The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved a roughly Rs 110 billion project by the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) to create six new Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft for the Indian Air Force on Wednesday.

This is in addition to the Committee's approval of a roughly $3 billion contract for the IAF to purchase 56 C-295MW transport planes to replace its ageing fleet of Avro 748 transport planes, which first flew in 1961.

The AEW&C project, which received an initial "approval of necessity" from the defence ministry in December of last year, is particularly important because Pakistan and China are far ahead of India in this area.

What does AEW&C stand for?

The AEW&C, or "eyes in the sky," can detect and track any flying object in the sky faster than ground-based radars, including incoming fighters, cruise missiles, and drones.

They can also serve as an airborne control room for missions, as well as a monitoring station for ships at sea.

The six will join the IAF's existing fleet, which includes three Israeli Phalcon AWACS on Ilyushin-76 transport planes and two indigenous "Netra" AEW&C planes on Embraer planes.

During the India-Pakistan aerial combat along the Line of Control and International Border on February 27, 2019, airborne warning planes came into clear focus.

In order to intercept oncoming Pakistan Air Force strike formations, IAF pilots depended significantly on backup from the IAF's Netra and A-50 jets, which observed PAF fighters' movements and vectored IAF defenders to attempt an intercept.

India and Russia held consultation on Afghanistan on Wednesday. In this, New Delhi pointed out that since Pakistan has links with Taliban and has been supporting international terror groups such as Jaish-e-Mohammed (JEM) and lashkar-e-taiba (LET), Islamabad has "special responsibility" to ensure that Afghan soil is not used to spread terrorism.

During the talks, India highlighted Pakistan's notorious spy agency ISI's links with LET and JEM, something that has been raised privately and publicly many times.

The talks were led by Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and the visiting Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, General Nikolay Patrushev. This is the first visit of Patrushev to any foreign country after emergence of Taliban as the dominant force in Afghanistan.

Both sides saw the issue of terrorism emanating from Afghanistan as a threat to India and Central Asia. Three central Asian states, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan share border with Afghanistan, and the fear is that crisis can impact them as well. Both New Delhi and Moscow share close ties with these central Asian countries, with Russia being a major security and economic partner due to soviet connect.

During the talks, India expressed concerns over security of Afghan minorities — Hindus and Sikhs. In August, India evacuated over 500 people, more of 200 of which were Afghans, mainly from minority — Hindus and Sikhs.

A release by the Russian embassy on Doval-Nikolay talks said, both sides, "touched upon humanitarian and migration problems in this country, as well as prospects for the Russian-Indian joint efforts aimed at creating conditions for launching a peaceful settlement process on the basis of an intra-Afghan dialogue."

While both sides agreed that " that there is a lot of uncertainty" as situation "evolves rapidly in Afghanistan", sources explained that they had convergence of views on many issues — like the need for Taliban to adhere to promises and commitments it had made —like rights of women, minorities, flow of weapons to terror groups and smuggling across the Afghan border, Afghanistan becoming the hub of opium production and Islamic radicalization and extremism.

Both, Moscow and New Delhi, have decided to engage in concrete " forms of future bilateral cooperation" which includes close coordination, upgrading consultations and exchange of information.

The visiting top security official called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs minister Dr S Jaishankar. A release from the Indian PMO said, "Prime Minister expressed his appreciation for the visit of the Russian delegation led by Secretary Patrushev at a time when major changes are taking place in the region" and asked him to convey "his thanks to President Putin for his constant attention towards the India-Russia Partnership."

India, Russia consultations on Afghanistan in Delhi on Wednesday was a direct outcome of the Indian PM Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin's talks on 24th August. In the 45 minute long conversation, both decided to form a "permanent bilateral channel" for consultations on Afghanistan.

The Russian release of Patrushev's call on of PM Modi said, "The two Sides reaffirmed their intention to strengthen coordination in the field of enhancing the regional stability, including on the Afghan direction".

Pak should ensure Afghan soil is not used to spread terrorism: India to Russia

India and Russia will hold consultations in Delhi on Wednesday on the ongoing situation in Afghanistan, a direct outcome of the talks held between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 24.

