The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said on Wednesday (May 31) that Iran has apparently significantly increased its stockpile of enriched uranium in recent months, continuing its nuclear escalation.

However, IAEA has received a "possible explanation" from Iran over nuclear material at an undeclared site and has decided to close the file, news agency AFP reported citing a report it has seen.

In its report, IAEA said that the estimated stockpile of enriched uranium in Tehran had reached more than 23 times what was set as the limit.

The nuclear deal was signed in 2015 and Iran agreed to a pact with six major powers (China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, the United States + Germany) to limit its nuclear programme. It was harder for Iran to obtain a weapon in return for relief from economic sanctions.

But former US President Donald Trump reneged on the deal in 2018 and reimposed harsh sanctions on Iran. Trump's decision led Tehran to start violating the agreement's nuclear limits about a year later.

But in recent time, there has been negotiations and talks to revive the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), but so far, there has not been any breakthrough.

The limit in the 2015 deal was 202.8 kilograms, but the report by AFP mentioned that Iran's total enriched uranium stockpile was estimated at 4,744.5 kilograms (10,459 pounds) as of May 13.

According to the report, Iran is continuing its enrichment of uranium to levels higher than the 3.67 per cent limit in the deal.

The stockpile of uranium enriched up to 20 per cent is now believed to be 470.9 kilograms — up 36.2 kg since the last report in February — while the amount enriched up to 60 per cent stands at 114.1 kilograms, an increase of 26.6 kg.

Notably, enrichment levels of around 90 per cent are required for use in a nuclear weapon.

Meanwhile, the report seen by AFP has come days before the board of governors of the IAEA is due to meet to review progress in addressing the watchdog's remaining concerns.

And the IAEA said in a separate report that it has decided to close the file relating to the presence of nuclear material at one undeclared site after receiving a "possible explanation" from Iran.

The UN nuclear watchdog "has no additional questions... and the matter is no longer outstanding at this stage", the report said of the site at Marivan in Abedeh County.

A new border dispute is brewing in Asia and this is between the Taliban-controlled Afghanistan and Iran. Now what started off as a water dispute is now affecting diplomacy and beyond. Watch to know more in this news report.

The Taliban and Iranian forces exchanged heavy gunfire on the Afghan border on Saturday (May 27), killing and wounding troops, escalating tension between Kabul and Tehran amid a dispute over water rights. According to the IRNA news agency, Iran's Deputy Police Chief Gen. Qassem Rezaei accused the Taliban of opening fire on the border of Iran's Sistan and Balochistan provinces and the Afghan province of Nimroz. Citing Iranian police, the IRNA said that two border guards were killed. The agency further added the Milak border crossing with Afghanistan, a major trade route, was closed until further notice. Afghanistan accuses Iran of shooting first The Taliban-led Afghanistan administration accused Iran of shooting first. Interior Ministry spokesperson Abdul Nafi Takor said Saturday's fighting killed two people, one each from Afghanistan and Iran, and wounded others. Afghan Defence Ministry spokesperson Enayatullah Khawarazmi said that the Taliban considered dialogue to be a reasonable way for any problem, adding, "Making excuses for war and negative actions is not in the interest of any of the parties." Saturday's fighting comes after Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi earlier this month warned Afghanistan not to violate Tehran's water rights to the Helmand River. The right to water from the river recently became a controversial issue between the two countries. Raisi said the Taliban should ensure that Tehran's water rights of the river were based on international treaties. On Thursday, President Raisi said that the Taliban should immediately provide Iran with its share of water. Earlier on Saturday, the Taliban’s Acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi met with an Iranian envoy to Afghanistan to discuss the Helmand River water rights. The news agency IRNA acknowledged the meeting saying “that issues between the two countries will be better resolved through dialogue.” WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Iran successfully test-launched a ballistic missile with a potential 2,000km range on Thursday, state media said, two days after the chief of Israel’s armed forces raised the prospect of “action” against Tehran over its nuclear program.

Iran successfully test-launches ballistic missile

Iran on Thursday claimed that it has successfully test-fired a ballistic missile with a potential range of 2,000 kilometres (1,242 miles), which, it said, can cover the bases of its arch-rival Israel and the United States in the region.

The announcement came two days after Israel's chief of armed forces raised the prospect of "action" against Tehran over its nuclear programme.

The long-range missile dubbed Kheibar—which is the latest version of the Khorramshahr and Iran’s longest-range missile to date — was unveiled alongside a replica of the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem’s Old City, in a live broadcast on state television.

According to state media, Kheibar is “a liquid fuel missile with a range of 2,000 kilometres and a 1,500-kilogram warhead.”

