It's been over 40 days since the death of Mahsa Amini in Iran. What started as a funeral protest has now ballooned into an anti-government movement, protesters along with Amini's family held a memorial procession wherein thousands of people were out on the streets displaying their anger.

The United States has claimed that Russia might be advising Iran on how to suppress protests sparked by the custodial death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini.

Briefing the reporters on Wednesday, Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that the White House was "concerned that Moscow may be advising Iran on best practices to manage protests, drawing on... extensive experience in suppressing".

Later, John Kirby, spokesman for the White House National Security Council, also levelled a similar allegation but did not provide any evidence to base his accusation.

"They may be considering some sort of support to crack down on Iran's protesters," he said.

"We see signs that they may be considering the ability to train. Sadly, Russia has experience," he added.

White House Press Secretary Karine also reiterated an earlier claim that Iran is helping Russia in waging war against Ukraine, with the supply of its drones.

“The evidence that Iran is helping Russia rage its war against Ukraine is clear and it is public. And Iran and Russia are growing closer the more isolated they become. Our message to Iran is very, very clear – stop killing your people and stop sending weapons to Russia to help kill Ukrainians.”

The allegation of the Kremlin’s involvement in Iran protest comes on the same day the Biden administration imposed a slew of additional sanctions against Iranian officials involved in the ongoing crackdown on nationwide protests in Iran, including the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ intelligence organisation and the IRGC’s deputy commander for operations, reports CNN.

US State Department’s spokesperson Vedant Patel said that the US would continue to support the protest that has swept across over 100 cities since the death of Amini, who was arrested by Iran's morality for violating the Islamic dress code.

"We will continue to look at the tools at our disposal and take action to support the people of Iran as they peacefully protest for their human rights in the face of brutal repression."

Mahsa Amini death: US believes Russia advising Iran on how to suppress protest

A holy site in Iran has come under a deadly attack, at least 15 people have lost their lives and ISIS has claimed responsibility for the same.

Iran shrine killing: One gunman arrested during the attack

Clashes erupt in Mahsa Amini's hometown, Washington imposes new sanctions on Iran

Islamic State terror group has claimed responsibility for the Shia holy shrine gun attack in southern Iran that killed at least 15 people and injured over 40 on Wednesday.

Three IS terrorists opened fire on worshippers at the Shah Cheragh shrine in Shiraz city, "killing at least 20 Shiites and wounded dozens of others", the radical Sunni Muslim jihadist group said in a statement via Telegram channels.

According to local reports, the attack was carried out by three armed men in the evening. The enforcement agencies have caught two of the terrorists while the hunt is on for the third one.

Earlier state-run Nour news reported that the attackers were not Iranian nationals.

According to Fars News Agency, one woman and two children were among those killed in Shiraz, a popular destination for pilgrimages and tourism.

It is a very rare incident as the last such attack to take place in the city was in April 2008 when a bomb planted in a mosque killed 14 people.

Condemning the attack, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi vowed “regrettable response” against those responsible for the Shiraz attack.

“Experience shows that Iran’s enemies, after failing to create a split in the nation’s united ranks, take revenge through violence and terror. This evil will definitely not go unanswered, and the security and law enforcement agencies will teach a lesson to those who designed the attack,” Raisi said, according to Tasnim news agency.

The Wednesday attack comes at a time when the nation is gripped by street protests against the regime over the custodial death of 23-year-old Mhasa Amini.

According to rights groups, more than 200 protesters have been killed and thousands have been arrested.

Iran has been accused of selling Shahed Kamikaze drones to Russia. Reports say they will send Russia missiles as well. Ghadi Francis tells you more on The West Asia Post

The West Asia Post | Iran accused of selling weapons to Russia

After repeated denial by Russia and Iran regarding the supply of arms, Israel President Isaac Herzog on Tuesday said his country had shared 'intelligence' with the US to prove the deals had indeed taken place.

