Dismissing rumours of switching allegiance to the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) said that it will continue to support the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

The speculations surfaced as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) witnessed unexpected Lok Sabha election results on Tuesday (Jun 4) where the saffron party did not receive a full majority.

"Our pre-poll pact with BJP and Janasena in Andhra Pradesh isn't just political arithmetic; it's a matter of credibility," TDP's senior leader Kanakamedala Ravindrakumar told news agency PTI.

"We will remain part of the NDA. There is absolutely no question of supporting the India Bloc," he said.

This comes after the TDP registered a landslide victory in both Assembly and Lok Sabha polls.

After the results came out, Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked the people of the country for their unwavering faith in India's Constitution stating that the BJP-led NDA will form its third successive government.

"The people of the country have expressed their trust in the NDA for the third consecutive time. This is an unprecedented moment in the history of India. I thank my family for their love and blessings. I assure the countrymen that to fulfil their aspirations, we will move forward with new energy, new enthusiasm, and new resolves," PM Modi earlier said on X.

"I express my heartfelt gratitude and congratulations to all the workers for the dedication and tireless hard work they have done," he added.

The vote counting began on June 4, and the Election Commission of India (ECI) declared results for all 543 parliamentary constituencies on&nbsp;Wednesday (Jun 5) morning.&nbsp;

While the Lok Sabha (lower house of the Indian parliament) has 543 seats, the counting was held for 542 as the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from Surat, Gujarat was elected unopposed.&nbsp;

The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is poised to form the next government as the ruling party and its allies garnered a total of 292 votes.&nbsp;

However, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP failed to cross the 272 majority mark and will need the support of allies to form the government. The ruling party had won 303 and 282 seats in the general elections in 2019 and 2014, respectively.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the main opposition INDIA bloc, led by the Indian National Congress (INC), put up a tough fight and won 234 seats.

INC managed to get 99 seats compared to 52 it won in 2019. It was also the highest number of seats that the grand old party bagged&nbsp;since 2014.&nbsp;

The Samajwadi Party (SP), a part of the INDIA bloc, won 37 seats, the third-highest overall after BJP and Congress.&nbsp;

The party, led by Akhilesh Yadav, also emerged as the single-largest party in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh which has 80 parliamentary constituencies, the highest in the country.&nbsp;

Goa has two Lok Sabha seats – North Goa and South Goa – and given the small number of seats, elections were held in a single phase in the state.

Over the years, the state has seen competition between the two prominent national parties – the BJP&nbsp;and the INC.&nbsp;

However, this time around, the state has also witnessed a rise in the popularity of regional parties like the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP), the Goa Forward Party (GFP), and the Revolutionary Goans Party (RPG).&nbsp;

Uttarakhand Lok Sabha Election Result 2024 Full Winners List

Maharashtra Lok Sabha Election Results 2024:&nbsp;In Maharashtra, the ruling&nbsp;three-party&nbsp;Mahayuti alliance including&nbsp;BJP managed to garner 17 seats, while the opposition alliance, Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) which includes Congress bagged 30 out of the 48&nbsp;seats across the west Indian state.&nbsp;

The voting for the world’s largest election concluded on Saturday (Jun 1) after voters cast their ballots in the last and seventh phases. The results were announced on Tuesday (Jun 4).&nbsp;

Voting in the west Indian state of Maharashtra was held in the first five phases of the election between April 19 and May 20.&nbsp;

Maharashtra has the second-highest number of seats in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Indian parliament. Out of the 543 seats for which the election was conducted this year, Maharashtra has 48, the second-highest after Uttar Pradesh which has 80.&nbsp;

The Indian state has seen a major shift in alliances and parties, particularly since 2014 when the current Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led NDA alliance came to power at the Centre following the general elections.&nbsp;

In 2022, Maharashtra witnessed a high-stakes political crisis when Shiv Sena – founded by the late Balasaheb Thackeray – member Eknath Shinde cross-voted for the BJP and later broke up the party.&nbsp;

