In 2018, Pakistan had 69 million people living in poverty. By June 2020, 18 million more may slip below the poverty line. Pakistan has the worst infant mortality rate in the world.

Because the country spends less than one per cent of its GDP on health. Only 58 per cent of Pakistan's population was literate as of 2018.

And if you are a regular viewer of this show, you are well aware of the state of Pakistan's economy. They are surviving on loans, the inflation rate has broken records.

When the state of affairs is so dire, what should be the government's priority? The list is quite predictable - boost earnings, fix leakages within the system, spend on education, healthcare and create more opportunities for the common man.

WION Edit: Why Pakistan's Imran Khan is chasing the wrong priorities

At least seven people died and more than 100 hospitalised after a gas leaked in Pakistan's port city of Karachi late on Sunday. It has been more than 24 hours and still, the cause of the leak remains unknown.

So why this leak is a significant challenge not just for Pakistan, but globally as well. Let's understand the developments.

The leak is extremely close to Pakistan's nuclear facility and occurred at Keamari, a major tourist spot. In 2011, a seven-hour emergency was declared at the nuclear power plant in Karachi after a gas leak, which triggered massive fears.

Pakistan's nuclear installations also have a patchy track record, despite the country making contrary claims in an attempt to silence global concerns. Pakistan: How Karachi's fatal gas leak exposes a deepening crisis

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday said that his country has no more militant safe havens left and his government fully backs the Afghan peace process.

Khan's comments came at a time when the United States and Taliban appear on the verge of signing a deal that would ensure the US begin pulling out troops from Afghanistan.

Taliban, in return, would enter talks with the Afghan government, reduce violence and work towards a complete ceasefire, among others.

However, the Taliban on Sunday carried out an attack in a security checkpoint in the northern province of Kunduz. Taliban claimed that 19 security personnel were killed in the attack. Afghan officials said that five people died in the attack.

Despite the attack, one of the Taliban's senior leaders said that the US and the militant group would sign a deal by the end of February in Doha.

Addressing a conference which marked 40 years of Pakistan giving shelter to Afghan refugees, the Pakistani PM also said that his country cannot "completely guarantee" that no Taliban are hiding among the Afghans living in Pakistan. However, he said, that his administration has done everything to prevent attacks in Afghanistan.

Earlier Sarwar Danish, Afghanistan's second vice president claimed that Pakistan is allowing Taliban to recruit new militants from Afghan refugee camps in Pakistan.

US peace envoy Zalmay Khalilzad, who has played a key role in the dialogue between the Taliban and the US also attended the conference.

The US has "commitments from the Talibs on security issues," Khalilzad said.

Last week, officials said that a seven-day "reduction in violence" by the Taliban, US and Afghanistan forces would kick-off as part of the confidence-building measures.

Imran Khan claims no safe haven for militants left in Pakistan

Amid the crucial Financial Action Task Force (FATF) meet on terror financing in Paris, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has accused Pakistan of its failure to take concrete steps against terrorism.

While meeting Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker and a number of other members of the US House of Representatives on the sideline of the 56th Munich Security Conference, President Ghani said, "We haven`t seen any notable developments and concrete anti-terrorism step taken by Pakistan."

He said the Taliban's sanctuaries remain a dilemma that must be addressed.

Ghani stressed that the Taliban are still engaged in drug trafficking while discussing the issue with the US Congressional delegation.

They discussed a range of issues pertaining to security, peace process and President Ghani`s prospect on it, Afghanistan's fight against narcotics and terrorist groups, where terrorism was termed as a common threat to the region as well as Afghanistan`s allies.

President Ghani elucidated the Afghan government's vision and commitment for sustainable and inclusive peace, with an emphasis on protecting the hard-earned gains of the past two decades.

The President provided information on the Afghan government`s economic plans and answered questions raised by the US Senators on the reduction of American troops in Afghanistan and its impacts as well as aftermaths in the region and Afghanistan.

He said the Afghan defence and security forces are leading 94 per cent of the operations and the forces are capable enough to defend their people and homeland.

Having talked over the peace process, the president said the potential threats and opportunities must be precisely evaluated, adding that the government of Afghanistan has the determination, wisdom and capability to analyse the opportunities appropriately in order to bring sustainable peace to the country.

The participants also discussed ensuring the interests of Afghanistan and the United States.

"We are still confronting a medium to long-term common threats that require joint commitment to tackle them," Ghani said.

Prime Minister Imran Khan said on Friday that the trade ties between Pakistan and Turkey had entered a new era as the two countries signed 13 agreements including a joint declaration on strategic economic framework to promote their multi-faceted relationship.

