In a bid to modernise the cops in Kashmir Valley, the Jammu and Kashmir Police recently floated tenders on the online GeM portal. It issued tenders for 500 Sig Sauer-716 rifles and 100 Sig Sauer MPX 9 mm pistols.

The rifle weighs around 3.84 kgs without the magazine and fires at a cycle rate of 650-850 per minute. Experts say that the new equipment would provide a massive boost for the anti-terror operations.&nbsp;

The tenders were issued days after the J&amp;K Police procured 8,000 new lightweight bulletproof jackets.

Apart from that, they have also been provided with mine proof vehicles and state-of-the-art drones and CCTVS to increase the vigil across the region.&nbsp;

The police officials said the procurement of new weapons and gadgets are in line with its aim to upgrade the personnel with the latest technologies to combat terrorists.&nbsp;

“Modernisation has been going on for the last few years and it will continue in the future as well. We are getting new weapons and drones. J&amp;K Police has been upgrading itself for the past few years, but the most important was the technical surveillance and technical input generation capability,” said Vijay Kumar, Inspector General, Kashmir.

Underlining the importance of equipping the police with new ammunition, Kumar said, “Jammu and Kashmir police have been focussing on tactics and firing skills. It’s the police that gets 75-85 per cent of information about the terror groups and terrorists. We use both human intelligence and technical surveillance to get all the information.”

The Government of India procured the same rifles in 2019 for the Indian army. Around 72,000 rifles were bought for the soldiers posted along Line of Control and the Line of Actual Control.&nbsp;

"Any individual who shares or forwards messages or videos which are fanning terror, violence [or] causing alarm or panic on social media platforms (Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, etc.) can be treated to be acting with intent to cause terror and disturbances in law and order situations," read the advertisement.

According to the Jammu and Kashmir Police, these commercials and awareness efforts will reduce the number of young people joining terrorist organisations, resulting in an improvement in law and order.

A young woman police officer in Kashmir is winning hearts and praises for her action in countering the drug abuse in central Kashmir's Budgam district by arresting drug traders and seizing illegal drugs from youth as young as 16 to 25 years.

Nilza shot to fame after her video, where a large crowd can be seen cheering her in Budgam district for her work in countering drug menace, went viral. The drug use by youth has been a cause of concern for the locals in the area where the young officer is deployed.

Hailing from a far-flung village in Ladakh, Nilza is a fresh face in the ranks of Jammu and Kashmir police. She says that she has taken a pledge to fight against the menace of drug abuse in Kashmir.

"I never imagined that this video will get such a great response. This is just the tip of an iceberg. There is more to do and my senior officers have been doing the commendable job before me to control drug abuse," said Nilza Angmo, DySP in her first interview in the uniform.

In just a month, Nilza has arrested nearly a dozen youth along with drugs that include Corex bottles, diazepam tablets and other banned drugs which are commonly used by addicts.

"Drugs and drug abuse has become an evil in our society which is threatening. For more than a year, we have launched a sustained strategy to counter this and at least 40 to 45 FIRs have been registered in a year in the district," says Amod Ashok Nagpure, Superintendent of Police Budgam district, adding that these efforts are paying returns.

The locals of the surrounding villages are praising the police and the officer for her work and expect more stringent against the drug suppliers in Kashmir valley.

"There can be no better service than this. Our youth is getting ruined because of these drugs. I want to thank the police officer for her action and hope police will continue to counter drug abuse," says young Aqib, who hails from the village where people praised the officer.

The J&amp;K police said it had worked out two grenade attacks and arrested two terrorists. A total of five terrorists were arrested by the police.&nbsp;

"Given the kind of explosives which have been recovered, it seems they were planning a big attack. An investigation is being done to find out the further plan," DIG, Central Kashmir, VK Birdi told reporters.&nbsp;

The arrested terrorists have been identified as Ejaz Ahmed Sheikh, Umar Hamid Sheikh, Imtiaz Ahmed, Sahil Farooq Gujari, Naseer Ahmed Mir. All of them are the residents of Hazratbal.

J&K Police busts Jaish terror module, averts major terror attack ahead of Republic Day 

Jammu and Kashmir&nbsp;police on Wednesday said that it is recommending, the detained officer and currently suspended Davinder Singh to be sacked after he was arrested travelling with Hizbul terrorists.

Speaking at a press conference, Jammu and Kashmir DGP Dilbag Singh said, "we are recommending his sacking to the government."

"Cannot share right now what has been revealed during the interrogation." DGP also said.

On Sunday, Deputy Superintendent of Police&nbsp;Davinder Singh was arrested by Jammu and Kashmir police while he was travelling with&nbsp;two Hizbul terrorists.

According to reports, the investigation&nbsp;has been handed over to the National Investigation Agency.

Earlier in the day, NIA Director-General met Union Home secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla pertaining to an investigation of the case, news agency ANI reported citing sources.

