When she came here from India at the age of 19, she could not have imagined this moment. But she believed so deeply in America, where a moment like this is possible. And so I'm thinking about her, and about the generations of women, Black women, Native American women who have paved the way for this moment tonight," she said. Harris vowed to honour her position, adding she would be for Biden what he was for former president Barack Obama. "And to the American people. No matter who you voted for. I will strive to be a vice president, like Joe was to President Obama: loyal, honest, and prepared waking up every day thinking of you and your family. Because now is when the real work begins, the hard work, the necessary work, the good work, the essential work to save lives and beat this epidemic to rebuild our economy," she said. President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris were joined on stage following their speeches by their families. Biden was seen hugging his family as fireworks exploded overhead. A series of drones also flew overhead and made the shape of the US and "BIDEN."

Slated to be first woman US vice-president, Harris vows 'will not be the last'

U.S. relations with China are the worst since the countries normalized ties four decades ago. America’s allies in Europe are alienated. The most important nuclear anti-proliferation treaty is about to expire with Russia. Iran is amassing enriched nuclear fuel again, and North Korea is brandishing its atomic arsenal.

Not to mention global warming, refugee crises and looming famines in some of the poorest places on earth, all amplified by the pandemic.

President-elect Joe Biden is inheriting a landscape of challenges and ill will toward the United States in countries hostile to President Donald Trump’s “America First” mantra, his unpredictability, embrace of autocratic leaders and resistance to international cooperation. Biden also could face difficulties in dealing with governments that had hoped for Trump’s reelection — particularly Israel and Saudi Arabia, which share the president’s deep antipathy toward Iran.

But Biden’s past as head of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and as vice president in the Obama administration has given him a familiarity with international affairs that could work to his advantage, foreign policy experts who know him say.

“President Trump has lowered the bar so much that it wouldn’t take much for Biden to change the perception dramatically,” said Robert Malley, chief executive of the International Crisis Group and a former adviser in the Obama White House. “Saying a few of the things Trump hasn’t said — to rewind the tape on multilateralism, climate change, human rights — will sound very loud and significant.”

Here are the most pressing foreign policy areas the Biden administration will face:

The Challenge of U.S.-China Relations

Nothing is more urgent, in the eyes of many experts, than reversing the downward trajectory of relations with China, the economic superpower and geopolitical rival that Trump has engaged in what many are calling a new Cold War. Disputes over trade, the South China Sea, Hong Kong, Taiwan and technology have metastasized during Trump’s term, his critics say, worsened by the president’s racist declarations that China infected the world with the coronavirus and should be held accountable.

“China is kind of the radioactive core of America’s foreign policy issues,” said Orville Schell, director of the Asia Society’s Center on U.S.-China Relations.

Biden has not necessarily helped himself with his own negative depiction of China and its authoritarian leader, President Xi Jinping, during the 2020 campaign. The two were once seen as having developed a friendly relationship during the Obama years. But Biden, perhaps acting partly to counter Trump’s accusations that he would be lenient toward China, has recently called Xi a “thug.”

The Middle East: Shifts on Israel, Saudi Arabia and Iran?

Biden has vowed to reverse what he called the “dangerous failure” of Trump’s Iran policy, which repudiated the 2015 nuclear agreement and replaced it with tightening sanctions that have caused deep economic damage in Iran and left the United States largely isolated on this issue. Biden has offered to rejoin the agreement, which constricts Iran’s nuclear capabilities if Iran adheres to its provisions and commits to further negotiations. He also has pledged to immediately nullify Trump’s travel ban affecting Iran and several other Muslim-majority countries.

Whether Iran’s hierarchy will accept Biden’s approach is unclear. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, has said the United States is untrustworthy regardless who is in the White House. At the same time, “Iran is desperate for a deal,” said Cliff Kupchan, chair of the Eurasia Group, a political risk consultancy.

Still, Kupchan said, Biden will face enormous difficulties in any negotiations with Iran aimed at strengthening restrictions on its nuclear activities — weaknesses Trump had cited to justify renouncing the nuclear agreement.

