Juventus maintained their record-breaking start to the Serie A season with a 1-0 win over AS Roma that ensured they will go into the winter break on top of the table.

Mario Mandzukic struck a first-half winner to hand Juve their 16th win in 17 games, restoring their eight-point advantage over second-placed Napoli with two rounds to go before the halfway point of the season.

A 1-1 draw with Genoa in October is the only blot on Juventus's otherwise perfect record, which is the best start that has ever been made to a Serie A season and one that has only been matched in Europe's top five leagues by Barcelona in 2012-13 and Manchester City in 2017-18.

A trademark back-post header from Mandzukic opened the scoring on 35 minutes, as the Croatia international rose above Davide Santon to power the ball into the net.

Roma goalkeeper Robin Olsen made a string of saves to keep his side in the game, twice denying Cristiano Ronaldo in quick succession in the second half.

However, the capital club rarely threatened to find an equaliser and substitute Douglas Costa thought he had sealed the points for Juventus with his close-range finish in stoppage time, only for the goal to be disallowed for a foul in the build-up following a pitch-side VAR review.

Juventus sit on the summit of the table with 49 points from a possible 51, eight points clear of Napoli on 41, while the defeat sees Roma drop to 10th place and continues a poor run of form for Eusebio Di Francesco's side.

Roma have won just one of their last seven games and Saturday's defeat marked their eighth consecutive loss at the Juventus Stadium in Turin.

Mario Mandzukic on target as relentless Juventus beat Roma

Manchester City stumbled to the most unexpected defeat of the Premier League season on Saturday before neighbours Manchester United began their brave new world under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with a glorious reminder of long-forgotten attacking swagger.

After City's sensational 3-2 reverse against Crystal Palace at their Etihad fortress, United seemed liberated and re-energised after Jose Mourinho's midweek sacking as they romped to a 5-1 win at Cardiff City -- the first time they have hit five in the league since the final match of the golden Alex Ferguson era in 2013.

A remarkable 30-metre thunderbolt from Andros Townsend adorned Palace's comeback from a goal down in the rain as Pep Guardiola's champions City saw their 100 per cent league home record this season shattered.

So, what recently looked like an imperious title defence now looks problematic as City lie four points behind leaders Liverpool, who had thrown down the gauntlet with a 2-0 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday.

There was more good news for the Reds as fourth-placed Chelsea also squandered their unbeaten home record with a 1-0 defeat by Leicester City.

Arsenal kept up their pursuit in fifth, thanks to a double from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in a 3-1 home win over Burnley that put the Gabonese striker top of the league's goalscoring charts.

After 18 matches, Liverpool are now the only unbeaten side left in England's top four divisions on 48 points, with City on 44 and Tottenham Hotspur, who visit Everton on Sunday, third on 39. Chelsea and Arsenal both have 37, while United are on 29.

On a remarkable, rain-sodden afternoon at the Etihad, Manchester City, who had lost their season's unbeaten record at Chelsea two weeks ago, seemed predictably dominant when striding into a first-half lead through Ilkay Gundogan.

But Palace responded quickly with a Jeffrey Schlupp strike and three minutes later a wondrous volley from 30 metres from the mercurial England international Townsend, an early contender for goal of the season.

Luka Milivojevic put the visitors further clear with a penalty after the break before Palace survived a late onslaught that saw Kevin De Bruyne score five minutes from time.

"It's complicated but we fight until the last second. We are in December and we will try and recover and try and win games again," shrugged Guardiola, conceding that his side needed to "recover mentally and recover physicality".

UNITED REBORN

In stark contrast, after a traumatic week which saw the end of Mourinho's two-and-a-half-year reign, Manchester United seemed mentally and physically re-born, playing with verve, pace and attacking intent that reflected the smile of their still fresh-faced caretaker boss and old club hero, Solskjaer.

He was beaming after three minutes when Marcus Rashford's free-kick put United ahead and further goals before halftime from Ander Herrera and Anthony Martial -- after a dazzling passing interchange -- and a second-half double from Jesse Lingard made it a perfect start for the Norwegian.

United, with Paul Pogba back in the fold, poured forward in a free-spirited manner rarely seen under Mourinho as Solskjaer lifted the gloom of United's worst start in 28 years.

"Football is easy if you have good players. This is such a great group of players. The quality is just unbelievable," the modest Solskjaer said, as both his team and ex-United players, headed by Wayne Rooney, all praised the instant 'Ole effect'.

Chelsea's loss at Stamford Bridge seemed almost as unlikely as Manchester City's with Leicester facing the prospect of a third straight defeat but Jamie Vardy's first-time finish soon after the break brought much-needed relief for the Foxes' manager Claude Puel.

At the Emirates Stadium, the predatory Aubameyang took his tally of league goals to 12 with his double in the win over Burnley, one more than Liverpool's Mohamed Salah.

Fulham earned a goalless draw at Newcastle United but remained bottom of the table on 10 points alongside Huddersfield Town, who were beaten 3-1 by a Southampton side that look rejuvenated under new Austrian manager Ralph Hasenhuettl.

Watford moved into seventh place with a 2-0 win at West Ham United, thanks to goals from Troy Deeney and Gerard Deulofeu.

Five-star Manchester United rediscover their swagger but City are stunned

Manchester City suffered their first home Premier League loss in eight months as a shock 3-2 defeat by Crystal Palace on Saturday left Pep Guardiola's champions trailing leaders Liverpool by four points.

City, who had won all nine home games in the league this season, are in second place on 44 points with Liverpool, who won 2-0 at Wolves on Friday, on 48.

Two defeats in three games for City, who lost at Chelsea a fortnight ago, have given Juergen Klopp's Liverpool the upper hand in the title race and turned the Jan. 3 clash between the sides at the Etihad into a real showdown.

City, sorely missing injured midfielder David Silva, looked ragged and panicked at times, but Palace and their manager Roy Hodgson deserve huge credit for a magnificent performance which included a brilliant goal by Andros Townsend.

Many teams better than Palace have been unable to find the recipe for beating Guardiola's side but the London side took their chances and defended resiliently to secure a victory that belies their 14th place in the table.

"Obviously, the result is a setback. We have lost but we are only looking at ourselves game to game," said City captain Fabian Delph.

"We had a few chances which we have put away in the past, but fair play to Crystal Palace - they were stubborn and organised.

"It's hard to analyse and we will go back to the drawing board and look at it," added the England full back.

It seemed to be business as usual for City after German midfielder Ilkay Gundogan nodded them in front in the 27th minute, meeting a Fabian Delph cross from deep with a firm, downward header.

But Jeffrey Schlupp brought Palace level with a low diagonal shot into the bottom corner and Townsend stunned the Etihad Stadium with a sensational volley that will surely be a goal of the season contender.

Bernardo Silva's header out was met first time by Townsend who blasted his volley from 30 metres past helpless City keeper Ederson who could do nothing about the perfect combination of technique and power from the former Spurs and Newcastle player.

The air of surprise at the Etihad turned to panic in the 51st minute when Palace went 3-1 up through a Luka Milivojevic penalty after Kyle Walker brought down Max Meyer with a wild challenge.

