"I would urge the VC to look into the genuine concerns of the students and not treat it like a private university. Many of the students come here because it is affordable," she added. 
 
Another student said that subsidies are provided so that the poor can also study at the varsity. "How will a poor student be able to study here if the hostel fee is over Rs 6,000 to Rs 7000," the student asked. 
 
Police were also seen requesting students to keep their protest peaceful. 
 
"You are resorting to violence. Please keep your protest peaceful," a police official was seen telling the protesters as a group of students removed police barricade. 
The JNUSU has been protesting for about two weeks against the new hostel manual. 
 
JNU Vice-Chancellor had on November 8 alleged that some students had kept Associate Dean Dr Vandana Mishra in illegal captivity as part of their protest.

A city court hearing the 2016 JNU sedition case Saturday observed that the city police's role regarding sanction was complete and it will now ask the Delhi government about the same.

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Deepak Sherawat made the observation after being told by police that sanction was an administrative action and the charge sheet can be filed without that.

DCP of Special Cell of Delhi Police, Pramod Kushwaha, told the court that the agency has already sent a request to the Delhi government seeking sanction.

The court Friday pulled up the Delhi Police over non-appearance of the DCP, who was asked to file a report in the case.

The Delhi Police had earlier told the court that authorities were yet to give requisite sanctions to prosecute former JNU students' union president Kanhaiya Kumar and others in the case, and it would take two to three months to procure sanctions.

On January 14, police had filed a charge sheet in the court against Kumar and others, saying he was leading a procession and supported seditious slogans raised in the JNU campus during an event on February 9, 2016.

The court had also sought a report from the deputy commissioner of police assigned to the case.&nbsp;

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Vice-Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar alleged on Monday that the varsity students forcibly entered his house and confined his wife inside for several hours.

Police, however, said there was a call for a march by some students, but security personnel stopped them when they tried to gain entry.

"This evening few hundred students forcibly broke into my JNU residence and confined my wife inside home for several hours while I was away in a meeting. Is it the way to protest? Terrorosing (sic) a lonely lady at home?" Kumar asked on Twitter.

A student from a Left outfit rejected the allegation and said a group of students had gone to meet the vice-chancellor, but they were allegedly manhandled by the security personnel.

Seven students have been on a hunger strike since last week in protest against the online system of entrance exam that will be implemented from this academic session.

According to sources, students from Left outfits went to the vice-chancellor's residence to demand an audience with him since he had not been meeting them. When they went to meet him last week, he offered them sweets rather than addressing their concern.

On Monday evening, the students allegedly barged inside Kumar's residence while he was away and surrounded his wife. Police were called in and the wives of other university professors rescued her, a professor said. Kumar's wife was rushed to a hospital as she was in a state of trauma.

"We had gone to his residence to meet the V-C. We were manhandled by security personnel and many students have sustained injuries, including JNUSU president N Sai Balaji," a student said.

The police said the situation was under control. The university professors were patrolling the campus to ensure that no untoward incident happened.

After three years of investigation that has involved the recording of evidence from a number of eyewitnesses and the verification of the authenticity of video recordings showing the accused inciting a mob of students and shouting anti-India slogans in the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus, the Special Cell of Delhi Police’s anti-terrorism wing has filed the charge sheet at the Patiala House Court in Delhi.&nbsp;

The chargesheet names Kanhaiya Kumar, the former JNU Students’ Union President, and seven others including Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya of sedition and conspiracy.&nbsp;

Kanhaiya was in Tihar Jail for two weeks in 2016 in the same connection and was later granted interim bail. Coinciding with the JNU incident, Congress president Rahul Gandhi, who was party vice president then, was shown black flags when he went to attend a “Save JNU” rally and express solidarity with the students accused of challenging India’s sovereignty and integrity by raising slogans to break the country.&nbsp;

From their posture, it is obvious that the opposition parties have decided to use the JNU campus as a fertile ground to take on the ruling BJP on the issue of nationalism in the coming parliamentary election. Instead of allowing the police to handle the matter as a law and order issue, the opposition parties are playing with fire as they have failed to denounce those who raised anti-India slogans and wanted to declare terrorist Afzal Guru a martyr. It is not a minor issue and has serious implications.

