Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has apologised to Riyad Mahrez for the winger's lack of game time in recent weeks, saying the Algerian's form is not to be blamed.

Mahrez, who arrived at the Etihad Stadium from Leicester City for a club record $77.36 million at the start of the season, has not started for City in the Premier League since the victory at Southampton on December 30.

The 27-year-old has impressed Guardiola by making the most of his opportunities but the form of Raheem Sterling, Leroy Sane and Bernardo Silva has prevented him getting an extended run into the side.

"I am the reason (he has not played). He is absolutely not guilty," Guardiola told reporters. "I am sad because he is training incredibly.

"We have incredible players, like for example Bernardo and Raz (Sterling) in top, top form and that is the only reason why. There's no particular reason, like being upset or something like that.

"He is a guy we are happy with but unfortunately I am not kind with him. In fact, I cannot give him the minutes he deserves, so I'm sorry. That's all I can say."

Mahrez is set to be involved in City's FA Cup fifth-round trip to Newport County on Saturday, where the winger will aim to add to his nine goals in all competitions this season.

Guardiola expects Mahrez to get his share of regular first-team football during the season run-in, with City still fighting for four trophies.

"Give him five or six games in a row playing and he is going to play at the level of Sterling or Bernardo, or the players who play," the Spanish manager added.

"Just keep going, not complain too much, move forward and fight more and more. His time is coming and I'm pretty sure he is going to play good."

"I am happy with the confidence, it wasn't easy to play with this confidence after the last match."

Maurizio Sarri explains handshake snub as Pep Guardiola dismisses controversy

Manchester City's on-fire striker Sergio Aguero struck his second hat-trick in a week as the champions ruthlessly destroyed woeful Chelsea in a 6-0 win at The Etihad on Sunday to return to the top of the Premier League.

While Liverpool's 3-0 win over Bournemouth on Saturday cut short talk of title run-in nerves on Merseyside this City victory, achieved with some glorious football against a top six opponent, was an emphatic statement.

In the past week City have beaten Arsenal at home and Everton away before taking Maurizio Sarri's side to pieces with four goals in the opening 25 minutes.

Rampant City have now scored 33 goals in their last five home games in all competitions and have a chance of lifting their first silverware of the season when they face Chelsea again at Wembley in the League Cup final on Feb. 24.

City and Liverpool are both on 65 points with City having the better goal difference although they have played one more game than their rivals. Third-placed Tottenham Hotspur, who beat Leicester City 3-1 earlier on Sunday, are five points behind.

Aguero, who scored a hat-trick seven days ago against Arsenal, has equalled Alan Shearer's record of 11 Premier League hat-tricks and is now joint top scorer in the league this season with Liverpool's Mohamed Salah.

DEFENCE NAPPING

Chelsea had no time to settle before Raheem Sterling fired City ahead in the fourth minute with a side-foot finish after a quick free-kick from Kevin De Bruyne caught the visiting defence napping.

After Aguero had somehow missed an open goal from two metres, the Argentine promptly beat goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga with a blistering strike from 25 metres, underlining the fact that he is far more than a penalty area poacher.

A poor header by Chelsea's Ross Barkley towards his own goal gifted Aguero with City's third, the Argentine firing home with a first-time shot on the turn, and then a low drive from Ilkay Gundogan made it 4-0 after 25 minutes.

Following the break, Aguero, who also became City's all-time top scorer in league games, headed against the bar before he completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot after Sterling had been brought down by Cesar Azpilicueta.

Sterling completed the rout, turning in a low cross from Oleksandr Zinchenko in the 80th.

The defeat was Chelsea's worst since their 7-0 loss to Nottingham Forest in 1991 and will raise serious questions about the direction the team is going in under Italian Sarri as they slipped to sixth place on 50 points, a point off the top four.

Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp has urged his players to give "every fibre of their bodies" in the battle for the Premier League title.

Manchester City moved to the top of the league on Wednesday for the first time since December after Klopp's side limped to back-to-back draws against Leicester City and West Ham United.

However, Klopp has dismissed the notion that Liverpool are wilting under the pressure of bidding for their first top division title in 29 years.

"I got a message this week, another sign that people think I need help – I don't need help, I'm fine – but it said in the last 10 games City dropped 12 points and we dropped seven," Klopp told reporters ahead of Saturday's game against Bournemouth.

"Is it interesting for me? Not really, but obviously the view from outside is completely different.

"The good news is we are still in there but the only chance to improve is by winning football games. We will be ready with each fibre of our bodies to fight for everything."

Klopp confirmed centre-back Joe Gomez will be out for up to six weeks as he continues to recover from leg surgery, but Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum took part in first-team training this week.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who is recovering from a long-term knee injury, was added to the Champions League squad but Klopp played down expectations regarding the return of the England midfielder.

"If we go to the semi-final I think he is available," Klopp added.

"Maybe quarter-final, I am not 100 percent sure, but he still needs time. Everything looks fine, but now I wait for the green light of the medical department... We are not at that point in the moment."

Liverpool players must fight with every fibre: Juergen Klopp

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has hailed striker Sergio Aguero's ability to consistently deliver on the biggest occasions.