Guardiola brought on substitutes Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne and it was the Belgian midfielder who gave the home side hope with a cross-shot in the 85th minute that caught out Palace keeper Vicente Guaita.

Gabriel Jesus missed a stoppage-time chance when he headed over a De Bruyne cross from a promising position but City were left to taste their first home league loss since the Manchester derby on April 7.

Roy Hodgson's Palace had picked up just one point from their last six away games and had not won at City since 1990.

Barcelona head coach <a href="http://www.wionews.com/search?q=Ernesto+Valverde">Ernesto Valverde</a> said that his team will need to be well prepared to face a ''very dangerous'' Olympique Lyonnais ahead of their Champions League Round of 16.

He refused to underestimate Lyon that challenged Premier League club Manchester City in the group F.

Lyon defeated EPL champions 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium and draw their home match in UCL group stage.

Valverde said, "We will have to play against Olympique (Lyon) a team that challenged Manchester City the leadership of their group in the Champions League until the very last game."

"They also beat them in Manchester. We have not seen much of them so far, but I think they are very dangerous on the counter-attack. We will have time to study Olympique Lyon," he added.

The coach warned his players of Lyonnais' counter-attack and the French team's ability to pose danger to the opponent should they be offered the space they thrive in.

"When they play with space in the back they could be a very dangerous team. They are very fast and we have to be very careful."

"We will see what happens but we have to be ready," he concluded.

Barcelona is to visit Lyon on February 19 in the first leg, while the second leg is scheduled for March 13.

Brazil forward Gabriel Jesus scored a brace to help Manchester City beat Everton 3-1 on Saturday. By virtue of this win, City again made it to the top of the English Premier League.

The defending champion secured the home win to erase the memory of its first loss this season; 2-0 against Chelsea in the previous round.

City not only dominated the beginning of the game but its players squandered several scoring chances.

Jesus opened the scoring for his side after 22 minutes into the match with an accurate short-range shot inside the penalty area.

Everton fought to come from behind, but Jesus struck again with a second goal just five minutes into the second half off a header after his teammate Leroy Sane sent a cross from the left side.

Everton again tried to make a comeback as forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored, narrowing City's lead 15 minutes later off a header on a cross sent from the left side.

Later City's forward Raheem Sterling scored the third goal in the 69th minute, putting a header from a cross-shot in on the left side to seal the 3-1 win.

After this victory, Man City provisionally leads the Premier League standings with 44 points, two points ahead of second-placed Liverpool, which will host Manchester United Sunday.

Manchester City beats Everton 3-1, top Premier League

Manchester City's influential duo Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne are in contention to face Everton at home in the Premier League on Saturday, as they look to rebound from their first domestic defeat of the season last weekend.

City boss <a href="http://www.wionews.com/search?q=pep+Guardiola">Pep Guardiola</a> told a news conference on Friday that both players had come through training this week unscathed and might feature against a side City have not beaten at home in the last two seasons.

"He (Aguero) did the last two training sessions. On Thursday, he trained with the team. He has no pain and we will decide," Guardiola said.

"With KDB (De Bruyne), it is the same case as Sergio – he has no pain but we will see."

Ahead of a packed festive schedule with six games in the space of 20 days, City's squad may be stretched with David Silva, Danilo, Benjamin Mendy and Claudio Bravo all sidelined.

Defender John Stones was forced off in City's 2-1 win over Hoffenheim in the Champions League on Wednesday and his fitness will be assessed ahead of the weekend.

Yet Guardiola said the mounting injury list would not force the club into the transfer market in January.

"No, we are not going to sign anyone," he said of his second-placed side, who sit one point behind unbeaten leaders Liverpool.

They will reclaim top spot for at least 24 hours by securing a point against Everton, with Liverpool playing City's rivals Manchester United on Sunday.

Yet Guardiola was wary of the threat posed by seventh-place Everton, having drawn his last two home matches with the side now led by the attack-minded coach Marco Silva.

"We make good games but we didn't win, we dropped four points," the Spaniard said.

"Tomorrow is another game, the Everton team has changed completely with (Gylfi) Sigurdsson and Richarlison, (Lucas) Digne and Yerry Mina - it is a top side.

"I'm really impressed with how they have done so far. It will be a tough, tough game..."

Their task will be made easier should the club's record goalscorer Aguero return to the line-up.

The Argentine has been out since the beginning of the month with a muscle injury.

In that time, City have scored seven goals in four matches in all competitions - a relatively modest tally for a side who notched a record 106 strikes in the league last season.

Pep Guardiola boosted by timely return of Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne

The alleged racist abuse of Manchester City's Raheem Sterling by Chelsea fans has rekindled bitter memories for his club mate Ilkay Guendogan, who suffered similar treatment during the World Cup earlier this year.

Sterling was shouted at by supporters behind the goal in City's 2-0 Premier League defeat last Saturday and Chelsea later banned four fans from matches pending a police investigation.

Guendogan, who is of Turkish descent, said he can empathise, having faced jeers in warm-up games ahead of the World Cup after he and former international team mate Mesut Ozil were photographed with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan.

Ozil quit international soccer in July following Germany's group-stage exit in Russia citing "racism and disrespect", but Guendogan has continued to play for the national team.

"It's not easy because I lived it in the summer as well. I know how that feels and it hurts," Guendogan told reporters.

"This is obviously something that doesn't belong anywhere in the world ... we have no other choice but to stay strong and try to go through that period and try to do our best on the pitch. Yeah, to keep being successful, that's what matters."

Sterling, however, did not take the alleged abuse lying down and posted a statement on Instagram last Sunday in which he said newspapers were fuelling racism in soccer due to their negative portrayal of young black players.

His comments were echoed by the Professional Footballers' Association and former players.

"I think he (Sterling) got a lot of support this week," Guendogan said. "I think the way Chelsea reacted was good.

"It's something we all have to fight."

Ilkay Guendogan feels Man City team mate Sterling's pain

Maurizio Sarri has described the alleged racist abuse of Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling by Chelsea fans as "disgusting" and condemned discrimination in any form in his first public comments on the incident.

Chelsea said on Monday they had banned four supporters from their matches pending a police investigation into the incident which occurred during City's 2-0 Premier League defeat at Stamford Bridge last Saturday.

"First of all, I want to say that I condemn any form of discrimination, of course. I think that I have to stop here," the Chelsea manager told reporters ahead of Thursday's Europa League match against Vidi in Budapest.

Sterling posted a statement on Instagram last Sunday in which he said newspapers were fuelling racism in soccer due to their negative portrayal of young black players in comparison to their white counterparts.

His comments were echoed by the Professional Footballers' Association and former players.

Sterling's England teammate Ruben Loftus-Cheek said a strong response was needed to rid the sport of the problem.

"He (Sterling) was right to say what he said. I don't think it should be in the game or anywhere. Him speaking out was the right thing. If it happened to me I would do the same."

Manchester City have agreed on a deal that will see United States international goalkeeper Zack Steffen join them from MLS side Columbus Crew next July, the Premier League champions said.

