten run to nine matches in all competitions with a 3-1 win at Fulham.

Raul Jimenez netted in the fifth minute, but Villa's Morgan Rogers equalised four minutes later.

Andreas Pereira had a penalty saved by Villa 'keeper Emiliano Martinez before the interval.

Ollie Watkins' 59th-minute header completed the comeback and Fulham's Joachim Andersen was sent off for a professional foul on the Villa striker five minutes later.

Issa Diop's 69th-minute own-goal sealed the win, although Villa had Jaden Philogene sent off for two yellow cards in three minutes.

Everton clinched their first away win in 16 games in all competitions with a 2-0 victory against Ipswich.

Iliman Ndiaye&nbsp;fired into the top corner in the 17th minute and Michael Keane doubled Everton's lead in the 40th minute to leave fourth-bottom Ipswich without a win in eight league games.

Third-placed Arsenal will go top of the table if they win at Bournemouth in Saturday's final match.

On Sunday, Liverpool, currently in pole position, host sixth-placed Chelsea, while champions Manchester City travel to Wolves.

But the 54-year-old is widely believed to be fighting to save his job after presiding over United's worst start to a top-flight season since 1989-90. Ten Hag was surely teetering on the brink of being dismissed after Brentford pounced to take the lead in first-half stoppage time when Ethan Pinnock met a corner with a powerful header. Tottenham scored three goals in eight second-half minutes against the Hammers to ease the pain of their recent collapse in a 3-2 loss at Brighton. Iliman Ndiaye fired into the top corner in the 17th minute and Michael Keane doubled Everton's lead in the 40th minute to leave fourth-bottom Ipswich without a win in eight league games. Third-placed Arsenal will go top of the table if they win at Bournemouth in Saturday's final match. On Sunday, Liverpool, currently in pole position, host sixth-placed Chelsea, while champions Manchester City travel to Wolves. Premier League: Manchester United ease pressure on Erik ten Hag, Spurs run riot in West Ham win

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has slammed English media ahead of this week’s Premier League clash against Brentford on Saturday (Oct 19). Ten Hag slammed English media for "fairy tales and lies" as he continues to remain under pressure due to a poor start to the Premier League season. Manchester United have made the worst start to a league season in 35 years as they struggle to keep pace with the big sides in the Premier League.

<h2>Ten Hag slams English media</h2>

"Noise is only coming from some of you in the media, creating stories and fairy tales, and bringing lies," Ten Hag told reporters on Friday.

"I told this before the break. Several journalists probably didn't believe me because I see the reports.

"But internal in the club it's quiet. Of course, we are discussing, that we are unhappy with the position where we are and how we have to turn the corner, what has to happen, so what should be strategy to turn this corner."

Manchester United have made the worst start to a league season for 35 years, with just eight points from a possible 21. They lost heavily to Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur on home turf while also being on the losing side in the away game against Brighton. Their Europa League journey has also not gone according to plan with draws against Twente and Porto. Pressure is slowly mounting on the Dutch manager Erik ten Hag, who insists he has still got the backing of club management.

United are back in action over the weekend as they face Brentford at Old Trafford on Saturday. A win will be a minimum requirement for the hosts as they look to change their fortunes ahead of a crucial run in domestic and European matches.

Former Manchester United player and Inter Miami owner David Beckham has called for patience as the club goes through a phase of changes. Speaking on Friday (Oct 17), Beckham urged Manchester United fans to give time to new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe after he has taken control of the team’s sporting side. According to Beckham, fans must believe in the process despite the club’s poor form on the field as they struggle to keep pace with other big teams.

“I think that it definitely needed change. I think, as speaking as a United fan, I think that many people had said that, the club needed change and it needed a fresh perspective in how this club needs to be run and the decisions that are made,” Beckham said while speaking on Rio Ferdinand’s podcast.

“I really like Jim, you know, I've met him a few times over the years with a few mutual friends and, you know, I think that he's a fan and obviously he's a great businessman as well, one of the best and one of the biggest,” the former player added.

David Beckham urges Manchester United fans to be patient, backs Jim Ratcliffe to lead changes at club

Alex Ferguson is leaving his reported £2 million-a-year ($2.6m) ambassador role with Manchester United at the end of the season as part of a cost-cutting exercise. The former United manager, 82, won 13 Premier League titles and two Champions League crowns among a huge trophy haul during nearly 27 years at Old Trafford. The Athletic reported that the decision had been made amicably, with Ferguson stepping down from the global ambassador role when the season ends.

Ferguson, a regular at matches since he stepped down in 2013, will remain a non-executive director of the football club board. It comes as part of a wider cost-cutting exercise at United under INEOS, which has had responsibility for football operations at the club since its founder Jim Ratcliffe completed the purchase of a minority stake earlier this year.

Last month United posted losses of £113.2 million ($148 million) for the year ending June 30, 2024 -- their fifth straight year of losses. But the club said they are compliant with the Premier League's profitability and sustainability rules.

United have instigated a number of cost-saving measures, including a redundancy programme that cut about 250 jobs.

They are currently 14th in the Premier League after a poor start to the season, with manager Erik ten Hag under intense pressure ahead of Saturday's game against Brentford.

Manchester United's winless run stretched to five games in a 0-0 draw at Aston Villa on Sunday that did little to ease the pressure on Erik ten Hag.

Bruno Fernandes hit the crossbar with the best effort from either side with a second-half free-kick but United have now failed to score in their last three Premier League games.

Premier League: Manchester United play fifth straight winless game with stalemate against Aston Villa

Manchester United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe refused to guarantee Erik ten Hag's future at Old Trafford as he admitted the club is not "where it should be" under the troubled boss.

Ratcliffe had a chance to quash reports that Ten Hag is in danger of the sack when he spoke ahead of United's crucial Premier League trip to Aston Villa on Sunday.

But the 71-year-old's downbeat assessment of United's predicament was hardly encouraging for Ten Hag as he fights to save his job.&nbsp;

"I don't want to answer that question. I like Erik. I think he's a very good coach but at the end of the day it's not my call," Ratcliffe told the BBC on Friday.

Ten Hag's side are languishing in 13th place after winning only two of their first six league matches.

They suffered a dismal 3-0 home defeat against Tottenham last weekend and blew a two-goal lead in their 3-3 draw at Porto in the Europa League on Thursday.

