Despite tense India-China relations, New Delhi warms up to Dalai Lama on his 85th birthday

The US has thanked India for hosting the Dalai Lama since 1959 as the world commemorated the 85th birthday of the Tibetan spiritual leader.

The Dalai Lama has been living in India ever since he fled Tibet in 1959 following a Chinese invasion on Tibet. The Tibetan government-in-exile operates from Dharamsala in Himachal Pradesh. Over 1,60,000 Tibetans live in India.

"Happy 85th birthday to His Holiness @DalaiLama, who has inspired the world through his peace & kindness, and as a symbol of the struggle for Tibetans and their heritage. We thank India for hosting His Holiness and Tibetans in freedom since 1959 & wish His Holiness happiness," the US State Department's South and Central Asian Affairs (SCA) bureau tweeted on Monday.

Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi also conveyed her greetings to the Tibetan spiritual leader on his birthday.

"The Dalai Lama is a messenger of hope, whose spiritual guidance has been a vital force to advance warm-heartedness and compassion, promote religious harmony, secure human rights and preserve the language and culture of the Tibetan people," she said.

Sadly, the aspirations of His Holiness and the Tibetan people remain unfulfilled as the oppressive Chinese regime continues its disgraceful campaign of persecution, Ms Pelosi said.

She noted that the US Congress on a bipartisan basis has long spoken with one voice in defence of those persecuted by Beijing and will continue to do so.

In January, House Democrats defended the rights of Tibetans to practice their faith, speak their language and celebrate their culture free from Beijing's repressive grip by passing the Tibet Policy and Support Act, which makes clear the US position that interference by Beijing in the process of recognising a successor or reincarnation of the 14th Dalai Lama would represent a clear violation of the religious freedoms of the Tibetan people.

"The Senate must pass this bipartisan legislation and support the bond of friendship that has existed between the United States, the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan people for decades," Ms Pelosi said.

In honour of this special day and of the dreams of the Tibetan people, America remains committed to opposing the acceleration of Beijing's aggression toward the people of Tibet, as well as its brutal campaign against the Uyghur people, its suppression of free speech and assault on the 'one country, two systems' doctrine in Hong Kong, and its violent efforts to undermine religious freedom and human rights throughout China, she said.

"May this next year bring His Holiness The Dalai Lama, the people of Tibet and all those working to advance freedom in China and around the world a future of peace, security and prosperity for all," Ms Pelosi said.

Congressman Andy Levin in a tweet wished the Dalai Lama a joyous birthday. "May we all follow the example set by His Holiness in the coming year and work towards a more peaceful world," he said.

Chinese troops remove tents, move back from Galwan Valley: Sources

The Indian government is reviewing around 50 investment proposals involving Chinese companies under a new screening policy, three sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.

Under new rules announced by India in April, all investments by entities based in neighbouring countries need to be approved by the Indian government, whether for new or additional funding. China is the biggest of these investors and the rules drew criticism from Chinese investors and Beijing, which called the policy discriminatory.

The new investment rules were aimed at curbing opportunistic takeovers during the coronavirus outbreak. However, industry executives say a deterioration in bilateral relations since a clash along the countries` contested border last month, in which 20 Indian soldiers were killed, could further delay approvals.

"Various clearances are required. We are being a bit more cautious as one would imagine," said a senior Indian government official in New Delhi, when asked about the impact on investment applications since the border clash.
India`s industries department under the commerce ministry, which drafted the new policy, did not respond to a request for comment.

The sources declined to name the companies whose investments are pending approvals, due to confidentiality concerns.

The official, and two other sources, said about 40-50 applications involving funding from Chinese investors have been filed since the rule change and are currently under review.

One of the sources said that multiple Indian government agencies, including the Indian consulates in China, have been communicating with investors and their representatives to seek clarifications on the proposals.

Alok Sonker, a partner at Indian law firm Krishnamurthy & Co, said at least 10 Chinese clients had sought his advice in recent weeks for investing in India, but were waiting for more clarity on the policy outlook in India.

