Baloch leader Mehran Marri on Saturday slammed Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan over his recent admittance of the country having had cultivated radical factions in the 1980s, saying that the world can perceive the insincerity of such admittance aimed at changing the country's image at the global stage.

"This is the first time that Pakistan's puppet Prime Minister accepted, on an international forum like the [United Nations] security council, that it harboured and trained terrorists in the 80s and 90s and now it is sorry for what it did. I think everyone can see through that statement. They are just saying this to get the funds from the US in the begging bowl," Marri said.

Khan, in his address, had admitted to Pakistan's role in training jihadists during the late 1980s and 1990s and sustaining contacts with them.

"Khan tried to portray that his country was a champion of Islam. By reciting a few verses, he tried to gain the support of the Islamic world. But I don't think that is the case. Everyone knows the reality of Pakistan and its military leadership and its puppet government," he said.

Marri deemed Khan's speech as another failed attempt by the country to drum up global support over the Kashmir issue.

"It is funny to see that the Pakistani military and its operatives are so anxious about the Kashmir issue that they are operating as an NGO, running across the planet, trying to lobby countries, to talk about the Kashmir issue," Marri said.

"Their incompetence is so visible in the fact that last Friday, they missed the deadline to pass... gather support for U.N. resolution on Kashmir. Obviously they did not have the numbers. But to miss the deadline seems like a high school homework that they missed. Incompetence is so visible in this banana republic," he added.

Pakistan has repeatedly been snubbed on international platforms and countries across the world alike on the Kashmir issue. India has maintained that the abrogation of Article 370 of the constitution that accorded special status to Jammu and Kashmir is its internal matter - a stance which has been supported by several countries, including the SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) nations.

Security forces on Saturday shot dead three terrorists who were holding hostage a civilian inside a house in Batote town of Ramban district.

The hostage was rescued safely but one Army personnel was killed in the joint operation conducted jointly by the Army, Jammu and Kashmir police and CRPF officials in the Jammu-Srinagar Highway town.

Two Army personnel and one official from the Jammu and Kashmir police also sustained injuries in the encounter with the terrorists, which had been going on since the morning.

"Three terrorists have been killed. The hostage has been rescued. Two police officials sustained bullet injuries and an Army personnel died. Operation is over now. They are the same terrorists who were seen in the morning," Jammu Inspector General of Police (IG) Mukesh Singh told ANI.

Three terrorists entered a house in Batote in the morning while attempting to flee the security forces after engaging in a gunfight with them.

The encounter started after two of three terrorists tried to stop a civilian vehicle at Batote on the National Highway (NH) 244 but the owner did not stop the vehicle and informed the Army Quick Reaction Team (QRT).

The Public Relations Officer (PRO), Defence, Jammu said: "The QRT reacted promptly, established contact with the two individuals and an exchange of fire took place."

Joint parties of Police, Army, and CRPF cordoned the area and exchange of fire ensued during which terrorists took shelter in a house.

"We got the information that terrorists have held a civilian hostage. We attempted to persuade terrorists to surrender. They refused to surrender even though they initially said they would. Their motive was to delay. SSP Ramban gave them a final warning to surrender and later we took action. It was a neat and clean action. Three terrorists have been eliminated and the hostage has been rescued," Deputy Inspector General, CRPF PC Jha said.

Earlier, Army had the information of "possibly" five terrorists inside the house where they had taken a local resident hostage.

"One Mr Vijay (also known as Vijay Tailor) is a hostage in the house where the terrorists are holed up. The complex has an electronics shop in the front and house towards the rear. Vijay is the owner. Possibly five terrorists inside the house. They have so far refused to surrender. Exchange of firing is going on," Army said in a statement earlier.

Two AK rifles and one pistol were recovered from the possession of terrorists.

Authorities in Indian Kashmir tightened restrictions on people's movements on Saturday to prevent possible protests triggered by a speech by Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Khan, in an address to the United Nations General Assembly on Friday, warned there would be a bloodbath once India lifts its restrictions in Kashmir which have been in force since it revoked the region's decades-old autonomy in August and detained thousands of people.

Soon after the speech, hundreds of Kashmiris came out of their homes, shouting slogans in support of Khan late on Friday night and calling for the independence of Kashmir.

On Saturday, police vans fitted with speakers made public announcements in some parts of Srinagar about movement restrictions, while additional troops were deployed to prevent any protests, according to officials and two witnesses.

The troops also blocked access to the main business centre of Srinagar with razor wire.

"This was necessitated after protests across Srinagar city last night soon after Imran Khan's speech," said a police official, who declined to be identified.