Earlier, there was allegedly a celebration by a section of students and some outsiders in JNU when in a Maoist attack 76 CRPF men were killed near Chintalnar village in Dantewada district in 2010. Three years ago, there was this rally of anti-national elements shouting slogans against India and in support of “Azadi” of Kashmir. This event, organised to protest against the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru in defiance of a University order denying permission for any such activity, was led by Kanhaiya, who as a student leader has been associated with All India Students Federation (AISF), a left-wing students organisation linked with the Communist Party of India (CPI).

Significantly, the Leftists have commanded the students’ politics in JNU for several decades. It was only in 1978 that their stranglehold had got broken with the historic victory of the 'Free Thinkers' in the JNUSU election. To understand the hegemony of the Left in JNU, one would have to take a close look at the modus operandi of the students’ wings of the CPI and CPI(M). As JNU alumni, one recalls how in the late ‘70s, the SFI and AISF cadres (senior students) were following a time tested strategy to flock around the new students from the word go, i.e. from the time they landed for their entrance test.&nbsp;

After befriending and winning their confidence, these students used to temporarily host a large number of the new students in their hostel rooms; they acted as guides and took them around the library, canteen and different administrative blocks and centres scattered around the old campus.

After that, they followed the strategy of brainwashing and bombarding the ‘freshers’or the newcomers with Leftist jargons and theory to convince them about the "inevitability of class war, and the uprising by the proletariat against the exploiting ruling elite, the capitalists and the bourgeoisie”.

JNU sedition row: Police chargesheet is backed with firm evidence

Former JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar and others, named in a <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/delhi-police-files-sedition-charges-against-jnus-kanhaiya-kumar-umar-khalid-190203">charge sheet filed by Delhi Police in a sedition case Monday</a>, termed the move as "politically motivated" and questioned its timing, ahead of the parliamentary election.

"The charge sheet is politically motivated. However, we want the charges to be framed and a speedy trial in the case so that the truth comes out. We also want to see the videos that have been placed on record as evidence by the police," Kumar told PTI.

He said it was a "diversionary ploy by the Modi government to hide its all-around failures."

"I have not received any summons or information from the court. But if it is true, then we are thankful to the police and (Prime Minister) Modi that finally after three years, when it is time for him and his government to go, the charge sheet has been filed. But what is pertinent is the timing of the charge sheet - just ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.

"It is evident that there is a political motive behind this. The motive is that the Modi government has been a failure in all aspects, it has not been able to fulfil even a single promise, so it is playing all its cards to divert the attention," Kumar told reporters.

Pointing out that the charge sheet has been filed after three years of the incident, he said the Modi government, just as all its other promises, was "not serious" and using the issue now as a political tool.

"If the government was really serious about the case and maintained that we did indulge in anti-national activities, then why did it take three years to file the charge sheet, that too just before the polls?" Kumar asked.

Delhi Police also charged former students -- Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya -- for allegedly shouting anti-India slogans during an event organised on the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus on February 9, 2016, to commemorate the hanging of Parliament-attack mastermind Afzal Guru.

Khalid, who addressed a student gathering at St. Joseph's College in Bangalore on the "role of youth in safeguarding the Constitution", said, "We reject the allegations. The move to file the charge sheet three years after the alleged incident is an attempt to divert the attention (of the people) right before (parliamentary) elections. We will fight it out in court."

"We congratulate Delhi Police, the Home Ministry and the government for waking up from their deep slumber three years after February 9, 2016, and barely three months before the general elections 2019 and filing a charge sheet against us," Khalid and Bhattacharya said in a joint statement.

"Lying is an art. It's not enough to just lie. One also has to time it well. A sense of timing, of placement, is what makes one a master liar. And of course, one also needs to stage one's own cheerleaders who would celebrate each of one's lies. That is the role of most of the media today under this regime," they added.

Others charged in the case are Aquib Hussain, Mujeeb Hussain, Muneeb Hussain, Umar Gul, Rayeea Rassol, Bashir Bhat and Basharat.

