'Seek to play a...': PM Modi's message as he leaves for two-day Russia visit

The unique Jagannath Rath Yatra, also known as the Chariot festival, kicked off in the&nbsp;eastern Indian state of Odisha on Sunday (Jul 7). The festival believed to be as old as the Jagannath Temple in Puri, has seen the authorities deploy AI technology this year to better manage the crowd as millions of devotees gather to catch a glimpse of the deities and partake in the rituals.&nbsp;

Preparations for the security apparatus of the festival start months in advance as it is one of the biggest events of the year in India.&nbsp;

"This is the first time, as a pilot project, we are trying to use AI-based CCTV coverage where all those CCTV points which we have around 40 points where we have placed CCTV cameras. We would be using AI amalgamated with the CCTV system,"&nbsp;Additional DGP, Odisha, Dayal Gangwar was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

"We would also be using a drone system to identify the blind spots, identify the jam areas. We are also using drones along with the PA (Public address) system so that there are 4-5 identified spots every year where we normally face huge traffic jams and to help assist the police officers," he added.&nbsp;

According to&nbsp;Puri Superintendent of Police (SP) Pinak Mishra, as many as&nbsp;180 platoons (one platoon comprises 30 personnel) of security forces from both the state and central governments have been pressed into service to manage law and order.&nbsp;

The festival has ancient origins and features raths (chariots) of Lord Jagannath (an incarnation of Lord Vishnu), his brother Balbhadra and his sister Subhadra. The festival, much revered in this part of the world, is celebrated to commemorate the divine siblings' journey from their paternal home to their aunt's home.

During the festival,&nbsp;deities are brought out of the Jagannath Temple and placed on their chariots amidst chanting and drumming.

In New business activity, a leading indicator of demand, has risen since August 2021 and went up again in June.

This was led by a record high in international orders, the highest since the metric was introduced nearly a decade ago.

This is good news for the overall economy. India is already the world’s 7th largest services exporter according to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

The country’s economy, the 3rd largest in Asia, grew at 7.8 per cent in Q1 but economists expect a slowdown in the current fiscal.

The strong demand for services has led to hiring by service providers. Job creation has reached a 2-year high since August 2022, and the current hiring growth has been over 2 years.

However, there is a slight moderation in overall sentiment for next year with uncertainty and competition tempering optimism. “While service providers are confident about the business outlook for the year ahead, their optimism has cooled down in the last month,” said Bhandari.

On the upside, cost inflation has slowed down and is at a 4-month low. Less than 5 per cent of the firms passed on the cost burden to clients; therefore, service charges increased modestly.

A Reuters poll suggests that inflation will be below RBI’s medium-term target of 4 per cent this quarter but will pick up next quarter.

However, the central bank is still expected to cut rates to 6.25 per cent by the end of the year. 
The composite PMI came in at 60.9 in June, as expected and up from 60.5 in May.

Of the teaching staff dismissed, 20 were said to be from the Mumbai campus, 15 from Hyderabad, 14 from Guwahati, and six from Tuljapur in Maharashtra.&nbsp;

The TISS is a deemed university and is funded by the Indian government. However, in June last year, the government changed the UGC’s norms and brought the institute under the Centre’s administrative purview instead of its own governing bodies.

In an email sent to the newspaper on Friday (Jun 28) evening, the office of the officiating registrar, Anil Sutar dismissed any connection between the two events and said that the “institute tried its best for the release of grant from Tata Education Trust for the purpose of salary.”

It added that they made multiple attempts “through official correspondence and personal meetings” but the “decision regarding further extension of grant period has not yet been received.”&nbsp;

Sutar’s office, according to the Indian Express also said that “in the event of non-receipt of approval/grant from Tata Education Trust,” their services would come to an end with effect from June 30.

Acting Vice Chancellor Manoj Tiwari told the press that they had formed a committee to discuss the matter of bringing the institute under the Centre’s administrative purview with the Tata Education Trust.&nbsp;

He added, “If the grants are received, this can be reverted. But in case of no change in situation, there is no alternative. The institute will have to find alternative ways to run the courses.”&nbsp;

Former erstwhile Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee president and former minister Dharmapuri Srinivas passed away. According to his family, he had been suffering from illness for some time and breathed his last due to a heart attack at 3 am on Saturday. He was 76.