Muslim-majority Kashmir has long been a flashpoint between nuclear-armed India and Pakistan, which have fought two of their three wars over the divided territory. Both countries rule parts of Kashmir while claiming it in full.

India's crackdown as it revoked Kashmir's special status was accompanied by severe restrictions on movement, as well as disconnection of telephone services. Though New Delhi has eased some of the movement curbs, no prominent detainees have been freed and mobile and internet connections remain suspended.

While warning of the consequences of lifting what he described as an "inhuman curfew," Pakistani premier Khan demanded India do so and free all detainees.

In some areas in Kashmir -- including the Soura region near Srinagar which has witnessed protests in the past against India's decision -- people clashed with security forces by pelting stones on Friday night, forcing police to use tear gas to disperse them, said the Indian official.

Khan addressed the United Nations a day after the senior US diplomat for South Asia called for a lowering of rhetoric between India and Pakistan, while saying that Washington hoped to see rapid action by India to lift restrictions it has imposed in Kashmir and the release of detainees there.

Police impose restrictions in Indian Kashmir after Pakistan PM's speech

Exposing the double standards of Pakistan, the United States has asked Pakistan to express "same level" of concern about Muslims detentions in Western China as they do for Kashmir.

"I would like to see the same level of concern expressed also about Muslims who are being detained in Western China, literally in concentration-like conditions. And so being concerned about the human rights of Muslims does extend more broadly than Kashmir, and you've seen the administration very involved here during the UN General Assembly and trying to shine a light on the horrific conditions that continue to exist for Muslims throughout China," said Alice Wells, US Acting Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asia on Thursday while replying to a question about Pakistan PM's alleged concerns about Kashmir.

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan even had called himself an ambassador of Kashmiri people.

However, when it comes to China's treatment of Muslims, Pakistan has been mum and when asked to comment on it, the Pakistan PM has tried to brush it aside saying that there is a lot going on in its own country.

China has been condemned internationally for cracking down on the minorities living in their countries.

China has been accused of oppressing the Uighur by sending them to mass detention camps, interfering in their religious activities and sending the community to undergo some form of forceful re-education or indoctrination.

In an exclusive interview to Al Jazeera that was aired on August 14, Imran Khan talked in length about his version of conditions of Kashmiris and how BJP led government is "racist" and "fascist" while shockingly expressing complete ignorance on the issues being faced by Uighur Muslims.

During the interview when journalist Mohammed Jamjoom asked Khan whether he had ever got a chance to discuss the issue of Uighur Muslims with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Khan replied that he does not know "much" about the problem and Beijing is Islamabad's "best friend".

'Work it out fellas' says Trump on mediating in Kashmir to India-Pak

United States President Donald Trump again offered mediation over Kashmir on Wednesday, despite India making clear its position that its a bilateral matter between the country and Pakistan.

Confirming that Kashmir was raised during his bilateral meetings with Pakistan and India, Trump said, "We talked about Kashmir and whatever help I can be, I said I offered."

"Whether its arbitration or mediation or whatever it has to be," Trump added.

"I will do whatever I can because they are at very serious odds right now and hopefully that will get better," Trump also said.

"You look at two gentlemen heading those two countries, two good friends of mine, I said fellas work it out, just work it out. Those are two nuclear countries, they've gotta work it out," Trump also said.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of External Affairs reacting to the comments said, "Our position is very clear which was articulated by the PM and as well the foreign minister S Jaishankar."

The ministry clarified that the talks on Jammu and Kashmir took place but on "counterterrorism" and said that "there will be no change in our position".

Earlier this week as well, Trump offered to mediate between India and Pakistan over Kashmir as he met Pak PM Imran Khan on the sidelines of United Nations General Assembly.

Trump had said he is "ready, willing, and able" to meditate on the Kashmir matter if India and Pakistan want him to do so.

"If I can help, I would certainly do that. It will be dependent on both of these gentlemen (Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Imran Khan)," Trump had said in response to a question on whether he will offer to mediate on the issue of Kashmir.

"One without the other does not work, if you want to do the mediation or if you want to do the arbitration. But I would certainly want to help if both India and Pakistan would want to do that. It's a complex issue, but if both want it, I would be willing to do that," he had added.

A similar statement was made by the US President in the presence of Khan at a joint press conference during the latter's visit to Washington in July.

Tensions between India and Pakistan soared following New Delhi's decisions to abrogate Article 370 which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcated the region into two Union Territories (UTs).

'I'll do whatever I can': Trump again offers to mediate over Kashmir between India, Pakistan

India on Wednesday reiterated that its stance on Pakistan's efforts to combat terrorism has not changed and urged Islamabad to take concrete steps to tackle the menace.

