Former Manchester City and England goalkeeper Joe Hart&nbsp;said he wants to "smash through the finishing line" with Celtic as he announced Thursday he was retiring at the end of the season.

Hart will be 37 when his three-year contract with the Scottish Premiership champions expires.

He won 75 England caps and played 348 times for Manchester City, winning two Premier League titles.

Hart helped Celtic win five out of six domestic trophies in the past two seasons under Ange Postecoglou, who is now managing Tottenham.

Celtic trail rivals Rangers by two points in the Premiership and the goalkeeper, who joined the club from Tottenham in 2021, promised fans he remains up for the fight.

"Mentally I'm in that one place that I like to be, I'm in a place of clarity," he told Celtic TV. "Obviously, I've thought about this a lot.

"I think the right time is now. I've got the clarity of mind that I was able to go to the club and explain my position and them totally understand."

He added: "I am aware time waits for no man and I don't want my body to be retiring me. That was one of the key factors, thinking I can smash through the finish line."

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers praised Hart's "phenomenal career".

"For all he has done in football, Joe deserves huge praise and congratulations," he said in a club statement.

"He has been such a brilliant asset to Celtic of course and the wider game at the highest levels, domestically and internationally.

"But more than that, he is a tremendous man, just brilliant to work with."

Football: Former England goalkeeper Joe Hart to retire at end of season

Liverpool earned a crucial 3-1 win against relegation-threatened Burnley on Saturday to return to the Premier League summit after being briefly unseated by champions Manchester City.

The Anfield side are hunting a record-equalling 20th English top-flight title in Jurgen Klopp's final season in charge but once again have relentless City for company at the top of the table.

Liverpool, beaten by title rivals Arsenal last week, were not at their fluent best but did enough to get over the line against Vincent Kompany's men, who remain seven points from safety.

City, who beat Everton 2-0 at home in the early kick-off, are two points behind Liverpool with a game in hand as they chase an unprecedented fourth consecutive English top-flight title.

The Reds were gifted the lead when Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford came for a Trent Alexander-Arnold corner but missed the ball and Diogo Jota headed into an empty net for his ninth Premier League goal of the season.

But they were pegged back minutes before half-time when Dara O'Shea's bullet header from a corner gave Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher no chance.

Liverpool were a different proposition in the second half and Luis Diaz put them back in front in the 52nd minute with a header from close range.

David Datro Fofana squandered clear chances to equalise for the visitors -- Kelleher saved well from the forward minutes before Fofana curled wide of the post.

The home fans breathed a huge side of relief when Darwin Nunez headed in Harvey Elliott's fine cross in the 79th minute to open up a two-goal lead, which ultimately proved enough to secure the three points.

Liverpool returns to Premier League summit with 3-1 win over Burnley

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola said he will "sleep a bit better" after his "biggest rival" Jurgen Klopp rocked the football world with his shock decision to leave Liverpool at the end of this season.

Klopp stunned Premier League leaders Liverpool on Friday when he revealed he will step down once the current campaign is over.

The Reds boss has been Guardiola's main competitor for domestic silverware during their time in England.

While Guardiola has largely come out on top in the trophy stakes during City's dynastic era, the Spaniard is well aware of the threat posed by Klopp and his team.

Paying tribute to the German after City's 1-0 win at Tottenham in the FA Cup fourth round on Friday, Guardiola said: "He's an absolutely incredible manager, I don't know him closely but I think he's an incredible person as well.

"I have the feeling that when he leaves at the end of the season, part of us at Manchester City is leaving too. They have been our biggest rival, Liverpool in the last years."

Klopp said he was leaving Liverpool because he no longer has the energy required to manage such a high-profile club after nine years at Anfield.

Although the two have never been close friends during their spell in England, their mutual respect is clear.

Guardiola, 53, can empathise with the 56-year-old over his decision after he walked out on Barcelona for similar reasons in 2012.

"All the managers will (feel tired) when you've done many years, I feel it completely. I felt it at Barcelona so I understand it completely," he said.

Although City have won the last three Premier League titles, their reign is under threat from Klopp again this term.

Liverpool currently sit five points clear of second placed City, who have a game in hand.

The prospect of eventually playing a Liverpool team not managed by Klopp -- one of the few coaches who can match Guardiola's intense competitiveness -- is a pleasant thought for the City boss.

Their last showdown in the Premier League will come on March 9 when City visit Anfield for a crucial clash in the title race.

"He's been my biggest rival so I think he will be missed," he said.

"I am a little bit pleased because without him I will sleep a little bit better the night before we play against Liverpool but I wish him all the best. He doesn't admit but he will be back."

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin has insisted that the European governing body was "right" to kick Manchester City out of the Champions League for breaching financial regulations. City were suspended by UEFA in February 2020 when the club violated Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations and were likely to face a two-year suspension. However, a successful appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in July of that year saw the ban being lifted.

"And, sometimes, you lose a case when you're sure... You have to respect the decision of the court. I don't want to speak about the case in England. But I trust that the decision of our independent body was correct."

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin insists it was ‘right’ to kick Manchester City out of Champions League

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland will be sidelined until the end of January due to a foot injury, manager Pep Guardiola said.

City play Newcastle United in the Premier League later on Saturday, visit Tottenham Hotspur in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Jan. 26 before hosting Burnley in the league on Jan. 31.

Guardiola said he expects the 23-year-old Norwegian to return to training during their camp in Abu Dhabi next week.

"It's the bone. It needs time," Guardiola told reporters ahead of the trip to St. James' Park.

"It's fine, but the doctors decided to stop for one week and maybe restart in Abu Dhabi. Hopefully, at the end of this month, he'll be ready. It was a little bit more than we expected in the beginning."

Haaland, the joint top scorer in the Premier League alongside Liverpool's Mohamed Salah with 14 goals, has missed City's last eight games in all competitions.

"We need him," Guardiola said. "Hopefully he can come back and play the last four or five months without a problem."

The City manager also said Swiss defender Manuel Akanji would be out of action until the end of the month but did have some positive news on Kevin De Bruyne, with the Belgian set to return to the starting 11.

The 32-year-old, who suffered a hamstring injury on the first day of the season against Burnley, came on as a substitute in the FA Cup win over Huddersfield last weekend.

Guardiola gave a positive response when asked if the midfielder could start at Newcastle.

"Yes. From what I saw yesterday I feel really good, he was dynamic, and the minutes he played was better than the training sessions before the Huddersfield game.

"He is getting better now, he will have a few days off after this game and can train in Abu Dhabi to be better for the next few months," he added.

City are third, five points behind leaders Liverpool, but Guardiola's side have a game in hand and the manager still believes they can win a fourth consecutive league title.

"How many points left? 18 or 19 games ... so obviously mathematically possible," the manager said.

Newcastle are ninth, 11 points behind City, and come into the game on the back of three consecutive league defeats.

Blow to Manchester City as Erling Haaland out until January end, confirms Pep Guardiola

Phil Foden scored twice as holders Manchester City cruised into the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 5-0 win over Huddersfield Town on Sunday, with playmaker Kevin De Bruyne making a welcome return after four months out with a hamstring injury.

Fielding a strong side, City suffered a setback when they lost defender Manuel Akanji to injury early in the first half, but Foden's superb finishing and De Bruyne's comeback gave coach Pep Guardiola plenty to be happy about.

Huddersfield, who are hovering just above the relegation zone in England's second-tier Championship, fell behind in the 33rd minute when Foden rifled the ball into the net from a tight angle, and striker Julian Alvarez poked home a second four minutes later.

De Bruyne entered the fray in the 57th minute and City added their third a minute later as Norwegian winger Oscar Bobb tried to pick out the Belgian at the far post, only to see his deflected cross loop into the net to make it 3-0.

Foden added his second with a precise shot from the edge of the area in the 65th minute, and nine minutes later De Bruyne teed up fellow substitute Jeremy Doku to complete the rout.

"We are incredibly delighted to have him back, because Kevin helps to win games. It is so important to have him back after a long injury," Guardiola told the BBC. "He will help us with his talent but I don't want to put all the pressure on Kevin's shoulders because it is not fair to him ... he had a really good assist for the Jeremy Doku goal," he added.

Goalscorer Foden gave credit to Huddersfield for making it difficult, but ultimately City's class told.