Guardiola pointed to Aguero's 40th-minute opener in last month's 2-1 win over fellow title challengers Liverpool as the perfect example to illustrate his point.

That victory helped City cut then table-toppers Liverpool's lead to four points and Guardiola's side have since gone ahead of the Merseyside club on goal difference in a compelling race.

"That goal against Liverpool summed up what he is about. Sometimes the best tennis players on a point to save the break, they make an ace," Guardiola told reporters ahead of Sunday's league clash against fourth-placed Chelsea.

"In the big moments, always the big athletes come there, the big finals, the big moments. Sometimes some players hide in the scary moments.

"The other ones step forward and say, 'I'm the boss, I'm here and I'm going to win the game'. Big clubs need these kinds of players. It's simple."

Aguero has scored 14 league goals in 22 matches this season and Guardiola hoped the club's all-time record scorer can find the target again on Sunday.

"Hopefully, he can continue to do it. In the big games, we need the important players... this game belongs to the players and the important games belong to the special players," Guardiola added.

City have 62 points from 26 matches while Chelsea are 12 points behind them having played a game fewer.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was left stunned in a pre-match press conference when a journalist told him that defender Benjamin Mendy was in Hong Kong.

The French full-back posted on social media platform Instagram that he was at Hong Kong International Airport and when that was brought to Guardiola's attention, the manager signalled his surprise by swearing live on camera.

On reporter's inquiry about Mendy, who is currently recovering from a knee ligament injury that has sidelined him since November, Guardiola laughed at the report and even queried a club press officer to see if he had any ideas.

Guardiola replied, "Well before, he said 'I'm going one day to Paris'...OK, but Hong Kong is far away."

He also added, "I have to install Instagram and my account."

Champions Manchester City went top of the Premier League with a disciplined 2-0 win over Everton at Goodison Park on Wednesday that saw them leapfrog Liverpool on goal difference.

Aymeric Laporte headed the opener just before the interval and substitute Gabriel Jesus sealed the victory deep in stoppage time for City, who returned to the league's summit for the first time since Dec. 8.

Both City and Liverpool have 62 points, but Pep Guardiola's side have played one game more than the Merseysiders, who have drawn their last two encounters and host Bournemouth on Saturday.

With Tottenham Hotspur on 57 points, the title race has turned into a genuine three-way tussle and while City rarely sparkled against Everton, it was a key win in a busy week in which they had already beaten Arsenal and host Chelsea on Sunday.

"Four or five days ago we could have been seven points behind, it is a lesson to never give up," said Guardiola.

"Now we have an incredible test on Sunday against Chelsea. I don't know how far we will get, maybe we will die in the road, but we are trying.

"We have played one more game than Liverpool, it's good to be top but Liverpool (still) has a game at Old Trafford," he added, referring to Liverpool's match at Manchester United on Feb. 24.

The game against Everton was a re-arranged fixture caused by City's advance to the League Cup final and highlighted the difficulties to come for a side still involved in four competitions as there were some signs of weariness in their display.

Everton manager Marco Silva left two of his main creative players, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Richarlison, on the bench and opted for three central midfielders -- a tactic that worked well as his side closed down City and limited their control of possession.

Yet after all that good work, it was Everton's sloppiness at set-pieces which cost them yet again.

David Silva curled in a free kick from the left and Laporte was somehow left unattended to head home from close-range.

The goal was the 17th conceded by Everton from a set-piece in all competitions this season -- prompting further questions about Silva's insistence on zonal marking.

After the break ninth-placed Everton, who had been well beaten at home by Wolves on Saturday, stuck at their task well, but for all their graft they rarely threatened City's lead.

The home side did get a sniff of an opening when Kyle Walker, deep in his own half, gave the ball away to substitute Richarlison, but the Brazilian's pass towards Cenk Tosun was over-hit and the danger passed.

It was a sign of City's strength in depth that their substitutes combined for the second goal deep in stoppage time with Kevin De Bruyne playing Jesus in on goal.

Although the Brazilian's shot was blocked by Everton keeper Jordan Pickford, he reacted quickly to head home the loose ball.

"Everyone (helped) win the game," said Jesus.

"We know that it is going to be difficult. We want to play well in every game and at the end of the season we want the title," he said.

Man City go top of the Premier League with win at Everton

Everton must stick with under-fire Marco Silva if they believe in his ability as there are no guarantees that a new manager can come in and improve results immediately, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has said.

Everton invested heavily on new players in the close season but results have hardly matched expectations, with Silva's side managing three wins in their last 12 Premier League games to heap pressure on the Portuguese.

"My advice... if they believe in the project, if they believe in him, they have to move forward with him," Guardiola told reporters ahead of Wednesday's trip to Goodison Park.

"Nobody assures you a new manager is going to do better."

Guardiola did not enjoy success at City until his second campaign when he won the league title and the League Cup last season and stressed the need for clubs like Everton to keep faith in their managers.

"It's difficult to create, to build something. You need time, it takes time. So it depends if they trust (Silva) or not," Guardiola added.

"The people don't know how difficult it is to create teams. People believe I buy three or four players, a new manager, and everything fits perfectly. Sometimes it takes time."

City are second in the table with 59 points from 25 games, seven places above Everton.

