The country’s&nbsp;currency, the Pakistani rupee, fell to a new low when the military intervened to put an end to violent protests sparked by the arrest of Khan on Tuesday (May 9).

According to Arif Habib Ltd's foreign-exchange desk, the rupee fell 3.3 per cent to an all-time low of $300 per dollar on Thursday (May 11).

However, the political crisis that is consuming Pakistan is undermining expectations that the South Asian country would soon be able to resume its much-needed International Monetary Fund (IMF) loan programme and avoid a full-fledged financial crisis.

“Time is ticking away. It seems the IMF still has reservations that Pakistan has not met all the conditions to reach an agreement for it to release the $1.2 billion loan tranche under an already agreed loan facility,” Prof Ajay Darshan Behera,&nbsp;Academy of International Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, told WION.&nbsp;

“Pakistan needs $4 billion by this June to meet its debt obligations. In addition, it needs another $11 billion for debt repayments by December 2023. Without the $1.2 billion coming through from the IMF soon, other countries are also not going to release committed loans to Pakistan. In this scenario, Pakistan is likely to default on its loans,” added Prof. Behera.&nbsp;

Pakistan is expected to repay $73 billion by 2025, but this will be difficult without debt restructuring.

“Pakistan’s economy desperately requires external support to avoid the default and also stabilise. The IMF loan, even if it comes through, cannot resolve the economic crisis for the country. It will only give it a breather,” Dr Shalini Chawla, Distinguished Fellow at the Centre for Air Power Studies, New Delhi, told WION.&nbsp;

“The IMF loan will open other channels of funding for Pakistan. So the country needs to convince the IMF. Additionally, what can actually alter the economic dynamics of Pakistan is a debt waiver. Pakistan should seek a debt waiver from China given the fact that it owes a significant percentage of debt to China and Beijing is its strongest ally,” added Dr Chawla.

The Pakistan&nbsp;Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)&nbsp;chief was arrested on Tuesday (May 9) during an appearance at the Islamabad High Court in connection with several lawsuits brought against him. Khan also assured that if he gets re-elected as the Pakistan PM, he will "not denotify" the army chief.

"Army chief is insecure as I removed him as ISPR chief. I will not denotify him when I come to power," Khan said.

The PTI chief claimed that he was worried that "they will pick me&nbsp;up&nbsp;again."

On Friday, the Islamabad High Court granted the PTI chairman bail for two weeks in the Al-Qadir Trust case and all others.

Thanking the court for its decision, he said that the nation's judicial system is the "only thing which is stopping Pakistan from becoming a complete banana Republic where the law of the jungle prevails."

"The only hope we have is the judiciary, which again protected me," he said, adding that he's still not sure that when he steps out of the High Court "they" won't arrest him yet again.

Addressing Pakistan's federal cabinet, Sharif referred to the arrests of PML-N [Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz)] supremo Nawaz Sharif and other members of the federal coalition and asked why such&nbsp;leniency was not given to them.&nbsp;

"Let this be free for all," he said, adding that everyone will bear the consequences of whatever followed next.

Talking about the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party workers' protests, he said they have disrespected the martyrs of Pakistan in a way that has never been done by "our enemies".

Lamenting the protests after Imran Khan's May 9 arrest, he said such scenes have not been witnessed in Pakistan since the fall of Dhaka in 1973.

"The attacks on army installations, there can be no greater terrorism in the country," he said. "And seeing all this, a country, I don’t want to take its name, was celebrating that what couldn’t happen in 75 years is now happening in Pakistan."

He said that even after the death of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, the nation had erupted into protests but no one "moved towards military installations".

On being asked whether or not the arrest can be considered purely legal, Jan said: "Absolutely not". He said, "They can give the face of having a legal background to it, but it's all politically motivated, we all know that."&nbsp;

"The problem is actually the Pakistan Army can not handle, can not accept a situation when there is a popular leader, who goes about his own ways of dealing with nations problems, who goes about deciding for the people of Pakistan."&nbsp;

But the Islamabad High Court upheld the arrest, noting that all legal formalities were fulfilled by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).&nbsp;

PTI is expected to challenge in the Supreme Court the Islamabad High Court ruling.&nbsp;

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken told a joint news conference in Washington: "We just want to make sure that whatever happens in Pakistan is consistent with the rule of law, with the constitution."&nbsp;

While speaking alongside Blinken, UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly noted that Britain enjoyed "a longstanding and close relationship" with Commonwealth member Pakistan. He said, "We want to see peaceful democracy in that country. We want to see the rule of law adhered to."&nbsp;

Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah told reporters that Khan’s arrest came after he ignored notices to turn himself in, in connection with a case pursued by the anti-corruption body.&nbsp;

“Imran Khan did not appear despite the notices, NAB has arrested him for damaging the national treasury. No violence was done to them,” said the interior minister, on Twitter. However, PTI leaders have denied the claims and said that the former PM had not been issued any arrest warrant before Tuesday.

