Hours after Republican Jim Jordan said he was pausing his bid to be the speaker of the US House of Representatives, the Ohio Congressman said he would push ahead with another vote on his bid to become the House Speaker.

For over two weeks, the US House of Representatives has been without a speaker after the previous speaker Kevin McCarthy was ousted by conservative Republican members.&nbsp;

"I'm still running for speaker and I plan to go to the floor and get the votes and win this race," Jordan told reporters hours after announcing support for fellow Republican Patrick McHenry.

Jordan met with some of the 22 fellow Republicans who have voted against him.

"We all told him that we're solid no's. That was the discussion," Republican Representative Vern Buchanan told reporters.

"Now he's got a decision to make."

According to a Reuters report, some members have suggested a formal vote is not needed to give McHenry expanded powers and believe that the acting speaker position inherently gives him the authority to act.

McHenry has pushed back on that idea.

Jim Jordan has failed to get enough votes to be the US House speaker twice so far.

Republicans who have voted against Jordan the first two times have predicted he will also fail on a third vote.

Representative Drew Ferguson, said in a statement on Thursday: "The House Republican Conference does not need a bully as the speaker."

Hardline conservative Jim Jordan told his fellow Republicans he will suspend his bid to serve as speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives and back Republican Patrick McHenry to fill the role on a temporary basis, lawmakers said on Thursday.

The House has been without a leader for more than two weeks, and Jordan has twice failed to secure the 217 votes needed to claim the speaker's gavel as he has faced opposition from Democrats and more than 20 of his fellow Republicans.

Republican hardliners expressed outrage at the deal. That group had exercised enormous influence in the House through the course of this year, bringing Washington to the edge of default and the brink of a government shutdown in a budget-cutting drive that has had limited success so far.

The House could vote on that proposal in the afternoon, said Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, who said she does not support it.

It was not clear whether Jordan, who is backed by former President Donald Trump, would drop his leadership bid entirely or continue to try to build support among Republicans.

Jim Jordan suspends bid for US House speaker, backs McHenry

Lawmakers in the US House of Representatives have again rejected hardline conservative Jim Jordan's bid to become speaker. This is the second time the pro-Trump leader has fallen short of the required votes. The leadership vacuum continues to paralyse Washington. There was no clear resolution in sight as the crisis entered its 15th day.

The lower chamber of US Congress has been in this state since the ouster of Republican speaker Kevin McCarthy by his own party colleagues earlier this month.

In order to be elected as speaker of the House, Jordan can only afford to lose four Republican votes. But in the second ballot, 22 of his colleagues rejected his candidacy, two more than a day earlier.

The stakes are high amid the Israel-Hamas conflict, a renewed push for Ukraine aid and the looming government shutdown.

However, Jordan's centrist colleagues within the Republican Party are wary of his hard-right politics. They have voiced irritation over a concerted effort to whip extra votes for the 59-year-old former wrestling champion.&nbsp;

"Each day that passes without a speaker of the House is a national security risk," said Jordan supporter and California Republican David Valadao.

"I voted for the Republican Conference's nominee for speaker because we must get back to work, and we cannot do that until we have a speaker."

The party has been in disarray since right-wing rebels forced out Kevin McCarthy, leaving the&nbsp;Republican-controlled House unable to address mounting crises, including a looming government shutdown and US ally Israel waging a war on Hamas after deadly attacks.

Louisiana Representative Steve Scalise was initially seen as the best hope for a new standard-bearer who could heal the party's bitter divides, and he beat Jordan to the nomination in a secret ballot earlier this week.

But the 59-year-old Ohioan, backed by former president Donald Trump, gets a second chance now since Scalise dropped out, after it became clear he lacked the 217 votes necessary to prevail in the full House.

Republicans preferred Jordan, a darling of the right but a divisive figure in more mainstream circles, over Georgia congressman Austin Scott in the Republicans' second internal nomination vote of the week.

"I highly respect Jim Jordan. He is an asset to the&nbsp;Republican&nbsp;Party," Scott said in a social media post following the vote.&nbsp;

"Our conference has spoken, and now we must unite behind Jordan so we can get Congress back to work."

Unlike McCarthy and Scalise, Jordan has the trust of the party's most conservative faction, having spent years as a fringe rabble-rouser before getting the chairmanship of the powerful Judiciary Committee.

Crucially, he also has many admirers in the influential right-wing cable news ecosphere, most notably Fox News star Sean Hannity, who said lawmakers would be "crazy" to vote against Jordan.&nbsp;

<h2>'Natural born principled leader'</h2>

"He is a natural born principled leader who will lead house Republicans to unite vs the radical left on the house and senate," Hannity posted on social media.

Marjorie Taylor Greene, a colleague of Jordan in the hard right Freedom Caucus, said it was "yet to be seen" if he could win a vote in the full House but repeated her full-throated endorsement.

Jordan is disliked by moderates wary of his hardline outlook, and who remember his leading role in the downfall of a previous&nbsp;Republican&nbsp;speaker, John Boehner, and in the longest US government shutdown in history, in 2018.&nbsp;

He beat Scott by 124 votes to 81, meaning he will need to find support from another 90-plus Republicans to win the vote in the full House.&nbsp;

He called a "validation vote" immediately after his nomination to ask members if they would vote for him on the floor. Only 152 of his colleagues said yes.

"We have a lot of members who just feel like they will let perfect be the enemy of the good," said centre-right congressman Dusty Johnson.

"That is not how any functional government, or any functional marriage, or any functional business works."

With several Democrats and Republicans already out of town, the House adjourned for the weekend without voting -- giving Jordan precious extra hours to boost his support.&nbsp;

"The most extreme members of the Republican&nbsp;caucus have hijacked their party and paralyzed Congress," said Seth Magaziner, a Democratic congressman from Rhode Island.

"Without a speaker, we cannot protect our national security."

Former United States president Donald Trump on Friday (Oct 6) endorsed hard-right Republican, Ohio congressman Jim Jordan, for the job of speaker of the House of Representatives succeeding Kevin McCarthy, who was ousted by his own party in an unprecedented vote.&nbsp;

Taking to his Truth Social social media platform, Trump wrote: "Congressman Jim Jordan has been a STAR long before making his very successful journey to Washington, DC, representing Ohio's 4th Congressional District."&nbsp;

The former president added, "he (Jim Jordan) will be a GREAT Speaker of the House &amp; has my Complete &amp; Total Endorsement!"&nbsp;

Just a few hours before the post, Trump had offered to temporarily take up the role, which was left vacant this week after McCarthy was axed in a historic rebellion by far-right members of his own party.&nbsp;

Rumours suggest Trump's potential first visit to the US Capitol since the attack on January 6, 2021, and then the ex-president also suggested that he might step in as speaker on an interim basis.&nbsp;

Earlier, Trump had told Fox News that he had "been asked to speak as a unifier because I have so many friends in Congress".

"If they don't get the vote, they have asked me if I would consider taking the speakership until they get somebody longer-term, because I am running for president," he said.&nbsp;