Premier League leaders Liverpool have the quality to end their anxious wait for a first league title since 1990, but must stick together to hold off champions Manchester City, according to West Ham United skipper Mark Noble.

A sluggish Liverpool were held 1-1 by West Ham on Monday to reach 62 points from 25 games, with their lead over City reduced to three points.

The draw followed a similar result for the Merseyside club against Leicester City last week and Noble suggested Juergen Klopp's side could be faltering due to their own high expectations.

"It's just that Liverpool want to win that league so much," Noble told Sky Sports. "They've got a great chance of doing it but the fans have just got to stick by them, keep supporting them because it is going to be tough.

"Especially when you're leading and you're top and everyone is chasing you and you know City are not going to rest for one game. You need to stick together.

"But I'm pretty sure they're going to be fine. They've got a fantastic squad of players and a world-class manager.

"It's going to be a fantastic end to the season to watch because there's going to be so many twists and turns."

Sergio Aguero's hat-trick led Manchester City to a 3-1 win over Arsenal on Sunday and back into second place in the Premier League, two points behind leaders Liverpool.

The victory put the pressure on Liverpool ahead off their trip to West Ham United on Monday. Juergen Klopp's side have 61 points with champions City on 59 and Tottenham Hotspur on 57.

Aguero gave City the lead after 48 seconds with a stooping header after Aymeric Laporte had robbed Alex Iwobi and whipped in a cross.

City were dominant but the Gunners got back on level terms in the 11th minute when Nacho Monreal flicked on a Lucas Torreira corner and defender Laurent Koscielny headed in from two yards out.

Aguero struck again just before the break, tapping in a low cross from Raheem Sterling, who had combined well with Ilkay Gundogan in the build-up.

City's record scorer wrapped up the win with Sterling again the provider but as Aguero slid in to meet his low cross, the ball appeared to go in off his arm.

It was Aguero's 10th hat-trick in the Premier League, a record bettered only by Alan Shearer who scored 11. The Argentine striker has netted 20 goals in all competitions this season -- the sixth straight campaign he has reached that tally.

Manchester City, Liverpool look for fresh impetus after Premier League stumbles

Premier League spending in the January transfer window fell for the first time since 2012 after three of the top six clubs decided not to add players to the squad, according to a Deloitte report published on Friday.

Thursday's deadline day spending accounted for 50 million pounds ($65.49 million) -- bringing the month's spending to 180 million pounds.

That is less than half of January 2018 spending of 430 million pounds, which included Liverpool signing Virgil van Dijk from Southampton for a world record deal fee for a defender.

The top six Premier League clubs - Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United - accounted for 43 percent of expenditure, lower than January last year when this figure stood at 62 percent.

Tottenham are set to play the entire 2018-19 campaign without recruiting players, having failed to add new faces over the last two transfer windows.

Liverpool, United, Everton and Southampton also chose not to sign anyone in January.

"With central distributions to clubs now likely to remain around current levels until at least the end of the 2021-22 season, clubs are potentially taking a more long-term view to their transfer strategies," Tim Bridge, director in the Sports Business Group at Deloitte, said.

January spending was at 225 million pounds in 2011 but fell to 60 million pounds in the following year.

This year's biggest transfer move of the January window came from Chelsea, who spent 55 million pounds for Christian Pulisic from Borussia Dortmund.

For the first time since 2005, Newcastle United broke their transfer record to sign Paraguayan playmaker Miguel Almiron from Major League Soccer side Atlanta United for 20 million pounds.

Wolverhampton Wanderers completed the signing of Atletico Madrid full back Jonny Otto for 15 million pounds after a successful loan spell.

Defending champions Manchester City signed Hajduk Split midfielder Ante Palaversa for 7 million pounds and loaned him back to the Croatian side.

The Deloitte report also confirmed that clubs in the bottom six of the standings recorded spending of 20 million pounds, compared to 90 million pounds in the same period last year.

Premier League: Newcastle shock Man City, Liverpool take control of title race

Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola said that his side might need to win all of their remaining Premier League games if they are to successfully retain the title.

"I don't know what we should do to win the title. I'm pretty sure we will have to win a lot of tough games and tomorrow is the first one so with that I am agreeing," said Guardiola in a press conference.

"They (Liverpool) are not going to drop too many points in the Premier League so they are going to demand to be there and all that we can do is be there," he added.

Guardiola believes that due to massive competition, 90 above league points are needed to win the title.

Man City are currently second in the Premier League table, four points behind league leaders Liverpool, but could close to within a single point if they beat Newcastle on Tuesday.

"I don't know what they (Liverpool) think. I'm not in the locker room with Jurgen Klopp and I think he's not going to invite me to be there so really, I don't know. All we can do is win our games and they feel that Manchester City is always there, is always there."

"It's all that we can do for ourselves and of course to let them feel that we are there. So I think it's normal," he concluded.

Pep Guardiola: Need to let Liverpool 'feel we are there'

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany has not played enough games in the past few seasons to warrant a new contract despite his invaluable contributions to the Premier League club's success, manager Pep Guardiola has said.

