Tuesday morning at the presidential palace, Macron is scheduled to meet with his 89-year-old counterpart Paul Biya, who has controlled Cameroon with an iron fist for almost 40 years. They are anticipated to talk about security in Cameroon, which has been torn apart by ethnic conflict and a 2017 insurrection by anglophone separatists seeking the independence of two English-speaking districts. Jihadists from Boko Haram have also carried out attacks in northern Cameroon.

In 2020, Macron angered Biya by threatening to exert "maximum pressure" on the president in response to the "intolerable" violence in the West African nation. His visit comes at a time when China, India, and Germany are gaining ground on France, a former colonial power, particularly in the economic and commercial spheres. Macron will meet with representatives of youth and civil society after having lunch with Biya and his wife Chantal. He will finish the day at "Noah Village," which is being hosted by former tennis champion Yannick Noah, who is building a recreation and educational facility in a well-liked Yaounde neighbourhood where he spends several months of the year.

On Wednesday, Macron will travel to Benin, which has experienced devastating attacks by jihadists who have expanded from the Sahel to the countries of the Gulf of Guinea.

France's National Assembly has rejected a proposal that would have given government powers to demand proof of vaccination or negative COVID test from travellers when they enter France.&nbsp;

French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne condemned the obstruction. Allies stressed how the so-called "extremes", far left and far right, teamed together.

Macron made the statement in a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid. Israel is fiercely against any nuclear deal with Iran.

Nuclear deal with Iran was struck by the USA under former president Barack Obama and other world powers including Russia in 2015. But Obama's successor Donald Trump took USA out of the deal and re-imposed crippling sanctions on the Islamic republic. After current President Joe Biden took office, the discussions to revive the nuclear deal have been going on but without result so far.

"We have to defend this (nuclear) deal (with Iran). And take in account the interests of our friends in the area, primarily Israel," Macron told reporters in the joit press conference.

Israel is opposed to any deal with Iran. The Islamic republic has over years, carved its own sphere of influence in West Asia. Saudi Arabia is also opposed to growing Iranian influence.

Before his arrival in Paris, Lapid reiterated his country's stance in presence of reporters travelling with him.&nbsp;

Acknowledging that France disagrees with that view, he said what was beyond dispute was that "Iran is violating the agreement and continues to develop its nuclear programme."

Israeli officials fear that giving Iran sanctions relief in exchange for curbs on its nuclear programme could allow Tehran to boost funding to Hezbollah, as well as the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

Macron, meanwhile, deplored that Iran "refuses to seize the opportunity offered to it to conclude a good agreement", but said he would "make every effort" to make Tehran "see reason".

French Red Cross director Jean-Christophe Combe was named the new solidarity and social cohesion minister after the accusations against Damien Abad, who has denied any wrongdoing, in a scandal that has embarrassed the government.

A move made by Macron has surprised everyone. He has named the chief economist of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Laurence Boone as new Europe minister in place of Clement Beaune, who had played a key role in negotiations with the UK over Brexit.

In another key change, Christophe Bechu, mayor of the Loire city of Angers and a key ally of former prime minister Edouard Philippe, was named environment minister.

He replaces Macron loyalist Amelie de Montchalin who lost the battle for her seat in the parliamentary elections and has stepped aside.&nbsp;

Macron ruling alliance won most seats in parliamentary polls that took place on June 19. But it lost the majority. It will now would need to build coalitions to push legislation through parliament.

The outcome was seen as a major setback for the president, who won a second presidential term in May after defeating far-right leader Marine Le Pen.&nbsp;
