Pakistan's opposition Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, led by former cricket hero Imran Khan, swept to a comfortable by-election victory on the edge of the northwestern city of Peshawar, through its majority was trimmed by new hardline religious parties.

PTI candidate Arbab Amir Ayub clinched 45,631 votes, about 34.8 percent of the total, on Thursday to ensure PTI kept the parliamentary seat in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) that it governs.

The by-election was seen as a litmus test of PTI's popularity in KP, where it has focused on police, health and education reforms in contrast to the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party betting on road and energy infrastructure projects.

Khan, the PTI chairman, touted the victory as a direct vote of confidence in his party's performance governing KP since the 2013 election, when it won the National Assembly seat, known as Peshawar NA-4, with a majority of about 40 percent.

The next general election is due in mid-2018 but Khan has called for early polls after PML-N leader and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was toppled in July by a Supreme Court disqualification over an undeclared source of income.

Analysts say Khan's chances of becoming prime minister have been boosted by Sharif's ouster, and the sportsman has doubled down on his populist message by saying he will pull the country away from infrastructure spending towards improving schools, hospitals and the lives of the poor.

"Most of the youngsters like Imran Khan and believe he can steer the country out of crisis and stop corruption," said Zahid Hussain, a government contractor.

Awami National Party (ANP) candidate Khushdil Khan secured 24,830 votes, or 18.9 percent of the total, to pip PML-N's Nasir Khan Musazai, who won 23,169 votes to finish third.

Khushdil Khan's showing will hearten the ANP, whose candidates barely campaigned in 2013 as the Pakistani Taliban targeted and killed many of its leaders and activists in KP.

But it was the performance of two new hardline religious parties that caught the eye of political observers.

Muhammad Shafiq Ameeni, a candidate for the Tehreek-i-Labaik party, won 7.6 percent of the ballot campaigning on a platform of support for Pakistan’s strict blasphemy laws that are already some of the world's harshest.

Labaik supporters have spread their hardline message, including the notion that those who commit blasphemy against Islam should be killed, through mosques and seminaries.

Syed Moharram Shah, a Labaik activist, said the party was surprised it captured 9,060 votes because it wasn't fully prepared for the election.

"This is our first attempt but look at people's response. It's very much encouraging," he said.

Alhaj Liaqat Ali Khan, an independent candidate backed by the Milli Muslim League (MML) party, loyal to Hafiz Saeed, an Islamist under house arrest, obtained 3,557 votes.

Washington accuses Saeed of being the mastermind behind the 2008 attacks in the Indian city of Mumbai that killed 166 people, and has placed a $10 million bounty on his head. Saeed denies the charge.

Last month, candidates backed by Labaik and MML won about 11 percent of the ballot in a by-election for Sharif's vacated seat in a by-election in the eastern city of Lahore.

Pakistan Election Commission issues non-bailable arrest warrant against Imran Khan

The Pakistan Supreme Court said it still remains to be seen where the money for Imran Khan's London flat came from, the Pakistan's daily Dawn reported on Tuesday.

Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, who is heading a three-judge bench of the apex court, remarked after hearing the rebuttal presented by the counsel for PML-NN leader Hanif Abbasi saying, "We will have to see where the (money for the) London flat came from.''

The bench was hearing a petition filed by Abbasi seeking disqualification of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan and PTI secretary general Jahangir Khan Tareen over non-disclosure of assets, the existence of offshore companies owned by Imran and Tahreen.

Imran Khan is also accused of bringing foreign funds to Pakistan.

Abbasi's counsel Akram Sheikh on Tuesday brought into the question the validity of documents submitted by Imran's lawyer regarding the transfer of funds for the purchase of the Bani Gala property.

In the previous hearing, Imran's lawyer Naeem Bokhari on September 28 had sought to respond to the questions by Supreme Court regarding the money trail of the Bani Gala property.

Bokhari presented documents and a letter via email before the bench which was sent by Jemima, Imran Khan's former wife, verifying that the PTI chief had returned to her a sum of Rs 6.5 million that she had "gifted to him".

Later, Abbasi's lawyer alleged that documents were not verified as the addresses on it did not match.

"If the documents are not verified, what should we do?" the chief justice asked, inquiring if the court had the option of calling for the real documents, quoted DAWN.

Abbasi's counsel Sheikh also questioned the $104793.50 that he said was paid by Imran to the architect of the Bani Gala property saying, "Will they [the PTI] not tell us where this amount came from?".

He added that Imran's lawyer had not submitted documents regarding the matter.

In response to Sheikh's arguments, Justice Umar Atta Bnadial said, "You are assigning us the role of an accountant," and asked Sheikh to limit his argument, Dawn reported.

Sheikh told the court that Imran has had no source of income in Pakistan and that the PTI chief had accepted that his Niazi Services Limited had remained functional till 2013.