Kompany, whose contract ends this season, has missed numerous games due to muscle injuries in the past few seasons and Guardiola said a contract extension is something the club will have to discuss with the player and his agent.

"He's incredible, but the reality is in the last five years he's played few, really few," Guardiola told reporters ahead of Tuesday's league trip to Newcastle United.

"We don't have any doubts about his quality, we miss him when he is not able to play. He's important, he is our captain and on the field he gives us extra that few central defenders around the world can give us.

"That is the situation we have to put on the table and the club will discuss it with his agent and make the best decision for both."

Kompany has been at the club since 2008 and has won seven major trophies, including three league titles, but Guardiola said any decision to extend the Belgium defender's contract should not be made on sentiment alone.

"The club knows the sentimental issue is so important," Guardiola added. "It's not important for making decisions, but they have to feel, especially for the players who have been here a long time and helped us to build what we are right now.

"At the same time, there is a moment when it's over for everybody."

Manchester City continued their impressive scoring spree to rout Burnley 5-0 in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday and make it 30 goals and seven straight wins in three separate competitions since the turn of the year.

Another Premier League side, Wolves, required a 93rd-minute equaliser from Matt Doherty to draw 2-2 with League One Shrewsbury Town while Newport County, from League Two, also scored in stoppage time against Championship (second-tier) side Middlesbrough to clinch a 1-1 draw that also means a replay.

There was, though, never much chance of a shock at the Etihad from the moment Gabriel Jesus put City ahead with a fine strike after 23 minutes. Bernardo Silva, Kevin De Bruyne and Sergio Aguero also scored, with a Kevin Long own goal completing the demolition.

The win -- City's eighth in succession since losing to Leicester on Boxing Day -- comes three days after they reached Wembley in the League Cup and means Pep Guardiola's side, who trail leaders Liverpool by four points in the Premier League, are competing for trophies on four fronts.

"It is our eighth victory in a row and of course we have scored a lot of goals," said Guardiola, who is seeking City's first FA Cup trophy since 2011.

Everyone wants to help the team but there is always something to improve -- today they (Burnley) had one or two chances which we gave them."

Four-times winners Wolves will be delighted to have secured a replay after fighting back from two goals down against a side who are 54 places below them in the English football pyramid.

Defeat would have been doubly embarrassing because Shrewsbury are managed by Sam Ricketts, a former Wolves captain who was a regular member of the side that won the League One title in 2014.

Ricketts seemed to have hatched the perfect gameplan when goals from Greg Docherty and Luke Waterfall had the home fans anticipating a rare foray into the fifth round but Wolves, who knocked out Liverpool in the third round, fought back with goals from Raul Jimenez and Doherty to keep their names in the hat for Monday's draw.

"Our players can take a lot from that," said Ricketts. "Neither side will have wanted a replay but we will have another game. Don't write us off yet, we went to Stoke and won in a replay."

Newport will also approach their replay full of hope after thrilling their 1,200 travelling fans with a scrambled equaliser from Matthew Dolan, a former Boro academy player who never played a first-team game for the club.

The replay ensures a return home for Tony Pulis, who hails from the same Newport suburb as County manager Michael Flynn. The Welsh club, who beat Premier League side Leicester City in the previous round, are seeking to reach the fifth round for the first time since 1949.

Newcastle and Watford made clear where the cup ranks in their list of priorities by making 18 changes between them for their all-Premier League meeting at St James' Park, which the visitors won 2-0 with goals from Andre Gray and Isaac Success. It is only the second time in 10 seasons that Watford have got this far.

Brighton & Hove Albion could only draw 0-0 at home to Championship side West Bromwich Albion while League One side Doncaster Rovers reached the fifth round for the first time in 63 years after beating League Two Oldham 2-1 with two goals from Ben Whiteman, his winner a controversial penalty in injury time.

League One side Portsmouth have an impressive FA Cup tradition and remain in the reckoning after their 1-1 draw with QPR, for whom Nahki Wells equalised Lee Brown's opener.

Oli McBurnie scored twice as Championship side Swansea beat Gillingham, of League One, 4-1.

Manchester City rout Burnley in FA Cup as Shrews scare Wolves

Manchester City full-back Benjamin Mendy has recovered from a knee injury and will return to the squad for the second leg of their League Cup semi-final at Burton Albion on Wednesday, manager Pep Guardiola said.

Mendy, 24, last played in a 3-1 league win over neighbours Manchester United in November but has missed 16 games after undergoing surgery on his left knee.

He was expected to return to action in February but the France international stepped up his recovery and Guardiola hoped he would play a role in the "last part of the season".

"(Mendy is) in the squad for tomorrow. He will travel with us. Maybe on the bench," Guardiola told reporters on Tuesday.

Guardiola, however, was unable to confirm a return date for club captain Vincent Kompany, who suffered a muscle injury earlier this month.

"Kompany is not okay. A little injury, he is not fit," Guardiola added of the central defender. "He is coming back but I don't know when."

City hold a 9-0 lead over the League One (third-tier) side from the first leg and Guardiola sees the return leg as an opportunity for fringe players to see some action but added that regular midfielder Kevin De Bruyne would play a part.

"(De Bruyne) is going to play. Players who need to play, who haven't played lately, who are coming back from injury long-term are going to play," the Spaniard said.