The violence that followed

In the videos of his arrest, Khan can be seen being whisked away into a police van while being surrounded by several policemen. This also prompted a fight between Imran Khan’s supporters and the police. The Islamabad Police said that Section 144 had been imposed in the city amidst the outcry.&nbsp;

The clashes have left at least one protester dead. Some protesters also stormed the residence of the corps commander in Lahore and laid siege to a gate of the army’s general headquarters in the city of Rawalpindi.&nbsp;

As the protests grew in several cities across Pakistan, police fired tear gas and water cannons to disperse Khan supporters in Karachi and Lahore. According to media reports, demonstrators blocked roads in the capital Islamabad, Peshawar, and other cities. Khan’s supporters allegedly also set ablaze the building of Radio Pakistan in Peshawar.&nbsp;

Internet shutdown

Pakistani officials have imposed an emergency order banning all gatherings in three of the country’s four provinces. Additionally, the country’s telecommunications watchdog told Reuters that mobile data services were being suspended after an order from the interior ministry.&nbsp;

Additionally, Internet’s Observatory, NetBlocks, late Tuesday, said “social media restrictions, real-time network data show that total internet shutdowns are now in effect in some regions of Pakistan.”&nbsp;

Social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook and YouTube are now restricted across Pakistan which is “likely to limit freedom of assembly and the public’s ability to seek information,” said NetBlocks in a subsequent update.&nbsp;

Al-Qadir trust case

The former international cricketer turned politician is currently facing multiple lawsuits and is accused of a number of violations across Pakistan, including corruption while serving as the country’s prime minister. Tuesday’s arrest was made in connection with Khan’s involvement in the Al-Qadir Trust case.&nbsp;

Imran Khan, his wife Bushra Bibi, and other PTI party leaders allegedly committed wrongdoing while founding Al-Qadir University and the trust formed to back the university. The allegations suggest that an agreement between his government and a real estate magnate cost Pakistan’s struggling economy $50 billion.&nbsp;

PTI’s next move

Speaking about the party’s course of action, PTI official Asad Umar told Al Jazeera, that its legal team will file an appeal in the country’s Supreme Court to challenge the decision by Islamabad High Court which has called Khan’s arrest legal.&nbsp;

Former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan, in a dramatic turn of events on Tuesday, was arrested outside Islamabad High Court in connection with a Rs 50 billion ($611 million) corruption scandal dubbed as Al-Qadir Trust case.&nbsp;

Khan is only the latest among a number of former Pakistani prime ministers who have circumvented the cycle between Islamabad's Prime Minister's Office to an 'undisclosed location' after arrest, throwing the spotlight on the supposed role of the country's deep state into running Pakistan's corridors of power.&nbsp;

On Saturday, May 6, Imran Khan at a political gathering in Lahore, said that an officer in Pakistan Inter-Services and Intelligence (ISI) was involved in an assassination attempt on him last November.&nbsp;

Violent demonstrations were staged as the authorities were left with burnt buildings and debris, including charred vehicles which are blocking the road and disrupting traffic.&nbsp;

The protesters, who barged into the house of commanders, were heard saying in one of the viral videos "Kaha tha Imran Khan ko na chedna (Had warned, don't harass Imran Khan)". They were also seen heckling the security personnel outside the house of corps commanders.&nbsp;

In one of the videos, people were seen coming out of the houses after stealing food items like mutton korma, ketchup, salad,&nbsp;etc. Another video showed a person with a peacock, with the caption claiming that the bird was also stolen.&nbsp;

The violence has also disrupted the daily lives of commoners as a Karachi resident Raja Imran, quoted by the news agency Reuters, said, "There is total chaos across the country. There are exams going on, and school children will suffer. There is no public transport service across the city. Everyone is facing great difficulties."&nbsp;

Local media outlets reported that one PTI worker was killed and six others were injured in a firing incident at a protest rally in Quetta. Supporters had blocked the main Quetta Airport Road to protest against the arrest.&nbsp;

Authorities have also suspended mobile data services across the country, meanwhile, Twitter, YouTube and Facebook were disrupted. Media outlets carried watered-down coverage of violence.&nbsp;

Police said Wednesday that nearly 1,000 people have been arrested in Pakistan's Punjab, the country's most populous province, since protests erupted. "Police teams arrested 945 law breakers and miscreants from across the province," officials said in a statement to media. They added that 130 officers and officials were injured in the violence.&nbsp;

Imran Khan was arrested on Tuesday inside Islamabad High Court's premises in the Al-Qadir Trust graft case.

The accountability court's hearing took&nbsp;place at the police compound where he is being held following his arrest, authorities said.