Eventually, Shinde joined the ruling party and formed a BJP-Shiv Sena coalition government in Maharashtra.&nbsp;

Nearly all exit polls released on June 1 had showed the Opposition’s Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) comprising Congress, Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT), and Sharad Pawar-led NCP (Sharad Chandra Pawar) (NCP (SCP)) make substantial gains.&nbsp;

The state is currently led by the Mahayuti alliance comprising of BJP, Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar’s NCP.&nbsp;

Voting in the west Indian state of Maharashtra was held in the first five phases of the election between April 19 and May 20. Maharashtra has the second-highest number of seats in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Indian parliament. Out of the 543 seats for which the election was conducted this year, Maharashtra has 48, the second-highest after Uttar Pradesh which has 80. The Indian state has seen a major shift in alliances and parties, particularly since 2014 when the current Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led NDA alliance came to power at the Centre following the general elections. Punjab Lok Sabha elections 2024:&nbsp;Congress won seven seats, the Aam Admi Party won three, while Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) won one&nbsp;and independents won two out of the 13 Lok Sabha seats of the north Indian state of Punjab.

As part of the 18th Lok Sabha elections, Punjab went to polls on June 1 for 13 Lok Sabha seats in a single-phase voting. As per the Election Commission's data, the state's voter turnout up was 62.80 per cent. At present, the Aam Aadmi Party is in power in the state. During the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the state had recorded a voter turnout of 65.96 per cent.

Suresh Gopi, a Malayalam actor-turned-politician, has made history by becoming the first-ever Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Lok Sabha member from the south Indian state of Kerala. The BJP candidate maintained a comfortable lead of more than 70,000 votes against his rival V S Sunil Kumar from the Communist Party of India (CPI) and ultimately won by a margin of 74,686 votes.&nbsp;

<h2>Gopi's win in Thrissur comes after failures</h2>

Gopi’s win comes after multiple failures over the years since he first joined the BJP in 2016. He first sought to win Thrissur for BJP during the last general elections in 2019 but failed to do so. After two years, he also failed to win in the 2021 assembly elections. However, the saffron party chose him again this time around.&nbsp;

The voting in the south Indian state of Kerala took place in the second phase of the Lok Sabha Elections&nbsp;on April 26. It is also one of the few states where the Congress remains strong.&nbsp;

However, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has sought to change that this election and they may have done that with Gopi’s potential win.&nbsp;

However, the Congress candidate clawed his way back up in the polls, as the day progressed and won with a comfortable lead.

Two terrorists killed as encounter breaks out in Kashmir’s Pulwama district

An Akasa Air flight flying from Delhi to the Indian financial capital city of Mumbai, on Monday (Jun 3) morning was diverted to Gujarat’s Ahmedabad airport after it received a security alert, said a spokesperson for the airline. The flight was reportedly carrying 186 passengers, including an infant, and six crew members.&nbsp;

Akasa Air flight QP 1719 landed safely at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad at 10:13 am (local time) after it received a “security alert",&nbsp;said a spokesperson for the airline, as quoted by ANI.&nbsp;

“As per prescribed safety and security procedures, the plane was diverted to Ahmedabad,” said the airline. It added, “All passengers have been deplaned. Akasa Air is following and supporting all safety and security protocols on ground.”&nbsp;

The call about the bomb threat was received by the IndiGo call centre located at Thuraipakkam, Chennai prompting officials to move the flight to an ‘isolated bay’ for a security check.&nbsp;

The flight was allowed to depart by 10:30 am (local time) two hours after it was scheduled to takeoff, following the completion of security procedures, said the officials as per PTI.&nbsp;

The passenger, identified as 42-year-old Vimal Kumar from Meerut, was interrogated. He said that his wife made the call after watching the news about a bomb threat on an aircraft a few days earlier and that she is “mentally unfit",&nbsp;according to PTI.&nbsp;