"Our position on how the matter has to be addressed has been answered in the past and there is no change in that position." MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar told reporters at a special media briefing.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday that India is not shying away from talks with Pakistan. He said that for India to initiate dialogue with Pakistan the latter country has to make efforts to combat terrorism.

Modi made the statement during the bilateral meeting with US President Donald Trump."The Prime Minister made it clear (to Trump) that we are not shying away from talks with Pakistan, but we expect certain concrete steps to be taken by Pakistan before that, and we don't find any efforts by them," Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale had told reporters at a briefing after the bilateral meeting between the two leaders.

India raised the challenges it has been facing with regard to terror especially in Jammu and Kashmir for the last 30 years, Gokhale said.

New Delhi has repeatedly maintained that dialogue with Pakistan will not be initiated until it takes concrete action against terror emanating from its soil.

Kumar also reiterated India's stand on Kashmir issue that it is a bilateral matter between India and Pakistan and there is no scope for third-party mediation.

"Even yesterday, he (Trump) said that India and Pakistan should both agree for any kind of mediation. Our position is very clear, it has been articulated by the Prime Minister (Modi) earlier. That position remains," he said.

Tensions between India and Pakistan soared following New Delhi`s decisions to abrogate Article 370 which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir. Pakistan has downgraded its diplomatic ties and suspended bilateral trade with India in the aftermath of the move.

India has maintained that its constitutional decisions on Kashmir are its internal matter a stance that has been supported by many countries around the world.

India on Wednesday reiterated that its stance on Pakistan's efforts to combat terrorism has not changed and urged Islamabad to take concrete steps to tackle the menace.

WION: How do you see India-Maldives ties?

Abdulla Shahid: The relationship between our countries have never been better. There is mutual respect. There is an understanding between our governments and leadership. There is a partnership, irrespective of the size of the countries, irrespective of the size of the populations, there are common goals. Common goals of security and development. Here, in New York when the President and the Prime Minister met, the meeting was cordial and they are meeting for the fourth time within a span of 11 months. Shows how strong the partnership is.

WION: India plans to train your cricket team, how will it help people-to-people ties?

Abdulla Shahid: We have a growing relationship and people are in love with cricket. Your cricket team is the best in the world. Some of the best cricketers and some of the best cricket training opportunities. We have seen how India has assisted Afghanistan to come on to the world stage. It is our hope, with the training opportunities which are given to the Maldivian players, we will be able to follow the same path and one day may come out and beat your team.

WION: Does your country back New Delhi on Kashmir?

Abdulla Shahid: We have a principled foreign policy. We do not look at the issues at hand but principles on which things are decided and we strongly feel that each and every country has the right to decide on its constitution and the constitutional changes India brought about are not for other countries to decide and we respect that.

WION: Does connectivity remain the big focus?

Abdulla Shahid: Currently we have 5 Indian cities connected to Male. I hope there will be more air connectivity. Indian tourist arrivals have jumped, they have come to be number 3 in arrivals. There has been a 100 per cent increase in Indian tourist arrivals. During PM Modi's visit, we signed an MoU by sea connectivity. The Ambassador has informed that within the next 2 months, the Cochin Kulhudhuffushi Male ferry will begin.

WION: How big is climate change an issue for you?

Abdulla Shahid: Climate change is a very big issue for us because climate change and degradation of the environment is an existential issue. It a threat to the country and the Maldives is one of the low-lying island states in the world. If there is a rise in sea level by 3-4 meters we are finished. We can't let it happen. We still trust humanity. We still believe countries will come together and save the planet. We are happy that India is leading on climate change issues on many fronts. One of them is solar alliance which Indian Prime Minister Modi has initiated and we are part of it.

WION: The key focus for your country at this year's UNGA?

Abdulla Shahid: We want to consolidate democracy in the Maldives. President Solih, in his speech at UNGA, highlighted where we have come from and how far we have come. We have come from a total dictatorship, from a government which totally ignored human rights and abused power. We want to establish the Maldives where democracy is consolidated and human rights are respected. President Donald Trump and Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan met on the sidelines of United Nations General Assembly in which the US president made it clear any mediation will require approval from both sides.

US President Donald Trump said: "I have a very good relationship with Prime minister Modi, I have very good relations with Prime Minister Khan. And if at any point they say they can iron out, I will be the extremely good arbitrator. I have never failed as an arbitrator...but you want accent from the other side."

"If I can help, I will certainly do that," he said, adding, "but it will be dependent on both of these gentlemen. One without the other doesn't work, if going to do mediation, if you do arbitration."

