After UK and Amsterdam, women in Afghanistan protest over Mahsa Amini's death

Ebrahim Raisi, the hardline President of Iran will address the nation via television on Wednesday (September 28) as authorities struggle to contain protests that have spread to almost all parts of the country. The protests started after the custodial death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was detained by Iran's morality police for wearing "unsuitable attire".

Iranians have persisted with protests in spite of a growing death toll and crackdown by security forces. The crackdown has been fierce with security forces using tear gas, clubs, and in some cases, live ammunition. Social media videos have shown protesters calling for an end to Islamic clerical rule in the country.

Still, a collapse of the Islamic Republic seems remote in the near term since its leaders are determined not to show the kind of weakness they believe sealed the fate of the U.S.-backed Shah in 1979, a senior Iranian official told Reuters.

As protests spread amid crackdown, Iran President Ebrahim Raisi to address nation

The US on Thursday (September 28) imposed fresh sanctions on companies suspected of involvement in Iran's petrochemical and petroleum trade. Some of these companies are based in China. Washington has warned of further actions to enforce its economic curbs on Tehran.

In a statement, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that sanctions had been placed on two China-based companies, Zhonggu Storage and Transportation Co. Ltd, and WS Shipping Co Ltd.

The US Treasury Department also slapped sanctions on a network of companies involved in what it said was the sale of hundreds of millions of dollars worth of Iranian petrochemical and petroleum products to users in South and East Asia.

This action has targetted Iranian brokers and companies in UAE, Hong Kong and India.

Washington and Tehran's indirect talks to revive a 2015 nuclear pact, the so-called Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), have broken down.

"As Iran continues to accelerate its nuclear program in violation of the JCPOA, we will continue to accelerate our enforcement of sanctions on Iran’s petroleum and petrochemical sales under authorities that would be removed under the JCPOA," Blinken said in the statement.

"These enforcement actions will continue on a regular basis, with an aim to severely restrict Iran’s oil and petrochemical exports."

Blinken warned anyone involved in such sales and transactions should stop immediately if they wish to avoid being subjected to U.S. sanctions.

Iran stepped up pressure on celebrities and journalists over Mahsa Amini protests

Protests continue to rage across Iran over the death of 22-year-old Mhasa Amini who died in police custody after being detained by the morality police for not wearing her hijab properly. Since then her death has led to global protests calling for justice but it has also escalated tensions between Iran and Iraq.

As anti-hijab protest escalates, Ebrahim Raisi says Iran will deal with protests 'decisively'

Several people were killed after Iranian armed forced bombed Kurdish targets in Iraq for the third time in five days. Iraq responded by summoning the Iranian envoy in Baghdad. Is the anti-hijab unrest spiraling into a broader conflict? Priyanka Sharma tells you.

Iran's President Ebrahim Raisi condemned Wednesday the "chaos" sparked by a wave of women-led protests over the death of Mahsa Amini while in the custody of the Islamic republic's morality police.

"Those who took part in the riots must be dealt with decisively, this is the demand of the people," said Raisi in a televised interview.

"People's safety is the red line of the Islamic republic of Iran and no one is allowed to break the law and cause chaos," he said.

"The enemy has targeted national unity and wants to pit people against each other," added the ultraconservative president, accusing Iran's archfoe the United States of stoking the unrest.

Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman, died on September 16, three days after she had been arrested for allegedly breaching Iran's strict rules for women on wearing hijab headscarves and modest clothing.

Raisi said the nation had felt "grief and sorrow" over her death, and that forensics and judiciary experts would soon present a final report, but also warned that "protests are different to riots".

"Woman, Life, Freedom!" the protesters have chanted in Iran's biggest demonstrations in almost three years, in which women have defiantly burned their headscarves and cut off their hair.

Their actions have been matched in solidarity protests worldwide, with British-Iranian Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, who spent six years in jail in Iran, cutting her hair in a video shared on the BBC Persian service.

Amini's bereaved parents have filed a complaint, demanding "a thorough investigation" and the release of "all videos and photographs" of her while in custody, said their lawyer Saleh Nikbakht.

An Iraq-based cousin of Amini, who is a member of a Kurdish nationalist group, charged that she died after a "violent blow to the head" and that one officer had vowed to "instil the rules in her and teach her how to wear the hijab and how to dress".