The airline&nbsp;said that its flight 6E 2232 had received a bomb threat and was taken to an “isolation bay as per security agency guidelines and the crew followed all standard operating procedures,” after it landed in Delhi. All passengers had safely disembarked.&nbsp;

According to the IMD, temperatures in northwestern and central India are expected to fall in the coming days but the heatwave over the eastern part of the country will continue for at least two more days.&nbsp;

At least 18 polling staff deployed for the final phase have died of suspected heat-related conditions. According to reports, 10 election personnel in Bihar and eight in the Mirzapur district of Uttar Pradesh died and the reason for their deaths is being ascertained.&nbsp;

In a statement, the Mirzapur district administration said that three people from the polling party deployed were taken to the hospital after their health suddenly deteriorated and that they died while undergoing treatment.&nbsp;

We are currently treating at least 23 people brought in from election duty,” RB Kamal, principal of Mirzapur (Divisional) Medical College and Hospital where the personnel are being treated, told reporters.

Lok Sabha Elections Phase 7: Voters line up in final phase of elections amid heatwave

India's national capital Delhi sweltered amid intense heatwave conditions on Friday (May 31) and occupied the top three hottest places in the country.

Mungeshpur emerged as the hottest place in the country after recording 49.6 degrees Celsius which was followed by Narela where temperature soared to 49.4 degrees Celsius and west Delhi's Najafgarh which recorded 49.2 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, Sirsa district of Haryana emerged as the fourth hottest place in the country at 48.8 degrees Celsius. After this, Delhi's Jafarpur and Pusa emerged as the fifth hottest, recording 48.3 degrees Celsius.

New Delhi's base station Safdarjung recorded a maximum temperature of 45.8 degrees Celsius, which was six notches above normal, in comparison to 45.6 degrees Celsius recorded a day earlier.&nbsp;

The minimum temperature remained at 29 degrees Celsius which was two notches below normal. A day earlier, the minimum temperature was 30.4 degrees Celsius.&nbsp;

The humidity remained between 13 per cent and 59 per cent while the heat index or 'feel-like' temperature remained at 44 degrees Celsius, which was the same as the previous day.

The national capital has been battling scorching and severe heatwaves for seven straight days now. Friday marked the heatwave's sixth consecutive day as the city base station in Safdarjung matched a May 2013 record.&nbsp;

The year's highest and its second highest temperature were recorded by the station on Wednesday (May 29) at 46.8 degrees Celsius.

<h2>Sensor goof up in Mungeshpur temperature, says IMD</h2>

The automatic weather station at Mungeshpur earlier this week recorded 52.9 degrees Celsius which the IMD later confirmed was a sensor's error. The same area had earlier recorded 49.9 degrees Celsius.&nbsp;

According to the weather department, an incumbent western disturbance is likely to change weather from late Friday night (May 31) or Saturday (June 1). This has increased the possibility of some quick respite in temperature after a thunderstorm or very light rain.

The department had also issued a yellow alert for heatwaves in some isolated areas.

"There are chances of a drop in the daytime temperatures. However, some areas will still suffer heatwaves. Chances are the humidity will rise, which might increase the discomfort level during the daytime," an official at IMD stated.&nbsp;

The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to range between around 44 degrees Celsius and 30 degrees Celsius at Safdarjung on Saturday (June 1).

India: Drugs worth more than $119,849 found hidden in children’s toys, candies

At least one person was killed and eight others were injured on Friday (May 31) after being hit by large stones tumbling down the hill slopes on the Gangotri National Highway in the Indian state of Uttarakhand, the officials said.

The sudden cascade of rocks and boulders descended near National Highway 108 (NH 108) near Dabrani, Gangotri, catching commuters by surprise. Many vehicles found themselves trapped under the weight of the debris on the Char Dham Yatra route.

As per officials, six of the injured were taken to the Primary Health Centre, Harshil, while the two others injured were admitted to District Hospital, Uttarkashi. The deceased has not yet been identified, the officials said.