"We are going to play Phil (Foden)... a few (academy players), two or three. A few on the bench."

Mendy back for Burton clash, Kompany return uncertain

After their defeat by title rivals Manchester City earlier this month, Premier League leaders Liverpool could ill-afford another slip-up at home to Crystal Palace but trailing 1-0 at the break they had to face up to that possibility.

Former Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson had set Palace up perfectly to do a similar job to the one the south London side delivered in their victory at Manchester City last month.

A deep back-four protected by a defensive five-man midfield was disciplined and designed to frustrate but the ever dangerous Wilfried Zaha and the under-rated Andros Townsend offered a threat on the counter-attack.

The pair combined for Townsend's goal to put Palace 1-0 up and leave Liverpool coach Juergen Klopp with some work to do in the dressing room at the break.

Whatever he said certainly had an impact -- it took 47 seconds for Mo Salah to get Liverpool level and, even after Palace levelled the game at 2-2, the Egyptian was on hand to profit from keeper Julian Speroni's error and put them 3-2 up.

“We talked to each other (at halftime) that we had to be strong mentally because this is a tough time," said Mohamed Salah.

“This is the most important time for us, when you are struggling you have to be strong in mind, so we talked together and the manager also gave us information and we played well and we deserved the game," he said.

NO COMPLACENCY

The 26-year-old added that there was no question of Liverpool, whose performance was far from their best, being complacent against lowly Palace.

“We expected before the game that it was going to be very difficult," said Salah, who has now reached the milestone of 50 Premier League goals in 72 appearances.

“First half they played well and they played well also (in the) second half but they were staying (close) to the box and it was a tough game. But in the end the most important thing for us is the result and we got a good result.

“We conceded three goals, it’s hard a little bit but we have to accept it. This is football and we have to live with that," added the league's top scorer with 16 goals.

Klopp expected to see a fighting approach from his side, who mvoed a provisional seven points clear at the top.

"Nobody should be surprised by the character of the boys. If something was here before I came in, it was character.

"Outstanding character and the work rate was always there and we have to mix it in with a few more elements. The boys are ready to fight for all. It was not the first moment we had to show it but it was pretty special," he said.

Liverpool showed 'mental strength' says goal hero Mohamed Salah

Gabriel Jesus took his tally to seven goals in three games with a double as Manchester City beat 10-man Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-0 to cut Premier League leaders Liverpool's advantage to four points on Monday.

The Brazilian tapped in after 10 minutes and struck again from the penalty spot before the break after Wolves had been reduced to 10 men as Willy Boly was shown a straight red card.

After back-to-back league defeats during the Christmas fixtures, City have now won five matches in a row in all competitions, racking up 24 goals in the process, and look primed to give chase to Juergen Klopp's Liverpool.

With Tottenham Hotspur losing on Sunday, it now looks a two-horse race to win the Premier League with Liverpool on 57 points and City on 53 from 22 games. Tottenham have 48.

"We have played a lot of time with 10 against 11 and we should be more aggressive in our attacking play, but we have a lot of matches in our minds and our legs," City manager Pep Guardiola, perhaps disappointed not to boost his side's goals tally further, said

"We were solid and didn't give away many chances so it is three points to keep the pressure on the team at the top."

City, who have now scored 99 goals in all competitions this season, knew only a victory would suffice after Liverpool's weekend win at Brighton & Hove Albion and they needed only 10 minutes to go ahead at the Etihad Stadium.

Aymeric Laporte played a superb pass to release Leroy Sane down the left channel and his cross was perfect for Jesus to score with a simple finish in front of goal.

What was already a tough assignment for Wolves became a seemingly impossible one nine minutes later when Boly launched into a tackle on Bernardo Silva and won the ball but also left the City midfielder rolling around with his follow through.

Wolves had a rare breakaway and perhaps should have equalised when Raul Jimenez burst forward and played in Jonathan Castro Otto who just failed to pick out the unmarked Jota when a shot at goal would have been a better option.

Shortly afterwards at the other end Raheem Sterling was sent sprawling in the area by Ryan Bennett and Jesus converted the penalty and there was no way back for Wolves.

To their credit Wolves were diligent in defence after the break and restricted City's chances although they did concede again when substitute Kevin de Bruyne whipped in a cross that glanced in off Wolves' Conor Coady.

City racked up 870 passes to the 271 of Wolves and such was their control that keeper Ederson joined in upfield during one passage of play in the second half.

Wolves remain in 11th spot and boss Nuno Espirito Santo had no complaints, agreeing with the decision to send off Boly.

"Not only the red card changed the game, but the way we conceded with a long pass," he said.

"The red card makes the task much harder. You know it is difficult to stop them but you try to avoid certain situations and it was a 30-yard pass so we must improve. But you do not make a game plan with one less man."

Manchester City ease past 10-man Wolves to cut gap at top

Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola has defended his side's youth development record after academy graduate Brahim Diaz left for Real Madrid, saying he only wants to work with players who are committed to the club.

The 19-year-old Diaz completed a move to the Spanish capital on Monday, following in the footsteps of English winger Jadon Sancho, who left City in 2017 for Borussia Dortmund to make a huge impact in the German Bundesliga.

