Prime Minister Imran Khan's ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party bagged two more Senate seats in the by-polls held in Punjab province Thursday, improving its tally in the upper house to 14.

Both seats had fallen vacant following the disqualification of two Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Senators - Haroon Akhtar and Sadia Abbasi by the Supreme Court for holding dual nationalities.

Abbasi is the wife of former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.

After losing two seats in the Senate, the strength of the PML-N led by deposed prime minister Nawaz Sharif has reduced to 17.

Poet of East Dr Muhammad Iqbal's grandson and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) nominee Waleed Iqbal won the Senate seat defeating PML-N's Saud Majeed with eight votes.

Waleed got 184 and Majeed 176 votes. PTI's Seemi Aizdi, sister of Prime Minister Khan's close friend Jahangir Khan Tareen, received 183 votes and defeated PML-N's former minister Saira Afzal Tarar.

The by-polls were held in the Punjab Assembly.

Of the total of 371 members, 360 cast their votes.

In the 104-member Senate, Independents are leading with 29 seats (of them most belonging to Balochistan and tribal areas), followed by Bilawal Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party with 20. The PML-N has 17, the PTI 14 and the MQM 5 seats.&nbsp;

Asserting that Islamabad's support to violence has not benefitted either Pakistan or Afghanistan, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has said that the "undeclared war" between the two neighbours must end.

Ghani said the spectre of violence needs to be removed and that Pakistan needs to support direct discussions between the Afghan government and the Taliban.

"The undeclared war between Afghanistan and Pakistan must end," he told a Washington audience through video conference from Kabul.

"We have not supported any movement against Pakistan from Afghanistan. The Afghan soil is not being used. We've exercised immense restraint and control because we seek a cooperative relationship," Ghani said in response to a question at the School of Advanced international Studies of the John Hopkins University on Monday.

Of the view that there is a need to define "what is a normal relationship" between Afghanistan and Pakistan, he said Kabul can offer a lot in the way of cooperation. "We are the key to Central Asia. How will Pakistan get to Central Asia without a stable Afghanistan?" he asked.

Ghani said Afghanistan and Pakistan need to together agree with the US and the rest of the world community on counter terrorism. These three sets of relationship, he said are the key.

"From the day that President Donald Trump announced the South Asia strategy, I extended the hand of friendship. We have engaged in several rounds of discussion," he said, adding that Afghanistan and the US have arrived at a document on what is their expectation, what needs to be done to translate commitments into reality and to help reduce the level of violence in moving forward to lasting peace.

Ghani said that he has not seen "urgency" from the new Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan regarding holding concrete dialogue with Afghanistan to fight terrorism or to assist in holding fruitful talks with the Taliban.

"We have not yet seen the sense of urgency. We hope that sense of urgency can be brought to the picture. We have a framework which is a Afghanistan-Pakistan agreement. The key is to move from talking to taking action," Ghani said.

"Our national interest is to keep engaging with Pakistan. We seek a stable Pakistan. We need to see substantive and measurable change. As of now that substantive and measurable change with the government of Prime Minister Imran Khan has not been seen. This is what needs to take place," said the Afghan president.

Ghani said that the Taliban is not in a winning position. "Let them disclose their casualties. Let them answer to the mothers who have lost their children. Let them answer to the wounded and let them answer to communities that because of their interference, have been deprived of education, of health, of services. Where is the positive model of the strength?" he said.

Debate on Asia Bibi postponed in EU parliament: Antonio Tajani informs PM Imran Khan

The IMF has expressed dissatisfaction at the current state of Pakistan's tax collection as the cash-strapped government sought a bailout package of up to $6 billion from the multilateral lender to overcome the economic challenges, media reports said Tuesday.

The cash-strapped Pakistani government led by Prime Minister Imran Khan is facing grave economic challenges as it struggles to keep the economy afloat.

Last month, Saudi Arabia said it would provide Pakistan with a USD 6 billion rescue package, but officials have said it is not enough, and Islamabad still plans to seek a bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Pakistan may ask the IMF for up to USD 6 billion, Geo News reported. If approved, it would be Pakistan's 13th rescue package from the multilateral lender since the late 1980s.

Pakistan formally approached the IMF in October for loans.&nbsp;

An IMF team is currently reviewing Pakistan's monetary and fiscal policies as well as its monetary needs in keeping with the current account deficit.

On Monday, the delegation, which has already concluded the technical discussions with the Pakistani representatives, commenced its policy-level talks with ministers and representatives of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).

Members of the team, led by Harald Finger, a senior economist and an adviser to the IMF, further stressed on effective measures required to increase the tax collection in order for Pakistan to deal with and recover from its financial crunch and current account deficit, Geo News reported.

According to the report, the IMF also indicated its support towards the FBR's move to send notices to thousands of tax defaulters.

There were two rounds of policy-level talks. Druing the first one, the IMF delegation met with Finance Minister Asad Umar and officials from the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), whereas in the second, it met with the FBR representatives.

The IMF delegation was briefed on the tax collection target for the ongoing fiscal year as well as the financial performance during the first four months, starting July 1, 2018 (FY18-19).

The IMF team said it was difficult to achieve the goal of curbing the financial crisis without increasing the tax collection, it quoted sources as saying. They also underscored the need to widen the tax scope.

The fund is reported to have raised questions over more than Rs 90 billion revenue shortfall in the first four months of the current fiscal year and wondered how the projected fiscal deficit target of 5.1 per cent could be achieved when development programme had already been curtailed to a bare minimum, Dawn newspaper reported.

The IMF is also dissatisfied over the performance of the power sector whose losses and recoveries are reported to have gone down rather than improving since the last IMF programme was completed in Sept 2016, leading to build up of circular debt beyond Rs 1.2 trillion and creating supply side constraints, it said.

Informed sources told the paper that the authorities briefed the IMF delegation about the subsidies envisaged in the 2018-19 budget and those committed by the Khan government since it came to power three months ago.&nbsp;

The discussions are set to continue till November 20, the report said. From November 7 ? when the IMF team arrived in Pakistan ? to November 9, technical talks were held, during which data pertaining to the performance of various sectors was presented.

The IMF team would also review the apex bank, SBP's financial independence and the FBR's performance, the report said.&nbsp;

IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde has said that Pakistan has requested financial assistance from the IMF to help address the country's economic challenges.

At the same time, she said the IMF would require "absolute transparency" of Pakistan's debts, including those owed to China, apparently referring to the USD 60 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects.&nbsp;

The CPEC is a network of infrastructure projects that are currently under construction throughout Pakistan that will connect China's Xinjiang province with Gwadar port in Pakistan's Balochistan province. It is the part of Chinese President Xi Jinping's ambitious Belt and Road Initiative.&nbsp;

The US has said that the huge Chinese debt was responsible for the economic challenges facing Pakistan, adding that it will review Islamabad's bailout plea to the IMF from all angles, including the country's debt position.

Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan cuts Diwali cake in Karachi; greets members of Hindu community

In a letter to Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan the Members of European Parliament have expressed concern over the threats to Asia Bibi (Aasiya Noreen), who was recently acquitted by Pakistan's Supreme Court in a Blasphemy Case.

The letter is signed by 197 EU politicians including from states that provide financial assistance to Pakistan. They have demanded safe passage for Asia Bibi as the Islamic fundamentalists have threatened to kill her.

Asia Bibi was convicted of Blasphemy eight years ago and sentenced to death by hanging. It was alleged that she made derogatory remarks about Islam after others objected to her drinking water from their glass because she was not a Muslim.

In a letter sent to Imran Khan, EU politicians said: "We celebrated the decision of the Supreme Court to acquit Asia Bibi and were pleased to see the government defend the judiciary in the days that followed. However, it has since been reported that because of the political deal struck with Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan, Asia Bibi is, once again, effectively on death row"."We are aware that a review of the Supreme Court verdict could take years, leaving Asia incarcerated for that time or vulnerable to mob violence if released", said the letter.

It further stated: "We understand that the decision to review the ruling was made for political, rather than legal, reasons. What happens next in this sad story will show the world whether Pakistan is a nation that respects the rule of law, or whether political interests will prevail."

''The Members of European Parliament said Pakistan must maintain the rule of law and such incidents will hugely impact the country economically."

Investors and businesses need confidence in justice for the sake of contracts, employees, and reputation. Likewise, other nations will be less likely to invest in Pakistan if the rule of law is undermined. Therefore, we urge in the strongest possible terms the Government of Pakistan to guarantee safe passage for Asiya, her family, and any of those under threat due to their part in the decision to acquit her, to any country that accepts them," the letter said.

EU politicians demand safe passage for Asia Bibi

An International Monetary Fund team arrived in Islamabad Wednesday for talks on a possible IMF bailout, even as Pakistan insisted it had solved its immediate balance of payments crisis.

Speaking shortly after Prime Minister Imran Khan returned from Beijing, Pakistan's finance minister said Tuesday that assurances from China -- combined with a pledge made by Saudi Arabia last month -- meant that Pakistan's immediate fiscal woes were "over".&nbsp;

"We had a gap of $12 billion and in that $12 billion, six billion came from Saudi Arabia and the rest came from China," Asad Umar told reporters, without specifying the nature of the Chinese assistance.

The finance secretary and the governor of the state bank will attend a meeting in Beijing on Friday to finalise the terms of the assistance, he added.

Pakistan secured $6 billion in funding from Saudi Arabia and struck a 12-month deal for a balance of payments lifeline during Khan's visit in October.

Despite the pledges, the ministry of finance said the Pakistan would still seek broader IMF support for the government's long term economic planning.

Since taking power in August, former cricketer Khan has been searching for ways to rally a struggling economy hit by inflation and shore up the country's dwindling foreign currency reserves.&nbsp;

As well as a highly-publicised austerity drive, including auctioning off government-owned luxury automobiles and buffaloes, the new prime minister has also made overtures to the IMF -- which has bailed Pakistan out repeatedly since the 1980s.

However, Islamabad received billions of dollars in Chinese loans to finance ambitious infrastructure projects, and the US -- one of the IMF's biggest donors -- has raised fears that Pakistan could use any bailout money to repay its debts to Beijing.

Islamabad -- which last received an IMF bailout in 2013 to the tune of $6.6 billion -- has refuted these claims.&nbsp;

Pakistan: Imran Khan asks Punjab government to prepare compensation package for victims of recent protests

The Pakistani finance minister's bullish comments declaring the end of an economic crisis have bolstered confidence ahead of crunch talks with the International Monetary Fund on Wednesday, but the country is still likely to need a bailout.

Finance Minister Asad Umar said on Tuesday that "Pakistan's immediate balance of payment crisis is over" without mentioning the talks with the IMF in Islamabad.

Umar's comments came after Prime Minister Imran Khan visited main allies Saudi Arabia and China last month.

Khan secured $6 billion in assistance from Riyadh while Beijing promised help cover a projected $12 billion shortfall in foreign exchange to service Pakistan's debt.

Pakistan's central bank chief is due to travel to China on Friday to discuss details of what Umar described as a pledge of "immediate money".

Analysts say the cash will give the economy breathing space and stabilise the rupee, which has fallen 25 per cent against the US&nbsp;dollar since December, but it will not solve Pakistan's balance of payments crisis and avert a second IMF bailout request since 2013, and its 13th IMF rescue since late the 1980s.

"They are going to the IMF because they have to get credit rating approval from the financial markets and that would not happen on the Saudi or Chinese money," Asad Sayeed, an economist at the Collective for Social Science Research, told Reuters.

Pakistani officials are concerned tough IMF conditions would hit growth in the short term, as the IMF is likely to push for reduced spending, further currency devaluations and an increase in interest rates, preventing Khan from fulfilling populist campaign pledges.

Khan's government has pledged to create an "Islamic welfare state" and help build 5 million homes for the poor in a nation where the illiteracy rate is more than 40 per cent.

Confidence boost

But the Saudi and Chinese help could put the government in a stronger position to negotiate better terms with the IMF, Saad Hashemy, chief economist for local brokerage Topline Securities, told Reuters.

"The statement by the finance minister is a big confidence booster for the economy," Hashemy said.

"What it falls short of is the exact details of the funding from the Chinese side," he added, speculating China may opt to defer payments on existing loans and buy more Pakistani imports.

Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told a daily news briefing Beijing was "willing, in accordance with Pakistan's needs and with agreement by both sides, to provide what help we can for Pakistan's economic and social development".

Pakistani shares soared more than 3 per cent on the news of the Saudi loans, and were up another 1.5 per cent on Wednesday following Umar's comments.

Umar has said the country needs $12 billion for immediate economic relief, but Hashemy said a total figure of up to $16 billion was needed to build up reserves, and negotiating a package with the IMF was the "smart thing".

Pakistan's current account deficit widened 43 per cent to $18 billion in the fiscal year that ended in June, while the fiscal deficit has ballooned to 6.6 per cent of gross domestic product, problems analysts say will not go away following the latest injection of economic assistance.

"There are very deep-seated structural problems," Sayeed warned.

"If you just sit back ... and carry on as you always do, that's not good because you're going to land up precisely in a similar situation in a few years."