In the 45-minute-long conversation, both the leaders had decided to form a “permanent bilateral channel” for consultations on Afghanistan.

The Wednesday talks would be led by Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and the visiting Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation General Nikolai Patrushev.

A release by the Ministry of External Affairs said, “At the invitation of National Security Adviser Ajit K Doval, the Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, General Nikolay Patrushev is visiting India for high-level India-Russia inter-governmental consultations on Afghanistan from 7-8 September 2021.”

The meeting comes hours after the Taliban announced the name of new leaders of its government. Mullah Hassan Akhund was named as the Prime Minister and he will have two deputies—Mullah Baradar and Mawlavi Hannafi. Sirajuddin Haqqani was named as the interior minister and Amir Khan Muttaqi was chosen as the foreign minister.

Notably, all of them are on the UN terror list, while Sirajuddin Haqqani carries a bounty of $5 million announced by the FBI.

Both India and Russia view Afghanistan as a security challenge. India believes that a turmoil in Afghanistan may pave way for Pakistan-based terror groups to emerge, and for Russia, a spillover of the crisis may have an impact on the former Soviet countries like Uzbekistan, Tajikistan.

Moreover, Modi and Putin are also expected to meet during the BRICS virtual summit on Thursday, hosted by New Delhi.

Apart from that, Putin is expected to visit India later this month for the much-awaited annual India-Russia bilateral summit and deliver the first units of the S-400 Air Defence system.

India, Russia to hold consultations on Afghanistan on Sept 8 in Delhi

Afghanistan crisis will be one of the key focus at the 13th BRICS summit to be hosted by India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday.

BRICS' leaders will be meeting virtually for the summit, and it is for the second time in a row the meet is happening virtually due to the ongoing Covid crisis.

It is learnt that the leaders are expected to underscore the priority of fighting terrorism, including preventing attempts by terror organisations to use Afghanistan as a sanctuary to carry out attacks against other countries. Worry over Afghanistan becoming a safe haven for terror groups, especially Pakistan based international terror groups such as LeT, JeM has been the message from New Delhi to many of its partners including Russia, which is a BRICS member country.

A visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the US later this month is likely to depend on the finality over hosting of the first in-person summit of the Quad leaders by the Biden administration, people familiar with the development said on Saturday.

The tentative schedule explored for the visit was between September 22-27 and the preparations were focused on three segments -- Modi's address at the UN General Assembly in New York, participation at the proposed Quad summit in Washington and a bilateral meeting with President Joe Biden, they said.

However, the sudden decision by Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga to step down by the end of September triggered uncertainty over the US hosting of the in-person Quad summit as

Tokyo is learnt to have requested for a hybrid format for the talks.

The people cited above said there was no final decision yet on the proposed visit to the US by Modi in view of the uncertainty over the holding of the Quad summit among the leaders of the US, India, Japan and Australia in Washington.

Suga, who became prime minister of Japan a year ago after Shinzo Abe stepped down, announced on Friday that he will not seek re-election as leader of the Liberal Democrat Party (LDP) at the end of September.

His announcement and the political turmoil in Tokyo have also thrown into doubt the holding of the in-person India-Japan summit for the third consecutive year.

The annual summit between Modi and his then Japanese counterpart Abe was cancelled in December 2019 in Guwahati in the wake of massive protests rocking the Assam city over the amended citizenship law.

In 2020, the summit could not be held due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The people cited above said India and the US held a series of meetings as part of preparations for Modi's visit to the US, which if it takes place, will be the first one after Biden took charge of the US in January.

It is learnt that the issue figured during Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla's recent meetings in Washington.

The Biden administration has put cooperation with India a key aspect of its overall foreign policy priorities on the Indo-Pacific, a region that has witnessed growing Chinese military assertiveness.

The US has been looking at convening the in-person summit of the leaders of Quad to boost practical cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region as well as to send a strong signal about Washington's commitment to the grouping.

In March, President Biden hosted the first-ever summit of the Quad leaders in the virtual format that vowed to strive for an Indo-Pacific region that is free, open, inclusive, anchored by democratic values, and unconstrained by coercion, sending an apparent message to China.

