During India's opening World Cup game against South Africa in Southampton, Dhoni's green keeping gloves had a dagger logo embossed, which looked like an Army insignia.&nbsp;

It was well appreciated by the Indian fans but the International Cricket Council(ICC) requested the BCCI to have the badge removed, saying it is against its regulations.&nbsp;

Twitter exploded with tweets in support of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/icc-row-we-stand-by-dhoni-over-army-glove-insignia-issue-say-bcci-sources-225165">Dhoni </a>sporting the gloves, with politicians, Bollywood celebrities and fans tweeting.

'#DhoniKeepTheGlove' has been the top trend on Twitter since the Indian cricket board (BCCI) said it stands firmly with Dhoni against ICC’s direction to remove the Army crest.

Claire Furlong, ICC General Manager - Strategic Communications had objected to Dhoni insignia, saying on Thursday: "It is against the regulations and we have requested it is removed."

Furlong had added that it was a "request" for removal and not a "breach".

Committee of Administrators (CoA) chief Vinod Rai confirmed that BCCI has written a letter to the International Cricket Council seeking permission for Dhoni to wear the gloves with the army badge.

"The BCCI had already sent a formal request to the ICC for clearance. As per ICC regulations, players can't sport any commercial, religious or military logo. There was nothing commercial or religious in this regard as we all know," Rai told news agency PTI.

"And it is not the paramilitary regimental dagger that is embossed in his gloves. So Dhoni is not in breach of ICC regulations," he added.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni will continue wearing the dagger insignia on his wicket-keeping gloves as it is not a military symbol, Rai said.

#DhoniKeepTheGlove: Twitter welcomes Indian cricket board's stand on Dhoni glove row

South Africa are refusing to admit that their World Cup race is all but over with all-rounder Chris Morris telling fans to stick with the team despite the third loss inside a week.

They were beaten by six wickets by India at the Rose Bowl on Wednesday – leaving the side with a massive task if they are to get through to the semi-finals.

South Africa were beaten in the tournament opener by England on Thursday and were then upset by Bangladesh on Sunday.

The defeat by <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/batsmen-clueless-against-bumrah-never-seen-amla-get-out-like-that-in-odis-kohli-224806">India </a>means they would really need to win all of their remaining six round-robin matches to stand any chance of progressing to the last four.

“Stranger things have happened at the World Cup before,” said Morris after top scoring for South Africa with 42 as they struggled to 227-9.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/india-beat-south-africa-by-six-wickets-in-cricket-world-cup-224756">India </a>reached the target with two and a half overs to spare.

“Obviously we are disappointed to lose three games so far but we ask the fans at home to stay with us and back us as much as you can and we will try and perform for you,” he told a news conference.

Morris said it had been a much better performance by the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/watch-quinton-de-kocks-stunning-catch-that-dismissed-indias-virat-kohli-in-world-cup-224765">South Africans</a> after their opening two losses.

“Our body language was not there in the first two games but today we addressed that. Overall I thought we were quite good," he said.

“A few opportunities came our way but then didn’t go our way. At the end of the day, if a good Indian team took so much time to get to the 227 target, it shows we bowled well. Maybe with a bit of luck, things could have gone our way.

“The guys know what is needed to be done. We are a bit disappointed and angry. But when the sun comes up tomorrow, we take on our next opponents. It is as simple as that,” Morris added.

South Africa now have a four-day break before facing West Indies in Southampton on Monday.

Major takeaways from first week of the Cricket World Cup 2019

India spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, who bowled an impeccable spell during India's opening match in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup on Wednesday, revealed that the wicket of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/batsmen-clueless-against-bumrah-never-seen-amla-get-out-like-that-in-odis-kohli-224806">South Africa</a> skipper Faf du Plessis was his favourite.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-kohli-says-picking-two-spinners-was-masterstroke-in-win-against-south-africa-224854">Chahal </a>took four wickets and was having a candid conversation with Kuldeep Yadav post the match where the latter asked him about his favourite wicket.

"Faf's wicket was the best as he was playing with small forward-steps and I was drifting the ball really well. The previous two balls, I had bowled him leg spin. So on that ball, I chose to bowl on an angle so the ball drifts and hit the off stump. He couldn't pick it, he thought it was a leg spin, and that's why the ball hit the inside of his bat and hit the stumps," Chahal said in a video posted by Bcci.tv.

Rohit Sharma also displayed a brilliant performance with the bat as he hammered a century to help his side chase down a modest target of 228.

Sharma played an unbeaten knock of 122 runs off 144 balls and Chahal eulogised Sharma for his <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/india-beat-south-africa-by-six-wickets-in-cricket-world-cup-224756">match-winning</a> knock.

"The way Rohit Sharma played his inning, especially on this wicket; he showed the temperament that how a batsman should bat. In the beginning, it was not easy but he finished the match which is a plus point," he said.

Ahead of India opening match in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup, India batsman Yusuf Pathan has expressed his confidence in the team, saying that team's performance in the last many years has been really good and players are in good form.