The exact financial details of the four-year contract were not revealed but Crew said the transfer fee was the largest in their history and the highest received by an MLS side for a goalkeeper in the league's 23-year history.

"Today's (Tuesday) announcement regarding next summer is a special moment... I look forward to finishing my time with this club on a strong note. I am eager to continue to put in the work to improve and be the best team mate I can," Steffen said.

"This is a historic transaction for the club and a special moment for Zack we're immensely proud of... the announcement is the culmination of 2-1/2 years of development and success for Zack," Crew interim general manager Pat Onstad said.

The 23-year-old Steffen began his career with Freiburg, playing 14 times for the German side before switching to the Ohio-based Crew in 2016. He has made 63 regular season starts since his debut in 2017.

Steffen's strong performances earned him a call up to the national side, making his debut against Bosnia in January before playing five more times for the country this year.

Be champions not 'invincible': Pep Guardiola urges City after Chelsea defeat

Chelsea and the Metropolitan Police confirmed they are investigating an incident of alleged racist abuse aimed at Manchester City's Raheem Sterling during <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/manchester-city-fall-from-top-spot-with-2-0-loss-to-chelsea-182559">Chelsea's 2-0 win</a> on Saturday.

Twitter users highlighted the first-half incident when a supporter appeared to abuse Sterling as he retrieved the ball near Chelsea supporters.

A Chelsea spokesman said: "We're aware of reports and video footage. We will investigate the matter and take the strongest possible action where necessary."

The Metropolitan Police said no arrests had been made but they were also looking at the incident.

"We are aware of a video circulating online in which it is claimed racial abuse was allegedly directed at a player at a Chelsea v Manchester City game at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, December 8," the police said in a statement.

"We will review the footage to determine whether any offences have been committed."

The latest incident comes less than a week after a Tottenham fan was arrested for throwing a banana at Arsenal's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the north London derby.

"Are we going to continue to allow this type of racist behaviour go on??? All for kicking a ball," tweeted former England and Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, who was working on the game as a pundit for BT Sport.&nbsp;

Chelsea launch investigation into racist abuse aimed at Raheem Sterling

Manchester City have fallen out of first place in the Premier League after suffering a 2-0 loss here Saturday to Chelsea in Matchday 16 action.

The Citizens controlled possession early on at Stamford Bridge and created a handful of chances, but Chelsea goalie Kepa Arrizabalaga corralled a shot by Raheem Sterling in the ninth minute and blocked an attempt by Leroy Sane shortly after the half-hour mark.

Chelsea then stunned the visitors with a goal shortly before halftime by N'Golo Kante, who fired a shot into the roof of the goal off a pass from Belgian star Eden Hazard.

City continued to control possession in the second half but could not break down Chelsea's well-organized defense, a situation that only worsened when David Silva limped off the field with an injury.

The visitors ceded the reins of the contest after the Spanish midfielder's exit and ended up allowing the second goal at the 78-minute mark on a header off a corner kick by David Luiz.

Manchester City fall from top spot with 2-0 loss to Chelsea

Chelsea bounced back from the disappointment of losing at Wolves in midweek as they <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/manchester-city-fall-from-top-spot-with-2-0-loss-to-chelsea-182559">defeated Manchester City 2-0</a> in Premier League's Matchday 16 action on Saturday.&nbsp;

City dominated the first half but failed to profit with Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane missed big chances.

Despite the victory, Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri complained about his side's level of motivation.

While interacting with media, Sarri said, "I think that we have a team with some difficulties to be motivated and in this kind of match, it is easy to have great motivation, a very good level of determination, the right level of aggressivity."

"But then during the season, you will also have to play against the small teams."

Sarri had lost all of his previous three meetings against Guardiola and was growing increasingly frustrated at his side's inability to hold possession as the visitors dominated the first half.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says he has received assurances from the club's hierarchy that they will not be banned from the Champions League over allegations of a breach of UEFA Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules.

European football's governing body are investigating allegations made in German publication Der Spiegel last month that City's Abu Dhabi owners inflated sponsorship agreements in order to comply with FFP requirements.

In response, Premier League champions City said information had been "hacked" and that they were victims of an "organised and clear" attempt to damage the club's reputation.

Punishment for clubs found guilty of breaking the rules could extend to being excluded from the Champions League.

Guardiola, appointed with the task of trying to win Europe's biggest club prize, said he was calm about the situation.

"We will not be banned, no. That's what I think because I trust in my chairman (Khaldoon al-Mubarak), with my CEO (Ferran Soriano), what they have explained to me. I trust in them," the Spaniard was quoted as saying by British media.

"If it happens, because UEFA decide that, we will accept it and move forward."

Der Spiegel's report, based on documents received by the whistle blower platform Football Leaks and reviewed by Reuters, in partnership with European Investigative Collaborations, a network of international media, alleged that some of City's Abu Dhabi sponsorships were three times more lucrative than independent experts deemed they were worth.

City said the claims were "erroneous conclusions and assertions."

Pep Guardiola confident Manchester City will not face Champions League ban

Manchester United remain distant spectators in a Premier League title race in which Liverpool continue to chase Manchester City but showed plenty of spirit as they twice equalised in a 2-2 draw with in-form Arsenal at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

Liverpool also fell behind but stormed back to beat Burnley 3-1 and cut the gap on leaders Manchester City to two points.

Tottenham Hotspur climbed to third with a 3-1 win over Southampton while Chelsea hung on to fourth spot, above Arsenal on goal difference, despite a 2-1 defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers who ended a run of six games without a win.

Storm clouds have been gathering over Jose Mourinho's misfiring United side and on a wet night in the north west they again looked well short of being contenders for the top four.

It was the first United v Arsenal clash since 1986 not featuring either Alex Ferguson or Arsene Wenger in the dugout.

On this occasion it was Wenger's successor Unai Emery who would had more to be satisfied as his Arsenal side stretched their unbeaten run to 20 matches -- although United boss Jose Mourinho also took comfort from a result that left his side 18 points behind leaders Manchester City.

"This is a performance of big soul and heart," Mourinho said. "But even from our bench you could feel the little panic when the ball comes to our defensive third."

Mourinho, who left Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku out of his starting lineup, said his side "scored all four goals".

He could not have expected keeper David de Gea to suffer the sort of panic that keeps undermining his side.

De Gea should have comfortably held Shkodran Mustafi's 26th-minute downward header but merely juggled it over his head and over the line.

Anthony Martial levelled six minutes later from close range, Ander Herrera pulling the ball back after Marcos Rojo's free kick was well-saved by Bernd Leno.

Rojo forced Leno into a fine save but it was Arsenal who led again in the 68th minute when Alexandre Lacazette got the final touch but the advantage lasted less than a minute as Arsenal's defence allowed Jesse Lingard to steal in and slide a shot under Leno.

De Gea made crucial late saves to deny Arsenal a first league win at Old Trafford since 2006.

"I think we controlled the game, the second half better than the first," Emery said. "We could have won this match in certain moments, but they equalised very quickly after both our goals."

Best Start

After Manchester City beat Watford on Tuesday to go five points clear, Liverpool responded well as their best start to a top-flight season continued after falling behind at Turf Moor.