The last time Modi visited the US was in September 2019 when he and then US President Donald Trump addressed the Howdy Modi event in Houston.

If Modi's visit takes place, then it could signal a new phase in the two-way strategic engagement between India and the US.

The Afghan crisis as well as developments in the Indo-Pacific region could be the major focus areas for discussion between the two sides. US Secretary of state Antony Blinken paid a two-day visit to India in July. Before that, US Defence Secretary Lloyd J Austin had paid a three-day visit to New Delhi in March.

India skipper Virat Kohli on Thursday became the fastest batsman in the history of the game to register 23,000 international runs.

Kohli achieved the feat in the opening session of the opening day of the fourth Test against England here at the Oval on Thursday. The Indian skipper took just 490 innings to register the feat while Sachin Tendulkar had taken 522 innings to achieve the same milestone. Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting had taken 544 innings to score 23,000 international runs.

Kohli has been going through a lean patch of late as he has not registered a single ton in international cricket for 51 innings. He last scored a century way back in 2019 against Bangladesh at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

Coming back to the ongoing match, India lost the wickets of Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Cheteshwar Pujara as England dominated the opening session of the fourth Test at the Kennington Oval.

At lunch, India`s score read 54/3 with Kohli (18*) and Ravindra Jadeja (2*) unbeaten at the crease. In the first session, 25 overs were bowled and the English bowlers made sure they repaid the faith shown by skipper Joe Root as he won the toss and decided to bowl.

Sent into bat, the Indian openers -- Rohit and Rahul -- mixed caution with aggression and the duo saw out the opening spells of James Anderson and Ollie Robinson. However, the introduction of Chris Woakes paid off straight away as he dismissed Rohit (11), ending the 28-run opening stand.

Pujara next joined Rahul in the middle and the duo found the going tough and they did not score a single run for almost five overs, and this eventually brought about a wicket, as Rahul (17) was trapped in front by Ollie Robinson, reducing India to 28/2.

Pujara (4) also failed to leave a mark with the bat as he chased a wide delivery and his wicket was grabbed by James Anderson, reducing India to 39/3 in the 20th over. In the end, Kohli and Jadeja ensured that India went into the lunch break without losing any further wicket.

India would resume exports of COVID-19 vaccines only after its own interests are taken care of, a health ministry official said on Thursday.

This comes in as a recent surge in immunisations raised hopes of foreign sales that have been barred since mid-April.

"Every country works with an aim of keeping its people, economy and social system safe," Rajesh Bhushan told a weekly news conference.

Meanwhile, India reported the biggest single-day rise in COVID-19 cases in two months today, as the government worries about the virus spreading from the most-affected Kerala state, schools reopening, and the start of the festival season.

Kerala accounted for nearly 70 per cent of the 47,092 new infections and a third of deaths.

This comes a week after it celebrated its biggest festival during which family and social gatherings were common.

India has so far administered 662 million doses, with at least one dose in 54 per cent of its 944 million adults and the required two doses in 16 per cent.

India would resume exports of COVID-19 vaccines only after its own interests are taken care of, a health ministry official said on Thursday. This comes in as a recent surge in immunisations raised hopes of foreign sales that have been barred since mid-April.

"It has been 20 years of training, matches, travel, wins, losses, strapped feet, jet lag, joy and brotherhood. Today I officially retire from the game I love the most. Bittersweet, but grateful," Steyn said in a statement.

Steyn has now talked about his time in India and how the crowd loved him. “India is crazy! It’s the closest you’re going to be to feeling like a rock star. You’re treated like a Hollywood or Bollywood star. Cricket is just crazy there. You go to the airport and you’re bombarded, you go to practice and there are 10 000 people watching. It’s doubtful I’ll ever have that experience in my life again with anything that I do,”.

Dale Steyn, who picked up 699 wickets across all three formats and is his country's highest wicket-taker, also talked about some of the greatest batsmen in the game of cricket and said that they did not always let a bowler settle into a rhythm.

“Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting were amazing batters (and sometimes you’d just nod in appreciation). They’re aware of your skills too so they’re trying to come out of this contest between batter and bowler unscathed, trying to get away with it without getting out. They only have one chance, where I at least get six balls,” Steyn was quoted as saying in SA Cricketmag.