"I wish 'Eid Mubarak'&nbsp;to everyone. Indian team's preparation has been very good and they have been playing very good cricket in the last many years and also all the players were in good form during the IPL. It is a big tournament. Inshallah, they will do good," Pathan told ANI on Wednesday.

However, South Africa are on a dismal run as they have lost both the matches.

During the opening match of the World Cup, South Africa faced a massive 104-run defeat at the hands of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-chris-woakes-backs-england-to-bounce-back-from-pakistan-defeat-224431">England</a>, followed by a 21-run defeat against Bangladesh.

Therefore, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/south-africa-can-still-reach-world-cup-semis-without-steyn-says-faf-du-plessis-224351">South Africa</a> will be aiming to make a strong comeback in the tournament, but nothing is going well for the Proteas.

Hashim Amla and Lungi Ngidi missed their previous clash against Bangladesh as the former faced a blow to head during their match against England while the latter suffered a hamstring injury.

Moreover, Dale Steyn has also been ruled out of the World Cup owing to shoulder injury.

India, who are one of the favourites in the tournament, have a strong squad under the leadership of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/people-expect-century-but-my-focus-is-on-victory-says-virat-kohli-ahead-of-south-africa-clash-224280">Virat Kohli </a>and the team also feature 2011 World Cup-winning captain MS Dhoni.

It will, therefore, be interesting to see whether South Africa manage to revive themselves or India justify their favourite tag.

On Wednesday, he offered Eid prayers at historic Jama Masjid in New Delhi.

Mahmood was Pakistan's High Commissioner to India before he assumed charge of the top post in mid-April.

It is not immediately known whether he would meet any Indian officials or leaders during his stay here. Mahmood's children were studying here.

Before returning to Pakistan on April 14, Mahmood had told PTI that dialogue between India and Pakistan was the only option to understand mutual concerns and ensure peace, prosperity and security in the region.

He said Pakistan was hoping for "re-engagement" with India after the Lok Sabha polls.

"Sustained engagement and structured dialogue would enable the two countries to understand mutual concerns and differences, resolve outstanding disputes and build the edifice of durable peace, security and prosperity in the region," he said.

India has slammed the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) for its references on Kashmir in its final Communiqué at its summit in Mecca, Saudi Arabia on May 31.

Rejecting the OIC Communiqué, the Ministry of External Affairs in a statement said, "The OIC has no locus standi in matters relating to the state of Jammu and Kashmir, which is an integral part of India. It is reiterated that OIC should refrain from making such unwarranted references”.

The OIC in its Communiqué mentioned Kashmir six times and said, it "reaffirmed its principled support for the people of Jammu and Kashmir for the realization of their legitimate right to self-determination".

It is not for the first time when the OIC has made references on Kashmir. India has slammed the group, which comprises 57 Muslim countries, every time.

Since the early 1990s, communiqués and resolutions have been issued at the OIC summits and ministerial meetings which have included one-sided criticism of India. Pakistan has been behind such anti-India references in the OIC communiqués/resolutions.

Former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj was invited for the 46th OIC foreign ministers meet at Abu Dhabi on March 1. She was in attendance as the Guest of Honour. The invite was extended by foreign minister of the United Arab Emirates Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Many countries such as Bangladesh, <a href="http://wionews.com/india-news/organisation-of-islamic-cooperation-welcomes-indias-participation-as-guest-of-honour-hoping-to-embrace-it-soon-200791">the UAE</a> and Syria have supported India's inclusion at the OIC but <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/india-attends-organisation-of-islamic-cooperation-meet-as-guest-of-honour-pakistan-threatens-to-boycott-due-to-delhis-presence-200426">Pakistan has been creating resistance</a>.&nbsp;

Speaking at a press conference at the end of Abu Dhabi foreign ministers meet, where India was invited on March 1, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan said, "OIC has sent a very clear and a positive sign to India, to the people of India, that the OIC appreciates the relationship with India".

Adding, that the organisation, "looks forward to strengthening such a relationship with India to the point where we can embrace India one day in the OIC".

Pakistan boycotted the plenary session at the OIC foreign minister's meet due to India's presence. Pakistan's foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi had written to OIC secretary-general Dr Yousef bin Ahmad Al Othaimeen asking the UAE to rescind the invite to India. The plea did not receive any response.

Earlier this year, Syrian envoy to India Dr Riad Abbas, told WION, "India has full right to be a permanent member of the OIC and we would like to be a full member of the OIC."

In 1969, the Indian delegation led by Congress leader Fakrudin Ali Ahmed, who later became the President of India, was not allowed to attend the final session of the OIC in Rabat, Morocco at the behest of Pakistan's then-president, Yahya Khan.

In a blow to India, US President Donald Trump on Friday said that the United States would end its <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/suspension-of-preferential-trade-status-for-india-under-gsp-is-done-deal-us-222997">preferential trade treatment </a>for India on June 5, reported news agency Reuters.

Trump had announced his intention to remove India from the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) program in early March.

"I have determined that India has not assured the United States that India will provide <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/india-is-not-a-tariff-king-has-the-right-to-protect-specific-sectors-under-wto-experts-212214">equitable and reasonable</a> access to its markets," Reuters report said Trump as saying in a statement on Friday.