Government confirms what WION told you 10 days ago - China moves troops back from Galwan Valley

The Indian Air Force is significantly enhancing deployment of its frontline jets, attack helicopters and transport fleet in all its key bases guarding the airspace along the Line of Actual Control in view of heightened border tension with China in eastern Ladakh, people familiar with the development said on Saturday.

The IAF has also pressed into service a fleet of C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft as well as C-130J Super Hercules in transporting heavy military equipment and weaponry to several forward bases to further ramp up India's military preparedness in the region.

The IAF is also using its Ilyushin-76 fleet to transport troops to various areas along the Line of Actual Control, the 3,500 km de-facto border between India and China, the people cited above said.

They said the force has already moved a sizeable number of its frontline Sukhoi 30 MKI, Jaguar, Mirage 2000 aircraft to several key air bases including Leh and Srinagar.

It has also deployed Apache attack choppers and Chinook heavy-lift helicopters to transport troops to various forward locations.

The frontline fighter jets have increased their sorties in Ladakh and nearby areas in the last few days as part of increased alert level, and probably as a response to expanded activities of the Chinese air force, the people said.

"We are fully ready to deal with any situation," said a senior official when asked about increasing activities of the IAF in Ladakh and other regions.

Last month, Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria made a quiet visit to Ladakh and Srinagar air bases to review the Indian Air Force's preparedness to deal with any eventualities in the region.

The Indian and Chinese armies are locked in a bitter standoff in multiple locations in eastern Ladakh for the last seven weeks.

The tension escalated manifold after 20 Indian soldiers were killed in a violent clash in Galwan Valley on June 15. The Chinese side also suffered casualties but it is yet to give out the details.

India has been insisting on restoration of status quo ante in all areas of eastern Ladakh to restore peace and tranquillity in the region.

India and China have held several rounds of diplomatic and military talks in the last few weeks to ease tension in the region. However, there was no visible sign of end to the standoff though the two sides agreed to initiate disengagement of the forces from the region.

India on Thursday said it expected China to ensure expeditious restoration of peace and tranquillity in the border areas in sync with provisions of relevant bilateral pacts.

India on Thursday said it expected China to ensure expeditious restoration of peace and tranquillity in the border areas in sync with provisions of relevant bilateral pacts. Following the Galwan Valley clashes, the Army has sent thousands of additional troops to forward locations along the border besides moving in heavy weapons.

Russia has been in touch with India and China over the situation at the Line of Actual control (LAC), and has welcomed efforts to cool the situation down. Moscow bilaterally has engaged with both "close partners" amidst the tensions over the violent face off at the LAC.

A Russian government source told WION, "Moscow is staying in touch with India and China, appreciating efforts of both partners to de-escalate and offering them to use multilateral platforms to expand the potential for cooperation."

The source added, "We are maintaining regular dialogue with all our partners and not playing any geopolitical games at the expense of third parties’ tensions."

Russia has clearly said it would not mediate between China and India. Earlier Russian FM Sergey Lavrov rejected any sort of Russia mediation between India and China.

Just last week Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov reiterated it again saying, "I think that any intervention, even the one with good intentions, in such a delicate matter as border disputes is not just inexpedient but can also seriously hurt the efforts Beijing and New Delhi are independently making to find a way out of this situation."

India has called for a proper management of the China-Hong Kong situation, citing it has taken note of "several statements expressing concerns on these developments". India was making a statement at the third meeting at 44th Regular Session Human Rights Council.

“Given the large Indian community that makes the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China it is home, India has been keeping a close watch on recent developments", India's envoy to UN bodies in Geneva Rajiv Kumar Chander said.

He added, "We have heard several statements expressing concern on these developments. We hope the relevant parties will take into account these views and address them properly, seriously and objectively."

Beijing unveiled the details of the much-anticipated law late on Tuesday after weeks of uncertainty. Critics say the legislation is aimed at snuffing out dissent.

The new law will punish crimes of secession, subversion, terrorism and collusion with foreign forces with up to life in prison, will see mainland security agencies in Hong Kong for the first time and allow for extradition to the mainland for trial.

Hong Kong police fired water cannon and tear gas and arrested nearly 200 people on Wednesday as protesters took to the streets in defiance of the new security legislation.