As the Iranian protests have flared for 12 nights in a row, Iran's police command vowed its forces would confront them "with all their might", in a crackdown that one rights group says has already killed at least 76 people.

Cowardly attacks

Iran has blamed outside forces for the unrest, including "counter-revolutionary" Kurdish groups based in northern Iraq -- across from Iran's Kurdistan province Amini hailed from, and where the protests first flared.

In a major escalation, Iran on Wednesday launched cross-border missile and drone strikes that killed 13 people in Iraq's Kurdistan region, after accusing Kurdish armed groups based there of fuelling the unrest.

The attacks were condemned by the UN mission in Iraq, and the federal government in Baghdad summoned the Iranian ambassador.

The United States condemned the "brazen attacks" and Britain said Iraq's "indiscriminate bombardment" demonstrates "a repeated pattern of Iranian destabilising activity in the region".

Germany slammed the "escalation... against the backdrop of domestic political protests in Iran" and rejected "attempts to locate the causes of the Iranian protests in the neighbouring country".

The Kurdish Democratic Party of Iran, one of the groups targeted, charged that "these cowardly attacks are occurring at a time when the terrorist regime of Iran is unable to crack down on ongoing protests inside and silence the Kurdish and Iranian peoples' civil resistance".

Not a big deal

The Iranian government -- its economy already hit by sanctions over its nuclear programme -- has sought to play down the crisis.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said he told Western diplomats at recent UN meetings that the protests were "not a big deal" for the stability of the clerical state.

"There is not going to be regime change in Iran. Don't play to the emotions of the Iranian people," he told National Public Radio in New York, also accusing "outside elements" of stirring up violence.

Fars news agency said Tuesday "around 60" people had been killed since Amini's death. But the Oslo-based group Iran Human Rights said the crackdown has killed at least 76 people.

Iran's response has drawn concern from the United Nations and condemnation from the around the world, with Germany and Spain summoning the Iranian ambassadors and the United States and Canada announcing new sanctions.

The son of Iran's late shah, in an interview near Washington with AFP, hailed the protests and urged the world to add to the pressure on the clerical leadership.

Reza Pahlavi, whose father was toppled in the 1979 Islamic Revolution, urged greater preparation for a future Iranian system that is secular and democratic.

"It is truly in modern times, in my opinion, the first revolution for the women, by the women -- with the support of the Iranian men, sons, brothers and fathers," said Pahlavi.

Iran's Raisi condemns 'chaos' of protests after Mahsa Amini's death

An international outcry was sparked by pictures showing thousands of Afghans frantically attempting to flee their country in the wake of a hasty American pullout in 2021.

Approximately 6,000 American soldiers were working to evacuate American citizens, members of the military, and Afghans who had been granted Special Immigrant Visas (SIV) as of August 22, 2021. SIVs are a unique programme created to safeguard Afghans who put their lives in danger while working for American forces in Afghanistan.

These poorly planned evacuations moved slowly. They are taking place in the midst of mayhem in Kabul, where people were being attacked by members of the now-reigning Taliban and American forces and were forced to navigate checkpoints that are nearly impassable.

The Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission's Shaharzad Akbar described the situation as "failure upon failure."

The United States has taken in more than 20,000 Afghan refugees over the previous 20 years, on average about 1,000 every year. However, only 11,800 refugees from all over the world arrived in the United States during the fiscal year 2020–2021, and only 495 of them were granted Afghan Special Immigrant Visas.

Afghan refugees in Europe

Afghans have also migrated or fled to Europe for many years. Almost 300,000 of them landed on the continent between 2015 and 2016. After Syrians, they made up the second-largest group of migrants and asylum seekers. People who are seeking asylum are those whose applications for refugee status have not yet been processed.

The Afghan population in Europe is still relatively tiny and is dispersed unevenly. Many Afghans were on the verge of expulsion prior to the Taliban taking control of Kabul in August 2021. The largest host nation in Europe is Germany, which is followed by Austria, France, and Sweden.

Approximately 7,000 Afghans received permanent or temporary legal status in the European Union during the first three months of 2021. Greece, France, Germany, and Italy are where the majority of them are stationed, with smaller Afghan contingents in other EU nations.