Pakistan gets a boost of confidence but IMF bailout still on cards

State-run Pakistan TV has apologisied for saying Imran Khan was "begging" in China.&nbsp;

The Pakistani prime minister had been in China on a three-day visit. Khan had also been hoping for a bailout. Pakistan is currently undergoing a balance of payments crisis and China is one of Pakistan's staunchest allies.&nbsp;

On Sunday, Imran had been giving a speech at the Central Party School in Beijing. The speech was shown live on PTV (Pakistan Television Corporation).&nbsp;

Somebody however made a blooper and instead of writing "Beijing" — which is where Imran was — on the screen, that somebody wrote "Begging" (see pic below).&nbsp;

The blooper stayed on, on the top left-hand side of the PTV screen, for about 20 seconds, which was more than enough for social media to pick it up. &nbsp;

PTV apologises for saying Imran Khan was 'begging' in China

Pakistan's finance minister said on Tuesday his country's balance of payments crisis was over, a day before a team from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is due to arrive to discuss a potential aid package.

Asad Umar said a combined $6 billion of Saudi money and promised funds from China would cover a projected $12 billion shortfall in foreign currency to service Pakistan's debt.

"So, Pakistan’s immediate balance of payment crises is over. That I can tell you categorically that now we don’t have anymore a balance of payment crises," he told a news briefing, without mentioning the IMF.

The discussion on Pakistan's multibillion-dollar bailout application would begin on Wednesday, PTI had reported.&nbsp;

Last month, Pakistan Finance Minister Asad Umar had made a formal request for financial assistance from the IMF.

"We expect those discussions to begin on November the 7th. An IMF staff mission will go to Islamabad and initiate discussions with the authorities," IMF Director of Communications Gerry Rice was quoted as saying by PTI.

"The objectives of that program is to help stabilise the Pakistan economy, put in place the preconditions for sustained inclusive growth," Rice said, adding that the modalities of that would be announced once the IMF and Pakistan have reached a staff-level agreement.

Once it is reached, Rice elaborated that they would go forward to IMF Board for the formal approval of the program.

Breaking News: Pakistan PM summons National Security Council meet

Twitter on Sunday suspended the account of Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) chief Khadim Rizvi, following a request by the Imran Khan-led government to take action against his tweets inciting violence during the protests against the verdict of Asiya Bibi case.

On visiting his handle, a notification appears on the screen which reads - "Account Suspended".

The step was taken after Rizvi and his TLP supporters had urged people to resort to violence in the aftermath of the verdict last week. The TLP chief also criticised several state institutions by writing inflammatory statements as claimed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government, The Express Tribune reported.

Earlier, Pakistan's Information and Broadcasting Minister Fawad Chaudhry had said that the social networking giant turned down the PTI government's request to pull down Rizvi's account.

On Saturday, Rizvi and senior TLP leader Afzal Qadri were among the 500 people booked for rioting and disrupting normal life in various parts of Lahore. Two cases were also booked against protestors in the nation's capital Islamabad on charges of vandalising public property.

On October 31, mass protests began after the Pakistan Supreme Court announced its verdict acquitting Asiya, a Christian woman in a blasphemy case. The demonstrations, led by TLP and other religious parties, blocked roads and vandalised public property in various parts of the country.

A three-judge special bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Saqib Nisar, Justice Asif Saeed Khosa and Justice Mazhar Alam Khan Miankhel heard Asiya's 2014 appeal against her conviction and death sentence and overturned the ruling in favour of her.

Even after rejecting reports of putting Asiya on the Exit Control List (ECL), the PTI government succumbed to pressure and reached an agreement with the TLP for taking legal actions to not allow Asiya and her family to leave the country.

Asiya was convicted and sentenced to death in 2010 for allegedly insulting Islam during an argument with three Muslim women.

Last week, we saw Pakistan reaching out to every conceivable friend for bailout assistance. The government was also unable to control radical elements that overpowered its decisions and judiciary in Asia Bibi&nbsp;case.

Pakistan's foreign reserves have plunged 42 per cent since the start of the year and now stand at about $8 billion. As per the State Bank of Pakistan report, the total debt of Pakistan in 2018 stands at 78.4 per cent of its GDP.&nbsp;

What Imran Khan has got from Saudi Arabia is meagre $3 billion support for a year and a further loan worth up to $3 billion in deferred payments for oil imports. He must have gone to China mentally prepared to mortgage anything to get a similar bailout package. Meanwhile, China said more talks are needed to finalise economic aid to Pakistan.

Chinese concerns over bailing out Pakistan&nbsp;

China knows that despite its help Pakistan will have to go to IMF for another bailout. &nbsp;China may not be comfortable with the kind of transparency being demanded by them including the details of debt to China. It may also not be keen to be pulled into the middle-east cauldron, the rivalry between Saudi Arabia and Iran or Shia-Sunni divide.&nbsp;

China itself is struggling with the Trade War and poor returns on investment in BRI. Since the launch of the CPEC in 2015, power generation and infrastructure projects in Pakistan worth $28 billion have either been completed or proceeded to advanced stages of construction.&nbsp;

China will seek the assurance of Imran Khan about the smooth development of the project, because he has slashed $12 billion reducing CPEC to be worth $50 billion projects from planned $62 billion, and ordered an audit of the same.&nbsp;

Despite Imran’s anxiety and optics of wiping out corruption, Chinese will like to wait for any big ticket announcement till they are sure about the security of their project, 30,000 workers, security personals, and future of his association with Pakistani Army, ISI, and militant groups. &nbsp;

It can also be argued that to avoid IMF scrutiny China may be little more liberal with debt aid package to keep Pakistan afloat minus IMF loan, if possible. There can also be some quid pro quo in keeping the US out of this strategic space, some land grab (With earlier precedence of ceding Saksham Valley to China) or mortgaging some other sovereign rights. &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Internal chaos due to Islamic radicalisation&nbsp;

The way the Supreme Court decision to acquit Christian woman Asia Bibi in a blasphemy case triggered mass protests by radicalised elements. Militant groups like Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) and others including Hafiz Saeed outfits, outrightly challenging the government machinery, Supreme Court and Law and Order machinery, despite a warning personally by Imran Khan, indicates mass radicalisation.

Radical elements forced the government to an extent that it is likely to put her on Exit Control List (ECL). The militant groups like Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) and Falah-E Insaniat (FIF) have been taken off from the list of banned outfits.&nbsp;

The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) that visited Pakistan last month, has also expressed dissatisfaction over any worthwhile control over terror funding. The support of Pakistan Army and ISI in developing terror support infrastructure to pursue a proxy war against India and Afghanistan is unlikely to be weakened due to their flawed narrative of ‘India Threat Theory’ to legitimize holding strings of power in their hand.