"We seem to come against a low block quite often - we know what to expect, we just need to be patient, find the spaces and keep switching and hopefully they’ll open up and get tired," he said.

Elsewhere, City's Premier League rivals struggled as the lower-tier clubs made their presence felt in the cup competition to force some potentially lucrative replays.

Luton Town played out a scoreless draw at home against Bolton Wanderers, and Nottingham Forest were held to a 2-2 draw at the City Ground by Blackpool, with West Ham United and Bristol City ending in a 1-1 stalemate.

Leeds United had no such problems as striker Patrick Bamford netted a brilliant volley in a 3-0 hammering of Peterborough United, and West Bromwich Albion cruised to a 4-1 win at home to Aldershot Town.

FA Cup: Foden’s brace steers Manchester City in round 4 with easy win over Huddersfield Town

Manchester United's miserable season hit a new low as they crashed to a dismal 2-1 defeat at Premier League strugglers Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

Erik ten Hag's side produced a wretched display that was punished by Morgan Gibbs-White's late winner at the City Ground.

Nicolas Dominguez had put Forest ahead in the second half before Marcus Rashford equalised with just his third goal of a woeful campaign.

United's fourth loss in their last six games in all competitions left them languishing in seventh place in the Premier League, nine points adrift of the top four.

United's stirring fightback from two goals down to beat Aston Villa 3-2 on Tuesday had been heralded as the start of a new era just days after Jim Ratcliffe's investment in the troubled club.

British billionaire Ratcliffe purchased a 25 percent stake in United for around £1.03 billion ($1.3 billion) on Christmas Eve.

Ratcliffe's INEOS Group will take control of United's football operations from unpopular owners the Glazer family.

But despite Ten Hag's claim on Friday that Ratcliffe wants to work with him, this was the latest evidence that the new regime might consider dismissing the beleaguered Dutchman.

INEOS's head of sport Dave Brailsford was watching alongside the club's former boss Alex Ferguson at the City Ground as United were beaten by Forest for the first time since 1994.

Ten Hag will have to oversee a significant improvement in United's results and performances to avoid the axe.

Forest moved five points clear of the relegation zone after Nuno Espirito Santo masterminded his second successive high-profile victory.

Nuno's first win as Forest boss after replacing the sacked Steve Cooper came against Newcastle, but this was an even bigger scalp.

<h2>Turgid United</h2>

After their slow start against Villa, Ten Hag's men once again laboured to find any rhythm as passes went astray with alarming regularity.

Forest had conceded more goals than any other Premier League team in 2023, but it took 32 minutes for United to muster their first shot.

Even then, Aaron Wan-Bissaka's deflected effort trickled tamely to Forest keeper Matt Turner.

Ten Hag's furrowed brow as he stood glumly on the touchline painted a vivid picture of United's struggles.

Elanga was allowed to leave United in the close-season, while the underachieving Antony, hand-picked by Ten Hag from his old club Ajax, remains in the team.

However, it was Elanga, playing with a point to prove, who looked the more dynamic force and it was no surprise when Antony was hauled off after 53 minutes, leaving the Brazilian without a goal or assist in 21 appearances.

United striker Rasmus Hojlund, who scored his first Premier League goal to seal the Villa victory, was sidelined due to illness.

Rashford, playing as United's central striker in Hojlund's absence, might have ended up on the scoresheet, but he hardly looked convincing in the role.

Diogo Dalot fired against the post from 25 yards as United finally pieced together an incisive attack.

But United's turgid display got what it deserved in the 64th minute when Gonzalo Montiel's pass picked out Dominguez and he slotted a cool finish past Andre Onana from 12 yards.

As Forest fans serenaded Ten Hag with chants of "you're getting sacked in the morning", United's Alejandro Garnacho looped a half-volley onto the roof of the net from Bruno Fernandes' corner.

Turner gifted United an equaliser with 12 minutes left when his woeful pass was intercepted by Garnacho, who teed up Rashford to fire past the red-faced keeper from 10 yards.

But even that belated Christmas present wasn't enough to save United, who combusted again in the 82nd minute.

Undone by sloppy marking as Elanga provided the assist, United stood statuesque as Gibbs-White curled a superb strike past Onana from the edge of the area.

Making amends for his earlier mistake, Turner saved from Fernandes in stoppage-time to leave United in turmoil.

ALSO READ | Australia women beat India by three runs in second ODI to take unassailable lead in three-match series Turgid United After their slow start against Villa, Ten Hag's men once again laboured to find any rhythm as passes went astray with alarming regularity.

Members of Grealish's family and his fiancee Sasha Atwood were watching the televised match at the house when they heard a disturbance, according to reports on Friday.

An alarm was raised and an emergency response was launched with a helicopter, police dogs and a number of officers sent to the property, but no suspects were detected.

"The caller reported that a number of items had been stolen.

"Officers, supported by the police dogs and NPAS (National Police Air Service), were deployed and searches were conducted in the local area, but there was no trace of the suspects.

Jack Grealish's family unhurt in home robbery, Pep Guardiola confirms

Manchester City won the Club World Cup for the first time to end 2023 with five trophies after a 4-0 win over Fluminense in Jeddah on Friday.

City's victory extended European clubs' domination of the competition since 2012 and was never in doubt once Julian Alvarez opened the scoring inside the first minute.

Nino's first-half own goal realistically ended the Brazilians' dreams of an upset, before Phil Foden and Alvarez rounded off the scoring in the final 20 minutes.

After clinching the treble of the club's first ever Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup last season, City also lifted the UEFA Super Cup for the first time in August.

Pep Guardiola also made history as the first coach to lift the Club World Cup on four occasions and with three different clubs after previously winning the competition twice at Barcelona and once in charge of Bayern Munich.

"To win the treble was truly special, but to win two more trophies and now hold these five major titles shows the unique mentality of this team," said Guardiola.

"As a manager it is what I am most proud of: that we are always there. No matter how much we win, no matter what trophies we lift, we are there again to fight for the next one."

City's poor Premier League form before flying out to Saudi Arabia had raised Fluminense hopes that Guardiola's men could be vulnerable.

But the growing chasm between Europe's elite clubs and the rest of the world thanks to huge financial imbalances in the global game was instead exposed.

European clubs have won 22 consecutive games at the Club World Cup.

City laboured for 45 minutes to break down Japan's Urawa Reds in the semi-final before cruising to a 3-0 win.

Alvarez scored the fastest goal ever in a Club World Cup final as he chested into an unguarded net after Nathan Ake's shot came back off the post.

At just 23, the Argentine added to his remarkable haul of silverware that includes the World Cup and Copa America at international level, the Copa Libertadores during his time at River Plate, plus Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and UEFA Super Cup medals during just over a year at City.

<h2>- Rodri injury worry -</h2>

Fluminense were then dealt the killer blow when captain Nino turned Foden's cross into his own net after Rodri's pass opened up the Brazilian defence.

Ederson was called into action to maintain City's two-goal lead before the break as the Brazilian international made a stunning save from Jhon Arias' header.

But his opposite number Fabio was the busier goalkeeper. The 37-year-old kept the score down and saved Fluminense's blushes.

Fabio turned Jack Grealish's fiercely struck effort behind before half-time and twice denied Foden early in the second half.

City were able to coast through the second period to end a glorious year on a high, but victory could come at a cost.

Rodri was forced off with an injury 20 minutes from time. City have lost all three Premier League games this season when the influential Spanish midfielder has been absent and they travel to in-form Everton on December 27.

However, that did not take the shine off a marquee 12 months that marks the high-point in a trophy-laden 15 years since City's fortunes were transformed by a takeover from Abu Dhabi's Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Alvarez was the creator for City's third as Foden slid in to meet his driven cross.

And the man deputising for the injured Erling Haaland rounded off the scoring two minutes from time with his 10th goal of the season.

Football: Manchester City win maiden FIFA Club World Cup

Manchester City have been fined £120,000 ($152,000) after their players surrounded referee Simon Hooper in the closing moments of their 3-3 draw with Tottenham earlier this month.

Hooper made the contentious call to bring play back after he initially played advantage following Emerson Royal's mistimed challenge on Erling Haaland.

Haaland was able to get back to his feet and produce a through ball which sent Jack Grealish away, but Hooper blew his whistle to end a promising attack.