India is the biggest beneficiary of the GSP, which allows preferential duty-free imports of up to $5.6 billion from the South Asian nation, the report added.

Indian officials have raised the prospect of higher import duties on more than 20 US goods if Trump drops India from the programme.

Twenty-four members of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/us-lawmakers-urge-trump-administration-to-not-end-indias-trade-privileges-215783">US Congress</a> sent the administration a letter on May 3 urging it not to terminate India's access to the GSP.

US President Trump to end trade privileges for India on June 5

India has reacted to the US withdrawing <a href="https://www.wionews.com/business-economy/i-intend-to-end-indias-preferential-trade-treatment-under-gsp-program-trump-201179">Generalised System of Preference</a> (GSP) which is a trade preference programme for developing countries saying its "unfortunate" that Washington did not accept New Delhi's offer for the resolution and it can't offer something that hurts national interest.&nbsp;

The United States would end its preferential <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/suspension-of-preferential-trade-status-for-india-under-gsp-is-done-deal-us-222997">trade treatment for India on June 5</a>.

A release by commerce ministry said, &nbsp;"India as part of our bilateral trade discussions, had offered resolution on significant US requests in an effort to find a mutually acceptable way forward. It is unfortunate that this did not find acceptance by the US."

India had offered a package to US, both before and after White House announced its decision on discontining of GSP status. &nbsp;

Trump administration withdrew the GSP for India, which allows duty-free entry for products from designated developing countries since, according to white house proclamation, "India has not assured the US that it will provide equitable and reasonable access to its markets."

On 4th March, White House had announced that it plans to terminate India's status under the GSP and had given a 60-day notice period till 3rd of May. India was the largest beneficiary of GSP in 2017 and was able to export $5.7 billion Indian goods to US duty-free. India’s exports to the US during 2018 were $ 51.4 billion

According to export body FIEO (Federation of Indian Export Organisations), the impact of the withdrawal will be minimum but some products may face the heat.

President of FIEO, Ganesh Kumar Gupta said, "Out of $ 6.35 billion value of exports from India to the US under the GSP scheme, net benefit to the tune of only $ 260 million were accrued by the Indian exporters and thus at macro level the impact of GSP withdrawal on our exports to US would be minimal."

India has reacted to the US withdrawing Generalised System of Preference (GSP) which is a trade preference programme for developing countries saying its "unfortunate" that Washington did not accept New Delhi's offer for the resolution and it can't offer something that hurts national interest. The United States would end its preferential trade treatment for India on June 5. A release by commerce ministry said, "India as part of our bilateral trade discussions, had offered resolution on significant US requests in an effort to find a mutually acceptable way forward. It is unfortunate that this did not find acceptance by the US." India had offered a package to US, both before and after White House announced its decision on discontining of GSP status. Trump administration withdrew the GSP for India, which allows duty-free entry for products from designated developing countries since, according to white house proclamation, "India has not assured the US that it will provide equitable and reasonable access to its markets." New Delhi, reacting on this said, "India...shall always uphold its national interest in these matters." Adding, it has "significant development imperatives and concerns and our people also aspire for better standards of living. This will remain the guiding factor in the government’s approach." India's decision to buy the long-range <a href="https://www.wionews.com/opinions/india-must-sign-s-400-deal-russia-167776">S-400 missile defence system</a> from Russia will have serious implications on defence ties, the Trump administration has warned.

The S-400 is known as Russia's most advanced long-range surface-to-air missile defence system. China was the first foreign buyer to seal a government-to-government deal with Russia in 2014 to procure the lethal missile system.

India and Russia signed a USD 5 billion S-400 air defence system deal in October last after wide-ranging talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

A Senior State Department Official told a group of reporters on Thursday that New Delhi's decision to buy S-400 air defence system from Moscow was significant, disagreeing with the view that it "isn't a big deal".

The official disagreed with the view that India's buying of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/heard-and-understood-by-us-on-s-400-missile-deal-defence-minister-nirmala-sitharaman-210014">S-400 from Russia</a> might not have an impact as long as it increases its military purchase from the US.

"I disagree. The S-400 is significant because of CAATSA sanctions. It's also significant because of what it precludes, in terms of future high-tech cooperation," the official said.

The S-400 missile defence system deal could result in US sanctions under the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) instituted by the US Congress on arms purchases from Russia.

The official said if India went ahead with its decision to buy the S-400 missile defence system from Russia, it will have serious implications on the defence ties.

The Trump administration has been very clear that the acquisition of advanced Russian technology sends the wrong message to Russia at a time when it continues its aggressions, the official said.

"Those concerns we hold high," said the official who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

"You can look at the very serious conversation that's taking place with our NATO partner Turkey and the same concerns will apply should India proceed with an S-400 purchase," the official said.

"We don't commingle highest technology systems. There are threats posed by the purchase of an S-400. So that conversation you're seeing played out in Turkey right now," the official said, asserting that those same concerns would apply to India as well.