He also told the court that Imran had transferred a sum larger to Jemima, his ex-wife as loan he owed her.

Bokhari requested the court to grant time to track down the money trail of 100,000 pounds.

The three-member SC bench headed by Chief Justice Nasir has also asked Khan for the account details of Niazi Services Limited, Khan's offshore company, that was dissolved in 2015.

The court also demanded the money trail of 75,000 pounds that were remitted in 2000 from London to Pakistan, but Bokhari said that the bank records of the transfer were not available.

Imran Khan's failure to declare asset in London can have legal consequences: Pakistan Supreme Court

Imran Khan, who is accused of bringing foreign funds to Pakistan, has submitted a reply with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in a contempt of court case on Monday, reported Pakistan daily DAWN.

The election body will review the reply on September 27 and will give its judgment after that, said in its short order.

The ECP was hearing a contempt case against the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief filed by a party dissident and founding member, Akbar S Babar.

The DAWN cited the petition as claiming that Khan had used derogatory language in a reply to the commission in another case regarding party funding which was tantamount to contempt of court. After that, Saqlan Haider, Imran Khan's lawyer, had submitted an unconditional apology.

However, Khan said in a televised interview that he himself had not apologised and that his counsel has tendered an apology in his personal capacity. Seeing this, the ECP was once again moved to proceed against the PTI chief.

Imran Khan, in his written reply, has said that Saqlain Haider had submitted the apology on his behalf, and he has not objected to or opposed the apology. "My counsel appeared as pleader/advocate with full authority to act on my behalf to set at rest the liss/contempt proceeding," reads Khan's written reply. Khan argued that the matter should have been settled after the submission of apology.

Earlier this month, a bailable warrant was issued against the PTI chief when he reportedly failed to appear before the court. The ECP had directed Khan to submit his reply by September 25.

Khan has, however, said that he had not committed any wrongdoing or financial crime.

Imran Khan's counsel Babar Awan, who is representing him in the Election Commission, also submitted the order of Islamabad High Court suspending the arrest warrant. He further argued that the high court is going to hear a petition on the ECP's powers in connection with contempt of court hearings, DAWN reported.

In addition to this, the petitioner has filed yet another application earlier on Monday against Khan arguing that he has once again criticised the ECP, asking to launch another contempt of court proceeding against him. Regarding this, ECP has directed Imran Khan to submit a reply on September 27.

The PTI chief recently said that he will oppose Election Bill 2017 even if he gets disqualified under Article 62 and 63 of the Constitution.

Pakistan: Musharraf looks to contend next year's elections

Pakistan cricket legend Imran Khan angered fans Tuesday after a leaked video emerged of him describing international stars who agreed to play in the country despite security threats as "third-class" and anonymous.

The remarks by the 64-year-old who now leads a major political party were captured by a local journalist on a mobile phone and uploaded online, where it sparked a furious backlash including from many of his own supporters.

Khan, a vocal critic of the government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, had opposed staging Sunday's final of the Pakistan Super League in Lahore instead of the UAE where earlier matches were played, citing security grounds.

He later appeared to soften his position, using Twitter to congratulate the public on their participation and enthusiasm in a match widely hailed by observers for unifying the country, which has not hosted a major national team since 2009 when Islamist gunmen attacked a touring Sri Lanka side.

But speaking to party aides on Tuesday, he criticised the tournament and poked fun at the nine foreign players who agreed to play despite a recent resurgence in violence.

"I didn't even know the names of the 'phateechar' players," he said, using a derogatory term that roughly translates as "third-class", while others around him laughed.

"I think they grabbed some people from Africa and others from elsewhere to claim that they were foreign players," he added.

The video went viral online where many rushed to defend the foreign stars, particularly two-time World T20 winner Darren Sammy of the West Indies, who led Peshawar Zalmi to victory and whose dancing celebrations and effusive praise of Pakistan had made him a major hit with fans.

"These #Phateechar players have put in more effort in restoring the international cricket than the so called selfless leader," wrote Twitter user Rabiya Naveed.

Another user, @Dr_sheffield123, wrote "I am ur diehard fan but u made me upset like millions & am thinking whthr u r in ur senses or have lost ur mind?"

Some suggested Khan was motivated by petty jealousy because the government which he opposes had taken credit for the success of the match.

He later appeared on the local TV network Geo News, doubling down on his position.

"Sammy was captain but he is not a big player," he said.

"Had Chris Gayle come, had Kevin Pietersen come, I would have said they were big international stars."

Gayle featured for Karachi Kings in the matches held in Dubai and Sharjah but his team failed to qualify for the final.

Pietersen withdrew from the final over security fears along with other Quetta players Rilee Rossouw from South Africa, Luke Wright and Tymal Mills, who are both from England.

The row also reached parliament with defence minister Khawaja Asif condemning Khan on a point of order.