Taking to X, Uttarakhand Police posted that after receiving information about the incident, state police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams reached the spot, and a rescue operation was underway.&nbsp;

Vehicles have been stopped for security reasons and will be released after the route is completely safe, the police said.&nbsp;

The chief minister&nbsp;wrote,&nbsp;“Relief and rescue work is being done at a fast pace at the spot and the injured have been sent to the nearest health centre after giving them first aid. The concerned officials have been directed to provide proper treatment to the injured and to speed up relief and rescue operations.”

Earlier on May 27, ANI reported that the Uttarakhand Government had implemented comprehensive measures, including traffic and transport enhancements and managing frequent landslides in the region to ensure a safer and more convenient Char Dham Yatra.

The top priority was disaster management of frequent landslides in the region. JCB machines and other heavy equipment were put on standby 24/7, and a dedicated team was placed to monitor high-risk areas to respond rapidly and minimise disruptions.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami visited Rishikesh and conducted a thorough site inspection of the Chardham arrangements.

It operates across various sectors, including government, industry, academia, and civil society, to foster a deeper understanding of the opportunities arising from the Australia-India relationship. The Centre was officially inaugurated in Sydney in 2024, underscoring Australia's dedication to bolstering its ties with India.

The call for an early conclusion of the trade pact comes in the wake of the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA), which took effect in December 2022. WION: What is this centre all about? How does it further the relationship between the two countries?

Tim Thomas: The centre is a very bold and exciting addition to the architecture of the Australia, India relationship. Its fundamental reason for being is to support the transformation of the economic relationship between Australia and India, built on mutual understanding and deep&nbsp;People-to-People ties. It is a unique investment amongst India's economic partners, for the Australian Government to uplift the relationship between Australia and India.&nbsp;

WION: So, its primary focus is investment and, of course, the people-to-people relationship?

Tim Thomas: I would say so, I would describe the economic relationship as well as the bilateral trade to investment. I would say there's great opportunities for more joint ventures and innovative collaboration between Australian and Indian companies. And I would say at the top of the pyramid is knowledge partnerships, that is what we would like to see because that will underpin the long-term nature of relations.

WION: How do you see the relationship between the two countries, we have seen high-level engagements between the leadership of the two countries and we have seen strong people to be to connect as well. So how would you characterise this relationship?

Tim Thomas: I would say it is very strong at the government-to-government level, I think we've had incredible levels of ministerial engagement across all of our key portfolios. Of course, our Prime Ministers enjoy a fantastic relationship. We have a very, I would say, intimate strategic relationship, including foreign ministers and defence ministers get together on a regular basis. But I would say that is going very well. I would say the Indian diaspora and Australia play a key part of the people-to-people relationship, this great trusted familiarity in the relationship. What I would like to see more of is that relationships are transferred into more industry outcomes and more growth in economic relationships.&nbsp;

WION: What kinds of practical outcomes your centre is looking at in terms of furthering India's relationship?

Tim Thomas: So, if I break them into about four areas, if I may, the economic relationship. So bilateral trade today is growing at the back of the interim free trade agreement, but it should be much higher. So, we would like to see more growth in bilateral trade, but also a more diversified trade. I think it's still very concentrated on certain goods and services. I would say the other areas, of course, on the public understanding, what is the community's understanding of India to Australia and the Australian community's understanding of what's happening in India. So that's a second area where I think there's great opportunity for improvement. I think we can harness more of the networks and the expertise of our Indian diaspora, particularly what I call the successful leading lights of the diaspora. We want to see greater growth in the relationship. And fourth is a fantastic opportunity to expand our connections culturally with our creative industries and sports.