According to the 2016 census, there are about 47,000 Afghan permanent residents in Australia, some of whom arrived as early as 1979. Another 4,200 Afghans, roughly, have been granted temporary protected status.

Safe haven for Afghan refugees - Pakistan

Most Afghan refugees do not choose to live in the West.

Despite not being a signatory to either the 1967 Protocol or the 1951 Refugee Convention, Pakistan has long hosted the majority of Afghan refugees due to its 1,640-mile land border with Afghanistan. After the war started in 1979 as a result of the rising of the Mujahideen, 1.5 million Afghans fled their country two years prior to the Soviet invasion. By 1986, Pakistan and Iran had received close to five million Afghan refugees.

The UNHCR, or United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, has repatriated approximately 3.2 million Afghans since March 2002; but, as of April 2021, the UN claimed that more than 1.4 million Afghan refugees were still living in Pakistan because of continued conflict and high unemployment.

Internally displaced Afghans

There are still a sizable number of displaced Afghans who do not have permanent residence. According to the United Nations refugee agency, the violence has caused more than 500,000 people to be displaced thus far in 2021. Approximately 80% of the nearly 25,000 Afghans forced to evacuate since the end of May are women and children.

At least 3.5 million Afghans were still living outside of their home country as of 2021, before the current crisis, as a result of political upheaval, poverty, the climatic issue, and a lack of job opportunities.

Situation now

According to the AP's most recent statistics, the 20-year Afghan war has claimed the lives of more than 47,000 Afghan civilians and at least 66,000 members of the Afghan military and police.

In recent years, the nation's security situation has gotten worse. The Cost of War Project at Brown University reports that improvised explosive devices, crossfire, assassinations by militant groups like the Taliban, nighttime raids by US and NATO forces, and U.S.-led airstrikes have all resulted in an increase in the number of Afghan deaths.

Civilian casualties have increased by 29 per cent in the first quarter of 2021 compared to the same time in 2020 even before the Taliban took control of Kabul. According to a United Nations report from July 26, 2021, child casualties had increased by 23 per cent and the number of women killed and injured had increased by 37 per cent when compared to the first quarter of 2020.

Concern for the safety of Afghan women and girls, members of ethnic minorities, journalists, public servants, teachers, and human rights activists has increased since the Taliban took control of Kabul. There are still many Afghans outside of Kabul and far from any airport who are yearning to go.

The following nations have also committed to temporarily accepting a small number of Afghans: Albania, Qatar, Costa Rica, Mexico, Chile, Ecuador, and Colombia. Uganda has agreed to temporarily house 2,000 Afghans in addition to the 1.5 million refugees it already supports, most of whom are South Sudanese.

In the end, the majority of Afghans who are able to leave the country will do so on foot into Pakistan and Iran rather than through aircraft. The major host country for the most recent Afghan refugees will likely once again be Pakistan, which is already under pressure from its own economic and political problems.

But the majority of uprooted Afghans will stay inside Afghanistan's borders because crossing the border in that area is challenging and dangerous. The next chapter in the history of the nation will be shaped by their significant humanitarian needs, economic and political difficulties, security worries, and resistance to the Taliban.

The Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission's Shaharzad Akbar described the situation as "failure upon failure." × United States’ stance The United States Refugee Act of 1980 established a strict vetting process and standardised the procedures for admitting refugees—people who have fled war, violence, conflict, or persecution—to the country. In London, police reported that till now 12 arrests have been made. Five police officers were "severely injured" as protesters attempted to storm through barricades surrounding the embassy. Several were injured as masonry, bottles, and other objects were thrown. At least five people were severely hurt.

Iran's foreign minister Hossein Amirabdollahian has been quoted by Iran's semi-official ISNA news agency voicing his displeasure over American support to women-led protests in Iran. The minister said that USA's support to protests is contrary to it diplomatic stance with Iran.

"Peaceful protest is the right of every nation. However, the U.S. involvement in Iran's affairs and support to 'rioters' in implementing their destabilisation project is in clear conflict with Washington's diplomatic messages to Iran regarding the necessity of a nuclear deal and establishing stability in the region," Amirabdollahian said.