“The substance will be tough; we’ve seen this movie, and it’s not easy,” Kupchan said. “I think Biden’s challenge is that it will not end up blowing up in his face.”

Biden’s Iran policy could alienate Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel, who leveraged Trump’s confrontational approach to help strengthen Israel’s relations with Gulf Arab countries, punctuated by normalization of diplomatic ties with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. How Biden manages relations with Saudi Arabia, which considers Iran an enemy, will also be a challenge.

“There’s a very hard square to circle here,” Kupchan said.

Trump’s extremely favorable treatment of Israel in the protracted conflict with the Palestinians also could prove nettlesome as Biden navigates a different path in the Middle East. He has criticized Israeli settlement construction in occupied lands the Palestinians want for a future state. And he is likely to restore contacts with the Palestinian leadership.

“Benjamin Netanyahu can expect an uncomfortable period of adjustment,” an Israeli columnist, Yossi Verter, wrote Friday in the Haaretz newspaper.

At the same time, Biden also has a history of cordial relations with Netanyahu. Biden has said he would not reverse Trump’s transfer of the U.S. Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv — a relocation that deeply angered the Palestinians.

Repairing Relations With Europe and Navigating Brexit

While Trump often disparaged the European Union and strongly encouraged Britain’s exit from the bloc, Biden has expressed the opposite position. Like former President Barack Obama, he supported close U.S. relations with bloc leaders and opposed Brexit.

Biden’s ascendance could prove especially awkward for Prime Minister Boris Johnson of Britain, who had embraced Trump and had been counting on achieving a trade deal with the United States before his country’s divorce from the bloc takes full effect. Biden may be in no hurry to complete such an agreement.

While many Europeans will be happy to see Trump go, the damage they say he has done to America’s reliability will not be easily erased.

“We had differences, but there was never a basic mistrust about having common views of the world,” Gro Harlem Brundtland, the former prime minister of Norway, told The New York Times last month. Over the past four years, she said, European leaders had learned they could “no longer take for granted that they can trust the U.S., even on basic things.”

Confronting North Korea’s Nuclear Threat

Trump has described his friendship and three meetings with Kim Jong Un, the North Korean leader, as a success that averted war with the nuclear-armed hermetic country. But critics say Trump’s approach not only failed to persuade Kim to relinquish his arsenal of nuclear weapons and missiles, it bought Kim time to strengthen them. Last month the North unveiled what appeared to be its largest-ever intercontinental ballistic missile.

“On Trump’s watch, the North’s nuclear weapons program has grown apace, its missile capabilities have expanded, and Pyongyang can now target the United States with an ICBM,” said Evans J.R. Revere, a former State Department official and expert on North Korea. “That is the legacy that Trump will soon pass on to Biden, and it will be an enormous burden.”

Biden, who has been described by North Korea’s official news agency as a rabid dog that “must be beaten to death with a stick,” has criticized Trump’s approach as appeasement of a dictator. Biden has said he would press for denuclearization and “stand with South Korea” but has not specified how he would deal with North Korean belligerence.

A Likely Tougher Approach to Russia and Putin

Biden has long asserted that he would take a much harder line with Russia than Trump, who questioned NATO’s usefulness, doubted intelligence warnings on Russia’s interference in U.S. elections, admired President Vladimir Putin and said that improving U.S. relations with the Kremlin would benefit all. Biden, who as vice president pushed for sanctions against Russia over its annexation of Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula in 2014 — the biggest illegal land seizure in Europe since World War II — might seek to extend those sanctions and take other punitive steps.

While tensions with Russia would likely rise, arms control is one area where Biden and Putin share a desire for progress. Biden is set to be sworn in just a few weeks before the scheduled expiration of the 2010 New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty. He has said he wants to negotiate an extension of the treaty without preconditions.

A Return to the Paris Agreement and International Commitments

Biden has said one of his first acts as president will be to rejoin the Paris Climate accord to limit global warming, which the United States officially left under Trump on Wednesday. Biden also has said he would restore U.S. membership in the World Health Organization, which Trump repudiated in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, describing the WHO as a lackey of China.