The fact that there has been an&nbsp;increase in defence expenditure and Pakistan aspires to be the fourth largest nuclear power in the world, clearly indicates that its military will not allow the government to muddle with its plans.

The Asia Bibi case gives an impression that Pakistan is in the dangerous path of Islamic radicalisation, which can lead itself into a semi-caliphate if radicalisation&nbsp;in Pakistani Army increases, but there is a catch.&nbsp;

An unstable Pakistan is not in global interest, nor in the interest of China as well as India, because it will take no time in getting converted into the largest jihadist caliphate.

It is the biggest harbour of terrorists in the world and does not seem to be inclined to any change in the status quo. It has been kept financially afloat in past by the United States, because of the reasons mentioned above and its strategic location, which was crucial to them at that point of time. Now for similar reasons and getting warm water access to its western region, China may have every reason to keep it financially afloat. &nbsp;

Pakistan’s other friends may also help directly or indirectly to pursue their own specific agendas. It may not be an exaggeration to say that it may lead Pakistan to be a future Chinese colony. For the time being China and other interested parties will not let Pakistan sink.&nbsp;

Where is debt-ridden Pakistan heading?

As Imran Khan ends his<a href="http://www.wionews.com/south-asia/imran-khan-arrives-in-china-to-seek-help-for-pakistans-shrinking-economy-174997"> three-day visit</a> to all-weather ally China, the Pakistan Prime Minister's tour did not pan out the way he expected.&nbsp;

After he won a US $6 billion loan from Saudi Arabia, Khan was hoping for a similar response - but that has not happened.&nbsp;

Beijing remained silent about Islamabad's need for immediate financial support. But, talks over issues involving India were thoroughly discussed.&nbsp;

A joint statement, issued hereafter Prime Minister Imran Khan's talks with Chinese President and Premier Li Keqiang, said that China backed Pakistan's efforts to improve ties with India to settle "outstanding disputes", without directly mentioning the Kashmir issue.

"China appreciates Pakistan's quest for peace through dialogue, cooperation and negotiation, on the basis of mutual respect and equality, and supports Pakistan's efforts for improvement of Pakistan-India relations and for settlement of outstanding disputes between the two countries," the joint statement said.

Over Islamabad issue, Khan said that he expected Chinese support to build exchange reserves and avoid a possible bailout from IMF.&nbsp;

Pakistan is drowning under the weight of his debt with foreign exchange reserves down to US $8 billion - barely enough to cover two months of exports.&nbsp;

While a bailout from the international monetary fund seems inevitable, Pakistan is having second thoughts about it.

The IMF bailout will come with tough conditions -- IMF would examine with a forensic microscope Pakistan's various agreements on the China-Pakistan economic corridor or CPEC.

All weather friends, <a href="http://www.wionews.com/south-asia/willing-to-work-with-pm-to-build-new-era-of-china-pakistan-destiny-xi-jinping-to-imran-khan-175091">China and Pakistan</a> also agreed to enhance their defence cooperation. China is the main supplier of defence equipment for Pakistan.

They agreed to further enhance defence cooperation, maintain high-level visits and exchanges at various levels between relevant departments of the two armed forces, the joint statement said.

Both sides have agreed to make full use of the China-Pakistan Defence and Security Consultation mechanism, deepen cooperation in areas such as military exercises, training cooperation, personnel exchanges, and equipment and technology cooperation, it said.

Pakistan PM Imran Khan does not get bailout from China

A key Pakistani cleric with close ties to the Afghan Taliban who was killed in the garrison city of Rawalpindi was buried Saturday as Prime Minister Imran Khan called for an investigation into the murder.

Maulana Sami Ul-Haq, dubbed the "Father of the Taliban", was stabbed to death by unknown intruders at his residence Friday night.

The cleric, who is in his 80s&nbsp; was buried in his hometown Akoda Khattak, around 115 kilometres (70 miles) northwest of Islamabad.

Thousands of people gathered for the funeral prayers guarded by dozens of police personnel while a bomb disposal squad cleared the graveyard before the cleric's body was brought for burial, an AFP reporter at the site said.

His seminary had produced some of the key leaders of the Afghan and Pakistani Taliban, something that the cleric and his associates would proudly tell visiting journalists.

The list of graduates written on the walls of the seminary includes the names of leaders of the Pakistani Taliban.

An investigation into the murder of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto in 2007 revealed that the assassins had stayed at his seminary before travelling to Rawalpindi where Bhutto was killed.

The Afghan Taliban issued a statement terming his death "a great loss for the entire Islamic Ummah" (nation).

"He rendered unforgettable services and assistance to the oppressed Afghan nation against the Soviet and American invasions," the statement said.

Afghan envoys in Pakistan had reached out to him seeking his help in starting negotiations with the Afghan Taliban.

But analysts doubted if he had any sway with them.

"He did not had any influence on the Afghan Taliban but he supported their cause," analyst Rahimullah Yusufzai told AFP.

"Many of the leaders and fighters of the Afghan Taliban had studied at his madrassa," he said.

Pakistani media termed his death a blow to the Afghan peace process but Yusufzai doubted it, saying his death would have no impact on the talks as he was never part of any negotiations.

Social media users in Afghanistan termed him a "troublemaker".

"The Taliban have lost their father, now they are orphan," Bilal Noori, an Afghan, posted on Facebook.

His death was widely condemned in Pakistan by politicians and religious leaders, with the prime minister calling for an investigation into the murder.

In 2014, the cleric was a member of the negotiating committee from the homegrown Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) -- who brokered a ceasefire with the government, although the talks later failed.

He twice held roles as a member of Pakistan's Senate.

Pakistan buries 'Father of Taliban' as PM orders probe of killing

China will provide the "necessary support" to Pakistan to tide over the present financial crisis, a top official here said Saturday as the two countries signed 16 agreements after Prime Minister Imran Khan held talks with his Chinese counterpart Li Keqiang to boost their "all-weather" strategic ties.

Khan is here on his maiden visit to China as the two countries grapple to iron out differences over the multi-billion-dollar CPEC and Islamabad approaching 'friendly nations' to avoid a tough IMF bailout package.

Welcoming Khan, Li said: "you can say that China and Pakistan are all-weather partners.

"We have a high-level of political trust and close cooperation in all fields. Pakistan has always been regarded as a foreign policy priority by China. Your visit will further consolidate and develop the firm, enduring ties between our two countries".

Thanking Li, Khan said: "the relationship between the two countries has deepened since then because the CPEC in 2013 was just an idea. Now it is on the ground. And it has caught the imagination of the people of Pakistan".

Pakistan sees China as a great opportunity to progress, attract investment, he said.

"It gives us an opportunity to raise our standard of living, growth rate. You will see the difference because a lot has happened since 2013. One of the things of course is my party has come into power," Khan said.

