McLaren's Lando Norris said on Wednesday he has acquired the experience to challenge for a Formula One world championship but it is "probably too late" to stop Max Verstappen taking a fourth consecutive title this weekend. The British driver requires a minimum of three more points than Red Bull's three-time champion at this weekend's Las Vegas Grand Prix to keep his title hopes alive.

Las Vegas is the first of a triple-header finale to the season which ends in Qatar and Abu Dhabi. "It's been the first time that we've had a chance to fight at the front," said Norris. "We've not been able to do that for the past six years and this has been our and my first opportunity. "I was definitely not at the level I needed to be at the beginning of the year, but since the summer break I feel I've done a very good job and performed very well, by far some of my best. "I'm not completely happy with what I've done, but for the first time I feel I have got what it takes. I wasn't outright ready to go up against Red Bull and Max. I think I am now, but it is probably too late," the 25-year-old added.

After a salutary experience at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, where Verstappen ended a 10-race winless run, Norris conceded the "door is almost shut" on his title bid. He goes into this weekend's race 62 points adrift of Dutch driver Verstappen.

"Max is one of the best drivers ever in F1 and to go up against that person who is so good takes a bit more than I have done this season," he said "I am not completely happy with what I've done, but for the first time I feel I have got what it takes to fight for the championship. "It doesn't mean I'm complete and when you are competing against drivers like Max you have to be close to perfect. The main thing I can take away is I have faith I have what it takes to fight for a championship."

Norris admitted he had experienced a "tough time" after finishing in sixth place in Brazil in early November. "It was a defining moment for the championship. The doors are almost shut," he said. "For a week, I was pretty down because I had that realisation that things are pretty much out of my control and not within reach and that's a tough thing. "When your hopes are so high, to get it knocked down, that was pretty demoralising and not the best feeling."

New evidence has come to light that has led to the reopening of the Menendez brothers’ case. Family and friends of Lyle and Erik Menendez pleaded for the brothers to be released after spending over three decades in prison for murdering their parents, Kitty and Jose Menendez, in 1989.

Los Angeles district attorney is analysing the new evidence, a letter from Erik Menendez to his cousin eight months prior to the day the brothers fatally shot their parents.

Their family, friends, and attorney asked for their release in the Los Angeles courthouse on Wednesday, October 16. They argued that the boys were subjected to horrific sexual abuse by their father and are no longer a danger to society. Anna Maria Baralt, Jose Menendez’s niece talked about how the society and justice system treats male victims of sexual abuse.

“If they were the Menendez sisters, they would not be in custody,” Baralt said at a news conference. “We have evolved.”

However, some other relatives and prosecutors have claimed that the murder was planned by the brothers to inherit their wealthy parents’ multimillion-dollar estate.

“The Menendez brothers’ cold-blooded actions shattered their family and left a trail of grief that has persisted for decades. Jose was shot six times, and Kitty was shot ten times, including a shot to her face after Erik reloaded," said Kathy Cady, a lawyer for Kitty Menendez’s brother, Milton Andersen. She added that Andersen believes the brothers should stay behind bars for the "heinous act" they committed.

What is the Menendez brothers’ case?

The Menendez brothers went to trial in 1993 for shooting their parents with a pair of shotguns. They admitted that they shot them in self-defence after suffering emotional, physical, and sexual abuse by their father for years.

The case went to retrial after the jury could not come to a judgment. In the second trial that happened in 1995, the evidence about alleged sexual abuse was not permitted to be presented in court. The brothers were found guilty of first-degree murder and were sentenced to life in prison without parole.

The case has gained more popularity after a Netflix series was released in September. The new evidence has also come to light, a letter by Erik that describes the sexual abuse they endured by their father.

“They were just children” who were “brutalised in the most horrific ways," said Joan Anderson VanderMolen, Kitty Menendez's sister. “The whole world wasn’t ready to believe that the boys could be raped, or that young men could be victims of sexual violence".

Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón recently announced in a press conference that the case is being re-examined. Two scenarios are possible: the brothers could be resentenced or given a retrial. The hearing where the decision will be announced will be held at the end of November.

"Please know that our office is dedicated to a thorough and fair process and is exploring every avenue available to our office to ensure justice is served," Gascón's office said in a statement on Wednesday.