James Milner levelled for the Reds after Jack Cork's surprise opener and substitute Roberto Firmino set Liverpool on course for a 12th win in 15 league games with his first touch before Xherdan Shaqiri rounded things off.

"I was really happy we could just adjust a few tactical things (at halftime)," Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp said after his side's 12th in 15 games.

"I shouted a lot in the first half but I wasn't angry."

His only concern was a nasty-looking ankle injury sustained by Joe Gomez in the first half.

Tottenham Hotspur shook off their north London derby defeat by Arsenal with Harry Kane, Lucas Moura and Son Heung-min all on target for Mauricio Pochettino's side at Wembley where new Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl watched from the stands.

Tottenham have 33 points, six behind Liverpool, and two more than Chelsea and Arsenal.

Chelsea took the lead early through Ruben Loftus-Cheek but Wolves replied with quickfire goals by Raul Jimenez and Diogo Jota as Chelsea lost for the second time in three games.

"We played very well for 55 minutes and then suddenly we were another team," Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri said.

Fulham manager Claudio Ranieri welcomed his old club Leicester City to Craven Cottage and shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw while Everton were held 1-1 at home by Newcastle United.

Southampton, Burnley and Fulham occupy the three relegation spots with nine points each.

Manchester United battle to draw with Arsenal, Liverpool march on

Manchester City were forced to defend deep in the final stages at Watford on Tuesday but ensured their title-chasing juggernaut kept rolling on with a 2-1 victory that extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to five points.

The defending champions, who are unbeaten in the league, were again without Argentine striker Sergio Aguero but close-season signing Riyad Mahrez showed his worth by setting up Leroy Sane for the first goal before scoring himself.

Bournemouth moved up to sixth with a 2-1 home win over lowly Huddersfield Town, while there were comfortable wins for West Ham United and 10-man Brighton &amp; Hove Albion.

City were having trouble finding a way past Watford keeper Ben Foster at Vicarage Road but the Englishman will not want to see the replay of him being beaten by the chest of Sane five minutes before the break after a Mahrez cross.

Algerian Mahrez then fired home himself shortly after halftime to set Pep Guardiola's marauding side on the way to what looked like an easy victory.

Watford did not give up though and Abdoulaye Doucoure fired in from close range five minutes from time. The hosts, without a win since October, pushed City deep into their half but could not stop them claiming a 13th win in 15 league games this term.

Spectators have been accustomed to seeing City blowing teams away, particularly last season when they won the title with a record 100 points and scored a record number of goals.

It is not often that City resort to clearing the ball high and away from their defence as they did near the end at Watford, but Guardiola said the result was the most important thing.

"For five minutes they were better than us. It is not about breaking records, it's winning games. You cannot win easily for 38 games, that is impossible," the Spanish coach said.

The focus on Wednesday switches to second-placed Liverpool who visit Burnley looking to cut the gap back to two points.

BOURNEMOUTH RESURGENT

Bournemouth's Callum Wilson and Ryan Fraser notched a goal and an assist each to snap the south-coast side's four-game losing streak with a 2-1 home win over Huddersfield Town.

Wilson gave the hosts the lead after five minutes with a superb header from a free kick that Fraser whipped in. Wilson returned the favour 17 minutes later by passing to the unmarked Fraser who slotted the ball past keeper Jonas Lossl.

Terence Kongolo pulled one back for the visitors seven minutes before halftime with a header butut it was not enough to stop Eddie Howe's side moving up to sixth spot.

Brighton were reduced to 10 men in the 'M23 derby' against Crystal Palace but still ran out comfortable 3-1 winners thanks to goals from Glenn Murray, Leon Balogun and Florin Andone.

Murray converted a 24th minute spot kick for his ninth goal of the season before Shane Duffy was sent off for a clash with Patrick van Aanholt after a penalty appeal was turned down.

The hosts doubled their lead just after the half-hour mark through substitute Balogun before Andone scored the third in first-half stoppage time.

Luka Milivojevic converted a late penalty for Palace after a foul on Wilfried Zaha but it was too late for Roy Hodgson's side who slipped to 15th, three points above the relegation zone.

Three is the magic number for West Ham with the 3-1 victory over Cardiff City at the London Stadium being their second successive win and they have scored three goals in each.

Lucas Perez came off the bench to score twice shortly after halftime before Michail Antonio headed home a third.

Cardiff's Josh Murphy bundled in a consolation but, with the bottom three playing on Wednesday, Neil Warnock's side could be in the drop zone by the time they host Southampton on Saturday.

Manchester City were forced to defend deep in the final stages at Watford on Tuesday but ensured their title-chasing juggernaut kept rolling on with a 2-1 victory that extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to five points.

Bournemouth moved up to sixth with a 2-1 home win over lowly Huddersfield Town, while there were comfortable wins for West Ham United and 10-man Brighton & Hove Albion. Man City edge Watford to extend lead, Bournemouth up to sixth

Manchester City maintained their unbeaten run with a 3-1 win over Bournemouth to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table as Manchester United fought back to salvage a 2-2 draw at Southampton on Saturday.

City top the standings by five points from Liverpool who face Everton in the Merseyside derby on Sunday after Tottenham Hotspur, who are third, face north London rivals Arsenal.

Crystal Palace beat Burnley 2-0 to end a run of eight matches without a win and there were victories for Leicester City, West Ham United and Brighton &amp; Hove Albion.

City were without Sergio Aguero, Kevin de Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez at the Etihad but normal service resumed as they took the lead against Bournemouth after 16 minutes through Bernardo Silva.

The visitors went into halftime level, however, thanks to a header from in-form England striker Callum Wilson.

Bournemouth's hopes of a stunning upset were dashed as the champions struck again with goals by Raheem Sterling and Ilkay Guendogan.

"Bournemouth are a good side, so strong up front, so we could not press," City manager Pep Guardiola said. "They played long balls, attacked the channels. They were taller than us and stronger than us.

"In the last 20 minutes we were flat and that is why I am delighted to win in that way."

Guardiola's side are 16 points ahead of neighbours United whose poor season continued with a draw against struggling Southampton at St Mary's Stadium.

Southampton's Stuart Armstrong fired an unstoppable shot past David de Gea after 13 minutes and the Spanish goalkeeper was beaten again by a curling Cedric Soares free kick into the top corner.

Southampton let a two-goal lead slip against Fulham last week and United quickly hit back through Romelu Lukaku who was set up by Marcus Rashford.

The goal was the Belgian striker's first for his club since the middle of September, a drought lasting 981 minutes.

Ander Herrera equalised before halftime to bring United fully back into the contest but the match petered out into a draw, a result that will not please either manager much.

"We did so well in the last 10, 15 minutes of the first half... good spirit, good fight, good comeback from 0-2 to 2-2 and great examples of players fighting to the limits," Mourinho told BT Sport.

"Positive examples include Marcus Rashford, Phil Jones and many others showing that respect for the shirt and showing respect for the club. Not the result we wanted but a performance that had positive things."