For India, declaring Tibet as an occupied territory would rectify some historic wrongs. The consequences of when India recognised China's claims over Tibet due to panchsheel agreement.

When India recognised China's claims over Tibet

China claims ownership of Tibet due to historical mistakes that India was very much a part of. After the independence of Tibet, Dalai Lama's government was facing two big problems lack of stability and recognition. So Tibet reached out to Britain. The Shimla agreement established the Mc-Mahon line. It also divided Tibet into inner and outer regions.

During 1913-14, an understanding known as the Shimla Accord was marked between the delegates of British India, Tibet and China. The Accord separated Tibet into Inner and Outer Tibet. The terms gave China sway over Inner Tibet yet suzerainty over Outer Tibet which would keep on being administered by the Tibetan government at Lhasa.

According to the Anglo-Tibetan Declaration "The governments of Great Britain and China recognizing that Tibet is under the suzerainty of China, and recognizing also the autonomy of outer Tibet, engage to respect the territorial integrity of the country, and to abstain from interference in the administration of outer Tibet (including the selection and installation of the Dalai Lama), which shall remain in the hands of the Tibetan government at Lhasa. The Government of China engages not to convert Tibet into a Chinese province. The Government of Great Britain engages not to annex Tibet or any portion of it,".

China did not sign this accord, in 1949, Beijing invaded Tibet and India called the move 'deplorable' and
'not in the interest of China or peace’.

New Delhi followed it up with a big blunder, in 1954, the govt of Jawaharlal Nehru signed the Panchsheel treaty in Beijing.

The two sides exchanged views on the India-China boundary question and expounded their respective positions. They reiterated their readiness to seek a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable solution through consultations on an equal footing. 17 years on, there is no equal footing. China stop bullying: Indian-Americans protest against China in Chicago

China conducts its foreign policy through its military, and what's happening on the border with India is a way to distract the world from its virus export.

It is clearly an attempt to buy time, and deal with its crisis of credibility. The military offensive provides the perfect distraction, but the world isn't falling for it.

The US is reviewing its global deployment of forces to ensure it is postured appropriately to counter the People's Liberation Army, given the increasing threat posed by China to Asian countries like India, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Thursday.

Pompeo made those remarks in response to a question during the virtual Brussels Forum 2020 of the German Marshall Fund.

"We're going to make sure we're postured appropriately to counter the PLA. We think that the challenge of our times, and we're going to make sure we have resources in place to do that," Pompeo said.

This is bad news for China. An increased presence of American troops will put more pressure on the PLA.

Already, the burden of the truth seems to be cracking Beijing.

China has repeatedly said it did not lose a single soldier in the Galwan valley clash. But in its attempt at sabre rattling, the Global Times has made a slip.

In an article published in the Global Times, Xu Hijin, the editor, sang praises of the PLA, calling it a glorious army and threatening India.

But towards the end of his piece, he spilled the beans.

"The dead have been treated with the highest respect in the military, and that information will eventually be reported to the society at the right time, so that heroes can be honored and remembered as they deserve," he wrote.

Apparently, this was an attempt to pacify the families of the soldiers who died in the Galwan face off.

Reports say there's also a video that has gone viral in China. It shows families of the Chinese soliders killed in action.

They are outraged, because the soliders were given no honour or acknowledgement.

And this is a matter of record -- China has so far denied any casualties.

Also, before he wrote that article, he sent out a tweet, saying China wasn’t releasing its casualty numbers as a goodwill measure -- to avoid stoking public mood.

And thanks to him, we now know the truth.

China is exposed. Thanks to Global Times editor

China's PR campaign is fuelled by lies, falsehoods and cover ups.

Adding to its list of cover ups are three stories. The first is of Zhang Zhan -- a citizen journalist who reported from Wuhan during the early months of the coronavirus pandemic.

She has been reportedly charged by Chinese authorities.

She stands accused of “picking quarrels and provoking trouble" through her reporting on the outbreak.

During her time on the ground in Wuhan she posted what she saw on social media, including Twitter and YouTube, platforms which are both blocked in China but accessible by using virtual private networks.

Zhang also penned an article critical of the Chinese government’s strict response to the outbreak, raising allegations authorities were covering up the true scale of the epidemic.

