In a renewed push for de-escalation, India, during its latest round of high-level military negotiations with China, has emphasised the urgent need for troop disengagement in the remaining friction points in eastern Ladakh.

According to a PTI news agency report citing sources familiar with the matter, during the 19th round of Corps Commander-level talks, the Indian delegation specifically advocated for the resolution of issues in the Depsang Plains and Demchok areas.

The discussions, as per the report, took place at the Chushul-Moldo border point located on the Indian side of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the eastern Ladakh region.&nbsp;

Beginning at approximately 9:30 am, the military dialogue lasted for approximately 10 hours, reported the source.

The Indian representation was led by Lieutenant General Rashim Bali, Commander of the 14 Corps stationed in Leh, while the Chinese contingent was headed by the commander of the South Xinjiang military district.

Despite the extended talks, an official statement&nbsp;from the Indian side is yet to be issued.&nbsp;As per the PTI report, preliminary discussions were held a day before the high-level meeting on Sunday.

The high-level talks come against the backdrop of an over three-year-long period of confrontation between Indian and Chinese troops in specific friction points within eastern Ladakh.&nbsp;

Notably, disengagement efforts have yielded results in certain areas following extensive diplomatic and military dialogues.

Previously, during the 18th round of talks held on April 23, the Indian side had stressed the importance of addressing the ongoing concerns at Depsang and Demchok.

India has consistently reiterated that normalised relations with China depend on peace in the border regions.&nbsp;

The eastern Ladakh border stand-off began on May 5, 2020, following a violent confrontation in the Pangong Lake vicinity. Subsequently, the relations between the two neighbouring nations nosedived after a serious military conflict in the Galwan Valley in June 2020.

India urges swift troop disengagement in Eastern Ladakh during high-level talks with China

Ties between India and China worsened since the 2020 Galwan clashes when in the month of May, troops of both nations engaged in aggressive face-offs resulting in the deaths of soldiers on both sides.&nbsp;

Diplomatic talks keep happening from time to time to pacify the situation but tension continues to simmer as it emerged that there has been increased activity in the area around the Pangong Tso.&nbsp;

On one side, China has amped up activities to complete a bridge across the Pangong Tso, which will connect the north and south banks. On the other hand, India is constructing a road on its side on the north bank. Development of infrastructure has been increased from both sides.&nbsp;

In a report by The Hindu, an official source was quoted as saying that the "construction of a black-topped road towards Finger 4 on our side is on and is expected to be completed by 2025".&nbsp;

"There is a major impetus on infrastructure, road networks, advanced landing grounds and so on," the source added. While speaking to the outlet on the condition of anonymity, the source said that the construction work is at an advanced stage on the alternate axis to the critical Darbuk-Skyok-Daulat Beg Oldie road through the Saser La.&nbsp;

Mentioning the Chinese construction, the report, quoting the source, stated that work is now underway on the main bridge, while the second bridge has been completed and large-scale construction activity, along with construction materials, was observed on the north bank recently. &nbsp;

In a report by ChathamHouse, which was published last month, it was mentioned that satellite images taken in the six months from October 2022 show a region increasingly in a state of flux.&nbsp;The report mentioned that an established Chinese presence can be seen in the area where once there were just a few People's Liberation Army (PLA).&nbsp;

The report added that in that particular region, China has built an extensive set of installations, establishing an ecosystem to support its deployments of PLA troops. The satellite images also showed the expansion of roads, outposts and modern weatherproof camps. They have the facility of parking areas, solar panels and even helipads.&nbsp;

India and China increase infrastructure near Pangong Tso lake: Report

India's Navy chief on Saturday said that there is a "large presence" of Chinese vessels in the Indian Ocean and that the nation keeps a "very close watch" in the region to protect and preserve its national interests in the maritime domain. Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar was speaking during an interaction at a conclave in New Delhi.

"We are keeping a very close watch in the Indian Ocean Region... and effort is to know whose presence is there and what are they up to, monitoring it 24x7 and we deploy aircraft, UAVs, ships, submarines, etc.," said the Navy chief.