United's struggles have piled pressure on Ten Hag, who only survived a woeful eighth-place finish last season after Ratcliffe and his advisors conducted an internal review into the Dutchman's turbulent two-year reign.

Ratcliffe reportedly spoke to former Bayern Munich and Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel about the United job during the review before opting to keep faith with Ten Hag, who had masterminded a surprise FA Cup final win over Manchester City in May.

But the British billionaire, who took charge of United's football operations after buying a stake in the club in February, was more equivocal about Ten Hag on Friday when he was pressed on his manager's travails.

Insisting any decision on the former Ajax boss would be made in conjunction with United's new sporting director Dan Ashworth and chief executive Omar Berrada, Ratcliffe said: "It's the management team that's running Manchester United that have to decide how we best run the team in many different respects.

"But that team that's running Manchester United has only been together since June or July. They weren't there in January, February, March or April -- Omar and Dan Ashworth. They only arrived in July.

"They've only been there, you can count it in weeks almost. They've not been there a long time so they need to take stock and make some sensible decisions.

"Our objective is very clear, we want to take Manchester United back to where it should be, and it's not there yet, obviously. That's very clear."

Premier League: Jim Ratcliffe refuses to guarantee Erik Ten Hag's Man Utd future

Harry Maguire struck in the 91st minute to spare Manchester United's blushes as they rescued a 3-3 draw at Porto in the Europa League on Thursday, while Chelsea kickstarted their Conference League campaign with a home win. Tottenham maintained their 100 percent start in the Europa League at Ferencvaros but Serie A side Roma went down 1-0 in Sweden against Elfsborg.

The beleaguered Erik ten Hag's Man United made a blistering start in Porto with goals from Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund firing them into a 2-0 lead in the opening 20 minutes. But Pepe pulled one back for the hosts on 27 minutes before a brace by Samu Omorodion either side of the break flipped the game on its head.

Bruno Fernandes was given his marching orders for a high boot with nine minutes remaining and United seemed to be heading to a second defeat in a week after losing their skipper to another red card. But Maguire popped up in injury time to head in from a corner and grab the Manchester club their second draw in two Europa League outings this term and relieve some of the pressure on Ten Hag.

"I don't judge us in this moment. Judge us at the end of the season," Ten Hag told TNT Sports. "We are in the process. Just wait. We have to develop this team. We will work and continue. We will fight."

Chelsea marked their first-ever appearance in the Conference League with a 4-2 win over visiting Belgian side Gent. Manager Enzo Maresca utilised his large squad, naming an entirely different starting XI to the one that played in the league at the weekend.

Renato Veiga headed Chelsea into the lead in the 12th minute, which Pedro Neto then doubled one minute after the interval. Tsuyoshi Watanabe made it 2-1 in the 50th minute but two goals from Christopher Nkunku and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall in seven minutes killed off the tie before Omri Gandelman scored a consolation.

A 44th-minute penalty by Michael Baidoo was enough to give Elfsborg a surprise 1-0 win at home to Roma, who sit on one point after two games.

<h2>- Johnson on fire -</h2>

Earlier, Tottenham ground out a 2-1 win away to Hungary's Ferencvaros in the Europa League. Goals in both halves from Pape Sarr and Brennan Johnson did the job for spurs despite a late Barnabas Varga strike.&nbsp;

"I'm really happy. It's never easy going away from home in Europe," Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou told TNT sports. "You saw the atmosphere tonight, there were a lot of things to deal with and also with four teenagers (in the team)."

An inexperienced Spurs side made a slow start and Ferencvaros thought they had taken the lead in the 18th minute through Varga, but VAR ruled that there had been an offside in the build-up.

The Premier League club broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute when Sarr was the only player in the Ferencvaros box to keep his cool. The home side failed to clear the danger on three occasions, allowing Sarr to pounce and slot home from inside the six-yard box.

As Ferencvaros started to threaten late on, Johnson got his fifth in as many games with a left-footed finish that kissed the post on its way into the back of the net in the 86th minute. And Spurs needed the two-goal buffer as Varga scored in the 90th minute to set up a nervous finale.

We will fight." Chelsea marked their first-ever appearance in the Conference League with a 4-2 win over visiting Belgian side Gent. - Johnson on fire - Earlier, Tottenham ground out a 2-1 win away to Hungary's Ferencvaros in the Europa League. Goals in both halves from Pape Sarr and Brennan Johnson did the job for spurs despite a late Barnabas Varga strike. "I'm really happy. It's never easy going away from home in Europe," Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou told TNT sports. "You saw the atmosphere tonight, there were a lot of things to deal with and also with four teenagers (in the team)." An inexperienced Spurs side made a slow start and Ferencvaros thought they had taken the lead in the 18th minute through Varga, but VAR ruled that there had been an offside in the build-up. Harry Maguire spares Manchester United's blushes in Europe as Chelsea, Tottenham emerge victorious

Erik ten Hag pleaded to be given until the end of the season as Manchester United boss after needing a late Harry Maguire equaliser to salvage a 3-3 draw at Porto in the Europa League on Thursday.

Ten Hag was under major pressure before the trip to Portugal after just two wins from United's first six Premier League fixtures of the season left them languishing in 13th place in the table.

The Red Devils have also drawn their opening two Europa League games to sit 21st in the 36-team table.

"We will get there, don't judge us in this moment," said Ten Hag. "Judge us in the end of the season. We will improve, we have two seasons where we achieved finals. Just wait, we will develop and progress this team."

Ten Hag has fiercely defended his record after winning the League Cup and FA Cup in his first two seasons in charge at Old Trafford -- ending United's six-year trophy drought in the process.

A shock victory over Manchester City in last season's FA Cup final was widely credited with saving his job despite finishing eighth in the Premier League.

But the United hierarchy could be forced to act in the upcoming international break after they travel to face Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday.

Ten Hag could not have asked for a better start in Porto as goals from Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund put United 2-0 up inside 20 minutes

However, the English giants have failed to win any of their last four away European games despite scoring three times in each of them.

Last season they crashed out of the Champions League at the group stages after losing 4-3 at Bayern Munich and FC Copenhagen plus a 3-3 draw at Galatasaray.

Another six-goal thriller took place at the Estadio do Dragao as Pepe and Samu Omorodion brought Porto level before half-time.