The citizen journalist was detained by Shanghai police in May, two days after her last uploaded Youtube video.

Apart from silencing dissenting voices, China has also hidden a flood. And no, this is not a metaphor.

The Chongqing Municipal Hydrological Monitoring Station on Monday (June 22) issued its first red alert flood warning in 80 years for the Qijiang River. It is predicted that there will be severe flooding in the area within 8 hours.

Reports say roads have been buried under four metres of water. And people have been trapped inside their homes.

But China -- as observed -- is trying to hide this.

And why?

Because this flood washes away China's careful narrative.

It calls itself an infra superpower, and has been using infrastructure projects to tighten its grip on the world.

The Three Gorges Dam, one of the largest hydropower projects in the world, faces a potential collapse due to the flooding.

China, of course, denies this. But the pictures speak for themselves.

Infrastructure development has been the backbone of china's world domination plans. And the Belt and Road Initiative was its vehicle. But it has broken down.

Projects are delayed; participating nations want debt relief; and China is losing contracts.

The latest setback comes from Kenya.

A Kenyan court has declared a railway contract with china illegal.

China's nefarious designs are being exposed, and its PR machinery certainly seems to be on the backfoot.

Gravitas: India-China standoffs: A timeline

Striking a conciliatory tone after raising tensions in eastern Ladakh to a fever pitch, China on Thursday said it was ready to work with India to properly deal with the border standoff while noting that "suspicion and friction" was a wrong path that goes against the fundamental aspirations of people of the two countries.

In an interview to PTI, Chinese Ambassador Sun Weidon said India and China are able to properly manage their differences, and called upon New Delhi to avoid taking actions that may "complicate" the situation in eastern Ladakh. He went on to add that at present, the overall situation in the China-India border areas is "stable and controllable."

"We hope the Indian side meets the Chinese side halfway, avoids taking actions that may complicate the border situation and takes concrete actions to maintain stability in the border areas," he said.

The Indian and Chinese armies are locked in a bitter standoff in multiple locations in eastern Ladakh for the last six weeks, and the tension escalated manifold after 20 Indian soldiers were killed in a violent clash in Galwan Valley on June 15.

The Chinese ambassador said "mutual respect and support" is a sure way and meets the long-term interests of both countries, but at the same time, largely put the onus on India to ease tension in the region.

"China and India are both large developing countries and emerging economies with more than one billion people, and both have the historic mission of realising our own development and revitalisation," he said.

He further said: "China and India are willing and able to properly manage differences. In the last few weeks, both sides have held a series of diplomatic and military talks to cool down temperature even as Chinese military has increased its presence in all sensitive areas along the 3,500 km Line of Actual Control (LAC), the de-facto border.

At a weekly media briefing, External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Anurag Srivastava on Thursday said Chinese side departed from previously agreed understanding in respect the Galwan Valley area and sought to erect structures just across the LAC.

"When this attempt was foiled, Chinese troops took violent actions on June 15 that directly resulted in casualties," the spokesperson asserted.

He said the conduct of Chinese forces this year has been in complete disregard of all mutually agreed norms.

The ambassador said:"Mutual respect and support is a sure way and meets the long-term interests of both countries; suspicion and friction is a wrong path and goes against the fundamental aspiration of the two peoples."

"Under the guidance of the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, we are ready to work with the Indian side to properly deal with the current situation, jointly uphold peace and stability in the border areas, and ensure a sound and steady development of bilateral relations," Sun said.

In their historic informal summit in Chinese city of Wuhan in 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping underscored the importance of maintaining peace and tranquillity in all areas of the India-China border region in the interest of the development of bilateral relations.

The summit had taken place months after a 73-day military face-off between the two armies in Doklam that raised fears of a war between the two Asian giants. In the course of the interview, Sun repeated the Chinese government's stand -- which has been rejected by India -- that Indian troops are responsible for the Galwan Valley clashes, and indicated that the onus was on India to improve the situation in eastern Ladakh.

"The onus is not on China. The Indian side crossed the LAC (Line of Actual Control) for provocation and attacked the Chinese border troops. The Indian forces seriously violated agreements on border issues between the two countries," he said.