Steyn's 20-year long career was marred with injuries. His issues with his shoulder restricted him to only 11 tests after 2015.

The United States government was aware of Pakistan’s nuclear programme early in January 1979, according to a newly declassified American government documents that were made accessible recently.

“The US state department knew Pakistan’s uranium enrichment programme using gas centrifuge technology way back in January 1979, along with a nascent enrichment facility in Kahuta,” the documents released on Tuesday stated.

The report was declassified by the National Security Archive, a non-government organisation that seeks to challenge government secrecy, published state department telegrams and internal memorandums from the time.

Pakistan had declared itself to be a nuclear state only in 1998, shortly after India conducted its second Pokhran test. India had conducted its first nuclear test in May 1974 under the codename ‘Smiling Buddha’.

The documents further revealed that the Jimmy Carter-led administration refused to confront Pakistan for fear of alienating the Islamic country at a time of “challenging developments” in the region—the growing Soviet Union influence in Afghanistan and the Iranian revolution.

“Pakistan is moving rapidly and secretly towards the construction of facilities which will give it nuclear explosive capability perhaps within two to four years,” wrote Harold Saunders, the then assistant secretary of state for Near Eastern and South Asian affairs, and Thomas Pickering, then assistant secretary for oceans, international environmental, and scientific affairs, to then secretary of state Cyrus Vance in January 1979.

“The then administration also worried that pushing too hard on proliferation concerns could alienate Pakistan—a regional counterweight to Soviet partner India - and produce greater instability in the region,” the archive said.

“Ultimately, the archive said, “Carter held back from confronting Islamabad over its nuclear programme.”

The government had imposed a nationwide lockdown at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic last year.

This year, the massive second wave of the pandemic hit the country in the middle of April, which forced states to impose fresh restrictions.

However, the economy has still not returned to the pre-COVID level.

In value terms, the GDP stood at Rs 32,38,020 crore in April-June 2021-22, lower than Rs 35,66,708 crore in the corresponding period of the 2019-20 financial year.

With a view to containing the second wave of the pandemic, localised and calibrated lockdowns were imposed during the first quarter of 2021-22, it added.

Restrictions were imposed on the economic activities not deemed essential, as also on the movement of people.

"The lockdown instructions in various States were duly considered by the National Statistical Office. The impact on economic activities and the data collection mechanisms owing to COVID-19 pandemic has an effect on the Quarterly GDP estimates also.

"The impact of these measures on overall economic activity are embedded in source data," it stated.
According to the NSO data, gross value added (GVA) growth in the manufacturing sector accelerated to 49.6 per cent in the first quarter of 2021-22, compared to a contraction 36 per cent a year ago.

Farm sector GVA growth was up at 4.5 per cent, compared to 3.5 per cent earlier.

Construction sector GVA grew by 68.3 per cent compared to 49.5 per cent contraction earlier. Mining sector grew by 18.6 per cent, as against a contraction of 17.2 per cent a year ago.

Electricity, gas, water supply and other utility services segment grew by 14.3 per cent in the first quarter of this fiscal, against 9.9 per cent contraction a year ago.

Similarly, trade, hotel, transport, communication and services related to broadcasting grew by 34.3 per cent compared to 48.1 per cent contraction earlier.

Financial, real estate and professional services grew by 3.7 per cent in Q1 FY22 compared to a contraction of 5 per cent.

Public administration, defence and other services grew at 5.8 per cent during the quarter under review, compared to (-) 10.2 per cent a year earlier.

Meanwhile, China has posted a growth of 7.9 per cent in the April-June period of 2021.

According to top officials, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) will be making only minor tweaks to its heavy-lifter rocket GSLV Mk3, as the agency gears up for Human Spaceflight missions. These changes to its most-advanced rocket are meant to improve its reliability for undertaking the daunting task of lifting a human-carrying spacecraft into orbit. Additional emphasis would also be paid to the manufacturing process of the rocket and its components.