Omorodion smashed the home side in front early in the second half before United captain Bruno Fernandes was sent off for the second consecutive game.

But Maguire's header from a corner at least salvaged a point for Ten Hag.

"When you get 2-0 away from home you have to be a little bit more solid and there were far too many gaps," said Maguire. "Too many crosses were coming into the box for sure and they ultimately punished us for it."

The England international has lost his regular starting spot in the side to Matthijs de Ligt, who previously worked under Ten Hag at Ajax.

Maguire said the pressure his manager was facing is what comes with the "privilege" of being in the spotlight at one of the world's biggest clubs.

"I've played for this club for six years, I know how it works. When you go on a bad spell players come under pressure and also the manager does," added Maguire. "He's experienced enough and been at this club long enough so I'm sure he knows how to deal with it. It's part of the privilege you have playing for this club."

‘Judge me at the end of season’ - Manchester United boss Erik Ten Hag pleads for more time after Porto draw

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is confident of his team’s revival of fortunes after the club’s recent setbacks in the Premier League and Europa League. Speaking on Wednesday (Oct 2), the Red Devils boss backed his team to bounce back as they prepare to face Porto in the Europa League. Questions have been raised about ten Hag’s future after they lost 3-0 to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.

<h2>Eric ten Hag backs Man United for revival</h2>

"We are going to make a success from the season," he&nbsp;told Sky Sports.

"Nothing is easy, but this is nothing for me to panic about," he added. "We can sort [the problems] out, this team can sort this out."

"We created a togetherness in the summer with the ownership and the leadership. We made this agreement, and we were all behind it. We know the strategy [is to bring in] young players in a transition period. They also know in May in all my last six seasons there were always trophies and that is what we are aiming for."

So far this season, United have lost three matches in the Premier League, having collected only seven points in six matches. Two of the three defeats have come at Old Trafford, highlighting further issues in the team’s fortunes.

<h2>Make or break for Ten Hag</h2>

United will face Porto away in the Europa League, while their next Premier League game is against Aston Villa. Premier League: Tottenham beat 10-man Man Utd to up pressure on Erik ten Hag

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has revealed Son Heung-min is fighting to prove his fitness for Sunday's clash with Manchester United.

Son limped off with a hamstring injury in the 71st minute of Thursday's 3-0 win against Qarabag in the Europa League.

Postecoglou was uncertain about the extent of his captain's injury immediately after the Qarabag tie.

But he said on Friday that the South Korea forward wants to train on Saturday to show he is ready to feature in the Premier League showdown at Old Trafford.

"Fair to say the boys are fairly tired, the ones who put in a shift. Apart from Sonny, everybody is okay," Postecoglou told reporters.

"Sonny, I don't think is too bad. He wants to train tomorrow and we will see how it goes and make a decision from there. We have another day up our sleeve to give him every chance."

If Son is unable to recover in time, Postecoglou has several options on the left wing, including Sweden international Dejan Kulusevski.

Germany's Timo Werner replaced Son on Thursday, while 17-year-old attacker Mikey Moore could be handed a full debut.

"Timo and Mikey can certainly come into the frame. We have Kulusevski who can play wide as well so we've got some options there, but firstly we'll see how Sonny is," Postecoglou said.

Son's long-term future in north London was thrown into the spotlight earlier this week after he said no talks over a new contract had taken place with the Tottenham hierarchy.

Son's current deal expires next year but Tottenham hold the option to extend his contract by a further year and reportedly plan to activate that clause.

Postecoglou made it clear he wants the 32-year-old to stay, with Son into his 10th season at the club he joined from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015.

"I don't always have the final say but certainly I like to think my input is significant on it," he said.

"I think it is part of a broader discussion around Sonny but the way he is performing and leading the club at the moment, I certainly want him to stick around for a while."

Premier League: Spurs skipper Son in race to recover from injury for Man Utd clash

Manchester United stuttered to a 1-1 draw at home to FC Twente in their opening Europa League game on Wednesday as Christian Eriksen scored but then made an error that led to the equaliser. The Denmark international put United ahead with a powerful first-half strike on a soaking wet night at Old Trafford before Sam Lammers equalised for Twente on 68 minutes after Eriksen was caught in possession.

United manager Erik ten Hag selected a strong side to take on Twente, a club where the Dutchman came through the youth ranks and had three spells as a player before moving into coaching with the Eredivisie side.

Marcus Rashford returned to the line-up after coming off the bench in Saturday's 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace, with Harry Maguire replacing Matthijs de Ligt in defence and Manuel Ugarte taking the place of Kobbie Mainoo.

United had an early let-off when Lammers dragged narrowly wide after slack play by Diogo Dalot, before Twente goalkeeper Lars Unnerstall pulled off a brilliant save to stop Mees Hilgers from turning into his own net.

He was well beaten though by Eriksen's thunderbolt after the ball broke to the midfielder inside the Twente area. Andre Onana turned Sem Steijn's low free-kick around the post near the hour, but Twente drew level when former Rangers forward Lammers dispossessed Eriksen and ran through to fire home.

Unnerstall tipped Joshua Zirkzee's stinging effort over the crossbar and Bruno Fernandes went close, with Unnerstall producing a magnificent reflex save in stoppage time to keep out a Maguire header deflected by Gijs Besselink.&nbsp;

United ultimately had to settle for an underwhelming point to start the new-look, 36-team league phase that mirrors the format of the revamped Champions League.&nbsp;

Porto, the 2003 and 2011 winners of the second-tier European competition, lost 3-2 away to Norwegian champions Bodo/Glimt, who played most of the second half with 10 men. Ruben van Bommel, the son of former Netherlands international Mark, scored twice for AZ Alkmaar in a 3-2 victory over Swedish side Elfsborg, with ex-Tottenham forward Troy Parrott netting the winner from the spot.

Mauro Icardi's last-gasp goal sealed a 3-1 win for Galatasaray over PAOK in Istanbul, while Nice were left to rue a missed penalty in their 1-1 draw against Real Sociedad. Ander Barrenetxea gave La Real the lead before Pablo Rosario equalised on the stroke of half-time, but Evann Guessand saw his second-half spot-kick saved for the hosts.