Premier League: Manchester City fined for chaos during Tottenham Hotspur game

Manchester City threw away a 2-0 lead at home against Crystal Palace on Saturday as the Bournemouth v Luton game was abandoned after defender Tom Lockyer collapsed on the pitch.

Pep Guardiola's champions dominated their match at the Etihad but two late goals from Roy Hodgson's men, including a stoppage-time penalty, could have a major impact on the title race.&nbsp;

Crystal Palace have been something of a bogey team for Guardiola since he arrived in England in 2016 -- they are one of only three teams to have won at the Etihad more than once, along with Manchester United and Chelsea.

The champions enjoyed nearly three-quarters of possession in the first half but had only Jack Grealish's goal to show for their dominance.

The England winger scored for the third league game in a row, sweeping home after being found by Phil Foden in the 24th minute.

City had the ball in the net again early in the second half after Julian Alvarez's free-kick found the net but the goal was ruled out, with Rodri deemed to be in an offside position.

However, moments later the home side did extend their lead, when Rico Lewis thumped the ball into the bottom left corner.

City seemed destined to move to within one point of Premier League leaders Liverpool but instead they collapsed in dramatic fashion.

The away side scored against the run of play to give themselves hope in the 76th minute when Jeffrey Schlupp shrugged off the attentions of the City defence and crossed for Jean-Philippe Mateta&nbsp;to poke home.

City fans faced a nervous last quarter of an hour and watched in horror when referee Paul Tierney pointed to the spot after Foden fouled Mateta.

Michael Olise made no mistake, slotting home in the 95th minute and boos rang around the Etihad at the final whistle.

<h2>Game abandoned</h2>

Struggling Luton took the lead against in-form Bournemouth when Elijah Adebayo&nbsp;rose highest to head home a corner in the third minute but Dominic Solanke levelled just before the hour mark.&nbsp;

But the game was halted midway through the second half as Luton's Lockyer received medical treatment after collapsing off the ball.

The defender, who also collapsed during the play-off final win against Coventry in May before undergoing heart surgery, was removed from the pitch on a stretcher surrounded by the medical team, and there was a standing ovation from the crowd.

After the players were taken off, the Premier League confirmed the match had been abandoned.

"The Premier League match between AFC Bournemouth and Luton Town FC has been abandoned due to a player medical incident," said a statement from the English top flight.

"Our thoughts are with Tom Lockyer and all players involved in today's match."

Chelsea returned to winning ways at Stamford Bridge against bottom club Sheffield United, winning 2-0.

It was just their third Premier League home win in a tough season for the injury-ravaged team.

Newcastle claimed all three points at their St James' Park stronghold after two consecutive league defeats.

Premier League: Man City squander lead vs Crystal Palace; Newcastle, Chelsea win

Pep Guardiola will consider a potential move to replace Kalvin Phillips if the England midfielder leaves Manchester City in January.

Phillips has been strongly linked with a transfer window switch away from the Etihad Stadium after a troubled spell with the Premier League champions. The 28-year-old has failed to force his way into Guardiola's side in the 18 months since his move from Leeds.

And while Guardiola insisted that he was not thinking about the January market on Friday, that might change if he is left short of numbers in midfield by a possible Phillips transfer.

"Right now, I don't have anything in my mind. It depends if they leave or don't leave," Guardiola told reporters ahead of Saturday's game against Crystal Palace.

"Some players stay, some players leave. It depends on the squad; it depends on young players and if you can rely on them or not in some moments."

Guardiola appeared to effectively confirm Phillips would not be able to salvage his City career last week, saying: "I visualise the team and I struggle a little bit to see him (in it)."

Phillips did score in a rare start for City in midweek, netting a penalty in their 3-2 Champions League group stage win at Red Star Belgrade.

But that was a dead rubber for City, who had already qualified for the last 16, and Phillips is likely to return to the bench this weekend.

"Kalvin is a player with us, I don't want to anticipate absolutely anything. Everyone knows the situation he has," Guardiola said.

"It depends if it happens. If it happens, we talk. The market in January is not easy. We still have incredible things to play for, and after we decide."

Pep Guardiola mulls potential move to replace outgoing Kalvin Phillips at Manchester City

Premier League giants Manchester City had a stellar year in 2023 after they clinched a historic treble in June. Masterminded by the excellent Pep Guardiola, City won the Premier League and FA Cup and rounded off the treble with their maiden Champions League title win in Istanbul. The historic treble-winning run included a series of big wins in the Champions League and the Premier League. So how did Manchester City claim the big prize and who were the architects of the treble?

<h2>Premier League run</h2>

Arsenal gave City a good run in the Premier League title race and led the table until April before Pep’s side produced their ‘A-game’. City went on a 15-match unbeaten run in the Premier League after their February defeat to Tottenham Hotspur which saw them turn the screws in the race against Arsenal. The Gunners also faltered at the wrong end and surrendered the title to City after their away defeat to Nottingham Forest on May 20.

City eventually finished the season five points clear of Arsenal on 89 points. They registered 28 wins and five draws on their way to their third consecutive title in the top flight. City’s remarkable home runs saw them lose only once on their home turf in the Premier League season while scoring 94 goals in the process.

<h2>FA Cup triumph</h2>

Pep’s side had a tough start to their FA Cup campaign in January and were paired up with Arsenal in their third round contest. However, a dominating 4-0 defeat saw them book their next round tie with Chelsea. Both the ties were played at City’s home as they later got the better of Chelsea 1-0. City’s only away tie in the competition came against Bristol where they won 3-0 and followed that with an impressive 6-0 and 3-0 wins against then-Championship high-flyers Burnley and Sheffield United respectively.

Manchester United stood in City’s way in the final where Pep again showcased his class in a 2-1 win at Wembley Stadium.

<h2>Champions League glory in Istanbul</h2>

Having overseen a tough group stage campaign, City played German giants RB Leipzig in the R16 and smashed them 7-0 in the second leg in Manchester having earlier been held to a 1-1 draw. It was a tough prospect for Pep’s team in the draws for the final as they were on the same side as Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Chelsea. However, City got the better of Bayern 4-1 on aggregate while exacting revenge on Real Madrid for 2022 loss with a 5-1 aggregate win to advance to the final.

In a night full of drama in the Champions League final, City showcased their class and prevailed 1-0 as they beat Inter Milan. City remained unbeaten in the entire Champions League season and repeated the historic treble in English football after 24 years, with arch-rivals Manchester United being the first team to achieve the feat.

Erling Haaland was the top scorer for the club with 52 goals in 53 matches in all competitions while also breaking the Premier League record for most goals. The Norwegian scored 36 goals in 35 Premier League matches for the club.

Premier League run Arsenal gave City a good run in the Premier League title race and led the table until April before Pep’s side produced their ‘A-game’. FA Cup triumph Pep’s side had a tough start to their FA Cup campaign in January and were paired up with Arsenal in their third round contest.

Rewind 2023: Pep Guardiola masterminds Manchester City's historic treble winning campaign

Bernardo Silva and Jack Grealish scored three minutes apart as Manchester City came from behind to beat Premier League newcomers Luton Town 2-1 on Sunday and breathe a collective sigh of relief with their first victory in five league games.

The win kept the champions -- who were missing striker Erling Haaland through injury -- in fourth place on 33 points, four shy of leaders Liverpool in a crowded title fight. Luton remain in the drop zone on nine points, four adrift of 17th place.

The home fans were celebrating at halftime at a raucous Kenilworth Road after Elijah Adebayo rose to meet a cross from Andros Townsend and headed in the opener seconds before the break.

But after numerous City near-misses, Silva scored in the 62nd minute when he curled a low left-footed strike into the far corner past goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski.

Grealish netted his 50th career goal three minutes later when Julian Alvarez sent a cross across the face of the goal that the 28-year-old stretched to slot in.

"We knew we had to keep calm today and buzzing to get back to winning ways," Grealish told Sky Sports. "I think a lot of people like to talk about City and go on like it's a big crisis; in reality we've played very good teams -- Spurs who've been unbelievable, Liverpool who are top, Chelsea and Villa away, who've got one of the best records in Europe."

City arrived at Luton reeling from three draws and a midweek defeat by Aston Villa that saw last season's treble winners plummet to fourth having topped the standings a month ago.