"Certainly I can help, if both India and Pakistan wanted me to do that. I am ready and willing. It is a complex issue and going for a long time. But if both wanted, I would be ready to do it," the US president added.

Trump hoped that "India and Pakistan can come together and do something smart and good for both, there is always a solution."

India has made it clear that when it comes to India and Pakistan ties, no third party mediation is required which has been stated under the Shimla and Lahore agreements.

Mediation only if both India, Pakistan agree: Trump after meeting PM Imran Khan

Yesterday we saw Donald Trump and Imran Khan meet and today we are looking forward towards the meeting of Indian Prime Minister and the US President. Kashmir of course comes up in discussions and Donald Trump keeps on saying that 'i will mediate only if both sides want it'. Why these repeated U-turns in back and forth on the part of Washington when India has repeatedly clarified that Kashmir is bilateral issue and no third party help is needed?

With just one week left for the United Nations Human Rights Council to get over, India has been able to thwart Pakistan's attempts to rake up the Kashmir issue at the Geneva-based body.

The 42nd session of the Human Rights Council is underway in Geneva where the headquarters of UNHRC is located from September 9 to 27.

Behind India’s victory was the work of 9 Indian diplomats who were able to make sure Pakistan's attempts to raise Kashmir fall flat at the UN institution.

The 9-member team was led by secretary east Vijay Thakur Singh who was entrusted by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to chalk out the detailed strategy.

Some of the key members were India’s envoy to Pakistan Ajay Bisaria, India’s permanent representative to UN, Rajiv Chander; Deputy Permanent Representative to UN, Puneet Aggarwal; first secretary in India’s Permanent Mission in Geneva, Vimarsh Aryan; Animesh Choudhury, first secretary covering economic matters in the sphere of human rights; Mini Devi; Gloria Gangte and Alok Ranjan Jha.

Bisaria, who was sent back by Pakistan after the decision by New Delhi to revoke special status for Jammu and Kashmir, camped in Geneva and reached out to UNHRC members. Ajay Bisaria, who was the private secretary to former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, met UN Human Rights Commissioner Michelle Bachelet on Friday and briefed about New Delhi’s rationale on revoking Article 370. The fact that Bisaria was sent as part of the team is considered a masterstroke by EAM Jaishankar.

Vimarsh Aryan, who slammed Pakistan's foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, hails from Jammu and Kashmir and is the only Indian diplomat who has served there for 3 years. The fact that the MEA chose a diplomat who from J&K to reply to Pak's foreign minister is a message in itself which will be noticed across the world, especially in Islamabad. His right of reply went viral, and on the day of the reply, he became one of the Twitter trends in India. Vimarsh had, in the past, served as the private secretary to former minister of state in the Ministry of External Affairs General VK Singh. Vimarsh, who speaks Arabic fluently, reached out to Arab diplomats.

Animesh has reached out to several countries in the neighbourhood and Latin America. Because of his fluency in Spanish, his outreach to the Latin American countries was significant and effective. Given his experience in handling high-pressure assignments, as private secretary to former Minister of State for External Affairs, he was roped in to deal with the important assignment.

MEA had deputed Gloria Gangte and Alok Ranjan Jha from New Delhi specially for the human rights session. They were chosen since they had previous experience in the field of human rights. Both officers had previously served in the Indian Mission in Geneva. Mini Devi, first secretary in India’s permanent mission in Geneva, covers Human Rights and was actively involved in the entire exercise.

Islamabad could not muster any support to bring a resolution on Kashmir - something the country was aiming for and failed despite claiming to have the support of 50 countries. The list of 50 countries backing Pakistan was never released by Islamabad.

Meet 9 Indian diplomats behind India's masterstroke at UNHRC, Geneva

The Indian government's move to revoke Article 370 that accorded special status to Jammu and Kashmir has a "national security connotation", External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Friday, while emphasising that the country "lives in a tough neighbourhood" and faces more than its fair share of national security challenges.

Addressing the Finnish Institute of International Affairs (FIIA), the minister, in an apparent reference to Pakistan, said that the most prominent national security challenge that India has been subjected to for many decades is the "cross border terrorism", which has cost more than 40,000 lives in the past 30 decades.

"We are opposed to terrorism in all its forms and manifestations and believe there is no justification for it, whatsoever. But it is not just enough to have a position. When subjected to terrorist attacks, any polity that is sincerely committed to the welfare of its people will surely respond," Jaishankar said.

"And indeed, that is precisely what we have done in recent years. Even the changes that were approved last month by the Indian Parliament with respect to Jammu and Kashmir, while driven by the needs of governance and development, and have a national security connotation," Jaishankar added.