Huddersfield Town looked set to continue their recent upturn in form by scoring after 58 seconds at home to Brighton, Mathias Jorgensen heading in the fastest goal of the Premier League season.

However, the hosts were reduced to 10 men after half an hour when Steve Mounie was sent off for a high challenge and Brighton took full advantage with goals by Shane Duffy and Florin Andone.

PALACE JOY

Palace leapt above Huddersfield in the standings by beating Burnley at Selhurst Park to lift the pressure on manager Roy Hodgson.

Strikes in each half from James McArthur and Andros Townsend were Palace's first goals from open play at home all season. Burnley remained in the relegation zone having slipped down to 18th after Cardiff City's 2-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday.

Leicester recorded their first home win in the league since September with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Watford.

Jamie Vardy opened the scoring with a penalty after 12 minutes before James Maddison netted a brilliant volley to move Leicester up to eighth.

West Ham striker Javier Hernandez scored twice and Felipe Anderson grabbed another as the London side won 3-0 win at Newcastle United, halting the recent momentum of Rafa Benitez's side.

Man City extend lead at top, Man United salvage draw

Tottenham Hotspur ended Chelsea's unbeaten start to the Premier League season with a breathtaking display of attacking football at Wembley that saw them seal an emphatic 3-1 win and refresh their title challenge on Saturday.

The win moved Spurs up to third but unbeaten Manchester City still looked in a class of their own at the top as Leroy Sane scored twice in a 4-0 stroll over West Ham United at the London Stadium.

It put City onto 35 points from 13 matches but nearest pursuers Liverpool, also still unbeaten, remained just two points behind the champions, keeping up the pressure with a 3-0 win at Watford.

Much had been made of the unbeaten runs of City, Liverpool and Chelsea but Spurs had, quietly, made an impressive start to their own campaign and were at their brilliant best at a raucous Wembley.

After City and Liverpool had won, the writing was quickly on the wall for Maurizio Sarri's men in the day's late fixture as Chelsea went 2-0 down inside 16 minutes to goals from Dele Alli and Harry Kane.

Spurs added a sensational third when Son Heung-min carried the ball from inside his own half, beat two men with ease before finishing neatly.

Substitute Olivier Giroud added a late consolation for Chelsea but Spurs' win moved them on to 30 points, now two points clear of their London rivals.

"We created a lot of chances. If we had been more clinical we could have scored more, it was a great performance by everyone," Alli told BT Sport.

Sane's double along with goals from David Silva and Raheem Sterling helped Man City record their eighth consecutive victory.

Worryingly for the rest of the league, City manager Pep Guardiola felt his side could have played much better.

"We are a humble team and today we weren't at our best, too many touches, our passing was not good enough but our running was fantastic," he said.

Juergen Klopp's Liverpool had to be patient at Vicarage Road but were rewarded when Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Roberto Firmino netted late goals that subdued Watford. The only downside was captain Jordan Henderson being shown a red card for two bookable offences but Klopp was more focused on his side's spirit.

Spurs end Chelsea run as Man City, Liverpool forge on

Premier League leaders Manchester City turned on the style with a 3-1 win over Manchester United in their derby clash on Sunday, leaving Pep Guardiola's unbeaten side two points clear of Liverpool.

David Silva fired City ahead in the 12th minute after a Raheem Sterling cross from the left was turned back across the goal by Bernardo Silva and the Spaniard took his time before blasting home.

City doubled their lead in the third minute after the interval - Aguero bursting goalwards and playing a clever exchange with Riyad Mahrez, before thumping the ball, from a tight angle, past David de Gea.

United manager Jose Mourinho brought on Romelu Lukaku for Jesse Lingard in the 57th minute and within seconds the Belgian forward helped get his team back in the game.

Lukaku was brought down inside the area by City keeper Ederson and French forward Anthony Martial confidently converted the spot kick.

But four minutes from the end City secured the victory, their 10th in 12 games this season, when the influential Bernardo Silva picked out substitute Ilkay Gundogan in the area and the German made no mistake as he made it 3-1.

Eighth-placed United are now 12 points behind City.

Manchester City beat Manchester United to go top of Premier League

Manchester City's Bernardo Silva reckons a <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/manchester-city-beat-manchester-united-to-go-top-of-premier-league-176716">derby win over Manchester United</a> has dealt a huge blow to their local rivals' title hopes, saying Jose Mourinho's men would need to be "almost perfect" between now and the end of the season if they were to win the Premier League.

City, the reigning English champions and Premier League leaders, opened up a 12-point lead over United with a 3-1 victory at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Goals early in each half from David Silva and Sergio Aguero put City in command at 2-0 up before United pulled one back through an Anthony Martial penalty just before the hour mark.

City, however, sealed victory four minutes from time when Ilkay Gundogan crowned a 44-pass move to slot home from close range.

This was United's fourth defeat in 12 games and left them eighth in the table.&nbsp;

Before kick-off City manager Pep Guardiola had insisted United would remain title contenders even if they lost, but Silva was not so sure.&nbsp;

"It won't be easy. Not only Man City -- (they are) 10 points from Liverpool, a lot of points from the other ones as well," Silva said.

"They need to be almost perfect and wait for the other ones to lose a lot of points. I think it won't be easy," the Portugal international added.

'Amazing'

Silva, who provided the final cross from which Gundogan scored, was proud of the way City responded after Martial gave United hope of a comeback.

"After their goal we knew they would have confidence to try to come for a second but I think our performance was amazing. We didn't concede one chance -- only the penalty.

"I think the team was very concentrated, very focused on what we had to do," Silva added.

City have dropped just four points so far this season, scoring 36 goals in 12 Premier League games and conceding a mere five.

But at the same stage last term they led the table by eight points and yet they are now just two clear of second-placed Liverpool.

"We know it won't be easy this season," Silva said. "Liverpool are doing a fantastic Premier League as well.

"We want to try to and have a bigger gap during the months of December and January, where you have a lot of games. We will work very hard for that and try to improve on this."

Meanwhile, United defender Victor Lindelof believes his side should have been more aggressive following Martial's goal.

"After we scored after our first goal we could have been a bit more aggressive and tried a little bit more," he told MUTV, United's own television station.

"After that goal they were quite nervous and it felt like we could have scored another, but they scored a third goal instead.

"We had quite a lot of possession, but we didn't really come in behind their defensive line into their last third of the pitch. We tried and it felt like we could've hurt them more."

Defeat let United as close to a Cardiff side in the relegation zone as they are to City.

But when this point was put to United manager Mourinho, he replied by saying: "I think we are not going to be relegated."

This was United's fourth defeat in 12 games and left them eighth in the table. Before kick-off City manager Pep Guardiola had insisted United would remain title contenders even if they lost, but Silva was not so sure. "It won't be easy. Not only Man City -- (they are) 10 points from Liverpool, a lot of points from the other ones as well," Silva said. "They need to be almost perfect and wait for the other ones to lose a lot of points. I think it won't be easy," the Portugal international added. 'Amazing' Silva, who provided the final cross from which Gundogan scored, was proud of the way City responded after Martial gave United hope of a comeback. We will work very hard for that and try to improve on this." Meanwhile, United defender Victor Lindelof believes his side should have been more aggressive following Martial's goal. We tried and it felt like we could've hurt them more." Defeat let United as close to a Cardiff side in the relegation zone as they are to City. But when this point was put to United manager Mourinho, he replied by saying: "I think we are not going to be relegated."