After talks between Khan and Li, officials of both the sides signed 16 agreement in the presence of the leaders.

China will provide "necessary support" to Pakistan to tide over the present financial crisis but declined to reveal the amount, Vice Foreign Minister Kong Xuanyou told media after the talks.

Khan met Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday following which Pakistan media reports said Beijing has agreed to provide US $6 billion in aid to the cash-strapped country which included a loan of US $1.5 billion along with an additional package of US $3 billion for the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Asked about the US $6 billion package, Kong said: "during the visit, the two sides made it clear in principle that Chinese government will provide necessary support for Pakistan to tide over the current difficulties.

"As for the specific measures to be taken, the competent authorities will have detailed discussion".

He also said there will be no changes in the US $60 billion CPEC projects which came under criticism including by some of the Khan's Cabinet ministers over the increasing debt.

Pakistan is currently battling serious economic crisis including balance of payments.

To a question whether there will be changes in the CPEC projects, Kong said: "there has been no change in the number of CPEC projects. If there is going to be any, it will be increased going forward".

He also said more projects relating to "industrial cooperation" will come up in more areas of Pakistan.

"The dimension of the industrial cooperation will be introduced into the CPEC going forward.

"The CPEC will be introduced to more areas of Pakistan and we are also in favour of areas relating to people's lives and hence going forward both the areas and the contents of the CPEC will be enriched," Kong said.

Asked about the cooperation on counter-terrorism, Kong said: "all areas of cooperation have been covered and we also expressed positive wish for strengthening cooperation".

China has been pressing Pakistan to crackdown on Uygur militants of the East Turkistan Islamic Movement (ETIM) in Xinjiang region from crossing in and out of the province.

China vows 'necessary support' to cash-strapped Pak as both countries ink 16 pacts

&nbsp;China will provide Pakistan with economic aid but more talks will take place to fix the details, a senior Chinese diplomat said, after new Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan met Chinese Premier Li Keqiang on Saturday.

Pakistan's foreign reserves have plunged 42 per cent since the start of the year and now stand at about $8 billion, or less than two months of import cover.

Last month, Pakistan received a US $6 billion rescue package from Saudi Arabia, but officials say it is not enough and the country still plans to seek a bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to avert a balance of payments crisis.

It would be Pakistan's 13th rescue package from the multilateral lender since the late 1980s.

Speaking to reporters in Beijing's Great Hall of the People following Khan's talks with Li, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Kong Xuanyou said his country would help.

"During the visit the two sides have made it clear in principle that the Chinese government will provide necessary support and assistance to Pakistan in tiding over the current economic difficulties," Kong said.

"As for specific measures to be taken, the relevant authorities of the two sides will have detailed discussions," he added, without giving details.

Khan told Chinese President Xi Jinping the previous day that he had inherited "a very difficult economic situation" at home.

Though China is Pakistan's closest ally, Khan's newly elected government has sought to re-think the two countries' signature project, the $60 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which Beijing touts as the flagship infrastructure programme in its vast Belt and Road Initiative.

Pakistan has looked to amend CPEC to put greater emphasis on projects that focus on social development, rather than purely on infrastructure.

Kong said there would be no change in the number of projects under CPEC.

"There is no change at all. If there were, it would only be to increase, not decrease" the number of projects, he added.

However the scope of the project would increase and will tilt in favour of people's livelihoods, Kong said, also without elaborating.

After visiting Beijing, Khan is set to be a key note speaker at a major import fair in Shanghai, an event that China hopes will show the world the country welcomes foreign companies and their products.

China says more talks needed on economic aid for Pakistan

A key Pakistani cleric with close ties to the Afghan Taliban who was killed in the garrison city of Rawalpindi was buried Saturday as Prime Minister Imran Khan called for an investigation into the murder.

Maulana Sami Ul-Haq dubbed the "Father of the Taliban", was stabbed to death by unknown intruders at his residence Friday night.

The cleric, who is in his 80s &nbsp;was buried in his hometown Akoda Khattak, around 115 kilometres (70 miles) northwest of Islamabad.

His JUI-S party was an ally of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party headed by Prime Minister Khan.

Imran Khan arrives in China seeking help to save Pakistan's shrinking economy

Imran Khan meets Chinese President Xi Jinping

Pakistan Government wants $3 Billion for CPEC

Pakistan is unravelling. Protests have erupted like a rash. Hardliners are baying for blood. Their target is a Christian woman. Asia Bibi spent nine years in jail, on death row over a cup of water. She was charged under the draconian blasphemy law. The Supreme Court has commuted the death sentence. But the darbar-e-awaam won't let her live. They want her hanged.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
And they're gunning for everyone in the way.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
The Tehreek e Labaik is openly asking soldiers to revolt, calling into question the suitability of an Ahmadi like Gen Bajwa to head the Pakistani armed forces. They've threatened the Supreme Court judges, forcing them to justify their order. They're mighty upset with Prime Minister Imran Khan who warned them against protesting and promptly flew to Beijing.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
None of this is very surprising, given that it's happening in Pakistan. What's surprising is the certificate of merit being handed out to those in the line of fire. The judiciary has been commended as "bold". The Prime Minister is being congratulated for "displaying political courage." It's the same judiciary that has been dragging its feet on every terror case including 26/11. This is the same Imran Khan who orchestrated crippling protests against Nawaz Sharif. The same man who repeatedly and publicly endorsed the blasphemy law to pander to a section of the electorate. Today he's become the shining beacon of political uprightness. As for the army, the chickens have come home to roost. The fundamentalists they gave teeth to, are now biting them. &nbsp;
&nbsp;
The public challenge being issued by the protestors is limiting the maneuverability of those being challenged. They have no choice but to respond with tough words. Tough action may follow, if they have any spine left. But these won't be guided by goodness. The army, the courts and the government in Pakistan are making a virtue out of necessity.
&nbsp;
Asia Bibi doesn't deserve this persecution. Just as those being projected as her "protectors" don't deserve any praise. By doing away with her death sentence, they're buying a new lease of life for themselves. &nbsp;

Why Asia Bibi's 'protectors' deserve no praise

Pakistan's Prime Minister Imran Khan, who is currently on a <a href="http://www.wionews.com/south-asia/imran-khan-arrives-in-china-to-seek-help-for-pakistans-shrinking-economy-174997">five-day official visit to China</a>, met with Chinese President Xi Jinping earlier in the day and discussed his country's "very difficult" economic situation, news agency Reuters reported.&nbsp;

Khan's China&nbsp;visit is aimed at working out a bailout package for Pakistan's economy which is nearing a collapse. This would be Pakistan's 13th rescue package from the multilateral lender since the late 1980s.

