In the first half of the financial year 2023-24, the three state-run oil companies reported a combined net profit of ₹57,091.87 crore, representing a 4,917 per cent increase compared to the entire financial year of 2022-23. <o:p></o:p>

The net profits, likely to be revealed in the upcoming results, could influence the decision to decrease fuel prices. Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) is scheduled to announce its Q3 results on January 27, while Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) are expected to follow suit around the same time.<o:p></o:p>

Despite the government's control over public sector OMCs, the companies have the flexibility to adjust fuel prices. The OMCs, holding a monopoly with over 90 per cent market share in domestic fuel retail, also influence pricing strategies adopted by private retailers. <o:p></o:p>

The potential reduction in fuel prices is seen as a proactive measure to manage inflation, which rose marginally to a four-month high of 5.69 per cent in December 2023. Analysts expect the government to make all efforts to keep inflation below the Reserve Bank of India's upper tolerance limit of 6 per cent.<o:p></o:p>

Since April 6, 2022, OMCs have maintained a freeze on petrol and diesel rates, responding to volatility in international oil prices. However, with the government's reduction in excise duty twice, a considerable price hike was avoided during periods of surging crude purchase prices. <o:p></o:p>

The subsequent decline in average oil prices of the Indian basket, coupled with a moderation in oil prices since September 2023, has contributed to the profitability of OMCs.<o:p></o:p>

The sustained downward trend in fuel rates, attributed to lower crude oil prices, is reflected not only in petrol and diesel but also in deregulated fuel products. Minister of Civil Aviation, Jyotiraditya Scindia, outlined the measures implemented to prevent the recurrence of comparable situations in the future.

"Yesterday, Delhi witnessed unprecedented fog wherein visibility fluctuated for several hours, and at times, dropped to zero between 5 AM to 9 AM," Scindia posted on X.

"The authorities, therefore, were compelled to enforce a shut-down of operations for some time even on CAT III runways (CAT III runways cannot handle Zero-Visibility operations). The decision was taken keeping passenger safety in mind, which remains the foremost priority for all in the aviation ecosystem," he added.

Lithium is a crucial component of lithium-ion batteries that power electric vehicles and battery energy storage systems.

The project, with a cost of about Rs 200 crore, involves the exploration and development of five lithium brine blocks in the Catamarca province of Argentina.

The blocks, covering an area of approximately 15,703 hectares, include Cortadera-I, Cortadera-VII, Cortadera-VIII, Cateo-2022-01810132, and Cortadera-VI. KABIL will hold exploration and exclusivity rights, allowing the evaluation, prospecting, and exploration of lithium minerals.

Upon the discovery, exploitation rights for commercial production will be granted.

Argentina, part of the 'lithium triangle' alongside Chile and Bolivia, boasts more than half of the world's total lithium resources.

It holds the distinction of having the second-largest lithium resources, the third-largest reserves, and the fourth-largest production globally.

The PTI report cited India’s Coal and Mines Minister Pralhad Joshi, who highlighted the significance of this agreement, saying, "This is a historic day for both India and Argentina as we are scripting a new chapter in bilateral ties with the Agreement signing between KABIL and CAMYEN."

India's move into lithium exploration aligns with its commitment to a sustainable and diversified supply chain for critical minerals essential to various industries.

The joint venture between NALCO, HCL, and MECL, KABIL, was formed in 2019 to source strategic minerals like lithium and cobalt from overseas locations.

The recent agreement signifies not only a strategic step in securing vital resources for the energy transition but also a strengthening of bilateral ties between India and Argentina.

The Supreme Court had outlawed Jallikattu and bullock-cart races in 2014, including events of a similar nature.

However, a breakthrough came in May last year when a five-judge bench upheld amendments by Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Karnataka to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PCA) Act, 1960. This allowed the resumption of bull-taming sports.

Responding to a Gauhati high court query in October, the Assam Government committed to framing Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).

Subsequently, on December 8, 2023, the state cabinet approved the revival of traditional buffalo fights under strict SOP.&nbsp;

According to Sarma, Moh-Juj was introduced to Assamese culture by the 30th Ahom king Swargadeo Rudra Singha nearly 200 years ago.

Alongside buffalo fights, Swargadeo Rudra Singha introduced elephant-fights and bird fights, events that played a unifying role in society.

The chief minister stressed the delicate balance achieved between animal welfare and the celebration of ancient culture.

In addition to Moh-Juj, the Assam Government also revived the traditional bird-fight, Bulbuli fight, which had faced a ban in 2016. The event, organised in Hayagriva Madhav, was attended by Chief Minister Sarma and his family. Sarma reiterated the government's commitment to breathing life into ancient customs and rituals.

The tracking team noticed incoordination and a staggering gait around 11 am, prompting the cheetah's tranquilisation. Although initially revived, complications arose post-revival, leading to a failed response to CPR.