Slavia Prague won 2-0 away to Bulgaria's Ludogorets, while Danish champions Midtjylland drew 1-1 with Hoffenheim and Anderlecht overcame Hungarian side Ferencvaros 2-1. Boulaye Dia scored twice in Lazio's 3-0 win over Dynamo Kyiv in Hamburg as both teams had a player sent off.

Unnerstall tipped Joshua Zirkzee's stinging effort over the crossbar and Bruno Fernandes went close, with Unnerstall producing a magnificent reflex save in stoppage time to keep out a Maguire header deflected by Gijs Besselink. Varane joined United in 2024, lifting a League Cup and an FA Cup with the English club.

He left Old Trafford last season to move to Cesc Fabregas' newly-promoted Como, playing just one Coppa Italia match, when he sustained a knee injury.

"From Lens to Madrid to Manchester, and playing for our national team," Varane said.

"I have defended every badge with everything I have, and loved every minute of the journey," he added.

Former Real Madrid, Man Utd defender Raphael Varane announces shock retirement from professional football

Manchester United and Tottenham kick off their Europa League campaigns this week, hoping to put disappointing starts to the Premier League season behind them.

Erik ten Hag's United have failed to show any real improvement from a miserable season last term, sitting outside the top 10 already domestically with just seven points from five matches.

The Dutch manager narrowly clung on to his job despite leading the Old Trafford giants to their worst-ever Premier League finish of eighth last term, largely thanks to a surprise FA Cup final victory over Manchester City.

United spent heavily in the transfer market, but the expected upturn in fortunes on the pitch are yet to materialise ahead of their Europa League opener at home to Twente on Wednesday.

A goalless draw at Crystal Palace last weekend snuffed out some of the positivity garnered from the 3-0 win over Southampton and League Cup thrashing of Barnsley, but Ten Hag insists his team are progressing.

"The performance is good, but we are not happy with the score. We are disappointed with the score, it's clear," he said after the stalemate at Selhurst Park.

"But I know one thing for sure in football, it's a long way to go and when you play in the quality we now deliver the points will come, the goals will come.

"Now we can work on the team, we can build structures, we can also bring out some consistency in selection, and that helps, of course, to bring the patterns and routines in, and then you play better."

Man United are back in the revamped Europa League after a disastrous Champions League performance last season that saw the three-time European champions finish bottom of their group.

Anything other than a victory against Dutch club Twente, back in the competition proper for the first time since 2012, in the first of their eight league-phase matches would pile the pressure on Ten Hag and his players.

<h2>Spurs seek solace</h2>

Discontent has also started to grow among Tottenham fans for the first time since their blistering start to life under Ange Postecoglou 12 months ago.

A 3-1 victory over Brentford at the weekend at least helped them bounce back from successive Premier League defeats at the hands of Newcastle and local rivals Arsenal.

But Spurs will be desperate to end their 17-year wait for a major trophy and will see the new Europa League, which will not feature any teams dropping down from the Champions League like in previous seasons, as a golden opportunity.

They host Azeri club Qarabag on Thursday.

"I keep saying to people, 'Show me a success story and I'll show you a struggle'. People forget the struggle and look at the end bit," Postecoglou said last week.

Elsewhere, crisis-hit Roma welcome Athletic Bilbao to the Stadio Olimpico, hoping to continue their strong recent form in Europe.

The Serie A club have reached at least the Europa League semi-finals in three of the past four seasons -- the exception their 2022 Conference League triumph under Jose Mourinho.

However, Roma supporters were left furious by the sacking of coach Daniele De Rossi, venting their fury at management and players they consider responsible during Sunday's win over Udinese.

The anger at De Rossi's dismissal has been such that CEO Lina Souloukou, who resigned on Saturday morning, had been placed under police protection after online threats made against her and family.

A banner hung outside Roma's Trigoria training ground described Greek Souloukou, who was previously CEO of Olympiakos, as "evil".

Other Europa League fixtures include 2022 winners Eintracht Frankfurt hosting Viktoria Plzen, while four-time European champions Ajax take on Besiktas in Amsterdam.

Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur aim to start better in Europa League

Manchester United crushed Barnsley 7-0 as troubled winger Antony scored his first goal this season and Marcus Rashford struck twice to extend his revival in the League Cup third round on Tuesday.

While United ran riot, Fulham made unwanted history as the Premier League club were beaten by second-tier Preston 16-15 on penalties after the tournament's longest ever shoot-out.

Languishing in 10th place in the Premier League after two defeats in their first four games, United were never in danger of an upset against their third-tier opponents at Old Trafford.

Rashford, Antony and Alejandro Garnacho all netted before half-time to effectively seal United's second successive victory after Saturday's Premier League win at Southampton.

Rashford and Garnacho each scored again after the interval and Christian Eriksen's double wrapped up United's biggest win since boss Erik ten Hag arrived from Ajax in 2022.

"It is the first time this team is playing together. Once we found our patterns we scored some great goals," Ten Hag said.

"We played with a lot of speed and were ruthless. The key was the right attitude and to be 100 percent concentrated.

"Last season was for everyone difficult, but we ended with the FA Cup. We hit our target and that is what we aim for this season, we want to progress."

Despite promising to take the League Cup "very seriously", Ten Hag made eight changes, with Manuel Ugarte handed his first start after the midfielder's arrival from Paris Saint-Germain.

Ten Hag's raft of switches were no hindrance for United as they made a flying start to their bid to win the tournament for the second time in three seasons.

The Dutchman had described Rashford as being like a bottle of tomato ketchup after he scored his first goal of the season at Southampton last weekend.

Having rarely scored during a difficult campaign last season, Ten Hag claimed Rashford would enjoy a spurt of success after breaking his duck.

His prediction looked spot on in the 16th minute as Garnacho's raking pass picked out Rashford and he cut inside Marc Roberts before firing high past Barnsley keeper Gaga Slonina into the top corner.

It was the first time the 26-year-old had scored in successive games since March.

Antony was making his first start this season and the out-of-favour Brazilian international converted a 35th-minute penalty after being fouled by Slonina as he ran through on goal.

Garnacho stabbed in United's third goal from close range in first-half stoppage time.

Garnacho netted again in the 49th minute, sprinting onto Eriksen's pass and slotting home.

Rashford bagged his brace in the 58th minute, taking Garnacho's pass and finishing with aplomb.