PTI reports that when asked about the threats, the Navy chief said besides the conventional and non-conventional threats, a "web of threats" which he described as a "silent and inclusive paradigm" are emerging.

"On a daily basis, it is being seen that there is a certain amount of contestation happening at sea. It is well below the threshold of conflict, but the possibility of a full-fledged cannot be ruled out," added the Navy chief.

Answering a question about China's PLA (People's Liberation Army) ships docking at Pakistan's port, he said that these ships are docking at ports in various countries, and not just in India's neighbourhood. He also said that India is keeping a "watch" on these vessels in Pakistan ports.

"There is a large presence of Chinese vessels. At any point of time, there are 3-6 Chinese warships in the Indian Ocean Region," he said, adding that some of these are close to the Gulf of Oman, while others are in the eastern part of the IOR, among other places.

"So, we refine our plans, actions that are required to be taken, and this also feeds into our capability development," the Navy chief said.

When asked about Chinese research vessels, Admiral Kumar as per PTI said that they have the ability to track and collect electronic signals and that when they operate, close to "our areas of national interest", the Indian Navy keeps an eye, and it has its ships which "monitor them very, very closely."

According to a PTI report citing the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), talks at an early date would help to achieve the objective in accordance with the existing bilateral agreements and protocols.

"The two sides reviewed the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Western Sector of India-China border areas and discussed proposals for disengagement in the remaining areas in an open and constructive manner, which would help in the restoration of peace and tranquillity along the LAC in Western Sector and create conditions for the restoration of normalcy in bilateral relations," said the MEA.

The 17th round of military talks was held on December 20 of last year. However, there was no indication of any forward movement in the resolution of the remaining issues between India and China.

India shares a 3488 km border with China which is divided into three sectors, the eastern sector (along the states of Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim), the western sector (Ladakh), and the middle sector (Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh). However, Beijing only considers the LAC to be around 2,000 km. The ill-defined border along these sectors has caused many disputes over the years between the two countries.&nbsp;

After the most recent skirmish between the Indian Army and China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA), a military source told the Indian Express, “In certain areas along the LAC in the Tawang sector in Arunachal Pradesh there are areas of differing perception, where both sides patrol the area up to their claim lines. This has been the trend since 2006.”&nbsp;

Origins of the border dispute in Arunachal

Arunachal Pradesh is strategically significant for India, as the state borders Bhutan, China, and Myanmar and plays a crucial role in the country’s defence and security. Even after&nbsp;India gained independence,&nbsp;the borders which were internationally&nbsp;agreed upon, over the years,&nbsp;including&nbsp;the arbitrary one drawn by British officials&nbsp;based primarily on the highest watershed principle remained the same.&nbsp;However, when China's&nbsp;communist party came into power in 1949, they pulled out of all international agreements.&nbsp;

Beijing believes that these "unequal treaties"&nbsp;had been imposed on it during its “century of humiliation” and called for re-negotiation of all the borders with India. In the eastern sector, the border was drawn along the McMahon Line which was named after Sir Henry McMahon, foreign secretary of British India. In 1914 the 890 km border between erstwhile British India and Tibet was decided at the Simla Convention between China, Tibet and Great Britain.

However, China has disputed the border which was drawn at the highest watershed principle based on which the previously undefined borders between erstwhile British India and Tibet included Tawang. Reports suggest that the border was never officially demarcated as the British colonial rulers did not see the need to do so in such a remote area. There had been several exchanges between then-Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai and former Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru regarding the issue.&nbsp;

Notably, in 1949-50&nbsp;China invaded&nbsp;Tibet and Beijing argued that when the agreement came into effect it was signed by the Tibetan government which was not a sovereign state at the time and consequently, claims parts of Arunachal Pradesh, including Tawang, as a part of Tibet. In 1962, this led to an all-out war between India and China which was predominantly fought in Aksai Chin, a region which is the western end of the Himalayas with Arunachal Pradesh in the east.&nbsp;