Noting that there is no automatic waivers under CAATSA legislation, the official said that there is a provision that allows for presidential determination.

"Every case would have to be looked at individually. But I think the broader issue is where are India's military relations headed with whom is it going to share the highest technology and that operating environment because certain choices preclude other choices," the official noted.

"As we have discussions about a combat aircraft sales and other advanced systems, the decisions that India makes with regard to S-400 will have an impact on those conversations," the senior State Department official said.

India has been diversifying its weapons supply over the years. The US estimates that probably 60 to 70 per cent of its hardware is of Soviet/Russia origin.

There is still a significant dependence on Russia. But the jump in India's purchase of military equipment from the US from zero to USD 18 billion is significant, the official said.

"We do more military exercises with India than with any other country in the world. Through these exercises, through the enhanced cooperation we have, whether it's in the disaster assistance and humanitarian relief area or whether it's on this joint sailing that we did in the south China Sea, there's natural interest and also increasing the interoperability of our military equipment.

"So we, we certainly look forward to ongoing discussions about a variety of ones," the official said.

Asked that India took the decision to buy S-400 from Russia as the US was not willing to share such hardware with it, the official said: "There's another message from the United States and let's talk. We have systems that are effective. There are other platforms that are very effective".

There are other considerations at play as well, the official said.

"But I think there's also a very positive message. We are now able to cooperate in ways that we could not before. We are now reaching agreements that we did not have before that allow us to consider sales that were incomprehensible only five years ago," the official said.

"So, we look forward to continuing the conversation because this really is a conversation. Choices that are made now will establish the framework for the future and we certainly have the ambitions for the broadest possible, deepest possible military relationship with India," the official said.

The official underscored that the US was ready to discuss the full array of equipment available to address India's concerns.&nbsp;

India's buying of S-400 from Russia will have serious implications on defence ties: US

The US has said that it is closely working with India to minimise any impact of New Delhi reducing oil imports from Iran as Washington has refused to give waivers to any country from its <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/the-debate-behind-trumps-move-to-tighten-iran-oil-sanctions-215055">sanctions on the West Asian country</a>.

US State Department spokesperson Morgan Ortagus, while replying to a question in a briefing said, "So we work – we coordinated closely, of course, with them to minimize any negative impact".

She explained that Washington's "goal... is for everyone" to "cease importing Iranian oil entirely" and "we appreciate everyone who has worked with us steadfastly to get to zero".

A couple of weeks ago, Iran's foreign minister Javad Zarif had visited New Delhi and met External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj regarding many issues including the import of oil.

On purchase of oil from Iran, Sushma Swaraj told Zarif that a decision on the same will be taken after the elections result keeping in mind "our commercial considerations, energy security and economic interests".

Even though there hasn't been any statement from the Ministry of External Affairs or the petroleum ministry if India has cut oil imports from Iran, Indian envoy to the US, Harsh Vardhan Shringla was quoted as saying that New Delhi has reduced oil import from the West Asian country.

"India had already sharply decreased its imports from Iran and bought one million tonnes (tons) of crude in April, the last month before Washington stepped up its pressure campaign against Tehran and ended all exemptions to sanctions. That's it. After that we haven't imported any," Mr Shringla was quoted by news agency PTI.

The India-Iran bilateral trade during the fiscal year 2016-17 stood at $12.89 billion of which New Delhi imported $10.5 billion worth of goods - mainly crude oil.

Working to minimise any negative impact: US on India cutting oil imports from Iran

The Trump administration on Tuesday removed India from its <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/us-treasury-again-says-china-is-not-manipulating-currency-222375">currency monitoring</a> list of major trading partners, citing certain developments and steps being taken by New Delhi which address some of its major concerns.

Switzerland is the other nation that has been removed by the US from its currency monitoring list which among others include China, Japan, South Korea, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam.

"India has been removed from the monitoring list in this report, having met only one out of three criteria - a significant bilateral surplus with the US - for two consecutive reports," the Treasury Department said in its latest semi-annual report on macroeconomic and foreign exchange policies of major trading partners of the US sent to the Congress.

After purchasing foreign exchange on net in 2017, the central bank steadily sold reserves for most of 2018, with net sales of foreign exchange reaching 1.7 per cent of GDP over the year, it said.

India maintains ample reserves according to the IMF metrics for reserve adequacy, it said.

In both Switzerland and India, there was a notable decline in 2018 in the scale and frequency of foreign exchange purchases, the report said.

"Neither Switzerland nor India met the criteria for having engaged in persistent, one-sided intervention in either the October 2018 report or this report. Both Switzerland and India have been removed from the monitoring list,"&nbsp;the Treasury said in its report running into over 40 pages.

India for the first time was placed by the US in its currency monitoring list of countries with potentially questionable foreign exchange policies in May 2018 along with five other countries - China, Germany, Japan, South Korea and Switzerland.

In its next report in October 2018, the Treasury had said that India has made improvements and its name would be removed from the currency manipulation list in the next report.