Referring to Pakistan, Jaishankar said that the epicentre of terrorism is "right in our neighbourhood. But even as we take our responsive measures, our belief is that this is not just a concern for one country but for the entire international community."

Article 370 abrogation in Kashmir has 'national security connotation': External Affairs Minister Jaishankar

Massive protests are expected in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) on Saturday.

The New York Times on September 19 had reported that the residents "have called for a massive protest on border with India on Saturday and in early October that is expected to be the biggest demonstrations yet."

The report had highlighted that the call for independence within PoK has been growing. It said that pro-independence movements are now attracting thousands of protesters. These protests were barely covered in Pakistani media and mobile phone and internet were cut off for a while in the area. One military general dismissed the demonstrators as "Indian agents."

This comes ahead of the scheduled UNGA session where both the Indian and Pakistani Prime Ministers are scheduled to speak.

This also comes in the wake of India decision to do away with Article 370 of the Constitution which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

Even as Pakistan continues to make attempts to internationalise the Kashmir issue despite rebuffs, it has put curbs on residents of PoK who want an end to its control over the territory.

Pakistan's message to the residents in PoK has been very clear: No talk of independence will be allowed, The New York Times reported on Thursday.

A few NYT journalists who were granted rare access to the region in recent days found a toughening Pakistani security response to a growing pro-independence movement there.

Residents were quoted as saying that Pakistan's domination over the occupied territories has increased over the years especially after the scope of dialogue between the two countries came down.

Quoting the locals of the area, the NYT reported that the Pakistani crackdown also has another focus.

As outrage over India's move to end Kashmir's previously accorded (temporary) constitutional status has galvanised militants, Pakistani officials fear they could face international sanctions if they don't rein in the armed groups.

On August 5, the Government of India had announced the decision to abrogate Article 370 of the constitution which gave special status to Jammu Kashmir.

Pakistan and its leaders have since then resorted to cheap rhetoric against India with many threatening of war. It also downgraded its diplomatic relations with India.

India on its part has maintained that the issue is strictly internal to India.

Massive protests are expected in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) on Saturday. The New York Times on September 19 had reported that the residents "have called for a massive protest on border with India on Saturday and in early October that is expected to be the biggest demonstrations yet.

Massive protests are expected in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) on Saturday. The New York Times on September 19 had reported that the residents "have called for a massive protest on border with India on Saturday and in early October that is expected to be the biggest demonstrations yet." The report had highlighted that the call for independence within PoK has been growing. It said that pro-independence movements are now attracting thousands of protesters. These protests were barely covered in Pakistani media and mobile phone and internet were cut off for a while in the area. One military general dismissed the demonstrators as "Indian agents." This comes ahead of the scheduled UNGA session where both the Indian and Pakistani Prime Ministers are scheduled to speak. Massive protest expected in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir: Report

There's been another setback for Pakistan at UNHRC. Pakistan got no support for Kashmir resolution again.

Another setback for Pakistan at UNHRC, no support for Kashmir resolution

Pakistan on Thursday failed to muster any support to table a resolution on Kashmir at the Human Rights Council in Geneva. Thursday was the last day to bring any resolution at the UNHRC.

Islamabad claimed support of over 50 countries in a joint statement delivered on their behalf last week. The names of countries were never released by Pakistan.

Meanwhile, India raised the issue of human rights violations by Pakistan in Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir.

Mini Devi Kumam, first secretary at India's permanent mission to UNHRC in Geneva said, "Our decision in J&K is within our sovereign right and it is an internal matter of India. None of Pakistan's attempts to misrepresent our decision under different agendas will work".

The 42nd session of the Human Rights Council is underway in Geneva where the headquarters of UNHRC is located from September 9 to 27.

India, last week, had said it is quite confident at the United Nations Human Rights Council to thwart any attempts by Pakistan to raise the Kashmir issue.

Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said, "we are quite confident that the members of UNHRC are aware of our position on Article 370 and the steps we have taken in J&K to ensure normalcy".

Calling Pakistan's situation quite desperate, the MEA spokesperson said, "In case of doublespeak, its quite audacious on Pakistan that the country, which is harbouring terrorists, which is the epicentre of terrorism, is pretending to speak on behalf of the global community on human rights, this is very rich. Their record of persecution of minorities - ethnic and religious - I don't think needs explaining".

"Repeating a lie, 4-5 times doesn't turn out to be gospel truth that came out very clearly at UNHRC," he added.

Last week, India and Pakistan clashed at the UN institution as New Delhi slammed Islamabad for raking the Kashmir issue.
