23 EU lawmakers visit Kashmir in personal capacity

A delegation of 23 European lawmakers visited Jammu and Kashmir to assess the situation in the valley after the abrogation of Section 370.

The European Union parliamentary delegation, comprising parliamentarians from the United Kingdom, Poland, France, and other countries interacted with locals in Kashmir valley to get a first-hand understanding of the situation.

It is the first foreign delegation that has been allowed to visit Kashmir after the scrapping of article 370 which accorded special status to the state. Earlier, the citizens of J&K had special rights about ownership of property, fundamental rights, and relating to citizenship.

Henri Malosse, a parliamentarian from Poland expressed shock at seeing news which referred to the delegation as racists, fascists, and Islamophobic. ''We were in Bangladesh earlier. We are thankful to the Indian government for this [visit]. This will help us better understand things. This is a fight against terrorists. We have heard that five innocent workers were killed. We are pleased to meet activists who spoke about the future and peace'', Malosse said. He also referred to the abrogation of Article 370 as India's "internal matter''.

Theirry Mariani from France simply wanted a firsthand account of what's happening in Kashmir, while suggesting that terrorism is capable of destroying a country. ''I was in Afghanistan and Syria. I don’t want Kashmir to become another Afghanistan. The situation isn’t finishing in the Middle East. New places for terrorists can become Kashmir... we want development. We aren’t here to interfere with politics'', Mariani said.

While referring to the shooting of five workers in the valley, Bill Newton Dunn from the United Kingdom said that ''it’s a terrible thing''.

''Since 1945, we [European Union] have been living in peace together. India is a peaceful country. We want to know how we can help and support people. We had a meeting with the teachers and civil society. Someone talked about the corruption in the system. We are here for facts'', Dunn added.

Ryszard Czarnecki from Poland perceives terrorism in Kashmir as a global issue. ''Terrorism in Kashmir is not the problem of India alone; I see it as our problem, the international community. We support India for finding the best solution to the problem. We are here to understand your problem. In our opinion, this is important for our national relations. We can inform our parliament about this'', he added.

Malosse added that the fact that India has a free press is a good sign, all the while being ''very impressed by the beauty and the engagement with the people [whom they] met''.

Along the same lines, Mariani from France called the visit an ''excellent experience'', which helped them understand the ground situation better. ''We believe in transparency. I felt bad [when people called] us Nazi lovers. We came from our respective countries... [and] can never be citizens of Kashmir.'' Mariana further added that terrorism is a common problem for the world.

The media reportage of events in Jammu and Kashmir has been a hot topic ever since Article 370 was scrapped. Dunn called it a ''world problem''. ''It is a long-term problem also caused by social media. Journalists have a big responsibility. Our media is not so good at facts'', Dunn added.

When asked about the state of minorities in Pakistan, Mariani told WION that he's worried about the treatment accorded to Christians in the neighbouring country. ''Freedom of religion is important [so that] everyone can practice [their] religion'', he said.

Travel advisories across Europe had recently warned people against visiting Jammu & Kashmir. While talking about this, Mariani said to WION, ''We can say to the people that this is a good place. They have good art and handicraft. The fight against terrorists is a condition for the population.''

Czarnecki extended support to India's fight against terrorism and said, ''We should help to find a solution to these fights. We should make efforts and support India''.

''We believe in peace and talking'', said Bill Newton Dunn. While advocating peace, he referred to the problem in Northern Island where Christians were fighting with each other. ''Now it is peaceful [there]. My advice will be to find peace'', he said.

Dunn further asserted that he would inform the parliament of what they have seen and learned from this visit. ''I think this mission could be useful. I think I will go back to the liberal group and explain what I have learned and that way we will inform the parliament'', he said.

Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has condemned the Pakistani security forces for "brutal manhandling" of the peaceful protest by people of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) against oppression and atrocities by the state agencies.

The MQM, in a statement on Wednesday, called out the security forces "for shedding crocodile tears over Jammu and Kashmir" but maltreating people of occupied Kashmir.