"India's circumstances have shifted markedly, as the central bank's net sales of foreign exchange over the first six months of 2018 led net purchases over the four quarters through June 2018 to fall to $4 billion, or 0.2 per cent of the GDP," the Treasury had said in its October 2018 report.&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/business-economy/rbi-to-issue-new-rs-20-denomination-banknotes-213834">The Reserve Bank of India </a>(RBI) on Friday proposed introducing a liquidity coverage ratio (LCR) for large non-banking finance companies (NBFC) to help tackle liquidity problems in the sector.

The central bank said it planned to implement LCR, a liquidity buffer, "in a calibrated manner" over four years starting from April 2020.

The LCR is proposed for all deposit-taking NBFCs, and non-deposit taking NBFCs with an asset size of 50 billion rupees ($720 million) and above.

NBFCs will have to maintain minimum high-quality liquid assets of 100% of total net cash outflows over the following 30 calendar days.

Sources told Reuters this week that the central bank was concerned about liquidity issues facing some of the so-called shadow banks such as mortgage or auto lenders and wants to ensure the problems do not become a systemic issue.

The collapse of the Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services (IL&amp;FS) last year triggered a series defaults across the shadow banking sector, as borrowing costs for the sector surged.

India plans liquidity buffer at shadow banks to aid stressed sector

Sri Lanka is in advanced talks with India and Japan to construct a container terminal at the port in Colombo, next to a Chinese terminal built as part of Beijing's Belt and Road Initiative, government officials said.

The involvement of India and Japan is the latest sign that Sri Lanka wants to neutralise the growing influence of China, which has poured money into the South Asian island under its mammoth Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) infrastructure plan, to the alarm of other Asian powers.

A source close to the Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka said a framework for the terminal project will be "signed soon", while another source said the project would cost about $500 million and India and Japan will nominate companies that will handle the containers from their respective countries.

"The deal is being negotiated among Sri Lanka, India and Japan," Sudarshana Gunawardana, an official in Sri Lankan Prime Minister <a href="https://www.wionews.com/south-asia/lanka-pm-ranil-wickremesinghe-appeals-to-parents-to-send-their-children-to-school-without-fear-220203/amp">Ranil Wickremesinghe</a>'s office told Reuters. The Sri Lankan government will have a 51 per cent stake in the terminal, he said.

Chinese firms have a mandate to operate Colombo International Container Terminals (CICT) and develop another terminal on a 269-hectare plot of reclaimed land there.

This is not the first time that Sri Lanka has held talks with India and Japan to develop a container terminal.

A previous proposal for a terminal, with the state-run Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) owning a 15% stake and the remainder held by a consortium of firms from Japan, India and Sri Lanka was scuttled last year after a backlash from trade unions.

Trade unions protested against the privatisation of state assets including those being developed by Chinese firms, a dispute that led to President Maithripala Sirisena sacking Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in October. Wickremesinghe was reinstated later after a court ruling.

A spokesman at SLPA said the company was unaware of the latest talks given they are being conducted between the governments.

"All the flashpoints are defused in the new deal compared to the earlier one," one Sri Lankan government source privy to the discussions said.

The three countries will set up a company to operate the terminal after the Sri Lankan cabinet approves the deal. Japan will provide a 40-year soft loan with a 0.1 per cent interest rate with a 10-year grace period, this source said.

A diplomat at the Japanese embassy in Colombo also confirmed negotiations on the port terminal were taking place.

"Japanese funding will be decided later once the framework is finalised," the diplomat said.

The sources and diplomats declined to be identified as they are not authorised to speak to the media.

India has been trying to counterbalance China's growing influence in Sri Lanka, which New Delhi has long considered its own backyard. India accounts for around 70 percent of the transshipment business in Colombo port.

China has also taken over a new $1.5 billion port city in Hambantota, in southeast Sri Lanka - which sits on a key east-west global shipping route - after Sri Lanka was unable to service debt payments.

However, Sri Lanka has also signed an agreement with a subsidiary of an Indian firm for a $3.85 billion oil refinery near the Chinese controlled port in Hambantota, and India is in advanced talks with Sri Lankan authorities for a joint venture to operate a Chinese-built airport in Hambantota.

With the general elections over and the new government all set to take the charge, a lot of incoming foreign visits are expected in months to come. Four important visits are already confirmed which include a visit by Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping both will be coming to India for the 2nd informal summit. In May last year, PM Modi met with Russian President Vladimir Putin for an informal summit in the resort town of Sochi in Russia.

In April 2018, PM Modi met Chinese President Xi Jinping for the informal summit in Wuhan which came in the backdrop of Doklam crisis of 2017 which saw a standoff between the Indian and the Chinese armies in the Bhutanese territory claimed by Beijing.

Another important visit will be that of the German Chancellor who will be visiting India for the 5th Intergovernmental Consultation. Confirming the visit, the new German envoy, Walter J Lindner told WION, "Chancellor will come again to India, at the end of the year. We have not yet fixed the date, but it will be October and November."

Chancellor Merkel visited India in October 2015. PM Modi visited Germany four times during his first term.&nbsp;

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit is yet to be confirmed, New Delhi was ready to host the Isreali leader even before the dates of general elections were announced. The visit could not take place due to scheduling issues.