More broadly, Biden is expected to reverse many of the isolationist and anti-immigrant steps taken during the Trump administration, which are widely seen by Trump’s critics as shameful stains on America's standing in the world. Biden has said he would disband Trump’s immigration restrictions, stop construction of his border wall with Mexico, expand resources for immigrants and provide a path to citizenship for people living in the United States illegally.

Nonetheless, many of Trump’s policies had considerable support in the United States, and it remains to be seen how quickly or effectively Biden can change them. The convulsions that roiled American democracy and the divisive election have also sown doubts about Biden’s ability to deliver on his pledges.

“There is relief at a return to some kind of normalcy, but at the same time, history cannot be erased,” said Jean-Marie Guehenno, a French diplomat who is a fellow at the Brookings Institution’s Foreign Policy Program and a former undersecretary general for peacekeeping operations at the United Nations. “The kind of soft power that the United States has enjoyed in the past has largely evaporated.”

US Election 2020: 'It's not over': Trump supporters protest Biden victory in Pennsylvania and Michigan

Minutes after US media declared Democrat Joe Biden victor in the tight race for the US presidency on Saturday, President Donald Trump rejected that conclusion, saying he will prove in court that he was the winner.

"The simple fact is this election is far from over," Trump said in a statement.

"Legal votes decide who is president, not the news media."

But experts say Trump has little chance of reversing Biden's win, without having provided the evidence of widespread vote fraud needed to overturn results in several states.

"Trump's litigation strategy is going nowhere. It is not going to make a difference to the election outcome," said Richard Hasen, an election law expert at the University of California, Irvine.

"Networks don't get to decide elections. Courts do. Courts set aside elections when they are illegal," Trump's lawyer Rudy Giuliani declared Saturday in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania's largest city.

- Echoes of Florida? -

Trump is right: the election is not truly over until each state formally certifies its vote, which will take place over the coming weeks.

But with nearly all the 150 million-plus ballots counted, he simply does not have enough votes in the Electoral College that formally chooses the president, US media collectively concluded Saturday.

There is a precedent for a turn to the courts. In 2000, with the election battle between Republican George W. Bush and Democrat Al Gore hinging on the outcome in Florida -- where Bush led with just over 500 votes -- the two sides fought to the Supreme Court over a state-wide recount.

The high court narrowly rejected a recount, handing the election to Bush.

In Trump's case, he not only has to overcome a deficit of nearly 40,000 votes in Pennsylvania, but he is also down by many thousands of votes each in Nevada, Georgia, Arizona and Wisconsin.

It's highly unlikely the Supreme Court would move to overturn election results of those margins in multiple states.

- Recounting the vote -

Recounts are expected in Wisconsin and Georgia, and are possible in other states.

But recounts rarely reverse verdicts. A recount in Wisconsin in 2016 netted 131 votes to Trump's lead over Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.

"In modern American elections, recounting almost never changed results by more than a couple hundred votes," said Steven Huefner, an election law expert at Ohio State University.

The Trump campaign's biggest hope has been to overturn a Pennsylvania decision months ago to accept mailed ballots received up to three days after Election Day.

Republicans appealed the decision to the Supreme Court in October, which split four-four leaving it in place, but saying it could revisit the issue after the election.

Now it has a full bank of nine justices after Trump appointed conservative Amy Coney Barrett, and Republicans are seeking a new hearing.

But Pennsylvania officials say the number of late ballots at risk of being disqualified is only in the thousands, much fewer than needed to overcome Biden's lead.

It is "difficult to see how the ballots in question will have any relevance to the electoral outcome," said Pennsylvania Secretary of State Kathy Boockvar in a Supreme Court filing Saturday.

- Fraud? -

Trump is also claiming fraud. Again, to overcome Biden's lead that would have to be proved in multiple states and cancel tens of thousands of votes for his rival.

So far they have not delivered the evidence.