The protests are taking place when Iran is engaged in negotiations with world powers and indirectly with the US for revival of 2015 nuclear deal. Iran expresses displeasure over US support for Mahsa Amini stir, calls protesters 'rioters'

The official death toll in the deadly anti-Hijab protests in Iran has risen to 41. Iran Human Rights association said that nearly a dozen more than the actual number have died in the protests that begun over Mahsa Amini's death. Iran's President Ebrahim Raisi said that they must deal decisively with protests which have erupted in the country's 31 provinces.

Iran must deal decisively with protests which have swept the country after the custodial death of a woman detained by the Islamic Republic's morality police, President Ebrahim Raisi said on Saturday.

Iran must deal decisively with protests which have swept the country after the custodial death of a woman detained by the Islamic Republic's morality police, President Ebrahim Raisi said on Saturday. At least 41 people have been killed in the week-long unrest, state television said on Saturday. It said that the toll was based on its own count and official figures were yet to be released. Protests have erupted in most of the country's 31 provinces. State media quoted Raisi on Saturday as saying that Iran must "deal decisively with those who oppose the country's security and tranquility." Raisi was speaking by telephone to the family of a member of the Basij volunteer force killed while taking part in the crackdown on unrest in the northeastern city of Mashhad. The president "stressed the necessity to distinguish between protest and disturbing public order and security, and called the events a riot," state media reported. The protests broke out in northwestern Iran a week ago at the funeral of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman who died after falling into coma following her detention in Tehran by morality police enforcing hijab rules on women's dress. Her death has reignited anger over issues including restrictions on personal freedoms in Iran, the strict dress codes for women, and an economy reeling from sanctions. Women have played a prominent role in the protests, waving and burning their veils. Some have publicly cut their hair as furious crowds called for the fall of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The protests are the largest to sweep the country since demonstrations over fuel prices in 2019 when Reuters reported 1,500 people were killed in a crackdown on protesters — the bloodiest confrontation in the Islamic Republic's history. WATCH | Anti-Hijab protests spread to 80 cities in Iran × On Friday, state-organised rallies took place in several Iranian cities to counter the anti-government protests, and the army promised to confront "the enemies" behind the unrest. In neighbouring Iraq, dozens of Iraqi and Iranian Kurds rallied outside the United Nations compound in the northern city of Erbil on Saturday, carrying placards with Amini's photograph and chanting "death to the dictator," referring to Khamenei. State television in Iran, which has accused armed exiled Iranian Kurdish dissidents of involvement in the unrest, said Iranian Revolutionary Guards had fired artillery on bases of Kurdish opposition groups in the Kurdish region of northern Iraq. At least three times this week, mobile Internet has been disrupted in Iran, the NetBlocks watchdog has reported. Activists say the move is intended to prevent video footage of the violence from reaching the world. On Saturday, NetBlocks said Microsoft's Skype video calling app was now restricted, the latest such measure after platforms including Instagram, WhatsApp, and LinkedIn were targeted. In an effort to help sustain internet connection, the United States is making exceptions to its sanctions regime on Iran — a move which Tehran said on Saturday was in line with Washington's hostile stance. Rights group Amnesty International said protesters face a "spiralling deadly response from security forces" and called for an independent United Nations investigation. On the night of September 21, shootings by security forces left at least 19 people dead, including three children, it said. “The rising death toll is an alarming indication of just how ruthless the authorities’ assault on human life has been under the darkness of the internet shutdown," Amnesty said. The activist Twitter account 1500tasvir carried videos of protests in Tehran's western district of Sattarkhan showing protesters gathered at a square chanting "don't be afraid we all in this together" late on Saturday with a motorcycle apparently belonging to riot police burning in the background. A video posted on social media showed a demonstration in the northern city of Babol with youths trying to take off portraits of Khamenei and Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic, at the gate of a university while bystanders cheered them on and shouted "death to the dictator". State-organised rallies took place in several Iranian cities on Friday to counter nationwide anti-government unrest triggered by the death of a woman in police custody, with marchers calling for the execution of "rioters".

The pro-government marches followed the strongest warning yet from authorities when the army said it would confront "the enemies" behind the unrest - a move that could signal the kind of crackdown that has crushed protests in the past.