City failed to keep both players at the Etihad Stadium due to a lack of first-team opportunities but Guardiola said youngsters must be patient if they are to make a breakthrough at any of the Europe's elite clubs.

"They win the opportunity (to play) on the field but you have to take a look at all the big clubs in Europe how many young players are in the first team," Guardiola told a news conference ahead of City's League Cup semi-final first-leg against Burton Albion on Wednesday.

"The young players need time. David Silva, for example, was loaned to others before he became what he is right now, before he came us. Some have patience, some trust what the club want to do, and some don't."

England under-21 playmaker Phil Foden committed his long-term future to City last month, having received a public backing from Guardiola this season.

"Like I said many times, I don't want people that don't want to stay here," the Spanish coach added.

"We did with Brahim everything we have done with Phil (Foden) and with Jadon - important players and we did absolutely everything. The only one who decides to stay is Phil."

Foden is set to feature against Burton with Guardiola having almost his full squad available to cope with the demands of the Premier League and domestic cup competitions this month.

Guardiola said French full back Benjamin Mendy, who is on the sidelines with a knee injury, could return to first-team action in two-to-three weeks.

"He's training alone," Guardiola added. "Two weeks, three weeks maybe (until he returns). Everybody else is fit."

City will return to league action against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday as they continue to chase Liverpool, who are four points clear at the top of the table.

Don't want players who don't want to play for Manchester City, Pep Guardiola defends Brahim Diaz departure

Premier League champions Manchester City began their FA Cup campaign with a 7-0 thrashing of Rotherham on Sunday but Fulham, battling to avoid relegation from the Premier League, were beaten 2-1 by fourth-tier Oldham.

Barnet ensured there would be a non-league presence in the fourth round with a 1-0 win away to second-tier Championship club Sheffield United.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola may have made eight changes from the team that beat Premier League leaders Liverpool on Thursday but still fielded a strong side for the visit of Championship club Rotherham, with Raheem Sterling, Riyad Mahrez and Gabriel Jesus all starting as playmaker Kevin De Bruyne returned from injury.

De Bruyne played in Sterling for a 12th-minute opener and City then scored twice in the closing stages of the first half.

Phil Foden, the England Under-21 international, got on the end of a cross from Ilkay Gundogan in the 43rd minute before Rotherham defender Semi Ajayi turned the ball into his own net.

Jesus made it 4-0 early in the second half before Mahrez, Nicolas Otamendi and Leroy Sane added further goals.

Denis Odoi put Fulham ahead in the 52nd minute at Craven Cottage but Sam Sturridge drew Oldham level with a penalty before Callum Lang's header two minutes from time sealed a comeback win.

Daniel Iversen compounded Fulham's misery by saving an Aleksandar Mitrovic penalty just moments earlier.

Elsewhere, Barnet beat Championship high-flyers Sheffield United thanks to Shaquile Coulthirst's 21st-minute penalty.

Watford manager Javi Gracia changed his entire starting side from the team that drew 3-3 at Bournemouth, with Venezuela forward Adalberto Penaranda making his Hornets debut against non-league Woking.

But hopes of Woking, 110 places adrift of the Hornets, enjoying a shock win suffered a setback when Will Hughes curled in a 13th-minute shot from the edge of the area.

Watford made it 2-0 16 minutes from time when Troy Deeney scored from close range.

Millwall came from a goal down to beat Championship rivals Hull 2-1, substitute Shane Ferguson scoring twice inside the closing eight minutes.

QPR beat Championship leaders Leeds by the same scoreline, Jake Bidwell scoring a 75th-minute winner for the west London club.

Fourth-tier Newport County are at home to Premier League Leicester in Sunday's 1630 GMT kick-off.

On Saturday, FA Cup holders Chelsea cruised to a 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest in what seems certain to have been Cesc Fabregas's final match for the Blues.

It was the same scoreline as Manchester United beat Reading to make it five wins out of five under caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Arsenal, the record 13-times FA Cup winners, won 3-0 at Blackpool, West Ham beat Birmingham 2-0 but Everton had to work hard to see off Lincoln 2-1.

Saturday also saw Championship club Bristol City beat top-flight basement club Huddersfield 1-0.

Elsewhere, in an all-Premier League clash, Brighton won 3-1 away to south coast rivals Bournemouth.

Second division Derby, managed by former England midfielder Frank Lampard, came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Premier League strugglers Southampton.

Newcastle were also held to a draw, 1-1 against second-tier Blackburn.

Premier League leaders Liverpool will complete a third round that started with Tottenham's 7-0 thrashing of Tranmere on Friday when they travel to top-flight rivals Wolves on Monday.

Manchester City score seven in FA Cup stroll, Oldham knock out Fulham

Things we learned from Manchester City vs Liverpool

The four-point lead Liverpool have at the top of the Premier League even after a 2-1 defeat to rivals Manchester City on Thursday was still impressive given their lack of title-winning experience, according to manager Juergen Klopp.

The match in Manchester was billed by many as an early title decider, where a Liverpool victory would have given them a 10-point lead at the top with 17 games to go, having played City home and away.