Giuliani said Saturday that the largely Democratic-leaning city of Philadelphia "has a sad history of voter fraud," claiming dead people submitted ballots.

"There certainly is enough evidence to disqualify a certain number of ballots," he said. "And that could affect the election."

But the Republican claims remain "vague," said Huefner.

"You have to have facts to support what you are claiming," he said.

Minutes after US media declared Democrat Joe Biden victor in the tight race for the US presidency on Saturday, President Donald Trump rejected that conclusion, saying he will prove in court that he was the winner. "The simple fact is this election is far from over," Trump said in a statement. "Legal votes decide who is president, not the news media." But experts say Trump has little chance of reversing Biden's win, without having provided the evidence of widespread vote fraud needed to overturn results in several states. "Trump's litigation strategy is going nowhere. It is not going to make a difference to the election outcome," said Richard Hasen, an election law expert at the University of California, Irvine.
During his first year of presidency, Joe Biden plans to bring together the democracies of the world by hosting a global Summit for Democracy to "renew the spirit and shared purpose" of the nations of the Free World, according to a policy paper issued by his campaign during the US presidential election.

India, being the world's largest democracy, is likely to play an important role in such a summit.

Biden defeated incumbent President Donald Trump in the bitterly-fought presidential election that attracted a record number of Americans to cast their votes.

"During his first year in office, President Biden will bring together the world''s democracies to strengthen our democratic institutions, honestly confront the challenge of nations that are backsliding, and forge a common agenda to address threats to our common values," according to the policy document issued by his campaign.

"President Biden will organise and host a global Summit for Democracy to renew the spirit and shared purpose of the nations of the Free World," it said.

The Summit will prioritise results by galvanising significant new country commitments in three areas: (1) fighting corruption; (2) defending against authoritarianism, including election security; (3) advancing human rights in their own nations and abroad, it said.

The proposed Summit will include civil society organisations from around the world that stand on the frontlines in defense of our democracies. Details of the summit would be worked after early next year, it said.

It will also issue a Call to Action for the private sector, including technology corporations and social media giants, to make their own commitments, recognising their responsibilities and their overwhelming interest in preserving open, democratic societies and protecting free speech, the Biden Campaign said.

"For example, technology companies-which benefit from the fruits of democracy- should make concrete pledges for how they can ensure their algorithms and platforms are not empowering the surveillance state, facilitating repression in China and elsewhere, spreading hate, spurring people to violence, and remaining susceptible to misuse," said the policy document.

As an example of the concrete action our world needs, Joe Biden served as a founding member of a Trans-Atlantic Commission on Election Integrity-to fight back against Russia's attacks on Western democracies, the policy document pointed out.

The Commission asked politicians across Europe to sign a pledge committing to transparency in campaign finance and to reject the use of fabricated or hacked material.

"Now that he is a candidate for office, Biden has signed that pledge and is calling on every person running for president to do the same," it said.

Before hosting the global summit for Democracy, the Biden Administration plans to take a host of steps to strengthen democracy in the country.

Prominent among them include reforming the criminal justice system to eliminate inequitable disparities; restore the Voting Rights Act; and seek greater transparency in the campaign finance system so money, foreign and domestic, won't pollute politics.

The Biden administration also plans to immediately end the horrific practice of separating families at the border and holding immigrant children in for-profit prisons.

"Abandoning our deepest-held values does nothing to increase security at our border-and everything to diminish our standing in the world. At the same time, as president, Biden will establish sensible policies that improve screening procedures at our legal ports of entry and make smart investments in border technology, in cooperation with Canada and Mexico," it said.

"Terminate the travel ban against people from Muslim-majority countries. Reverse Trump's detrimental asylum policies and raise our target for refugee admissions to a level commensurate with our responsibility and unprecedented global need," the policy document said.

The Biden Administration also plans to restore a commitment to science and truth in government, including bringing back the words "climate change"; and return the phrase "nation of immigrants" to the mission statement of its Citizenship and Immigration Services.

"Revitalise our national commitment to advancing human rights and democracy around the world," said the policy document.

