As both the leaders exchanged words over a call, they discussed a fresh $19 billion financial aid for Ukraine. However, Zelensky asserted an early transaction of the first chunk of the assistance. Another matter was the supply of 'appropriate' weapons for the war-struck nation.

In December 2022, the European Union provided Ukraine with a 'megadeal.' The aid included a 15 per cent global corporate tax rate adoption for Ukraine, the second-largest European country.

Later, Zelensky appealed for the absence of hindrances in Kyiv's support due to the conflict between the 27-nation bloc.

However, a spokesperson for the chairman of EU leaders confirmed the date and openly invited President Zelensky to visit Brussels. Later, he confirmed that the invitation does not imply that the summit's venue would be in Brussels.&nbsp;

EU revealed that the summit's objective is to discuss the further expansion of help it can provide to Ukraine in its war against Russia. The Commission and the council of the 27 EU leaders, considered the two foundation pillars of the EU, will also discuss Ukraine's approach to membership in the coalition.&nbsp;

Since the beginning of the war in February 2022, Zelensky has made continuous virtual appearances at EU summits. However, he made his first in-person visit after the onset of the war in Washington on Wednesday.&nbsp;

Around 40 per cent of the total population in Kyiv was left without electricity after the recent wave of Russian missile strikes on the Ukrainian capital, mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Thursday.

"Forty per cent of the capital's consumers are without electricity after the Russian attack," Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on social media in the aftermath of the massive missile strikes.

Earlier, three people were injured as Russia launched “more than hundred” missiles towards Ukraine with Kyiv, Kharkiv and Lviv being the worst hit. Lviv, a city quite close to the border with Poland, was completely left without electricity, mayor Andriy Sadoviy said on social media platform Telegram.

"The enemy is attacking Ukraine from various directions with air and sea-based cruise missiles from strategic aircraft and ships," Ukraine's air force said on social media according to Reuters.

While no official number was provided by the Russian authorities, Ukrainian presidential aide Mykhaylo Podolyak said that more than 120 missiles had been fired by the 'evil Russian world’.

Kharkiv governor Oleg Synegubov and mayor Igor Terekhov also said that the city’s "critical infrastructure" was targeted with major parts getting hit by as many as four missiles.

The Ukrainian army also released an official statement claiming that the defence system was successful in shooting down 54 out of 69 missiles which were launched by Russia.

"According to preliminary data, 69 missiles were launched in total. Fifty-four enemy cruise missiles were shot down," Ukraine's commander-in-chief General Valeriy Zaluzhny said.

"If electricity supply continues to be absent while outside temperatures remain low, we will unfortunately be forced to drain water from buildings," he said.

"Otherwise the water can freeze and break the entire water supply network, and buildings will then be totally unfit for further use."

He told reporters in Brussels that "the specific decisions on specific systems are national decisions".&nbsp;

"Sometimes there are end user&nbsp;agreements and other things so they need to consult with other allies. But at the end of the day, it (the decision) has to be taken by the national governments," he&nbsp;added.&nbsp;

In the aftermath of the attack, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and other cabinet ministers said that the attempts to regain power in various parts of Kyiv was deeply impacted by the fresh round of missile strikes and the official reports also claimed that three, including a teenager, were killed.&nbsp;

"The leadership of&nbsp;Ukraine&nbsp;has every opportunity to bring the situation back to normal," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said before adding that they just need to agree to Russia’s conditions.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko said that the power was still cut off for many parts of the city and it had started affecting the water services for a majority of the city’s residents. &nbsp;&nbsp;

"Seventy per cent of the capital remains without electricity. Energy companies are making every effort to return it as soon as possible," he told Kyiv Post when asked about the latest developments.&nbsp;

Earlier, the Union Nations criticised Russia’s constant attack on key infrastructures around the Ukrainian capital and said that the winter can be “life threatening” for around 10 million citizens.&nbsp;

Head Patriarch Kirill of the Russian Orthodox Church, has strongly supported Russia's Ukraine invasion. He condemned action by the Ukrainian security services as "act of intimidation". Ukrainian security service SBU said it took the action counter &nbsp;"destructive activities of Russian special services in Ukraine."

"These measures are being taken ... as part of the systemic work of the SBU to counter the destructive activities of Russian special services in Ukraine," said SBU in a statement.

It said the search was aimed at preventing the use of the cave monastery as "the centre of the Russian world" and carried out to look into suspicions "about the use of the premises ... for sheltering sabotage and reconnaissance groups, foreign citizens, weapons storage".

The concept of "Russian world" is important part of President Vladimir Putin's new foreign policy doctrine that aims to protect Russia's language, culture and religion.

The SBU did not say what was the outcome of Tuesday's raid.

Meanwhile, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the area around the Black Sea port of Odesa and more than a dozen other regions are grappling with power shortages following relentless Russian attacks on energy infrastructure, Ukrainian president&nbsp; Volodymyr Zelensky has said.

"The situation with power supplies is difficult in 17 regions and in the capital. Things are very difficult in Kyiv region and the city of Kyiv, Odesa region and also Vynnitsia and Ternopil (areas in western and south-western Ukraine)," the Ukrainian president said on Friday in his nightly video address.

The video, verified by BBC, shows a car heading down a rainy road in Dnipro, before nearly missing and getting hit by an explosion. The Mirror reported that the attack wounded at least 14 people. Dnipro mayor Borys Filatov was quoted by the media as saying, “During today’s rocket (attack), a city hall employee and her colleague were just doing their job. Helping infirm elderly women."

The Ukrainian President shared the video with the caption - &nbsp;“This is another confirmation from Dnipro of how terrorists want peace. The peaceful city and people’s wish to live their accustomed lives. Going to work, to their affairs. A rocket attack!”

In recent weeks, Russia has increasingly targeted the civilian energy infrastructure of Ukraine in order to pile pressure on the Eastern European nation. Ukraine’s state-backed energy company Naftogaz disclosed that the Russian missile strikes launched on Thursday dismantled or damaged some of Ukraine’s gas production facilities, the Mirror reported.

Naftogaz chief executive Oleksiy Chernyshov said in a statement, “Currently, we know of several objects that have been destroyed. Others have suffered damage of varying degrees.” Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said that Russian missiles&nbsp;also hit the building of the Pivdennyi Machine-Building Plant, Ukraine’s largest aerospace manufacturer. The Kyiv administration reported that air defences shot down at least two cruise missiles and five Iranian-made exploding drones, but some missiles managed to hit Odesa and Dnipro.