On Tuesday, the police raided the press club in PoK's Muzaffarabad during a media briefing by Jammu Kashmir People's National Alliance (JKPNA), which had called for a protest on Thursday outside Pakistan High Commission in London. Several journalists suffered injuries in the raid.

Two civilians were killed and over 80 others sustained injuries after police lathi-charged them during a peaceful pro-freedom rally.

The raid came on the day when people in PoK were observing "Black Day" to protest the 72nd anniversary of Kashmir's invasion by Pakistani forces in 1947.

The MQM said the security forces unleashed their terror and inflicted injuries on to the protestors on the day of the diplomat's visit.

It also appealed to the foreign diplomats that they should take notice of that barbarism and the human rights organisations should step forward and take up the case for the sake of humanity.

In yet another example signifying that Pakistan's state affairs is controlled by the Army, its spokesperson Major General Asif Ghafoor poked his nose in diplomatic affairs which are normally handled by civilian governments.
Attempting to act as a spokesperson for the Pakistan Foreign Ministry, Ghafoor tweeted on Tuesday, "What good Indian High Commission is which can't stand with its Army Chief? Indian High Commission staff didn't have the moral courage to accompany fellow diplomats in Pakistan to LOC. However, a group of foreign diplomats & media is on the way to LOC to see the truth on the ground."

Ironically, Ghafoor was making a statement in regard to India's artillery attacks on terror launchpads situated inside Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) opposite the Tangdhar sector along the LoC on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday, which killed six to ten Pakistan soldiers, and an equal number of terrorists.
Instead of acknowledging the fact that terror camps are present on its soil, Pakistan has remained adamant and instead, took diplomats and foreign journalists to the site, as a "face-saving act".

This is not the first time that Islamabad has done this.

In February this year, India had bombed a Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) terror camp in Balakot in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and a large number of terrorists were killed.

However, Pakistan rejected India's assertions and took foreign scribes to the site, in its attempt to fool the world by establishing a claim that no such airstrike took place in the region.

The Pakistan Army, which orchestrated a "soft coup" to oust former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, has retained the "dominant influence" over foreign and security policies during Prime Minister Imran Khan's tenure, a US congressional report had said earlier this year.

This purported "military-judiciary nexus" allegedly came to favor Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf, the report titled 'Pakistan Domestic Political Setting' by the Congressional Research Service (CRS) stated.

The military, which was engaged in three "outright seizures" of power from civilian-led governments, had colluded with the country's judiciary to overthrow the Pakistan Muslim League government led by Sharif, it said.

Imran Khan was elected to power last August in an election marred by violence and allegations of rigging.

Pakistan has a history of the Army taking power by usurping governments since the country gained freedom from Britain in 1947. Though Imran Khan is a pawn in their hands, they would not hesitate to gain control.

Pakistani army meddling in diplomatic affairs

The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has retained Pakistan under the Grey List, warning Islamabad of serious actions for failing to check money laundering and terror financing.

Pakistan has failed to meet 22 out of 27 tasks to control funding to terror groups operating from its soil. FATF has now granted Islamabad time till February 2020 to fulfil the full action plan.

Pakistan escaped the blacklist with the backing of Turkey, Malaysia and China. India is clearly upset that Islamabad has been given another four months to achieve all the targets to get itself off the grey list.

As part of punitive action to express displeasure over Ankara's stance on the abrogation of Article 370 and support to Pakistan at FATF plenary in Paris, India has called off Prime Minister Narendra Modi's proposed visit to Turkey.

India is also weighing a range of diplomatic actions against Malaysia which may include restricting imports of palm oil and other goods.

If Islamabad fails to make significant progress in the next four months, it will join North Korea and Iran on the FATF blacklist which would have huge impact on its already fragile economy.

Since the abrogation of Article 370, Pakistan has been crying foul over Kashmir to seek the attention of global leaders, but most leaders supported India calling Kashmir a bilateral issue between the two neighbours.

Within hours of FATF Plenary, Pakistan tried to export terror into India violating the ceasefire along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir. In retaliation, the Indian Army destroyed three terror camps in PoK.