Asked when the visit will happen, Isreali envoy to India Ron Malka told WION, "hopefully in the near future, we will see, some kind of a visit, I am not sure when it will be, it is a matter of schedule. The PM wanted to come and will come."

Benjamin Netanyahu paid a visit to India in 2018 while Prime Minister Modi became the first Indian PM to visit Israel in July 2017.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will also be visiting India this year for the 14th India-Japan Annual Summit that alternates its location between India and Japan. Last year PM Modi visited Japan for the 13th Annual Summit during which Japan announced it will be joining New Delhi-led International Solar Alliance and signed a Currency Swap Agreement.&nbsp;

The annual summit has become an occasion for both sides to show special gestures as part of growing ties between the two countries. In a special gesture, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was hosted by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe for a private dinner at his ancestral home in Yamanashi in 2018. It was the first time when such a reception was extended to a foreign leader. In 2017, PM Abe visited PM Modi's home state Gujarat where he was given a special welcome.

Putin, Xi Jinping, Merkel, Shinzo Abe and Netanyahu to visit India this year

They travelled the road less taken, chose to endure all hardships to break the stigma and re-write the norms. Some of them left their families at a young age, some of them lost their colleagues to violence, yet they persist and pursue their calling. The latest hurdle that they want to cross is that of the language barrier and that’s what had brought them to India.

24 Afghani women journalists are in Chennai to attend an eight-week training program that aims to impart English communication skills. The initiative comes under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation Programme and aims to take forward the existing diplomatic and strategic relationship and improve people-to-people contact.&nbsp;

The women journalists, aged between 26 and 33, have a wide-ranging experience under various roles in the print and broadcast media as presenters, writers, editors, technical directors. They are being trained by the faculty at the National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research (NITTR).&nbsp;

As Afghanistan had stints of democracy interspersed with Taliban rule, women journalists face challenges not only in their society at large but also from their very own families.

Speaking to WION, Wida Saghary, an Afghan journalist with over 12 years of experience said, “In the initial years, when we wanted to interview people in the bazaar, they hurled things at us and would gossip about women journalists. It was difficult for families to send daughters to join the media.”

She added that while there were quite a lot of journalist training centres in the capital city Kabul and the nearby provinces, few journalism aspirants even travelled to India, Turkey, Russia, America and Europe for their academic pursuits.

Diba Selgai, a social media officer said that many women aspire to appear on the screen, but they face&nbsp;the risk of being spoken ill about and being perceived in a negative manner. She added that when women journalists defy the status quo, it has a serious democratic effect on society. Rather than having democracy imposed from outside, working women can show the way and bring in democracy from within the society, she said.

The women also spoke about their employer which had over 50 per cent women workers in main positions as compared to the industry average of about 20 per cent women. A journalist recollected her roots in Laghman province, a Taliban stronghold, and how her uncle warned her father about God not accepting his prayer due to his daughter’s education and career choice.&nbsp;

There were also instances of women being attacked by their kith and kin for the path they chose, the most recent being the case of a Pashtun journalist who was killed by her husband, recalled the media professionals.

However, the journalists expressed optimism about how their country is evolving. They said nowadays, it is comfortable to work outside and that they have the support of their families who are supporting the girls and not hesitating to send them abroad for studies.

Accepting the responsibility of the media in transforming the image of the country, they said that it is important to break free from the stereotypes of Burkha, war and Taliban.&nbsp;

Speaking of their time in Chennai, the women said that it was refreshing and empowering to see women working late in the night, going shopping, working as vendors. They wished for a similar transformation in their society, where it is generally considered unsafe for women to venture out in the nights.&nbsp;

Outlining the initiative of the Indian government to support developing nations and their citizens, Dr Sudhindra Nath Panda, Director of NITTTR said, “The ITEC programme was started in 1964 and cover over 150 countries. Our missions abroad have been taking care of the VISA formalities of the students/professionals and the travel, course, accommodation expenses are funded by the Indian government.” He added that so far 95 Afghan citizens have attended the programme, of which over 40 were women.&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/india-voices-concern-over-delays-in-reimbursement-to-un-peacekeeping-contributing-countries-219539">India has emphasised</a> that peacebuilding activities will give sustainable results only if they align with a nation's priorities and its leaders and institutions are involved in the implementation.

Speaking at the General Assembly on Monday, India's Deputy Permanent Representative Nagaraj Naidu said, "This would ensure that gains are long-term and prevent any relapse."

"India believes that the efforts undertaken by the PBC (Peacebuilding Commission) in various countries and regions will result in sustainable outcomes if national ownership is strictly followed," India's Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador K Nagaraj Naidu said.

Naidu said the peacebuilding activities should align with the national priorities and implemented with the involvement of the country's leadership and national institutions.

He emphasised that today's conflicts are increasingly intra-state, involving non-state actors and international terror networks.

"The complex and interlinked nature of conflicts have much wider implications across countries. We, therefore, have a collective interest in building and sustaining peace," he said.

