Hoffenheim coach Julian Nagelsmann is plotting to outsmart his idol Pep Guardiola when Manchester City attempt to get their Champions League campaign back on track by winning in Germany on Tuesday.

At 31, Nagelsmann is the youngest coach in Champions League history, and admits to being a keen student of Guardiola's methods.

Now Nagelsmann hopes to thwart the Spanish master tactician in Hoffenheim's first home Champions League match in the club's history.

"I don't know if it it's always an advantage to know Pep Guardiola, because then you know that he is doing so much the right way or the best way," said Nagelsmann.

"It's not very easy to say exactly how he will set his team.

"He has different ways to play against different opponents.

"You can see a lot of similarities in his style, but also see a lot of differences.

"As I said, it's not easy to approach his style of play, but I have a few ideas."

In Sinsheim, City will be aiming to bounce back from their shock 2-1 loss at home to Lyon in their first Group F game, while Hoffenheim drew their opener 2-2 at Shakhtar Donetsk.

Guardiola's City beat Brighton 2-0 at home at the weekend to go top of the Premier League, but Hoffenheim suffered their third defeat in six Bundesliga games on Saturday, losing 2-1 at home to RB Leipzig, who the ambitious Nagelsmann will coach next season.

This is the first time Nagelsmann will go head-to-head with Guardiola, who coached Bayern Munich to three consecutive Bundesliga titles from 2013 to 2016 before joining City.

There are elements to Nagelsmann's aggressive style with Hoffenheim which echo that of Guardiola, whose City team also like to press their opponents in their own half.

Neither is afraid to take risks in selection or switch tactics mid-match.

Nagelsmann became a rising star in German football when he was thrust from coaching Hoffenheim's Under-19 team to being tasked with maintaining the senior team in the Bundesliga.

He was just 29 in February 2016 when he took charge of Hoffenheim -- a Bundesliga record for a permanent head coach -- with the team second from bottom.

He only gained his coaching licence a month after his appointment, but the precarious situation did not faze the self-confident Nagelsmann.

The former defender forged a strong team spirit, turning Hoffenheim from relegation contenders to Champions League qualifiers within two seasons.

Despite his youth, Nagelsmann is street-wise with his answers in press conferences and carefully cultivates his public image.

Just as current Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp made no secret of his hair transplant while in charge of Borussia Dortmund, Nagelsmann was equally open about his own cosmetic surgery.

He was honest about having permanent make-up on his eye-brows when he sported a new look for the 3-1 defeat at Bayern Munich on the first day of the season in August.

"Women have always been able to wear make-up, I have tried it and I hope it will work for me," he declared.

Such self-confidence is typical of Nagelsmann whose playing career was wrecked by a knee injury in 2008 while playing for Augsburg's reserves, aged just 20.

Current Paris Saint Germain boss Thomas Tuchel, who was coaching one of the Augsburg's junior teams at the time, spotted his potential and had Nagelsmann scout future opponents.

He joined Hoffenheim in Hoffenheim in 2010 as assistant coach of the club's Under-17 team, later coaching the Under-19 team to the 2014 national age-group title when he was less than 10 years older than his players.

Nagelsmann was born in the Bavarian town of Landsberg am Lech and before it was announced this June that he will coach RB Leipzig from 2019/20, the German media saw him as a Bayern Munich coach in waiting.

He fanned the flames last year by revealing he has had a house built in Munich, where his wife's parents live and stated "FC Bayern is a big part of my dream".

For now, the dream is getting one over on Guardiola.

Across Manchester, Guardiola has his own issues with social media and off-field behaviour after admitting he had to remind Benjamin Mendy of his responsibilities when the City defender arrived late for treatment to an injury on Sunday.

Mendy, who has now missed City's last four games, has a bruised metatarsal in his foot, yet the France international posted photographs of himself late on Saturday at Anthony Joshua's title fight at Wembley in London.

Guardiola confirmed he had no problem with Mendy travelling to London for the bout despite his injury.