China’s claim on Arunachal Pradesh

China has previously claimed some 90,000 sq km which is virtually the entire Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh and is&nbsp;approximately a little over 8,000 sq km, to begin with as a part of its country.&nbsp;Beijing has also repeatedly produced maps which show Arunachal Pradesh as part of China and refer to the state as “Zangnan” in the Chinese language.&nbsp;

Additionally, it also tried to assign Chinese names to places in Arunachal Pradesh in 2017 and again in 2021, which was seen&nbsp;as a bid to unilaterally change the status quo. However, India has since dismissed these claims, “Arunachal Pradesh has always been, and will always be, an integral part of India. Assigning invented names to places in Arunachal Pradesh does not alter this fact,” said the Ministry of External Affairs, in late 2021 after 15 Chinese names were assigned to regions in Arunachal Pradesh. &nbsp;

US senators introduce bipartisan resolution in Congress for Arunachal Pradesh

Last week, two United States Senators, Democrat Jeff Merkley from Oregon and Republican Bill Hagerty from Tennessee introduced a Senate resolution reaffirming Washington’s recognition of Arunachal Pradesh as an integral part of India. The lawmakers also condemned China’s military aggression to change the status quo along the LAC.&nbsp;

Additionally, the resolution came months after the most recent clash between the Indian and Chinese troops in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tawang region. In a statement, Merkley also said that the resolution reaffirmed that the US recognised the McMahon Line as the international boundary between China and the Indian state Arunachal Pradesh.&nbsp;

“This resolution makes clear that the United States views the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh as part of the Republic of India—not the People’s Republic of China (PRC)—and commits the US to deepening support and assistance to the region, alongside like-minded international partners and donors”, the Democratic senator, added.&nbsp;

The senators also condemned Beijing’s use of “construction of villages in contested areas, publication of maps with Mandarin-language names for cities and feature in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh, and expansion of PRC territorial claims in Bhutan”, to change the status quo along the LAC. On the other hand, the US lauded New Delhi’s government to take steps for defending itself from Chinese aggression.&nbsp;

Clashes between Indian and Chinese troops along the LAC

While the region had more or less been peaceful since the war while the dispute has been handled by the countries through diplomatic talks. However, the deadly clashes between Indian and Chinese troops in 2020 years after another incident in 1975, along the LAC have led to a rise in tensions between the two sides.&nbsp;

According to reports, in 1975 four Indian Army personnel were killed after an ambush by the Chinese military in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tulung La region.

2020

According to reports, there was a five-hour confrontation between some 600 military personnel from both sides who engaged in hand-to-hand combat, in June. At least 20 Indian soldiers were killed and while China claims that only four of their soldiers died, the death toll is speculated to be over 40 PLA troops, as per media reports. Furthermore, Indian and Chinese troops later that year also accused each other of firing warning shots during a confrontation.&nbsp;

2022

Last year, in December the two sides again engaged in a clash this time at the Yangtse, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/chinas-lac-intrusion-attempt-set-to-rock-indian-parliament-542512">Tawang</a> in Arunachal Pradesh. The incident took place on December 9 following which Beijing&nbsp;alleged that Indian troops “illegally” crossed the LAC while the Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in his statement to the parliament said China attempted to “unilaterally change the status quo”.

Chinese President Xi Jinping recently held a rare video conversation with the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) troops stationed on the Indian border near Eastern Ladakh and inspected their combat readiness.&nbsp;According to local state media, the event took place on January 18. The Chinese leader was at the PLA headquarters when he addressed the troops on the border defence situation in Khunjerab under the Xinjiang Military Command.

The Xinjiang military command troops are involved in managing border areas along Eastern Ladakh, which has seen tensions since April 2020 after the PLA carried out multiple transgressions.

In his address, Xi, who is also general secretary of the ruling Communist Party of China and the commander-in-chief of the PLA, spoke about how “in recent years, the area has been constantly changing” and how it had impacted the Chinese army, according to the video shown in the official media.

One of the soldiers replied that they were now carrying out “dynamic” and “24-hour” monitoring of the border. Xi then asked about their conditions and whether they were able to “receive fresh vegetables” in the inhospitable terrain.