A lengthy loss of Haaland, who has what manager Pep Guardiola called a "stress reaction" in his foot, could be devastating for City's bid to retain their title.

For much of Sunday's match, Luton, whose rags-to-riches story saw them climb from non-league football to the Premier League in nine years, appeared poised to inflict more misery on the Manchester giants.

Luton ran out of steam in the second half in another solid performance for the Hatters, who held leaders Liverpool to a 1-1 draw at infamous Kenilworth this season while Arsenal needed an added-time winner to seal three points there.

City had 18 shots to Luton's four but they either went wide or they were stopped by Kaminski before Silva ended the drought. Kaminski made some terrific saves for the home side, particularly a diving stop on Phil Foden's low hard shot in the first half.

PL: Haaland-less Manchester City return to winning ways with victory over Luton Town

Aston Villa dealt a major blow to Manchester City's Premier League title challenge as Leon Bailey clinched a 1-0 win against the reeling champions on Wednesday. Bailey's deflected second-half strike at Villa Park moved Unai Emery's side above spluttering City into third place.

Pep Guardiola's fourth-placed team have gone four league games without a win and sit six points behind leaders Arsenal. After draws with Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham, the treble winners desperately needed to beat Villa to keep in touch with the Gunners.

Instead, they produced their worst performance of the damaging run and could easily have lost by more than one goal. City looked weary for long periods but with a trip to Saudi Arabia for the FIFA Club World Cup looming before the hectic Christmas schedule, there is little respite in sight.

Reacting to questions this week about City's blip, Guardiola boldly proclaimed his team will definitely retain the Premier League title. The City boss won't be panicking yet, after all they erased an eight-point gap to overhaul Arsenal in the closing weeks of last season's title race.

But this was a major setback to their hopes of an unprecedented fourth successive Premier League crown. "Aston Villa were better. They played a fantastic game, we struggled to make our process and be more aggressive," Guardiola said. "The fact we didn't win the last few games, that's the quality of the Premier League. We know what's our level. We're struggling a bit. I'm here to help them."

Villa's 14th consecutive home league victory provided more evidence of the remarkable job done by Emery since he replaced the sacked Steven Gerrard last season. Emery's team look genuine top-four contenders and Saturday's visit from Arsenal gives their manager, sacked by the Gunners in 2019, a chance to prove a point to his old club, who are only four points above them.

"We did a fantastic match. When you are playing Manchester City you have to get your moments and try to control the game. We created chances but it was very tough," Emery said after his first win over Guardiola at the 14th attempt.

<h2>- Shell-shocked City -</h2>

City had conceded 10 goals in their previous four games, so Guardiola shuffled his midfield, selecting John Stones, making his first appearance since November after a muscle injury, and youngster Rico Lewis in a line-up featuring six natural defenders.

Despite the defensive reinforcements, City were repeatedly carved open with alarming ease. City have often struggled whenever the influential Rodri has been absent over the last year and the Spain midfielder's suspension again seemed to unsettle the champions, who have lost all four games without him this season.

Guardiola wore a worried look on the touchline after John McGinn's sublime pass sent Bailey racing into the area for a shot that Ederson palmed away. Ederson was called into action again moments later as he leapt to his right to tip over Pau Torres's long-range curler.

City needed a goal to settle their nerves and Erling Haaland should have delivered it. Surging into the Villa area, Haaland's drive was saved by Emiliano Martinez, who scrambled to his feet to make another fine stop when the City striker rose to head Bernardo Silva's cross goalwards seconds later.

But without the suspended Jack Grealish and injured Jeremy Doku, City were impotent for the rest of the game as Villa took control. McGinn wasted a glorious opportunity for Villa midway through the second half when the midfielder cut inside Ruben Dias, but screwed his shot wide with just Ederson to beat.

Villa finally made the breakthrough their performance deserved in the 74th minute. Bailey accelerated away from Josko Gvardiol to the edge of the area, where his shot took a hefty deflection off Dias as it fizzed past the wrong-footed Ederson. It could have been even worse for City as Douglas Luiz's strike hit the woodwork on a worrying evening for the shell-shocked champions.

Manchester City charged for failing to control players' behaviour in Tottenham game; Haaland escapes penalty

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland may face a sanction for criticising officials for a controversial call during the Premier League game against Tottenham Hotspur. The game ended in a 3-3 draw after the referee stopped it in injury time when City seemingly had a chance to score and win.&nbsp;

City were leading 3-2 before Dejan Kulusevski scored an equaliser in the 90th minute for Tottenham. Five minutes into the stoppage time, Haaland was fouled by opposition defender Emerson Royal but the striker got up on his feet and continued. Referee Simon Hooper kept the game going but stopped when Haaland passed the ball to Jack Grealish who had a clear run to goal.

Arsenal are back on top of the Premier League with ambitions to stay there as they host Wolves this weekend while champions Manchester City play faltering Tottenham. Newcastle take on Manchester United in a clash of two teams with high ambitions of their own while Chelsea face Brighton, still searching for consistency.

Here's&nbsp;three talking points ahead of the action, as per AFP Sport.

<h2>Can Arsenal mix style with substance?</h2>

Arsenal's last-gasp 1-0 win at Brentford last week, which took them back to the top of table, was their fifth Premier League victory by a single goal this season. The Gunners lack the fluidity they showed in the 2022/23 campaign and attacking numbers are down but former Manchester United defender Gary Neville believes they are now better equipped to win the league.

"Perfect, pretty football is unlikely to win the league unless it's combined with a doggedness and resilience," he said on X, formerly known as Twitter.&nbsp;"Arsenal are better this year in these areas and the football will come in due course."

But former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, a Sky Sports pundit alongside Neville, believes Mikel Arteta's team need to win games more convincingly. "If Arsenal continue how they are, if this is the Arsenal we're going to see this season, I don't think they can win the league," he told Sky.

He added: "So many games are going to the wire and sometimes that can go against you.... Those games that finish 1-0 can easily go 1-0 the other way." Arsenal smashed Lens 6-0 in the Champions League in midweek in a reminder of what can happen when everything clicks.

<h2>Tottenham face daunting Man City trip</h2>

Early pacesetters Tottenham desperately need to arrest their slide after three straight defeats but champions Manchester City are their next port of call. Ange Postecoglou's team, unbeaten in their first 10 games, have developed the costly habit of letting leads slip -- losing to Chelsea, Wolves and Aston Villa despite scoring first each time.

Postecoglou is grappling with a lengthy list of absentees and suffered another blow with the loss of midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur, expected to be out until February after suffering a serious ankle injury against Villa.

City last week showed a chink in their armour, failing to win at home in any competition for the first time this year when they were held 1-1 by Liverpool.

But Erling Haaland notched his 50th Premier League goal in just his 48th game at the Etihad -- obliterating Andy Cole's record -- and this week became the quickest player to 40 Champions League goals with his strike against RB Leipzig.

City will be confident normal order can be resumed at home.

<h2>Newcastle bank on home form against Man Utd</h2>

Newcastle v Manchester United pits a team with one of the best home records against a side who have been picking up wins on the road. Despite a long injury list, Newcastle have won six of their seven Premier League games at their St James' Park stronghold this season.

Erik ten Hag's Manchester United, despite their patchy form overall, have four victories out of six games away from home. Both teams have ambitions of qualifying for season's Champions League and they each face a battle to qualify for the knockout phase of this year's competition after midweek draws.

Newcastle, who recently hammered Manchester United 3-0 in the League Cup, will fancy their chances against a team who, while they have started to score more freely, remain vulnerable at the back.

United have conceded 33 goals in all competitions this season, the most in their opening 20 matches of any campaign since 1962/63.

<h2>Liverpool seek to end Man City run</h2>

Liverpool have been the only team to consistently challenge Manchester City in recent years, winning 10 out of 23 matches in all competitions under the reign of Jurgen Klopp. The two sides had epic battles in the 2018/19&nbsp;and&nbsp;2021/22 seasons, when&nbsp;City&nbsp;pipped their rivals by just a single point on both occasions, while the Reds clinched their first league title in 30 years in 2020.

But Liverpool, revitalised after a below-par campaign last season, have not won a league game at the Etihad since their 4-1 demolition of City in November 2015. The reigning champions, by contrast, have won 23 matches in a row at home in all competitions.

