Ukrainian air defences early Monday (May 1) shot down 15 out of 18 missiles launched by Russian forces as Moscow intensifies its offensive. Taking to Telegram, Valeriy Zaluzhnyi, the commander-in-chief of Ukraine's armed forces, said, "Around 2:30 am (1130 GMT), the Russian invaders attacked Ukraine from strategic aviation planes," the news agency Reuters reported.

Kyiv's city officials, meanwhile, said that all missiles directed at the capital city were destroyed in what they said was the second attack on the city in three days. The city administration posted on Telegram that there were no casualties among the civilian population and no destruction of residential facilities or infrastructure.

Air defence systems were also called into action to shield the Kyiv region.

Russia also launched missiles at other Ukrainian regions overnight, including on Dnipropetrovsk and Mykola Lukashuk, the head of the Dnipro region council, said. Air defence crews shot down seven missiles, while 25 people needed medical help. The eastern Ukrainian city of Pavlohrad was struck twice overnight, Reuters reported.

Monday's missile strikes come after a Ukrainian strike on a Russian border village of Suzemka killed four people and injured two others on Saturday. Bogomaz said that one shell hit a residential house sparking a fire and that two more houses were damaged, adding the village declared a state of emergency.

"Work is continuing on the removal of rubble. In the areas where operational measures have been completed, a damage assessment commission has begun working," the local governor said.

Ukraine war: Ukrainian air defences shoot down 15 of 18 Russian missiles launched

The war in Ukraine began with a promise. A promise from Russia that the special operation would end in weeks. Weeks, turned into months, months turned into a year. Now fourteen months since the day the conflict started, Ukraine is preparing a spring counter-offensive, even though western F-16 jets have still not been deployed.

Ukraine has formally launched a protest with its ally Poland for an import ban enforced in the country's agricultural produce. The ban comes as local Polish farmers have raised some serious objections to the influx of Ukrainian produce that reportedly resulted in a decline in prices.

In an interview aired on Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that if the Russians had attacked his Kyiv headquarters at the outset of the conflict, he would have battled to his death with his inner circle.

"I know how to shoot. Could you imagine (a headline like) 'The President of Ukraine is taken captive by Russians?' This is a disgrace. I believe this would be a disgrace," the Ukrainian president told the 1+1 television channel.

Amid Russian missiles and drones that have been causing panic in Kyiv for the past year, it is a fireball-like phenomenon now in the skies which is causing anxiety in the conflict-ridden country. An intense burst of light in the skies over the Ukrainian capital city of Kyiv on Wednesday set off panic buttons in the country's defences which initiated an air raid alarm to caution people.

As soon as the images and videos of the bright light in Kyiv skies went public, netizens started calling it out as an alien invasion. The Ukrainian military also put rest to theories that flash light was from a Russian attack. “After verification and clarification, the information regarding the possible use of enemy aircraft or an air strike with missile weapons was not confirmed,” the military said.

Ukraine's space agency said that the light was “probably related” to meteorite entering into Earth’s atmosphere. Air sirens did initially sound in the city, as officials thought a NASA satellite or a incoming missile was heading towards the city. However, the US space agency denied that the bright flash was a satellite of theirs.

Head of Kyiv's military administration Sergiy Popko said on Telegram that a "bright glow" was seen up in the skies over Kyiv. The phenomenon was witnessed at around 10:00 pm upon which an air raid alert was activated.

Even though the alert was put in place, the air defence was not in operation, as per Popko.

Memes started to flood the internet making odd guesses about what the glowing light in the sky could be. Amid all the panic and anxiety, a post by the Ukrainian military claimed that it was a NASA satellite reentering the Earth's atmosphere.

"According to preliminary information, this phenomenon was the result of a NASA space satellite falling to Earth," Popko wrote on Telegram. "While social media is amused by flying saucer memes... please do not use the official symbol of the Air Force to create memes!" the Ukrainian air forces said.

NASA's retired satellite 'RHESSI'

A couple of days ago, NASA said that Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI), a decommissioned spacecraft, is anticipated to re-enter Earth's atmosphere in April, about 21 years after launch. According to the US space agency, there is no danger to people from it.

The 2002-launched RHESSI satellite studied solar flares and coronal mass ejections from its low-Earth orbit. It aided in advancing scientific knowledge behind the production of potent energy bursts. The US agency also stated that as it enters the atmosphere, most of the spacecraft will burn up. "But some components are expected to survive reentry," NASA said.

RHESSI has throughout the years compiled data on the enormous variety of solar flare sizes, from microscopic nanoflares to enormous superflares that are thousands of times more powerful and explosive.

Even findings unrelated to flares were achieved by RHESSI. It included improved measurements of the Sun's structure and terrestrial gamma-ray flashes, released over lightning storms. It said that the 300-kilogram (660-pound) satellite will reenter the atmosphere sometime on Wednesday. The Ukrainian Air Force also stated that the flare seen over Kyiv was "related to the fall of a satellite/meteorite."