The speed of the tactical missile is said to have the ability to “reach Mach 16 outside the atmosphere and Mach 8 inside the atmosphere.”

The name draws references to the ancient town of Khaybar, which is located in modern-day Saudi Arabia. The place is known for a decisive 7th-century battle in which the army of Prophet Muhammad defeated thousands of Jewish residents, Iran’s state news agency IRNA reported.

Activists accuse the authorities of suppressing the protests with a crackdown that has left over 500 dead, according to Norway-based NGO Iran Human Rights.

After the rise in tensions over Iran's water rights from the Helmand River in recent days, Tehran has now said that Taliban-ruled Afghanistan should clarify the issue of Iran's water rights within a month. According to a report by Tolo News on Saturday (May 20), Hassan Kazemi Qomi, Iran's ambassador to Afghanistan, told Iranian media that if the Taliban want Kabul to move towards peace and stability, it should have constructive interaction with its neighbours.

“If there was water and the Taliban did not provide it to the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran, then it is clear how it should act on this issue, which is one of the basic rights of the Iranian nation, and it should happen during this one month,” Qomi said and asked Afghanistan to take practical steps in this regard.

“Taliban officials know that they must engage in constructive interaction with their neighbours if they want to have a strong, stable government in their country that includes all of the people's representatives and the country moves towards peace, stability, independence, territorial integrity, and prosperity," the ambassador added.

Officials from Iran have always stressed the significance of the implementation of the 1973 Helmand River treaty between Iran and Afghanistan. As per the treaty, Afghanistan is committed to sharing water from the river at the rate of 26 cubic metres of water per second, or 850 million cubic metres per annum.

The right to water from the river recently became a controversial issue between the two countries.

Before Ambassador Qomi, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi had said the Taliban should ensure that Tehran's water rights of the river were based on international treaties. On Thursday, President Raisi said that the Taliban should immediately provide Iran with its share of water.

“We will not allow the rights of our people to be violated,” he added. The president also urged the Taliban to allow Iranian hydrologists to check the water levels of the river.

Authorities in Iran on Friday (May 19) executed three men over protests that erupted over Mahsa Amini's custodial death, said Iran's judiciary. The men were convicted of violence against the Islamic republic's security forces.

Majid Kazemi, Saleh Mirhashemi and Saeed Yaghoubi were convicted of "moharebeh", or "war against God", for drawing a gun during a demonstration in the central city of Isfahan, leading to the deaths of three members of the security forces, the judiciary's Mizan Online news website said.

Twenty-two-year-old Mahsa Amini was detained by Iran's morality police over her 'inappropriate' attire she died in custody on September 16 last year. This had sparked huge, nationwide protests that rocked the Iranian regime.

During the protests, which Tehran generally labelled as foreign-instigated "riots", thousands of Iranians were arrested and hundreds killed including dozens of security forces.

Friday's hangings bring the total of Iranians executed in connection with the protests to seven.

All three were arrested in November and were handed death sentences in January.

They were also charged with membership of "illegal groups with the intention of disrupting national security and collusion leading to crimes against internal security", Mizan said.

Mizan added that "evidence and documents in the case and the clear statements made by the accused" showed that "the shootings carried out by these three people led to the martyrdom of three security forces".

The cases had caused international concern including in Australia where some of Kazemi's family live.

Mohammad Hashemi, cousin of Kazemi had written an open letter to Penny Wong, Australia's Foreign Minister and asked for her support.

"Majid is only 30 years old. He is a compassionate, loving, and strong-willed person. He, like many other Iranians, participated in peaceful demonstrations to raise his voice and demand change," Hashemi wrote in the letter, published on the petition website change.org.

Large number of executions each year

Iran is known for executing more people each year than any other nation except China, according to Amnesty International. Just last week, Iranian authorities carried out executions of four prisoners. This prompted international condemnation.

There has been a surge in executions since the start of the year. This has alarmed campaigners.

Norway-based Iran Human Rights (IHR) and Paris-based Together against the Death Penalty, said in a joint report in April that the authorities hanged 75 per cent more people in 2022 than in the previous year.

At least 582 people were executed in Iran last year, the highest number of executions in the country since 2015 and well above the 333 recorded in 2021, the two groups said.

Large number of executions each year Iran is known for executing more people each year than any other nation except China, according to Amnesty International. The United States said on Monday (May 15) that Russia and Iran are "expanding their unprecedented defence partnership". The Ukraine war prompted the West to impose sanctions on Moscow, and after that, Russia ramped up ties with Iran.