According to the state media, Xi asked the border troops “about their border patrol and management work” and “hailed the soldiers as models of border defence and encouraged them to persist in their efforts and make new contributions.”

Eastern Ladakh has been one of the flashpoints of recent India-China tensions that erupted following the violent clash in the Pangong lake area.

So far, 17 rounds of high-level military talks have been held between the two countries and yet no significant breakthrough has been achieved in resolving the border issue.

India has repeatedly taken a tough stand, asserting that border instability and trade can’t go hand-in-hand, and has taken various measures to limit India’s reliability on Chinese goods.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Sunday said that China is ready to work with India towards a steady and sound growth of relations between the two countries.&nbsp;Talking to reporters, Yi as per ANI said that the two nations "have maintained communication through diplomatic and military-to-military channels", adding that the two countries are "committed to upholding stability in border areas".

He said that China stands "ready to work with India in the direction toward steady and sound growth of China-India relations."

China has for long been opposed to such blocs, which it claims are aimed at containing its rise.

China ‘ready to work with India’ for steady growth of relations: Foreign Minister Wang Yi

Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama on Monday called India a "perfect place" and his "permanent residence", adding that he prefers the country over China.

Dalai lama, as per ANI, made the statement in response to a query regarding the recent border clash in Tawang between India and China.&nbsp;

Talking to reporters at the Kangra airport in India's Himachal Pradesh, the spiritual leader who has been living in Dharamshala in Himachal since 1959, said, "Now things... General speaking, things are improving, I think in Europe and Africa and also in Asia. Now China also now more flexible."

India is my 'permanent residence, no point to return to China', says Dalai Lama

Europe was the centre of power in the nineteenth century, the twentieth century was Americanized. Now, Asia’s rise has been swift. Over the past few decades, the Centre of power has shifted from West to East. &nbsp;India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s remarks on the “Asian century” triggered the discourse on how normalcy matters between New Delhi and Beijing in shaping the "Asian Century" which was itself coined by the former Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping in 1988. 

Addressing the future of India-China relations at Chulalongkorn University, he described it as an extremely difficult phase. It is, however, worthwhile to quote the former U.S. Senator and American diplomat, “There are no permanent friends or permanent enemies, just permanent interests.” In response, Beijing backs that ‘we have far more common interests than differences'. This piece provides three reasons to substantiate the notion of an Asian century and further highlight that organizations like BRICS and SCO may diffuse the existing deep hostilities and suspicions within the Asian region. Under this backdrop, let us examine how New Delhi and Beijing can shape the Asian Century. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Firstly, Asia is the home for fast-growing Emerging Markets. Asia currently hosts two fast-growing economies that are in the top 10 by GDP PPP. For example, in 2021 China was in the second place on the list (only the United States remained ahead), whereas India ranked sixth, and this Asian country was ahead of such mature economies as Canada, Italy, France, and Australia. Both countries aim to ensure economic growth, and they are the largest consumers of natural and mineral resources in the world that to provide the industries with ‘’combustible materials’’. In 2020, China was the world's biggest importer of crude oil ($150 billion), iron ore ($99 billion), petroleum gas ($36.6 billion) and copper ore ($33.9 billion). 

As of 2021, China remained the largest importer of crude oil, ahead of the USA. China accounted for 22.3% of global crude oil imports. At the same time, India imported 10.4% of global crude oil imports. And the country ranked third with this indicator. Coal is another raw material that could provide rapid growth for China and India economies and to decrease the poverty of its population.&nbsp;&nbsp;In 2021, China and India were among the top five countries that were world leaders in coal imports. In terms of coal imports, India ranked first. China was in third place behind Japan. It is interesting to note that Asian countries accounted for the highest dollar worth of imported coal in 2021 with purchases amounting to $120.5 billion or 80.9% of the worldwide total. &nbsp;

Currently, the geopolitical situation is beneficial for these Asian countries and probably it will help to bring the Asian century much closer. Russia is one of the largest oil and coal exporters in the world. Western countries have imposed a ban to buy Russian hydrocarbons. That is the reason India and China increased Russian oil and coal imports. Actually, in the July 2022 India's coal import raised 10% on-month to 2.03 million tons from Russia. On the other hand, in June 2022, China increased coal imports from Russia by 22%compared to the previous month, to 6.12 million tons. 