India recognises and welcomes the importance of expanding cooperation with regional organisations in peacebuilding efforts, Naidu said adding that India also supports the advisory, flexible and convening role of the PBC in its interactions with its parent bodies - the General Assembly, Security Council and the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), with the objective of pursuing a coherent and integrated approach to building and sustaining peace.

The Peacebuilding Fund (PBF), during last one year, supported projects worth USD 183 million in 40 countries.

Naidu pointed out that the high donor contributions to the fund in the last two years is a clear sign of confidence in the contribution of the UN to peacebuilding.

Underscoring the "important" role of women and youth in peacebuilding and in its decision-making, Naidu said India commands the fund for exceeding its own record of previous years by allocating 40 per cent of funds in support of gender equality and women's empowerment during 2018.

"Skill development and employment generation for youth play a significant role in building and sustaining peace," he said.

Naidu further said that there is a clear recognition of the importance of sustainable and inclusive economic growth and political processes in preventing conflict as well as undertaking effective peacebuilding efforts.

"India continues to expand its development partnership efforts with fellow developing countries to assist in their developmental priorities," he said adding that as a member of the Peacebuilding Commission since its inception, India looks forward to playing a constructive role in pursuing the objectives of achieving peace and prosperity for our peoples.

The Peacebuilding Commission looks forward to a review of its work in 2020 by the General Assembly and the Security Council as an opportunity to take stock of progress made and to explore ways to strengthen the UN efforts in forging sustainable peace in places where conflict once reigned, the General Assembly heard during the debate as it took up the Secretary-General's annual reports on the Commission and the Peacebuilding Fund.

The Assembly, acting without a vote, adopted a draft resolution contained in a report of its Special Political and Decolonisation Committee (Fourth Committee) entitled "Comprehensive review of the whole question of peacekeeping operations in all their aspects."

Through the draft resolution, the Assembly took note of the report of the Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations. It also decided that the Special Committee shall continue its efforts for a comprehensive review of the whole question of peacekeeping operations, review the implementation of its previous proposals and consider any new proposals as a way to enhance the Organisation's capacity to fulfil its responsibilities in that field.

India has emphasised that peacebuilding activities will give sustainable results only if they align with a nation's priorities and its leaders and institutions are involved in the implementation.

The Assembly, acting without a vote, adopted a draft resolution contained in a report of its Special Political and Decolonisation Committee (Fourth Committee) entitled "Comprehensive review of the whole question of peacekeeping operations in all their aspects." Through the draft resolution, the Assembly took note of the report of the Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations. It also decided that the Special Committee shall continue its efforts for a comprehensive review of the whole question of peacekeeping operations, review the implementation of its previous proposals and consider any new proposals as a way to enhance the Organisation's capacity to fulfil its responsibilities in that field.

India offered full support to Sri Lanka in dealing with the "common threat" of "Jihadi terrorism" in the aftermath of the Easter Sunday terror attack that killed over 250 people on April 21.&nbsp;

The development comes in the backdrop of Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka's Taranjit Singh Sandhu's visit to Sri Dalada Maligawa temple in Kandy, Sri Lanka. The site is believed to house the relic of Lord Buddha's tooth.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In a release, the Indian Mission in Sri Lanka said, "High Commissioner... discussed the prevailing security situation with the most venerable Mahanayake Theros and offered India’s full support to Sri Lanka in dealing with the common threat of Jihadi terrorism."&nbsp;

The release further added, "Both the Mahanayake Theros deeply appreciated India’s unconditional and strong support for Sri Lanka including in the security sphere."&nbsp;

This is for the first time that India has publically stated this even as Sri Lanka continues its crackdown on Islamic extremist groups in the aftermath of the Easter Day attacks.

During the visit, Sandhu met Thibbatuwawe Sri Sumangala Mahanayake Thero of Malwatte Chapter (Malwathu Maha Viharaya) and Warakagoda Sri Gnanarathana Mahanayake Thero of Asgiriya Chapter (Asgiri Maha Viharaya). A Mahanayaka Thero is a title to top ranking Buddhist monks in Theravada Buddhist countries.&nbsp;

Malwathu Maha Viharaya and Asgiri Maha Viharaya are two Buddhist monasteries located in Kandy and are the headquarters of the Malwatta chapter and Asgiriya chapter of Siyam Nikaya, the two Buddhist monasteries that hold the custodianship of the sacred tooth relic of Lord Buddha kept in Sri Dalada Maligawa.

Back in India, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) had raided several places in Kerala and arrested a Riyas Aboobacker from Palakkad who was inspired by Sri Lanka terror attack mastermind Zahran Hashim. Riyas had planned to carry out suicide attacks in Kerala.&nbsp;

Sri Lanka based terror outfit - National Thowheeth Jama'ath (NTJ) planned and perpetrated the Easter Day attacks. Islamic State later claimed responsibility for the attack.&nbsp;

New Delhi had also given Sri Lanka prior intelligence of the terror attacks.