WION: Essentially, in the relationship, what do you foresee, in like the next one year and expectation from the new government

Tim Thomas: I think there has to be greater investment from key sectors and when I say key sectors, in fact, the Australian Government is doing an updated economic engagement effort through what is known as the future roadmap of economic engagement between Australia - India, that will prioritise some key sectors in tourism, in premium foods and wine, but I would say also in critical minerals, in energy transition, in renewables, advanced manufacturing and agriculture. So, I would like to see more two-way investments in the next year. I would say that has to start with building relationships, and building familiarity with each other's markets in those areas.&nbsp;

I would say the other area is, of course, we would love to see a comprehensive economic cooperation agreement concluded in the next, within the next 12 months. If that is possible, because we think that will facilitate greater investment led economic engagement and expand our relationship in critical minerals and in education.&nbsp;

Of course, our Prime Ministers enjoy a fantastic relationship. We have a very, I would say, intimate strategic relationship, including foreign ministers and defence ministers get together on a regular basis. But I would say that is going very well. I would say the Indian diaspora and Australia play a key part of the people-to-people relationship, this great trusted familiarity in the relationship. What I would like to see more of is that relationships are transferred into more industry outcomes and more growth in economic relationships. WION: What kinds of practical outcomes your centre is looking at in terms of furthering India's relationship? Tim Thomas: So, if I break them into about four areas, if I may, the economic relationship. So bilateral trade today is growing at the back of the interim free trade agreement, but it should be much higher. So, we would like to see more growth in bilateral trade, but also a more diversified trade. I think it's still very concentrated on certain goods and services. I would say the other areas, of course, on the public understanding, what is the community's understanding of India to Australia and the Australian community's understanding of what's happening in India. So that's a second area where I think there's great opportunity for improvement. I think we can harness more of the networks and the expertise of our Indian diaspora, particularly what I call the successful leading lights of the diaspora. We want to see greater growth in the relationship. And fourth is a fantastic opportunity to expand our connections culturally with our creative industries and sports. WION: Essentially, in the relationship, what do you foresee, in like the next one year and expectation from the new government Tim Thomas: I think there has to be greater investment from key sectors and when I say key sectors, in fact, the Australian Government is doing an updated economic engagement effort through what is known as the future roadmap of economic engagement between Australia - India, that will prioritise some key sectors in tourism, in premium foods and wine, but I would say also in critical minerals, in energy transition, in renewables, advanced manufacturing and agriculture. So, I would like to see more two-way investments in the next year. I would say that has to start with building relationships, and building familiarity with each other's markets in those areas. I would say the other area is, of course, we would love to see a comprehensive economic cooperation agreement concluded in the next, within the next 12 months. If that is possible, because we think that will facilitate greater investment led economic engagement and expand our relationship in critical minerals and in education.

Another tourist said that they had not heard Kashmir is a hot place. “The weather is hot because I don't live in India. It's quite hot for me, the heatwave but the place is pretty. I have not heard Kashmir being hot, I have always been told it's the Mini Switzerland but still the weather is quite hot and a drastic change. I was aware the weather is going to be very hot as compared to where I am coming from,” said Afneen, a tourist.

The MeT has said that there is no hope of any respite from the heat in the coming days. The weather is not only high in Srinagar city but also at tourist places on higher reaches like Pahalgam, Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Kokernag and Verinag. And the tourists who are visiting the Kashmir Valley are saying that they do not feel like visiting a hill station. Many tourists had come with winter clothes and jackets thinking they would require these clothes.&nbsp;

“It's very hot here and making it very difficult for us to travel around in the city. What to do? We have made plans already and we like the gardens and people are nice but due to the hot weather, it's becoming difficult. We are not enjoying it as much as we wanted to. We did not expect it to be so hot at all,'' said Archana Rastogi, a tourist.&nbsp;

Some tourists were disappointed and said they had read that the weather would be better next week but their holidays would be over by then. “Srinagar is pretty hot today, they are saying the weather will change in the next two days but by then we would have left. I have come here from Delhi, the last time I was here was in 1984. It was cold in Gulmarg, but the city side is very hot and it's enjoyable,” said Yogesh, a tourist.&nbsp;

The Valley has been witnessing erratic weather conditions. With heavy snowfall and severe cold wave conditions seen in the middle of April and May, the valley is now facing a heat wave.&nbsp;

“It's definitely a little cooler than my city but I did not expect it to be so hot. I expected it to be cooler. My woollens have only been used for my children and apart from that we have not used any,” said Gautam, a tourist.&nbsp;

Under the Heat Wave Action Plan, the Jammu and Kashmir government has designated departments and nodal officers to help or assist affected individuals. The administration has urged residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect their health during this period of hot weather.