After the killing of 20 Indian soldiers in Galwan clashes, India called it "a premeditated and planned action by China" and sent a veiled warning to China saying "India wants peace but if provoked, India is capable of giving a befitting reply".

Referring to talks between foreign ministers of the two countries on June 17, the envoy said both sides agreed to "fairly address" the serious situation caused by the Galwan conflict and vowed to jointly follow the consensus reached at the commander-level meeting on June 6 to ease the situation as soon as possible.

Sun said China would not like to see a similar situation like the Galwan clashes, repeating Chinese foreign ministry's allegations that India was responsible for it.

The Ambassador said the two sides kept peace for decades in Galwan Valley, adding since the beginning of 2020, the Indian side has built facilities at or the crossing of the LAC in the Galwan Valley, "constantly changing the status quo of ground control.

On May 6, he claimed the Indian troops crossed the LAC in the Galwan Valley by night and trespassed into Chinese territory.

"They resorted to violent means to create a standoff between the two sides and built infrastructures in an attempt to maintain a permanent presence," he alleged.

India has been maintaining that Galwan Valley belongs to it and has strongly rejected China's claim of sovereignty over it.

Sun said Chinese side lodged representations on multiple occasions to the Indian side through military and diplomatic channels following the incident and that India agreed to withdraw its personnel from the area.

The two sides held Lt General-level talks on June 6 during which they agreed on disengagement of troops from all the standoff areas.

The ambassador said the Indian side promised in the talks that they would not cross the estuary of the Galwan river to patrol and build facilities, adding the two sides agreed to build observation posts on either side of the Galwan river mouth.

"However, after the commander-level meeting, when the situation on the ground was already easing, the Indian border troops copped out on the consensus reached at the commander-level meeting, demanded that China dismantle its observation post," he said.

India has been consistently maintaining that Galwan Valley clashes had taken place on the Indian side of the LAC. The envoy said actions taken by the Indian side are not in consonance with the spirit of several agreements signed by the two countries.

In an interview to PTI, Chinese Ambassador Sun Weidon said India and China are able to properly manage their differences, and called upon New Delhi to avoid taking actions that may "complicate" the situation in eastern Ladakh. He went on to add that at present, the overall situation in the China-India border areas is "stable and controllable." "We hope the Indian side meets the Chinese side halfway, avoids taking actions that may complicate the border situation and takes concrete actions to maintain stability in the border areas," he said. The ambassador said:"Mutual respect and support is a sure way and meets the long-term interests of both countries; suspicion and friction is a wrong path and goes against the fundamental aspiration of the two peoples." "Under the guidance of the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, we are ready to work with the Indian side to properly deal with the current situation, jointly uphold peace and stability in the border areas, and ensure a sound and steady development of bilateral relations," Sun said.

India, China willing and able to properly manage differences: Chinese Ambassador Sun

The clout of China, or the authoritative regime of Xi Jinping to be precise, is growing over modern day Russia, standing to hamper its alliance with India. And New Delhi should be worried.

The China-Russia axis is not just about economics. Both countries have similar origins and the same ideological core.

In the early 20th century, both China and Russia -- then known as the Soviet Union -- were in the middle of communist revolutions.

In Russia, it was Joseph Stalin who rose to power.

Stalin's Russia then actively helped Mao Zedong to take power in China.

In fact, Mao even trained both communist leaders.

Both had a cult of personality -- that gave them complete control over their countries.

Several years later, the Soviet Union collapsed, but communism didn't die.

China took lessons from the fall of the Soviet Union, and created a new and uglier brand of communism.

Today, the Communist Party has complete control on China. It wants to bring weaker nations under its sphere of influence, and mould international institutions using Chinese characteristics.

Russia, which forgot a pandemic on Wednesday to celebrate the success of Stalin against the Nazis, has found an old best friend in China.

Both China and Russia share similar values on the global stage. They are lead by strong leaders -- just like the times of Mao and Stalin -- Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin respectively.

Both leaders enjoy a cult of personality that is unrivalled. Their grip on power is absolute, and their friendship is there for the world to see.