ISRO is working towards performing two unmanned flights of Gaganyaan, in order to test and certify its systems, before the actual Human Spaceflight. Mandatory testing and qualifications apart, ISRO will also be launching two satellites that are meant to provide communications support for its human-carrying spacecraft. Known as IDRSS (Indian Data Relay System Satellites), they would be placed nearly 36,000km above the equator (where they would remain in sync with the earth’s rotation or at a constant position when seen from earth) and will offer near-total tracking and communication with India’s space assets. It must be noted that a constellation of 3 satellites positioned in a 36,000km orbit can offer real-time, 24/7 monitoring of almost the entire earth.

ISRO intends to launch two such IDRSS satellites prior to the Gaganyaan Human Spaceflight. Dr. K.Sivan, Chairman, ISRO, told WION that the Gaganyaan spacecraft would be placed in a low earth orbit, 400kms above the earth. He added that ISRO was looking at launching the IDRSS satellites in 2022. For context, when Gaganyaan is orbiting the earth, but not visible to the ground stations, Gaganyaan can send its signals and communicate with the IDRSS satellites up above, which in turn would relay it down to the ground stations and vice versa. This would ensure constant communication between the astronauts and their mission control on earth.

Referring to the orbital placement of Gaganyaan, he said, "The rocket will put the 7.5ton Gaganyaan module into a 170x400kms orbit (170kms from earth and 400kms from earth at its nearest and farthest points in orbit respectively). Thereafter, the on-board propulsion will raise the Gaganyaan module to a uniform 400km (Low earth orbit). He also added that, the same propulsion system would be used to lower the orbit and bring the spacecraft closer to the earth to aid re-entry.

When queried about the astronauts' mission duration in space and the splash-landing site (Bay of Bengal or Arabian Sea), he said that it would be decided in due course.

On the testing of rocket engines, Dr. S. Somanath, Director of Vikram Sarabhai Space Center, told Zee Media that minor tweaks would be made to the GSLV Mk3 rocket, in terms of materials being used. However, he added that these would be very minor changes that are aimed at improving reliability and not fundamental, technological ones. Also, the space agency will be laying additional emphasis on the manufacturing process of the rocket and its components. It is pertinent to recall that the GSLV Mk3, which is to be used for Gaganyaan, has had complete success in all its four flights thus far.

Regarding the engines being used to propel the Gaganyaan spacecraft, he said that it was a cluster of five engines. Here too, the engines being used are the tried and tested 440N thrust engines that are in use in the GSAT series of satellites. A system demonstration model comprising a cluster of five engines was recently test fired successfully by ISRO, for a duration of 450 seconds. In the coming months, ISRO will be performing a long duration test-fire of its engines, in order to accumulate more data for human-rating of the entire rocket. It essentially means that a rocket which is used for hauling cargo (satellites) to space is being modified and certified for carrying humans, while ensuring higher safety and reliability.

In the western part of Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura district, more than 29 people, aged between two to 45 years, had been infected with a mystery fever, which has been identified as scrub typhus.

Following complaints of infection in the area, medical teams collected samples from people at Koh village, which found that more people have been infected with scrub typhus.

Apart from Mathura, other districts like Firozabad and Mainpuri have also been witnessing a spike in similar cases cases. Health officials have sounded alter following a surge in cases.

On August 27, there were reports that even Assam has also registered cases of scrub typhus. According to local media reports, the state health department had to temporarily shit down a Covid hospital in Guwahati where 29 cases were.

What is scrub typhus?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), scrub typhus, also known as bush typhus, is a disease caused by a bacteria called Orientia Tsutsugamushi. The infection spreads to people through bites of infected chiggers (larval mites).

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms of scrub typhus usually begin within 10 days of being bitten. Signs and symptoms may include: Fever and chills, headache, body aches and muscle pain, a dark, scab-like region at the site of the chigger bite (also known as eschar), mental changes, ranging from confusion to coma, enlarged lymph nodes and rash.

CDC states that people with severe illness may develop organ failure and bleeding, which can be fatal if left untreated.

Is there any vaccine for the prevention of scrub typhus?