Secondly, Asia is the venue for Demographic Giants. The problem of ensuring growth for the two Asian economies is directly related to the urgency to reduce poverty and to improve living standards for the population. India and China are two demographic giants. These are the most populated countries in the world. In 2022, China ranked first in the world, and India ranked second. Both countries have populations over a billion. The BRICS countries (the group also includes Brazil, Russia, and South Africa) are regarded as the five major emerging economies expected to dominate in the 21st century, are all in the top ten most populous countries (South Africa is exception), indicating how important the size of their populations are to their economic expansion. Currently, the main source of economic growth is human capital. The quality of human capital affects the creativity and innovativeness of the country's economy. Unlike mature economies of developed nations, India and China are the largest reservoir of human capital that will ensure economic growth over the long term. In another words, demographic dividend of India and China is one of the main pillar of Asian century.

Thirdly, BRICS is the Frame for Asian Century. India and China are the members of BRICS. The organization is informal, but it is a platform for direct interaction between the countries. This fact allows coordinating actions in different areas (humanitarian sphere, academic and research cooperation, trade, military interactions, etc.). BRICS makes it possible to establish and maintain direct contacts at the highest level. Any organization needs time to develop mutually beneficial mechanisms of interaction. However, it is India and China that can turn the BRICS into a reliable framework for building Asian century. These countries have the great potential because of their demographic, industrial, intellectual and creative resources. The Asian region forms the current agenda that developed countries have to reckon with. 

For a long time, the Asian region was in the shadow of European and American powers. The need to cope with numerous problems and overcome countless disputes did not allow the countries of the region to form a system that would transform their immense potential into a world of prosperity and progress. The Asian century is not about seizing resources and imposing one's power on other peoples and countries. The Asian century will reveal the full diversity of cultures and civilizations of the region, which are capable of providing prosperity and happiness to billions of people on the planet. To ensure the Asian century, two countries that form its basis are of great importance. India and China are able to anchor in the global world to overcome various contradictions and build a system with permanent friends for mutual economic and social prosperity. Billions of people with their everyday hard work and desire for a better life deserve the advent of the Asian century, which will show that cultural, political, language, and ethnical differences are no longer obstacles for true human happiness.

India-China: An anchor of the evolving Asian century

India on Tuesday hit out at China, and Pakistan at United Nations Security Council meeting on terrorism, calling out both on several counts from "double standards" to "hypocrisy" over the issue. Pointing out the "practice of placing holds and blocks on listing requests without giving any justification", India's Ambassador to UN, Ruchira Kamboj, said, "It is most regrettable that genuine and evidence-based listing proposals pertaining to some of the most notorious terrorists in the world are being placed on hold."&nbsp;

Earlier this year, China had put a hold on the UN listing of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Tayyiba's 2nd command Abdul Rehman Makki. China has put a technical hold on Makki that will last for 6 months. In the past too, Beijing had put a hold on the listing of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), Maulana Masood Azhar and it took a decade for New Delhi to list him as an UN-listed terrorist.

Ambassador Ruchira explained that "double standards and continuing politicization have rendered the credibility of Sanctions Regime at an all-time low. We do hope that all members of the UNSC can pronounce together in one voice, sooner than later, when it comes to this collective fight against international terrorism."

Important to note, that the meeting on the issue of terrorism comes under the month-long presidency of China of the UNSC.

About Pakistan, the ambassador pointed to the "state hospitality" for terrorists in a "neighbouring country despite being listed under the UNSC 1267 Sanctions Committee." UN's 1267 committee lists one of the largest numbers of Pakistanis as international terrorists. These include Masood Azhar, Hafiz Saeed, and Zaki ur Rehman Lakhvi, many of whom were responsible for terror attacks in India, including the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack. Islamabad has gone to UNSC for getting allowances for many of them. She asked the international community to call out "such hypocrisy.. when the threat of terrorism looms large in each of our countries."