The agreements were signed on the second and final day of the two-day visit of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Pakistan.

The State-run Pakistan Television (PTV) reported that the agreements were about cooperation in the fields of tourism and culture, food security, postal services, railways, military training, trade, transport and infrastructure and information technology.

An agreement was also signed for cooperation between the state-owned Turkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT) and PTV and Radio Pakistan.

President Erdogan and Prime Minister Khan also signed two documents, including the declaration of a strategic economic framework and the joint declaration.

Later, addressing a joint press conference, President Erdogan said that the two sides were committed to deepening economic ties.

"In the last meeting in Ankara, we had agreed to bring the level of our foreign trade volume to USD 5 billion by 2023. The strategic economic framework and its next action plan is almost ready... It is the roadmap for how we can deepen our economic relations," he said.

Erdogan offered to assist Pakistan in areas of transportation, energy, tourism, health care, education and law enforcement. He said the two countries also enjoyed good defence ties.

Prime minister Khan thanked Turkey for its support on various issues, especially on Kashmir. He also said that Turkey was supportive of Pakistan on the issue of its efforts to come out of the grey list of the Financial Action Task Force.

Khan said the trade relationship between the two nations entered a new era with the signing of MoUs for strategic economic cooperation.

He also supported Turkey on its concerns over the threat of terrorism coming from Syria.

Separately, Turkish defence minister Hulusi Akar called on Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa and discussed "matters of mutual interest, regional security and measures to further enhance bilateral defence collaboration were discussed," according to a statement by the Pakistan Army.

"The visiting dignitary appreciated Pakistan's contributions for conflict prevention in the region and for standing by Turkey and pledged the same for Pakistan," the statement said.

Pakistan, Turkey ink 13 agreements to boost bilateral ties

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan on Friday said he would help Pakistan stay off a terrorism financing blacklist at a meeting of a global financial watchdog, a move he suggested would counter "political pressure" from Islamabad's critics.

The Financial Action Task Force (FATF), which tackles money laundering, told Islamabad late last year that it could face blacklisting if it continued to apply inadequate controls over terrorism financing.

The FATF is meeting next week in France, and support from Turkey and longtime allies like China, Malaysia and Saudi Arabia could help Pakistan remain off the blacklist. A minimum of three votes are required for any country to escape the blacklisting.

If it joined the blacklist alongside Iran and North Korea, Islamabad would face sanctions and economic setbacks at a time when its economy is struggling with a balance of payment crisis.

"We will be supporting Pakistan at the Financial Action Task Force meetings, where Pakistan is subject to political pressure," Erdogan told Pakistan's parliament a day after he arrived in Islamabad.

The FATF already has Pakistan on its "gray-list" of countries with inadequate controls over curbing money laundering and terrorism financing.

But its arch-rival India, which came close to war with its nuclear-armed neighbour last year, wants Pakistan blacklisted.

Of 40 recommendations made by the watchdog, Pakistan had fully complied with only one, largely complied with nine, partially complied with 26, and totally missed four parameters, which were mandatory if Islamabad wanted to be removed from the gray-list, a review by the group last year said.

The FATF says Pakistan should adequately identify, assess and understand risks associated with militant groups operating in Pakistan such as Islamic State group, al-Qaeda, Jamat-ud-Dawa (JuD), Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), which continue to raise funds openly.

Pakistan says it has made a significant improvement on the requirements since the last review.

Islamabad says it has seized the groups' assets and put the militants on trials, like the entire leadership of the JuD, including its chief Hafiz Saeed, the alleged mastermind of the 2008 Mumbai attacks in India, which killed 166 people.

In a move praised by Washington as an important step forward, Saeed was jailed for 11 years on Wednesday on terrorism financing charges.

Pakistan remained committed to the earliest completion of its FATF action plan, Minister for Economic Affairs Hammad Azhar tweeted on Wednesday.

Turkey to oppose Pakistan blacklisting at anti-terrorism finance meet

Pakistan's government has approved new rules for regulating cyberspace which opponents say could be used to stifle dissent and free speech.

Under regulations that were approved by the cabinet late last month but were not immediately made public, social media companies will be obliged to help law enforcement agencies access data and to remove online content deemed unlawful.

Companies that do not comply with the rules risk being blocked online, according to a copy of the regulations seen by Reuters.

The approval of the new rules follows accusations by opposition parties that Prime Minister Imran Khan’s government has sought to intimidate and silence its opponents and allegations of media censorship. Pakistan's military has also faced accusations of cracking down on media and free speech.