Bernardo Silva believes City's derby win may have ended United's title bid

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho responded to his side's 3-1 derby <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/manchester-city-beat-manchester-united-to-go-top-of-premier-league-176716">defeat to Premier League leaders Manchester City </a>on Sunday by saying his team had paid the price for their midweek Champions League exertions in beating Juventus.

United fought back for a 2-1 victory against the Italian champions in Turin on Wednesday while City cruised through a home game against Ukrainians Shakhtar Donetsk 6-0 and the Portuguese manager was quick to point out that context.

He said the players were feeling it physically and mentally.

Mourinho was without French midfielder Paul Pogba, sidelined with injury, and while the United boss did not want to use that absence as an excuse, he said the need to play Marouane Fellaini had limited his later options.

Despite City largely controlling the game, it took a late third goal by their substitute Ilkay Gundogan to ensure there could be no repeat of United's dramatic comeback to win 3-2 in the same fixture last season.

United remain eighth, 12 points behind the leaders, and manager Mourinho refused to talk about his team still having any sort of title chances.

Pep Guardiola, City's manager, was quick to point out that Liverpool and Chelsea had also made strong starts to the campaign and said it was too early to be discussing where the title may be heading.

Mourinho blames Man United's Juventus exertions for derby loss

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has taken a veiled swipe at Manchester City star Sergio Aguero before Sunday's derby showdown at the Etihad Stadium.

Mourinho said of Aguero that "there are little things in his game I am not a fan of", although he declined to elaborate further when asked.

Aguero, City's all-time leading scorer, was criticised heavily by Mourinho after a 0-0 draw with United at the Etihad in April 2017.

United midfielder Marouane Fellaini was sent off for a headbutt on the Argentina international, with Mourinho suggesting the striker's reaction had been over-dramatic.

"I saw Aguero in the tunnel but (there was) no broken nose, no broken head, (and) his face is nice as always," Mourinho said at the time.

Mourinho was quick to pay tribute to Aguero's qualities as a goalscorer before United's latest clash with arch rivals City, but he dropped a strong hint that he believes there is a dark side to his game.

"I only fear when I play against him. I admire him because of his fantastic qualities," Mourinho said.

"There are little things in his game that I am not a big fan of, but the numbers speak by themselves. The number of goals he scores.

"It is not about scoring for one season, it is about scoring goals in your career. It is about scoring goals in a different league, like the Spanish league. Clearly, he is a goalscorer all over the world."

Asked what it was about Aguero he was not a fan of, Mourinho responded: "I keep (that) for me."

Meanwhile, the United manager made what appeared to be a reference to City's spending when discussing his own squad rebuilding job at Old Trafford.

Mourinho has spent an estimated £370 million ($480 million) on players since arriving at United in May 2016, while City manager Pep Guardiola is thought to have spent around £485 million over the same period.

- Case for the defence -

United have spent extensively in central defence, midfield and attack during Mourinho's reign, although the manager chose to focus on the full-back positions, an area in which City invested heavily in the summer of 2017, when they signed Kyle Walker, Benjamin Mendy and Danilo.

Mourinho cited the example of Luke Shaw, a player who is now a regular in the United side after a long spell struggling for form, as an example of his ability to develop players on his books rather than dip into the transfer market for a replacement.

"If I need a full-back and I buy four, it is easier," Mourinho said.&nbsp;

"If I need a full-back because I am not happy with Luke Shaw's level, the easiest thing is to buy four. Some clubs can buy four."

City have only bought three full-backs under Guardiola, but no other Premier League club has spent as much money in that position over the past three years, suggesting that they were the target of Mourinho's comments.

"We didn't buy a left-back for three years. We were wishing and working for Luke Shaw to be that left-back, but during that process we played Matteo Darmian, we played Ashley Young, we played Marcos Rojo," he said.&nbsp;

"We didn't buy four. There is a difference. To buy four you only need good scouting and money. To make players takes more time."

United go into Sunday's derby having won three games in a row, reducing talk of a crisis that, at one stage in early October, looked as if it might cost Mourinho his job.

The former Chelsea boss says fevered talk of problems at Old Trafford comes with the territory of managing such a prestigious club.

"It is Manchester United's fault. When I say fault, I mean for the right reasons," he said.&nbsp;

"It is the history of the club that makes one defeat become a crisis. It is the history, the prestige."

Mourinho takes swipe at Aguero ahead of Man City clash

Manchester City's in-form winger Raheem Sterling has signed a three-year contract extension to keep him at the club through to 2023, the English champions said on Friday.

The 23-year-old England player, who has seven goals in 14 games this season, said he was in the best place to improve, having played in several positions under Pep Guardiola.

British media said Sterling's deal was worth up to £300,000&nbsp;($389,000) a week, which would put him among the best paid players in the league.

“I’m delighted to sign," he told the City website https://www.mancity.com/news/first-team/first-team-news/2018/november/raheem-sterling-manchester-city-contract-extension-news. "My development here has been incredible.

"I felt from the minute I got here it was the right choice for me. It’s paid off and I’m really grateful.”

Sterling joined City from Liverpool for £49 million&nbsp;in 2015 and won the league title and League Cup last season.

“This is a significant moment for the Club," added City's Director of Football Txiki Begiristain.

"Raheem has improved dramatically in the past two seasons and is now one of the Premier League’s best attacking players. His statistics tell their own story.

“He’s quick, strong and excellent in front of goal – everything a modern-day forward needs to excel. We’re all delighted he has committed his future to City.”

Manchester City's Raheem Sterling signs contract extension

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola does not think Sunday's derby against Manchester United will define his team's campaign, but is still keen to avoid a repeat of last season's defeat by the same opponents.

City were in control against United in the corresponding fixture at the Etihad Stadium last term, leading by two first-half goals, only for United to stage a second-half rally and win 3-2.

"We have to play good," Guardiola told a news conference on Friday. "If we play good, we have a chance to win. You cannot imagine we are going to play amazingly for 90 minutes against top teams.

"I would like to play the same game as last season when we were on top for 75 minutes but United showed us that they just need 10 or 15 minutes to create chances.

"When they have the ball, they can create something because they have incredible talent."

Both teams are in good form, with seventh-placed United on a three-game winning streak and league leaders City having gone 11 games unbeaten in all competitions.

Guardiola is looking forward to the battle but believes the fixture has come too soon to have significant bearing on the title race.

"We are in November so maybe the game at Old Trafford (in March) will be more decisive," the Spaniard said. "Of course we are on a good run, United as well. It's a good derby. All of them are special."

The manager also reiterated his faith in the club in the wake of allegations that they had circumvented financial fair play rules.

"If people want to undermine what we have done, no problem," he said. "We live our lives. Opinions are opinions. I have said I trust the club a lot.