The (IMD) had earlier reported “severe heat-wave conditions,” in the Indian capital after which it recorded an all-time high temperature in the Delhi suburb of Mungeshpur at around 2:30 pm (local time).&nbsp;

However,&nbsp;late Wednesday, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju took to X and said that the reading is "not official yet," adding that the record-breaking temperature in Delhi is "very unlikely."

"Our senior officials in IMD have been asked to verify the news report. The official position will be stated soon," said the Union Minister.&nbsp;

"The maximum temperature over Delhi NCR varied from 45.2° to 49.1°C in different parts of city, Mungeshpur reported 52.9°C as an outlier compared to other stations," said the IMD in a statement.&nbsp;

It added, "It could be due to error in the sensor or the local factor. IMD is examining the data and sensors."

If confirmed, the temperature in Delhi on Wednesday afternoon shattered the previously recorded set on May 19, 2016, when the Indian city of Phalodi, Rajasthan reached a sweltering 51 degrees Celsius.

Speaking about the record-breaking temperature, IMD regional head Kuldeep Srivastava said the city’s outskirts are the first areas to be hit by hot winds from Rajasthan.&nbsp;

“Parts of Delhi are particularly susceptible to the early arrival of these hot winds, worsening the already severe weather. Areas like Mungeshpur, Narela and Najafgarh are the first to experience the full force of these hot winds,” he told news agency PTI.

The temperature was more than nine degrees higher than expected, on the second day of record-breaking heat in the Indian capital.&nbsp;

The IMD has issued a red alert health notice for the city, with an estimated population of around 35 million people, warning of a “very high likelihood of developing heat illness and heat stroke in all ages,” with “extreme care needed for vulnerable people”.&nbsp;

Kuzhimanthi is a version of a Yemeni dish featuring flavoured rice and meat, sold in most of the non-vegetarian restaurants in Kerala.

The restaurant was closed after 178 people were diagnosed with food poisoning after eating the biryani-like dish at the eatery reportedly on Saturday (May 25) evening.&nbsp;

The reptiles, according to news agency ANI, were found crawling under the toilet of a newly constructed house in Kuwarital Chariali near the Kaliabor area.&nbsp;

“The house owner informed me about the presence of snakes and I reached the spot. I found that many snakes were crawling at the place,” said the snake rescuer, as quoted by ANI.&nbsp;

He added, “I recovered around 35 snakes crawling from a newly constructed toilet of the house. Later, I released the snakes&nbsp;in the Joisagar Dalani area.”

According to a report by India Today NE, Deka said there was little cause for alarm after he identified the hatchlings. He noted that the snake had laid eggs in the bathroom which had hatched.&nbsp;

He then reportedly coordinated with the local forest department and managed to release the snake into its natural habitat.

The incident took place around 1:00 am (local time) on Monday when the alleged shooter and four others barged into Xtreme sports bar in the state capital Ranchi after it had closed, asking the staff members to serve them alcohol, said the police.&nbsp;

The deadly shooting was caught on CCTV where the alleged perpetrator can be seen with a rifle in his hand wearing shorts and had his face with his t-shirt.&nbsp;

“On being refused, a heated argument ensued between them and the bar staff. During the argument, one of them brought in a rifle and shot at the DJ in his chest from point-blank range,” Chandan Sinha, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Ranchi, speaking about the incident.&nbsp;

Ranchi Deputy Superintendent of Police and the local police station in charge had visited the scene of the crime on Monday morning to examine the CCTV footage and identify the shooter and his accomplices.&nbsp;

We immediately informed police and one person was arrested by police. “Later I got a call that one of our staff had been shot… We hope that the accused will be arrested soon…,” said the bar operator.&nbsp;

DSP Pramod Mishra said that the suspected shooter has been identified. “He has a previous criminal record and has been to jail earlier as well. We are investigating the matter. He is a suspicious person. The deceased is a resident of Chapra (West Bengal).”