However, goals from Sergio Aguero and Leroy Sane, either side of a Robert Firmino equaliser, ended Liverpool's unbeaten Premier League season and moved City to within touching distance of top spot.

"I have so much faith in players you cannot imagine," Klopp said. "If somebody would have said after both games against Man City that we would have had a four point lead I would have paid good money for this, as I thought it was not possible.

"If we would have won the title five times in the last 10 years, then things would be different. We don't have the experience like this. We are still in a very good position so I have happy for this.

"I knew that City could beat us, that is not new. They beat us 5-0 last year. It did not have anything to do with mental strength on one side or the other. It was just unlucky."

Klopp was also unhappy with one decision that did not go his side's way, when City captain Vincent Kompany received only a yellow card for a lunge at Mohamed Salah, a decision Klopp was not in agreement with.

"I loved him (Kompany) already when he was at Hamburg," Klopp added. "But situations like this happen. A player goes to ground, and he took the risk. If Mo (Salah) is on his feet, not jumping, then we all know what happen. Mo can go through. I don't blame anybody.

"We were here last season there was a red card (against Mane), and nobody thought about it. Yes it was red card, but did he want it? He did not even see him? Kompany saw him, hit him, and you can make your own opinion."

Juergen Klopp says he would have paid for four point lead over Manchester City

Manchester City topped Liverpool 2-1 in a thriller but City boss Pep Guardiola admitted that his clubs's title challenge could have come to an end on Thursday.

Sergio Aguero put City in front just before the break only for Roberto Firmino to level midway though the second half before Leroy Sane struck the winner in the 72nd minute.

After winning the match, Guardiola hailed his "incredible" squad as the champions cut the gap at the top to four points.

"It's a good moment to congratulate, to say thank you to these incredible players for what they have done in 16 months, and today they show(ed) for everybody how good they are, which hurt they play, against an incredible team," he told reporters.

He further added, "I think it was a good spectacle and both teams played to win, and nothing - so it's not a final, it was a final for us because losing today (the title race) was almost over, and winning today we are already there so now the Premier League is tight again so we'll see what happens in the future, relax, rest because in three days we have another big test in the FA Cup."

Pep Guardiola's reaction after Manchester City defeat leaders Liverpool 2-1

The 11-centimetre portion of the ball that Manchester City defender John Stones kept from crossing the goal line on a Liverpool chance in the first half turned out to be decisive here Thursday as the Premier League defending champions defeated the current leaders 2-1.

The match at Manchester's Etihad Stadium had the atmosphere and intensity of a final.

For Liverpool, it was not only the first loss of the Premier League season but it was also their first time conceding more than one goal.

City, meanwhile, delivered a brilliant performance after losing three of their last five Premier League matches and dropping to third place behind Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.

The result lifts City to second place with 50 points, 4 behind the Reds and 2 ahead of Spurs.

The play that may have decided the contest came in the 18th minute, as Mo Salah found Sadio Mane in the area with a deft pass and the Senegal international went for goal.

Mane's strike bounced off the post, but Stones' attempt to clear collided with goalkeeper Ederson and the ball bounced back toward the goal as Salah was closing in.

Stones somehow managed to get his foot to the ball before it completely crossed the line. The goal-line technology system found that all but 11cm of the ball made it over the line.

Five minutes before the break, Sergio Agüero scored from a seemingly impossible angle to give City a 1-0 lead and set off pandemonium at the Etihad.

Roberto Firmino brought the visitors level in the 64th minute, heading in unmarked from the far post on a cross from Andrew Robertson.

A re-energized Liverpool looked set to take command until the 72nd minute when a City counter led to a beautiful goal by Leroy Sane to put the hosts ahead to stay.

Man City end Liverpool's unbeaten run, cut lead to four

Manchester City's hopes of retaining the Premier League title will not be over even if they lose to leaders Liverpool on Thursday, according to captain Vincent Kompany.

City are currently in third place with 47 points, seven points behind table-toppers Liverpool, and a defeat would give the Merseyside club a 10-point advantage in the title race.

"It's easy for everybody to assume that everything rests on this game," Kompany told the British media.

"I'm probably one of the only ones that disagrees, for the simple fact that we only had three games that we were below standard."

Liverpool are unbeaten in the league so far while City have lost three games with all defeats coming in December. The champions have lost against Chelsea, Crystal Palace and Leicester City.

"When you are 10 points behind... if there are not many teams between you and first, it only takes one team to start having a bad month and you will be back in," he added.

City came from behind to overhaul rivals Manchester United and win the title in 2011-12 season, even though they were eight points behind after 32 games.

"We overcame eight points in six games in the past," he added. "To be honest, I don`t live with that scenario in my head, of what happens if we lose.

"The moment I have to face the situation, at that moment I`ll see what the options are."

Title race not over even if Liverpool beat Manchester City, says captain Kompany

Manchester City showed they are willing to accept the challenge of Liverpool in the race for the Premier League title with a 3-1 win away to Southampton on Sunday.

Following shock defeats by Crystal Palace and Leicester, reigning champions City cut the gap between themselves and Premier League leaders Liverpool to seven points ahead of their meeting with the Merseysiders at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday.