Ever since the war started, claims and counterclaims have been made over the use of Iranian drones in Ukraine, but both, Russia and Iran, have denied the claims as the Kremlin once said that it had no knowledge of its army using such weapons. Meanwhile, Tehran had said that it was ready for talks with Kyiv to clarify the claims.

But US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters that "we are using the tools at our disposal to expose and disrupt these activities and we are prepared to do more."

US intelligence stated that Russia, one of the world's top military powers, has been obliged to rely on Iran for supplies as it suffers battlefield losses in its invasion of Ukraine.

Kirby highlighted that Moscow needs to acquire more sophisticated unmanned military drones as a key part of the growing cooperation.

He told reporters, "Interactions between Iran and Russia in matters regarding the selling of advanced weapons, especially more advanced UAVs, are now continuing."

Kirby added that "this is a full-scale defence partnership that is harmful to Ukraine, to the region in the Middle East, and to the international community". He mentioned that further sanctions would soon be announced.

He said, "We are using the tools at our disposal to expose and disrupt these activities and we are prepared to do more. In the coming days, we will be announcing additional designations against those involved."

Iran executed two people on Monday who were convicted of blasphemy, said the judiciary.

The two men were hanged to death in the morning over 'burning the Quran' and 'insulting the Prophet of Islam' at Arak Prison in central Iran.

The judiciary's Mizan Online website reported that Sadrollah Fazeli Zare and Yousef Mehrdad were involved in crimes, including insulting the religion of Islam, the prophet and other sanctities.

The two were running dozens of online anti-religion platforms dedicated to the hatred of Islam, Mizan reported.

One of the accused, in March 2021, had allegedly confessed to publishing content on his social media account, admitting to the insults that were committed, it added.

The two men were detained in 2020 and were condemned for running a Telegram channel called "Criticism of Superstition and Religion", BBC reported, citing Iran's Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA).

Human rights groups condemned Iran for failing to provide fair trials and insulting freedom of expression.

"The execution of Yousef and Sadrollah for 'insulting the Prophet' is not only a cruel act by a medieval regime, but it is also a serious insult to the freedom of expression," said Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, director of Norway-based group Iran Human Rights.

"These executions must be a turning point in the relations between the Islamic Republic and countries respecting the freedom of expression," he added. "Lack of a strong reaction by the international community sends a green light to the Islamic Republic and their ideological allies worldwide."

Meanwhile, United Nations experts have called on majority Shi'ite Muslim Iran to stop persecution and harassment of religious minorities, highlighting an Iranian policy of targeting dissenting beliefs or religious practices, including Christian converts and atheists.

Iran on Saturday executed a Swedish-Iranian dissident Habib Farajollah Chaab for being "corrupt on earth," and allegedly leading an Arab separatist group accused of multiple attacks, including a 2018 one that killed 25 people.

Chaab, as per Reuters, was sentenced to death for his alleged offence, i.e., being "corrupt on earth," a capital offence that in Iran carries the death penalty under the nation's strict Islamic laws.

"The death sentence for Habib Chaab... nicknamed Habib Asyud, the head of the Harakat al-Nidal terrorist group... was carried out today, Saturday morning," reported the judiciary's Mizan Online website.

"He was hanged," it added.

The Swedish-Iranian national, as per AFP, had been held in Iran since October 2020 after vanishing during a visit to Turkey. According to Iran, in 2020 its forces 'detained' the alleged Arab separatist group leader in Turkey. From there, he was taken to Tehran.

He was brought to trial by Iran in 2022, wherein he was charged with leading the Harakat al-Nidal, or Arab Struggle Movement, for the Liberation of Ahwaz. The outfit, as per reports, seeks a separate state in the oil-rich Khuzestan province in southwestern Iran.

The group is also blamed for plotting and carrying out "numerous bombings and terrorist operations" including one on a military parade in 2018, in which 25 people were killed, and almost 250 were wounded.

In March, six other members of Harakat al-Nidal were sentenced to death over attacks carried out by "orders of their European leaders," reported Mizan Online.

Swedish government which had reportedly voiced its concerns over the case has reacted to it with dismay at Chaab's execution. Talking to the press, Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom said that the execution was "inhuman" and that his government had pleaded with Iran not to carry out the sentence.

"The death penalty is an inhuman and irreversible punishment and Sweden, together with the rest of the EU, condemns its application under all circumstances," said the Swedish Foreign Minister.

Previously Iranian state television had aired a video of Chaab in which he confessed to the 2018 attack on a military parade in Ahvaz, the capital of the southwestern province of Khuzestan.