NASA says flash was not its satellite

Even as Ukraine said it was a NASA satellite, the claim was rejected by Rob Margetta from NASA's Office of Communications. In a conversation with a UK media portal, the officials said that RHESSI satellite was in orbit when the flash of light was seen over Kyiv skies. Margetta added that the spacecraft would re-enter Earth's atmosphere in night time. He added that NASA along with US defence department is tracking the satellite.

NASA says flash was not its satellite Even as Ukraine said it was a NASA satellite, the claim was rejected by Rob Margetta from NASA's Office of Communications. Amid the ongoing Russian invasion, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday (April 7), hosted the first “official” iftar with Muslim servicemen, representatives of the diplomatic corps, and the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people outside a mosque in the centre of Kyiv, reported Kyiv Independent, an online Ukrainian newspaper. Zelensky addressed the gathering and criticised Russia’s treatment of the Muslim-minority Tatar community in Kremlin-controlled Crimea and vowed to recapture the peninsula.

“Russia’s attempt to enslave Ukraine...began exactly with the occupation of Crimea, exactly with repressions against Crimean, Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar freedom and of Crimean Muslims,” said Zelensky, reported AFP. Russia captured the Black Sea territory from Ukraine in 2014, a move which had garnered significant criticism from Kyiv and its allies in the West.

The Tatar community accounted for at least 12 to 15 per cent of the two million Crimea residents. Reports suggest that after Moscow took over Crimea, it banned the traditional assembly of the Tatar Muslim minority also known as Mejlis. Additionally, Russia has also declared it an extremist organisation and has jailed members of the community since, citing security concerns.

“There is no alternative for Ukraine, or for the world, other than the de-occupation of Crimea. We will return to Crimea,” said the Ukrainian president.

Zelensky also conferred awards to several Muslim Ukrainian servicemen and thanked the Muslim community for defending Ukraine, during the gathering for ‘iftar’ the meal breaking the daily fast during the holy month of Ramadan. He also said that Kyiv “values every person, values every community,” adding that diversity is a part of the country’s character.

“Ukraine is grateful to the Muslims of our country and to everyone in the Muslim community of the world who, like us, longs for peace and protection from evil,” said the Ukrainian president. He also later took to Twitter and wrote, “Despite the sadness and pain of war, may the holy Ramadan be bright for you! May iftar bring consolation to everyone in the world, in the Muslim community, wherever you happen to be now.”

Former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev has suggested that the troops may have to march onto cities as far as Kyiv or Lviv in Ukraine amid reports that Moscow was facing significant setbacks in the battle in the east. Considered a strong ally of President Vladimir Putin, Medvedev's statement may have unwittingly given away the position Kremlin finds itself in currently. “Nothing can be ruled out here. If you need to get to Kyiv, then you need to go to Kyiv, if to Lviv, then you need to go to Lviv in order to destroy this infection,” Medvedev was quoted as saying by Russian news agency RIA Novosti. The battle for the eastern city of Bakhmut has significantly drained the resources of the Russian side, according to multiple media reports. Since the war began over a year ago, no place has witnessed a battle as fierce as Bakhmut. WATCH | Can Putin be arrested by the international criminal court? Medvedev, who served as Russia's president from 2008 to 2012, has emerged as one of the most hawkish leaders in recent times — routinely issuing blustery and hyperbolic statements. Earlier this week, he issued a hypersonic missile attack threat to the International Criminal Court (ICC) after the global organisation issued an arrest warrant against Putin. "I'm afraid, gentlemen, everyone is answerable to God and missiles. It's quite possible to imagine how a hypersonic Oniks fired from a Russian warship in the North Sea strikes the court building in the Hague," Medvedev wrote on Telegram. "It can't be shot down, I'm afraid. And the court is just a pathetic international organisation, not the people of a NATO country. So, they won't start a war. They'll be scared. And no one will be sorry." A day after Ukraine slammed the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for attempting to find ways to allow Russian athletes to compete, Moscow has responded. Russia's Olympic Committee chief Stanislav Pozdnyakov on Tuesday said Russian athletes should not be subjected to different conditions from those of other countries. "Russians must participate exactly on the same conditions as all other athletes. Any additional conditions or criteria are unwelcome, especially any that have political overtones, which are completely unacceptable for the Olympic movement," said Pozdnyakov. On Monday, Ukraine's presidential aide Mykhaylo Podolyak took to Twitter to post a message, terming IOC as a 'promoter of war'. "(The) IOC is a promoter of war, murder and destruction. The IOC watches with pleasure Russia destroying Ukraine and then offers Russia a platform to promote genocide and encourages their further killings," tweeted Podolyak. "Obviously Russian money that buys Olympic hypocrisy doesn't have a smell of Ukrainian blood. Ukraine's sports minister has already issued a warning that his country and its athletes will boycott the 2024 Olympics if IOC continues to entertain the Russians.