As many as 36 others, including Communist Party of India (CPI) leader D Raja's daughter Aprajita, Shehla Rashid (then vice-president of the JNUSU), Rama Naga, Ashutosh Kumar and Banojyotsna Lahiri have been named in column 12 of the charge sheet due to insufficient evidence against them, police sources said.&nbsp;

Former Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) leader Shehla Rashid, who had led the campaign for Kumar's release and other students, said, "This is a completely bogus case in which ultimately everyone will be acquitted. The timing of the charge sheet right before the elections just reflects how the BJP wants to reap electoral benefits out of this especially after their defeat in the state elections recently. I was not even on campus on the day of the event."

"Modi government has used this manufactured controversy in instalments. The next instalment would be on the nomination day for 2019 elections," tweeted Rashid with"#JitteryModi".

CPI Leader D Raja said, "It is politically motivated. After three years Delhi Police is filing the charge sheet in the case. We will fight it legally in court and politically outside court."

The current JNUSU expressed solidarity with those named in the charge sheet.&nbsp;

Professor Chintamani Mahapatra, Rector-I of the varsity, said, "Certain kind of leaves are not a right. In many cases, professors apply late at night or after 5.30 pm when the office closes. She had applied for vacation leave/casual leave and on Monday, we wrote to her to clarify on the kind of leave."

Singh, however, said university staff have the option of applying for combination leaves and that is what she did.

"We have an e-office system where we can apply for leaves. It has dropdown menus and I had applied for vacation/casual leave around lunchtime on January 2. The next day, when I was in Bengaluru, I received an e-mail saying my leave had been rejected," she said.

She said that casual leave is a right and she did not apply for duty leave since it is an "entitlement" and her earlier duty leave applications had been rejected.

"Since I did not want the thing to be disputed, I applied for combination leave. On Monday, when I came back to office, I checked the e-office system and I saw the vice-chancellor's remarks on the leave cancellation and they read 'leave is granted subject to marking of attendance'," she said.

The JNU Teachers' Association and the administration has been at loggerheads over the issue of compulsory attendance, with the teachers alleging punitive actions have been taken against them for failing to comply with attendance rules.

Mahapatra said marking attendance is "only a matter of accountability" and even the University Grants Commission has said teachers should remain present in their respective offices for at least five hours each working day.

"If the teachers are coming what is the harm in signing a register. There were complaints from some students who said they were not able to meet teachers," he added.

All schools and special centres will shortly have biometric attendance system, he said.

"How bad you may ask? After I came to Bengaluru, I checked my e-mail and found that the leave application I had put in to come here and receive the award had been rejected by my vice-chancellor. So please be warned that my presence on this stage today is illegitimate," she said.

Things at university comically bad: JNU professor

JNU student leader Umar Khalid has filed a complaint with the Delhi Police that he and Gujarat's Independent MLA Jignesh Mevani had received death threats from a man who identified himself as fugitive gangster Ravi Pujari, a senior official said today.

Yesterday, Khalid approached the police with a complaint over the threats and a case was registered, the police official said, adding that they are investigating the matter.

The student leader said that he was informed by Mevani about the threats, and he has not received any call himself till now.

"Mevani has been receiving death threats for the last two-three days. In one of the calls he received, the caller had mentioned my name too. He had mentioned that if we don't stop giving speeches we would be killed.

"Mevani informed me and I approached the police. A case has been registered and they said that they will do a threat assessment and take a call on providing police protection," Khalid told PTI.

Mevani too had alleged yesterday that he has received death threats from Pujari.

When asked whether the calls were being received in relation to the arrests made by the Pune Police on June 6 in connection with the Bhima-Koregaon violence, he said, "I am not aware about the context. Pujari has not mentioned that he was calling in that context. I don't feel it is a coincidence that the calls (to Mevani) started coming from that day (the arrests were made)."

Elgar Parishad, organised to commemorate 200 years of the Koregaon Bhima battle, was held on December 31 at Shaniwarwada. It was attended by Mevani, Khalid along with Rohit Vemula's mother Radhika Vemula and Bharip Bahujan Mahasangh President Prakash Ambedkar.