With Barnsley utterly outclassed, Eriksen steered in two clinical finishes in the 81st and 85th minutes.

<h2>Everton crash again</h2>

At Deepdale, it took 34 penalties in total before Preston beat Fulham after their 1-1 draw.

At 15-15 in the shootout after a miss from each team, Fulham's Timothy Castagne blazed over and Preston's Ryan Ledson calmly netted the winner.

The previous League Cup shoot-out record was set in 2016 when Derby beat Carlisle 14-13.

Everton's wretched start to the season showed no signs of abating after Southampton won 6-5 on penalties following a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park.

Sean Dyche's side, bottom of the Premier League after four consecutive defeats, took the lead through Abdoulaye Doucoure's 20th-minute header.

But Taylor Harwood-Bellis equalised before half-time and Alex McCarthy saved Ashley Young's penalty in the shoot-out to win it for Southampton, who have also lost all four league games this term.

Crystal Palace's England winger Eberechi Eze scored in a 2-1 victory at his former club QPR.

Brentford survived an early scare against third-tier Leyton Orient before Fabio Carvalho's first goal for the club inspired a 3-1 win at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Manchester United hit Barnsley for seven goals in League Cup rout

Manchester United gave manager Erik ten Hag some breathing space with a 3-0 win at Southampton on Saturday thanks to goals from Matthijs de Ligt, Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho.

However, United had to ride out an early Southampton storm and the outcome could have been vastly different had Andre Onana not saved Cameron Archer's penalty at 0-0.

De Ligt's first United goal and Rashford's first for six months quickly flipped momentum in the visitors' favour just before half-time.

Southampton's woes were compounded when captain Jack Stephens was sent off 11 minutes from time for a wild challenge on Garnacho, who rounded off the scoring in stoppage time.

"Sometimes you have to find a way to win," said Ten Hag. "The first minutes we had some problems but after Andre stopped the penalty and the goal by De Ligt I think the game was all ours."

Saints remain without a point from four games on their return to the Premier League, while United's second win of the season lifts them up to eighth.

Ten Hag began the campaign already under scrutiny after surviving an internal review of his position in May following an eighth-place finish in the Premier League last season.

Back-to-back defeats before the international break to Brighton and Liverpool had ramped up the pressure even more on the Dutchman and the Red Devils had to ride their luck early on at St&nbsp;Mary's.

A failure to make the most of some promising build-up play has been the story of Southampton's their return to the top flight.

Teenager Tyler Dibling caught the eye on his first Premier League start and his trickery lured Diogo Dalot into a rash challenge inside the area.

But Archer's spot-kick lacked conviction and Onana parried his attempt before easily clutching the striker's follow-up header at the second attempt.

<h2>'Huge for him'</h2>

Just two minutes later, United led as De Ligt put a difficult week with the Dutch national team behind him to open his account.

The former Bayern Munich centre-back was subbed off at half-time by Ronald Koeman after errors that led to two German goals in a 2-2 Nations League draw in Amsterdam.

A short corner caught Southampton napping and Bruno Fernandes' cross perfectly picked out De Ligt to head into the bottom corner.

"Three points from the games is not enough so there was some pressure on this game but we played really well," said De Ligt.

"Big credit to Andre who saved a really important penalty and changed the game for us."

Rashford then ended his wait since March to get on the scoresheet when his low strike from outside the box curled into the far corner on 41 minutes.

"It is so huge for him," added Ten Hag. "For every striker to be on the scoring list is important. Now he has his first, I'm sure there will be more."

Aaron Ramsdale denied De Ligt a second before half-time as United threatened to run riot.

But the second period was far more sedate as the visitors comfortably held Southampton at bay before the home side's frustration bubbled over.

Stephens' unnecessary lunge caught Garnacho on the knee and was rightly punished with a straight red card.

The Argentine then rubbed salt in Southampton's wounds with a thumping finish from Dalot's cross in the 96th minute.

Premier League: Manchester United beat 10-man Southampton for second win in four games

Manchester United boss Erik Ten Hag&nbsp;reacted to the criticism levied on him by former Red Devils' forward Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portugal captain, who recently surpassed 900 career goals during the international break, slammed Ten Hag for being too negative for a club of United's stature. Ronaldo was pointing out at the United manager's recent remark where he admitted that the club is 'long way away' from winning the Premier League.

Now, Ten Hag&nbsp;reacted to Ronaldo's comments and stated that he is entitled to his opinion. At a press conference, on Thursday (Sep 12), the United manager said, "He (CR7) said that Manchester United can't win the Premier League." He reiterated, "No, he said this if you read the article very well. So, he's far away in Saudi, far from Manchester. Everyone is entitled to have an opinion. It's OK."

He further added, "It doesn't impact me (Ronaldo's remark). I know in the process where we are, what we have to do, where we are going. I have said before we are still in a transition period. We have to integrate a lot of young players also in the team.

"We are still dealing with injuries, we have to bring the injuries back in the team. Before anyone thinks about excuses, no, we have to win every game. I know that, the team knows this and it doesn't matter who is available. We will focus on every game and have in every game the mindset that we have to win."

Under Ten Hag, United lifted the League Cup and FA Cup&nbsp;over the past two seasons.

Ronaldo, in an episode of the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, slammed Ten Hag and stated, "Manchester, they need to rebuild everything, in my opinion. The coach, they say they cannot compete to win the league and Champions League. Manchester United coach, you cannot say that you're not going to fight to win the league or Champions League.

"You have to be, to mentally say, listen, maybe we don't have that potential, but I cannot say that. We're going to try. You have to try," he added.

Ronaldo joined United, on Alex Ferguson's insistence, for a second stint in mid-2021, which didn't yield fruitful results. In late 2022, he left the club, to join his current one Al-Nassr in Saudi, after a fallout with Ten Hag. Under the Dutchman, Ronaldo had fallen out of favour and wasn't a regular in the starting XI.

At present, United are at the 14th spot in the 2024/25 Premier League standings, with one win and two thrashings in the new season.

Manchester United boss Erik Ten Hag reacted to the criticism levied on him by former Red Devils' forward Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portugal captain, who recently surpassed 900 career goals during the international break, slammed Ten Hag for being too negative for a club of United's stature.

'Doesn't affect me, he is far from Manchester': Erik Ten Hag hits back at criticism from Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo says Erik ten Hag's attitude is too negative, urging the Manchester United manager to target the Premier League title even though the club need to "rebuild from the bottom".

