A magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck Japan's Bonin Islands, as reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) on Saturday (April 27). The quake occurred at a depth of 503.2 km (312.7 miles). The US National Tsunami Warning Center confirmed that no tsunami warning was issued based on the available data.

Japan, a country familiar with seismic activity, faced the aftermath of a strong 7.6 magnitude earthquake on New Year's Day, 2024.

Taking a global perspective, recent seismic events serve as a stark reminder of the destructive potential of earthquakes. The 7.8 magnitude earthquake in southeast Turkey last year claimed over 50,000 lives, while the 2015 Nepal earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.8, resulted in approximately 9,000 casualties. In October of the same year, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan, claiming the lives of more than 2,000 people.

Japan's geographical location places it squarely within the seismic 'Pacific Ring of Fire', subjecting the country to approximately 20 per cent of the world's earthquakes of magnitude six or greater every year.

A staggering 2,000 quakes, perceptible to its population, remind Japan of its seismic vulnerability annually, though not all result in casualties.

Japan's Bonin Islands hit by magnitude 6.5 earthquake

A powerful earthquake of 7.5 magnitude hit Taiwan around 9:00 am Japanese local time (0000 GMT) on Wednesday (April 3) which led to tsunami warnings for southern Japanese islands, said Japan Meteorological Agency. Seven people were killed and more than 700 others were reported injured in the massive earthquake.

According to the agency, tsunami waves as high as three metres (10 feet) were expected in remote Japanese islands close to Taiwan, which includes Miyakojima Island. However, tsunami warnings have now been lifted.

The earthquake reportedly knocked out power in different parts of the city. The footage of some collapsed buildings near the quake's epicentre was telecast on Taiwan television stations. As per media reports, some people are also trapped in the debris. The quake was felt as far as Shanghai.

An evacuation advisory was issued by the Japanese authorities for the coastal areas of the southern prefecture of Okinawa, in the wake of the tsunami alert.

Japan’s national broadcaster broadcasted warnings like “Tsunami is coming. Please evacuate immediately,” said an anchor on NHK. “Do not stop. Do not go back," they said.

“Evacuate!” read a banner on the broadcast channel.

Another warning was issued by the Philippines Seismology Agency for residents in coastal areas of different provinces, appealing to them to evacuate to higher ground.

The earthquake tremors were also felt in Fuzhou, Xiamen, Quanzhou and Ningde in China's Fujian province, as per the Chinese state media.

A tsunami advisory was issued by Japan for the Izu Islands after it was struck by a magnitude 6.6 earthquake in the Pacific Ocean.

The meteorological agency of Japan said that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres at around 11:00 a.m. on Thursday (Oct 5) near Torishima Island in the Izu chain.

The epicentre of the earthquake was in the Pacific Ocean, around 550 km (340 miles) south of Tokyo.

Two hours after being issued, the advisory was lifted. The advisory, which was the second-lowest of a four-stage warning system, had advised people to maintain distance from the seashore and river mouths.

The experts also expect some changes in tide levels along the Pacific coast of the main islands in Japan.

Tsunami waves reach one of the islands

After the advisory was issued, tsunami waves, which measured up to 30 cm in height, were seen on at least one of the Izu islands. Originally, the weather forecasters had estimated waves of around one metre for the remote chain of islands located south of Tokyo.

People living in the coastal areas and close to the river mouths were advised to retreat to higher ground. “A 1-meter wave may not seem significant. ... But encountering such a wave can be extremely dangerous and it can sweep you off your feet,” said a Meteorological Agency representative, while speaking at a press conference.

The US Geological Survey stated that the area was hit by a series of offshore earthquakes on Thursday morning. The agency stated that the quake was not felt in Tokyo or on the islands.

Earlier, it was predicted that the tsunami would reach the Izu islands at various times including at Hachijo-jima at 11:50 am and Izu Oshima at noon. The meteorological agency further warned of potential aftershocks, adding that there is a 10 per cent to 20 per cent chance that an earthquake of similar magnitude will occur. The residents were told to stay on alert for the next week.

Japan issues tsunami warning for Izu Islands after 6.6 magnitude quake

Indonesia's eastern province of Maluku was struck by an earthquake on Sunday morning, measuring a magnitude of 6.0. Media reports citing country's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency said that the epicentre of the quake was situated 154 kilometres northwest of the Kepulauan Tanimbar district, with a depth of 153 kilometres.

Indonesia, located in the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire where tectonic plates converge, frequently witnesses earthquakes. However, no reports of material damages have been received thus far, according to reports.

Earthquake of magnitude 6 jolts Indonesia’s eastern province Maluku

Russia’s east coast of Kamchatka was struck by a powerful 6.6 magnitude earthquake on Monday, according to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).

The tremors were recorded around 3 pm (local time) and struck at a depth of 100km (62.13 miles), EMSC said. No casualties or destruction of property has been reported so far. Also, no tsunami warning has been issued by the US Tsunami Warning System.

"Operational groups of rescuers and firefighters are inspecting buildings," the emergency ministry said, according to Reuters news agency.

"According to preliminary information, there are no casualties and destruction."

The Russian Academy of Sciences geophysical service said the earthquake hit near Avacha Bay in the southeastern coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula, reported Sputnik News.

Initially, the officials estimated the earthquake’s magnitude to be 5.7, however, it was later revised to 6.9.

Several videos shared on social media purportedly showed fans and window panes even as people run for cover.

Notably, this was the second earthquake in the Kamchatka region within a month.

On March 8, a 6.1 magnitude of seismic activity was reported from Kamchatka Peninsula’s southern coast, which caused two subsequent aftershocks within three hours.

The Kamchatka Peninsula, about 6,800 kilometres east of Moscow, sits on the Ring of Fire zone on the Pacific Ocean— known to be seismically active zone, and hence earthquakes are prone in the region.

The peninsula is located in the Russian Far East and is 1,250-kilometre-long. The region is known to have the highest density of active volcanoes, with 19 active volcanoes in the region included in UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