The crowds condemned the anti-government protesters as "Israel's soldiers", live state television coverage showed.

"Offenders of the Koran must be executed," they chanted.

The Twitter account 1500tasvir, which has 117,000 followers, reported heavy clashes in the central city of Isfahan between anti-government protesters and security forces.

It also showed anti-government street protests in several parts of the capital and in Shahin Shahr in central Iran.

State TV said 35 people had been killed in the unrest so far based on its own count and an official figure would be announced.

Many Iranians are fuming over the case of Mahsa Amini, 22, who died last week after being arrested by the morality police for wearing "unsuitable attire".

The morality police, attached to Iran's law enforcement, are tasked with ensuring the respect of Islamic morals as described by the country's clerical authorities.

Amini's death has reignited anger over issues including restrictions on personal freedoms in Iran, strict dress codes for women and an economy reeling from sanctions.

The anti-government protests are not expected to pose an immediate threat to Iran's clerical rulers, who have security forces which have put down one protest after another in recent years, analysts say.

But the protests have clearly made the authorities nervous. Women, who have played a prominent role, have challenged the country's Islamic dress code, waving and burning their veils.

Some have publicly cut their hair as furious crowds called for the fall of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

'OUR RED LINE'

Iran's police chief Hossein Ashtari weighed in with tough words in an attempt to stop the protests.

"The people's security is our red line," he told state TV. "Those involved in sabotage and creating insecurity based on directives from outside the country should know that they will be strongly dealt with."

The army's message on Friday, seen as a warning to protesters, read: "These desperate actions are part of the evil strategy of the enemy to weaken the Islamic regime."

The military said it would "confront the enemies' various plots in order to ensure security and peace for the people who are being unjustly assaulted".

Intelligence Minister Mahmoud Alavi on Friday also warned "seditionists" that their "dream of defeating religious values and the great achievements of the revolution will never be realized", according to the AsrIran website.

Friday's pro-government demonstrations showed the strength of the Islamic Republic, President Ebrahim Raisi said, adding that turmoil would not be tolerated.

"The people's presence (in the marches) today, is the power and the honour of the Islamic Republic," Raisi, facing the biggest protests since 2019, said on live television after returning from New York where he attended the United Nations General Assembly.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres met with Raisi in New York on Thursday and raised human rights issues, a U.N. spokesperson said.

The United Nations is concerned "about reports of peaceful protests being met with excessive use of force leading to dozens of deaths and injuries", spokesperson Stephane Dujarric told reporters.

HACK ATTACKS, ARRESTS

Human rights group Hengaw said a general strike was held on Friday in Oshnavieh, Javanroud, Sardasht and other towns in the northwest where many of Iran's up to 10 million Kurds live.

Internet blockage watchdog NetBlocks said mobile internet had been disrupted in Iran for a third time.

Twitter accounts linked to Anonymous "hacktivists" voiced support for the protests and said they had attacked 100 Iranian websites, including several belonging to the government.

Websites of the central bank, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several state-affiliated news agencies have been disrupted in recent days.

Iran's clerical rulers fear a revival of the protests that erupted in 2019 over gasoline price rises, the bloodiest in the Islamic Republic's history. Reuters reported 1,500 people were killed.

Rights groups such as Hengaw and HRANA, lawyers and social media users reported widespread arrests of students and activists at their homes by security forces in an apparent effort to curb protests.

Majid Tavakoli, a student leader turned human rights activist, was detained overnight, his brother Mohsen said.

"They raided the home and arrested Majid while he was asleep ... We are unable to do anything. Please spread the word," Mohsen Tavakoli tweeted.

As the Iranian government has imposed restrictions on internet access in the backdrop of protests across the country over the death a 22 years old woman in the custody of morality police, the Joe Biden administration on Friday issued guidance to relax sanctions on its internet services in the west Asian country. Reportedly, the US treasury department relaxed the internet rules despite the US still having a plethora of sanctions imposed on Iran. “As courageous Iranians take to the streets to protest the death of Mahsa Amini, the United States is redoubling its support for the free flow of information to the Iranian people,” said deputy treasury secretary Wally Adeyemo “With these changes, we are helping the Iranian people be better equipped to counter the government’s efforts to surveil and censor them,” he further added.