Erling Haaland is one goal away from obliterating the Premier League record for the quickest player to 50 goals -- the Norwegian scored twice in City's frantic 4-4 draw at Chelsea earlier this month to take his tally to 49 goals in just 47 appearances. Former Newcastle and Manchester United forward Andrew Cole is the current record holder, reaching the landmark in 65 games.

<h2>Will 10-point penalty fire up Everton?</h2>

Sean Dyche's Everton had turned the corner in recent weeks, winning three of their past five games to pull well clear of the relegation zone.

But last week's 10-point deduction for breaching Premier League profitability and sustainability rules means they go into their match against Manchester United level on four points with bottom club Burnley. Everton director of football Kevin Thelwell said the team would now have added motivation, fuelled by a burning sense of injustice at the "wholly disproportionate ruling".

Despite the sanction, the nine-time English champions are just two points from safety, thanks to the poor form of the newly promoted teams. United have climbed to sixth in the table after winning four of their past five league games but they are blunt in attack and remain unconvincing at the back.&nbsp;

<h2>Spurs seek to stop rot against in-form Villa</h2>

Tottenham boss Ange&nbsp;Postecoglou&nbsp;made the best start to a season by a new manager in Premier League history after 10 games but the team has dropped off top spot due to consecutive defeats. Spurs were beaten 4-1 by Chelsea after being reduced to nine men and then lost 2-1 at Wolves in a game in which they were leading going into stoppage time.

One headache Postecoglou must deal with is the absence of playmaker James Maddison, who has made such an impact since arriving in June but has been ruled out until the New Year with an ankle injury. Postecoglou will be wary of Aston Villa, who have continued their rapid progress under Unai Emery and are just a point behind fourth-placed Spurs and three points off the top.

The Birmingham club's 3-1 win against Fulham earlier this month was a 13th successive home win -- a feat they last achieved 40 years ago. But their away form is less impressive, with just two wins from six games on the road.

Premier League Preview: Liverpool face Manchester City in litmus test; Everton host Manchester United

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland is now the fastest player to score 50 goals in Premier League history, reaching the milestone in his 48th game. He comfortably went past Andrew Cole's 65 games record for the top spot. Haaland scored the goal during the match against Liverpool on November 25 to reach the landmark.

The list of players among the fastest to score 50 Premier League goals includes Alan Shearer who reached the landmark in 66 games, Ruud van Nistelrooy in 68 games, Fernando Torres and Mohamed Salah, both in 72 games.

The 23-year-old was always on the path to break the record ever since he joined Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund last season. In his maiden season he scored 36 goals - also a record for most goals in debut Premier League season.&nbsp;

Haaland's performance last season also helped the City complete the famous treble of the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League as well.

In the current season, Haaland has played 20 games in all competitions and the goal against Liverpool was his 18th this year. In the Premier League, the striker has 14 goals to his name in 13 appearance so far.

The match against Liverpool, however, ended in a 1-1 draw and ended City's victory run at home. Haaland's goal in the 27th minute gave City the lead which continued for most part of the game. In 80th minute though, Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold scored the equaliser and the scorecard remained undisturbed after that.

With the draw, Manchester City are now second on the points table with 29 points after 13 games with nine wins, two losses and two draws. Arsenal replaced them for the top position after they won their game against Brentford 1-0 on November 25 and took their points tally to 30 - one more than the City in same number of games.

Liverpool, on the other hand, are third on the points table - one point less than City's 29 in same 13 games.

Manchester City's Erling Haaland becomes fastest to score 50 goals in Premier League during draw vs Liverpool

Erling Haaland scored twice as holders Manchester City cruised into the last 16 of the Champions League with two group games remaining after a 3-0 victory over Swiss side Young Boys on Tuesday. Pep Guardiola's side maintained their 100% record and lead Group G with 12 points from four games. Young Boys, who were reduced to 10 men when Sandro Lauper was shown a red card in the 53rd minute, are fourth in the group with one point.

"Still the job is not done because we have to finish first because it's better in the last-16 to have the weapon of the second game at home," Guardiola said. "But the first step to qualify is done, (and) we scored two fantastic goals."

Haaland now has 39 Champions League goals from 34 appearances, and is on course to smash the record for fewest appearances to reach 40 goals, which is 45 games by Ruud van Nistelrooy. The 23-year-old injured his ankle in Saturday's 6-1 trouncing of Bournemouth in the Premier League, raising questions about whether he would even play on Tuesday.

The one negative on the night was the loss of John Stones, who recently returned from a hip injury but was replaced at halftime after suffering what Guardiola said was a muscle issue. "He will be awhile out, it's a pity, it's bad news for us," Guardiola said.

City applied pressure from kickoff and Haaland broke the deadlock from a penalty in the 23rd minute after Lauper's tackle on Matheus Nunes in the box. The Norwegian striker pumped a fist in the air after sending goalkeeper Anthony Racioppi the wrong way.

Phil Foden doubled City's lead seconds before halftime when Jack Grealish spotted him out wide. The England midfielder cut into the box and beat Racioppi with a low shot. Haaland's second goal - and fourth in two games against Young Boys - was a beautiful left-footed rocket from 20 yards out in the 51st minute.

Haaland, who had traded shirts with Young Boys captain Mohamed Ali Camara as they walked off the field at halftime, was substituted to a standing ovation from the home crowd a few minutes after his goal. The score could have been more lopsided as City had numerous near misses including Rico Lewis's attempt that looked destined for the net before it was cleared off the line by Loris Benito.

Belgian forward Jeremy Doku sent in a pinpoint cross after coming on late in the game, but Nunes could not finish. "We knew it's very difficult here, to get a point or a win, you need to have the kind of a game, the perfect game in every phase of the game," Young Boys manager Raphael Wicky said.

City are unbeaten in their last 17 Champions League games since losing 3-1 away to Real Madrid in the semi-finals in May 2022. "To qualify with two games to spare, that is what we wanted to do," Grealish told TNT Sports. "He (Guardiola) gives us so much. In my opinion, he is the best manager in the world. He has shown that over the years. But you can have the best manager in the world, you also need the team. "And that is what we have, a brilliant team on the pitch but also off the pitch we have a brilliant team that is so close. We love being with each other every day and playing with each other."

City host RB Leipzig on Nov. 28 and then cap the group stage with a visit to Red Star Belgrade on Dec. 13.

Football: Erling Haaland scores twice as Manchester City clinch a place in Champions League last 16

After an exhilarating night in the Premier League on Monday (Nov 7) the Champions League is all set to take centre stage as clubs eye place in the Round of 16. The night will feature defending Champions Manchester City in action who will eye a place in the knockouts while the likes of Barcelona and PSG will also take to the field in the continental tournament. Newcastle United will look to bounce back from their defeat to Borussia Dortmund as they travel to Germany for the return leg.

<h2>Man City eye R16</h2>

The defending champions could become the first team to book their berth in the last 16 when they take on Swiss side Young Boys at the Etihad Stadium. They have so far won all their matches in the Champions League, registering a 3-1 win in Zurich. They beat Bournemouth over the weekend in the Premier League with Jeremy Doku getting four assists and a goal. Along with Young Boys, if RB Leipzig beat Red Star Belgrade Group G could be settled.

Barcelona on the other hand will look to end their frustrating run of form in the Champions having last played in the knockouts in the 2019-20 season. A win against Shakhtar Donetsk could see Xavi Hernandez’s side book their place in the Round of 16 with two matches to spare. Interestingly, their last taste of Champions League knockout stage match was in 2020 when they lost 8-2 to Bayern Munich.

In other big news, Newcastle United will look for revenge having lost to Dortmund 1-0 at St. James Park on Matchday 4. In another group game, AC Milan host PSG with the hosts looking to score the first goal of the season. So far AC Milan have scrambled to two goalless draws while losing to PSG in Paris.

In other matches, former champions Porto host Royal Antwerp of Belgium while Italian outfit Lazio host Feyenoord in Rome. Atletico Madrid host Scottish outfit Celtic while RB Leipzig could guarantee passage in the R16 with a win in the Serbian capital against 1991 champions Red Star Belgrade.