The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has retained Pakistan under the Grey List, warning Islamabad of serious actions for failing to check money laundering and terror financing.

The country has accused India of pushing Pakistan on the blacklist with the help of some countries. At least nine people were killed Sunday in firing along the de facto India-Pakistan border in Kashmir, officials said, adding to the spike in deaths in recent days as New Delhi eased a curfew in the disputed region.

Tensions escalated between the nuclear-armed neighbours after India revoked Kashmir's autonomy on August 5 and imposed movement and communications restrictions to quell unrest.

Officials from the two countries accused each other of firing mortar rounds and small arms along the so-called Line of Control.

"Two soldiers and a civilian were killed and three others injured in the unprovoked fire by Pakistan," Indian Army spokesman Colonel Rajesh Kalia told AFP of the "unprovoked" fire in the mountainous Tangdhar region of Kupwara district.

Several homes were damaged in the attack and three civilians were being treated in a hospital, he added.

Officials in Pakistan-administered Kashmir told AFP six civilians were killed and eight others wounded in Muzaffarabad and Neelum Valley.

"Mortar shells hit civilian houses and have so far martyred five people in Muzzafarabad and wounded six others," said Muzaffarabad deputy commissioner Badar Munir said.

Munir said the dead included three members of one family.

Neelum Valley official Akhtar Ayub said one civilian was killed and two injured.

The shelling came after five people were killed in Indian Kashmir on Wednesday, two days after New Delhi restored mobile phone and text services.

Indian authorities said repeatedly during the lockdown that Kashmir has been mostly peaceful.

Kashmir has been split between India and Pakistan since 1947 and was the spark of two wars and numerous skirmishes.

An armed rebellion against Indian rule has raged in the valley since 1989, claiming tens of thousands of lives, mostly civilians.

India government has called off a proposed visit by Prime Minister Modi to Turkey, reports said Saturday.

The visit has been cancelled as part of India's punitive action to express displeasure over Ankara's stance on Jammu and Kashmir after the abrogation of Aricle 370 which granted special status to the state.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had criticised the abrogation of Article 370 in his speech at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in September.

The Article which gave special status to the erstwhile state was scrapped on August 5. The move also took away the special rights enjoyed by the people of the state and bifurcated it into two Union Territories - Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

The move comes as the latest in a pattern of India toughening its stance against countries which have consistently backed Pakistan.

The Turkish government along with Malaysia had batted for Pakistan with the tacit backing of china at FATF plenary in Paris. Following this, the money-laundering watchdog decided to keep Pakistan on the grey list.

Meanwhile, sources have told WION that there can be no question of cancellation as the visit was never planned.

The prime minister has met over 45 leaders this year and received invitations from most of them. So this should not be construed as a cancellation of any sorts, the source added.

Desperate attempt by Pakistan backed groups in Kashmir. Now, terrorists target shopkeepers in Kashmir Valley.

Apple Traders most hit by terrorists in Kashmir

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping met in Mallabarapuram near Chennai during their second informal summit a week ago.

Prior to the summit, there were speculations that the Kashmir tension would dominate the summit. Days before the summit, China and Pakistan issued a joint statement saying, "Paying close attention to the current situation in J&K.” " The Kashmir issue is a dispute left from history, and should be properly and peacefully resolved based on the UN Charter, relevant UNSC resolutions and bilateral agreements,” the statement added.

The foreign ministry had rejected the statement. "India’s position has been consistent and clear that J&K is an integral part of India. It is not for other countries to comment on the internal affairs of India,” the MEA statement said.

India also expressed concerns over China-Pakistan-Economic-Corridor that travels through the parts of Kashmir occupied by Pakistan.

China-Pakistan's joint statement had complicated the situation for India and China. However, the summit helped ease the tensions between both the countries after all the developments surrounding Kashmir.

Contrary to the speculations, the Chinese President did not raise the issue at the two-day summit. Both leaders maintained that it was important to deal with the challenges of terrorism and radicalisation in an increasingly complex world. They also discussed matters related to trade and the economy.

