Manchester United are an exceptional team and their midweek comeback win over Atalanta in the Champions League showed they have the quality to cause any team problems, Liverpool boss Juergen Klopp said on Friday.

United were 2-0 down to the Italian side at Old Trafford before mounting a spirited second-half comeback to win 3-2 and move to the top of their group.

Former United midfielder and television pundit Paul Scholes suggested Klopp, whose side visit Old Trafford on Sunday, may have been "rubbing his hands together" at halftime after watching their first-half performance, but the German manager said that was not the case.

"I wasn`t rubbing my hands watching that game, there was no reason for it. Atalanta caused United some problems but even in the first half, United had three clear-cut chances," Klopp told reporters.

"The second half was a pure power presentation of United going for it. With the quality they have, they can cause any team problems.

United are winless in their last three league games, losing twice to drop down to sixth. Klopp said they would be hurting ahead of one of the marquee fixtures of the season.

"We all know how the world in football is. United-Liverpool is a massive game," Klopp added.

"I think they aren`t overly happy with the results they`ve got so far, but we all know that they are able to do incredible stuff. That`s how it is, we saw it already."

The match will feature a highly-anticipated meeting between United`s Cristiano Ronaldo and Liverpool`s Mohamed Salah, but Klopp said there was no point trying to compare the two players.

"Why should you compare Cristiano and Salah? Both are world class players," he said.

"I would say Mo`s left foot is probably better and maybe Cristiano in the air is better and with his right foot. Speed-wise, both are quick and they`re both desperate to score goals."

Klopp said midfielder Curtis Jones had returned to training and could be in contention to play but Thiago Alcantara has still not fully recovered from a calf problem.

City felt they should have had a penalty when Milner appeared to push Foden in the back but the appeal was waved away by referee Paul Tierney -- the first of a series of decisions which infuriated Guardiola.

Foden was causing Liverpool constant problems and De Bruyne should have found the target with a diving header from his cross to the back post.

Somehow Liverpool survived to the break without conceding and they came out for the second half determined to shift the momentum in the game.

They did just that when they grabbed the lead in the 59th minute as Salah skipped away from Joao Cancelo and threaded the ball into the path of the sprinting Mane who confidently fired past goalkeeper Ederson.

But City were level 10 minutes later when Gabriel Jesus cut in from the right, taking four Liverpool defenders out of the game, before finding Foden who drilled the ball into the far, bottom corner of the net.

Neither side were in the mood to settle for a point with the home fans roaring on their team and City sensing there were more opportunities to come.

The German even said that if players are claiming if it is their 'freedom' not to be jabbed, they might as well argue it is their right to drink and drive.&nbsp;

The law is not there to protect me when I've had two beers and want to drive, it is there to protect all the other people because I am drunk and want to drive a car."

"There is no other sport in the world with such a relentless calendar, no physical sport," he said.&nbsp;

"There are more demanding sports like athletics and marathons but they don't run 20 or 30 or 40 a year.

"We all know why it's happening. Whatever people say that it's about giving different countries opportunities, in the end it's all about money. That's how it is."

Klopp said if the World Cup became a biennial event it was certain that the European Championship would switch to being held every two years, meaning international players would be limited to a three-week break every year.

"At one point somebody has to start understanding that without the players -- the most important ingredients of this wonderful game -- we cannot play it," he said.

Crystal Palace manager Vieira, who played under Wenger at Arsenal, called his old boss a "visionary" but conceded having the World Cup every two years would lessen the importance of the competition.

"For me I think that it will lose a little bit of its importance to have the World Cup every two years," said Vieira, who won the 1998 World Cup with France.

"Something we need to take into consideration is the physical aspect and what we are asking the players to do," he added.&nbsp;

"We have to evaluate the risk of having the players play so many games with so little rest."

An injury to French international midfielder N`Golo Kante added to Tuchel`s problems at the interval but the German tactician made a double switch during the break which helped his side cope with the pressure from Juergen Klopp`s side. 
 
Until the penalty incident, Chelsea had played with verve and creativity after taking the lead through Kai Havertz.

Liverpool have refused to allow Mohamed Salah to travel to Africa for World Cup qualifiers with Egypt next month because he would be forced to quarantine on his return to England, the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) said on Monday.

It opens up the possibility of similar refusals from other European clubs ahead of next month’s World Cup qualifiers in Africa, Asia, the CONCACAF region, Europe and South America, and puts them on a potential collision course with FIFA.

A statement from the EFA said Liverpool had apologised for not allowing the Egypt captain to travel home for their Group F qualifier against Angola in Cairo on Sept. 2 and the trip to Gabon three days later.

“The English club’s letter referred to the precautionary measures applied in England to confront the outbreak of the coronavirus, which forces returnees from some countries to compulsory health isolation for a period of 10 days upon their return to England.

“In its letter, the English club also expressed its hope that the Egyptian association would understand that it was forced to do so, in the face of the player being subjected to a quarantine,” the EFA statement added.

