On the eve of the important day for Ukraine, WION's Mohammed Saleh spoke with Yuriy Sak, advisor to Ukraine's defence minister.</p>

<p><strong>WION:</strong> Mr Sak this a crucial moment in terms of what is happening in the war. Tomorrow marks exactly six months since Russia invaded Ukraine. Also tomorrow is your 31st independence anniversary from the former Soviet Union. And in keeping with this, Ukraine has said that it has received intelligence that Russia may try to do something reallu ugly. What is the threat you perceive from Russia tomorrow?</p>

<p><strong>Yuriy Sak:</strong> Hello and thank you for inviting me. Indeed tomorrow is a great national celebration for our country. It's our independence day and this is a celebration that we take very seriously. This will also be the day when we will have six months of aggressive war against Ukraine. And I want to stress that this is a war Russian aggressor was hoping to conduct in three days. They were planning to conquer the whole of Ukraine in maximum of seven days. And our Minister of Defence Oleksiy Reznikov, he personally saw, in the Russian tanks which were left by the occupiers in Kyiv, parade uniforms. They were planning to conduct this war very quickly, to destroy Ukrainian leadership, and to occupy our territory completely. Instead of that what we have now is parade of destroyed Russian tanks on Kyiv central street.&nbsp;</p>

<p>We as a nation have been very very heroically defending our country and European freedom from the Russian aggressor. Ahead of tomorrow's celebrations, we are of course now on high-alert because Russia in addition to being a war criminal and terrorist state has a very strange way of treating certain dates. Ukraine's independence is something that Russia wants to destroy. It wants to destroy Ukrainian people. This is why we are referring to this as genocide. And this is why we are calling on the international community to recognise Russia officially as state sponsor of terrorism.</p>

<p>So tomorrow is a big day. But I want to also stress that we have been living in an atmosphere of missile terror from Russia for last six months. Every day, Russia conducts missile strikes on Ukrainian cities. Every day, peaceful Ukrainian citizens are dying in these missile strikes. So in a sense, tomorrow will be, unfortunately, an ordinary day in the new normal we've been living in since February 24. But we hope that our fears will not come true. And we hope that tomorrow's celebrations will not be spoilt by another atrocity on the part of Russia.</p>

<p><strong>WION:</strong> This is the issue that a lot of people are talking about around the world, especially in the aftermath of what has happened to Darya Dugina, the daughter of Alexander Dugin, the philosopher and the far-right thinker, someone who is considered to be the brain of Vladimir Putin. Russia has unequivocally accused Ukraine of carrying out her assassination. What does Ukraine have to say for it?</p>

<p><strong>Yuriy Sak:</strong> Our official position is very simple. We are not Russians. We are not terrorists. We do not fight with civillian population. We even don't fight with civillians who are hateful towards Ukraine. Because as you probably know, Mr Dugin used to say that Ukrainians must be killed and killed. And his late daughter who was killed in that accident, we are prone to believe that this was a false flag terrorist operation. Our intelligence agencies say that this most probably was an insider job. It was a provocation by the Russians. We do not carry killings of those people because we are a civilized democracy. We fight our enemy on the battlefield. And we value their human life very highly.</p>

<p><strong>WION:</strong> I need to ask you about what has happened in Crimea over the course of last 10-12 days. Because your President Volodymyr Zelensky has been saying that Ukraine will stage a counter-attack, that Ukraine will re-conquer Crimea which has been occupied by Russia. What we've seen over the course of last 10-15 days, that there has been a series of mysterious and unexplained explosions which have targetted Russian military installations. Ukraine hasn't directly claimed responsibility for a lot of these attacks that have taken place in Crimea. But is Ukraine behind these explosions?</p>

<p><strong>Yuriy Sak: </strong>Let's be clear. Crimea is a sovereign territory of Ukraine. It is an internationally recognised territory of Ukraine which was illegally annexed by Russia in 2014. This is an internationally recognised fact. Point number 2, we have two things to say to Russian occupiers, and this has been our position all the while. Since Crimea is part of Ukraine, we will liberate it sooner or later. It just depends on how quickly we receive interational assistance and high-precision weaponry.</p>

<p>Third point, all we have to say to Russian occupiers who are in Crimea as well as other temporarily occupied parts of Ukraine, they have to get out from our country.</p>

<p>Namaskaram. In the life of a nation, seventy-five years of independence is not too much time. The important thing to take into consideration is where we were and where we are today. In 1947 when India attained its independence, the average life expectancy of an Indian was twenty-eight years. Today it is seventy plus years. This is a phenomenal achievement, and this is what nation building means – that people are living longer and living better.</p>

<p>So Amrit is definitely beginning to flow. The only problem is it is not getting to every citizen in the country. The prosperity and wellbeing we have achieved through successful businesses, successful education system and successful scientific enterprise have touched and transformed hundreds and millions of lives. But still there are many unfortunate citizens who have not been touched by this. Right now, our endeavour should be towards this. If this needs to happen, of course, the governments have the basic responsibility; but the responsibility is also upon every citizen to ensure that the wellbeing that a large segment of India is beginning to taste happens to every citizen.</p>