After repeated denial by Russia and Iran regarding the supply of arms, Israel President Isaac Herzog on Tuesday said his country had shared 'intelligence' with the US to prove the deals had indeed taken place. Herzog said Iran supplied drones that Russia has used in recent times to create havoc in Ukraine. The Israeli president made the statement during a meeting with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, in Washington. According to Herzog's office, Israel shared images assessed that show similarity between the drones downed in Ukraine and parts tested by Iran in December last year. It added that both images have similarities to the drones displayed at an exposition in Iran in 2014. Read more: Why is West bothered about Iran sending drones to Russia? "Iranian weapons play a key role in destabilizing our world, and the international community must learn its lessons, now and in the future," said Herzog. He added that the "world must speak with Iran in the same language. A tough, united and uncompromising language." The eight-month-long war has depleted Russia's weapon arsenal. It is now looking for alternatives to have them filled. After Ukraine regained significant ground by pushing Russian troops, forcing Putin to call for partial mobilisation, Moscow closed the gap by bombarding Ukrainian cities and towns with deadly Iranian drones, according to news reports. Earlier this week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed that Russia had ordered around 2,000 drones from Iran. "The disgusting sound of Iranian drones is heard in our skies every night. Russia ordered about 2,000 'Shaheds' from Iran," said Zelensky Read more: Russia-Ukraine war: Zelensky claims Moscow ordered some 2,000 drones from Iran Moreover, Iran is expected to deliver short-range ballistic missiles viz. Fateh-110 and its advanced version such as Zolfaghar to Kremlin, per a report by the Washington Post. However, Iran has rejected the claims saying it is not sending any weapons. "We believe that the arming of each side of the crisis will prolong the war. We have not considered and do not consider war to be the right path either in Ukraine or in Afghanistan, Syria and Yemen," said Amir-Abdollahian, the Iranian foreign minister. On the other hand, Kremlin said that it had no knowledge of its army using such weapons and Moscow accused the West of seeking to put "pressure" on Tehran with the allegations. A nonagenarian Iranian man who earned the “world’s dirtiest” moniker has reportedly died, months after he took his first shower in more than 70 years.

According to the Iranian news agency IRNA, 94-year-old Amou Haji or “Uncle Haji” died on Sunday in Dezhgah village in the southern province of Fars.

There have been various reasons why he avoided baths for more than half a century.

While local officials claimed that Haji, who was single, avoided showering over fears of "getting sick", the local villagers, on the other hand, believed that the hermit had undergone “emotional setbacks in his youth” that might have caused some sort of a trauma that led him to refuse to wash, even by water.

One time, his neighbours tried to bathe him in the local river, but after realising the purpose of the trip, Haji threw himself out of the car.

But "for the first time a few months ago, villagers had taken him to a bathroom to wash," after he fell ill, IRNA reported.

He would often be found roaming around the streets covered in soot and living in a cinder-block shack, which was built by local villagers.

The 94-year-old hermit would survive by eating rotting carcasses as he believed that fresh food could make him sick.

He would smoke a pipe filled with animal excrement, the Tehran Times reported in 2014. And was also pictured smoking several cigarettes at a time.

According to local reports, Haji’s funeral is scheduled for Tuesday night in Farashband City, Fars.

Following Haji’s death, the unofficial title of “world’s dirtiest man” would go to a 67-year-old Indian man from western Maharashtra state who also had not bathed for more than 30 years.

Iran has denied several times that it provided Russia with drones, missiles and other military hardware to use against Ukraine in the ongoing war, which has escalated geopolitical tensions.