In 2016, Khalid's father Syed Qasim Illyas Rasool had filed a police complaint, claiming that he has received a phone call "threatening to kill" his son if he doesn't leave the country.

This incident had happened when the police was looking for Khalid in connection with the sedition case filed against him, former JNU students' union president Kanhaiya Kumar, and Anirban Bhattacharya for allegedly organising an event against the hanging of 2001 Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.

Guru was hanged in 2013.

The Delhi Assembly on Wednesday passed a resolution, condemning the police&#39;s &quot;lethargic attitude&quot; in probing the alleged sexual harassment of some women students of JNU by a professor and stating that the AAP government would provide all possible help to the victims, including legal assistance by appointing special public prosecutors in the cases.

The resolution, moved by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Sourabh Bharadwaj, stated that the Delhi government should also provide counselling to the victims through its women and child welfare department and the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW).

It stated that the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students had filed complaints of sexual harassment and molestation against Atul Johri, a professor of the School of Life Sciences in the premier institute.

&quot;This House therefore condemns the lethargic attitude of the Delhi Police in not taking prompt action on the complaints of the students and hence, the students had to resort to protest and gherao of the police station to get their complaints heard and acted upon by the Delhi Police,&quot; the resolution that was passed by a voice vote stated.

&quot;The House resolves that the Government of Delhi shall extend all possible assistance to the victims, including legal assistance by appointing special public prosecutors, and counselling through its women and child welfare department and DCW,&quot; it further stated.

A case has been registered against a professor of the JNU&#39;s School of Life Sciences (SLS) following allegations of sexual harassment against him by a group of women students, police said today.

The FIR was registered at the Vasant Kunj police station in southwest Delhi, they said.

&quot;The professor often makes sexually-coloured remarks, open demands for sex and comments on the figure of almost every girl. If a girl objects, he holds a grudge against her,&quot; the women students had said in a statement yesterday.

The office bearers of the JNU Students Union (JNUSU) have told the Delhi High Court that they have not violated its order on holding protests in the varsity as they did not block access to the administrative block.

They also submitted before the high court that its August last year direction to not hold protests within 100 metres of the admin block should not be viewed technically as the spirit of the direction was to prevent obstruction of any access to the building.

The submissions were made before Justice V K Rao who is hearing a plea moved by the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) seeking contempt action against the JNUSU office bearers for holding protests within 100 meters of the administrative block.

The varsity in its petition moved through central government standing counsel Monika Arora and advocate Kushal Sharma, has contended that the office bearers have violated the high court&#39;s August 9, 2017, direction.

The varsity in its plea has also claimed that the protesting students had obstructed access to the administrative block of JNU.

The arguments in the matter remained inconclusive and are expected to continue tomorrow.

The JNUSU office bearers also told the court that other student bodies and associations, as well as a teachers group, have also held protests within 100 metres of the administrative block, but no action has been taken against them.

Therefore, the 100-meter restriction should not be viewed technically, their lawyer told the court.

The JNUSU office bearers had earlier told the court that the main reason behind the protests in the varsity was not holding of academic council meetings.

The court had on February 16, in an interim order, directed the JNU students not to obstruct the vice chancellor and other staff from entering the administrative block to carry out their work.

The interim order was passed on JNU&#39;s plea that the protests near the administrative block were hampering its day-to-day functioning, including the disbursal salaries in connection with the Seventh Pay Commission.

JNU students today gheraoed the administration block demanding a meeting with the vice-chancellor on the issue of compulsory attendance, and stopped Chief Proctor Kaushal Kumar and Rector-1 Chintamani Mahapatra from leaving the building.

Hundreds of students, led by the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students&#39; Union (JNUSU), picketed outside all the gates of the building and confronted and stopped senior university officials who tried to go out.

In a statement, Registrar Pramod Kumar said Mahapatra was feeling unwell and asked the students to disperse.

The students demanded the administration revoke the compulsory 75 per cent attendance required in an academic year for availing of scholarships and fellowships, and convene a meeting of the Academic Council which was postponed indefinitely.

Since 11 am, a group of students performed skits and mimes and sang songs near the main entrance of the administration block. Security guards were deployed to block the students&#39; entry into the building.

A human chain was also formed around the building.