The family is recommending the brothers be resentenced, which may set them free from prison.

A family in Los Angeles has an unwanted visitor who comes to their home every morning to sleep after a tiring night. Bob and Susan Nesler have a black bear living in the crawlspace of their home for two weeks now. They live in the San Gabriel Valley foothills and have even named the bear.

NBC, ABC and Northern News reported that the bear has been living in a hole he dug in the house's porch. The bear, named "Junior" by Bob and Susa, leaves every night to look for food and then returns in the morning. It goes into the space he has created for himself and naps away.

"Apparently he leaves to go out on the town in the evening, and then he comes back about 5:30 in the morning," Bob told ABC 7.

The couple says that he hasn't harmed them but they are looking at ways to get rid of him since he might prove to be a danger to someone else.

"That's his den right now. We gotta get him out of there because, you know, I think we'd be held responsible if anybody got hurt, but he hasn't bothered us in any way," he said.

They even have some pictures of him who has been snapped by a motion-activated camera installed by California Fish and Wildlife agents.

Bob further said that they are not scared of "Junior" since bears are not dangerous unless you are a "trash can".

However, one thing that does bother them is the "piles of scat", or poop in common language, he leaves around the house.

The couple say they are used to wildlife roaming in their area and have seen all sorts of animals. “We get bears, coyotes. I had a rabbit shoot through the yard, followed by a bobcat,” Susan told Northern News.

Bob understands that the bear just needed "a place to make into a den". “He’s just an old bear," he told Northern News.

The couple is in no hurry to get him removed from their premises and doesn't want him to be harmed in any way while doing so.

Despite the name of the species, black bears can have brown and even blonde coats. Junior has a brown coat.

Novak Djokovic's triumphant Olympic campaign in Paris could motivate the 37-year-old to keep going for four more years and compete in the Los Angeles Games, his former coach Goran Ivanisevic said. Djokovic beat Carlos Alcaraz 7-6(3) 7-6(2) on Sunday to claim the gold medal and became only the fifth player to achieve a career Golden Slam - winning all four Grand Slam trophies and the Olympic title.

Victory at Roland Garros ended Djokovic's title drought in an otherwise lacklustre season and came just weeks after he was thrashed by Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final and two months after he had knee surgery following the French Open. "Novak didn't show up in the Wimbledon final, but here you could tell ... If they stayed for five more hours on that court, the outcome would have been the same," Ivanisevic told the Tennis Majors website.

"Novak was flying, he was dancing. People forgot this was his first Olympics final, he felt this is it, he has to seize this opportunity. "Considering how crazy he is, it wouldn't surprise me to see him in Los Angeles as well."

Croatian Ivanisevic, who helped Djokovic claim nine of his 24 Grand Slam titles before leaving his team in March, said the Serb was now the firm favourite for the U.S. Open, which begins on Aug. 26.

Djokovic will bid to win a fifth Flushing Meadows title that would see surpass Margaret Court in the all-time list with a 25th major. "I'm so glad that he finally won this gold. I wish him a 25th Slam, to break the absolute record, and then he can retire, although he'll never retire, this guy," Ivanisevic said. "I think he can find the motivation, the gold will lift him. If he plays like this, he's the man to beat at the U.S. Open."

In a bizarre incident, a TikTok creator revealed how the American Airlines flight was diverted due to a medical emergency, which was later found to be a lice infestation.

The flight, which took off from Los Angeles and was bound to land in New York, was rerouted to Phoenix. Among the passengers was Ethan Judelson, who posted a video on TikTok detailing how American Airlines did not inform the travellers of what actually happened.

In the video that reached over 1.2 million views, Judelson describes how he saw a woman causing a commotion as she rushed through the aisle towards the front as soon as the plane landed. While he was confused, no other passenger paid attention to it.

"It just seemed like one of those people who, as soon as the seatbelt sign goes off, gets up and tries to be the first to their bag," he told People, recalling the incident. "So the girl next to me ... we were both like, 'Why is she so rushed to get off? We're all getting off together, calm down."

The airlines told them that they would learn more about the situation once the plane was deboarded. However, the only thing they learned was that the flight to New York would take off in 12 hours.