But Shoaib Ahmad Siddiqi, the top official at the ministry of information technology that authored the regulations, said the new rules would help "identify and weed out unwanted and slanderous online content."

"We needed to do it to uphold the integrity, decency and respect of individuals and sanctity of institutions," he said.

The new rules on social media are described by the authors as intended to prevent live streaming of online content relating to "terrorism, extremism, hate speech, defamation, fake news, incitement to violence and national security."

Social media companies will be obliged within 24 hours to respond to a request to remove "unlawful" material, or six hours in emergency cases. They will have three months to register with authorities in Pakistan and must have a physical presence in Pakistan.

When required, the companies will be required to provide subscriber information, traffic data, content data and any other information or data that is sought, the regulations stipulate.

The rules also state that interpretations of the regulations by the authorities in Pakistan "shall take precedence over any community standards or rules or community guidelines or policies or any other instruments devised by a social media company."

'Overreach'

Nighat Dad, who runs the not-for-profit Digital Rights Foundation in Pakistan, says the new rules will give the authorities unflinching powers to stifle social media.

"The worrying part for me is that the definition around extremism, religion or culture is so wide and ambiguous and that means they have these unfettered power to call any online content illegal or extremist or anti-state," she told Reuters.

"I do fear that this will be used against dissent, free speech and for political gains."

Farieha Aziz, founder of Bolo Bhi, a digital rights advocacy group, also voiced concern.

"This is the kind of overreach we were worried about," she said. "They're trying to go beyond the ambit of the law, trying to go above and beyond what the law allows them to do."

Pakistan's government approves new social media rules, opponents cry foul

Countries that have anything to do with China in the region have been busy reporting cases, but not Pakistan which has a large people-to-people exchange with China.

The new coronavirus epidemic is about to peak. Despite the huge financial loss, countries across the world have halted flights to China because prevention is paramount in times like these.

However, Pakistan still has thousands of people coming to and fro from China even today. Islamabad doesn't have a single confirmed case yet which seems next to impossible.

Pakistan is probably among the most vulnerable countries to the virus. A big working population linked to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is always in transit, besides businessmen travelling for trade purposes.

When 28 countries in the world have reported confirmed cases of coronavirus, how come Pakistan hasn't? Pakistan had initially stopped flights to China, but resumed them 10 days ago.

Three flights from China landed in Pakistan on February 3 with more than 350 passengers, including Chinese nationals.

The same day when Pakistan's health ministry made a grand announcement, it had finally developed its own coronavirus testing kit.

That's how inexplicably slow Pakistan has been in dealing with this outbreak. Just 46 people have been quarantined till now, of which 5 are suspected cases.

352 Chinese people arrived via Lahore and Islamabad between February 3 and February 10. Its own students and nationals stuck in China have sent out frantic pleas for help, but Pakistan has refused to bring them back.

Pakistan has been busy praising China, hailing it for having a strong mechanism to deal with the contagion and washing its hands off the fate of its own citizens.

Pakistan might be China's all-weather ally, but this is taking it too far. The truth is that Pakistan is just not prepared to deal with it, and it has admitted to not having enough isolation facilities too.

For now, most people are just screened and then eventually sent away - if they have a fever or symptoms then they are investigated.

But still, no standard operating procedure to quarantine people. And this should not come as a surprise because Pakistan has a poor track record of handling disease outbreaks. It's one of the only two countries in the world which has failed to eliminate polio.

For now, the Pakistan government is in a state of denial, it's scared of what would happen if it faces the truth.

Countries that have anything to do with China in the region have been busy reporting cases, but not Pakistan which has a large people-to-people exchange with China.

In a statement, the foreign office spokesperson Aisha Farooqui said that PM Imran is visiting Kuala Lumpur on the invitation of his Malaysia counterpart Mahathir Mohamad.

During the visit, the two prime ministers would have a one-on-one meeting, followed by delegation-level talks, she said and added that they will witness the signing of important agreements and MoUs, and have joint press stakeout.

Khan's visit to Malaysia at the invitation of his Malaysian counterpart Mahathir Mohamad comes after he skipped the Kuala Lumpur summit of some 20 Muslim countries in December attended by leaders from countries like Iran, Turkey and Qatar.

Khan did not attend the summit, reportedly due to pressure exerted by Saudi Arabia, which had extended liberal financial assistance to Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government to stave off the looming economic crisis, Dawn newspaper reported.