Iran has denied several times that it provided Russia with drones, missiles and other military hardware to use against Ukraine in the ongoing war, which has escalated geopolitical tensions. The Russia-Ukraine war started this February 24, reviving fears of nuclear doomsday after 60 years. The world averted possible nuclear destruction during the Cuban missile crisis in 1962, but it should remember that we don't have John F Kennedy this time. The eight-month-old Ukraine war has entered a new phase, with Russia annexing regions and Kyiv on the other hand ramping up a counter-offensive. People are dying and millions are struggling amid the food crisis, and rising oil prices, but politics is at its highest with Iran lately taking centrestage. Row over Iranian drones The US and other Western countries have alleged that Iranian military staff had been deployed in Crimea to assist Russian forces using Iranian-made drones to attack Ukraine. The West slapped sanctions on Tehran in response. In fact, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky even said that Moscow's use of drones built in Iran in recent operations against his nation was a sign of the Kremlin's "military and political bankruptcy." He also said that "strategically, it will not help them [Russia] anyway." Recently, Britain and France said that if Iran is supplying armed drones to Russia for the Ukraine war, then it is a breach of Tehran's obligations under the 2015 nuclear deal. Russia and Iran have denied the claims as the Kremlin said that it had no knowledge of its army using such weapons. Meanwhile, Tehran said that it was ready for talks with Kyiv to clarify the "baseless" claims. But even if Iran is supplying weapons and drones, why is it bothering the West so much? In the ongoing war, the US and some other Western countries have provided Ukraine with advanced weapons and military equipment. Such backing is one of the reasons behind Ukraine's incredible resistance. Similarly, Russia's allies also ought to extend help to Moscow. But to what extent they can do it, remains to be seen. Recently, France, Germany and Britain urged the United Nations to probe Iran's possible breach of UN Security Council resolution 2231, which endorsed a 2015 resolution of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on Iran's nuclear programme. It sets out an inspection process and schedule in exchange for granting sanctions relief on Iran. But the deal was jeopardised since then-president Donald Trump withdrew the United States from it in 2018. Although Iran denies sending weapons (drones, missiles, etc) to Russia for war, it also asserts that it can do so since the restrictions on arms sales contained in the 2015 Iran nuclear deal expired in 2020. When it comes to arms sales to other countries, there are certain laws and regulations established by the United Nations. The Arms Trade Treaty is the first international agreement to regulate the transfer of conventional weapons that is legally binding and has ever been negotiated at the United Nations. But Why Iran would want to help Russia? Besides being an ally, the Islamic Republic's clerical leaders are keen to strengthen strategic relations with Russia as there are fears that an emerging, US-backed Gulf Arab-Israeli bloc may shift the Middle East balance of power further away from Iran. Due to the war-fueled high oil prices, Iran is betting that with Russia's support it could pressure Washington to offer concessions for the revival of its 2015 nuclear deal with world powers. Iran may think that a real partnership with a superpower that supports anti-Western ideologies and isn't hesitant to advocate for them on the battlefield is a calculated move to demonstrate that Iran is not alone. The actions by Iran might lead to more sanctions by the West. But the question is, should other country-specific sanctions stop Tehran from exercising its right to engage in military trade? Why is West bothered about Iran sending drones to Russia?

Iran's Atomic Energy Organisation on Sunday (October 23) said that email server of its subsidiary was hacked in a "foreign" attack aimed at drawing "attention". The development has taken place as the country tackles with mass protests triggered by the custodial death of 22-year-old Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini.

Amini died in custody after she was detained by Iran's morality police over 'inappropriate attire'. The nationwide protests her death sparked have seen people even calling on the Islamic regime to step away from power.

A group called Black Reward on Friday issued an ultimatum on Twitter, threatening to release documents on Tehran's nuclear programme unless all "political prisoners, prisoners of conscience and people arrested in the recent protests" were released within 24 hours.

Iran's nuclear agency acknowledged the hacking but the subsidiary downplayed the importance of leaked documents.

"Unauthorised access by a source originating from a specific foreign country to the email system of this company led to the publication of the content of some emails on social media," it said in a statement.Material on social media said to be released by the group on Saturday included a short clip from a purported nuclear site in Iran, as well as documents containing agreements, maps and payslips.

The hacking group claimed it leaked 50 gigabytes of internal emails, contracts and construction plans related to Iran’s Russian-backed nuclear power plant in Bushehr on its Telegram channel.