India offers support to Sri Lanka to deal with 'Jihadi terror'

Mohammad Omar Daudzai, Afghanistan's President Ashraf Ghani's special envoy for peace and chief executive of Afghanistan's high peace council was in Delhi on Friday and met with External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.&nbsp;

In an exclusive conversation with WION's Principal Diplomatic Correspondent Sidhant Sibal, Daudzai lauded India's role in building a strong state in Afghanistan and said New Delhi has a legitimate interest in the Afghan peace process. On Pakistan, he said that Islamabad needs to be encouraged to shun the use of terror as a policy.

WION: What transpired in your meet with EAM and NSA?

Mohammad Omar Daudzai: Afghanistan and India are very close partners. We have signed the strategic partnership document. India, so far, has fulfilled its commitment as a strategic partner very well. We discussed some issues related to that and also peace, reconciliation and regional coordination that is necessary for reconciliation.

WION: How do you see India's role in the Afghan peace process?

Mohammad Omar Daudzai: India is a very important player now, globally and regionally. India has invested generously in Afghanistan's peace process. Democracy in Afghanistan is important for India. India has to be involved and should be aware of what is going on. We are committed to making sure that India is with us in every step we take.&nbsp;

WION: What are your expectation from New Delhi?

Mohammad Omar Daudzai: Overall, India has helped us build a strong state, but we need further help to strengthen the state. For the peace process to prevail, we need a strong state. India is playing a key role together with our western partners. We want India to continue with it.

WION: What is the current status of the Afghan peace process?

Mohammad Omar Daudzai: The Americans and the Taliban are talking about a possible US withdrawal plan. Taliban is clarifying its relationship with terrorists and terror groups and have given a commitment that they will not keep ties with them. The next stage will be a dialogue primarily between the Afghan state and the Taliban. Ultimately, it should all reach a sustainable ceasefire.&nbsp;

WION: Your thoughts on the role played by Iran and China?

Mohammad Omar Daudzai: Afghanistan has very important geography. It is located at the crossroads, whether you go from the Middle East to India or India to central Asia, you cross Afghanistan. Instability in Afghanistan is preventing a lot of regional mega projects to be implemented. So, it is important for all those countries to be involved in the arrangement. Glad to see they are coming with the regional initiative that may, hopefully, lead to peace in Afghanistan.

WION: How do you see Pakistan's role in Afghanistan and its support to terror?

Mohammad Omar Daudzai: Well, we want to see three countries to live together in peace. Like you have breakfast in Kabul, lunch in Islamabad and dinner in Delhi. That is possible if we have the link between these three countries. Terrorism and war are the main hindrances. We should all come together, get rid of this menace and live in peace together. We will have to encourage Pakistan to change on the issue of terror.&nbsp;

India has helped build strong state in Afghanistan, Pak must shun terror: Afghan President's special envoy to WION

Two Indian climbers, including an Indian Army soldier, have died and another has gone missing in Nepal after one of them successfully scaled the world's highest peak, Mount Everest, the expedition organiser said Friday, days after two mountaineers from the country perished in the Himalayan nation.

Army soldier Ravi Thakar, 28, was found dead inside his tent at Camp IV on Mount Everest early Friday while Narayan Singh died at Camp IV on Thursday night when he was climbing down from the 8,485-meter Mount Makalu summit, world's fifth highest mountain.

Dipankar Ghos, 52, from Kolkata went missing from above Camp IV while returning from the Mount Makalu summit, said Mingma Sherpa, Chairman at Seven Summit Treks.
A search team, which reached the area from where the climber is suspected to have gone missing, however, failed to trace him, Sherpa said.

Ghos climbed Mount Everest in 2011 and has also scaled Mount Kanchenjunga, Mount Lhotse, Mount Manaslu and Mount Dhaulagiri among other peaks.
Thakar died after he suffered from high altitude sickness.

"Fellow climbers found him dead inside the tent," Sherpa was quoted as saying by a Nepalese newspaper.

Ravi was part of an eight-member expedition led by renowned Irish climber Noel Richard Hanna.

He along with other members made it to the summit of Mount Everest on Thursday morning.

Another member of the same expedition, Seamus Sean Lawless from Ireland, slipped from the balcony area while descending from the summit point.

"Fate of the missing Irish climber is still unknown," Sherpa said.

"Indian climber Narayan Singh died in Mt Makalu. He died at camp 4 while descending the summit," Nepal Tourism Ministry official Mira Acharya told PTI.

Two Indian climbers from West Bengal - Biplab Baidya (48) and Kuntal Karar (46) - died in Nepal on Wednesday due to high altitude sickness near the summit of Mount Kanchenjunga, the world's third tallest peak.

Another climber from Chile is missing from above Camp IV of Mount Kanchenjunga since Wednesday evening.

Makalu is the fifth highest mountain in the world. It is located in the Mahalangur Himalayas 19-kilometer southeast of the 8,848-meter Mount Everest, on the border between Nepal and Tibet Autonomous Region, China.

Hundreds of climbers flock each year to Nepal - home to several of the world's highest mountains, to scale Himalayan peaks during the spring season that begins around March and ends in June.&nbsp;