Beijing, the all-weather ally of Islamabad, had initially backed Pakistan over the Kashmir issue.

However, it now urged India and Pakistan to resolve the issue through dialogue, dropping the statement China had earlier made about resolving the conflict in accordance with the UN Charter and UN Security Council resolutions.

Both leaders decided they will not allow differences to become disputes. In line with the 'Wuhan Spirit' and the 'Chennai Connect', they agreed to continue this practice in the future.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump too endorsed PM Narendra Modi at the Howdy Modi event in America. PM Modi had slammed Pakistan indirectly, saying they shield and nurture terrorism. He also spoke about the abrogation of Article 370 and how the decision has irked Islamabad.

His comments were acknowledged by Trump who said that both India and the US were committed to "protecting innocent civilians from radical Islamic terrorism".

Pakistan has been crying foul over India's decision to scrap Article 370 which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir. Imran Khan and other ministers of Pakistan had even threatened India with a Nuclear war for weeks.

Khan had raised the issue at several forums following the abrogation of Article 370 seeking the intervention of global leaders, but most leaders supported India calling Kashmir a bilateral issue between the two neighbours.

No Kashmir talks: China snubs Pakistan

The killing of a non-local fruit dealer in Trenz area of Shopian by terrorists has shocked the people associated with the business in Jammu and Kashmir. Most of them feel uncertain about their harvest as they have been struggling to send their produce to the markets across India due to terror threats.

Yesterday, a group of terrorists attacked two apple dealers from Gurdaspur in Punjab when they were in the area to purchase apples from local growers. One among them, who has been identified as Charanjeet Singh died at a local hospital while his colleague Sanjay Kumar is battling his life in Srinagar hospital.

This isn’t the first target killing of a non-local in Kashmir valley after postpaid mobile connections were restored. During the same day, in broad daylight, a migrant labourer hailing from Chattisgarh was shot dead from a close range at Nihama village in south Kashmir’s Pulwama while another person who was accompanying him managed to save his life.

Sethi Kumar was working as a labourer at a brick kiln in the same district and was shot in the head. A similar incident took place on Monday evening when terrorists from the banned outfit, Jaish-e-Muhammed and Lashkar-e-Toiba killed a non-local driver from Rajasthan in Shopian when he arrived there to load apples and deliver them to Delhi.

Most affected by this have been the apple farmers, who have become a soft target of these groups at a time when their harvest was good and ready to move out of the valley.

“We suffered due to shutdown initially. Usually, these are the months to pick apples and sell them. Traders from outside would come to Kashmir and buy apples in bulk but now he (trader) isn’t sure if he would come back alive or not. How would he come?” asks Ali Mohammad, an apple fruit farmer.

Jammu and Kashmir police have now increased security in and around the areas where fruit traders operate and have also pasted posters of two terrorists namely Syed Naveed Mushtaq and Raheel Magray.

Naveed Mushtaq alias Naveed Babu was a constable with the Jammu and Kashmir police who joined banned Hizb-ul-Mujahideen outfit and became a commander. His name has surfaced in several cases earlier.
These incidents have also left non-local workers and truck drivers in a tizzy. Several migrant labours had left Kashmir when article 370 was revoked fearing hostility.

The business community, in general, is worried too. Although the administration has published advertisements in the local dailies to encourage people to resume normal life, most of the shops are still shut. Officials say the fear of terrorists targeting them has kept the shutters down.

“I feel for the farmers and assure them that all possible security will be provided to sell their harvest and fruits. I would ensure security to those apple growers and others also; who want to indulge in business and this will be our responsibility” Lt Gen KJS Dhillon, Chinar Corps Commander told media at a function.

The Kashmir valley currently accounts for 71 per cent of national apple production. Horticulture contributes 8 to 10 per cent GDP ratio and yearly records 8,000 to 1,000 crore turnover. Official figures reveal that 7 lakh people are directly or indirectly associated with this business in the Himalayan state.