On Friday (June 28), Delhi received its highest-ever rainfall in the last 88 years.&nbsp;

The Indian Meteorological Department said that from 8:30 am on Thursday (June 27) to 8:30 am on Friday (June 28) Delhi received 228 mm of rainfall, which marked the highest 24-hour rainfall in June in the national capital since 1936 when 235.5 mm of rainfall was recorded.

The MET department said that IMD's Safdarjung airport observatory recorded 234.5mm of rainfall between June 1 to June 28, which is the third highest in the last 124 years.

"In order to ensure transparent, smooth and fair conduct of examinations through the National Testing Agency (NTA), the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education constituted a High-Level Committee of Experts to make recommendations on reform in the mechanism of examination process improvement in data security protocols and the structure and functioning of National Testing Agency," the ministry said.&nbsp;

India: CBI arrests two accused in NEET-UG paper leak case from Bihar's Patna

Members of Congress' student wing National Students Union of India (NSUI) on Thursday (June 27) barged into the office of NTA in Delhi's Okhla demanding to disband the testing agency.

The NSUI members stormed inside the office raising 'shut down NTA' slogans.

There was no immediate reaction from NTA officials about the incident.

The footage shared by NSUI on social media showed National President Varun Chaudhary locking the Delhi office.

<h2>President Murmu addresses NEET issue, says government will punish the guilty</h2>

Earlier today, President Droupadi Murmu while addressing a joint session of both Houses of Parliament, spoke about the irregularities in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET).

She said that the government is committed to investigating the paper leaks and the guilty in the matter will be punished.

"Sanctity and transparency are a must in government recruitments and examinations. The government is committed to conducting a fair investigation and ensure the most stringent punishment to those guilty in the recent incidents of paper leak," the president said and added that there is a need to move beyond "partisan politics" and adopt strong steps on this issue.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla condemns Emergency period, calls it 'black chapter' in history of India

The Noida International Airport has pushed its flight operations from September 2024 to next year due to construction delays.

It is now expected to launch its flight services by April 2025.

A delay in construction works was recently reported at the greenfield airport coming up in the Jewar area of Uttar Pradesh's Gautam Buddh Nagar district.

The airport&nbsp;is around 75 km away from India's capital Delhi.&nbsp;

"In view of the current construction status, we expect to begin commercial operations by the end of April 2025," the airport said in a statement on Monday.

"We are working together with our EPC (engineering, procurement and constructions) contractor Tata Projects Limited and with other stakeholders to keep the pace of construction activities and preparations for operational readiness high," the airport said.

The statement further said that the airport had signed agreements with several airlines for flight connections from Noida International Airport.

It underlined that the construction work was in advanced stages.

"Construction and development work at Noida International Airport is at an advanced stage and we continue to pass important milestones on the road to operational readiness. This is a large and complex project, and the next few weeks of construction activities are crucial," the airport said.

It is being constructed in four stages over a total area of more than 5,000 hectares.

The first phase of the construction is currently underway and was initially expected to finish in the month of September, making way for passenger flights from Jewar.

India’s Sensex breaches 78,000 for the first time ever

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team probing the alleged irregularities during the UGC-NET examination was allegedly attacked by locals in Bihar’s Nawada.&nbsp;

Soon after, the central investigation agency lodged a police complaint and four people have been arrested since then.

The incident, according to the officials, occurred on Saturday evening (June 22) when a team of CBI visited Kasiadeeh village in the area.

They said that a mob encircled the CBI vehicles and heckled the officers, following which they called the local police station which sent their force.

The police arrested four individuals allegedly involved in the attack and they have been sent to judicial custody, the officials added.

The statement further said that the matter was handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a thorough probe.

"To ensure the highest level of transparency and sanctity of the examination process, the Ministry of Education, Government of India has decided that the UGC-NET June 2024 Examination be cancelled," the statement said.&nbsp;

It further said that the exam will be conducted afresh at a date that will be announced later.