Joe Biden: Our battle against the virus, racism | US Election 2020

Joe Biden's election as US president has sparked a scramble for champagne in the capital Washington, while other big cities in the country erupted into celebrations that saw no end at least until midnight.

From New York to Miami in the East and Denver and Austin out West, Biden supporters flooded into the streets after media networks projected him as the winner.

Some stores in Washington were already close to running out of stock in the Democratic stronghold. Calvert and Woodley, known for its selection of wines from around the world, sold up to 75 percent more bottles than a usual Saturday, according to store employees.

Hundreds of bottles had been sold.

A few customers were dressed in Biden-Harris t-shirts and with a Biden-Harris sign on the hand.

At Magruder's, a wine shop in the residential district of Chevy Chase in business since 1845, the shelves were emptied quickly and employees had to fetch reserve cases of champagne.

And they were obviously not concerned with the price. Bottles of champagne typically sell for around $40 dollars (33 euros) to start.

The packed crowd outside the White House later sung "YMCA," the song Trump used to close out his rallies down the homestretch of the campaign.

Trump, however, was not at the White House on Saturday morning -- he was at his golfing at his club in Virginia .

In Philadelphia, which was key to Biden's decisive Pennsylvania win, cars honked, people waved Biden flags and a large crowd gathered outside of Philadelphia's City Hall.

In New York City, a crowd gathered outside of the Trump International Hotel and Tower, chanting: "No More Trump!" In Chicago, growing crowd gathered to celebrate outside Trump Tower.

A crowd also gathered at Freedom Park in Atlanta.

Outside Biden's headquarters in Wilmington, Delaware, the crowd quickly grew. There were people of all ages cheering, singing and honking their horns, and the crowd joined together to sing "God Bless America."

US cities erupt into celebrations, scramble for champagne after Biden win

WILMINGTON, Mass. — Nick Rocco went into Election Day amped up. A 26-year-old hair stylist, he spent the past few months campaigning for President Donald Trump, taking special satisfaction in offending Biden supporters.

It was still summer when he got kicked off his town’s community Facebook page for his pugnacious pro-Trump posts. When someone stole the Trump sign from his yard, he replaced it with half a dozen new ones, one featuring an expletive.

At his wedding last month, guests sauntered out in oversize Donald and Melania masks, and he savored the discomfort of his wife’s Democratic relatives.

“The thing is, we don’t care,” Rocco said. He is looking forward to many years of Trump presidencies. “I hope Don, Ivanka and Eric all run eventually,” he said last week.

Rocco represents a notable category: young voters drawn into politics for the first time by Trump. He did not go to college and prides himself on his independent thinking; he puts himself in the category of street-smart, not book-smart.

He had never bothered to register to vote until 2016, when he first heard Trump debate on television, and saw a political figure who reminded him of himself.

“He doesn’t speak like a politician, he speaks like I do,” he said. “I can understand what this guy is saying. He’s talking like an American person talks. He’s not talking like a robot.”

He and his wife, Jenna, a 27-year-old nurse, went all in, organizing rallies and standing on roadsides. As the election and vote counting neared an end, daily check-ins with the Roccos found their moods shifting from excitement to foreboding.

Sunday, Nov. 1

The family — Nick, Jenna and their two daughters — spent the afternoon at a rally beside Main Street in Wilmington, where passing motorists responded with honks and obscene gestures. Across the street, at a Trump pop-up store, a T-shirt cheerfully boasted, “I’m a deplorable.”

The abuse did not bother Nick Rocco; it seemed to energize him. (“I like to be the center of attention,” he explained.) When a distraught woman with a curly ponytail flipped him off through her window, he bounded to the curb and danced a jig, cheerfully shouting obscenities back.

The Roccos had not paid much attention to the polls because they were convinced that Trump was going to win. This was based on attendance at rallies, and because of their circle of acquaintances: With the exception of his brother, Nick Rocco said, he had never met anyone who supported Joe Biden.