During his meeting at Beijing's Great Hall of the People earlier in the day, Khan said that his party came to power during a "very difficult economic situation". He added that he had come to China to learn.&nbsp;

"Countries go in cycles. They have their high points, they have their low points. Unfortunately, our country is going through a low point at the moment with two very big deficits, a fiscal deficit and a current account deficit. And so we, as I’ve said, have come to learn," Khan stated.

Xi hailed China's relationship with Pakistan reaffirming they were "all-weather" friends.

"I attach great importance to China-Pakistan relations and am willing to work together with the prime minister to strengthen the China-Pakistan all-weather strategic partnership and build a new era of China-Pakistan destiny," Xi said.

Khan, who is accompanied by Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, will meet Chinese Premier Li Keqiang on Saturday. Both the countries are expected to sign a series of agreements tomorrow.

According to reports, Pakistan's foreign reserves have plunged 42 per cent since the start of the year at around $8 billion at present.

The country received a $6 billion rescue package from Saudi Arabia last month, which the officials claimed was not enough adding that the country still plans to seek a bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to avert a balance of payments crisis.

Khan's China visit comes at the time when Pakistan grapples with unrest and protests over the acquittal of a Pakistani Christian woman on death row for blasphemy.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the International Monetary Fund on Friday announced that the <a href="http://www.wionews.com/south-asia/discussion-on-pak-bailout-application-to-begin-on-wednesday-imf-175007">discussion on Pakistan's multibillion-dollar bailout application would begin next Wednesday</a>, news agency PTI reported.

"We expect those discussions to begin on November 7. An IMF staff mission will go to Islamabad and initiate discussions with the authorities," IMF Director of Communications Gerry Rice told reporters.

"The objectives of that program is to help stabilise the Pakistan economy, put in place the preconditions for sustained inclusive growth," Rice said, adding that the modalities of that would be announced once the IMF and Pakistan have reached a staff-level agreement.

Pakistan Finance Minister Asad Umar had made a formal request for financial assistance from the IMF last month.

Willing to work together to build new era of China-Pakistan destiny: Xi Jinping to Imran Khan

Talking tough, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan Wednesday told hardliners not to "confront the State" and <a href="http://www.wionews.com/south-asia/pakistani-islamist-party-calls-for-death-of-judges-who-freed-christian-woman-sentenced-for-blasphemy-174627">refrain from vandalism</a> after the Supreme Court <a href="http://www.wionews.com/south-asia/pakistan-supreme-court-acquits-asia-bibi-of-blasphemy-charges-174536">acquitted a Christian woman sentenced to death</a> for committing blasphemy.

Prime Minister Khan addressed the nation through a video message and his address was solely focused on the<a href="http://www.wionews.com/south-asia/asia-bibi-the-first-pakistani-woman-to-be-sentenced-to-death-for-blasphemy-174587"> Asia Bibi</a> verdict.

Bibi, a 47-year-old mother of four, who was on a death row for eight years for blasphemy, was acquitted by the apex court in a landmark verdict which evoked protests, death threats from hardline groups and cheers from human rights advocates.

<a href="http://www.wionews.com/south-asia/how-asia-bibi-was-convicted-in-blasphemey-case-a-timeline-174662">Timeline: How was Asia Bibi convicted in Blasphemy case</a>

"I ask these elements (protesters) to avoid confronting the State. But if they opted to do so, the State will fulfill its responsibilities," Khan said.

"We will protect life and property of people...We will not let them (protesters) involve in vandalism or close down the roads," he said, referring to protesters blocking a highway linking the capital Islamabad with garrison city of Rawalpindi.

Many parts of Karachi were paralysed due to the protests and most of the main roads were shut down by the protesters who are burning tyres and pelting stones at vehicles.

Khan appealed to the public to remain calm and refrain from joining those trying to create law and order problem in the name of Islam.

The Prime Minister said that he was forced to give the address after the reaction by protesters against the verdict and the kind of language they were using against State institutions.

Khan also flayed a video clip of a leader of protesters on social media in which he said that the judges who gave the verdict were liable to murder.

"How a State can function in such circumstances...Those involved in this are not doing any service to Islam. They are in fact enemies of Islam," Khan said.
Referring to the protesters who have disrupted routine life across the country, he said: "If the Supreme Court does not issue a verdict according to their wishes, will they come out on the roads?"

The Prime Minister also said Pakistan was created in the name of Islam and no law can be made against the teachings of Islam.

He said the verdict was issued in the light of the Constitution of the country which is also based on Islam.

He said the government was working hard to improve the economy and the protesters were creating hurdles to get political mileage out of the verdict.

"We are already facing such tough economic hurdles. We have yet to take a day off... We are struggling continuously to uplift the people [and] to improve the conditions of the underprivileged," he said.

"The people are to bear the brunt of this. The labours who are reliant on daily wages... How will they survive?" he asked.

Bibi was accused of committing blasphemy in 2009.

She was convicted by the trial court in 2010 after being accused of insulting Islam in a row with her neighbours. Her death sentence was maintained by the Lahore High Court in 2014.

She always maintained her innocence, but has spent most of the past eight years in solitary confinement.

She appealed against the conviction in the Supreme Court, which for the first time heard the case in July 2015.

Talking tough, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan Wednesday told hardliners not to "confront the State" and refrain from vandalism after the Supreme Court acquitted a Christian woman sentenced to death for committing blasphemy. Prime Minister Khan addressed the nation through a video message and his address was solely focused on the Asia Bibi verdict. Bibi, a 47-year-old mother of four, who was on a death row for eight years for blasphemy, was acquitted by the apex court in a landmark verdict which evoked protests, death threats from hardline groups and cheers from human rights advocates. Timeline: How was Asia Bibi convicted in Blasphemy case "I ask these elements (protesters) to avoid confronting the State. Referring to the protesters who have disrupted routine life across the country, he said: "If the Supreme Court does not issue a verdict according to their wishes, will they come out on the roads?" Also read: Asia Bibi is free, but minorities live in fear in Pakistan The Prime Minister also said Pakistan was created in the name of Islam and no law can be made against the teachings of Islam. Bibi was the first woman who was given death sentence under the blasphemy laws. According to officials, Bibi might be flown out of Pakistan due to the threat to her life. It is not clear where she will go as several countries, including Canada, have offered asylum to her.

Don't confront the State: Imran Khan warns Bibi verdict protesters

India great Farokh Engineer has called on former Pakistan captain turned Prime Minister Imran Khan to use his political clout to help restore Test match links between the border rivals.

Despite wild enthusiasm about cricket in both nations, the two have not met in a five-day Test match since they played out a draw in Bangalore in 2007.