"If there is something wrong, we will be punished. FIFA or UEFA have to say if we were wrong. If we were wrong, we will accept it but I hear what my club said to me and I trust them."

The allegations against City stem from the release of the "Football Leaks" documents, which include emails, contracts and presentations.

The documents were obtained by German publication Der Spiegel and reviewed by Reuters in partnership with international media consortium European Investigative Collaborations.

The City manager's news conference ended in uproarious laughter after he responded to his former player, Brazilian Dani Alves's comment that being coached by Guardiola at Barcelona was "better than sex".

Alves made the comment in a documentary about Guardiola's all-conquering spell at Barcelona, where they won three La Liga titles and the Champions League twice.

"I prefer the sex," a grinning Guardiola said in response to a question on Alves's comment. "By far!"

Manchester derby will not define City's season, says Pep Guardiola

Manchester City needed no help to swat aside Shakhtar Donetsk 6-0 to move to the brink of the Champions League last 16, but got a boost with a farcical penalty award that led to even manager&nbsp;Pep&nbsp;Guardiola&nbsp;to call for the introduction of VAR.

Hungarian referee Viktor Kassai remarkably pointed to the spot when Raheem Sterling tripped himself up as he bore down on goal midway through the first half with City already leading 1-0 through David Silva's opener.

"It's not (a penalty)," said&nbsp;Guardiola. "VAR doesn't exist in UEFA so that is the problem."

Despite some controversial calls, the use of video referees was largely deemed successful at the World Cup and will be introduced in the Champions League next season.

However,&nbsp;Guardiola, who was sent to the stands for protesting a goal City had wrongly ruled out in a quarter-final elimination to Liverpool last season, called for it to be used in the competition this term.

"The referee must be helped by the technology. It's not nice to score a goal in that (way) but it happened to us last season against Liverpool so the referee must be helped."

Sterling also apologised to Kassai after kicking the ground as he attempted to chip the ball goalwards.

"I went to chip the ball and don't know what happened," said the England international. "I didn't feel contact. I scuffed the ball, apologies to the ref."

Ahead of the game City had been in the news for the wrong reasons in recent days with a series of allegations published by German magazine Der Spiegel claiming the English champions attempted to bypass UEFA's Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations.

Whatever storm clouds may be brewing in City's boardroom, it appears they can do no wrong on the field as they warmed up for the Manchester derby on Sunday by smashing six goals for the second time in four days.

Jesus punishes Shakhtar

A lack of atmosphere had been blamed for City's surprising record of three defeats in their previous three Champions League games at home.

The latest of those to Lyon in front of plenty of empty seats at the Etihad in September has now been long forgotten as back-to-back victories over Shakhtar and Hoffenheim have put City in a commanding position at the top of the group.

The fans were in better voice with fewer jeers than usual for the Champions League anthem and they soon had something to cheer when Silva tapped home Mahrez's cross.

Guardiola&nbsp;apologised to Gabriel Jesus for nominating Mahrez as the penalty taker when the Algerian missed from the spot late on in a 0-0 draw at Liverpool last month.

The Brazilian started up front ahead of Sergio Aguero with one eye on keeping the Argentine fresh for Sunday, but Jesus may now have played himself into contention by more than doubling his tally for the season.

Jesus calmly slotted home the hotly contested spot-kick before Sterling curled in his seventh of the season from the edge of the area three minutes into the second half.

Possibly embarrassed by his earlier award, Kassai resisted a few more claims for a City penalty, but did eventually point to the spot once more when Silva was tripped 18 minutes from time and Jesus fired into the roof of the net.

Mahrez made it five by sneaking a shot in at the near post on his weaker right foot before Jesus' chip rounded off the scoring in stoppage time.

Guardiola&nbsp;also had the luxury of being able to take off Kyle Walker, Fernandinho and Silva early ahead of United's visit as City look to go 12 points ahead of their local rivals after just 12 games of the Premier League season.

Champions League needs VAR, says Guardiola as City gain from comical penalty

Among a dazzling array of midfield options, it is the often unheralded Fernandinho who Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has relied on most in another stunning start to the season for the Premier League champions.

The Brazilian will face old club Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday as City seek to make amends from the only blip of their campaign so far, a shock 2-1 defeat to Lyon in their last Champions League home game.

If any reminder was needed over Guardiola's influence, he was banned from the touchline that night.

Since his return, City have won nine and drawn one, a 0-0 stalemate away to Liverpool, of their last 10 games, scoring 29 goals and conceding just two in the process.

Although fulsome in his praise of the maturing centre-back pairing Aymeric Laporte and John Stones, Guardiola's defensive philosophy is dependent on a team effort to keep the ball as far away from City's goal as possible.

"Always we try to convince our players as far away the ball is from our goal, we are safe. It's much, much better. The moment the ball is around our box, anything can happen," said Guardiola this week.

"In 10 years I was always concerned, always focused, maybe more than any other thing, in defending well.

"The only difference is we do it far away from our goal." Central to that philosophy is Fernandinho's ability to not just read the game and quickly regain possession, but also use the ball soundly as a springboard to City's attack.

"There is always a relation. When you attack good, you defend well. When you defend well and are solid, you attack better," added Guardiola.

'Luckiest manager in the world'

Despite turning 33 earlier this year, Fernandinho has started all of City's 14 Premier and Champions League matches this season, while the more creative talents of David Silva, Leroy Sane, Bernardo Silva and Raheem Sterling have had to live with Guardiola's rotation policy.

"Ferna would make any manager the happiest or luckiest in the world," said Guardiola ahead of City's 3-0 win in Ukraine against Shakhtar two weeks ago.

"He is a joy to have as a player - he is very special. He will always be a special player for me to work alongside."&nbsp;

Guardiola knows very well the dual demands of Fernandinho's role having won the European Cup in his days as a player in the same position for Barcelona.

Fernandinho received arguably the highest praise from his manager when he claimed even Guardiola the player couldn't force his way into the current City juggernaut given his form.

So far City's failure to land Jorginho, who instead choose to follow Maurizio Sarri in the move from Napoli to Chelsea in July, to share the burden as the midfield anchor hasn't proved costly.

Instead, Guardiola's men show no sign of a slip in standards from their record 100-point Premier League campaign last season, as evidenced by a 6-1 annihilation of Southampton on Sunday.

It is the Champions League that remains the holy grail for City's Abu Dhabi owners, though, and despite the Lyon stumble, another victory against Shakhtar will put the English champions well on course to make the last 16 for a sixth straight season.

Among a dazzling array of midfield options, it is the often unheralded Fernandinho who Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has relied on most in another stunning start to the season for the Premier League champions.

Central to that philosophy is Fernandinho's ability to not just read the game and quickly regain possession, but also use the ball soundly as a springboard to City's attack. "There is always a relation. When you attack good, you defend well. When you defend well and are solid, you attack better," added Guardiola. 'Luckiest manager in the world' Despite turning 33 earlier this year, Fernandinho has started all of City's 14 Premier and Champions League matches this season, while the more creative talents of David Silva, Leroy Sane, Bernardo Silva and Raheem Sterling have had to live with Guardiola's rotation policy. "Ferna would make any manager the happiest or luckiest in the world," said Guardiola ahead of City's 3-0 win in Ukraine against Shakhtar two weeks ago. "He is a joy to have as a player - he is very special. He will always be a special player for me to work alongside." Guardiola knows very well the dual demands of Fernandinho's role having won the European Cup in his days as a player in the same position for Barcelona.