Champions League: Man City, Barcelona set sights on R16; Milan search for first continental win of season

Premier League champions Manchester City crushed arch-rivals Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday (Oct 29) as they continued to climb the ladder. The win at Old Trafford is City’s biggest win at Old Trafford since March 2014 as United’s dodgy season continued with their fifth defeat of the season. Erling Haaland’s goals on either side of the break along with Phil Foden were enough for Pep Gaurdiola’s men to take the third spot in the league on goals scored.

<h2>City rock United in derby</h2>

The 191st Manchester derby saw both sides enter positive results in the Champions League, but it was City who stamped their authority over the contest. In the 26th minute of the match, Rasmus Hojlund was caught by the eagle eye of referee Paul Tierney when he brought down Rodri. The referee was asked to consult the pitch-side monitor by VAR, upon which the penalty was confirmed. Steeped in Haaland as he made no mistake in sending the United goalkeeper wrong side to give City a 1-0 lead. They would continue to hold to the lead until halftime.

After the break, City doubled their lead five minutes into the second half with Bernardo Silva serving Haaland an easy header at the far post. There was no way back for United in the second half as the onslaught continued with City on consistent press. United had two decent chances after the break but saw Marcus Rashford come out second best as Edernson denied United a clear sight of goal.

Phil Foden then added the final touch to glory with the third goal as City registered another win under Pep at Old Trafford. He now has five wins as opposition manager at Old Trafford, more than any other manager in the Premier League’s history.

City next take on Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday before playing Young Boys in the return leg of the Champions League. United on the other hand take on Newcastle United in the League Cup as they try to bounce back from the defeat.

Premier League: Erling Haaland-inspired Man City crush United in derby; record biggest away win in nine years

Kylian Mbappe helped Paris Saint-Germain move top of Champions League Group F with a 3-0 victory over AC Milan on Wednesday, while Newcastle slumped to a first defeat, 1-0 against Borussia Dortmund.

Erling Haaland was back on the scoresheet as Manchester City won 3-1 away to Young Boys, and fellow British side Celtic drew 2-2 in Glasgow against Atletico Madrid.

Goals from Mbappe, Randal Kolo Muani and Kang-in Lee in Paris against Milan sent PSG top of the closely-contested Group F with six points.

The deadlock was broken just after the half-hour mark when Mbappe received the ball from Warren Zaire-Emery, unbalanced Fikayo Tomori and then wrong-footed compatriot Mike Maignan with a smart, low finish.

Ousmane Dembele thought he had doubled the hosts' advantage on 50 minutes only for a VAR check to disallow it for a foul in the build-up.

Kolo Muani, the third member of PSG's French front three, then did double the lead three minutes later with a close-range tap-in before Lee struck.

"We are very proud of our performance," Kolo Muani said to Canal Plus.

"Winning these games gives everyone confidence."

Newcastle came back to earth with a home defeat by Borussia Dortmund, which saw the Germans move above them into second place on head-to-head.

It was a tight encounter with Dortmund edging it thanks to a first-half goal from Felix Nmecha.

Nmecha gave Borussia a deserved lead on the stroke of half-time with a well-controlled finish following excellent defensive and then creative work by Nico Schlotterbeck.

Newcastle nearly claimed a point in the closing stages of the match when Callum Wilson's header struck the crossbar, before a later Anthony Gordon chance was deflected on to the woodwork.

Dortmund coach Edin Terzic told TNT: "With the first half we deserved to win and the second half we protected the win."

- Haaland breaks duck -

Manchester City made it three from three to top Group G, with Manuel Akanji's goal and a Haaland brace seeing off Young Boys in Switzerland.

Man City endured a frustrating first period on a plastic pitch in Bern, with Young Boys goalkeeper Anthony Racioppi producing several fine saves.

Immediately after half-time a stunning save from the Swiss 'keeper saw the ball rebound off the crossbar and fall straight to Akanji.

The hosts stunned the Champions League holders on 52 minutes when Meschack Elia broke clear of the defence and lobbed a finish over the advancing Ederson.

However, hopes of an upset were extinguished when Haaland broke his five-game goal drought in the competition with a penalty in the 67th minute.

After a Julian Alvarez goal was disallowed, the Norwegian striker produced a fine finish to round off a 3-1 win.

"I am sorry, but this guy will score goals all his life, with the chances he is an incredible threat," said City coach Pep Guardiola of Haaland.

In Germany, Leipzig created a five-point buffer for themselves in Group G's second position with a 3-1 win against Red Star Belgrade, thanks to David Raum, a second-half stunner from starlet Xavi Simons and Dani Olmo.

- Topsy-turvy in Paradise -

The points were shared between Celtic and Atletico in a lively draw, which saw the hosts pick up their first point of the campaign.

Celtic took the lead early when Kyogo Furuhashi lifted the ball beyond Jan Oblak in the fourth minute, completing a fine team move.

On 23 minutes, Joe Hart tipped an Antoine Griezmann penalty onto the post only for it to rebound perfectly to the Frenchman who made no mistake second time round.

The hosts sprang back immediately when a 27th-minute cross fell at the back stick to Luis Palma, who hammered the ball back across the unsighted Oblak.

Alvaro Morata got Atletico back into the tie on 53 minutes when he sent a perfectly judged header back across Hart and into the net.

Rodrigo De Paul picked up a late second yellow card, but the hosts were unable to turn their numerical advantage into a winner.

Feyenoord moved into top spot in Group E following a 3-1 victory against Lazio in the pool's early kick-off.

A Santiago Gimenez brace and first goal for summer signing Ramiz Zerrouki saw the Dutch home despite a late penalty converted by Pedro for Lazio, who dropped into third.

Barcelona saw out a win at home 2-1 against Shakhtar Donetsk thanks to first-half strikes from Ferran Torres and Fermin Lopez, making it three from three for the Group H leaders.

Porto came from behind in Belgium to beat Antwerp 4-1, with all their goals coming in the second half courtesy of an Evanilson hat-trick and Stephen Eustaquio.

Mbappe helps PSG go top, Haaland back among the goals

Manchester City beat Brighton 2-1 on Saturday to return to the Premier League summit and end Liverpool's brief stay at the top after their victory in the Merseyside derby.

Mohamed Salah scored twice as Jurgen Klopp's men beat 10-man Everton 2-0 in the early kick-off at Anfield, extending their dominance over their struggling neighbours.

But champions City put their recent wobble behind them as they saw off high-flying Brighton thanks to goals from Julian Alvarez and Erling Haaland.

Arsenal can become the fourth team to top the table on Saturday if they beat Chelsea in the early evening kick-off.

Liverpool had fortune on their side at home.

Everton's Ashley Young was sent off before half-time for two bookable offences, while Ibrahima Konate escaped a second booking in the second half with the game still goalless.

Liverpool struggled to make their man advantage count, but finally achieved the breakthrough 15 minutes from time when Salah smashed home from the penalty spot after Michael Keane handled.

Salah was then teed up by Darwin Nunez to make the points safe deep into stoppage time.

Everton manager Sean Dyche was angry about the decision not to send Konate off.

"I have no clue how he didn't feel it was a bookable offence," he said.

"I like to think there are a lot of fair-minded people here today who are stunned that wasn't a second yellow card."

Even Klopp said he could understand Everton's frustration at a lack of consistency from referee Craig Pawson.

But the three points mean the Reds have lost just one of their last 29 Merseyside derbies and remain unbeaten at Anfield in front of a crowd against Everton since 1999.

City, who had lost their previous two league games, dominated the first half of their match at the Etihad against Brighton, taking the lead through Alvarez in the seventh minute.

Jeremy Doku was the creator as he reached the byline and pulled back for Alvarez to tuck home his seventh of the season from 12 yards.

Haaland ended his brief goal drought by doubling City's lead 12 minutes later, driving home a fierce left-footed shot from just outside the area.

But it was a different story after the break and Brighton pulled a goal back in the 73rd minute.

Moments after Alvarez failed with an attempt to catch Jason Steele off his line, the ball was quickly sent upfield and, after Kaoru Mitoma's attempted pass was blocked, Ansu Fati tucked home.

City defender Manuel Akanji was sent off in the closing minutes but they held on to win despite late pressure.

Newcastle, whose early-season struggles are now a distant memory, romped to a 4-0 win against sorry Crystal Palace, with goals from Jacob Murphy, Anthony Gordon, Sean Longstaff and Callum Wilson.