The Portugal star, who now plays for Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia, fell out with Ten Hag before his second spell at Old Trafford ended late in 2022.

Ronaldo believes his former club needs sweeping changes but that Ten Hag should not rule out winning major trophies in the meantime.

The Dutchman has said he is "quite confident" of claiming more silverware this campaign after lifting the League Cup and FA Cup over the past two seasons.

But he said in July his team are a "long way away" from being ready to win the Premier League, which they have not won since Alex Ferguson's final season in charge in 2013.

"Manchester, they need to rebuild everything, in my opinion," Ronaldo said in an episode of the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, due to be released on Thursday. "The coach, they say they cannot compete to win the league and Champions League. Manchester United coach, you cannot say that you're not going to fight to win the league or Champions League.

"You have to be, to mentally say, listen, maybe we don't have that potential, but I cannot say that. We're going to try. You have to try."

United upset Manchester City in the FA Cup final in May but they endured their worst Premier League campaign last term, finishing eighth, and the 20-time English champions have lost two of their opening three matches this season.

"This club needs time to rebuild because it's still one of the best clubs in the world, but they need to change," Ronaldo said. "They understand that. This is the only way. This is why they show, they start to change again, the structure of the club, the president, the infrastructures and everything. The owners of the club."

<h2>'Bright future'</h2>

British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe completed his purchase of a minority stake in the club in February and has since overseen major changes in the club hierarchy after taking control of football operations.

"I believe that the future will be bright," said Ronaldo. "I believe, but they don't depend only on the talents. It's more than that. It's all club, all, not only players, club, everything as a unit, united.

"They have to rebuild from the bottom. If not, they cannot compete. It will be impossible."

Five-time Ballon d'Or winner Ronaldo, who spent six seasons with United earlier in his career, scored 27 goals in 54 appearances during his second spell at Old Trafford after signing from Juventus in 2021.

Following his exit just over a year later, he claimed he felt "betrayed", while saying of Ten Hag: "I don't have respect for him because he doesn't show respect for me."

However, the 39-year-old said he still loves the club.

"I'm not happy the way it all happened but, in the same way, we cannot control some points of our life sometimes, but it's done, already done," he said. "To prove that I'm right or wrong, this is not my issue any more. I say what I have to say and for me it's done."

He added: "I love that club. I'm not that kind of guy that forgot the past."

Manchester United great Cristiano Ronaldo bashes Ten Hag for 'negative mindset', urges club for overhaul

Manchester United on Wednesday reported a bigger annual net loss, marking the fifth consecutive year of financial losses for the English club, and said core profit this financial year could be lower due to its restructuring initiatives. Its net loss widened to 113.2 million pounds ($148.14 million) in the year ended June 30, from 28.7 million pounds a year earlier.

Despite that, United achieved record annual revenue of 661.8 million pounds, up 2.1% compared with the previous year, as the men's team reaped the benefits of participating in the lucrative UEFA Champions League competition.

"We are working towards greater financial sustainability and making changes to our operations to make them more efficient, to ensure we are directing our resources to enhancing on-pitch performance," stated the club's newly appointed CEO, Omar Berrada.

Berrada took the reins in July after moving from Manchester City's parent company, City Football Group. For the fiscal year ending June, the club expects an adjusted core profit between 145 and 160 million pounds, with revenues ranging from 650 to 670 million pounds.

Manchester United posts fifth successive year of financial losses

Manchester United have agreed a partnership with local authorities to investigate how plans to rebuild or replace Old Trafford would impact the area around the club's iconic stadium.

The Old Trafford Regeneration Task Force was set up in March under the chairmanship of World Athletics president Sebastian Coe.

It is understood to be focused on discussions over building a new 100,000-capacity stadium rather than redeveloping Old Trafford, the 74,310-capacity home for United since 1910.

However, no firm decision on the best way forward is set to be taken until the end of the year.

On Monday, United announced the club would be represented on an advisory team looking at how a new or redeveloped stadium can spark wider social and economic regeneration.

Trafford Council and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) are also involved in the new partnership, United said.

"The objective of this once-in-a-generation project is not only the development of a world-class stadium for the north of England, but also to ensure that this brings broad social and economic benefits to the local area and surrounding region," Coe said.

United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe said in February that the regeneration project, with a new stadium at its heart, would cost £2 billion ($2.6 billion).

The British billionaire believes a new ground for United could be a northern rival to Wembley.&nbsp;

He previously said the project should attract some taxpayer funding.

"People in the north pay their taxes and there is an argument that you could think about a more ambitious project in the north which would be fitting for England, for the Champions League final or the FA Cup final and act as a catalyst to regenerate southern Manchester, which has got quite significant history in the UK," Ratcliffe said.

Manchester United partners with local authorities for Old Trafford revamp

Manchester United chief executive Omar Berrada says struggling manager Erik ten Hag has the full backing of the club despite a poor start to the Premier League season. United finished eighth in the league last season -- their worst since 1990 -- but Ten Hag led his men to an unexpected FA Cup final win against Manchester City.

The Dutchman was handed a one-year contract extension in July, but only after club bosses considered alternatives. Now, Ten Hag is under pressure again, following Sunday's miserable 3-0 home defeat to Liverpool, United's second loss from three games this season, which left them 14th in the table.

Speaking alongside new sporting director Dan Ashworth shortly before kick-off against Liverpool, Berrada said it would take more than a couple of bad results to shake the club's belief in their manager. "Do we still believe in Erik? Absolutely," he said. "We think Erik is the right coach for us and we're fully backing him."

Ten Hag's contract was extended before either Berrada or Ashworth had taken up their positions but both said they were happy with the decision.

Ashworth said: "I've really enjoyed working with Erik for the last eight weeks. "I see my job is to support him in every way I possibly can and whether that's operationally, whether that's with recruitment, whether that's with medical, whether that's with psychology, whether that's training ground flow, it's just to take as much of that off him to allow him to fully focus on the training pitch and the match tactical plan to deliver success for Manchester United."

Ashworth's first few weeks in the job were dominated by the transfer window, in which United signed Matthijs De Ligt, Manuel Ugarte, Joshua Zirkzee, Leny Yoro and Noussair Mazraoui. But just as notable were the departures of players including Scott McTominay and Jadon Sancho. After a falling-out with Ten Hag early last season, Sancho returned to former club Borussia Dortmund on loan in January.