When Fox News began reporting polls showing Biden in the lead, Jenna Rocco tried tuning into One America News, the right-wing cable network, which predicted a convincing victory for the president. The Roccos got news from a variety of sources — TikTok, QAnon, pro-Trump comedian Terrence K. Williams, YouTube mystic Clif High. “I’m a conspiracy theorist, I guess, if you want to call it that,” Jenna Rocco said.

These sources cheered them up. They held out hope that Trump could win in Massachusetts. Or at least in Wilmington.

Jenna Rocco confessed that she was exhausted with the months of public confrontation. Nick Rocco, she complains, sits on Facebook and argues with strangers for hours.

“I want him to win,” she said of the president. “But I want it to be over.”

She was worried that their in-your-face support for Trump, in a state so hostile to him, would end up hurting their daughters.

“I’m just tired of all the arguing that people are doing,” she said. “I wish sometimes Trump would just say — he doesn’t even have to mean it — that he would be the president for everybody. Just say those words.”

Monday

In the last hours of the campaign, Jenna Rocco’s confidence in Trump’s victory had begun to buckle. Late into the night, when he gave his final speech at a rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan, she was surprised to find herself weeping. “It was sad that it could be his last rally,” she said. “It could be that he could not be president anymore.”

Tuesday

At 7 on election night, the Roccos settled themselves on the sofa to watch the returns. Jenna Rocco was stress-eating Halloween candy, Kit Kats and Smarties.

They had passed the last hours of the campaign on a dark roadside outside a polling station, fingers frozen, waving Trump flags at passing vehicles. Nick Rocco muttered to himself, “Me standing out here is kind of pointless.”

But then he reminded himself what kept him out there all these months: People had disrespected him. The Facebook group manager who had kicked him off. The neighbor who took his yard sign. Teachers who responded to his daughter’s enthusiasm about Trump with awkward silence.

“People who don’t like Trump, I honestly think they are very soft people,” he said. “That is why the world is becoming so sensitive today. Back in the day, you could throw a snowball at someone at school and everything was fine. Nowadays, a letter gets sent home: Your child is being mean.”

Trump, by contrast, “lives the way people used to live.”

Nick Rocco has tried to do the same. His older brother, who he describes as the brainy one, took the other path, winning a scholarship to college. (He is the Biden voter.) But Nick Rocco’s aspirations were staunchly blue-collar; he chose trade school and went to work at 17.

When he won $1 million in the lottery in 2018 — his scratch-ticket hobby cost him $200 to $300 a day at its peak — he channeled his winnings, a lump sum of $650,000, into low-cost multifamily rental properties that he hopes will allow him to retire at 40.

The job market, he feels, has justified his choices, leaving many college graduates twisting in the wind.

“A plumber goes to my house, he fixes a clogged toilet, he makes $200,” he said. “The most paying jobs are the people who are fixing things. You’re going to school, and you’re paying $500,000 to go to school, and you might not be able to get a job.”

By 9:30 p.m., Massachusetts was a lost cause, but Trump seemed to have a commanding lead in Florida and Pennsylvania. The Roccos were run down, probably from the hours spent at rallies, and they drifted off around 11 p.m. with a warm, spreading certainty that their candidate was going to win.

It was sweet, and it felt like vindication.

Wednesday

At 2:30 in the morning, Jenna Rocco awoke with a start. When she checked her news feed, she discovered that Biden was leading in several Western states, and Trump’s advantage in states like Wisconsin and Michigan was melting away. Now she could no longer sleep.

“I’m about 100% sure there’s fraud going on,” she said, although there was no evidence of fraud.

When he woke up, Nick Rocco shared her outrage. “Who knows whether these numbers are correct or not?” he asked. “Who are the people counting those votes?”

He wondered whether civil unrest would now break out. Over the summer, watching the Black Lives Matter protests, he had applied for a gun license, but he had been refused: Massachusetts, he grumbled.

When he saw the pro-Trump crowds gathering outside counting locations in Michigan and Arizona, he wished he could join them.

“It’s not ending,” he said. “I would love to see Trump supporters come out and take a stand.”