Iran has previously accused the United States and Israel for cyberattacks that have impaired the country’s infrastructure.

“These illegal efforts out of desperation are aimed at attracting public attention,” the organization said.

The protests in Iran first focused on state-mandated hijab for women but transformed into a serious challenge to the country’s ruling clerics. Protesters now call for the downfall of the Islamic Republic itself.

Iran again rejects Ukraine drone claims, slams West over 'provocative approaches'

Tesla CEO and SpaceX founder Elon Musk is in talks with the White House to provide satellite broadband internet service via Starlink in Iran, says a report by CNN.

Tesla CEO and SpaceX founder Elon Musk is in talks with the White House to provide satellite broadband internet service via Starlink in Iran, says a report by CNN. The Biden administration is looking for ways to support the masses in Iran who have taken to the streets to protest against the government, ever since the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini. Amini was found dead in mysterious circumstances with the Iranian public blaming the country's morality police for killing her in custody. “We have our foot on the gas to do everything we possibly can to support the aspirations of the Iranian people. That is our policy, period. At the same time, it is truly an Iranian movement led by young girls and spreading to other aspects of society. And we do not want to in any way eclipse their movement," a senior administrator was quoted as saying by the publication. “We are interested in finding ways to ensure that the Iranian people can have access to the internet on their phones and everywhere else. And so Starlink is one option, but it is not the only option," added the official. However, other senior officials were apprehensive about having Musk on board for another major theater after Ukraine. “He’s a loose cannon we can never predict,” said a senior US defence official. Read more: Elon Musk withdraws proposal to Pentagon seeking funds for Starlink As reported by WION, the US treasury department last month relaxed the internet rules in Iran despite the US still having a plethora of sanctions imposed on it. “As courageous Iranians take to the streets to protest the death of Mahsa Amini, the United States is redoubling its support for the free flow of information to the Iranian people,” said deputy treasury secretary Wally Adeyemo. “With these changes, we are helping the Iranian people be better equipped to counter the government’s efforts to surveil and censor them,” he added. Internet access is often curbed in Iran to stop protesters from posting videos on social media. In 2019, the government shut down the internet for about a week to stifle fuel protests which turned political, sparking the bloodiest crackdown in the 40-year history of the Islamic Republic. Musk and Starlink Moreover, the talks between Musk and the Biden administration come a few days after the Starlink boss demanded that the Pentagon fund his company for providing satellite broadband service in the war-ravaged country of Ukraine. SpaceX has already withdrawn its request for funding — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) October 17, 2022 × Not too long ago, Musk said that SpaceX, the company which operates Starlink could not fund the internet network in Ukraine indefinitely. "SpaceX is not asking to recoup past expenses, but also cannot fund the existing system indefinitely *and* send several thousand more terminals that have data usage up to 100X greater than typical households. This is unreasonable," Musk tweeted. Read more: Musk says 'unreasonable' to expect Starlink to fund services in Ukraine indefinitely (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Iranian climber Elnaz Rekabi, who caused controversy by competing in an international contest without a headscarf, has returned to Iran to cheering supporters, reiterating in comments to state media she had climbed without a hijab unintentionally. Footage had shown Rekabi, 33, scaling a wall without her head covered while representing Iran at a competition in South Korea, at a time of unprecedented protests in Iran over the death in custody of a young woman detained by morality police for "inappropriate attire."

In comments to state TV upon her arrival in Tehran, Rekabi said she had returned in "full health" and apologised to "the people of Iran for the turbulence and worry that I created", her head covered by a baseball cap and a hood as she spoke. “The struggle that I had with wearing my shoes and preparing my gear made me forget about the proper hijab that I should have had, and I went to the wall and ascended," she added.

In her televised comments Rekabi, who came fourth in the competition, denied she had been unreachable for 48 hours, and said the team had returned to Iran as planned. She said she had no plan to quit the national team.
