DMK president and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Saturday (August 1, 2026) questioned Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay over whether he intended to call an all-party meeting to address the Cauvery water dispute. Pointing to ongoing developments in Karnataka over the dispute, MK Stalin noted that the neighbouring State had demonstrated political unity on the matter. “The Karnataka Chief Minister initially invited Vijay for talks but has now asked him not to visit and instead convened an all-party meeting on August 2. This shows that all political parties in Karnataka are united on the Cauvery issue,” he said in a post on X. Referring back to his earlier advice that negotiations with Karnataka wouldn't benefit Tamil Nadu, Stalin said this was precisely why he had cautioned the Chief Minister against visiting the neighbouring state. “A legal battle is the only way to deal with a State that has consistently denied Tamil Nadu its rightful share of Cauvery water. Karnataka treats Tamil Nadu as a destination only for surplus water. But Vijay appears to have believed that he could secure water by holding talks,” he added. MK Stalin stated that Karnataka had requested Vijay not to visit after the Cauvery Water Management Authority directed the State to release water to Tamil Nadu. “We anticipated these developments and therefore urged the Chief Minister to convene an all-party meeting. Will he do so now?” Stalin asked. Also read: 'Only in reel or...': CJP's Abhijeet Dipke reacts to PM Modi's video pardoning protesters who 'abused' him
DK Shivakumar postpones meeting with Tamil Nadu CM Vijay
On Thursday, Karnataka CM DK Shivakumar announced to postpone his meeting with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, stating that the atmosphere was not conducive after the recent developments in the Cauvery water dispute. Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Shivakumar said the Karnataka government would first seek input from legal experts and consult opposition parties before finalising its next move. "We have been requesting the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu that we should meet at a cordial time. Let these court issues be over. We have to respect the law of this country. In a surprising development, the Joseph Vijay-led Tamil Nadu government has decided to drop the proposed greenfield airport project, which was set to be established at Parandur near Chennai, citing that the acquired land is unsuitable for runway construction because of the presence of extensive water bodies. He highlighted that the state will instead look for an alternative site to develop Chennai's second airport. Meanwhile, Karnataka is also planning its major second international airport in South Bengaluru to ease congestion at the existing Kempegowda International Airport and to support regional growth. The government is considering locations along the Kanakapura Road belt, targeting the area for a sprawling 9,000-acre mega-project. So, from the ongoing development, we will determine the differences between the project and how the respective government is acting to process the project that will pave the way to support the infrastructure growth, providing air connectivity.
Parandur Airport Project
The greenfield airport project, spreading 4,970 acres, has faced sustained protests since it was announced in 2022. Farmers and environmental groups have opposed the project, citing concerns over large-scale displacement and the loss of ecologically sensitive wetlands. Industries Minister Nirmal Kumar said the government decided after finding that a considerable portion of the identified land was not suitable for developing airport infrastructure. The development puts Chief Minister Vijay in a delicate position between honouring his promise to villagers opposing the project and addressing the growing need for increased aviation infrastructure in Chennai to sustain economic growth and future investments. The Parandur airport project, advanced by the previous DMK government, had consistently experienced sustained opposition from locals of Ekanapuram and other neighbouring villages over concerns connected to land acquisition, displacement and environmental impact. He noted that another criterion was to opt for those areas where the land prices are not too high, and the government would not encounter a huge burden on account of compensation. In response, a high-level team from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) inspected four sites, including Choodahalli and Somanahalli on Kanakapura Road, the Nelamangala-Kunigal Road in April 2025 and Harohalli, which is under construction. The Karnataka government has postponed a final decision on the location of the proposed airport and will wait for a detailed technical feasibility report before sending its proposal to the Airports Authority of India (AAI). Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar said the site would be chosen after evaluating technical viability, social impact and land acquisition costs. The state has engaged a Singapore-based consultancy to undertake the technical assessment, while KPMG has been tasked with preparing the financial analysis. The proposed airport is expected to require about 3,500 acres of land. Shivakumar also directed officials to keep land acquisition costs in check and minimise displacement of local residents.

In response, Nirmal Kumar stated that the state government will look for an alternative option in and around Chennai for the proposed airport, while emphasising that environmental considerations would take precedence in the decision-making process. The decision has also left residents uncertain about the fate of land already acquired by the state-owned Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) under the previous government. With the Parandur airport project now shelved, concerns remain over how the acquired land will be utilised and whether affected landowners will receive compensation, relief or any form of restoration.

Industries Minister Nirmal Kumar said the government decided after finding that a considerable portion of the identified land was not suitable for developing airport infrastructure.

The Joseph Vijay-led Tamil Nadu government has decided to drop the proposed greenfield airport project at Parandur near Chennai, stating that much of the acquired land is unsuitable for runway construction because of the presence of extensive water bodies. He highlighted that the state will instead look for an alternative site to develop Chennai's second airport. The proposed airport, spread across 4,970 acres, has faced sustained protests since it was announced in 2022. "Around 800 to 900 acres consisted of water bodies. The land was not suitable for runway construction as it was more like a water body," the minister said. Also read: Who is Gurinderjit Singh Nagra? In a surprising turn of Tamil Nadu politics, more than two-thirds of AIADMK MLAs assemble at Rajya Sabha leader CV Shanmugam’s office in Chennai to extend support to Thalapathy Vijay, indicating a rift in the party. These two-thirds MLAs consist of nearly 35 members who reached the AIADMK leader’s office in Chennai. Reportedly, these MLAs have urged AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami to consider an alliance with TVK, which fell short of a majority by 10 seats. AIADMK spokesperson Kovai Sathyan stated that the party’s leadership will decide on any tie-up with TVK and dismissed speculation of an internal split. “TVK has not invited any party. If they want stability, they should take a call. There is some momentum. We will wait and see," he said. Meanwhile, Vijay is expected to be sworn in as the chief minister of Tamil Nadu at Chennai’s Nehru Stadium. The election result marked a major political shift in Tamil Nadu, with neither of the two parties rooted in Dravidian politics emerging as the single largest party. In its debut, TVK won 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly, while the AIADMK secured 47 seats.
TVK receives support from Congress
AIADMK had contested 169 constituencies as part of the NDA alliance. The ruling DMK was decimated to just 59 seats, with the remaining seats being grabbed by smaller parties like Congress and the Left. Meanwhile, the TVK, which already received support from five Congress MLAs, has now also approached the CPI, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), and some other parties to gain more seats. After the Assembly election results, Palaniswami stated that he accepts the verdict of the people in Tamil Nadu. In a statement, he said, “I express my gratitude to all the people who rose and performed their democratic duty in the assembly elections". Stating that the people were judges here, he said, “Therefore, I wholeheartedly accept the decision given by the people". He added, “We will soon recover from this setback."