Thursday

By Thursday morning, the Roccos had given up on Fox. “There’s definitely people at Fox who don’t like Trump,” Nick Rocco said. “The commentators, they are normally aggressive. I think they got a leash put on them somehow, some way.”

He took the position that the vote count should have ended Tuesday. He reassured his wife that the decision would finally lie in the hands of the Supreme Court.

“They’re doing anything they can to stop him from becoming president,” he said. “It’s not over yet. He’s going to win. It’s just a matter of who has the balls to close down first.”

But an alternative path was beginning to take shape in his mind, in case Biden prevailed.

Maybe the Republicans could impeach Biden. Maybe a Republican Senate could tie his hands for four years. Maybe, after a long-planned Caribbean vacation, Rocco would fly out to Arizona and join the protesters. Maybe he would post new yard signs.

“Like I told you, I hate to lose,” he said. “If he loses, I’ll feel like I’ve lost.”

When Trump delivered remarks at the White House, Nick Rocco was struck by his appearance. The president looked drained and serious, no longer a happy warrior. The message the president conveyed was grave: that American democracy is a farce.

“He’s been telling us about that for months, and I think it’s actually happening now,” he said. “How are we ever going to be able to vote for a president again, now that we know that fraud has been going on?”

Friday

The news Friday morning was no surprise. Officials in states that had not been called had spent much of the night meticulously counting ballots, in the presence of observers from both parties.

Biden was a hair’s breadth from the presidency, on course to win at least 270 electoral votes.

“Every time I went to bed, it was the same,” Nick Rocco said. “I go to bed, he was winning, I wake up, he was losing.”

Jenna Rocco sounded resigned. “I think that basically it’s pretty much done,” she said. “But they cheated. But it’s done.”

The people she had spent the summer with, the Trump activists, she could see them packing it in, returning to normal life.

“They’re just going to want to move on,” she said. “My aunt’s already saying, ‘Stop being a crybaby.’”

Nick Rocco was not ready to give up, though. The president would not concede, he was sure of that. “I’d be pissed at him if he did because I would never do that,” he said. “He’s not that type of person. He doesn’t give up easily. I see a lot of myself in him.”

Casting his mind into the future, past this election, he could imagine any number of outcomes.

He could imagine the United States splitting into two countries, one governed by Trump and one not. He could imagine suspending elections so Trump and his family could rule without interruption for 20 years.

“I guarantee you, Trump supporters would not care,” he said. “I guarantee you, if you got 69 million Trump supporters, and you said, ‘Would you be good with Donald Trump and Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump and Ivanka Trump as president?’ a lot of people would be 100% behind that.”

He was gathering his things — he had a shift at the salon — and his tone was calm. He is only 26. There is plenty of time. He was waiting for cues from his leader.

“In Trump we trust, and as far as everything else, it’s all going to fall into place,” he said. “It’s not happening today, and it’s not happening tomorrow.”

For a Trump fan, a week when victory ebbed away

Way back in the days after the 2012 election, the last Republican presidential defeat, all the conventional wisdom in American politics converged on a simple idea: The GOP was doomed as a national institution unless it became, in effect, a moderate party of the business class, stiff-arming social conservatives and wooing Hispanic voters by promising more liberal immigration laws.

Against this consensus, a few observers made dissenting points: First, a lot of working-class white voters who tilted Republican had stayed home amid Mitt Romney’s business-class campaign in 2012, and second, the Hispanic vote was hardly a single-issue-voting, pro-immigration monolith. So it was as easy to imagine Republicans surviving in a changing country by simply becoming more populist on economic issues as it was to imagine them moving in the more libertarian direction favored by the party’s donors and consultants.

After two national elections with Donald Trump at the top of the ticket, those dissenters can claim a lot of vindication. For the second presidential cycle in a row, notwithstanding plague, economic crisis and his own immense faults, Trump was a competitive candidate with a coalition that was more blue-collar and nonwhite than the Republican vote in 2012. Relative to four years ago, he turned out even more whites without college degrees in many states (even as his share of the white working class may have slipped a little bit overall) and increased his support from African Americans and in heavily Hispanic areas — not just in the Cuban parts of Florida, but in regions as different as southern Texas and Lawrence, Massachusetts.