In the footage, Chaab also admitted to working with Saudi intelligence services. However, such confessions are frequently condemned by rights groups based outside of Iran as "forced", arguing they are often obtained under duress. Iran hangs Swedish-Iranian dissident Habib Farajollah Chaab for being 'corrupt on earth'

Former Iranian football player Ali Karimi, his wife and her family have been subjected to a travel ban during the recent anti-government protests, leaked documents acquired by the BBC have shown.

The publication stated that Karimi was invited by an Iranian agent and received serious warnings before the ban was imposed. Karimi was one of the first influential personalities in the country to stand up in protest after the death of a Kurdish-origin woman named Mahsa Amini, allegedly at the hands of the morality police.

Iran's Revolutionary Guard's intelligence unit in a letter marked 'top secret' and dated October 24, 2022, informed Tehran's prosecutor that "Karimi's recent activities were instigated by his wife Sahar Davari and her family".

Notably, Davari's father, Gholamali Davari had been executed in the late 1980s on charges of being a member of the Communist Tudeh Party. The documents claimed that Karimi's in-laws, on his behalf wanted to sell his mansion in Lavasan to emigrate permanently.

Subsequently, the Revolutionary Guard asked for a travel ban on Karimi, Davari, her mother, step-father, brother and sister.

Karimi said the authorities had ramped up surveillance on him and his family as well as friends.

"My friend was interrogated three or four times in the notorious Evin prison. One of them needed both a deposit bail and a guarantor to be able to leave Iran," he told BBC Persian.

As for selling the mansion, Karim refuted the claims and said, "Security forces raided the place and brutally beat up the janitor. My neighbours tell me lights are on some nights and plain-clothes agents are seen going in and out."

Karimi made his international debut for Iran in 1998 at the age of 19 and went on to make 127 career appearances. He represented the country at four Asian Games as well as the 2006 FIFA World Cup. However, despite giving his all for the country, Karimi and his family have been forced to move out to the UAE to an undisclosed location. My neighbours tell me lights are on some nights and plain-clothes agents are seen going in and out." Karimi made his international debut for Iran in 1998 at the age of 19 and went on to make 127 career appearances. He represented the country at four Asian Games as well as the 2006 FIFA World Cup. However, despite giving his all for the country, Karimi and his family have been forced to move out to the UAE to an undisclosed location. If he returns, the ban would mean he would not be able to leave the country. Iran football star Ali Karimi put under travel ban, reveal leaked documents

The US Navy said on Wednesday (May 3) that Iran has seized a second oil tanker in a week in Gulf waters. This is being seen as the latest escalation in a series of seizures/attacks on commercial vessels in these waters since 2019.

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy (IRGCN) seized the Panama-flagged oil tanker Niovi. The Bahrain-based Fifth Fleet of the US Navy said that the seizure took place at 6:20 am (0220 GMT) while the oil tanker was passing through the narrow Strait of Hormuz. Iranian judiciary's Mizan news agency quoted Tehran's prosecutor as saying that the oil tanker was seized on a judicial order following a complaint by a plaintiff. There were no further details.

The latest incident comes just days after Iran seized a Marshall Islands-flagged oil tanker called the Advantage Sweet. The tanker was seized in the Gulf of Oman. The Marshall Islands flag registry said on Tuesday that the tanker was being held by Iranian authorities in Bandar Abbas.

Maritime security firm Ambrey has said it believed the Advantage Sweet's seizure by Iran was in response to a recent seizure via a court order by the United States of an oil cargo aboard the Marshall Islands tanker Suez Rajan.

The Niovi oil tanker, which was seized on Wednesday, had been travelling from Dubai towards Fujairah port in UAE when it was forced by Iran to change course towards the territorial waters of the country, said US Navy.

The Niovi last reported its position at 0231 GMT on Wednesday off the coast of Oman in the Strait of Hormuz with Fujairah as its destination, Refinitiv ship tracking data showed.

According to the International Maritime Organization shipping database, Niovi's owner is Grand Financing Co, and the ship is managed by Greece-based Smart Tankers.

Reuters said Smart Tankers did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Strait of Hormuz sees the passage of about a fifth of the world's crude oil and oil products. It is a narrow choke point between Iran and Oman.

"Heightened military activity and geopolitical tensions in these regions continue to pose serious threats to commercial vessels," the Marshall Islands flag registry said in an advisory on Tuesday.

"Associated with these threats is the potential for miscalculation or misidentification, which could lead to aggressive actions."

Since 2019, there have been a series of attacks on shipping in the strategic Gulf waters at a time of tension between the United States and Iran.

Indirect talks between Tehran and Washington to revive Iran's 2015 nuclear pact with world powers have stalled since September over a range of issues, including the Islamic Republic's violent crackdown on popular protests, Tehran's sale of drones to Russia and acceleration of its nuclear program.