Last year, at Xi's birthday, Putin had arrived bearing gifts -- a giant box of ice cream to be exact.

There are many such moments that stand out in the friendship of Putin and Xi. They have done photo-ops together; they have unveiled pandas at the Moscow zoo together; and they have cooked together, and that too not once, but twice.

In 2018, Putin made dumplings with Xi Jinping during a visit to China.

And when Xi came to Russia, they made pancakes together.

This bromance has resulted in a strong Russia-China partnership. And this is one friendship that India needs to be wary of.

The economic ties are the foundation of the Russia-China relationship.

China is Russia's biggest trading partner, and its largest Asian investor. As of September last year, Russia had a little over 12 per cent of its foreign currency assets in the Chinese currency.

Considering the various American sanctions on Russia, Moscow had shifted its reserves to the Euro and Yuan.

But despite being the best of friends, both countries don't see eye to eye on all issues. For example, China does not recognise Crimea as part of Russia.

Russia too hasn't backed China's claims over the entire South China sea.

And it is these differences that New Delhi needs to leverage -- if it wants to keep Russia on its side.

How India-Russia alliance faces its biggest threat in China

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Thursday there was nothing wrong in imports to spur growth but wondered why even Ganesha idols should be bought from China.

Importing raw materials that were not available in the country and needed for our industries was not wrong, she said addressing the BJP's Tamil Nadu unit workers via a virtual link.

"There is nothing wrong in imports that would spur production and create job opportunities and it can be done definitely," she said while speaking on the Centre's Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan initiative.

However, imports that could not bring benefits like employment opportunities and support growth would not help self-reliance and the Indian economy, she said.

Ganesha idols made of clay have been traditionally bought from the local potters during Ganesh Chaturthi festival every year, she said.

"But today, why even Ganesha idols are imported from China. Why such a situation can't we make a Ganesha idol from clay, is it the situation?" she asked.

She wondered if importing household products used every day like a soap-box, plastic items or incense sticks used for pooja purposes would support self-reliance especially when such products were made locally by Indian firms and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises.

Such a situation of importing things that are locally made and available should change and self-reliance is the basic idea behind the Aatmanirbhar Abhiyan, she said.

Self-reliance was practised in India for long, but it faded subsequently and now the Abhiyan initiative stood for local manufacturing, she said.

"Self-reliant India (Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan) does not mean that imports should not be done at all.

For industrial growth and creation of job opportunities here, you may please do whatever imports that are needed.

“In her speech in Tamil, she referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as "Modi Ayya (sir)," and listed out the "achievements" of the government in the past one year after her party returned to power at the Centre.

She praised the valour of Havildar K Palani from Tamil Nadu who was among the 20 soldiers killed in a clash with Chinese troops at Ladakh on June 15.

'Why even Ganesha idols are imported from China?', asks Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman

Pakistan’s foreign minister has "warned" neighbouring India to refrain from launching any attacks on his country, saying that Islamabad would respond with full force if New Delhi embarks on “any misadventure.”

Shah Mahmood Qureshi claimed that India was plotting an attack on Pakistan, allegedly to divert attention from a recent deadly clash between India and China in a disputed area of the Himalayas that killed at least 20 Indian soldiers.

Chinese and Indian military commanders have meanwhile agreed to disengage their forces in the disputed area.

Qureshi alleged that India, “after being beaten and embarrassed” by China in the Himalayan incident was trying to find an excuse for an operation against Pakistan.

He, in his comments broadcast by Geo TV, offered no evidence for his allegations.

On Tuesday, Qureshi condemned India’s move ordering Pakistan’s diplomatic mission in New Delhi to reduce its staff by half within a week. The Indian foreign ministry said it would do the same in Islamabad after two Indian Embassy employees were seized at gunpoint in Pakistan.

Earlier, Pakistani authorities had said that two people, identified as drivers for the Indian High Commission, were arrested when they hit a pedestrian and tried to flee. They said police searched the vehicle and found counterfeit currency inside.

The two were released to the high commission and were transported to the border.

Pakistani and Indian forces have been on maximum alert since last year's airstrike by New Delhi -- in response to the Pulwama terror attack.