During her address, the ambassador announced that India will be hosting a special session of the UN's counter-terror committee in Mumbai and Delhi on 28th and 29th October which will highlight the nature of the "threat, member states’ capacity gaps and best practices and exploring the further course of action to effectively deal with this threat." India is the chair of the Counter-Terrorism Committee.

During the address she also mentioned the recent attacks on Gurudwara in Kabul, calling them "highly alarming". The multiple attacks on Sikhs and Gurudwaras in Afghanistan have led to an exodus of the minority community as many arrive in India seeking refuge. The ambassador emphasised that "The linkages between groups listed by the UNSC such as the Lashkar-e-Tayyaba and the Jaish-e-Mohammed as well as provocative statements made by other terrorist groups operating out of Afghanistan pose a direct threat to the peace and stability of the region".

The Secretary General's report on threats posed by Islamic State received criticism as well for "selective filtering" as India hoped that in "future iterations of SG’s reports, inputs from all member states would be treated on an equal footing". The report made no mention of several terror groups in the region "especially those that have been repeatedly targeting India."

At UNSC, India slams China, Pakistan for double standards on terrorism

As India's financial crime-fighting agency Enforcement Directorate (ED) continues to raid offices of Chinese smartphone maker Vivo, as per a report by IANS, directors of one of the firms associated with the brand have fled the country. The Indian financial agency started its raid on Vivo on Tuesday (July&nbsp;6th). According to a Reuters report, the searches were part of an investigation into suspected money laundering. Reacting to news of the raids, China has expressed hope that India will conduct the investigations in a “fair” and “non-discriminatory” manner. Two Chinese directors of a Himachal Pradesh-based company associated with Vivo are believed to have fled, reported IANS quoting sources. The report further alleged that the Chinese nationals were made directors of the Indian firms by making use of fake documents.

However, in an email, a Vivo representative stated that the company was cooperating with the authorities to provide them with all required information."

"As a responsible corporate, we are committed to be fully compliant with laws."

Zhao Lijian, a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, responded to questions about the ongoing raids on Vivo offices in many cities throughout India by saying that his country is actively monitoring the situation.

He said, “As I have stressed many times, the Chinese government always asks Chinese companies to abide by laws and regulations when doing business overseas", adding that, "we firmly support Chinese companies in safeguarding their lawful rights and interests.”

“We hope the Indian side will conduct investigations and law enforcement in accordance with laws and regulations and earnestly provide a fair, just and non-discriminatory business environment for Chinese companies investing and operating in India,” he said.

According to ED sources, the enforcement agency has so far learned of money laundering worth approximately $1200 million (INR 10,000 crore) during the raid operations.

The Vivo raids come months after the Enforcement Directorate opened an inquiry into Xiaomi Corp., one of India's top smartphone vendors, for alleged unlawful payments sent abroad under the pretence of "royalties." A total of around $725 million (INR 5,551 &nbsp;crore) was seized during the said searches.

Xiaomi has denied any wrongdoing and claimed in court that when being questioned by representatives from the Directorate, its top executives were subjected to coercion and threats of "physical violence." The claims were refuted by the agency.

According to reports, the border issue played a prominent role in the meeting between Wang and Doval, since the two have been serving as Special Representatives (SR) for the boundary talks between the two countries.

An atmosphere of cordial discussion prevailed during the talks.&nbsp;

In the discussion, several significant points were made, including the necessity of disengaging early and completely in the remaining areas and removing impediments to allow the bilateral relationship to develop naturally.

The two sides also emphasized the need for the continuation of&nbsp;positive interactions at the diplomatic and military levels to restore peace and tranquillity, which they said is a prerequisite for normalisation.

It was agreed that continuing with the present situation was not in the mutual interest of both countries and that bringing back peace and tranquillity will help to build mutual trust and create an enabling environment for relations to progress.