The win, their fourth in five Premier League matches, lifts Eddie Howe's men to fifth in the Premier League.

Elsewhere, Brentford beat Burnley 3-0 while Wolves came from behind to beat Bournemouth 2-1 thanks to a late winner from Sasa Kalajdzic.

Luton recovered from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 against Nottingham Forest.

Manchester United play bottom club Sheffield United in the late kick-off, with Old Trafford in mourning over the death of club great Bobby Charlton.

Tottenham, who started the day at the top, are not in action until Monday, when they host Fulham.

Premier League: Man City return to summit after Liverpool win derby; wins for Newcastle, Wolves

Arsenal ended their eight-year wait for a Premier League win over Manchester City as Gabriel Martinelli's late strike sealed a dramatic 1-0 victory against the champions on Sunday.

After 12 successive league defeats at the hands of Pep Guardiola's men, the Gunners enjoyed a moment of sweet redemption at the Emirates Stadium.

With just four minutes left, Martinelli's shot took a hefty deflection off City defender Nathan Ake, sparking wild celebrations as Arsenal clinched a top-flight success against the treble winners for the first time since December 2015.

Arsenal had beaten City on penalties in the Community Shield in August, but that victory in the curtain-raiser to the domestic season could not be taken as seriously as this potentially crucial result.

It lifted unbeaten Arsenal two points above third-placed City into second place, leaving them behind leaders Tottenham on goals scored.

For the first time since December 2018, City have lost successive league games following their 2-1 defeat at Wolves last weekend.

Add in a League Cup loss against Newcastle and City have been beaten in three of their last four games.

It is a rare sign of vulnerability from a team who started their bid for a fourth successive title by winning the first six games of the season.

Few will expect City to surrender without a fight, but Guardiola has issues to solve as he looks to reinvigorate a squad that may have lost a little hunger after their treble triumph.

There is no lack of appetite for silverware among Arsenal as they try to erase the bitter taste of blowing an eight-point lead late in the season to finish five points behind City in second place.

Guardiola said this week that Arsenal "are back" as long-term challengers to City's domestic supremacy thanks to the astute guidance of his former assistant Arteta.

For once, Guardiola lost the tactical duel with his protege as Arteta's substitutions proved decisive and gave the title race an early plot twist.

<h2>Arteta masterstroke</h2>

City nearly took the lead inside five minutes when Josko Gvardiol's lunging effort was headed off the line by Declan Rice after Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya misjudged a cross.

With Arsenal failing to clear the danger after that narrow escape, City's Nathan Ake should scored from close range, but the defender wastefully fired over.

For the second time in the opening 20 minutes, Raya almost gifted City a goal as he took too long to deal with Gabriel's back-pass, allowing Julian Alvarez to close the 'keeper down and deflect his panicked clearance inches wide.

Eddie Nketiah tried to ease Arsenal's stress when he cut inside the City area and curled wide of the far post.

Frantically waving his arms to the crowd, Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard raised the decibel levels before Mateo Kovacic brought the atmosphere to boiling point.

Crunching through the back of Odegaard's ankle, Kovacic earned a booking after a VAR check for a potential red card.

If Arteta felt aggrieved that Kovacic wasn't sent off for that challenge, the Gunners boss was apoplectic moments later after the Croatian avoided a second yellow card after chopping down Rice.

Following their tepid first half, Arsenal were the more forceful side after the break.

Martinelli, a half-time substitute, forced Ederson to save at his near post after sprinting onto Rice's pass.

Frustrated by City's disjointed display, Guardiola sent on John Stones, Jeremy Doku and Matheus Nunes, but the changes failed to produce the desired impact.

But Arteta countered by introducing Thomas Partey and Kai Havertz in a move that proved a masterstroke.

City looked content for a point as the half wore on with few chances, but Arsenal kept pressing and finally made the breakthrough in the 86th minute.

Partey's long pass reached Havertz and he laid the ball off to Martinelli on the edge of the area, where the Brazilian smashed a fierce strike that took a wicked deflection off Ake as it flashed past the wrong-footed Ederson.

Premier League: Gabriel Martinelli strikes late as Arsenal end City curse

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has admitted for the first time that his club wanted to sign Declan Rice from West Ham United over the summer, adding that he would be judged if the club matched Arsena's offer. During the transfer window, City made a few overtures towards the midfielder before Arsenal swooped in and prized out the Englishman.&nbsp;

Guardiola's admission, ahead of the big Premier League encounter against Arsenal highlights the pedigree of Rice who is being regarded as one of the best defensive midfielders currently plying their trade in Europe.&nbsp;

“For sure everybody knows City wanted him, we wanted him. He could play not just when Rodri could not," said Guardiola, referring to the absence of Rodri who has been suspended due to the red card.&nbsp;

''At the end, Arsenal pushed more and wanted him more, maybe Arteta was more convincing than me, or the club itself,” he added.&nbsp;

The Spaniard expounded that the club would have been lambasted if they went into a bidding war with Arsenal.&nbsp;

“Normally when City spend this amount of money it is crazy. When others spend it, then it is how smart they are. That happens. But I am not denying anyone can do whatever they want. I never judge what the others do," said Pep.&nbsp;

“We are judged all the time, but it is fine. If we were in the middle of the table that wouldn’t happen, we would not be a problem or under scrutiny from the rest."

<h2>Arsenal vs Man City&nbsp;</h2>

Currently, City sit second on the points table, having won six games and lost one. Meanwhile, Arsenal are on the third spot and remain only the second team to have an unbeaten record so far. However, they will be coming into the contest after suffering a shock 1-2 defeat against Ligue 1 side Lens in the Champions League on Tuesday (October 3).&nbsp;

The last time City visited the Emirates, Arsenal had to endure a harrowing 3-1 defeat after Kevin De Bruyne opened the scoring in the 24th minute, capitalising on an error from Takehiro Tomiyasu.&nbsp;

Ahead of the match, the biggest concern for Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta remains the injury of Bukayo Saka. The talented right-winger was taken off the pitch in the 34th minute against Lens and his absence could have a sizeable say in the outcome of the contest. Although Arteta has given hope to Gunners' fans that Saka remains in 'contention' for the match.&nbsp;

Pep Guardiola says Man City would have been judged if they spent as much money as Arsenal did on Declan Rice

Arsenal defender William Saliba has revealed it was "really painful"&nbsp;to watch his team lose out on the Premier League title after he suffered an injury that forced him to sit out the business end of the league last season.&nbsp;

Saliba, regarded as the next big defender of his generation, often drawing comparisons to Liverpool's Virgil Van Dijk for similar playing styles, was the mainstay for his side throughout the title run. However, his absence had a catastrophic effect on the team's performance as Arsenal slipped&nbsp;from the number one spot.&nbsp;

“Of course, it was really painful because I watched my team play every game, the most important of the season, and I was not able to play. Of course, it hurt me. Of course, I could have helped my team to maybe win the Premier League but we never know," said Saliba.&nbsp;

"It was a good experience because we were first for all the season and at the end we finished second. Every game is so important, we try to win every game to win the league. Injuries are part of football and hopefully I won’t be injured.”

<h2>Arsenal's defensive record without Saliba</h2>

In the 27 league games that Saliba started, he helped Arsenal keep a clean sheet in 11 of them. Post his injury the London-based team could only keep two clean sheets in nine games as Manchester City came from behind to secure a third consecutive title.&nbsp;

Saliba's statement comes days ahead of his side's all-important tie against City. The Gunners currently have the wood on City, having beaten them once already this season, winning the Community Shield via penalties, after scoring at the death to equalise the game.

The match on the weekend, scheduled to take place at the Emirates Stadium will be an opportunity for Arsenal to pip their rivals and go top of the table.

Arsenal defender William Saliba has revealed it was "really painful" to watch his team lose out on the Premier League title after he suffered an injury that forced him to sit out the business end of the league last season. Saliba, regarded as the next big defender of his generation, often drawing comparisons to Liverpool's Virgil Van Dijk for similar playing styles, was the mainstay for his side throughout the title run. However, his absence had a catastrophic effect on the team's performance as Arsenal slipped from the number one spot. “Of course, it was really painful because I watched my team play every game, the most important of the season, and I was not able to play. Of course, it hurt me. Of course, I could have helped my team to maybe win the Premier League but we never know," said Saliba. 'It was really painful...': William Saliba on Arsenal slipping up in title race last season

Manchester City's perfect start to the Premier League season came undone in a shock 2-1 loss to Wolves, while Manchester United slumped to a 1-0 home defeat to Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Arsenal closed to within a point of the lead by cruising to a 4-0 win at Bournemouth, while Aston Villa thrashed Brighton 6-1 to move into the top four.