After they landed in Phoenix, they got a voucher for a stay at a hotel via email from the airlines. On TikTok, Judelson mentioned two women gave him "cryptic" answers when asked about what happened.

"So the girl next to me ... we were both like, 'Why is she so rushed to get off? We're all getting off together, calm down." The airlines told them that they would learn more about the situation once the plane was deboarded. However, the only thing they learned was that the flight to New York would take off in 12 hours. After they landed in Phoenix, they got a voucher for a stay at a hotel via email from the airlines. On TikTok, Judelson mentioned two women gave him "cryptic" answers when asked about what happened. The possibility of boxing being excluded from the programme at the Los Angeles Olympics and beyond is "terrifying" and would hit athletes in the developing world the hardest, Australian boxer Harry Garside said. The boxing tournament at the Paris Games is being organised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which stripped the International Boxing Association of recognition last June, saying it had failed to complete reforms on governance, finance and ethical issues.

The IOC said it would not organise the tournament in 2028, leading to fears the sport might be excluded from future Games. Boxing is not on the initial programme for Los Angeles.

Garside, who won a bronze medal in Tokyo three years ago, told reporters boxers loved fighting for their country. "To take that away from some young people around the world, it would be a crime, truly," he added. "Boxing is one of the oldest sports. To see it maybe not be in the Olympic Games, it is honestly terrifying.

"Boxing is also historically a poor man's sport. If you look around the world, it's the third world countries that are the best. It's the athletes that come from these really rough areas, they're the ones that come and win gold medals."

Australia's Caitlin Parker, a two-time Commonwealth Games medallist, said taking boxing out of the Games would be unfair on women, who have only been permitted to box at the Olympics since 2012.

"I remember the moment I found out that women's boxing was being introduced into the Olympics in 2012 in London. I made it my goal then, that I wanted to go to the Rio Olympics in 2016," Parker added. "It has been just such a massive part of my life, the Olympics, I've always been so obsessed about it. It makes me so sad to think that kids that have the same dream are going to have it shattered for them."

Australia have the largest boxing contingent at the Paris Games with 12 boxers, and Garside said it was key for them to make the most of their opportunities and continue the growth of the sport in the country ahead of the 2032 Olympics in Brisbane.

"Boxing in Australia is in such a good spot and it's exciting to be part of it. Obviously, we've got such a massive team here at the Olympics, 12 athletes," the 27-year-old added. "I have said it publicly, we're going to win multiple medals. We're two Olympics away from Brisbane, a home Olympics. If we can win a few medals here I think it would just make boxing so much bigger in Brisbane."

She posted on April 4, “Get your protection on and your heart in the right place," on X. "The world is very obviously changing right now and if you ever needed to pick a side, the time to do right in your life is now. Stay strong you got this.”

Then on April 5, she wrote in all caps, “Wake up wake up the apocalypse is here. Everyone who has ears listen. Your time to choose what you believe is now.”

Several conspiracy theories, such as those about vaccines, and posts about the end of the world can also be seen on her social media.

The woman committed the act of stabbing her partner and throwing her kids hours before the eclipse reached its totality in Southern California, said Lt Guy Golan.

Even though Johnson's posts have been reviewed by the detectives, the police have denied the possibility that the eclipse acted as a contributing or precipitating factor to the killings. According to the authorities, Johnson and her 29-year-old partner Jaelen, Allen Chaney, had an argument late on Monday after which she stabbed him and fled away with the kids in a Porsche Cayenne.

In the least expected site, a home in an affluent community in Los Angeles has been buried under mountains of garbage, which has left the residents enraged.

“It’s a fire hazard. It’s filthy,” said Miriam Kosberg, who is a member of the family that owns the property which has been located just behind the Fairfax dumping ground since 1955, while speaking to the Los Angeles Times.

As per Realtor.com, the median price range is $3.42 million in Fairfax section of Los Angeles.

“There’s garbage all the way up to the back fence. It’s been like that for years,” said Kosberg.

Because of a huge pile of newspapers, white trash bags, cartons of cigarettes and clothing, the lawn was hardly visible and a complaint was filed by the residents.