Fernandinho the glue binding surging Man City together

Pep Guardiola said managing in England is a "dream come true" as he was honoured by the Football Writers' Association fresh from a 6-1 Premier League victory against Southampton.

The Manchester City manager was recognised for his side's Premier League title last season and the club are again setting the pace this season, with nine wins in 11 games.

Speaking at Sunday's ceremony in Manchester, he said: "I'm fortunate to be here in your country, in England.

"It's incredible. It was a dream from a little boy for a young manager to come here to your country and be a manager here. It's a dream come true." City won 32 of their 38 games last season, scoring a record 106 goals and amassing a record 100 points.

"I want to share, of course, this award with the whole Manchester City family because I know it's a real family," said Guardiola.

"I know people say we have a lot of money. That's true but despite that it's incredible the people I'm working with and I'm a lucky guy to be here.

"Thank you so much to make me feel at home in your country here and in Manchester."

The 47-year-old also made light of his outfit for the evening -- the event's dress code was lounge suit and Guardiola accepted the award wearing a casual top.

Pointing to his outfit, he added: "Everyone is so elegant with a suit and tie and I came here with... I am a little bit embarrassed, I'm a disaster. I didn't expect how important this event was."

Manchester City's Kevin De Bruyne ruled out for six weeks due to knee injury

Jose Mourinho believes Manchester United can still secure a top-four finish in the Premier League, saying an unkind fixture list is partly to blame for their early season struggles.

United are languishing in eighth place in the table, five points from a Champions League qualification position, as they prepare to visit Bournemouth on Saturday.

But the manager believes his team have been hindered by a series of difficult back-to-back away fixtures, citing the fact they must travel to Manchester City in the Premier League on November 11, four days after a Champions League trip to Juventus, and that they visit Liverpool in December after a European away game against Valencia.

He did not mention that United have also had back-to-back home games three times across all competitions already this season and have only played two of the current top six in their opening 10 league games.

Mourinho, in his pre-match press conference, said he believed the picture at Old Trafford would be rosier at the beginning of the New Year.

"I always say that in the end of the season you play 19 matches at home and away and it doesn't matter when but the reality is that the way the fixtures are coming, sometimes they have an influence in the moment.

"We had a double fixture away in September (at Burnley and Watford). Now we have a double away league fixture at Bournemouth and Manchester City.

"We will have Juventus away before we go to Manchester City, and we will have Valencia away before Liverpool.

"In this part of the season, we play away against possibly the three biggest candidates for the title, in Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City, so the calendar was not nice to us.

"But I think by the end of December, which is the end of the first half of the Premier League season, we are not going to be in the position we are now. We will be in a better position."

Title challenge?

Mourinho has refused to rule out a challenge for the title but says the first priority must be to climb into the top four.

"When you are outside the top four I don't think you should speak about the title," he said. "When you are in the top four, which I believe we are going to be, you can look up, see the distance, look to the fixtures, to the calendar."

He declined to reveal whether striker Romelu Lukaku would be recalled at Bournemouth, having been dropped after going eight games without scoring.

The manager also said he was "100 percent not guilty" of using foul language after being cleared by an independent panel of a Football Association charge.

Mourinho was accused of improper conduct for remarks he allegedly made in Portuguese after their 3-2 Premier League win over Newcastle on October 6.

He has avoided a touchline ban after the charge was found "not proven", although it is understood that the FA is considering an appeal.

However, Mourinho said that the reason United went to such lengths to contest the charge, putting forward detailed linguistic analysis and citing precedents of other football figures swearing during matches, was because he was convinced of his innocence.

"You know the reason why I ask the club and lawyers to appeal was because I was 100 percent sure that I was not guilty of these charges but you never know how it ends," he said.

Kevin De Bruyne suffered an injury scare as League Cup holders Manchester City moved into the quarter-finals with a 2-0 win against Fulham on Thursday.

There was concern for De Bruyne after the City midfielder limped off with what appeared to be a knee injury in the closing minutes.

De Bruyne, 27, only recently returned from another knee problem that forced him to miss two months this season, limiting him to five appearances to date.

City manager Pep Guardiola will hope his influential Belgian star is able to make a quick recovery as they head into a busy period featuring crucial Champions League fixtures and the Manchester derby.

"He's being checked by the doctor. Right now I don't know if it's nothing or something serious," Guardiola said.

Until the injury, Guardiola felt it was the most complete performance of De Bruyne's comeback, but now he must fret over his fitness again.

"I think today Kevin is back. The Kevin we know," he said. "Today he was involved in offence and defence. Hopefully what happened in the last minute is not serious."

De Bruyne's injury overshadowed a memorable evening for youngster Brahim Diaz.

Diaz was making only his third appearance of the season and the promising Spanish striker seized his chance with a brace at the Etihad Stadium.

The 19-year-old's goals ensured City advance to face Leicester or Southampton in the last eight as they bid to retain the trophy.

Diaz has been linked with a move to Real Madrid among other top European sides, but Guardiola confirmed City are keen to hold onto their hot prospect.

"He knows the desire we have and what we want for all the young players," Guardiola said.&nbsp;

"They know how we want to protect them and to try to help them understand the way we want to play.

"We want him. In the end it won't depend on us, it is them. It is the agent, him, his family, they will decide."

With the English champions having won at Tottenham in the Premier League on Monday, Guardiola rested many of his stars among 10 changes.

Diaz was one of those who came in, while De Bruyne, Phil Foden and Gabriel Jesus also featured against Premier League strugglers Fulham.

Prior to his injury, De Bruyne had been dominant and he quickly tested the Fulham defence with a run and shot.

Foden brought Fulham goalkeeper Sergio Rico into action with a powerful strike.

But it was his fellow teenager Diaz who opened the scoring with his first City goal in the 19th minute.

A short corner found its way to Vincent Kompany at the far post and Diaz ran on to his header down to hit a powerful shot which deflected past the goalkeeper off Aleksander Mitrovic.

Danilo nearly added City's second when the defender weaved into the penalty area before unleashing a searing effort which struck the outside of a post.

As half-time loomed, De Bruyne sent a wicked cross in from the right but Foden's header went just the wrong side of the far post.

City were straight back on the front foot to start the second half, with Jesus heading wide before De Bruyne's curling shot went just the wrong side of the post.

They had to wait until the 65th minute for the second goal to come as Diaz netted again.

Leroy Sane slipped the ball through to Jesus, but when his shot across goal was touched on to the woodwork by Rico, it fell for Diaz, who took a touch before lashing home.

Fulham never threatened to stop City keeping a fifth successive clean-sheet in all competitions.

A comfortable evening for the Premier League leaders finished on a low note five minutes from full-time when De Bruyne went down in pain after falling awkwardly in a clash with Timothy Fosu-Mensah.