But the Spaniard is clearly frustrated by Mendy's absence after he missed nearly all of last season with a cruciate knee ligament injury.

"I don't know (when he will return). I think soon, but I don't know," Guardiola said.

"When a guy comes here and is injured for seven months or arrives here and plays two or three games and after one month is injured it's always a problem.&nbsp;

"It's always a problem to be involved in the way we want to play and the meetings and correcting mistakes. That's why it's so important. Hopefully this injury can be the last."

The situation between Guardiola and Mendy appears nowhere near as combustible as the clash of the egos between Mourinho and Pogba.

However, Guardiola admits that social media, and the scrutiny that comes with it, has become a problem and, tellingly, he has already issued Mendy a polite suggestion this season that he should tone down his behaviour in that area.&nbsp;

"Characters are quite similar or the same," he said. "Competitors are competitors. Nice guys are nice guys. The egos are the same.&nbsp;

"The only difference is social media. Now it's more popular. Before, nobody knew what the players did inside the locker room or outside.&nbsp;

"Now everybody knows everything. Years ago they were human beings, they are human beings now too.&nbsp;

"With fears and good things and bad things. So it's quite similar. Now the media are more involved.&nbsp;

"Ten years ago nobody expected to make a documentary about what happened inside the locker room and now we made a documentary about what happened inside the locker room.&nbsp;

"Now everybody outside knows what happens inside, so we have to adapt. Human beings are the same. It was the same before."

'I spoke with him'

Still, Mendy has been told, in no uncertain terms, that arriving late for training is unacceptable by the City manager.

"The players should be here and he knows it. I spoke with him," Guardiola said.&nbsp;

"I'm unhappy at every player arriving late. They have to be on time. Normally when you arrive on time you arrive on time in the game.&nbsp;

"At the high level when you arrive late you arrive late in the game.&nbsp;

"But I have no problem (going to London). Boxing is so important in England. In Spain nobody cares."

Meanwhile, Guardiola confirmed he would like to see City captain Vincent Kompany, who was this week awarded a testimonial, be given a new contract when his current one expires in June.

Kompany is in talks over a testimonial match to be played in August and Guardiola said: "Yes, that is my wish.

"Hats off! Ten years is a lot. It's incredible. He played the League Cup this week like it's the final of the Champions League. That means a lot to me.&nbsp;

Few national teams have experienced the ups and downs of&nbsp;Brazil&nbsp;over the last five years but the good news for fans of the "selecao" is that they are ascendant as Russia approaches.

City won their third title in seven seasons with five games to spare on Sunday after a record-breaking campaign that has seen manager Pep Guardiola's side outclass their rivals, but Walker believes there is potential to do more.

"There is still a lot of room for improvement," England international Walker told BBC Radio 5 live. "I have read some articles that say we need to win things continuously for a number of years before we are classed as a great team.

"Every single one of us wants to be recognised as one of the greatest teams to play in the Premier League."

City's march to the title and their League Cup triumph in February has been offset by a shock FA Cup exit to Wigan Athletic and the 5-1 aggregate defeat by Liverpool in the Champions League quarter-finals.

"If we concentrate on ourselves then as a team we can go on to great things," Walker added. "But the Liverpool game(s) showed us that we are not a perfect team."

The 27-year-old also credited perfectionist Guardiola for City's free-flowing style of play, which has led to their domestic dominance.

City can sweeten their title win by breaking several records in their five remaining league games, starting with Sunday's home match against struggling Swansea City.

Firstly, he fulfils that ball-playing requirement that Guardiola demands from his keepers. Ederson`s pass success rate of more than 85 per cent is higher than players including Paul Pogba, Kevin De Bruyne, and Cesc Fabregas.&nbsp; 
It means the 24-year-old is the league`s most accurate goalkeeper by a comfortable distance.

Ederson has also made some crucial saves, such as the last-gasp penalty stop at Crystal Palace in December, as well making a significant improvement in the save percentage department -- contributions that can make all the difference in a title race.

"He is young and has to improve a lot of things, but he is, for me, already one of the best in the world," Guardiola said recently.