Bilateral cricket ties between India and Pakistan have been frozen amid political tensions and they only play each other in multi-nation events such as the World Cup.

Imran Khan, one of the outstanding all-round cricketers of his generation, became Prime Minister earlier this year and Engineer believes he now has the authority to break the impasse.&nbsp;

"Imran Khan, he is the prime minister now. Hopefully, India and Pakistan will start a dialogue," Engineer, a brilliant wicket-keeper, told the inaugural Ranji Memorial Public Conversation on Cricket in London this week.

"They should be playing Test cricket against each other because it will do Pakistan cricket, their economy, a world of good. But you hear about border skirmishes and this and that. They've got to have dialogue."

"Unfortunately, the Indian government controls the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) or they (the BCCI) have been using that as an excuse. As a cricketer, I would love India to play Pakistan or vice versa. But it is a question of convincing the political leaders."

"Basically we are the same people. Both countries have extremely talented cricketers and I, for one, would love to see that happen but unfortunately, the brakes are on," Engineer lamented.

Pakistan's position has been complicated by the fact that since a 2009 attack by armed militants on the Sri Lanka team bus in Lahore, most major cricket nations have refused to tour on security grounds, with Pakistan forced to play the bulk of their 'home' matches in the United Arab Emirates.

Farokh Engineer appeals to Imran Khan to restore India-Pakistan Test ties

Islamist hardliners incensed by the acquittal of a Christian woman for blasphemy vowed no let up Thursday to protests paralysing major Pakistani cities a day after Prime Minister Imran Khan vowed to confront them.

Demonstrations broke out after the Supreme Court on Wednesday overturned a blasphemy conviction for Christian mother Asia Bibi, ending her eight year ordeal on death row but infuriating Muslim conservatives.

One key protest leader has called for the assassination of the country’s top judges and for mutiny against the army’s top brass since the court's decision reignited the touchpaper issue.&nbsp;

Another leader on Thursday pledged to continue holding sit-ins in cities across the country with supporters blocking major traffic thoroughfares, causing gridlock and school closures in key hubs like Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Karachi.

"The sit-ins will continue whatever the circumstances are," Khadim Hussain Rizvi, leader of the Tehreek-e-Labaik Pakistan (TLP) party, tweeted from his verified account.

Blasphemy is a massively inflammatory charge in Muslim-majority Pakistan, where even unproven allegations of insulting Islam and its Prophet Mohammed can provoke death at the hands of vigilantes.

The defiance from the protest leaders came after Khan issued a forceful rebuke in a nationally televised address, saying the government would not tolerate violent protests or groups openly threatening public officials.

"We will protect people's properties and lives, we will not allow any sabotage," said Khan Wednesday evening.

There was no indication Thursday that authorities were preparing to clear the small pockets of protesters blocking highways.&nbsp;

Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry said officials had entered talks with the protesters ahead of mass demonstrations scheduled for Friday, the holiest day of the Islamic week and a time when the size of demonstrations can often swell.

"Negotiations are ongoing in Lahore and Rawalpindi and I will be able to say something about them later," Chaudhry told a press briefing, but warned that violence would not be ignored.

"All those found involved in defying the writ of the state will have to pay the price."

Unequivocal

Khan's speech drew praise across much of social media, including from those formerly critical of the prime minister.&nbsp;

Prominent writer Mosharraf Zaidi hailed a "remarkable speech" and a column in the English daily Dawn said Khan had taken "an unequivocal and strong line against religious bigotry and hatred that we have not seen taken in almost two decades".

"Prime Minister Imran Khan was admirably forthright in condemning those who believe violence is the appropriate response to a judicial verdict with which they disagree," said the English-language The News, which is often a critic of the PM.

Others highlighted the prime minister's mixed record on addressing the controversy around blasphemy.&nbsp;

"Wish Imran Khan had delivered similar speech in the last Faizabad dharna," tweeted Balal Haider, referring to Khan's silence during similar anti-blasphemy protests last year.&nbsp;

The demonstrations are being largely led by the TLP, which is known for its hardline stance on blasphemy issues.

TLP, founded in 2015, blockaded the capital Islamabad for several weeks last year calling for stricter enforcement of Pakistan's controversial blasphemy laws.

That protest forced the resignation of the federal law minister and paved the way for the group to poll more than 2.23 million votes in the July 25 general election, in what analysts called a "surprisingly" rapid rise.

The TLP supremo Rizvi has also vowed to "wipe Holland off the face of the earth" over cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed if TLP were able to secure power of the nuclear-armed country.

The protests come as Khan prepares to depart for a four-day trip to China, where he will likely seek financial assistance from Beijing to shore up the country’s deteriorating finances.

Pakistan hardliners vow no let up in paralysing blasphemy protests

Imran Khan will arrive in China on Friday in what is termed as the most significant visit to China by a Pakistani Prime Minister in recent years as the all-weather allies grapple to iron out differences over the CPEC and Islamabad approaching 'friendly nations' to avoid a tough IMF bailout package.

During his four-day visit, Khan is scheduled to hold talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang and expected to sign several agreements.&nbsp;

Khan is also one of the heads of countries who would attend the inaugural meeting of China's biggest international import expo to be held in Shanghai from November 5.

While it is a routine for a new Pakistan Prime Minister to visit China considering the "iron brother"&nbsp;relationship between two countries and militaries, Khan's visit evoked considerable interest as it comes in the wake of his past criticism of the $ 60 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects and remarks by his ministers to downsize some of the projects over debt concern.

The cricketer-turned-politician, during his first visit to China, is also expected to seek more Chinese loans to avoid approaching IMF for a bailout package.&nbsp;

Soon after the government headed by Khan was formed, Pakistan's Commerce and Industry Minister Abdul Razak Dawood told the Financial Times that the new government would review all the CPEC projects. He also reportedly said that some of the agreements were unfair to Pakistani companies and should be put on hold for a year.

Few days later, Railway Minister Sheikh Rashid let off another bombshell by saying that Pakistan wants to cut the size of the $ 8 billion Karachi-Peshawar rail line, the biggest project of the CPEC, by $ 2 billion.

The statements evoked serious concerns in China as the CPEC is the flagship project of Xi's pet multi-billion Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
The CPEC has also become a major irritant in India-China relations with New Delhi voicing its opposition to the infrastructure project as it traverses through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK).

Khan, however, assured his support to the CPEC when Chinese State Councillor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi visited Islamabad on September.&nbsp;
China also agreed to address his concerns that the CPEC projects were mainly benefitting the dominant Punjab region and the new projects will focus on the western region of Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.&nbsp;

From Beijing's point of view, Pakistan's criticism of the project was a shocker, specially after China's takeover of Sri Lanka's Hambantota port on 99-year lease as debt swap.