"I can't even repeat those derogatory remarks because they are so insulting to the players," he said.

Imran Khan angers fans by calling Darren Sammy 'third class'

Condemning the plight of Muslims being prevented from entering the United States under President Donald Trump's immigration ban, Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan has said that he wants the former to ban Pakistani visas also so that the administration can focus on fixing the country.

"I want to tell all Pakistanis today, I pray that Trump bans Pakistani visas so that we can focus on fixing our country," the Dawn quoted Khan as saying while addressing a rally in Sahiwal on Sunday.

Khan said he believes that things in Pakistan can only get better if the people work for progress. He said most educated Pakistanis want to leave this country as they consider they can only acquire gainful employment if they have a powerful source. Khan said all the best citizens of Pakistan will return and work for the betterment of this country the day merit system is brought back.

"We will have to fix Pakistan and stand on our own two feet. And the day that we decide this is our home and we have to fix it, we won't beg for loans from the US and the International Monetary Fund (IMF)," he said.

Trump's executive order, signed on Friday, temporarily banned refugees from around the world, blocked Syrian refugees indefinitely and halted entry for 90 days for the people from seven predominantly Muslim countries: Iraq, Syria, Iran, Yemen, Sudan, Libya and Somalia. According to a state department spokesman, the travellers who have dual nationality between a country on the list and another non-US country have also been barred from entering the US for 90 days.

The PTI chief said the government will fix this country the day it decides that it has to live and die in Pakistan.

"The biggest issue here is the corruption of bigwigs who... become ministers and loot this country, taking the money abroad," he said.

Khan lashed out at Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and alleged that he took money from Pakistan and spent it abroad.

The PTI chairman praised Iran's move to restrict the US nationals travelling to the country in response to Trump's immigration ban. He asserted that Pakistan needs to become an independent nation like Iran.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's conversation with US President-elect Donald Trump cannot "save him" from the Panama Papers scandal, cricketer-turned politician Imran Khan said today.

While it was good news that Trump spoke to Sharif, the chat will do no favour to the premier in the Panamagate case, the Tehreek-i-Insaf Chairman tweeted.

Khan was referring to Sharif's telephonic conversation with Trump yesterday, during which the Pakistani premier congratulated America's president-elect on his recent victory in the US polls.

Trump told Prime Minister Sharif that he has a "very good reputation".

In a taunting reference to a letter by Qatari prince Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al-Thani, Khan said Sharif could not be saved from the Panama Papers scandal "even if a Trump letter arrived", Dawn reported.

The Qatari prince's letter was submitted in the Supreme Court in connection with the Panamagate case.

In the letter, the Qatari royal had described his father's business ties with Sharif's family and his involvement in the London apartments that are at the centre of the Panama Papers controversy.

Khan on November 14 submitted the documents containing details of alleged bank accounts held by the Sharif family and loan write-off schemes.

The court on Tuesday agreed to Khan's request to set up a judicial commission to probe Khan's corruption allegations against Sharif, stemming from revelations that his children owned offshore companies in the tax haven of the British Virgin Islands.

Khan then backed down on his threat to paralyse Islamabad by bringing in a million protesters, defusing tensions after days of clashes between his supporters and the police.

Instead he decided to hold a "celebratory" rally on the edge of the capital, where he accused Sharif and his younger brother Shahbaz, the chief minister of Punjab province, of being responsible for the clashes between police and supporters of his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party.

"Hopefully within this month ... we will see the end of the dark night of the Sharifs," the former cricketer told tens of thousands of supporters.

"My anger is against these two cowards, these jackals of Pakistan, for making (Pakistanis) fight one another."

The Supreme Court is due to hold its first substantive hearing on the matter on Thursday.

Sharif's ruling party has said it will participate in an investigation into Panama Papers revelations but rejected an opposition demand that it should focus principally on Sharif's family. The Court has said it will set the terms of the commission itself if the parties cannot agree on them at once.

Khan's challenge stems from documents leaked from the Panama-based Mossack Fonseca law firm that appeared to show that Sharif's daughter and two sons owned offshore holding companies registered in the British Virgin Islands.

Sharif's family denies wrongdoing, and there was no mention of Sharif himself owning any offshore companies.

Holding offshore companies is not illegal in Pakistan, but Khan has implied that the money and London apartments held by the companies, amounting to millions of dollars, were gained by corrupt means.

Khan's threat of a "shutdown" protest had sparked fears of a repeat of demonstrations in 2014, where thousands of his supporters paralysed Islamabad's government quarter for several months over allegations of election rigging.

In a bid to foil the "shutdown", authorities arrested scores of PTI supporters and shut a major motorway leading from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Khan's political heartland.

The capital was calm on Wednesday, though there was still a heavy police presence.

Khan admitted in May that he himself had used an offshore company to legally avoid paying British tax on a London property sale.