T20 World Cup: Can India be knocked out after Afghanistan's surprise win over Australia?

In a significant development amid the NEET fiasco, the Indian government notified the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024, which seeks to strictly punish those who leak question papers.

The stringent law, which aims to prevent unfair means during examinations, was passed by the Parliament in the month of February.

Under this act, if a person is found guilty of leaking a question paper or tampering with the answer sheet, he/she would face a prison term of a minimum of three years. The imprisonment can go up to five with a fine of Rs 1 million (11,967.05 USD).

In case the examination providers are aware of the possible offence but choose not to report it, they will risk a fine of up to Rs 1 crore (1,19,670.50 USD).

If during the probe it is established that a senior official of the service provider participated in or allowed the offence, he/she would be sentenced to a minimum of three years in prison which can go up to a maximum of 10 years and a fine of Rs 1 crore (1,19,670.50 USD).

<h2>'Strict action to be taken against any NTA official if found guilty,' says education minister</h2>

The move comes a day after Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that the Centre will form a high-level committee to review the functioning of the National Testing Agency (NTA).

“We are committed to holding zero-error exams, and a high-level committee is being formed to improve NTA functioning,” Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said at a press briefing.&nbsp;

"Recommendations will be expected from that high-level committee to further improve NTA, its structure, functioning, examination process, transparency and data security protocol. Strict action will be taken against any official of NTA if found guilty,” he said.

He then ensured that the government would not compromise with transparency and would safeguard the students’ rights.

In case the examination providers are aware of the possible offence but choose not to report it, they will risk a fine of up to Rs 1 crore (1,19,670.50 USD). If during the probe it is established that a senior official of the service provider participated in or allowed the offence, he/she would be sentenced to a minimum of three years in prison which can go up to a maximum of 10 years and a fine of Rs 1 crore (1,19,670.50 USD). In response to Canada's so-called 'moment of silence', the Indian Consulate General in Vancouver announced a memorial service in memory of 329 people killed in the 1985 Khalistani bombing of an Air India Kanishka aircraft.

The memorial service is scheduled to be held later this week on Sunday (June 23).

Taking to X, the Indian Consulate General said, "India stands at the forefront of countering the menace of terrorism and works closely with all nations to tackle this global threat. 23 June 2024 marks the 39th anniversary of the cowardly terrorist bombing of Air India flight 182 (Kanishka), in which 329 innocent victims, including 86 children, lost their lives in one of the most heinous terror-related air disasters in the history of civil aviation."

<h2>India summons Canada envoy over Khalistan slogans at event attended by Trudeau</h2>

Earlier, India had summoned the Canadian deputy high commissioner over the raising of pro-Khalistan slogans at an event in Toronto, Canada, which was attended by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and other political leaders.

"The Government of India's deep concern and strong protest was conveyed at such disturbing actions being allowed to continue unchecked at the event. This illustrates once again the political space that has been given in Canada to separatism, extremism and violence," said the Ministry of External Affairs in a statement.

Trudeau as well as opposition leader Pierre Poilievre attended the Khalsa Day celebrations in Toronto on Sunday (Apr 28) where loud chants of pro-Khalistan slogans were raised.

As the Canadian prime minister was set to address the public to mark Khalsa Day, the "Khalistan Zindabad" chants got louder, as seen in the video released by Canada-based CPAC TV.

NDP leader Jagmeet Singh and Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow were also present at the event.

"The Government of India's deep concern and strong protest was conveyed at such disturbing actions being allowed to continue unchecked at the event. This illustrates once again the political space that has been given in Canada to separatism, extremism and violence," said the Ministry of External Affairs in a statement. Trudeau as well as opposition leader Pierre Poilievre attended the Khalsa Day celebrations in Toronto on Sunday (Apr 28) where loud chants of pro-Khalistan slogans were raised. As the Canadian prime minister was set to address the public to mark Khalsa Day, the "Khalistan Zindabad" chants got louder, as seen in the video released by Canada-based CPAC TV.