The Express Tribune, quoting sources, reported that the visit of prime minister Khan is aimed at removing misgivings Malaysia may have about Pakistan for skipping the Kuala Lumpur summit.

Pakistan initially confirmed its participation at the summit but changed its mind after Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries voiced concerns over it. Riyadh is reported to have viewed the summit as an attempt to create a new Islamic bloc, the reports said.

During his visit to Malaysia, Prime Minister Khan will also highlight the human rights and humanitarian situation in Jammu and Kashmir, his office tweeted on Sunday.

He would also emphasise the importance of "averting risks to regional peace & stability posed by India" and underscore the importance of peaceful resolution of Jammu and Kashmir, it said.

Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir has already angered India with his provocative comments on Kashmir and the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, prompting New Delhi to impose restrictions on the import of refined palm oil from Malaysia, the top supplier of the commodity to the country.

Khan's two-day working visit is set to further enhance and solidify long-standing brotherly relations between the two nations, Malaysia's official news agency Bernama reported on Monday.

Khan's second visit to Kuala Lumpur since becoming prime minister in August 2018 would include a high-level Pakistani delegation including Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi and other senior ministers.

The former cricketer-turned prime minister is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Mahathir in Putrajaya on Tuesday morning, the report said.

The two prime ministers also met on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly Session in New York in September last.

Khan is also scheduled to address scholars at the Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies (IAIS) on regional peace and security.

The two leaders share great camaraderie as both have similar views in many areas, such as on combatting corruption and issues concerning Muslim ummah like Islamophobia, Palestine and the Rohingya's plight, the report said, avoiding any mention of Kashmir.

Their meeting is expected to discuss on matters of mutual interest and a follow up on Mahathir's March 2019 official visit to Islamabad where both leaders had agreed to elevate Malaysia-Pakistan relations to a strategic partnership that will mark a new level of bilateral cooperation, it said.

The two countries are expected to step up cooperation in the trade of palm oil, agricultural products, retail, halal products, automotive parts, energy, science and technology, and telecommunication investment, the Bernama report said.

As the story from Sindh made front-page news, it started trending - hashtags like minorities in danger in Pakistan and wake up UNHCR started doing the rounds.

Many drew parallels with India. India has more Muslims than Pakistan, and yet they are technically a minority. Comparing India and Pakistan is a case of apples and oranges.

It's unfair and unnecessary. And it doesn't really cover India in glory. The situation in India is and should be better than Pakistan. India is a secular country. Measuring itself against Pakistan on any parameter, and coming out the winner, does little to burnish India's image.

But if a comparison must be made, this is what it looks like: The population of minorities in India has been steadily growing.

According to pew, the population of Muslims will grow from around 14 per cent to 18 per cent by 2050. Minorities in India enjoy the Rights to Practice their Religion.

Muslim lawmakers have representation in the Indian Parliament. When they don't agree with something, they protest, like people of any religion do.

Case in point - the anti-CAA protests. The Muslims of India are at the forefront of the protest, so are people from other religions.

Compare this with what happened in Pakistan when a Sikh tried to save his daughter from forced conversion. In response, angry Islamists shouted anti-Sikh slogans, pelted stones at a Gurudwara and threatened to destroy it.

It doesn't take much for the global community to realise that minorities are under threat in Pakistan.

Islamabad state intolerance towards minorities can be traced back to the Zia ul Haq era - the dictator legitimised the oppression of minorities by tweaking laws.

Consequently, the standing of minorities was reduced before the courts. Electoral laws were diluted, separate electorates for minorities were introduced - a system that was not abolished until 2002.

While the minorities were welcomed back into a joint electoral system, they still do not enjoy equal rights. Pakistani society still does not accept them as their own. Hardliners still dictate the rules and the silence of the state only enables their persecution.

So why have international watchdogs failed to call Pakistan out? Unfortunately, condemnations have been limited to diplomatic texts here.

The classic double standards and the West cutting Pakistan some slack each time in the hope that it won't be branded Islamophobic.

Pakistan has been a hub of religious persecution. The shocking incidents of young non-Muslim girls being made to convert to Islam have become a daily occurrence in Pakistan.

Every year, around 1,000 young Sindhi Hindu girls between the age of 12 and 28 are abducted, forcibly married and converted to Islam.

Every month between 40 to 60 Sindhi girls are converted.

According to Pakistan's own human rights commission from January 2004 to May 2018, there were 7,430 cases of such abductions of Sindhi girls in Pakistan.

The actual number is estimated to be much higher as most of the cases go unreported.