Ranchi Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Chandan Kumar Sinha told news agency PTI that the accused was arrested from the Indian city of Gaya in Bihar.&nbsp;

“He will be brought to Ranchi and a detailed interrogation will be conducted to ascertain the exact cause of the firing,” Sinha added.&nbsp;

Brajesh Prajapati, the accused, would pose as a woman college professor and trick girls into believing that he would help them get a scholarship.

He then invited them over to meet, posing as a female teacher over a phone call, and said that "her son" would take them to "her" house.

After committing the heinous crime, he would snatch the victim's phone.

As per news agency PTI reports, one of the victims who filed a complaint against Prajapati, said that he picked her up on a motorcycle wearing a helmet and hand gloves, took her to a deserted place and allegedly raped her.

During the investigation into the matter, the police learnt that most of the survivors belonged to tribal communities.

Prajapati confessed to raping seven girls, however, four more came forward to lodge complaints against him.

Three of his associates have also been arrested, said Rewa Range Inspector General (IG) Mahendra Singh Sikarwar.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav ordered a probe by a special investigation team (SIT) into the case, after which a nine-member SIT headed by Sub Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) of Kusmi, Roshni Singh Thakur was constituted which will submit its report in the coming days.

"Those who commit such condemnable acts are enemies of society, strictest action will be taken against the accused. They will not be spared at any cost," the chief minister wrote on X.

Congress leader Kamal Nath demanded a high-level inquiry into the matter.

"Can't girls from the tribal community in Madhya Pradesh even study in college without fear?....what is the meaning of the slogan - Beti Padhao, Beti Bachao?" the former chief minister asked on X, noting that Madhya Pradesh led in the country in terms of crimes against tribals and women.

"Not a day goes by when news of atrocities on tribals does not come to light in Madhya Pradesh," he said while seeking financial assistance for the survivors in the Sidhi case.

Kaamya Karthikeyan, a 16-year-old mountaineer, achieved a remarkable feat by becoming the youngest ever Indian and the second youngest girl in the world to scale Mt Everest.

In the case of the alleged plot to kill Khalistani&nbsp;terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, the top court in Czech Republic has rejected a petition by Indian national Nikhil Gupta against his extradition to the US.&nbsp;Now the nation's justice minister will have to take a call on the actual extradition.

Gupta, who at present is locked up in a Prague prison, is indicted by the US for plotting to kill Pannun.&nbsp;

"The Constitutional Court did not find any circumstance for which declaring extradition admissible would lead to a violation of any of the constitutionally guaranteed fundamental rights and freedoms," the court said on Wednesday (May 22).

It ruled that lower courts had adequately taken into account the factors that may prevent extradition.&nbsp;

It also repudiated arguments claiming the case was political.

"For the complainant, this brings the proceedings before the Czech courts to an end."

The top Czech court, upholding the Municipal Court and The High Court's order, stated that it has approved the decision of the general courts concerning the admissibility of extradition.

The court also kept the local court's ruling to reject Gupta’s appeal requesting release from pre-trial detention.

It declined to accept compensation for detention in the form of a monetary guarantee or ban on travel abroad.

Gupta had claimed that the courts did not review all the important events that could turn into an obstruction to extradition, as per the statement.

This comes after the US reiterated its stance on seeking accountability from the Indian government about the ongoing investigation into the murder plot of Pannun.&nbsp;

Addressing a briefing at the White House on April 30, State Department's Principal Deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel said that there is an ongoing dialogue and that the US expects accountability from the Indian authorities.