But they allowed a limited Southampton side back into the game after a dominating start, which suggests there are still frailties for Liverpool to exploit.

David Silva put City ahead after 10 minutes but they passed up a number of chances to add to the lead and gifted Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg an equaliser in the 37th minute.

For a period, Pep Guardiola's side looked fragile, but a James Ward-Prowse own-goal and a header by Sergio Aguero just before half-time restored their confidence.

Saints' frustrations boiled over with a red card for Hojbjerg after a wild challenge on Fernandinho late in the game.

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl sprang a surprise in his team selection by giving a debut to 18-year-old former Chelsea starlet Kayne Ramsay at right-back.

City should have gone ahead in the fifth minute when Jack Stephens allowed Raheem Sterling to steal possession and set up David Silva.

But the City man tried to be too deliberate, with his shot blocked by goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.

But Saints could also have taken a more surprising lead after eight minutes when Mohamed Elyounoussi's clever flick over the City defence sent Charlie Austin clear.

Austin's first touch, however, was dreadful and sent the ball into Ederson's grateful arms.

Instead of being a goal up, the home side were behind within a minute.

The left side of their defence was opened up with ease by a simple one-two, leaving Bernardo Silva clear of full-back Matt Targett and free to advance down the right. He had all the time he wanted to pick out the unmarked David Silva, who hit the ball first-time past McCarthy.

Riyad Mahrez then shot wide after a move that began with City playing a series of passes inside their own penalty area.

And Aguero squandered an excellent chance in the 25th minute, hitting his shot against McCarthy after Sterling had accelerated past the hapless Targett.

But overplaying at the other end almost proved City's undoing.

Ederson was nearly caught by Austin before dribbling round the striker. But he showed a mastery of the more conventional goalkeeping arts on the half-hour with a diving save to keep out Austin's glancing header from a corner by Ward-Prowse.

City did not heed the warning and Saints were level after 36 minutes.

Oleksandr Zinchenko was slow to see Hojbjerg closing in on him and the Southampton captain robbed the Ukraine defender and strode forward before lashing the ball in from 15 yards.

City double stuns Saints

Zinchenko could count himself lucky that referee Paul Tierney did not see his barge on Ward-Prowse after 44 minutes as a penalty.

And the home crowd were still complaining about that decision when City retook the lead on the stroke of half-time.

Sterling forced his way down the left and fired in a low cross that hit the foot of Ward-Prowse and zipped between the surprised McCarthy and his near post.

And the crowd's disbelief was complete three minutes into first-half stoppage time when Aguero rose unchallenged by Jan Bednarek to nod Zinchenko's cross under McCarthy.

In the second half both sides went through the motions. City had the points they needed and Southampton were happy to avoid further damage to their confidence and goal difference. But even then City could have had three or four more goals.

Sterling shot straight at McCarthy, Aguero hit the angle of the post and crossbar, and Mahrez blasted straight at the goalkeeper.

Frustration got the better of Hojbjerg, who launched into a scissors-style challenge on Fernandinho and was rightly sent off.

Manchester City stop the rot against Southampton

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said that "it's a big challenge" to show whether he good or not as a manager ahead of their league match at Southampton on Sunday.

While addressing media, he said, "I wouldn't say I like to be in this situation, but I know it's common in football, your career and I like to handle it. I will see. I proved myself, I am good to help them to help each other, to see it come back (to) who we are."

Guardiola said three defeats in four Premier League games gave him the opportunity to prove himself as a manager.

Sometimes I’m so angry losing, and also the opposite. It’s about working harder and harder.

Pep Guardiola insists he won't change philosophy despite Manchester City's poor form

Manchester City slumped to a shock 2-1 defeat by Leicester City on Wednesday as Ricardo Pereira's superb late strike condemned the champions to a second successive Premier League loss.

But four minutes late City, beaten 3-2 by Crystal Palace last time out, were in front after 14 minutes when Bernardo Silva finished with his left foot after being played through by Sergio Aguero.r Leicester were back on level terms after Marc Albrighton met Jamie Vardy's cross with his head from close range.

Leicester's defence held tight despite an onslaught from City, with Fabian Delph and Aguero both missing good chances.

Pep Guardiola's team were made to pay for those spurned opportunities as Ricardo unleashed an unstoppable shot into the top left corner beyond Ederson less than 10 minutes from time.

Things went from bad to worse for City as Delph was shown a straight red for following through in a challenge on Ricardo, capping a miserable afternoon for Pep Guardiola's team who slipped to third in the table.

"It was a similar performance to the Crystal Palace game, we started well but conceded a goal the first time they arrived in our box. Mentally we are lacking confidence in that situation," Guardiola told the BBC.

"We have to accept it, we have to realise that we have to work harder and try to get immediately one good result and get our confidence back.

"Of course, we are worried (about not keeping clean sheets), the result is what counts, we lost."

Leicester manager Claude Puel was facing questions about his future at the club before Saturday's win over Chelsea.

"A good Boxing Day! We know when you play Chelsea and City it's difficult to have the ball but you must have this mentality to defend together and try to use good recovery and fast passes to break," he said.

"We deserved this result. We had more chances than them. We changed the system to get a better balance in the team and it is a fantastic result for this team."