The pair appeared to have made up as Sancho took part in United's pre-season and played in the Community Shield but on deadline day he joined Chelsea on loan with an obligation to buy. Asked what had changed, Ashworth said it had been down to the player's wish to move on.

"We felt we had enough depth in that particular position to be able to cover it, we've got four really good wide players -- Jadon was a fifth -- and it just enabled us to make that decision that if it was good for him and good for us it was something we were willing to consider," he said.

"He wanted to explore the opportunity at Chelsea, like Scott wanted to explore the opportunity at Napoli, like Aaron (Wan-Bissaka) wanted to explore the opportunity at West Ham. We're not in a position where we're kicking players out of the club."

Premier League 2024/25: Erik Ten Hag has Manchester United's full backing, says CEO Omar Berrada

Liverpool legend Mohamed Salah has hinted at a potential exit from the club after scoring in the 3-0 win over Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday (Sep 1). Salah, in the final year of his Liverpool contract, spoke after the match having scored at Old Trafford for the seventh consecutive season. The 32-year-old stated “It is my last year in the club” and could leave on a free transfer at the end of the current season.

"As you know, it is my last year in the club," in reference to the fact that his Liverpool contract expires at the end of the season. He later attempted to clarify the situation,” Salah said while speaking to Sky Sports after the win.

"Coming into the game, I said it could be the last time. No one at the club has spoken to me about contracts, so I'm just like, okay, I am playing my last season and see what happens at the end of the season.

"It is not up to me, but nobody has talked to me from the club. We will see."

A legend of the game for Liverpool, the Egyptian was instrumental in Liverpool’s success against Manchester United on Sunday having played a key role. Salah’s goal was also his 10th at the iconic Old Trafford Stadium cementing his legacy as one of the best visiting players in history.

The win also meant Liverpool continued their winning run to the season having won all three matches so far under new head coach Arne Slot. The Dutchman has been instrumental in Liverpool’s success in the early parts while the same can’t be said for Erik ten Hag. With two defeats in two, pressure is mounting on the Dutchman who survived the sack at the end of last season having won the FA Cup.

Premier League: Liverpool legend Mohamed Salah hints at exit, says 'it is my last year in the club'

Manchester United had an evening to forget in the Premier League after they lost 3-0 to arch-rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday (Sep 2). United, beaten in stoppage time by Brighton last week were condemned to a handsome win for Arne Slot’s side as the latter maintained a perfect start to the Premier League season. After the match, Erik ten Hag admitted key reasons for the defeat while also insisting he is not Harry Potter to work magic when it comes to the fitness issues of new arrival Manuel Ugarte.

<h2>Ten Hag underlines key reasons for defeat</h2>

"It will take time. It is not like I am Harry Potter,” Ten Hag said while speaking to Sky Sports. "We made mistakes and they were very clinical in finishing, they did very well. All three goals are mistakes from us - individual errors. Maybe about the last one, you can debate, 'where is our double six?' but all the others, Liverpool did brilliant. Arne took over, the turnover and the way they finished was so good.”

"Don't argue this [that the game was level apart from the goals]. It's clear Liverpool deserved it. We have to be humble, take this and improve our game."

United had a poor day at the office having conceded first-half goals through Luis Diaz with the Colombian carrying the Casemiro in his back pocket. The Brazilian was at fault for the opening goal while another mistake saw the lead doubled before the break. Things went from bad to worse for United after Mohamed Salah netted his 10th goal at Old Trafford in all competitions. This was also the seventh consecutive time he had scored at the iconic venue.

United will take on Southampton after the international break as they look to bounce back at St Mary's Stadium. The Saints are winless in all their three matches and will be an easy opponent for the Red Devils to get their mojo back.

After the match, Erik ten Hag admitted key reasons for the defeat while also insisting he is not Harry Potter to work magic when it comes to the fitness issues of new arrival Manuel Ugarte. Ten Hag underlines key reasons for defeat "It will take time. Arne took over, the turnover and the way they finished was so good.” "Don't argue this [that the game was level apart from the goals]. It's clear Liverpool deserved it. We have to be humble, take this and improve our game." The Brazilian was at fault for the opening goal while another mistake saw the lead doubled before the break.

'I am not Harry Potter': Erik ten Hag underlines errors, Ugarte injury as key reasons for Man Utd defeat

Arne Slot passed his first major examination as Liverpool manager with a statement 3-0 win at Manchester United thanks to Luis Diaz's double and a Mohamed Salah strike on Sunday.

Slot has the unenviable task of succeeding Jurgen Klopp but has made a perfect start with a 100 per cent record from three Premier League games to sit alongside Manchester City at the top of the table.

A second consecutive defeat leaves United boss Erik ten Hag already under pressure just three games into the new season.

The Dutchman survived an internal review at the end of last season after overseeing the club's worst ever Premier League finish of eighth.

A shock FA Cup final win over Manchester City saved Ten Hag's job and offered hope for a fresh start, particularly after being backed with a £200 million ($262 million) spend in the transfer market.

But all the hallmarks of United's failings last season were exposed by the impressive visitors.

Casemiro was the fall guy for the home side, as the Brazilian was at fault for both Diaz's goals and hooked off at half-time in favour of youngster Toby Collyer.

United paraded new £42 million signing Manuel Ugarte before kick-off and must now hope the Uruguayan can have a transformational impact to shore up the midfield.

Liverpool, by contrast, did not delve into the market for a defensive midfielder, and Slot's decision to move Ryan Gravenberch into that role has proved an inspired early decision.

Despite Liverpool's ascendency over United during Klopp's reign, the German managed to win only two of his 11 away games against United.

The Reds twice failed to make the most of their dominance at Old Trafford last season as United edged a thrilling FA Cup quarter-final 4-3 and then snatched a 2-2 draw in the league that realistically ended Liverpool's title chances.

This time Liverpool were ruthless and could easily have matched their record 5-0 victory away to United in 2021.

United had been handed an early reprieve when Trent Alexander-Arnold fired in Diaz's deflected cross but the ball had struck Salah, who was in an offside position, on its way through to the right-back.