In those trends, you can see the foundation of a possible after-Trump conservative majority that is multiethnic and middle class and populist, an expansive coalition rather than a white and aging rump. And the competitiveness of the existing Trump coalition, the fact that he wasn’t simply routed as the polls had predicted and his party came through the election in better-than-expected shape, makes it less likely that his would-be successors will try to rewind the clock to 2012. Instead, they will promise to reassemble his populist coalition as a first step, rather than trying to rebuild around the now-Democratic-trending mass upper class.

But if Trump’s coalition was competitive, Trump himself was defeated, no less than Romney in 2012. So the question for Republican politicians auditioning to be Trumpists after Trump is whether they actually have a plan to (with apologies to President-elect Joe Biden) build back bigger, to make the right-populist coalition the majority it could be rather than the strong minority it is.

The optimist’s take is that the way to do this is clear: Trump was at his most unpopular when he behaved grotesquely and ceded policymaking to the Republican old guard, so his would-be successors need to act less like tin-pot tyrants, eschew the ranting and the insults, and also make good on some of the policy promises Trump left by the wayside. A populism 2.0 that doesn’t alienate as many people with its rhetoric, that promises more support for families and domestic industry, that accepts universal health care and attacks monopolies and keeps low-skilled immigration low, all while confronting China and avoiding Middle East entanglements and fighting elite progressivism tooth and nail — there’s your new Republican majority.

But there are other possibilities. One is that some of the voters who turned out for the GOP in the last two presidential cycles were drawn in by Trump’s celebrity charisma as much as by any of his policy arguments — that if he alienated suburban women with his finger-in-your-eye behavior, it also helped elevate his appeal with the country’s disaffected blocs. In which case you can’t just shave off the rough edges and expect a different politician to claim the same support. Rural white voters in Wisconsin who felt forgotten by both parties, or Latino men around Miami alienated by wokeness, or for that matter the rebellious grassroots conservatives who backed Trump’s 2016 primary campaign — do any of them respond the same way to a Republican who has picked up the language of populism but comes across as a stuffed shirt rather than a tough guy, a nerd rather than a tycoon, a politician rather than a star?

Then even if it were possible for another Republican to claim and expand his coalition, it’s not clear that Trump himself will let that happen. For one thing, he might run again, and he will certainly keep that possibility open — which means all his would-be successors will need to jockey for his favor, or at least avoid blasts of wrath from Mar-a-Lago. It’s always been clear that Trump would nurture a stab-in-the-back narrative should he lose; now that we know that the race was genuinely close in several key states, his stolen-election narrative may be potent enough to push conservatism toward the fever swamps and away from a constructive populism, a Trumpism that can win.

So Trump will exit the presidency with a complicated and uncertain legacy — as both the man who opened the way to a possible populist majority, and (for the next four years, at least) one of the biggest potential obstacles for Republicans who want to tread that path.

Is there a Trumpism after Trump?

After a long and tense wait, it is finally clear that Democratic Joe Biden will be the next president of the United States. The results came out after it was declared by various US media houses that Biden has claimed the decisive state of Pennsylvania. Later, Biden secured victory in the state of Nevada too, stretching his electoral count to 290, which is 19 more than the mandatory 271.

After watching all Americans taking over the streets after Biden-Harris historic win, singer John Legend and Chrissy Teigen also stepped out of their home to enjoy the vibe. The celebrity couple was seen celebrating in the streets of Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood, California. In the pictures, Chrissy who has given us best faces during the vote counting was seen hanging out of their car through the window, and John was popping out of the sunroof, while a security guard drove. Teigen's mom Pepper Thai was in the front seat. In pics: US Elections 2020: Celebrities who supported Joe Biden in the presidential race to the White House Teigen shared a series of tweets while she was celebrating and cheering with the crowd on the city roads.