"So we continue to expect accountability from the Government of India based on the results of the Indian inquiry committee's work, and we are regularly working with them and inquiring for additional updates," Patel said on being asked about a report by The Washington Post which named an Indian Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) official as being involved in the alleged plot.

"We'll also continue to raise our concerns directly with the Indian government at senior levels...," Patel added.&nbsp;

The claims made in the Washington Post report were dismissed by New Delhi. Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said last week that the report was "speculative and irresponsible".

"The report in question makes unwarranted and unsubstantiated imputations on a serious matter. There is an ongoing investigation of the High-Level Committee set up by the Government of India to look into the security concerns shared by the US government on networks of organised criminals, terrorists and others," Jaiswal said.

"Speculative and irresponsible comments on it are not helpful," he added.&nbsp;

The world is riding on an Electric Vehicle bandwagon. However, India seems to be lagging in Electric Vehicle adoption, with a penetration rate of less than 1 per cent.

A recent working paper by the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India (EAC-PM) highlights the reasons for India's lacklustre performance.

The working paper, authored by EAC members Bibek Debroy and Devi Prasad Misra, reveals that high costs, 'range anxiety', limited model options, and unknown resale value are acting as barriers to large-scale EV adoption.

The rate of EV adoption is even slower in the LMV (Light Motor Vehicles) segment, which continues to impact the growth of this nascent EV sector. LMVs were about 19 per cent of the total vehicle sales in 2022-23, but only 0.95 per cent of them were EVs.

The paper, while noting the cost of buying an EV may be higher to begin with, argues that the cost of running an EV will be lower compared to fuel-consuming vehicles in the long run, thanks to the cost difference between electricity and fuels.

"For small cars, the cost of ownership is in &nbsp;favour of electric vehicles from the fifth year onwards whereas for mid-size vehicles the equation turns favourable for electric vehicles from the 9th year onwards," the authors write in the working paper titled&nbsp;'Igniting the Bright Spark: Through the Looking Glass on Electric Mobility in India'.

The fear that a battery-run EV will run out of power before reaching its destination is real. While the term 'range anxiety' originated in the U.S, it has found resonance in India, where the EV charging spots are still under development.

The report notes that there were 6586 publically accessible EV Charging Stations in India, as of March 2023. But a recent CII report shows that India would need&nbsp;over 1.3 million charging stations in order to facilitate EV adoption.

While the lack of diversity in models remain a challenge, the paper highlights China's decade-long experience in EVs and encourages greater government role in the sector to boost adoption.

Once the adoption figures rise, Debroy and Misra argue, market forces can enter the nascent market and diversify the product offerings.

"It is estimated that between 2009 and 2022, the Chinese government poured over US$29 billion into subsidies and tax breaks for Chinese EV manufacturers," they say, adding that early adoption of EVs has come from state mandates or state subsidies.

But a thorough reading of the paper suggests that the biggest benefit of adopting EVs would be economic.

The rate of EV adoption is even slower in the LMV (Light Motor Vehicles) segment, which continues to impact the growth of this nascent EV sector. LMVs were about 19 per cent of the total vehicle sales in 2022-23, but only 0.95 per cent of them were EVs. The paper, while noting the cost of buying an EV may be higher to begin with, argues that the cost of running an EV will be lower compared to fuel-consuming vehicles in the long run, thanks to the cost difference between electricity and fuels. "For small cars, the cost of ownership is in favour of electric vehicles from the fifth year onwards whereas for mid-size vehicles the equation turns favourable for electric vehicles from the 9th year onwards," the authors write in the working paper titled 'Igniting the Bright Spark: Through the Looking Glass on Electric Mobility in India'. Once the adoption figures rise, Debroy and Misra argue, market forces can enter the nascent market and diversify the product offerings. "It is estimated that between 2009 and 2022, the Chinese government poured over US$29 billion into subsidies and tax breaks for Chinese EV manufacturers," they say, adding that early adoption of EVs has come from state mandates or state subsidies.