Casemiro had looked more like his old self in the opening matches of the campaign after struggling badly last season.

But the five-time Champions League winner had another afternoon that suggested his time at this level are now over.

Casemiro's slack pass was pounced on by Gravenberch who fed Salah and his dinked cross was headed in by Diaz at the back post.

Liverpool needed an important save from Alisson Becker moments later to parry Noussair Mazraoui's low powerful effort.

However, Ten Hag's men collapsed once the second goal went in three minutes before half-time.

Casemiro was caught in possession by Diaz, who then raced into the box to sweep home Salah's cross.

Salah got his customary goal against United on 56 minutes to rub salt in the home side's wounds.

The Egyptian's stunning finish from Dominik Szoboszlai's pass was his 15th goal in 16 meetings against the Red Devils, including at least one in each of his last seven appearances at Old Trafford.

Salah should have had more as he blazed over from close range with his team-mates begging for a pass.

Another brilliant Alisson save from Joshua Zirkzee then prolonged Liverpool's record of not having conceded under Slot.

Arsenal have been tipped as the side most likely to dethrone City as champions after four consecutive titles for Pep Guardiola's men.

But Liverpool could have done little more in the early weeks of the campaign to dispel any doubts that they remain contenders even without Klopp at the helm.

Premier League: Luis Diaz brace ensures perfect start for Liverpool and Arne Slot as Manchester United unravel

Chelsea reportedly agreed a deal to sign Jadon Sancho from Manchester United as Raheem Sterling is set to exit Stamford Bridge and join Arsenal on loan after a frenzied transfer deadline day for Premier League clubs. The clubs did not confirm the deals prior to the 2200 GMT deadline, but Sancho is expected join the Blues initially on loan with an obligation to make a permanent move next season for a reported £25 million ($33 million).

United have cut their losses on the 24-year-old, who has failed to live up to his price-tag ever since a £73 million move from Borussia Dortmund in 2021. Sancho has not played a league game for United since posting on social media he had been made a "scapegoat" for poor performances just under a year ago.

But he shone during a loan spell back at Dortmund during the second half of last season, helping the German giants reach the Champions League final. Sancho's arrival adds to Chelsea's bloated squad, but one of those outcast by new boss Enzo Maresca has found a new home as Sterling moved across London to Arsenal.

The England international previously worked with Gunners' boss Mikel Arteta during their time at Manchester City. Sterling, who cost Chelsea £50 million from City just two years ago, was just one of a number of players urged to find a new club.

The 29-year-old gives Arsenal an extra attacking dimension in their bid to become champions for the first time since 2004.

Chelsea's attempts to agree a deal for Napoli striker Victor Osimhen fell through. Saudi club Al-Ahli had also been interested in the Nigerian but instead signed England international striker Ivan Toney.

Brentford have reportedly received a £40 million fee for Toney. "We thank him for so many magic moments and wish him all the best for his next chapter. Ivan leaves as a Brentford legend," said Bees manager Thomas Frank.

<h2>- Man Utd sign Ugarte -</h2>

United completed a 50 million euro (£42 million) move for Uruguayan international midfielder Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain. "Together we will fight to win trophies and reach the level where this club needs to be," said the 23-year-old.

Ugarte becomes the Red Devils' fifth major signing of the window after Leny Yoro,&nbsp;Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui and Joshua Zirkzee. But Erik ten Hag said he was sad to see Scott McTominay go after the Scottish international joined Napoli.

Arsenal added goalkeeper Neto as cover for David Raya on a season-long loan from Bournemouth, after letting Aaron Ramsdale leave for Southampton in a £25 million move.

Manchester City, though, refused to delve into the market on deadline day even if Pep Guardiola admitted he is taking a risk in not replacing Argentina striker Julian Alvarez, who departed for Atletico Madrid earlier this month.

"Maybe it is a mistake, I don't know but I don't like leaving players without playing for a long time," said Guardiola on his preference for a smaller squad.

<h2>- Newcastle frustrated -</h2>

Crystal Palace were among the busiest sides on Friday despite rebuffing interest in captain Marc Guehi from Newcastle. The Eagles signed striker Eddie Nketiah from Arsenal in a deal worth up to £30 million, French defender Maxence Lacroix from Wolfsburg and a loan deal for Chelsea's Trevoh Chalobah.

Wolves bolstered their squad with the signings of Brazilian midfielder Andre from Fluminense for £21 million and England goalkeeper Sam Johnstone. Nottingham Forest brought in West Ham midfielder James Ward-Prowse on loan and Brazilian defender Morato from Benfica.

Newcastle have the financial backing of the Saudi sovereign wealth fund, but have been frustrated in their attempts to quickly challenge at the top of the Premier League by the need to meet financial sustainability rules.

The Magpies were unable to add any major signings during this window. "I don't think the dream dies, necessarily, but I think it takes a lot longer," said Newcastle manager Eddie Howe on his club's bold ambitions of becoming English champions within a decade of the Saudi takeover in 2021.

Transfer deadline day: Chelsea sign Jadon Sancho on loan, Raheem Sterling joins Arsenal

Manchester United will travel to Turkish giants Fenerbahce, now coached by Jose Mourinho, among their eight games in the league phase of the new-look Europa League, the draw for which took place in Monaco on Friday.

The Old Trafford club won the Europa League with Mourinho as coach in 2017. He recently became coach of Fenerbahce, who were knocked out of the Champions League in the third qualifying round.

United will also notably play at home to 2022 Europa League runners-up Rangers and go to Portugal to play Porto, another of Mourinho's old sides.

Tottenham Hotspur, the other English representative in the competition, will also take on Rangers, in their case away from home.

Ange Postecoglou's side will also play at home to Roma and go to Istanbul to face Turkish champions Galatasaray.

The format of the Europa League has changed for this season, along the same lines of the new-look Champions League.

The number of clubs in the competition proper is now 36, all of whom are placed into one league but split into four pots of seeds.

Each participant plays eight games, facing two clubs from each pot, one at home and one away.

The top eight at the end of the league phase -- which runs until the end of January -- will advance to the last 16, while the teams finishing from ninth to 24th will advance to a play-off round to decide the remaining last-16 spots.

The bottom 12 in the league phase will be eliminated, with no clubs dropping down into the Conference League ahead of the knockouts, and no teams parachuting down from the Champions League as in the past.