City had won the opening six games of their title defence as they aim to become the first side to ever claim four consecutive English top-flight titles.

By contrast, Wolves had taken just four points from their first six games but stunned the champions at Molineux.

Ruben Dias' own goal put the home side in front, but City responded after the break through Julian Alvarez's free-kick.

Wolves, though, were a constant threat on the counter-attack and got their reward when Hwang Hee-Chan swept home at the second attempt 25 minutes from time.

City's defeat means Liverpool can go top should they end Tottenham's unbeaten Premier League start under Ange Postecoglou in the 1615GMT kick off.

United have now lost four of their opening seven league games of the season to pile more pressure on Erik ten Hag.

Joachim&nbsp;Andersen's stunning first-half volley separated the sides at Old Trafford.

United had won a League Cup meeting between the sides 3-0 in midweek.

But with Palace restored to full strength, the Red Devils suffered from a familiar lack of cutting edge up front as they laboured to get back into the game.

Defeat sees United slip to 10th in the table.

<h2>Arsenal up to second&nbsp;</h2>

Arsenal moved up to second as Mikel Arteta's men eased to victory at Bournemouth.

Bukayo Saka had been an injury doubt, but headed into an empty net to open the scoring on his 87th consecutive Premier League appearance.

Saka could have had more had he not then handed over penalty duties.

Martin Odegaard has shared responsibility from the spot with Saka this season and the Norwegian slotted home Arsenal's second before the break.

Both Saka and Odegaard then stood aside to give Kai Havertz the confidence boost of his first goal for the club when the Gunners were awarded a second spot-kick on 53 minutes.

Ben White rounded off the scoring in stoppage time.

Newcastle's recovery from a slow start to the season continues as the Magpies overcame Burnley 2-0.

Miguel Almiron fired into the top corner to open the scoring and Alexander Isak's penalty secured the points 14 minutes from time.

Ollie Watkins bagged a hat-trick in Villa's stunning demolition of Brighton.

Two goals from the England striker and a Pervis Estupinan own goal put Villa 3-0 up inside 26 minutes.

Ansu Fati reduced the deficit with his first Brighton goal.

But the day belonged to Watkins and he became the first Villa player in 47 years to score two hat-tricks in one season.

Jacob Ramsey and Douglas Luiz piled on the pain for Brighton in the closing stages and did enough to edge Villa ahead of the Seagulls on goal difference.

"We are feeling strong here with the supporters, we are connected with them," said Villa boss Unai Emery after a 10th consecutive home Premier League win.

Luton secured their first ever Premier League win with a 2-1 victory at Everton.

Tom Lockyer and Carlton Morris were on target for the Hatters, who climb out of the relegation zone.

Sheffield United remain bottom after the Blades were beaten 2-0 at West Ham with Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio getting the goals for David Moyes' men.

Premier League: Man City shocked by Wolves, Man Utd beaten by Crystal Palace

Manchester City crashed out of the League Cup with a 1-0 defeat at Newcastle on Wednesday as Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool booked their places in the last 16.

Alexander Isak scored the only goal at St. James' Park in a clash between two much-changed sides.

City won the treble of Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup last season, but any dream of surpassing that feat with an unprecedented quadruple was swiftly brought to an end.

Erling Haaland was left on the bench by City coach Pep Guardiola for the full 90 minutes and his presence was missed in a toothless display.

Eddie Howe also rang the changes from an 8-0 thrashing of Sheffield United at the weekend.

But it was not until the Newcastle boss introduced Anthony Gordon and Bruno Guimaraes at half-time that the hosts took control.

Isak had the simple task of slotting home at the far post after a burst from Joelinton opened up the City defence.

"A win like this can elevate us," said Howe.

"First-half we tried to rotate the squad and keep our players fresh. Second-half we were better for sure, but when you bring on players like Anthony Gordon and Bruno, they're high level players."

Newcastle's reward is a fourth-round trip to Manchester United in a repeat of last season's final.

<h2>Chelsea bounce back</h2>

Chelsea prevented the crisis at Stamford Bridge deepening as Nicolas Jackson's goal beat Brighton 1-0.

The Senegalese's wastefulness in front of goal has been partly to blame for the Blues' return of one win in their opening six Premier League games under Mauricio Pochettino.

But Jackson coolly slotted home from the impressive Cole Palmer's pass on 50 minutes.

Chelsea will face Blackburn in the last 16.

Arsenal were also 1-0 winners at Brentford as Aaron Ramsdale responded to being controversially dropped by Mikel Arteta.

Reiss Nelson's eighth-minute goal separated the sides despite a Brentford onslaught after the break.

Arteta has preferred David Raya to Ramsdale in goal for the past three games.

But the England international was needed for the Gunners to progress as he produced a brilliant stop to deny Yoane Wissa an equaliser.

Arsenal will travel to West Ham in the next round after the Hammers were 1-0 winners at third-tier Lincoln.

Liverpool trailed to Championship leaders Leicester after just three minutes before fighting back to win 3-1.

Kasey McAteer rounded off a rapid counter-attack to give the Foxes a flying start.

Jurgen Klopp's men laid seige to the visitors' goal but were made to wait until after the break to draw level.

The equaliser was made in the Netherlands as Ryan Gravenberch set up Cody Gakpo to find the far corner.

Klopp then turned to his bench to find a winner and found it through a stunning strike from Dominik Szoboszlai.

The Hungarian captain took aim from outside the box and smashed the ball into the top corner 20 minutes from time.

"Dom was a surprise with how fast he has fitted in, it was pretty much from the first minute," said Klopp on Szoboszlai's fast start to his Liverpool career.

"Top-class player with a lot of quality. He never stops."

Diogo Jota's backheel in off the far post then made the tie safe.

Klopp's men will travel to Bournemouth in round four.

Everton built on their first Premier League win of the season at Brentford on Saturday with an impressive 2-1 victory at Aston Villa.

The Toffees were thrashed 4-0 on their visit to Villa Park in the league last month, but goals from James Garner and Dominic Calvert-Lewin helped Sean Dyche's men gain revenge.

EFL Cup: Man City crash out at Newcastle, Chelsea bounce back; Arsenal, Liverpool win

Manchester City's bid to retain their Champions League title will be less difficult than their long endeavour to win Europe's top club competition, manager Pep Guardiola said on Monday. City lifted their first Champions League crown with a 1-0 win over Inter Milan in Istanbul in June, bringing an end to years of disappointment and near misses in the competition.

Asked about City's chances of retaining the title ahead of their Group G opener at home to Red Star Belgrade, Guardiola told reporters: "It'll be easier. The most difficult to win is the first one. It is incredible for us but it is just one.

However, Guardiola said his players should not feel at ease, adding: "Tomorrow is the first step. We will try and get the first three points.

"It's important the players don't feel relaxed. For our club to win the Champions League is incredible but in perspective how many (clubs have) won one Champions League? A lot.

"We haven't done anything special with just one, but we are incredibly proud."

Guardiola said the injured trio of Jack Grealish, John Stones and Mateo Kovacic, who all missed City's 3-1 win at West Ham United on Saturday, would still not be available on Tuesday.

"I think they are getting better, they are not for tomorrow," Guardiola added. "Hopefully for Nottingham Forest (in the Premier League on Saturday) or coming games because we need it because we have not a big squad at that moment but it is what it is.

"Look how we prove (ourselves) without them in the last games. Hopefully they'll be back soon because we need the competition."

City also won the Premier League and FA Cup to seal a treble last season but despite that success England right back Kyle Walker said there was no shortage of motivation in the squad.

"It's our job (to be motivated). We're at a massive club for a reason," he told reporters. "It comes from within that you have to keep going and be motivated. The manager wants to win more, he doesn't settle for second and we need to follow in his footsteps.

"What we've done is in the past now, it's a new season. The manager drew a diagram and had us at the bottom of the mountain and we have to climb it again. Going again is what separates good teams from great teams."