According to CDC, no vaccine is available to prevent scrub typhus at the moment. The organisation has suggested to avoid contact with anyone infected by chiggers. It has also asked to take precaution while travelling to areas where scrub typhus is common, areas with lots of vegetation and brush where chiggers may be found.

How to treat the infection?

The CDC says that if someone gets infected by scrub typhus, the person should be treated with the antibiotic doxycycline. People who are treated early with doxycycline usually recover quickly, according to the agency.

It has further advised people to dress children in clothing that covers arms and legs, or cover crib, stroller, and baby carrier with mosquito netting in order to keep scrub typhus at bay. It also asked them to treat clothing and gear with 0.5% permethrin as it kills chiggers.

Any other countries where scrub typhus has been reported?

Apart from India, cases of scrub typhus have been reported from rural areas of Indonesia, China, Japan and northern Australia.

Also read | What is the West Nile virus, the infection Russia has warned may spread? Is there any vaccine for the prevention of scrub typhus? According to CDC, no vaccine is available to prevent scrub typhus at the moment. The organisation has suggested to avoid contact with anyone infected by chiggers. It has also asked to take precaution while travelling to areas where scrub typhus is common, areas with lots of vegetation and brush where chiggers may be found. How to treat the infection? India's Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Monday that India wants a solution to the border dispute with China through dialogue and asserted that the government would never allow the sanctity of borders to be violated.

The Modi government has made it clear to the forces that any unilateral action on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) should not be ignored, he said.

Singh was delivering virtually the third Balramji Dass Tandon Memorial Lecture organised by Panjab University on the issue of national security.

The defence minister said that there have been "perception differences" on the border with China. "Despite this, there are some agreements, protocols which the armies of both countries follow to conduct patrols." Referring to the clashes in eastern Ladakh last year, Singh said Chinese forces had ignored the "agreed protocols".

"We cannot allow the Chinese Army PLA to act on the LAC in a unilateral manner under any circumstances.

"That is what the Indian Army did that day in Galwan and bravely confronted the PLA soldiers and forced them to retreat," he said while terming it as a "historic" incident.

Recalling the Galwan incident, he said the bravery, valour and restraint shown by the Indian Army are incomparable and unparalleled.

In the first deadly clash in the border area in nearly five decades, 20 Indian soldiers were killed on June 15 last year in the Galwan Valley in fierce hand-to-hand combat with Chinese troops, triggering a large deployment of troops and heavy weaponry by both armies at the friction points in eastern Ladakh.

In February, China officially acknowledged that five Chinese military officers and soldiers were killed in the clashes with the Indian Army though it is widely believed that the death toll was higher.

In a significant forward movement towards the restoration of peace and tranquility in the region, the Indian and Chinese armies completed the disengagement process and restored the pre-standoff ground position in Gogra in eastern Ladakh after 15 months.

The development came after the 12th round of military talks between the two sides on July 31 at the Chushul-Moldo meeting point in eastern Ladakh.

Earlier, the Indian and Chinese frontline troops had conducted the first synchronised disengagement at the south and north banks of the Pangong lake in February.

India wants solution to border dispute with China through dialogue, won't allow unilateral action: Defence Minister

A scientist involved in the mathematical modelling of India’s COVID-19 pandemic on Monday claimed that the country is likely to see the third wave peaking between October and November if a more virulent mutant than the existing ones emerges by September.

He, however, said that the infection’s intensity would be much lower than the second wave,

Manindra Agrawal, an IIT-Kanpur scientist who is part of the three-member team of experts that have been tasked with predicting any surge in infections, said if no new virulent emerges, then the situation is unlikely to change.

He said if the third wave peaks, the country may see only 1 lakh (100,000) daily cases as against more than 4 lakh (400,000) when the devastating second wave was at its peak in May.

“Status Quo is when no new mutant comes and New Variant is when 50% more infectious mutant comes by September. As one can see, the only scenario with some semblance of third wave is New Variant one for epsilon = 1/33. In this scenario, new cases rise to 1 lakh per day,” Agrawal tweeted.

Agrawal said the fresh data comprising the vaccinations that have taken place in July and August, the sero-surveys that gave insights about the anti-bodies were factored in while assuming the scenarios.