The police have already set up a special investigation team which is headed by DIG South Kashmir Atul Goyal, who spent a long time with the NIA before returning to his home cadr.&nbsp;

The security forces are also seeing the CCTV footage taken from the Srinagar airport and have sent his mobile phone for the forensic investigation to get more clues. All this may open up more possible links of an officer with terrorists or accomplices.&nbsp;

According to sources, Davinder was on the radar of security forces from quite some time.&nbsp;

In 2019, he took Hizb-ul-Mujahideen Commander Syed Naveed alias Babu to Jammu successfully where they stayed at Sidra area and later dropped him back as well. But the circumstances were different this time as a phone call was traced by the J&amp;K police which hinted at the movement of terrorists to the Jammu region.&nbsp;

Recommending J&K officer Davinder Singh's sacking to government: DGP

A top Jammu and Kashmir Police officer has been detained by the security forces during an anti-militancy operation in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district along with three terrorists at a checkpoint which was erected in the area after a specific input.

The arrest of the officer, who was deployed with the anti-hijacking unit at the Srinagar International Airport, has shocked the security forces operating in the valley as the officer was involved in several anti-terrorism operations in the militancy-hit Jammu and Kashmir in the past.

Sources have told WION that Deputy Superintendent of Police Devinder Singh, along with top Hizbul commander Naveed Ahmad Shah alias Naveed Babu and three terrorists, were travelling in a car which was possibly on its way to the Jammu region.&nbsp;

The operation was monitored and supervised by the Deputy Inspector General of Police, South Kashmir range Atul Goyal along with other officers.&nbsp;

Sources in the police say that Naveed’s phone call was traced by the officials which indicated that he was moving to Jammu. The security forces then laid checkpoints in several parts of south Kashmir.

All those arrested were taken to a police station where separate interrogations of the officer and the terrorists were held. If sources are to be believed, the DSP has claimed that he was attempting to convince terrorists to surrender.

Following the arrests, the security forces carried out raids at the two residences of the cop - one at Indra Nagar in Srinagar and the other one at Tral in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district. Three AK-47 assault rifles and five grenades were recovered from the sites.&nbsp;

Sources privy to the information say that two FIRs have been registered till now. The DSP has also been booked under section 19 in FIR number 5/2020.

What is more shocking is that Devinder had bagged the prestigious President's Police Medal on the Independence Day last year. Singh was recruited as a police sub-inspector and with time rose to the ranks to become the DSP rank officer.&nbsp;

The officer was among the first to join the counter-insurgency group in Kashmir, commonly known as Special Operation Group after he was appointed to the team. He was later removed from the group on the grounds of extortion. A high ranking officer told WION that he was attached on different occasions after complaints against him were received.

Devinder was seen posing in a picture with a group of foreign envoys who visited Kashmir on an official tour to get a first-hand account of how things have changed since August 5 when J&amp;K special status was revoked.&nbsp;

In a letter written by the parliament attack convict Mohammad Afzal Guru - which was made public by the family of Guru - he alleged Singh of torturing him at a special task force camp and forcing him to take a Parliament attack co-accused to New Delhi.&nbsp;

Singh was among the officers who had arrested Afzal Guru after his name emerged in the investigation regarding the 2001 Indian parliament attack.&nbsp;

But apart from Singh, the arrest of Syed Naveed Shah alias Naveed Babu &nbsp;- who has been instrumental in several attacks on security forces - was also held. Naveed, a policeman-turned terrorist deserted the police ranks to join the terrorist in 2017 and was involved in several attacks on security forces and crimes in south Kashmir.&nbsp;

The top Hizbul commander was handling Hizbul Mujahideen operations in the south and central Kashmir from the last few months. Police had also pointed at his role in the killing of non-local civilians and setting an apple laden truck following the abrogation of J&amp;K special status.&nbsp;

The state police had registered a case at the Awantipora police station on February 14 after a suicide bomber blew himself up next to a CRPF bus, which was part of a 78-vehicle convoy carrying over 2,500 personnel on their way from Jammu to Srinagar.

The NIA has already gathered explosive material from the blast site in Lethpora in Pulwama district of south Kashmir and has been involved in the questioning of around a dozen people detained by police following the bombing, officials said.

The agency has also met senior police, intelligence and army officers to gather whatever evidence they have, they said.

The NIA will probe the planning and execution of the terror attack, the second such in three decades of militancy in the state. In 2000, a 17-year-old Kashmiri boy had blown himself outside the Srinagar-based army cantonment in the year 2000, killing two Army men.

On Monday, three Jaish terrorists were killed in a 16-hour operation in Pulwama's Pinglan area, 12 km from the spot of the February 14 attack. An Army major and four security personnel also lost their lives.&nbsp;

A panel of three names for the post was submitted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) last week. The Supreme Court on September 20 had made it clear that Singh will continue in office till the UPSC scrutinises and provides a panel of three police officers for regular appointment of the police chief.

Vaid was posted as Transport Commissioner, a post which was held by Saugat Biswas, a 2006-IAS batch officer. The post has been upgraded from an additional secretary to the rank of secretary. It will be headquartered in Jammu.