A woman, who has been living in the neighbourhood for more than two decades, said that “it’s unsanitary". The woman said that she had filed a complaint regarding the property in the early 2000s. Dozens of similar complaints have been received by the Department of Building and Safety since July which remain under investigation, revealed city records. The department also issued an order to comply in November. “We are fed up, but we’re compassionate. In a perfect world, he gets help and someone helps make his environment nicer for him,” said the woman, while speaking about the property’s owner. Since the beginning of the year, downtown LA has experienced nearly double its average rainfall—totalling almost 16 inches (40.64 cm) by early February. The heightened rainfall has led to a number of mudslides and structural concerns, prompting authorities to red-tag 16 buildings as unsafe and yellow-tagging over 30 others, restricting access to them.

While the immediate threat has been addressed, there remains a possibility of additional rainfall over the weekend, as forecasted by the National Weather Service.

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert injured himself during his side's 7-24 loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday. During the encounter, the 25-year-old fractured the index finger on his throwing hand, according to coach Brandon Staley. The coach, however, has no information on his return. The team is expected to know more details about his recovery process in the next few days.

Herbert has been a regular part of the Chargers' offence XI for as many as 62 consecutive games, i.e. the second-longest active streak by a quarterback (after Josh Allen, 84). Herbert said as quoted by ESPN, "It's tough. You feel bad for hanging the team out like that. You never want to be taken out of the game ... it is something that we'll know more as the week goes on and if there's any chance to play, I'll do everything I can to be out there."

Talking about Herbert's injury, the youngster sustained it after a blow from Broncos defensive end Zach Allen in the second quarter. He completed a pass to tight end Donald Parham Jr. on the play, got up and looked at his right hand but stayed in the game for the rest of the series before heading to the locker room. He did not return after that. "I can't remember whether it got hit on a helmet or whether it hit on someone's shoulder pads," Herbert stated, "but I just remember coming up and it wasn't feeling right," he added.

Easton Stick led the Chargers to their solitary touchdown on a drive where he finished a 57-yard pass to Quentin Johnston before Austin Ekeler ran in for the score four plays later. Stick ended the encounter with 13-of-24 passing for 179 yards. "I hadn't played in a while, but that's part of the job. I've been here [for] five years. I've gotten to watch Justin, and I've watched Philip [Rivers] play and play really well. That's the standard. Just went out there and tried to compete, did the best I can," he said after the match.

United States President Joe Biden on Friday (Dec 8) unveiled a $3 billion investment for a high-speed rail project to connect Las Vegas and Los Angeles. Addressing an event at the Las Vegas Carpenters International Training Center, President Biden said, "You have no idea how much this pleases me. A long last, we're building the first high-speed rail project in our nation's history, and it's starting here. It's part of the $ 8.2 billion investment we're making in ten major rail projects across America, reaching tens of millions of people. We're putting high-speed rail on the fast track." "Some of you know what it's like to sit in traffic on the interstate, not the one between here and LA, which is real, but all interstates. And guess what? Trying to make that drive from LA to Las Vegas, from Las Vegas to LA or anywhere in between is a paint on your neck," he added. A reduction in trip time He pointed out that the new rail project will reduce the trip (from LA to Las Vegas and Las Vegas to LA) time from seven hours to just three hours. "And it won't just get there faster, the rail project reduces carbon emissions by three... Is the same as taking three million vehicles off the highway. Three million. And all the studies show, by the way, people get from point A to point B faster on a train than their car. They take the train. They take the train. Think of what that's going to mean to the environment," Biden further said during the event. Also read: Biden says 'not sure' if he'd be seeking re-election next year if Trump wasn't his rival The new project would transport 11 million passengers a year and would also create ample employment opportunities, the president added. "Ultimately, it's going to take folks in Los Angeles through the Central Valley all the way to San Francisco for less than 3 hours. But today, the journey can take 8 hours by bus or car. Think of how this train will transform California's Central Valley with new businesses, new residents, visitors, and economic opportunities," he said. "This project is California's most ambitious rail project in the entire Western Hemisphere. It expects to carry 31 million passengers a year, will be 100% powered by renewable energy, and once again, this project is about jobs." Upcoming rail projects Biden also said during Friday's event that his administration was supporting 69 rail projects still in the early stages across 44 states. "On top of that, we're investing $9 billion to replace over 1000 Amtrak engines and cars across the country with scale-of-the-art equipment made in America by American workers. Made in America by American workers," said the president.