A recent write up in the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post said, According to the few financial details of the CPEC that are available, Pakistan is not benefiting significantly from the programme...Although China has lent Pakistan $ 26 billion-$ 30 billion for power and transport projects that are part of the economic corridor, not a single dollar has entered the Pakistani banking channels.

"Instead, Chinese banks give the loans to Chinese companies, which buy equipment in China and use it in Pakistan. Consequently, instead of gaining economic benefits, Pakistan is running up huge debts and risking fiscal default,"&nbsp;it said.

Also, China is concerned over cash-strapped Pakistan's plans to approach the International Monetary Fund for a bailout amid assertions by the global lender to scrutinise the CPEC loans.

IMF chief Christiana Lagarde has made it clear that the IMF would require absolute transparency on Pakistan's debts, including those with the CPEC.&nbsp;

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has also warned that any potential IMF bailout for Pakistan should not provide funds to pay off Chinese lenders.
Beijing is also uncomfortable over Pakistan roping in Saudi Arabia to invest in Balochistan bordering Iran. The province is key to the CPEC as it terminates at the strategic Gwadar port located there. The CPEC connects China's Xinjiang province with Gwadar through a rail, road and pipeline network. China do not want the CPEC projects to get caught in the Saudi-Iran rivalry.

For its part, China has been giving a top billing for Khan's visit and vehemently deny the debt concerns.

Khan's visit to China will provide an "opportunity" for the two countries to open a "new chapter" of bilateral relations "under the new circumstances", Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said on Monday.

Lu also refuted criticism that the CPEC is causing financial and debt problems for Pakistan, saying Islamabad has already made it clear that debts incurred by the CPEC only account for a very small portion of Pakistan's total debts and is not a reason why the country is experiencing financial difficulties.&nbsp;

Khan's visit to China comes at a time when radical Islamists, defying the prime minister's stern warning, are holding protests across Pakistan against the acquittal of a Christian woman sentenced to death for committing blasphemy.&nbsp;

Asia Bibi, 47, was convicted in 2010 after being accused of insulting Islam in a row with her neighbours. She always maintained her innocence, but has spent most of the past eight years in solitary confinement.

Revolt against chief justice, army chief unacceptable, says PM Imran Khan

Pakistan's Imran Khan won praise for his stance against religious hardliners Thursday, as demonstrators blocked major roads to protest the Supreme Court's overturning of a blasphemy conviction.

Khan has vowed to confront extremists who called for the assassination of the country’s Supreme Court justices, and for mutiny against the army’s top brass, after the acquittal of <a href="http://www.wionews.com/south-asia/how-asia-bibi-was-convicted-in-blasphemey-case-a-timeline-174662">Asia Bibi</a>, a Christian woman on death row for blasphemy.

Blasphemy is a massively inflammatory charge in Muslim-majority Pakistan, where even unproven allegations of insulting Islam and its Prophet Mohammed can provoke death at the hands of vigilantes. Khan's speech drew praise across social media, including from those formerly critical of the prime minister. Prominent journalist Mosharraf Zaidi hailed a "remarkable speech" and a column in the English daily Dawn said Khan had taken "an unequivocal and strong line against religious bigotry and hatred that we have not seen taken in almost two decades". "Prime Minister Imran Khan was admirably forthright in condemning those who believe violence is the appropriate response to a judicial verdict with which they disagree," said the English-language The News, which is often a critic of the PM. Others, however, highlighted the prime minister's mixed record on addressing the controversy around blasphemy issues in Pakistan. "Wish Imran khan had delivered similar speech in the last Faizabad dharna," tweeted Balal Haider, referring to Khan's silence during similar anti-blasphemy protests last year. There was no indication Thursday that the authorities were preparing to clear the small pockets of protesters that continue to block major thoroughfares in the cities of Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi. The demonstrations are being largely led by the Tehreek-e-Labaik Pakistan (TLP) party, which is known for its hardline stance on blasphemy issues. The party's chief Khadim Hussain Rizvi has also vowed to "wipe Holland off the face of the earth" over cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed if TLP were able to secure power of the nuclear-armed country. The protests come as Khan prepares to depart for a four-day trip to China, where he will likely seek financial assistance from Beijing to shore up the country’s deteriorating finances.

Pakistan PM praised for stand against hardliners, as blasphemy protests continue for second day

Ahead of Prime Minister Imran Khan's first visit to China, Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Wednesday said the relations between the two nations is a "model of state-to-state ties" and the CPEC projects have given an important socio-economic development dimension to their friendship.&nbsp;

Khan, accompanied by Qureshi, will lead a delegation from November 2-5 to China for talks with President Xi Jinping amid anxieties in Beijing over his government's approach to deal with the $ 60 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) following reports about Islamabad downsizing certain projects.&nbsp;

Khan's trip to Beijing comes ahead of a visit to Islamabad by International Monetary Fund officials on November 7 for formal discussions on a bailout package for the cash-strapped country.

Qureshi chaired a preparatory meeting for Khan's visit via video conference with the Ambassador of Pakistan in Beijing, Masood Khalid.&nbsp;

"The two countries are close friends, good neighbours and development partners. The bilateral relationship has withstood the test of times. Regardless of domestic or international changes, this close friendship has served as a model of state-to-state relations for other countries," he said.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

Highlighting that Pakistan and China are "all-weather strategic cooperative partners", the foreign minister said the bilateral ties have been further strengthened, particularly in the economic field, by the launch of the CPEC.&nbsp;

Underscoring that the ambitious infrastructure project has added another important socio-economic development dimension to the bilateral relationship, Qureshi said, "The leadership of both countries has expressed strong desire and commitment to the successful implementation of the CPEC."

Beijing touts CPEC as the flagship infrastructure programme in its vast Belt and Road (BRI) Initiative. The CPEC connects China's Xinjiang province with Gwadar, a port city in Balochistan, through a rail, road and pipeline network.

India is opposed to the CPEC as it traverses through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.&nbsp;

Qureshi said, "Pakistan considers the CPEC as an engine for growth; a catalyst for economic development, and a platform for socio-economic uplift of the people of Pakistan."

The IMF had said it would closely scrutinise the CPEC projects and the US is opposed to the use of IMF money to service the Chinese loans.

An assessment by the State Bank of Pakistan and the Finance Ministry showed that Pakistan needed $ 11.7 billion to service its external debt in the current fiscal year 2018-19.

The US has said the debts accrued on the CPEC projects were to blame for Pakistan's current economic crisis, a statement which was rejected by both Beijing and Islamabad.

On Monday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang had told the media in Beijing that Khan's first visit will provide an opportunity for two countries to "open a new chapter of development of bilateral relations under the new circumstances".&nbsp;