The two sides have agreed that working in the same direction and resolving outstanding issues as quickly as possible, ensuring that actions do not violate the spirit of equality and mutual security is in the best interest of both countries.&nbsp;

To carry the forward mandate of the SRs, the Chinese side has invited NSA Doval to visit China. Responding positively to the invitation, the NSA declared he would be able to visit if the immediate issues could be resolved

High-level talks have been taking place between India and China on resolving friction points in eastern Ladakh. Following the talks, both sides have already withdrawn troops from some of the friction points.

The 15th round of high-level military dialogue between India and China took place on March 11 to resolve the pending issues in the eastern Ladakh region. However, there was no advancement in the negotiations to resolve the remaining issues.

The Indian-Chinese border standoff erupted on May 5, 2020, following a violent clash in the Pangong lake region.

After the clashes in Galwan Valley on June 15, 2020, the conflict escalated further. The clashes claimed the lives of 20 Indian soldiers and an unspecified number of Chinese soldiers.

News agency ANI quoting defence sources said the Indian Army contacted the PLA through a hotline informing that the boy was collecting herbs and was hunting and asked the Chinese officials to return the individual as per established protocol.

In a tweet Gao said Chinese PLA troops had abducted Miram Taron on January 18 &nbsp;inside Indian territory as he requested the Indian government to contact Chinese officials&nbsp;for his safe release. The MP said his friend escaped and reported it to the authorities.

MLA from Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh Ninong Ering called the incident "shocking" as he requested the Indian foreign ministry to intervene.

The development comes as Indian and Chinese commanders concluded the 14th round of talks recently. The talks were held at Chushul-Moldo meeting point in eastern Ladakh as India pressed for the disengagement process at Hot Springs.

India and China have been involved in a standoff at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh since May 2020. In June 2020, Indian and Chinese troops were involved in a clash at Galwan Valley in which 20 Indian soldiers were killed&nbsp;including four&nbsp;Chinese PLA soldiers.

Although China had announced disengagement at the border in February last year but reports say PLA have&nbsp;built new fortifications and roads along the LAC and stationed troops. India had earlier slammed China's move to build a bridge across Pangong Lake.

PLA allegedly 'abducts' teenager in Arunachal Pradesh; Indian Army seeks safe return home

There was no breakthrough in the 14th round of talks between the militaries of India and China, and the two sides agreed to maintain dialogue via military and diplomatic channels to work out a "mutually acceptable resolution" of the remaining issues.

The two sides said in a joint statement on Thursday that they have agreed that the next round of border talks should be held at the earliest. 
Indian Army Chief General M M Naravane had said on Wednesday that India was hopeful of resolving issues related to disengagement at Patrolling Point 15 (Hot Springs) in eastern Ladakh in the 14th round of talks.

The latest round of talks took place days after India hit out at China for building a bridge across Pangong lake in eastern Ladakh and said it is in an area that has been under illegal occupation of that country for around 60 years.

The 14th round of Corps Commander-level meeting was held on Wednesday at the Chushul-Moldo border meeting point on the Chinese side of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh.

The joint statement said that the representatives from the defence and foreign affairs establishments of the two sides were present at the talks.

There was a "frank and in-depth" exchange of views for the resolution of the relevant issues related to the LAC in the western sector (Ladakh border), it said. 
The two countries agreed that both of them should follow "the guidance provided by the state leaders" and work for the resolution of the remaining issues at the earliest, according to the statement.

"It was noted that this would help in restoration of peace and tranquillity along the LAC in the Western Sector and enable progress in bilateral relations," it mentioned.

The two countries also agreed to consolidate on the previous outcomes and take effective efforts to maintain the security and stability on the ground in the Western Sector including during winter, it said.

"The two sides agreed to stay in close contact and maintain dialogue via military and diplomatic channels and work out a mutually acceptable resolution of the remaining issues at the earliest," it mentioned.

The two sides agreed that the next round of the commanders' talks should be held at the earliest, the statement said.

Along with Hot Springs, India has been talking with China about a quick disengagement on all the remaining friction points including resolution of issues in Depsang Bulge and Demchok.