The Jammu and Kashmir Police, investigating the gang-rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Kathua, have said that prime accused Sanji Ram told them he decided to kill the girl to save his son.

News agency PTI quotes the police as saying that during interrogation, Sanji Ram said the girl was first raped on January 10, the day she was kidnapped, by Ram's nephew, <a href="www.wionews.com/india-news/juvenile-accused-in-kathua-case-appears-in-court-given-charge-sheet-132801">a juvenile</a>, and killed on January 14. Her body was found on January 17 in a forest.

The investigators also said that the girl as kept in a temple where Sanji Ram was the custodian. The aim of the kidnapping was to scare and drive away the nomadic Gujjar and Bakarwal communities from the area, PTI quoted investigators.

Sanji Ram further told the investigators that he found out about the <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/india-hits-the-street-to-protest-unnao-kathua-gang-rapes-130612">Kathua rape case</a> on January 13 when the nephew confessed to him. The boy took a long time in carrying out a task given to him by Sanji Ram which enraged him, and he beat him up. That is when the nephew confessed to Sanji Ram about the crime he had committed, the investigators said, and also named his son Vishal as partner in crime.

Sanji Ram then decided to kill the girl as he did not want to leave any evidence that led to his son, the investigators said.

According to the plan hatched by Sanji Ram and other accused, the girl was taken out of the temple on the intervening night of January 13 and 14. Police officer Deepak Khajuria who joined them, wanted to rape the girl once more before she was killed.

The eight-year-old was killed on January 14, but things didn't go as planned.

The body of the child was to be transported and disposed of in the Hiranagar canal nearby. However, a vehicle could not be arranged in time. The juvenile, Sanji Ram's son Vishal, Khajuria and another accused Mannu lifted the body and took it back to the temple while Ram kept watch outside, the investigators said.

Further investigation showed that Sanji Ram told his nephew and his son the next day that his friend had refused to bring a car so the two had to throw it in the jungle.

Preparations for the abduction had started on January 7 when sedatives and 'manar' (local cannabis or bhang) were purchased, the police chargesheet said.

The child was sedated with 'manar' and kept in the temple covered with a rug and a mattress weighing nearly 15 kg, investigators said.

However, Sanji Ram's lawyer Ankur Sharma refused to comment on the investigators' version, saying it would not be appropriate for him to discuss defence strategy. "At least the defence lawyer should not be commenting on the merits of the case. It is like leaking your strategy as a defence lawyer," he said.

The police chargesheets - a separate chargesheet was filed for the juvenile - named Ram, his nephew, his son Vishal, SPOs Khajuria and Surender Verma and Mannu.

While Ram has been charged with murder, kidnapping and destruction of evidence, Mannu has been charged with kidnapping. The other three have rape added to the list of charges.

The chargesheet also names head constable Tilak Raj and sub-inspector Anand Dutta - who allegedly took Rs 4 lakh from Sanji Ram and destroyed crucial evidence.

The police have found two empty cartridges of an INSAS rifle at the spot where Fayaz was shot by the terrorists in Shopian.&nbsp;

&quot;We had two incidents of weapon-snatching in south Kashmir recently. We have leads that the Kulgam snatching was carried out by Lashkar militants, while Hizb militants were involved in weapon-snatching at Shopian court complex (on May 2). So it could be one of those weapons,&quot; he said. &nbsp;

Hizbul Mujahideen is designated as a terror organisation by India, US and the EU, while Lashkar is designated as a terror organisation&nbsp;by India, US and the United Nations. However, in Kashmir these organisations continue to be called militant groups because of the fear of recrimination.&nbsp;

&quot;The doctors and police officers who examined the body did not find any torture marks,&quot; Gillani said.&nbsp;

Fayaz had gone to attend his cousin&#39;s wedding at Batapura, about 74 km from state capital Srinagar, from where he was abducted by the terrorists at about 10 pm on Tuesday. His bullet-riddled body was found on Wednesday morning.&nbsp;

On his first leave since joining the Army, he had reached Batapura from Akhnoor in Jammu region where he was posted with 2 Rajputana Rifles.&nbsp;

Hizb hand suspected in Indian Army lieutenant Ummer Fayaz's murder: J&K Police

Suspected terrorists barged inside a police post guarding the court complex of southern Shopian district in Jammu and Kashmir late on Tuesday night, and decamped with five service rifles.

The terrorists decamped along with five service rifles including four INSAS rifles and an AK-47 rifle.

This is the second incident in a week targeting weapons of police personnel, as on May 1st, Rajouri was put on high alert after the weapon of a policeman was stolen from the station itself.

The police said that an AK 47 rifle of a police personnel was stolen.

Last month, a large cache of arms and ammunition, including 35 assorted rifles belonging to the police went missing in south Kashmir.

Among the arms and ammunition that are still untraced are 21 INSAS rifles, 12 SLR rifles, two AK 47 rifles, one Light Machine Gun and three Carbine Machine Guns.

Incidents of gun snatching are notorious in the Valley, as several cases have been reported of terrorists or gunmen barging into police stations and wresting the weapons from the personnel.&nbsp;
