It is often said that a picture is worth a thousand words. The adage is much more pronounced in the case of Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and General Qamar Javed Bajwa, Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, whose photo suggesting “not-so-friendly” ties was shared on Twitter.

In the photo shared on Wednesday, General Bajwa was seen seated on a chair next to the prime minister. While in earlier pictures, the all-powerful army chief found his place on sofas.

According to local media, Bajwa was at the Prime Minister’s House to discuss the security situation in the region.

During the meeting, professional matters pertaining to the Pakistan Army was discussed, the Prime Minister's Office said on its official Twitter account.

However, more than the meeting, it was the photo of Bajwa and Khan that drew the attention of many.

The twiterrati in Pakistan believe that there is symbolism in the picture and that it exhibits the current equation between the two.

It has been well established that the government runs on the mercy of the army and the ISI, Pakistan’s intelligence agency.

Several opposition parties have dubbed Khan as “puppet PM” and claim that the 2018 election, which saw Khan staking claim to power, was rigged by the Pakistani Army.

But of late, the relationship between Khan and General Bajwa seems to be going on a downward spiral.

The differences began over the appointment of Lt Gen Nadeem Ahmed Anjum as the new director-general of the ISI.

While Anjum, who is favoured by Bajwa, is scheduled to take over as DG (ISI) on November 20, Khan reportedly has been hoping to retain Lt Gen Faiz Hameed, the incumbent ISI chief.

There is also the case of extending Bajwa’s tenure, which is coming to an end on November 28, 2022.

Khan said that he enjoyed an “unprecedented relationship” with the military leadership but had not thought about extending the tenure of Bajwa, the Dawn newspaper reported.

Apart from that, there have been reports that the Army had been in touch with former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, who is presently in London and is facing a slew of charges on various corruption cases back home.

According to a CNN-News18 report, the Army had asked Sharif to come back and that his presence was needed in Pakistan politics.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) urged authorities on Tuesday to make public the whole report of the scrutiny committee set up to audit the ruling PTI's foreign finances.

The PTI received donations from foreign nationals and companies, under-reported funds, and disguised dozens of bank accounts, according to the report collected by the monitoring committee.

Later, it was discovered that the report omitted eight volumes of requisitioned documents and bank statements from the State Bank of Pakistan.

The committee withheld all the original 28 bank statements as well as year-by-year data of foreign money moved to the PTI's accounts between 2009 and 2013.

Earlier, the Pakistan Election Commission (ECP) had found that Prime Minister Imran Khan's party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI), had supplied incorrect information about funds received from abroad and, in fact, had disguised its genuine assets worth PKR 310 million.

According to the Singapore Post, the ECP review committee's conclusion came as a shock to the party and its leader at a time when the prime minister is isolated both nationally and internationally.

According to the ECP data, the PTI received PKR 1.64 billion in funding on January 5, 2022.In 2019, the ECP established a control committee to audit the PTI's foreign funding.

Peace with India and its immediate neighbours is set to be the central theme of Pakistan’s first-ever National Security Policy that is scheduled to be unveiled by Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday.

The 100-page policy document has also put out elaborate plans to open trade and business ties with India without final settlement of the Kashmir issue, Pakistan-based newspaper Express Tribune reported on Tuesday quoting an official.

“Only a part of the national security policy will be made public,” the official clarified, saying in the rest of the world such policies often remained classified.

The official stressed that normalising commercial relations is contingent upon achieving progress in talks between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.

“We are not seeking hostility with India for the next 100 years. The new policy seeks peace with immediate neighbours,” the official, who is associated with the development, was quoted as saying.

“Economic security will be the central theme of the new national security policy…. But geo-economics does not necessarily mean we overlook our geo-strategic and geo-political interests,” the official said.

The official further said that the Kashmir issue with India has been identified as a ‘vital national policy’ issue for Pakistan.

The official, however, clarified that there were no prospects of rapprochement with India under the current Modi-led government in New Delhi.

The country’s new National Security Policy would act as an umbrella document, to be used as a guideline for Pakistan`s foreign, international and defence related policies, he said.

Pakistan and India have mostly been at loggerheads with each other throughout history.

During the first term of Narendra Modi in 2014, the relations took a positive turn when he announced his intentions to have cordial relations with Pakistan.

He had also visited Islamabad in 2015 unannounced to attend a marriage ceremony in Sharif’s family.

However, the relations between the two countries turned south following the horrific 2016 Uri attacks in which four terrorists launched grenade attacks on Indian Army soldiers in the Indian's Jammu and Kashmir on 18 September.

The attack killed 19 soldiers and injured 19–30 others. It was reported as “the deadliest attack on security forces in Kashmir in two decades”.

Pakistan-based terrorist group Jaish-e-Mohammed was involved in the planning and execution of the attack.

In a significant development in Pakistan-Russia ties, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and Russian President Vladimir Putin are expected to meet on the sidelines of the Winter Olympics that will take place in Beijing next month.

The Olympics are a showstopper event for Chinese President Xi Jinping and will take place from February 4 to February 20.

Afghanistan has been one of the key areas of engagement between the two sides. Pakistan and Russia are part of the troika plus meet on Afghanistan, along with US and China.

Defence engagement has also increased, though unlikely to be a part when it comes to Russia-India. Pakistani and Russian military exercises Druzhba has been taking place regularly. Corruption and sex crimes are the two main evils confronting the Muslim world, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan said, calling on the need to “save the Muslim youth from being inundated with obscenity and pornographic material available on the internet”.

The prime minister made these comments during an interactive dialogue on ‘Riyasat-i-Madina: Islam, Society and Ethical Revival’ with top Muslim scholars from the world on Sunday, which was organised by the recently set up National Rehmatul-lil-Aalameen Authority (NRAA).

Khan in October formed the NRAA for researching how best to disseminate lessons from the life of the Prophet to the masses.

“There are two sorts of crimes in the society, one is corruption and the other is sex crime. Sex crime has risen sharply in our society, i.e. rape and child abuse and only one per cent of this is reported,” Khan said.

Meanwhile, delivering another address on Monday, Khan stressed the importance of making Pakistan economically strong and self-reliant and said that the nationalisation process adopted in the 1960s severely undermined the country’s progress.

He also claimed that its all-weather ally China was ready to help Pakistan and improve the latter’s economy.

“But our problem is that we are still not ready for it,” Khan added.

“By exporting only onion and vegetables, we cannot progress as industrial growth is must to improve the economy. Wealth creation of a country is impossible without industrial development while increasing exports supplement such efforts,” Khan said during an event of Pak-China Business Investment Forum in Islamabad.