Last week, India described China's renaming of some places in Arunachal Pradesh as a "ridiculous exercise" to support "untenable territorial" claims, asserting that the state has always been and will always remain an "inalienable" part of India.

In their virtual diplomatic talks on November 18 last year, India and China had agreed to hold the 14th round of military talks at an early date to achieve the objective of complete disengagement in remaining friction points in eastern Ladakh.

The 13th round of talks had taken place on October 10 last year and it had ended in a stalemate with the Indian Army saying after the dialogue that the "constructive suggestions" made by it were neither agreeable to the Chinese side nor it could provide any "forward-looking" proposals.

China has decided to skip India's 'Delhi Regional Security Dialogue on Afghanistan', a meeting of national security advisers from the region.

Conclave participants will work to develop a common approach to practical cooperation in the face of growing threats from terrorism, radicalization, and drug trafficking following the Taliban takeover of Kabul.

The dialogue will be chaired by India's National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval.&nbsp;

Additionally, Doval will also hold bilateral talks with his counterparts, including those from Russia and Iran.

The participating countries, according to sources, are in very high agreement regarding the security implications of the Taliban seizing power in Afghanistan, and the focus of the dialogue will be on how to work together on practical matters.

According to the MEA, India has enjoyed close and friendly relations with the people of Afghanistan and has called for a unified international response to tackle the security and humanitarian challenges Afghanistan faces.

"The forthcoming meeting is a step in that direction," it said.

Participants in the conference have not recognized the Taliban, and they all share similar concerns and worries about the situation in Afghanistan.

China has been an aggressor against India along the Himalayan border, a top American diplomat nominated by President Joe Biden as his next envoy to Beijing has told lawmakers, stating that the US must hold the Chinese government accountable for failing to play by the rules.

Nicholas Burns told members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee during his confirmation hearing on Wednesday that the US will challenge China where it must, including when Beijing takes actions that run counter to America's values and interests; threaten the security of the United States or its allies and partners; or undermine the rules-based international order.

China claims sovereignty over all of the South China Sea. Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines, Brunei and Taiwan have counter claims.

Beijing is engaged in hotly contested territorial disputes in both the South China Sea and the East China Sea. It has built up and militarised many of the islands and reefs it controls in the region. Both areas are stated to be rich in minerals, oil and other natural resources and are also vital to global trade.

Burns said that the "Chinese genocide in Xinjiang and abuses in Tibet, its smothering of Hong Kong's autonomy and freedoms, and its bullying of Taiwan are unjust, and must stop”.

Beijing's recent actions against Taiwan are especially objectionable and the US is right to continue to adhere to its one-China policy, he said.

“We are also right to support the peaceful resolution of disputes, and to oppose unilateral actions that undermine the status quo and stability in the Indo-Pacific,” he said.

Taiwan considers itself a sovereign state - but China views the self-ruled island as a breakaway province. Beijing has not ruled out the possible use of force to achieve unification.

Burns told lawmakers that the US will compete and compete vigorously with China where it should, including on jobs and the economy, critical infrastructure and emerging technologies.

It will cooperate with China where it is in its interest, including on climate change, counternarcotics, global health and non-proliferation, he told members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

China, he said, seeks to become the most powerful military, economic, and political actor in the Indo Pacific.

"We must stand with our allies and partners to uphold a free and open Indo-Pacific, including by maintaining America's commercial and military superiority in 21st century technologies.

"We also must hold the PRC (People's Republic of China) accountable for failing to play by the rules on trade and investment, including its thefts of intellectual property, use of state subsidies, dumping of goods and unfair labour practices.

"These actions harm American workers and businesses," Burns added.

The border standoff between the Indian and Chinese militaries erupted on May 5 last year following a violent clash in the Pangong lake areas and both sides gradually enhanced their deployment by rushing in tens of thousands of soldiers as well as heavy weaponry.

As a result of a series of military and diplomatic talks, the two sides completed the disengagement process in the Gogra area in August and in the north and south banks of the Pangong lake in February.