<p>In this direction there are many things to be done. One of the most fundamental things is to ensure that we have food security. From famine conditions of the ‘50s, we have come to a place where we are producing food for the entire population of 1.3 billion people. We not only have full-scale food security in the country, we are also able to export foods and contribute to other nations which are troubled. But in this process, we have caused much damage to the environment, severe damage to the soils. It is very important to address this if we want to create a Bhavya Bharat which lasts for a long time, as a not only a wonderful nation to live in but also as a true light or beacon to the rest of the world.</p>

<p>We can bring wellbeing not only to Bharat but to the whole world, because we have the necessary capabilities, the knowledge and, above all, a fantastic cultural foundation which no other nation can boast of.</p>

<p>So here we are at seventy-five years of independence. This is a time when the citizens of this nation – such a diverse population – must get together as one and make the dream of Bhavya Bharat into a reality. Let us make it happen.</p>

<p>On August 15 2020, MS Dhoni announced his retirement from international cricket. On the evening of the historic day for the nation, with the countrymen busy in Independence day celebrations, one of India's greatest&nbsp;cricketers Dhoni decided to step aside from int'l cricket after a year-long sabbatical since the 2019 ODI World Cup semi-final.</p>

<p>After Dhoni's 72-ball 50 couldn't take India to the 2019 ODI WC final, losing to eventual runners-up New Zealand by 18 runs, the former Indian captain made himself unavailable at the highest level and was on a sabbatical until he finally announced his retirement two years back on&nbsp;August 15. Dhoni, who is often known for his unorthodox style, shared an emotional Instagram post to announce the big decision.</p>

<p>He captioned it, "Thanks. Thanks a lot for ur love and support throughout.from 1929 hrs consider me as Retired."</p>

<p>PM Modi praised the zeal of the Indian citizens who faced innumerable problems after independence but did not bow down. "There were problems of food security, war, terrorism, natural calamities but India marched forward against all odds," PM Modi said in his speech.</p>

<p>He further said that he had dedicated himself to fulfilling Mahatma Gandhi's vision of empowering the last man in queue.&nbsp;Talking about how the country's diversity was dear to Gandhi, PM said, "Our nation has proved we have inherent strength coming from our diversity. <p>Calling the current time as "Amrit Kaal," Modi said that it is providing golden opportunity to everyone to fulfil their dreams. "We are proud that aspirations are present in every household in India and that&nbsp;every citizen is excited for the progress of new India," he said.</p>

<p>Talking about India's development in the past few years, PM Modi said that from renewable energy to better infrastructure for medical education, India has improved on every front. He said that experience shows that once we resolve to fulfil our goals, we should not try to imitate others. "When we are connected to our roots, then only we can fly high; when we fly high, we will provide solutions to the entire world," he said.</p>

<p>He also praised the success of Digital India and mentioned how startups driven by youth from Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities have contributed to the country's growth.</p>

<p>"Any nation that has progressed, has discipline ingrained in its citizens; if all follow their responsibilities, India will grow fast," he added.</p>

<p>India has many languages and PM Modi said that even though there are language barriers, we need to be proud of every language in our country. "Equality is the cornerstone of India's progress and we need to make sure we are united through the mantra of 'India first'," he said.</p>

<p>PM Modi also talked about the importance of respecting women and mentioned how some people are not treating them right and insulting them. He said, "Can we take pledge to get rid of this behaviour? Respect for Women is an important pillar of India's growth, we need to support our 'Nari Shakti'. If we look at 'nari shakti' in law, education, science and police, our daughters and mothers are making major contributions to India."</p>

<p>PM Modi raised the topic of 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' initiative and commended forces for taking it forward. He stressed how important the initiative is and called for the need to take it forward as 'Jan Andolan'. "For the first time in 75 years, made-in-India gun has been used for ceremonial gun salute from Red Fort," he said.</p>

<p>He mentioned how even children have been practicing it. "I salute children who are saying no to imported toys. When a 5-year-old says 'no videshi', 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' is running through his veins," he said.</p>

<p>PM Modi also called for "Jai Anusandhan" to promote innovation in India during 'Azadi ka Amrit mahotsav'. He asked the private sector to play a key role in Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, saying that India can make for the world now.</p>

<p>"India is making history in the manufacturing sector. From space sector to drone manufacturing to natural farming, India is progressing rapidly in every sector," he said.</p>

<p>Talking about how India's "techade" is here, PM Modi said, with 5G, chip manufacturing, we are bringing revolution through Digital India to grassroots. He also said how revolutionary changes are coming in the health sector through digital technology.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"India's industrial growth will come from grassroots. Our MSMEs, street vendors and those in organised sectors need to be strengthened," he said.</p>

<p>PM Modi talked about green jobs, saying how natural farming will strengthen India and generate multiple employment opportunities. He further said that the capabilities of small farmers, small industrialists &amp; traders among others are guarantee to a capable India.</p>