The club have made no comment but the Liverpool Echo newspaper on Monday said the European Club Association, of which Liverpool are members, have agreed a collective position in refusing to release players for international duty next week should they have to quarantine on their return.

FIFA has scrapped the exemption introduced last year, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, which allowed clubs to refuse to release players for international duty should travel restrictions be imposed or there be a mandatory period of quarantine or self-isolation of at least five days on their return.

“The temporary amendment was in place until April 2021 and is no longer currently in effect nor is it intended to be applied for September,” a spokesman for FIFA, world soccer's governing body, told Reuters.

“Since the outset of the pandemic, FIFA has continued to work in close cooperation with the confederations, member associations and respective authorities, monitoring the different restrictions and exemptions around the world.

"The regulations have reflected this process, as best as is possible at the global level. FIFA is confident that the situation will continue as it was the case in June for qualifiers and final continental tournaments and that players will be able to travel to play with their national teams and return to play with their clubs,” it added.

Klopp's side perhaps suffered more than most during the COVID-19 restrictions which meant their 2019-20 title season, their first since 1990, was concluded in empty stadiums. 
 
While the pandemic is still ongoing, a lifting of restrictions in Britain mean the season has kicked off with traditional atmospheres inside stadiums. 
 
Fans of promoted Norwich were in good voice and although Liverpool rather ruined the party, Klopp said it was a day for all fans to celebrate a return to normality. 
 
"It's great to see the fans back and I hope that Norwich celebrated as well because they had an exceptional season," Klopp said. "The occasion was great. It was exactly what we expected and what we`d missed for so long. 
 
"I applauded the Norwich fans as well because it's so nice to have fans back, wherever they come from. I could see in the eyes of the players they had to get used to it again. Everybody has to get used to the atmosphere. 
 
"It's cool. Football is back."

Liverpool and Chelsea seized the final two Champions League places in a dramatic end to the Premier League season on Sunday, leaving Leicester heartbroken for the second consecutive campaign.

With Manchester City already guaranteed a third title in four years and Manchester United certain to finish second, the focus was on the battle for the remaining two places in the top four.

Heading into the 38th and last round of fixtures, just one point separated Chelsea in third place from Leicester in fifth.

Two Sadio Mane goals gave Liverpool a 2-0 win at home to Crystal Palace, while Thomas Tuchel's Chelsea were indebted to a late Leicester collapse against Tottenham at the King Power Stadium.

Chelsea lost 2-1 at Aston Villa but were saved by the 4-2 defeat for Brendan Rodgers' FA Cup winners.

Liverpool had to celebrate the club's first league triumph for 30 years in an empty stadium last season and their Premier League title defence was blown off course by a series of injuries to key players.

But they avoided the financial hit of missing out on Europe's top club competition by finding their form in the final months of the season, winning eight of their last 10 games to finish third.

"Outstanding, best I could've dreamt of -- we wanted this feeling, this game, this atmosphere," Jurgen Klopp told the BBC after the win in front of 10,000 fans.

"Finishing the season in third is incredible, I can't believe it -- credit to the boys. I can't believe how it worked out in the last few weeks, incredible."

Chelsea were on the brink of missing out on a top-four finish, trailing at Villa Park as goals from Bertrand Traore and Anwar El Ghazi put the home side 2-0 up.

Ben Chilwell pulled a goal back, but in the end Chelsea were saved by the Leicester result to finish fourth, meaning they can now focus on next weekend's Champions League final against Manchester City knowing they are in the competition next season.

Tuchel admitted Chelsea had been "lucky" to qualify.

"We had enough chances," he said. "We did not score, conceded two cheap goals and it was a defeat in the end. We are lucky to escape today."

Leicester were left to dwell on another agonising near-miss, just a week after winning the FA Cup for the first time in their history.&nbsp;

The Foxes, forced to settle for a Europa League spot, also missed out on the top four on the final day of last season when they were beaten by Manchester United.

Leicester ended with more days in the Premier League's top four than any other side this season, adding to their sense of frustration.

They appeared to be on the brink of a stunning end to their campaign as two Jamie Vardy penalties saw them lead 2-1 with 16 minutes to go, but a Kasper Schmeichel own goal and two late Gareth Bale strikes completed a turnaround for Spurs.

Harry Kane was also on the scoresheet in potentially his final match for Spurs to win his third Golden Boot award.&nbsp;

The England captain finished one ahead of Liverpool's Mohamed Salah on 23 goals and also picked up the prize for most assists in the season with 14.

"It's hugely disappointing for us," said Rodgers. "We fought so hard all season. I always said you're judged after 38 games and unfortunately we couldn't quite make it."

West Ham secured a Europa League spot by beating Southampton 3-0 while Fulham, West Brom and Sheffield United had already been relegated.

Tottenham finished seventh to take a Europa Conference League spot.