Last month, the model suggested that the third wave could peak between October and November and the daily cases could surge between 1.5 lakh to 2 lakh every day if a more virulent mutant of SARS-CoV2 triggers fresh infections.

On Monday, India recorded 42,909 cases, a drop of 4.7 per cent from Sunday. About 380 deaths were reported, according to India’s health ministry.

Active cases constitute 1.15% of total cases, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate stands 97.51 per cent, the Union Health Ministry said.

Launching rockets and placing satellites in orbit has been a routine business for the Indian Space Research Organization. Meanwhile, Gaganyaan (Sanskrit for SkyCraft), a hugely complex mission to send Indian astronauts to space, is a work in progress.

Recently, ISRO announced the successful completion of a crucial test of the Gaganyaan spacecraft’s propulsion system. This cluster of engines would help Indian astronauts remain in orbit and also aid their safe return.

WION spoke to Chairman ISRO, Dr K Sivan, and Director, Vikram Sarabhai Space Center, Dr S Somanath, to throw light on the latest test and the mission plan.

The launch of satellites and human-carrying spacecraft are quite similar, but the latter is exponentially more sophisticated in terms of the technology and reliability that has to be developed. In both cases, the payload sits on the top-most portion of the rocket.

The expendable rocket’s task ends about 16-20 minutes after lift-off and it falls back into the sea (in a phased manner), after ejecting the satellite.

Once placed into orbit, the satellite/spacecraft is an independent entity in space that needs to navigate and propel itself, without the powerful propulsion of the rocket that got it up there.

The payload (satellite or the module carrying astronauts) must stay in orbit for a designated mission time, while enduring the harsh conditions of zero-gravity, severe temperature variations, and orbital movement at very high speeds.

For context, the International Space Station, which continues to orbit the earth, moves at a whopping 7km/second or 27,850km/hour.

While satellites stay in orbit for many years, India’s Gaganyaan mission is meant to remain in orbit for upto a week.

This process of staying in a designated orbit requires the use of the spacecraft’s own engines. It was this system, Gaganyaan Service Module Propulsion System – System Demonstration Model (SDM), that was tested a few days ago.

The GSLV Mk3, India’s heaviest rocket, is meant to carry the Gaganyaan to space. "The launch vehicle will put the 7.5ton Gaganyaan module into 170x400km orbit (170kms from earth and 400kms from earth at its nearest and farthest points in orbit respectively). Thereafter, the system which we have now tested will raise the Gaganyaan module to a uniform 400kms orbit (Low earth orbit), "Dr. K. Sivan explained to Zee Media. He also added that, the same propulsion system would be used to lower the orbit and bring the spacecraft closer to the earth to aid re-entry.

On its website, ISRO mentions that the first hot test of the System Demonstration Model (SDM) of the Gaganyaan Service Module Propulsion System was done for a duration of 450seconds at the ISRO Propulsion Complex (IPRC), Mahendragiri, Tamil Nadu. The system performance met the test objectives and there was a close match with the pre-test predictions. Further, a series of hot tests are planned to simulate various mission conditions as well as off-nominal conditions, it added.

Then Dr S Somanath, Director, VSSC, ISRO, said that the Gaganyaan integrated module consists of two parts - Crew Module and Service Module. While the crew module will house astronauts, the service module will provide the propulsion to raise the orbit and later lower the orbit. "To slow down the spacecraft (which is traveling at nearly 7.5kms per second) and facilitate re-entry, we will fire the five engines (as used in the GISAT Satellites) on the service module. Once the re-entry is facilitated, the service module will detach and the crew module alone will make a controlled descent, with its parachutes and crew module propulsion systems, "he explained to Zee Media.

While the latest test is a boost for India's ambitious Human Spaceflight programme, it must be kept in mind that each propulsion system that goes into the GSLV Mk3 rocket and the spacecraft will be further tested for longer durations and various parameters. Such tests are part of the 'Human-rating' of the launch vehicle and its systems. It essentially means that a rocket that is used for hauling cargo (satellites) to space is being modified and certified for carrying humans, while ensuring higher safety and reliability.
