On the Russian front, the deputy head of Russia’s Security Council Dmitry Medvedev met with Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss various topics including “the conflict in Ukraine”. Reuters reported that this was the latest set of meetings held by the two countries regarding the stance over US interference.&nbsp;

Even the World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Monday that the winter can be “life threating” for people in Ukraine as around 10 million of them will have to stay without electricity.

“The devastating energy crisis, the deepening mental health emergency, constraints on humanitarian access and the risk of viral infections will make this winter a formidable test for the Ukrainian health system,” WHO said in their report.

In recent weeks, Russia has increasingly targeted the civilian energy infrastructure of Ukraine in order to pile pressure on the Eastern European nation. Ukraine’s state-backed energy company Naftogaz disclosed that the Russian missile strikes launched on Thursday dismantled or damaged some of Ukraine’s gas production facilities, the Mirror reported.

Naftogaz chief executive Oleksiy Chernyshov said in a statement, “Currently, we know of several objects that have been destroyed. Truss is chiefly known in Russia for a visit she made to Moscow in February, when she and foreign minister Sergei Lavrov held a rancorous meeting. Lavrov described their conversation as like a dialogue between deaf and mute people, complaining that facts had "bounced off" her.

Truss has made geographic gaffes before, including on one occasion when she mixed up the Black and Baltic seas.

Truss openly challenged Lavrov at their meeting over Russia's troop build-up near Ukraine, saying: "I can't see any reason for having 100,000 troops stationed on the border, apart from to threaten Ukraine."

Since then, Britain has been one of the most active and vocal supporters of Ukraine after Moscow sent troops into the country on February 24, and has been supplying Kyiv with weapons and training.

Kremlin to hold referendums in captured Ukrainian territories to join Russia

The Kremlin on Tuesday announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin will travel to Tehran on July 19 with Iran President Ebrahim Raisi and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The leaders will attend a Syria summit.&nbsp;

News of Putin's Iran visit has come just when United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has agreed to to extend a vital system for cross-border aid to war-ravaged Syria by six months.

"Russia forced the hand of everyone. Either close the mechanism or only six months. We cannot let people die," one ambassador told AFP on condition of anonymity.

The aid delivery mechanism across Turkey's border into rebel-held Syria at the Bab al-Hawa crossing is the only way United Nations assistance can reach civilians without navigating areas controlled by Syrian government forces.

The system, in place since 2014, had expired on Sunday.

In the latest update on the war, the eastern Ukrainian city of Lysychansk continues to repel Russian attacks, local authorities said on Tuesday, after Moscow's troops took control of the neighbouring key city of Severodonetsk.

"Lysychansk keeps on defending," Lugansk region governor Sergiy Gaiday said on Telegram.

According to Gaiday, of the 95,000 people that lived in the city before Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, around 15,000 remain.&nbsp;

"The Lugansk region is becoming a total ruin. The damage to the villages is catastrophic," he said.

He also said that several people "had to undergo amputations", after being wounded in a Russian strike on Monday. The strike killed eight people in Lysychansk and wounded 21 others.

Lysychansk is the Russian forces' next target in their bid to take the whole of Ukraine's eastern Donbas area, made of the Lugansk and Donetsk regions.

Over the weekend, they captured Lysychansk's twin city, Severodonetsk, after weeks of fierce fighting.

Kremlin on Friday (April 22) said that Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet UN chief Antonio Guterres next week.

The Kremlin has declined to comment regarding Russia's crackdown on the press last month passing a law that bans the dissemination of deliberately false information making dissent in Russia even more dangerous and offenders may face up to 15 years in jail.

Russia&nbsp;is "frightened" by journalists "who can tell the truth", said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. &nbsp;

This remark came as the Kremlin seems to have attempted to prevent Russians from reading or watching an interview he gave over the invasion in Ukraine. &nbsp;

In a statement on Sunday, Russian media watchdog Roskomnadzor issued a warning to news outlets against rebroadcasting or distributing the interview of Zelensky by some independent journalists. &nbsp;

"Roskomnadzor warns the Russian media not to publish this interview. The media outlets conducting the interviews will be subject to scrutiny to determine the extent of responsibility and the appropriate response to be taken," the agency said. &nbsp;

The journalists, who interviewed the Ukrainian president, were Vladimir Solovyov of Moscow newspaper Kommersant, Tikhon Dzyadko from recently shuttered channel TV Rain, Ivan Kolpakov from Latvia-based website Meduza and prominent writer Mikhail Zygar. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Ahead of the interview, Novaya Gazeta editor Dmitry Muratov, who won Nobel Peace Prize last year, submitted questions for Zelensky.

"We have laws in place, and it is very important not to publish information that would amount to a violation of these laws," Peskov added. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The Kremlin said on Monday that Russian investigators would look into a video circulated on social media that purported to show Ukrainian forces mistreating captured Russian soldiers.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said the video, which he said contained "monstrous images", needed to be legally assessed and for those who took part in what he described as torture to be held responsible.

"Currently, no one can confirm or deny the veracity of this video. It's not known where it's happening, or who the participants are," military spokesperson Oleksander Motuzyanyk said.

"The enemy produces and shares videos with the inhuman treatment of alleged 'Russian prisoners' by 'Ukrainian soldiers' in order to discredit the Ukrainian Defence Forces," Zaluzhny said.

Ukraine's armed forces respect international norms, Zaluzhny said, accusing Russia of producing such videos in order to discredit Ukrainian soldiers. He did not provide any evidence to support his accusation.

According to Kyiv, seven Russian generals have been killed since the invasion was launched on February 24, in what Western officials say would be an unusually high casualty rate among military top brass.

It is not possible to independently verify this figure and official Russian sources have so far confirmed only the death of one general and another senior naval commander.

According to the Ukraine defence ministry on Friday, the seventh Russian general to lose his life was Lieutenant General Yakov Rezantsev who was killed in fighting in Chornobaivka outside the southern city of Kherson.

With its aspirations for a quick victory dashed by a stiff Ukrainian resistance, Russia has increasingly focused on grinding down Ukraine’s military in the east in the hope of forcing Kyiv into surrendering part of the country’s territory to possibly end the war.

The bulk of the Ukrainian army is concentrated in eastern Ukraine, where it has been locked up in fighting with Moscow-backed separatists in a nearly eight-year conflict. If Russia succeeds in encircling and destroying the Ukrainian forces in the country’s industrial heartland called Donbas, it could try to dictate its terms to Kyiv and, possibly, attempt to split the country in two.

The Russian military declared that the “first stage of the operation” had been largely accomplished, allowing Russian troops to concentrate on their “top goal — the liberation of Donbas.”

Many observers say the shift in strategy could reflect President Vladimir Putin’s acknowledgment that his plan for a blitz in Ukraine has failed, forcing him to narrow his goals and change tactics amid a disastrous war that has turned Russia into a pariah and decimated its economy.
